So uh... I'm working on a homebrew space/future game and I'm coming up dry on bitchin' alien races. I'd rather not crib entirely from existing sci-fi, 'cuz if I wanted to that I'd just do it myself... so I figured I'd see if you guys had any ideas.

So far I have space vikings and mutants who can mutate themselves to replicate powers and features of other races. Forgive the short, casual descriptions I don't feel like putting forth the effort to tpye overly awesome right now.

Space Tyrannosaurs that founded an empire on being a bunch of communistic mercenaries, allowing an enormous cashflow into their system, giving everyone an extremely comfortable life.

So basically it's a Star Trek soviet union, with crazyass dinosaur Swiss fighting wars and protecting trader fleets all across the galaxy.

I like it. Think I can work with that one way or another.

Lessee what others come up with, too, shall we?

Whales that went BACK on land, they export high-tech equipment for extremely hazardous environments.

They're also forerunners on defensive military applications, and the Commie Dino empire and the Space Whale empire are very closely allied.

    Space whales. I like it.
Anyone with any ideas that COULDN'T be construed as a furry? Wouldn't mind something winged. The wife loves wings.

A race of crystiline based creatures that have a disturbing similarity to Modern Christian Angels. Including an inner light, extreme beauty and Wings. The wings do not allow actual flight, it is actually a form of Telekinisis.

They are magnificent bastards that thrive on convoluted plans and require worship and reverance from other races to provide the energy for reproduction.

Now that is also frickin' awesome. I am currently satisfied, but by all means continue to post shit. It's not as though there's a whole lot else going on today.

Race of pyschics who have a home planet, but no spacefaring technology.

When they are found around the galaxy, it turns out they assemble teams of very powerful psykers to replicate the effects of spacefaring technology.

So.... the PC ship comes across a meteor travelling through space.... except for the fact that it isn't flaming-freezing, rotating, nor blazing through the skies. And it just changed direction. It's now coming towards the Ship.

Once in visual range, the players can clearly see a group of maybe 50 men and women, just... standing on the surface of the rock, locked in deep concentration. The captain then hears a garbled subspace transmission.... INSIDE HIS HEAD.

Because they are psychic, they have scanned the Ship and identified the captain. "Caption Talon Karrde, this is caption Roan Fel. Identify yourself and your purpose." The captain slowly starts thinking he is insane since no one else hears it (Or hell, have a psychic dedicated to maintaining a stealth cloaking field that they can selectively allow to be pierced!), for misunderstandings up the wazoo.

What I Am saying is, there are ten dudes standing in a circle, concentrating on lifting the massive single piece of stone they are standing on from teh planets surface, through the atmosphere. There are 20 dudes focusing on maintaining breatheable atmosphere on the rock. 4 or 5 people scanning for transmissions, 15 guys dedicated to ionizing ambient plasma and hurling it at enemy "ships"....

Another ally for the Commie Dinos.

    A race of water bears.

    >Tardigrades are polyextremophiles and are able to survive in extreme environments that would kill almost any other animal. Some can survive temperatures of -273°C, close to absolute zero, temperatures as high as 151 °C (303 °F), 1,000 times more radiation than other animals such as humans, almost a century without water, and even the vacuum of space. In September 2007, tardigrades were taken into low Earth orbit on the FOTON-M3 mission and for 10 days were exposed to the vacuum of space. After they were returned to Earth, it was discovered that many of them survived and laid eggs that hatched normally, making these the only animals shown to be able to survive the vacuum of space.

The Commie Dinos were hired by -next post- to assist in a gruesome civil war between the Space Water Bears.
When they arrived at the scene they were faced with the result of a full-out nuclear war between a democratic union and an fascist empire, on a single planet numbering 7 billion intelligent lifeforms. The tough physique of the Water Bears prevented them from most of the harmful effects of the nuclear war, but the following famine and disease had killed most of the population.
What was supposed to be a "disarmament" mission became a humanitarian mission, ending in an exodus.
The Water Bear planet was unable to survive complex life anymore, so the Commie Dinos granted the surviving Water Bears refuge on some of their planets.

Years later, it's not uncommon to spot the hulking form of a Water Bear between a group of merc Dinos.

My favorite idea for a race was one which was universally determined to avoid spaceflight at nearly all costs. The poor sods were also the most intelligent race in the galaxy, and so end up designing most of the ships/equipment.
Of course, it's never quite right, because they've never BEEN in space, so the doorways are usually too small, or the shields sometimes activate during docking and push the ship away from the docking port, requiring an ass-long time to figure out the overcomplicated deactivation mechanisms... you get the idea.

Some sort of sentient hovering crystal swarm that communicates by polarizing itself and emitting high intensity UV light. Its respiration cycle would involve converting oxygen and water vapor to hydrogen cyanide or something equally as abhorrent or deadly.

Here's one I cooked up for a similar /tg/ request a while ago:

The Akkara are a hawk-like race of humanoids. A male individual is born in one lonely egg in an incubator, alone, and raised by a droid; when it comes of age, it's taught about the incredibly advanced ship around it, which is the size of a small freighter and incredibly agile.

They spend the entirety of their lives doing mercenary or transport work, anywhere that their whims take them; with the money they make they add on to their ship. Powerful weapons, shields, exotics like stealth technology and miniaturizers. The Akkara take immense pride in their ships, to the point that insulting one's vessel is a curse of the highest order. When two male Akkara encounter one another they have a non-lethal dogfight, with the winner taking the system of his choice from the loser's ship.

Eventually, when an Akkaran ship has reached a certain age, what few original systems remain broadcast out into the void, sending a highly encrypted signal which is often a mystery even to the ship's owner. After five or six years, the male receives a guest: A female. If and only if his ship is to an acceptable standard will she mate, and after she does she immediately departs on a "blank" Akkaran ship, remarkably similar to the one the male was born in.
    >> Anonymous 12/31/09(Thu)17:12 No.7365975

An aged Akkaran near death typically sets his ship towards the outside of the galaxy on autopilot and disengages the life support, letting his metal tomb serve as a monument to his life as it journeys well beyond the hands of any who would defile it. Very rarely another party may come across one of these derelicts, and they are highly prized among pirates and researchers alike. Any Akkaran who sees a non-Akkaran piloting one of his species' ships typically attempts to reclaim the vessel at all costs.

Overall, they are an infrequently encountered race, but much sought-after in mercenary circles for their piloting skills, and it is almost unheard of for an Akkaran to do anything that doesn't involve his customized craft in some way. Where the females come from is unknown, and in fact none have ever been encountered by a non-Akkaran- Some have speculated they are only a myth perpetrated by the prideful males, unwilling to admit they in fact lay the eggs themselves.

A race of interstellar sea urchins that travel through deep space by stretching very fine membranes from each of their spines. They're capable of long term hibernation to conserve the energy they absorb when passing close to suns or from dissolving the occasional asteroid.
    >> Anonymous 12/31/09(Thu)17:18 No.7366069
Assuming they just surf the interstellar wind yea? Neat.
    >> Anonymous 12/31/09(Thu)17:22 No.7366120
I was gonna have them be squid-things, but c'mon, a squid? That's silly, squids can't fly. It's completely unbelievable.

They'd probably either be nigh-immortal or only die once their rate of absorption slows down due to entropy, leading to a long slow heat-death in the vacuum of space.

The guys I talked about in WATER BEARS...

    Based these guys on Opabinia's.

Strange intelligent invertebrates, these lifeforms are amphibious. Blessed with excellent eyesight and a dangerous claw, they never saw much in the use of long-distance weapons, althrough they often made use of artillery in their genocidal wars against other ethnic groups.

That was their death warrant when they became enslaved by a race with a superior military force. Their ritualistic way of war was annihilated and they became slaves, creating curious machines and fueling obscure research.
Through trading with trading empires, they learned about other races in space and freedom. However, six revolts, 12 million deaths and 50 years later, they were still subdued. That changed, as the reason for their enslavement became clear.

Their oppressors had fought against a rebel political faction, and crushed them. However, the rebels launched two deadly viruses before they were ultimately destroyed.
The first one killed off everyone in the 4th larval state, and the procreative state.
The second virus would cause a deadly cancer to grow during the 4th larval state, basically giving everyone a "death timer" and no ways of reproducing.
This race had no genetic research, and had to "buy" it from other races.
Basically teenagers, looking for a way out they conquered the Opabinia's to advance the research by selling the natural resources of the Opabinia planet.
However, their genetic makeup was difficult to work with, and the rebel faction had made sure that those who could work with their DNA were paid enough not to do it.

So one day, the Opabinia's woke up, to find out that their oppressors were no longer able to maintain their hold. A bloody revolt broke out.

The Opabinia's now free, set up a big trading empire, with peacekeeping aspirations.

UN and the World Bank as 5-eyed creatures with crab noses.

You could acquire their husks periodically and use them to craft stuff. Hell, if they're large enough you could strap some engines and sensors up on em. Have yourself a solid hull.

    Time to connect the dots.

The Commie Dino's have an assimilated minority of Space Water Bears.
Both are allied to the Space Whales, who often hire them for planetary warfare.
The Space Whales hire Akkara for protection in deep space.

The Crystal Angels are despised and sometimes even attacked, as many advanced races feel disgust towards the preying attitude of the Crystal Angels towards less advanced races. Nevertheless, their exceptionally large empire allows them to survive.

The race of psychics does nor particularly care for political power, and often export curious object to various trading empires. They have seen few conflicts, and in most conflicts rely on mercs to do the fighting.
They have an political and economical alliance with the Idiots Savant, showing them grand psychic images of the stars and nebula they will never see.

The Opabinia empire tries to stay as neutral as possible to help as much "less advanced" races as possible. They hate the Crystal Angels with a burning fury, and radical groups often plan terrorist attacks on Crystal Angels.

The Space Urchins are an incredibly old race, and after the Death of Billions At Once most races consider hostile actions against them to be genocidal suicide. That event was preceded by a government-funded buccaneer fleet that wounded a Space Urchin after which the wounded Space urchin killed every lifeform of that genus at once in a still-not-understood attack.
Still, exceptional people seek out Space Urchins for guidance when they are faced with difficult choices. Amused by this, most Space Urchins enjoy answering questions to "these funny tiny short-lived creatures that fly in tiny metal cans".
    >> Anonymous 12/31/09(Thu)17:53 No.7366502
    Shit. I forgot about them.

    A race of intelligent "treemen".

Except they don't look like oaks or something. They look like Drosera.

4 meter high man-eating intelligent treemen.

They excel in making starships for some curious reason, but their society is not very transparent. They spend a lot of money importing all kinds of rare meat, but have a strict philosopical aversion for eating the flesh of intelligent creatures.

A Race based on liquid helium instead of carbon that evolved on a planet orbiting a supernova remnant. Their Bodies are based on amoeboid shapes and have the ability to crystallize parts of the their structure to move and manipulate their environment. Vacuum doesn’t bother them, given the lack of any atmosphere on their homeworld, and hard radiation is a vital part of their diet that they photosynthesize like a plant absorbing sunlight. As they need no atmosphere to survive, they only race who have no problem with ‘open top’ starships.

Not really races, but something else.

A curious assembly of stars in a nebula.

Speculation of scientists has revealed that it's most likely some kind of device... constructed out of stars.

It's use and creators is lost in time. Not even the Space Sea Urchins know anything about this star-machine.

Mayhaps, the diplomacy would be epic. I'd imagine that whatever thoughts / desires / feelings sapient crystal structures might have would be utterly incomprehensible. I mean, how would they relate to something organic in nature? They might interpret all organic life on a planet as some kind of infection of the underlying rock and then go about converting it into the component parts / building blocks for more crystals.

    The Grays.

only they are a coal-powered, industrial age technology, which was in the grip of imperialism and colonistic expansion by sail... and it was a human ship which crash-landed on their world.
the net result of this is that the Greys have reverse-engineered the core technologies of basic space travel, and started retrofitting the systems into wooden hulled sailboats, and using leather and brass diving suits as spacesuits. they've now using manually sighted cannon to launch grappling harpoons into spacefaring vessels, and get a free tow through space, and winch themselves up, breach the hulls, and steal the ships...
ships they successfully steal are brought back to their nation states on the home planet, and are being used by their respective Gray Victoria or Napoleons to build fleets, with the goal of taking over their enemies, and then... the universe.

i have always liked the idea of a race that is somewhat like an ooze from D&D. they would have sentience and a limited capacity to expand and shrink but would essentially be able to take nearly any form. the only downside is most armor wouldnt work for them.
