Its June 4th, 2011. A few weeks ago, the discovery of a major space anomaly that threatened the Earth sent the United States into chaos.

You are: Richard Donaldson, former L.A. P.D. After landing in Bolinder Field - Tooele Valley Airport, not far out of Salt Lake city, you gassed up an SUV and made your way to Brian's home in the outskirts of Grantsville.

When you arrived you attempted to sneak your way into the building to see if it was safe, and you got hit in the head with a frying pan by Jessica, Brian's wife, for your trouble.

You have: One 9mm handgun, and 4 full magazine of 17 rounds, the fifth mag is short 4 shots. One Remington870 Shotgun (currently equipped as main weapon) with 7 shells. Just short of 2 weeks provisions (food, water), a Tazer with a full battery and your badge. You also have a SUV (equip with fuzzy dice at Brian's insistance)

Brian has the other handgun, with a full magazine as he hasnt fired a shot, he can fly the plane.

Now that its morning and your head isnt pounding anymore, first order of business could be any number of things. You could pump Jessica for information about whats been happening locally, or what she knows on a national scale. You could assess the house for supplies. You could check in with Brian.

You do just that. Your head wasnt pounding, but it had that painful kind of pulse it can get.

Brian and Jessica are in the kitchen as well. Jessica mumbles and apology, while Brian just looks happy to be back at his home.

"Well, I heard about the big report on the news about the space thing, but I didnt watch it, i'm feeling kinda stupid about that now. Around here the panic started in the cities and spread out into the towns. Here in Grantsvile though, cops kept the place together for a good while, it might still be ok, but it was starting to fall apart last I went to get groceries, and then those guys broke in and I decided to bunker down here. I heard on the radio that the East Coast is starting to calm down, but everything is still messed up, with contradicting messages, so I cant be sure."

Aside from the general things a medium sized country house would have (Tv, fridge, ect) The house has about 2 weeks worth a groceries for 2 people, a small portable tv/radio, Jessica's laptop, and propane tanks in the back yard from Brian's occasional attempts at grilling. ("Every time he nearly sets himself on fire, I dont know how but he does")
    >> Researcher Sam 11/28/09(Sat)20:32 No.6912601
Well, I guess the thing to do now is decide whether we stay here with the two of them for awhile, go on alone, or attempt to convince them to go with us.

I vote we ask them to come with us to our parents.

    >> Alebak !!GutpvEm2fJX 11/28/09(Sat)20:38 No.6912681
Jessica seems to lean toward approval of the idea.
"If they're breaking into houses around here, it wont be safe here forever."
As glad as Brian was to get home, he wants to get Jessica to as safe a place as possible, so he agrees to the plan. (He'd be in more danger staying here than her, she's a full head taller than him and beat up a bunch of looters on her own)

Ask Brian how much of it will fit in the plane. If we can't take it all, order of importance:

laptop and charger (she has a charger, right?)
    portable tv/radio.

I can't see a use for the propane, so I'd leave it there.
    >> Researcher Sam 11/28/09(Sat)20:44 No.6912745

Agreed. Though make sure to take non-perishables as priority.

It might just be a single engine Cessna , but it should fit 3 people and a few backpacks worth of stuff.

With the addition of Jessica's food, and refilling the water bottles at the sink, you've now got about 2 and a half weeks worth of provisions for 3 people.

    >>I can't see a use for the propane, so I'd leave it there.

Ok. Pack everything into SUV. Roll up windows. Don't stop for anything. Brian drives us back to the airport. Can Jessica use a gun? If so, give her the handgun, tell her to be ready to use it if we're forced to stop. We'll have the shotgun ready.
    >> Alebak !!GutpvEm2fJX 11/28/09(Sat)20:56 No.6912891
Thats certainly a plan. Jessica went hunting with her father when she was younger, so while she might be skilled with a handgun, "I know which end goes bang" she says sarcastically.

Do you want to go straight to the airport, or do you want to check out Grantsville proper? There ARE a few stores there that would be worth checking out, a pharmacy and a gun store, Brian and Jessica confirm.

After double and triple checking everything, you're off!

You take the same backwoods path around Grantsville that you took on the way in.

Suddenly, you hear the loud and sharp 'CRACK's of a falling tree and a fairly large Fir slams across the road a few yards in front of you. forcing you to stop.

    WHAT DO /tg/?

Normally I'd say hit reverse, but if it's a trap they've accounted for that.

Is there a ditch? What's the environment near the road like.

LiIkely option is going to be having everyone get down, rip the rear view mirror off and use it to check for ambushers.

You aim the shotgun at the tree line along both sides of the road, checking the entirety of it that you can see. You tell Brian and Jessica to do the same. The fir in front of the SUV looks healthy, it was most certainly cut down.

Suddenly, a man steps out from behind one of the trees along the road ahead of you.

Pop the door and use it as a shield. Aim the shotgun at the man through the gap between the door and the SUV. Tell the other two to watch your back.
    >> Alebak !!GutpvEm2fJX 11/28/09(Sat)21:17 No.6913142
The man is fairly young, likely early thirties, and looks like he went a few rounds with a up and coming boxer, his face is a mishmash of multicolored healing bruises. He is currently holding a machete and pointing it at the car.

"YOU STAY WHERE YOU ARE" he yells, angrily.

"Oh" says Jessica, almost sounding bored as she covers the back window, while looking over her shoulder. "Its this guy again"

Rather than wait for him to pull some crazy shit, you open the door and half step out, using the door to shield yourself as you level the shotgun at him through the gap between the door and the car itself.

The man's eyes widen at the sight of armed resistance and pops back behind the trees.

Somewhere behind you, what sounds like a rifle goes off, and ricochets off the side of the car.

    "Brian? BRIAN? OH GOD."
Jessica pulls out a bottle of rubbing alcohol from one of the backpacks, its basically all they really had.

If no one's come out to mess with us yet, I see no reason not to do a somewhat more thorough search. We've already risked stopping here; we might as well do it right. Search the whole place, including stopped cars.

See if we can get a siphon for gas, by the way. Even if we don't need one right now, it could be handy to have later.

While you dont want to stay any longer than you need too, the fact that the place is abandoned leaves up an opportunity thats too tempting to ignore. You check the Garage, looking for anything particularly useful.

You do manage to find a gas siphon, and in the the back room you ffffFFFFFFFFFFFUCK THERES A DEAD BODY IN HERE.

After getting over your initial surprise (and the smell), you notice that the body is a few days old

It seems that the cause of death was excessive blunt trauma to the back of the head, probably from one of the tools a garage like this would have lying around. Unlike the security guard in LAX, there is nothing you can do for him (A search shows he didnt have a wallet, or anything in his pockets, he may have been killed for his belongings)

You decide that its best to get out of there.

With Jessica still at the wheel, you make you're way down to the air port. Its some distance away, and Brian slips in out of consciousness, more from the pain killers than the blood loss. When you arrive, its a different scene than the one you left.

There seems to be MORE wreckage in the parking lot, and some of the cars that were in one piece are still burning! You dont see anyone though.

You have Jessica stop the SUV, and you wait. The isnt any movement from the windows out front, and its likely that you could have been seen as you made your way up the highway here. If theres someone there, they're being as cautious as you. The wreckage seems to be contained to the parking lot only, the building itself in still relatively untouched.

You look for a way to get Brian back to 100% in a more timely manner while loading the plane back up. Unfortunately, all you manage to find in the hanger is some warm soda.

You stand guard until the next morning, switching shifts with Jessica while Brian tries to sleep off the painkillers, blood loss, and general shock.
"You know, if he ran into the guy who shot him, he probably wouldnt even be mad. He's too nice" remakes Jessica.

Brian remarks that he feels good enough to fly. He slept a good eight hours, so its good to see him bouncing back.

Before going flying, check to make sure that the runway is clear. We might have to move cars or do something similarly inconvenient.

Make sure that Brian's wound is clean. Change the bandages, disinfect again if necessary. We cannot afford an infection.

First, you check Brian's bandages, they seem clean, but you admittedly aren't a doctor. Brian says that aside from the pain they feel fine. "I've always heard that an infection starts out with an itchy feeling, and well, I don't have that, so we should be good!"

One last sweep gives you the solvent Brian was looking for, and after a few minutes of proper application, the plane is slurless once more.

Jessica confirms that the runway is indeed clear.

Brian gassed up the plane when you landed last time.

Are you ready to go now, or do you have anything else?

I actually like the way that one is never quite sure if any given location has an encounter there or not. It makes things have a little bit of low-level tension at all times. That said, upping things from "easy" to "medium" might be in order.

I never said it had to be an encounter. There's all sorts of things outside the realm of basic combat encounter that can cause us trouble.

For instance, a vandalized plane. Landmines/explosive ambush on the runway. The plane lacking fuel since I don't think we ever refuelled it. That's just a few things for a specific area and focus, there are hundreds more possible.
