    25 KB Lord Quest X - Also, merry Xmas /tg/. -Ening. Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/23/09(Wed)04:12 No.7253400
Sup, /tg/, I'm back. Been busy packing for a surprise camping trip I got happening after Xmas. So this'll be the last one until the new year. After that things should smooth up a bit, and I'll have more open (ie. otherwise boring) evenings for this.

    From last thread:
    >So, exactly what benefits come from raising our Alchemy score, anyway?
    >As in, do we learn alchemy recipes, or become more able to detect poison at certain Alchemy knowledge values, what?

You'll be able to learn some alchemy things once you pass the basics (at the moment you're on basic stuff. You need some alchemy supplies soon.) Also, any alchemy based tests will be easier (like impressing Sarah with alchemy).

    >Further, How does one learn about magic Alchemy? The more we can learn about alchemy in general, the better in my mind.
You will need a sorcerer of an alchemic bent. In fact, you might want to look into finding a real alchemist to learn off, you're not going to be able to learn off Erik forever.

We should probably look into more fundraising efforts, I suspect - peat's OK as a cash cow but if we're going to have to fortify and arm up, that's likely to cost serious moneys.

What are the current state of our Keep's defences? Poll Leold and DOOOOOBS, see how defensible they think things are.

Also, if Sylem's got enough of a hate-on to send bandits to burn down our villages, he's probably going to try again since his last effort was unsuccessful. Making sure the granary and other buildings important to the estate's operation are well-guarded should be a priority.

I think the best place for the tannery is in the north-west, near the swamps. That way the wind only blows the tannery smell over inhabited areas when it'd be blowing swamp-stink anyway.

Cattle shed... wherever's convenient for taking the grazing animals out to graze. Close enough to a village that it's easy to keep an eye on it.

I assume the map's not particularly to scale?
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)04:43 No.7253632
I thought we already decided that the tannery was to go up next to the swamp, so that any smell from the tannery would reach us only if swamp stink would anyways. As for the sheds, I vote in between the peasant's village and the keep, closer to the village.

Leold is back right? Did he purchase the services of any skilled workers with the money we gave him?
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/23/09(Wed)04:51 No.7253695
    Other news:

Peat went down a silver again. so it's 8s a unit.

Aegon and Baldric are spare, anything to get them to do?

Leold is back, and he's brought back a few hopeful tradesmen who want to sign up. A carpenter, a horticulturist, a miner, and a mage. The mage doesn't want to sign up long term, but is for 20g will check your land for any good ores, or for any other magical disturbances. He's a Mallemancer, so he specialises in metals, ores and such.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)04:52 No.7253711
Honestly, there's not too much going on. We are really waiting on our Uncle to get back with some skilled laborers hopefully, and Urist to return with some goods.

The only thing I really see that we could address ask Harry what the hell he's been up to these past two months. We spared his life, and even gave him a job. Has he just been sitting on his arse the past couple of months, or has he you know, actually done something?
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/23/09(Wed)04:54 No.7253720
Ok, done and done if there's no opposition

It is to the yay scale. Where 1cm on the map is about
    yay far on the ground.

    So no, not to scale.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)04:56 No.7253739

Fantastic. I imagine the mage is likely to be well worth the price - set him and the miner to survey the area, finding places that have useful ores that can most readily be extracted.

Also, if we're going to be mining and presumably refining ore, it might be best to start stockpiling peat or other fuel for use in smelting.

Can the carpenter help speed up construction time on buildings, or is he more into furniture carpentry?

We're running out of space at the keep, it has to be said - some kind of residence for the estate's skilled workers might be sensible.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)04:56 No.7253743

Sign on the carpenter and horticulturist, for their prices and a demonstration of their abilities first, of course. The mage is non-mining guild right? If I remember the mining guild wanted to send down one of their mages down to us for a 50/50 split of our ores.

Past 2 months? You caught him at the end of last month.

He's been integrating himself with the peasantry, he's a bit surprised at the size of the place, he was expecting you to have more people, cities and such. He's not much a country lad, but he likes the people. "They're honest like. All funny, won't stab you for a silver, and loyal like a mutt. They all say good stuff 'bout you, you'll be the most liked lord this side of the ocean, and possibly on the far side of it too."
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:13 No.7253900
Do we have any upcoming events where it'd be good to have Aegon impress the nobles with finely-crafted songs and tales? If not, he can work on his own compositions.

Or! Have him compose a catchy and comical ditty that's a thinly-veiled tale of Lord Sylem's villainous misdeeds, with special emphasis on how dangerous it is to have any kind of dealing with him, how he's treacherous, conniving, backstabbing, fickle, inconstant, capricious, and generally too crazy to trust at all.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:14 No.7253904
I recommend basic pallisades to be constructed around the main village proper, with well enough room to include future expansion, as well as several watch towers in key locations: specifically at least one at each main directional point, South to the river, West to the swamp, North to Thom's Mercy and East to the forest.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/23/09(Wed)05:15 No.7253918
    It'll help improve them.

Miner wants a silver a month, horticulturist wants a gold a month.

You have, and he's looking for animals, and grabbing the ring. He'll be back before the month is over.

    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:17 No.7253932
We should make them out of stone from our Quarry. This way we have a much stronger setup.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:19 No.7253946
Right, we can afford that. Have the carpenter work on building furniture for the keep's rooms. Start him at the worst rooms and move up to the better rooms. Get the horticulturist to begin work on cold resistant and longer lasting strains of our crops.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:20 No.7253949

I should've said - the point of this musical character-assassination is to undermine any kind of support or sympathy that Sylem might enjoy, and get merchants wary of trading with him. If Sylem's as crazy and draconian towards his own peasants as he is towards visitors there's likely a good bit of resentment festering in his lands, so this song could become an underground folk hit.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:20 No.7253955
    I am fine with this.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:21 No.7253964

Also, are we hiring the mage? I vote yes. But once again, with a haggle roll first from Smyatt.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:22 No.7253971
Let's use magic carrier pigeons to get him to bring back a varied collection of seeds as well. Herbs and vegetables and whatnot.

Let's hire the entire group, but haggle with the mage, and he must sign a contract declaring confidentiality.

I second the idea of our bard producing a song in opposition to Sylem. Hopefully we can spread it around.

Send an envoy to Sheff. As I recall, he was in the midst of construction. Our envoy should offer good rates on stone. This offer should extend to wealthy merchants and other people of note within Sheff's lands.

A wall and watchtowers sounds good, though at the moment we should keep them simple. A wooden palisade, yes. If we make it a square barrier, than a simple watchtower in each corner, or if the wall is more rounded, then one at each direction, NSE and W sounds good.

We need to make our domain more inviting so as to attract more immigrants. Lately we haven't had any net gains in population growth. For that end, we need more attractive amenities, but more importantly, we need more jobs. Undertaking enhanced building projects could free up room in which we could advertise the need for immigration, as well as new opportunities. Newcomers can help with the various construction projects we've come up with, and once things are squared away, begin work in the new fields of work we create.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/23/09(Wed)05:22 No.7253974
He'll work on improving the strains of the crops, removing diseased crops, etc. He can advise on matters to do with plants and crops. General agricultural stuff basically. He's scholar level around here, most people know shit about crops except how to farm them. Also can research agricultural stuffs.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:22 No.7253975

Stone walls would likely take longer to construct, during which time they'd be pretty much useless.

I'd recommend starting with a ditch-and-rampart setup, then pallisades, then reinforce/replace that with stone once we've quarried enough of it.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)05:25 No.7253989

That sounds pretty good. If he can identify crops that'd be suited to the land we have available then he'll be worth his wage.

I'm in favour of hiring the mage subject to haggling and, as mentioned, confidentiality.

I'd say our biggest concern right now is our size. We need more people, and in turn a larger military force. The situation with Sylem WILL come to blows eventually. A dozen soldiers and a mediocre militia will not cut it.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/23/09(Wed)06:14 No.7254336
Erik tells you crossbows are expensive, and need specially trained troops.

Oil? You don't have any of that.

You're still gonna need a smithery and a smith to smelt it into anything useful.

That'll come later, but being a source of iron, even a quality such as this, is better than nothing. Having a small stockpile of our own will be good.

We're probably not going to get large enough ourselves before the battle comes, but we've forged strong alliances, hopefully we can receive enough aid to make it an even battle.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/23/09(Wed)06:20 No.7254391
You can get some of the peat people to start gathering this as well, as opposed to getting peat if you like. You'll want a place to store it though. It's rust resistant and that, so an open stockpile will work for a while.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)06:23 No.7254415
The spear heads was a good purchase. Assuming we'll be on defense, which seems likely, we'll be at the advantage. We won't know exactly when the attack will occur, or what it will entail, but it will be on our ground which we've hopefully prepared in advance.

With planning and effective preperation, we can whittle down an attacking force immensely, at least cutting their morale. Peat firebombs was a good idea, but I guess we have no flammable oils to work with. Having a wall, even crude, with a small trench encircling the outer perimeter should help keep them away, while watch towers, hopefully with trained bowmen, should help at first. That is of course if we build those.

Beyond that, we don't have anything of real value save our friendly forces. But in the case of us being attacked, which as I've said, seems most likely, they'll be of no use, since it would take weeks for their forces to gather and arrive at our village, where we'll already have been executed.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)06:24 No.7254419
Would this cut into our peat income?

Have some of them begin to gather it. For now, we can store it in the small storage area in the keep.

Yes. You could sell the bog iron, but iron itself isn't as hard to find around here, due to much less demand.

    Numbers people!
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)06:29 No.7254460
5 to gather peat. It'll cut our peat income by 25%, but we aren't currently hurting for money, and iron could prove very helpful in the future.

Sheff and the Kingdom of Seakay are only a few days on horseback.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)06:31 No.7254474
If iron is already common in the marketplace with low demand, might it not be more economically viable to just buy the iron?

How much would a unit of iron cost, Quest Lord?
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)06:32 No.7254483
Yes. But we're a tiny village, with a crude wooden wall. Sheff is a few days away, but his army isn't standing, I'm sure. To gather them would take a day at least. Probably more. To march to us would take several.

We don't know Sylem's capacity for war, but we can assume it is enough to crush us. We must assume this. Three, four, or five days is an impossible amount of time to expect to survive an assault and siege.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)06:33 No.7254491
Not to mention guys, the value of peat is dropping steadily. I believe we may be flooding the market place.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)06:33 No.7254494
But most of their forces wouldn't be on horseback and they'd need to be mobilised. By the time Sylem was knocking on our door it's too late to ask for help.

To get help from allies we'd need an early warning system. Spies would be one option, befriending Lords whose land he'd need to march through another.
    >> Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 12/23/09(Wed)06:38 No.7254526

Unknown, you'd have to find a buyer. We're probably looking at a silver for a unit of iron though.

I'm aussie, and we're talking density like the phrase of speach, not real world density, or your european density. You don't have real flies over there any ways.

Indeed, I just changed it so 1 time costs count there.

Can I get a 2nd? Alchemy =/= horticulture, so you'd be as handy as a peasant, though you'd learn faster. Help will be to look through the fields for rotting ones, odd ones, big ones, and to the labour part of his job.

Sure, not right away, I'll have it for next thread if I remember. You have Seakay to the south, no-one in particular to the north and west, Lyann to the southeast, Sylem east of him, and the area to the direct east and northeast is owned by the Gorns, the Dukes of the Westerlands. The current Duke is Ara, an old miser who has recently taken on from his hierless brother Itsa. Major nobility who Lyann and Sylem owe their alegence to, sits under the King of Erondia, in power.

Not that I'm saying that we shouldn't throw Sylem over a barrel and fuck him for all he's worth, but we don't need to be shoving that right under Sheff's nose. Also, Sarah is already pretty impressed with us. We'll have opportunities to do this appropriately, all this rushing just seems like it would end poorly.

She's got a library to learn from. You have Erik, who hasn't read extensively on the matter and only owns a few odd scrolls. You can learn faster then her with a teacher but she has new material for a fair while. . .

Note I've rolled for this month (hidden) already, I'll start asking in the new month though.

Not his schtick. And Mages are usually a kind of sorcerer/wizard who have both innate and trained magics, the trained magics generally unique to them, as it's to focus their own sorcery. Only the best of the sorcerers are picked to apprentice to a mage, as it's a lot of work. They're often very focused depending on what their innate magic is like. Also, mages only teach mages with similar magics, meaning they're even rarer. Journyman mages are a lucky find, and wander about doing odd jobs like journyman wizards or sorcerers, but will charge omre, are rarer and often more specialised in their magics. This guy does metal magic. That's it.

He says that alchemy is a little pracitced art in Erondia, and is actually outlawed in some regions. The FAR east has alchemists of note (note this is a loooooooooooong way away) as do the eastern dwarves (north and east, closerm then the far east, but still pretty dman far away). Scrolls are easier to find, most major libraries should have some. The Westerlands are easy on alchemists, but they're not in great demand, as gold created by alchemy is illegal tender, and as such not worth nearly as much. It's more expencive to hire an alchemist capable of creating gold then the gold is worth, as by that stage they have other uses. Their scrolls are around though, as they were fashionable some time ago, and their writings remain.

He's found 5 plots worth of "seeds", etc. which store easily for:

and he's bought a bull and some cattle. (3 cows, a calf and a bull).

He brought in a few migrants from the south as well.

In addition to this, he found something you might like.
"M'lord, I'm pleased to anounce I've bought you an alchemancer's kit. Only a basic one, but it's in good nick and I've got a guarantee on it, if it fails and you can show it was a flaw in the kit. Want to give it a go?"

    Awesome dwarf is awesome.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)08:08 No.7255141
So what does our bonus actually do?

He's growing, and fast. I'm assuming you're spending a little time each month hunting, etc. What you roll for is what you spend your work hours that month doing.

Now, you've got a free alchemy test. In the future these will take a week (-1 from your roll for the month, can stack) or a month for a slow test (+5 on the alchemy roll).

You can experiment to increase your skill the hard way, or can do any alchemists tasks you learn. At the moment you know experimentation, and ash to lye. However you can't make commercial amounts of lye solo, and don't have the stuff to do it largescale.

All of these are a roll to get under your alchemy skill (5) with the worst result always failing, until you're skill is double the skill needed.

    Simple expeirment (d8)
    Hard Experiment (d12)
    Ash to Lye (d6)
You can do a dangerous experiment which will give a +1 modifier to any passes, but a -1 modifyer to fails. A result of 0 (nat 1 with -1 mod) will result an a serious faliure, and will likely HURT (d10+3 on crit fail table)
Any critical faliures otherwise will roll a d5 on the alchemy critical fail chart, wanting low.

    No pigs or chickens?

Can add it to any roll when inspiring people is wanted. Feel free to ask for rolls in order to achieve something, it will give a chance of failiure, but also epic success.

He claims they were unusually expensive, and not worth the money at the present time.

He's a trader, mainly of junk, basic supplies and food, stuff he cal sell to villages, and some minor lords/knights like you. This acquisition was something he got from another dwarven trader he knows who'd imported it from the Tojo Isles (to the south of Erondia, an Erondian provice, technically, like you but taxed heavily for their goods. Smugglers get some stuff out cheap though, like this kit.

Talk it up, choose one to roll, then I'm off to bed.

A successful experiment will increace alchemy knowledge, a fail will do nothing. HArder experiemts have bigger bonuses.

I vote ash to lye. May as well start with something we can't really fuck up.
    >> Anonymous 12/23/09(Wed)08:30 No.7255313
    rolled 1 = 1

If there is no objection, I am rollan so Quest Lord can go to bed.

Alchemy score increased by 0.1, and a small amount of lyre was procured for your alchemy set (+1 bonus on next experent roll)

Note that 0.1 isn't much, but not as little as it sounds. Without a teacher or scrolls, 0.1 is equal to a small experiment normal success.
