>your party is walking about and finds a dragon egg>it hatches and it's chromatic>it imprints on the partywhat happens next
As it grows, it invariably does mischievous or harmful things, testing its boundaries. It gets stronger and bigger and soon realizes it doesn't need to listen to you or anyone anymore. Eventually it goes off to find its own territory to claim, possibly eating a few people in the process.
>>63535258Sell on black market for mad dosh.

>>63535258within ten minutes of attempting to raise it, my party proves so inept, dragon society forms a hathling protection services JUST to take the child from us.
>>63535258Knowing my friends? Wife husbandry
>>63535258Kill it. It's a fucking chromatic dragon. Innately, it's a heinious and evil monster. There is no other right answer.
I actually ran a game where the premise was that the party found the last chromatic dragon egg. But keeping with my group they threw the whole plot out the window and attempted to perform a ritual to hatch an avatar of bahamut.
>>63535755I'm retarded. Metallic egg.
>>63535652>party later finds a metallic egg>HPS finds out>"It's just a metallic, those stuck up bastards don't need help.">"Yeah, but this is... THOSE guys we're talking about.">"I hate that that's a valid argument."It's like 8 Bit Theater levels of "The Light Warriors do good for the world"

>>63535258The party gets an adorable mascot to feed scraps of meat and play with, and as it grows it takes more of an interest in following their "helping protect people from immediately dangerous monsters" thing, because the "alignment from birth" meme is dumb.Though, it does take awhile until the locals trust the dragon to not do typical evil dragon things, and it leans that strangers will generally assume the worst on seeing a dragon. >>63539223>through watching you, it learns the value of deceit and waiting for the perfect betrayal>in full view, it practices this on "do-gooders" who would try to stand against you>playing an abused and repentant creature under an iron rule>always turning on them when they're least prepared, to stop their meddling>for the dozenth time, a group of "heroes" confront you, just before a key point in your next step in power>for the dozenth time, your dragon stands behind them, prepared to wipe them out in a surprise attack from a "reformed friend">you give the command, it rears up, the party turns around in shock and disbelief>it strikes true>your life is removed from the world>the heroes rejoice, and congratulate it>it grins, tail swishing behind it>and then happily demolishes them in a massive, extended deluge of fireI just really like dragons succeeding.
>>63539364>>through watching you, it learns the value of deceit and waiting for the perfect betrayalanon, where do I practice deceit? I am 100% honest with my malice
Teach it to become asian noodle chef, give it diet rich in fatty meats and ale so it gets a primordial pouch and becomes succulent. Watch as ghost as it becomes detective after i get to take a bullet for it one rainy night in neo tokyo. But he becomes the origami killer in the end.
>>63535258Nothing, because you're all dead and Grey before it grows an inch. But at least you had a cute mascot for a while!

>>63539416Sounds like an inneficient way to be malicious.
>>63540026maybe, but its the fun waywhats the point of being evil if you dont wear 20 skulls and call yourself "the destroyer of worlds"
>>63535712Do was this guy.
>>63535285Doesn't that process still take decades?
>>63539223It's a dragon. It does not obey commands. You'd have better luck commanding a volcano. Just Dominate it or Lobotomize it surgically, and pray it never breaks free or get's a regeneration spell respectively.
If one were to eat a small dragon what parts get thrown out besides the obvious like horns and such?
>>63535712>Chromatic dragons are always evil>Metallic are always good>Everything has to be black and whiteYou must be a boring dm.
the players whore it out to dragonborn to buy healing shit
>>63535258Party fuck toy until it gets to a size that's a problem or it becomes a problem some other way then we break it down into sellable components like fine leather and meat.
>>63535258Clearly we need to teach it the value of Friendship (tm) so it doesn't turn evil! After all, this thing's more intelligent than some people we know. If we can nurture it in just such a way as to overcome its powerful instincts, we'll score a victory for Free Will!At the very least, let's try to keep him away from any bad influences.
>>63542230>chromatic>doesn't turn evilThese are mutually exclusive things.
>>63542316Again, this is a sapient being. By definition, it can be more than its nature. Self-awareness and the ability to conceive of the world in abstract or nonmaterial ways are things that afford free will. Is an Elf, a Dwarf, or a Halfling an automaton, as you insist this Dragon is?
>>63542375Irrelevant. Demons are evil and they're just as sapient and just as incapable as chromatics are at being Good.
>>63542419And yet some have risen before, rare as they are. If there is no hope for them, no hope for this creature, then there is no hope for any of us to be more than our nature. If there is no hope, then there is no point.
>>63542491>there is no hope for any of us to be more than our natureGlad you learned that valuable life lesson even if it is a bit late in the game for it.
>>63541969The throat muscles are a delicacy as long as they havent matured into resistance to flame spewing. The scales of a baby dragon are thin and can be deep fried into chips, just salt brine them first. Serve with leviathan caviar and creme fraiche. There's not enough meat on the shanks of the young ones to merit the tendon hassle if eaten whole, i'd advice making confit and using the meat for a nice dryad salad. The wings are sparse in meat, but unused and -very- tender. Try a barbecue marinade and make real HOT hotwings. Unfortunately you'll only have two unless you managed to get the whole cluth of eggs. The liver is usually of poor quality, being freshly hatched, is usually small, lean and filled with toxic metabolites. I reccomend throwing out or if you must, detox extensively by repeated rinsing, drying and grinding into meal to spice pate. In all honesty it's suited more for spell reagents, those uncultured wand-wavers will buy anything as long as it's from a dragon, no eye for high quality ingredients. But the apex of cooking young dragons is this; first you drown the entire baby dragon in a bath tub of high quality brandy, then you tie it up, deep fry it in aboleth lard, let drip, season and serve in a crust of finest flaky pastry (use halfling butter... What? Made by halflings! Not made from! Are you a psychopath or something?) - then the crux, consumption. You have to somehow shapeshift into a huge or larger being, ( i can reccomend a dire grizzly bear, very good sense of smell, surprisingly well developed sense of taste) and you eat the baby dragon whole, making sure to bite down hard on the chest cavity in order to experience the ecstacy of the crackling, popping ribs and the savory juice the organs expel, all rising to a climax of salt, savory hot fat, brandy and smoky dragon umami. Truly the apex of culinary decadence. Make sure you give the one finger salute to any god who happens to be watching and (most likely) judging you.
>>63542531Then why are we here? Just to suffer?
>>63542375Free will is rebelling and working against a guiding force, authority, societal norms, genetic predisposition or religion. True freedom is knowing you have that choice and consciously, rationally and genuinely choose not to.
>>63542555Interesting. What are your thoughts on usage or consumption of other choice parts. Like say, the brain, heart, tongue, or genitals?
>>63541171Not really. Dragons are born very smart, in some cases due to ancestral memories, but otherwise you're dealing with a toddler minimum after a week. And it doesnt require a lot for an instinctively evil dragon deciding to screw your rules and leave. If you're a poweful adventurer, you could keep them by force, but then they just see you as a captor imprisoning them and won't actually learn anything good
>>63542557That's not how this works. There is no "Why" in this system. Any "Why" you'd find is a man made construct that exists only in the mind that holds it and nowhere else. Ex: Fairness/Balance don't exist. There is no physical law of Fair. Any possibly occurence of it is merely the construct occuring in a mind and the mind attempting to enforce it on the local enviroment to a poor degree but it never actually tangibly exists as it simply cannot. There is no "Reason" behind You/Them/Us existing and there never will be outside unique singular standalone instances in the mind of the beholder and nowhere else and even then it's not a fact but a pseudo-superimposed supposition. The closest you can get to an answer to your question is: "Because random chance occured."Coincidentally, under this system you yourself can MAKE a constructed reason for you to exist if you so choose to have one or really need one.

>>63542555Ah, red dragon ortolan. Pure succulence! A man of refinement and taste I see!
>>63542783God damn it, anon! Do you want ubermensch in the government? Because that's how you get ubermensch in the government.

>>63542873Coloreds are always evil.
Raise it as my son so he may carry on my name and legacy through the agesAlso teach him that halflings are not to be trusted
>>63542630The brain is very large for the dragon's size, i'd say serve a'la natural with crackers in order to not overpower the light buttery taste. Dont worry about any contamination, happily, freshly hatched dragons are completely sterile! This is due to the barrior of the amniotic egg membrane and the high heat the mother provides which is needed to mature the clutch. (and for this reason, allways store dragon eggs intended for hatching at -atleast- 300 C' - if someone sells you a cold dragon egg, they're ripping you off!) Although, some people argue that since humans and dragons have the capacity to interbreed (yuck) the dragons cerebrospinal complex is similar enough in protein makeup to infect humans with something called Mad-dragon disease, according to them the so called "prions" are heat stable to upwards of 900 degrees and thus could lead to infection. At any rate the risk is low, and is life worth living if you cant savour the smooth buttery yet strangely piquant taste of fresh baby dragon brains? As for the heart, stew or pie, in combination with something light, like angel brisket(Archons of the third choir of light are especially tender) or nymph couvette. As for the genitals, that's tricky, personally i am of the school of thought that genitals, as a general rule, isn't a very attractive or worthwhile cut. They're (mostly) served for the novelty of it, for the purpose of heathen fertility rituals, because they're cheap "waste cuts" or simply to challenge the cook to produce fine food out of hard to cook ingredients. That being said, since dragon penii are muscular (like all members of the Draconix Rex family i would most probably fillet the muscle, slice them thinly, season lightly with salt and pepper, drizzle a bit of treantberry oil infused with underdark pink mushroom oil and top with nice paperthin flakes of dwarven rock-crystal coalcheese and maybe some nice crisp stranglefrond salad leaves as well.

>>63541842>just use magic to enslave itI dont see where you got the idea that this wouldn't be done?
>>63543615The word "raise" it implied teaching, rearing or indoctrinating, measures that are all invalidated by the Dominate spell since it would either be under your dominate spell from birth and thus reluctant to teach or train or be dominated later in life in which case it would still resist your efforts and all training rendering it more capeable would be empæoyed rowards the effort of resisting you.
>>63543724raise in the sense that it is currently a baby, its not exactly going to be a very good weapon in its current formbut the best way to go about this is to murder it and raise it as an undead servant
>>63542375What do you think sapience means?
This thread reminds me of that one greentext about the guy who used a hatchling with weak mind-control magic for a "relaxation" sort of business. It was really cute and sweet, does anyone have it?>>63543852Wouldn't it be better to go after a larger dragon? Undead or not, a mere hatchling wouldn't be too effective.
>>63544007exactly, you wait for it to grow up while keeping it in a controlled state or somethingkill itthen raise it as your pet WMD
>>63535258I've always wanted to play as a beastmaster ranger whose companion is a baby dragon, on a quest for a means of magical aging so he may actually get to ride the dragon someday. The baby dragon would be functionally identical to a default beast companion at low levels, not even able to fly, but I would persuade the DM to let me upgrade it with expensive rituals. It can't be unbalanced, because beastmaster rangers are the weakest rangers in every edition, and there are already level-appropriate magic items in the game that have the same effects.
>>63544336>it can't be unbalanced because I'll own the most overpowered and unbalanced thing you could possibly own....but not right away
>>63543988It means exactly what he said, ability to think and act on it beyond impulses. Its not the same as sentience which is a lower level (just means they can perceive tgeir surroundings but are not in self control/free will, most animals are this)
>>63544336>It can't be unbalanced, because beastmaster rangers are the weakest rangers in every edition,Just because RAW beastmaster rangers are weak doesn’t mean that giving them a fucking adult dragon (due to ageing spells/rituals) isn’t unbalanced as hell. That being said, what you have isn’t a necessarily bad idea, but you need to accept that the dragon even if it starts young is very unlikely to just be some dumb beast and you’ll need to work hard to establish and maintain a relationship through strong role play.
>>63544761I'd okay it. If a player invests time and effort into a numerical stat advantage (that in this case comes with all the disadvantages a free willed sentient companion entails) why shouldn't he be allowed to? As in all these cases i follow my trusty rule of thumb; "Say yes to martials, say no to full-casters"
Open a Gate to the 9 Hells and ask Tiamat what she would like our party to do with Junior.
>>63535258Kill it, its an incarnation of Evil. Its essence is impurity. It dies.
>>63543852Any non-free willed undead is shit. And a dracolich or a vampire dragon entails the same problems as mentioned above. Jesus, if you want power so bad just skip right to dominating a king or general, it's easier and more effective. Or make a fuckhueg golem, golems are badass, magic immune, don't disobey orders and can be pimped with tassels and tuxedo's and shit. Nothing screams "Fuck you" like a winged adamantine golem dressed as a colorblind pimp stomping your shit to pieces.
>>63535258Get the paladin of Bahamut to raise it, just for shits and giggles.Naturally name it Trogdor.
>>63541171Not since GoT. But yes, most purchased campaigns would be over before it grew to even a rideable size.
>>63535258Dragon watches the party age out their lifespans and die out of morbid curiosity and dedicates their subsequent fuckery to them, though they will never admit it. It judges all other adventuring parties it encounters using their 'family' as the standard, naturally they all fall short and deserve death.
