It's Lord Quest time again, so lets get this show on the road.

    For the freshers:

    And the prior thread:
In which we acted like suave mother-fuckers, charming ladies and securing permission to court them. Oh, and wanted to get Harry to watch James, all subtle like.

You wake to the dawn bells, ringing their pealing greetings to the day ahead. Getting up you put on your travelling garb, and head to the kitchens to grab a bite to eat before you start the day. The first and least formal day of the Merchant's Festival will be starting, with the first merchants setting up their spots getting in early to secure prime selling positions.

Once the formal breakfast in half a bells time is served, it will be hard to find anyone, as you will be at the lords table, and only Doobs will be able to dine with you there. The other men will eat at the Guards Table, or in the case of Harry, most likely avoid the tables entirely and grab a meal direct from the chef.

You wanted to find Harry, to ask him to keep an eye on James, do you follow though with this? Also, is there anyone you wish to see before heading off today?
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)04:35 No.9415519
Holly balls, two Lord Quests in two days? It's like a miracle wrapped in beacon and awesome.

Go tell our men at the guard's table to keep an eye out for Harry and tell him to find us. Head to chef and ask him to do the same.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)04:38 No.9415549
Three so far, and the last one almost hit five hundred posts.

    Also, fuck yes.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 04/25/10(Sun)04:40 No.9415571
You make sure to tell your men and the chef to tell Harry that you're looking for him. Is there anyone else you wanted to talk to for today?

Did you want to make sure anyone was with you today? They'll be able to find you if they need to, but they'll be out and about after breakfast until leaving. You remember hearing that Cohen wanted to leave first thing after the morning meal, to see what the merchants had before they sold anything.

    >You wanted to find Harry, to ask him to keep an eye on James, do you follow though with this?

No, let it be. The last thing we want is for James to actively sabotage us as reprisal. It probably wouldn't be the first that a suitor tries to spy on him.

You manage to find a spice shop. Saffaron isn't among the ingredients available. Nor are any seeds. You can buy some other herbs though.

For 5s a unit: Rosmary, Thyme, Coriander, leeks, Mint
For 7s/u: Eschallots, lemon grass, ground black peppers
for 1g/u: yellow bell peppers, cinnamon, red and green peppers

A unit varies depending on the herb. However it is enough to cook with for some time if one is cooking for oneself, or a small group. Exact time lasted would depend on how much spice they used, how often, etc. But expect one unit to keep a small group of 5 people in spice for about a month, if it were the only spice used, used normally most evenings. In reality poorer families would only use herbs on special events, and richer ones would have many herbs to chose from, so that it would take much longer to go through a given unit.

Forgot to ask if you wanted to haggle.

    >NEW! Haggle Rules

Roll using haggle skill or ½ charisma. You can use related skills at a -1 penalty for closely related, or -2 for distantly related.

If your using a value of 8, you roll a d8. You cut 10% of for every number you beat their relevant skill by. Rolling under half of their skill may get them to convince you to buy more, or charge you more, or with a critical failure insult them.

Your value would be a 9 (7 char, +3 for skill (lordly duties) -1 for skill closely related). Expect average people to have haggle values of 1-3, merchants from 4-10 depending on how well off they are, etc. A poor merchant is likely a worse haggler then a well off one.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)05:43 No.9416326

    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)05:44 No.9416353
    rolled 7 = 7

Slightly complicated, but I think I've got it. The goal is to roll over their haggle ability with ours or using our charisma.

    Rolling for a haggling.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 04/25/10(Sun)05:46 No.9416375
So if you wanted to haggle, you'd roll a d9. You get 10% off the final price, for every point you beat their haggle value by. Haggle value is Charisma + Haggle, or 1/2 charisma if you have no related skills. Related skills can be used at a penalty depending on how related they are and the situation (intimidate might be used at a -1 in a less formal situation, but in a city with guards nearby it would have a -3 penalty. )

I can assume you are the Thommis Green, dragonslayer and Lord of Teajy? Would I be paid to live on, and be paid by the job, able to take outside work? Or would I be full time arming and armouring your men? As you can see here, most of my wares aren't weaponry, but you'll find me proficient enough.

What say you to hiring Me for three gold a month, which I will split between my apprentices and myself, food and board in addition to this, and you shall build me a smithy. I will bring my tools, and furnish it from my own home so there is no need for that. But I want a solid building, I will help in construction, you may use nails, I will supply. Is this deal acceptable? Would leaving at the end of the Festival be acceptable? For this I would work for you for free, given that you supply materials.

Is the leather and the wood raw or worked? I am no tanner, nor am I a carver nor carpenter. To create tools I will need a carpenter to work with, or at the least someone to make handles for my tool-heads. Tools entirely of steel are both heavy, poor quality, and expensive.

Indeed. All the money you get from selling surpluses? That's him and Smyatt at work.

I know no-one who would have arrived yet. I am somewhat unpopular, thanks to my heritage *gestures towards his ears*. I am not a travelling smith, I am in fact based in this town here, but I am happy to be leaving, the local atmosphere is not particularly conducive to the elder folk.

We have to build it in such a way that later we can attach a water mill to it, also next to future Inn/tavern

I'm offering you the best deal I can afford on this one. It's a piece I make as a luxury, normally I charge 20g for one of these things. Continual effects require a lot of ruining, as to when the effect should take place. However this one is a masterpiece, best work you'll find outside of dwarf lands. Only reason I'm selling you one this cheap is that if you buy it, it'll become something valuable as far as the lower classes are concerned, and it'll mean that word of my place will spread too, as more then just a trinket store.

It just adds one to your combat skill, not the rolls. Which will become important when we get to the group combat rules I've thrown together. Yeah, I'm making things more complicated then roll and pray, but don't worry, the basics should stay the same.

It is similar to the luck ring I sold you, however is thrice as potent. However it will not work in combat, whether against another person or a beast. That includes indirect combat, magical combat, etc. For you lord, 1g. They're hard to make, but well worth it for someone who faces mundane perils."

What would be even more fiddly is adjusting for climate. Oh, I thought we were going hunting, not shopping with Sarah.

We have a week here. Hunting is happening on another day.

Well then we get to work on our totally rad weather machine.

    Mad science, here we come!
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)08:27 No.9417948
    this is important

but our alchemy won't help in any significant way until we can find out if it will grow in the rather temperate zone we live in at all

    Where ARE we heading?
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)08:29 No.9417973
Chatter with Sarah and Doobs while we travel. Perhaps we can find more common interests we share.

Markets. I didn't expect you to run off with Cohen to do some early morning shopping, although I guess it frees you up to go where Sarah wants to shop.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)08:33 No.9418017
Let's ask her if she's looking for something special.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)08:34 No.9418025
I don't think James is up to anything dodgy. I just think he's holding his cards suspiciously close to his chest. Which suggests to me that he's the Sheff household's domestic spy/counter-intelligence agents.

I mean really, if there was any doubt about this guy would Sheff be letting him near his daughter? Especially as a chaperone? He's also chaperoned the other daughters.

I just figure it could be good for Harry to keep an eye on him just because maybe Harry will learn something from the experience or learn more about James in the process.

I don't actually think he's a danger though. Especially since QL used a picture of Percy for James. Actually, considering it's Percy maybe James really is just dense.

An assassin with a crossbow shoots at him point blank.

The bolt swerves off and flies back, hitting the assassin in the chest.

Thom Green stands over the body. "Pfft, amateur."

(Maybe that suspected love potion she appears to be working on. Innocently ask her: "What was that anyways?")
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)08:34 No.9418032
Well that's fine, I'll guess we'll grit our teeth and bear it. The runic tattoo thing Cohen brought up was pretty cool though. We'll keep that in mind.

    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)08:46 No.9418171
Shit. And the only tangible example of them working that we give her is the exact one we don't want to give. Namely the romance ring warming when we were about to make a tard of ourself at the first Seakay feast.
