Hey elegan/t g/entlemen, please help me make a list of 100 weird & unusual dimensions that I could use when my PCs step through a dimensional portal. Short description, a couple of sentences would be fine, but it has to be human-habitable and not just an alternate Earth (like everything the same as Earth but Elvis is president). >A plane of massive grey-silver plates of metal shifting across each other in hundreds of layers, inhabited by a race of crystalloids who communicate via subsonics.>A purple-blue inferno of superheated gases occasionally coalescing into red-black balls of material to stand on, inhabited by 2'-tall dwarves made of unburnable obsidian and tar. Large watery jellyfishes slowly grow and steam away around these (gemstone?) balls and provide a point of survival for those not immune to heat.
>>61576698Everything the same as Earth but there's no borders, no religion, no possessions. As to why anyone is still alive, I'll leave you to fill in that blank with game-specific fluff
>>61576698>a light-crystal plane filled with black fluid that corrupts the crystals... and makes them sentient, although mostly evil. Sparkling slimes are the animals of this place and the light originates from a couple dozen micro-suns
>>61576698Gunmarda. The plane is dead. Ridiculous numbers of advanced unique weapons are stored high above out of reach in stasis fields. Someone killed a world just to have someplace to store their weapons.
>>61576933That's pretty nifty.
The mansplane. A perfectly reasonable man attempts to explain every single thing to the party each time they encounter something.
>>61576698>Infinite porous coral plane with humanoid colorful frilled sea slugs as the dominant species, at war with mantra rays armed with lasers they got from a more advanced interdimensional species.
Huge grasslands inhabited by herds of giant antelope and meaty floating blimps. Everything above the grassline gets hovered up and eaten by enormous combine-harvester Monsters (draconic or demonic?). Consequently all the humans live in towns a few feet below the ground.
>>61577168This is not a weird dimension, it's just Somerset
>>61577192Okay, I kek'd.
>masses of squiggly tubes and circular tunnels carved from stone, metal and bone, like a vast intestinal network the size of a city. Inhabited by occasional giant parasites and flushed out with Strange chemicals several times per day.
>>61577003I like this one.>A plane where the sun is dying and no stars are visible. All creatures on the plane are inexplicably lethargic. Even natural phenomenons like flowing water and cool breezes feel somehow slower than they should be.
>>61576698>Gorax Prime>Brown and pink flesh comprises most of the plane apart from blue-green haze. Houses, castles and forests are all made of meat, bone, blood and gristle which regrows infinitely. Only medium-size insects inhabit the plane, feeding on the corruption.
>Rocky badlands with not a shred of plant or animal life. Howling winds of hurricane speed periodically scour the landscape and the only shelter is to dig through very hard granite and gneiss into caves...which are inhabited by medieval-era trolls who subsist on gemstones and metal veins.
>>61576698>Geometron>Huge slabs and blocks of various hard stones with no flat surfaces to stand on. Sentient spider-monkeys, carnivorous snails and huge flies/crickets/mosquitoes dwell here. Water flows in constant rivers and waterfalls but cannot pool anywhere and light also seems trapped, moving from chamber to chamber from an unknown source.
1. City-sized sentient trees using bladders of hot helium to fly through an infinite asteroid field, snatch tasty asteroids with their prehensile roots and eat them. Each asteroid is populated by sentient bipedal rabbits who are identical in every way except for the hats they wear, which are not repeated once throughout the infinity of the asteroids. They are extremely xenophobic and wage wars whenever two asteroids approach each other closely enough. Their main weapon are operatic castrati whose vocal cords became capable of producing shotgun-level sonic blasts after a special operation. After they die, their ghosts gravitate towards a large nebula composed entirely of ghosts, whose luminescence serves as the main source of light in this dimension.2. This dimension is filled entirely by a colossal disembodied head called Eric. From time to time, pimples appear on Eric's skin that burst to reveal gentlemen in zoot suits called Eric Jr. Eric Jr. defend themselves by detaching their heads and throwing them as bowling balls, using three convenient holes they have in the backs of their skulls. The head explodes on impact and a new one grows in its place. All Eric Jr. are divided into four mafias based on the colour of their zoot suit: Camorra for red suits, Yakuza for blue suits, Triad for green suits and Bratva for transparent suits. All four groups engage in weekly Olympic Games on Eric's Ajna chakra, which gives Eric sexual pleasure and makes him sweat. Eric Jr both use the sweat to cook bubble tea, their main source of sustenance, and exploit the fact that sweatiness causes Eric to get more pimples, expanding their numbers.
>>615780133. An infinite number of hotel rooms connected by doors, windows and ladders. Of their infinite number, no two are exactly the same, but one thing that unites all of them is that their walls are composed of gums, and all of the furniture is carved from teeth growing out of these gums. The hotel rooms are populated by finger-sized cyclopses with a helicopter rotor in place of a horn which they use to fly around. The cyclopses live in miniature space stations floating in the middle of the rooms, which use anti-gravity fields powered up by solving sacred crosswords that high priests receive in revelations caused by rituals of tantric sex. The cyclopses cannot touch any of the gums or teeth, the briefest touch causes them to wither, fall to the floor and turn into thirsty mummies that are cursed to drink saliva for all eternity.4. An infinite tungsten pipe the width of a city that winds and stretches throughout the entirety of the dimension. Both the inside and the outside of the pipe have Earth-level gravity allowing to live on them. The outside is populated by geometers, a race of wireframe humanoids resembling 3D models without textures. They spend their days trying to calculate the one unifying formula of the entire Universe by using torture calculators: elaborate torture engines with living slaves chained inside. They make inputs by using assembly codes that translate numbers into specific types of pain to be applied, and use similar codes to translate the resulting shouting into numbers. The inside serves as the source of these slaves: it's populated by two-headed minotaurs who use ritual Morris dancing to cause grass to grow on the inside of the pipe and a sun to course back and forth through it, supporting an ecosystem.
>>615780485. Spiderwebs with threads thick as tree trunks anchored to an infinity of levitating crystals of amber, luminescing with the halos of fly angels trapped inside - basically, standard Christian angels, but with fly eyes and wings. If freed by shattering a crystal, these angels proselytise a radical religion called Sinisterity, stating that all molecules with a right-handed chirality are a sin against their God, Saint Southpaw. This includes human DNA, so they catch all humans and offer them a choice between disintegration and a mirroring ritual that changes the chirality of their DNA and transforms them into Antipodes, which walk on their hands, talk backwards, are born old and grow younger until turning into a fetus and then disappearing one day. The fly angels are opposed by a hivemind called Roscoe Amberdexter, who trapped them in crystals of amber in the first place. The hivemind includes three types of creatures: giant spiders with forty seven legs who have woven the webs serving as the ground, bloated gastropod toads who spit blobs of resin quickly hardening into amber and used to trap the angels, and snail centaurs with flail eyestalks. In truth, these are not separate creatures, but three genders of the same species.
>>61578013>>61578048>>61578072Oookaaaayyy...that is certainly unusual to the max.
>Corruscating solidified beams of light that you can stand on and ride around this dimension, which consists mostly of vortices, pools and majestic cathedrals formed of multi-colored light.
>>61576698The world is a seemingly infinite sky with an absolute up and down. Its flat, triangular planets are arranged in a Sierpinski Gasket, with the faces of the triangles facing "up" and "down". All planets have triangular lakes in their center, and two orbs of differing brightness orbit them, giving each flat world a day-night cycle. The entire universe is inhabited by the same set of crystalline and gelatinous creatures. The sapient jelly-like lifeforms, also present on all planets, have built large metropolises on the sandy terrain through a symbiosis with lesser, liquid-like creatures that can excrete a clamshell-like substance. However, they will go insane if introduced to any sort of change, mainly because they don't need that concept when their universe is unchanging.
>>61576698The Whizzard's Magical Realm
An infinite series of offices, restrooms, kitchens and technical rooms, filled with people doing meaningless work. The final boss is an actual boss.
>>61578478This sounds oddly familiar...
>Tropical islands with a huge surf...except the water is quite acidic and only crabshell-encrusted creatures can survive in it, feeding on masses of jellyfish and thorny fish. Humanoids are stout dwarves with thick rubbery & slimy skin who fish in crabshell boats and dive for uranium pearls, which they use for heat and industry (and which don't harm them).
>>6157669820/100 so far! Show us that vaunted creativity and above-average intelligence, /tg/!
>Rocky, cratered veldt with occasional forests and mountains. Rocks and boulders flying all over the place but only 50' or higher above the ground, from an asteroid belt that hovers in the sky. Other planets are also dangerously close and sometimes rip chunks of ground up via gravity.
>>61576698>Rick and MortyIt doesn't matter what anyone types. You're gonna send them to Buttworld and then fart up a storm.
>>61579295Buttworld is always an option and so is the Blender dimension. But let's not dwell on R&M too much.
>>61576746The communists took over the world. Not a difficult one.
>Warworld>Strewn with the rubble of 7 World Wars this hellish landscape of burning buildings, lobbed rockets and chattering gunfire is filled with dead bodies and 30 different factions of humanoids battling each other. None have ever invented nuclear weapons, thankfully.
It's a world of every imaginable fantasy trope, including self-contradicting ones. Especially self-contradicting ones.
>An infinitely growing city. Any rooms built there tend to grow over weeks and years, multiplying like living organisms, so that meat stores, libraries and blacksmith's forges stretch on for miles. The inhabitants multiply too, and are eager to mate with outsiders to fill out their properties.
>>61578013>>61578048>>61578072That is several levels of surrealism more than I am even capable of considering. Well done anon.
>>61576709>>61576777And teh dogescape
>Earth where everyone is biomodded in some, including the world’s first biopunk president, a man genetically engineered to be the perfect leader. Earth stands on the verge of transhuman paradise, but the baselines remained unconvinced. Now they plot to assassinate this president as he plots to transform the world into something unrecognizable. Forests, parks, rivers, mountains, all biopunk'd.
>>61576698>This dimension looks like the interior of a endless building, a hybrid of an apartment building and an industrial complex. It looks run down, rusty and decayed. Illumination is provided by sickly yellow lights on the ceiling.>Upon close inspection one can notice that some of the walls appear to have a fleshy texture and organic growths, some damaged sections have stains of dry blood. Unknown and foul smelling - sometimes acidic - substances are irregularly discharged via vents or drains. >In fact, the whole complex appears to be alive. The wind flows at regular intervals, as if the place is breathing. And strange, flesh abominations can be found roaming the halls. They are hostile, but mindless and individually weak.>A dimension that at first, appears to be just a black void. However, it is merely shrouded in extreme darkness - even those that could otherwise see in the dark, can't do it here. No matter how strong, any light source can only provide 3 feet of light or less. They also fizzle out immediately if no one is holding them.>Those with echolocation perceive the darkness as solid matter. And what little can be made out of the landscape appears to be a forest of massive and dead trees, but ruined buildings that would belong in a sprawling city can be found as well.>And irregularly, out of the corner of their eyes, they can spot shapes moving just at the edge of their lights. Mysterious sounds echo through the air, and often it sounds like some creature or entity is just outside of their line of sight, stalking.>Rarely, they can see another light in the distance, moving, probably a traveler like them. However that light is soon extinguished, followed by screams and terrible howls. Upon approaching its location, they can only find tattered remains of clothing, equipment, and the light source.
>>61580837>Silent Hill>Stranger Things
>>61581051The first one is a given, I even attached a pic of SH. But huh, I wasn't even thinking of ST while I wrote the 2nd, I can't argue that it does remind me of the upside-down now that I think about it.
>>61576698>The entire planet is covered head to toe in water, no land in sight>The only habitable areas are on top of the corpses of long dead titans
I'm gonna steal some ideas from somewhere else. >The Jinn-Empress sends forth her genie minions throughout the Multiverse, collecting favors by sending her servitors to do her bidding. The genies act as her eyes and ears, getting information, making pacts, gaining allies, until the time to strike comes. When it happens, the Jinn-Empress’s genie armies are unbeatable. Earth has come to her attention only recently. Those rare magic lamps which have showed up on Earth over the years were nothing more than criminals and exiles from the Jinn-Empress’s domain. But now a sharp increase in magic lamps have been noticed on Earth, so it’s time to reconnoiter the Jinn-Empress’s Homeworld. Just hope she doesn’t notice.
>>61576698>That one level of hell that's just chill centaurs who occasionally hunt sinners trying to leave a river of boiling blood.>The unremarkable demention: a plane so plain your party forgets anything about it after they leave>A dead god, who's decaying body is home to a civilization of parasites and scavengers, they're quite pleasant and try to get the party to stay and settle down. Not for any evil reason they just think a plane infinite meat is a good place too raise a family.>Eric's vill and the surrounding countryside. A plane created out of near infinite copies of the same village over and over and over agian. Every person in the villages acts almost like their own race and has stereotypes about them. >Ginny's are terrible bakers but good wife's anyway, Keiths can never be trusted but they make good shoes, Jenna's are all gosip hounds.
Rolled 9, 86 = 95 (2d100)OK, let's do some dice rolling. >2d100>https://brideofbigfoot.wordpress.com/2012/05/04/random-alternate-world-generator/
>>61581337>Inhabitants: Ninjas>Twist: The Terrible TowerPlace is just crawling with ninjas, but of course they look like normal people going about their work, farming, smithing, cooking, etc. The land is ruled by the Demon Towers, which oppresses everyone terribly. When lightning strikes the towers they are vulnerable, and that's when everyone leaps into their ninjas outfits and infiltrates the towers to kill the samurai-demon creatures inside.
Rolled 45, 42 = 87 (2d100)>>61581337
>>61581488>Inhabitants: Country Western Stars>Twist: Hollow EarthCountry stars have built enormous skyscraper sized guitars, kazoos and speakers, and have twanged so hard that the inside of the Earth fractured and became hollow, revealing the Hidden Masters of Metal & Rock and their One Path hordes of goblinoids. War commences!
A plane of infinitely tall trees. There is no known forest floor or canopy, just endless trunks and branches that can be up to hundreds of feet in diameter. It is inhabited by a race of intelligent avians similar in anatomy to harpies with limited technology.
Creepy cemetery arranged like a giant series of mazes and labyrinths, filled with political factions like anarchists, monarchists, fascists, communists, ethicists, anatomists, racialists, etc. All of them have been cyborgized by some Energy Beings and even the dead bodies are animated by wired reflexes and other sick cyberware...maybe the political rage feeds them and this is a farm?
>Three layers of 1) huge trees 2) tall bushes & cactuses 3) pleasant green meadows & hills. Inhabitants are ghostly people with 2 bodies each, a Day and Night body that take on different parts of their personalities. You can climb between layers but each traversal makes you more ghostly.
>Cities of the Wise>A pleasant landscape dotted with archaic-looking cities and temples, each inhabited by a single meditating, levitating wise man knowledgeable in one esoteric field. If asked, he will claim the other people ascended to a higher plane upon receiving his wisdom. The cities seem to be aging slowly and the wise men have terrible powers of insight and persuasion.
>Luminous Battlefields of Sinners – glowing radioactive and filled with orange gases, yellow rays and violet death beams, these cyclopean ruins are fought over by mecha and rusty warmachines. People have to live their whole lives inside the warmachines as the environment is deadly. They fight to cleanse the sins of "the Others" and hope for redemption for all the killing they do.
>Demense of Negation>A blue-grey desert topped by a black sky in which revolve 7 green suns. The sand is freezing cold and the winds bring shards of black ice that de-magic 1 item per hour. Nothing lives here except for obsidian scorpions, marble ants and ruby snakes.
>Steep mountains and karst formations covered in wet cloud forests, topped by citadels of devils and enchanters. Four-armed farmers reap berries and mushrooms growing on the mounts. Smoke and fog obscure movement and sight further than 30' but sometimes solidify to form bridges and ramps to inaccessible places of power and hidden monkey shrines.
>A planet that exploded but whose pieces were held together by gravimagics, it's now full of bubbles of air, water, magma, and earth islands of cities, lone laboratories, scattered farms, all existing as if nothing had happened…as long as you stay within their air/element bubble – outside is a howling chaos. Scientists have built special adamantium tunnels to join some islands back together.
>Forest of huge trees that grow in knots and spirals, inhabited by winged kobolds who are constantly on the move from rampaging green wyrms. The forest floor is covered with snakes who are controlled by lamias in conflict with aggressive medusas. Statues dot the trees and are entangled by vines and creepers. Only the reflective scales of ancient rainbow couatls can protect people against snakebite and pertification.
>A world constantly being destroyed and remade. A colossal roving dragon deity gorges himself on the terrain and vomits it our as slightly different terrain. Where once was a vast lake now is tundra after a few days feeding the dragon god. It's inhabitants are nomadic and the only pocket of stable space is the fortress of a minor god of Law.
>Broken rocks and desert arroyos with scattered, greenhouses, crystal pyramids and shimmering glass towers dotting the landscape. Thri-kreen scientists in ornithopters and biomech armor occasionally visit what appear to the techno-organic experiments in this mostly barren place. Strange but small mutants skulk in the crevasses and holes of the redstone hills.
OP here, I've compiled 53 so far. Thanks to everyone who's contributing. Keep going, teegee!
>Endless glaciers, some frozen, some melting, covered with a thick carpet of blue algae that is eaten by the animals and people of this place both. Magma Drakes occasionally bore tunnels through the glaciers during mating season, and various fungus & bacteria monsters make their home in the algae blooms.
>One hundred Spectral Kingdoms vie for supremacy over this land of the dead, using living mortals as summoned pawns in their horrific rituals. The forests are made of bones wrapped in tattered flesh, the lakes are ichorous, the deserts are of ash & bonemeal and the mountains are made of black glass.
>Dozens of highways suspended in azure cloudbanks criss-cross each other and only occasionally connect to bronze-and-amethyst clusters of towns. High speed racers of all makes and tech levels fly at hypersonic speeds across these highways, racing each other collecting trophies from any dimensional travellers they encounter. Some are heavily armed with phasic weapons while others are barbaric.
Alright, I have to jet, but before I go here's what I've got so far in a PDF. Only 43 more to go!
Bump for interest
This dimension is completely covered with cloth: the ground is woven wool, the waters velvet, the grass chenille. Humanoid moths are its sole inhabitants.
A small library floating in the ether. Its only inhabitant is a mad scribe who records everything that happens; these endless scratchings make up the contents of the library. The library is heated by a small furnace, and to power it the scribe throws the oldest remaining book into it every day.....A totally uninhabited, empty city. Anything brought into the dimension which isn't alive vanishes once unobserved. Living things age at an accelerated pace, eventually dying and vanishing like all other non-living matter.
Lightning-rails connect steampunk cities perched atop giant Monsters that slowly perambulate across a landscape of crushed forests and quarries. Cannon-fired rocketships get shot to moonbases and venusian canal works. Humans and elves use handheld electro guns to fry alien shapeshifters who may make up a quarter of the population.
> Senex> A steel ruin of a world, it's what a cyberpunk planet-sized super metropolis becomes after it dies. Mountains of scrap and rust, lakes and rivers of radioactive and toxic waste, populated by cyborg-zombie beings 'lovingly' called H-, former transhumans whose implants and mods went haywire.> 'Ruled' over by a tyrant couple, the two are the only beings capable of rational thinking left. They accidentally caused the death of the world (by creating an AI that turned into a virus which made the former citizens into the H-), the two are too stuck in the past to even try looking at the future.
>>61579440Oh that'd be cool, pre-apocalyptic

> Name: [ ██████ ]> [ ██████ ] is a 'parasite' or 'copycat' dimension, taking the form of any other dimension in the universe. However, it is deeply malevolent and will viciously attack any intruders. Whenever an outside enters, it will first attempt to take the shape of a dimension most suited for the visitor, lying in wait until he lets his guard down. Upon that happening, it fully changes itself into a hostile world, and will further amplify and direct all hostility towards said intruder. >Nobody knows how [ ██████ ] looks in the absence of an intruder, and it is argued whether it keeps to a random form or is just pure chaotic void>It is certain the entire [ ██████ ] is at least vaguely self aware enough to instinctively 'defend' itself. It is feared it actually possesses intelligence.

The plane appears identical to the "main" plane of the party, but the visible light is skewed to turn the landscape from what could be considered a Picasso painting into what the party sees, resulting in the party being grossly inefficient when attempting to interact with the plane, including something as simple as walking from point A to B. Closing your eyes and feeling your way through the plane is seen as the "safest" means for Outworlders to maneuver in the plane.
>>61587197You're just as shitty as I expected from a Rick&Morty poster.
As the portal leading to the Dimension opens, a horde of ten foot long centipede-like creatures come pouring out (3+1d6 plus 2d3 every 10 rounds) attacking everything in it's path. Whenever they encounter any wounded creatures, including themselves, they must test Will with a DC of 10+damage dealt to the wounded. If failed, the wounded is recognized as a source of meat, and the creatures must focus all attacks on the wounded until it is devoured and killed. Should the party fight their way past the horde and into the plane, they will find themselves in a series of tunnels, burrowed through the bleeding remains of reality with pieces of carapace and rotting meat strewn about and the sounds of chittering claws growing stronger.Welcome to the Sinful Plane of Gluttony.
Gorillas in powered armor (Kittani) are busy conquering this Buck Rogers-style planetary theocracy whose small sun god has descended on the planet to wage war against the invading aliens. The Kittani aliens are minions of even more powerful tentacled beings called the Splugorth.
>A monochromatic black-and-white world in which everything aligns to one of two opposites: personalities, factions, races, tech-vs-magic, everything. This world has been leached of most emotions, passions, innovation and magic and those things are only 10% effective. Some fade away in days.
>>61576698The dogscape.Everything is made of dog.
>Everything entering this dimension is fractured like a mirror into 1d4 shards each having only 1d10x10% of the originals quality/power/level/whatever and scattered 1d6 miles away. Traversing the mirrored landscapes of this realm to reunite with your shards will take some time but the image-less Vampirettes can assist you for a price. >All the animals and plants are electromechanical, “consuming” each other for parts, while the humanoids are primitive organic savages transplanted from some other world. Mecha-dinosaurs roam the forests while herds of rubber-gasket bovines & spring-loaded antelopes roam the plains. Their brains are complex electronics. The organics use holographics and emp-grenades (which they harvest from magnetic trees) to survive.
>>61588372>Necropolon>A dark dimension where all the suns have been put out by a networked vampire hivemind that raises up immense armies of vampiric spawn to swallow all life and turn it to darkness. Hundreds of millions of remaining humanoids are kept as slave stock and food supply, though that is dwindling rapidly, while conscience-less AI computers attempt to capture enough energy to sustain their fanged masters.

>>61588372>Planets completely covered in small and giant eyeballs, some embedded in the gelatinous surface, some on stalks and some floating around by magic. These eyeballs are sentient, huge magic batteries. They are often raided by other alien races for their magic resources. The Zembahk - a race of smart, wise and friendly one-eyed worms - also live here and try to avoid visitors. Everything is covered in an ocean of gloop.
A plane where you swap bodies (and stats) with others in the party could be cool. Something where The Half-Orc is now weaker than the Gnome despite stile having all the muscle appearance wise.
>>61576698>A world where all sentient life inhabits ocean bound floating city's due to a massive infestation of burrowing super predators making land life impossible.
Everything on this plane is made of small, reconfigurable blocks. Blocks and inorganic matter can be rearranged with the right tools but organic blocks require minor magic. Everything has a jagged or fluffy appearance.
Huge Everglades with 100-foot-tall grasses the gown with various shimmering lights, producing random magical effects when anything touches them, occasionally creating a cascade of magic eruptions like forest fires. Small communities of kangaroo-like kingdoms live in magic-immune shells and swim underwater to hunt for orange eels.
>>61593775^that glow with various...
Hot steppes with scattered mile-high termite mound cities made of muddy secretions and mica, built by many races of slave insects controlled by a race of dragons who can emit various control chemicals and who travel to other dimensions to sell slaves in exchange for tchnological items.
Stretches of deserts made out of black, pulsating glass. Every ~100 km or so, a visible fissure is seen emitting blinding light from below. The core of this planet is actually a miniature sun.
>Western saloons, cattle ranches and indian tribes dot an alien landscape of reddish-purple plants and blue rocks. Geometric landscapes rather than the fractal ones we have: cubic mountains, hexagonal deserts, triangular mesh leaves, cylindrical tree trunks, spherical lakes, tetragonal slabs of grasslands, etc. The inhabitants are pretty normal fantasy civilizations but much better at math and navigation.

>Three suns transform this world every 8 hours: the Green Sun grows life and regenerates, the Red Sun causes transformation and mutation, and the White Sun causes decay, death and disintegration. The entire "planet" is actually the back of a giant snail's shell, moving through a vast universe of greenery. Colonies of termite-people and their aphid livestock live in caverns and tunnels burrowed into the shell. Rivers of mucus run throughout.
Double Hell>I'll let you figure out the specifics of this one
>>61608135That pic is quite funny. Are there other ones for other countries?
A world in which every single being has another double that expresses everything they are thinking out loud and they follow them everywhere and if they are killed the being they are tied to dies. Some can mute theirs by getting a operation upon their double but it forces the being to feeling the emotions upon such a intense level they are almost controllable.
Computerized world where everything natural has a panel that makes it reprogrammable. Tree colors can be set, river size and depth reconfigured, even the weather can be configured... but you need access keys or great hacking skills. The inhabitants are nanomachine humans who have re-created the civilization that created them before it was destroyed in a terrible war. They pretend to be this civ as a tribute to their creators and perhaps to fulfill some other hidden directive.
Modern world but dinosaurs survived throughout history and some were domesticated.
