Some interesting non-human and quasi-human "folks" in this setting include:
A rogue AI hivemind that assembled itself from surviving hacked warships and drones near the end of the last AI-using war and scampered off to various dark corners of various solar systems. They engage in piracy to acquire fuel, ammunition, materials, new ships, new drones and other inexplicable stuff. For some reason, it/they seem of late to be stealing classical art and human hostages.
A while back, many dolphins were uplifted and put into specially designed scout ships, then sent off out into the depths of space. Some have started returning with really weird findings.
Several brigades worth of genetically engineered super soldiers exist, but many of them went rogue and took over the normal-human-run ships they were stationed on, skedaddling like the rogue AI hivemind. They are pirates and mercenaries for the most part now, although one charismatic leader has emerged to create an ubermench empire.
And, of course, the scary ass grey "aliens" with their inscrutable agendas who hide in the shadows and try to make themselves as apparently non-existant as possible.
