Why do the snake people always get such a bad reputation? They're smart, they have one of the less retarded anatomies among the half-human races, and you'd think that could integrate with society pretty well. But no. There'll be a million good drow, ten thousand good orcs, and a hundred good fiends in a setting before a good snake.

Turtles have extraordinary anaerobic capacity--they have survived up to 33 hours in a pure nitrogen atmosphere. (Most reptiles have a high anaerobic capacity compared to mammals, but even they can't survive much more than 30 minutes without oxygen.) Although basically air-breathing, many aquatic species have developed ways to pick up oxygen even when submerged. Of these the most remarkable, which some turtles share with dragonfly nymphs, sea cucumbers, and certain televangelists, is the ability to breathe through one's butt. You've heard the expression 'Blow it out your after regions?' It's no mere figure of speech. Many species have a pair of sacs (bursae) opening off the cloaca (combined digestive and urogenital chamber). These are heavily vascularized to facilitate the uptake of oxygen
    >> Anonymous 06/27/09(Sat)20:55 No.5022140
The champion in this regard seems to be the recently discovered (1973) Fitzroy River turtle Rheodytes leukops ('white-eyed stream-diver'), which is confined to its namesake river in Queensland, Australia. It lives in shallow rapids where the water is highly oxygenated. One can detect the keen sense of discovery in the account by the scientists who found it, John Legler and John Cann: 'One of our vivid early impressions of Rheodytes was that adults of both sexes swam with a widely gaping cloacal orifice (up to 30mm in diameter). The orifice remains open when individuals are out of the water. We first became aware of the large cloacal bursae when a female was examined in bright sunlight; the carapace transmitted enough light to illuminate the coelomic cavity and produce a spectacular view internally for at least 100mm, via the cloaca, revealing a large sac lined with vascular, villose mucosa. . . . Water is pumped in and out of the bursae of captives and experimental animals at rates of 15 to 60 times per minute' (Legler and Cann 1980). Only dedicated herpetologists could characterize the vista up a turtle's gaping bunghole as a 'spectacular view.' But you can understand their enthusiasm--since the turtle's shell is only 260 millimeters long, a 100-millimeter-long bursa is relatively enormous. Up to 68 percent of the turtle's oxygen uptake is accomplished through the cloacal bursae, so it rarely needs to come to the surface to bask or breathe.

As it was, the DM liked the idea (a lot more interesting use for "a hatch of lamia eggs" than the SELL FOR GPS he had originally intended), so he was willing to let me pretty much make up rules on the issue. Don't remember all the details, but basically, since I wanted her to be a sorcerer at the end of the process anyway we used mentorship to mechanically represent the relationship and I did opposing will checks for the bratty child bit.

You could always just play as a non-evil Lamia. I mean, it's a monster race, but it has a listed level adjustment so it's apparently considered viable.
    >> Anonymous 06/27/09(Sat)21:33 No.5022458

    That's a good example of a naga.

Snake tastes like chicken and human tastes like pork, so a chickenpig.

    LA 4 isn't exactly "viable".

So lets make a race then. One without a level adjustment.

first thing that pops into my head is that it would have a movement speed of 20' per round.
    >> Anonymous 06/27/09(Sat)21:39 No.5022506
Isn't that pretty fast? More like it should get some kind of strike ability that lets it move a square or two as it strikes.

Because people see snakes and get freaked out, much as with spiders. Both are very useful, so nagas and spider-girls are both welcome additions to the fantasy bestiary.

4 squares per round or 20 feet. I know jack all about 4th e, but I don't see why we can't stat it out for both editions while we're here.

20 feet is pretty slow for a medium sized creature. but I can see where it would be pretty good to add a racial ability "Gains spring attack as a bonus feat"

In one of my earlier campaigns, my party encountered a yuan-ti who had left her people because of a love of music. It seemed to fit, what with the whole Arabic snake charmer thing.

She had been doing well for herself, and she wanted a new house slave to serve guests at her dinner parties.

Her new servant did very well, and the two developed an amiable relationship. In time, she even helped him get a flute, and that's when she realized that music was her favorite thing in life.

Dramatic bad things happened--another yuan-ti almost killed her slave, she got mad, others got suspicious, priests started divining, and she and her slave fled. The slave died during the escape, but she continued to their destination--a major human city where the slave had promised that music was always available.

That's when the party got involved.

I imagine that's because they can't wash themselves and they live in the dirt.

problem: Snakes move by undulating their bodies. They pretty much need their belly-plates to be in contact with the ground and able to produce friction. Unless the armour simulates them and is very well anchored (snakes can bruise easily if squeezed very tightly) they'll be ridiculously unwieldy and slow.

Hmm... socially-integrable Lamia race? Well the obvious bits would be

    +2 WIS, +2 CHA, -2 CON
    Humanoid (Reptilian)
    Base land speed 20 ft.
Natural reach 10 ft. (to model striking but slow "walking" movement)
+1 caster level for enchantment and illusion spells.

...but there are so many different "snakey" abilities that you could give that I'm kind of stumped on what to do for the rest of it. You could really go for an elf-type thing here, I suppose, with a choice between Viper, Constrictor, and King clan Lamia.

Vipers would get poison fangs and darkvision. Constrictors would be large, have Constrict (duh), and switch the stat dock to -2 DEX. King would have immunity to poison and a little damage reduction.

If they count as Martial Weapons...

If they've got Reach anyway, add a stippend that it only counts against one creature each round. Add a feat that can be taken later if you want, but having Reach is a bit too powerful for a non-LA creature. Especially if you're giving them darkvision and whatnot.

    >> a not so eloquen/t g/entelmen from /k/ 06/28/09(Sun)01:08 No.5024342
yes but think of it this way,

can humans propel themselves horizontally along a surface and through small holes and narrow tunnels.

also I cant imagine a being that can move sinuously along a surface like a snake using say, a greatspear, halberd, or longsword
    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)01:09 No.5024348

Viper Lamia Paladins would fall due to using their natural weapons. This is awesome.

Looks pretty good though. As far as LA goes, having a race that's inherently customizable like that is a bit odd, but none of the different options look like they'd be substantially better than the main races.

    What's their favored class though?

yeah we can we just don't move efficiently in that manner and neither would a snakeman because of it's human torso

    >through small holes and narrow tunnels
We can do that too again with reduced efficiency as would a snakeman. Also just because you can fit in a small hole doesn't mean all your architecture will be based around crawlspaces.

    >I cant imagine a being that can move sinuously along a surface like a snake using say
Just because you think of the idea of snakemen using snake like weapons is cool doesn't mean it's the most logical weapon for them to use bio-mechanically. Especially if they live in confined areas as you imagine them too.

Favored Class: Cleric? They're naturally religious? After all, there's all kinds of snake cults around the countryside.

Favored Class: Rogue? People distrust them because they're snaky, steal for obvious 'we can't buy from them, so might as well' psychology, enter circular arguement.

Fighter doesn't make sense to me, and there's a lot in that group anyway. Barbarians are also out.

Wizards? Kinda. Possibly the local hobby is to research their old glory?
Sorcerer? Lot of sibilants, so likely?
    Druid? Don't see why not.
Ranger? Sure! Reach'll come in handy with two-weapons.

About that, just give them the stat bonuses and Reach, maybe limited darkvision, or a close-range tremorsense (10 ft?). We shouldn't make up 'Lesser Reach: Only applies to one attack'. Just Reach with weapons that no longer have it.

if a snake body can move more efficiently through this kind of structure wouldn't it be logical to make fortifications and shelters based around this concept?

    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)01:31 No.5024523
Lamias have more waist-level mobility than humanoids would have. If you think about it, their torsos can kind of move independantly from the snake part (bob around and such) which humans can't do. Much like you see an actual snake's head bob and move around, yet the rest of the body stays where it is on the ground. I'd figure this would make thrusting weapons more useful (like a sword) as they could stab, then back their bodies away and attack again from another angle, without actually moving.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)01:34 No.5024547
cleric and spellcasters make sense with their natural wis/int bonus, though i'd lean towards cleric cause i like the snake cult thing

rogue i dunno about. seems like it would be difficult for something as huge and slow as lamia to sneak around. though there could be awesome instances of them launching out of dark corners, two daggers in hand, plunging them into their enemies like fangs.

actually, assassin would be a suitable replacement for rogue.

and they seem like they'd be rather adept fighters with their innate physical power. maybe a fighter based racial prestige class could be made
    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)01:34 No.5024550
Do they really need a favored class? With the con/dex option these guys can pretty much fit anything by picking the right clan, and not having a favored class would be a mild disadvantage to counteract the fact that they seem to be slightly above average for a race.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)01:36 No.5024567
Thing is though I don't think they WOULD move more efficiently through those type of structures. A snake might sure but we're talking about a creature that is an amalgam of snake and human. That human torso would only serve to throw off it's balance or at least make movement more strenuous and awkward when not held in an upright posture.

oh dear I hadn't thought of that

(promptly disappears in a puff of logic)

but this can be achieved by a shortsword or dagger. a longsword is heavier and harder to line up for additional attacks the
    smaller=lighter (very often)
    lighter=faster (sometimes)
    faster=better attack, parry, and riposte

that and now the sight of a ducking, weaving, and lunging lamia holding a slim dirk(fang motif optional) stabbing violently. being in many places and the same place at once

Lamia characters would be ok in a lolcampaign or in the hands of a very skilled dm but generally speaking you can't put that much exoticism into the hands of a player without it leading to a mary sue wankfest. They're just too cool and too unique.

Well, yeah on the locomotion part, though I can't see how that would come up in game.

Reproduction and excretion would depend on where the snake part begins. Most lamia pictures you see here they still have human genital areas, and same in the back end.

    >jump check? impossible.

    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)02:09 No.5024848

Real snakes can get airborne by contracting and then flinging themselves, Lamias could do the same. I mean, it's not like humans can realistically jump more than about 15 feet anyway, and a Lamia's already got most of that distance covered just by reaching out. Anything beyond that goes in the "lol we have superhuman stats" category. Climbing could be a pain in the ass depending on the surface, but that would mostly just be on the DM to adjust your climb checks. Totally workable.

maybe, but snakes aren't really designed for such movement. i'm not sure their anatomy would let them build up enough energy to significantly propel themselves off the ground.

    >There are snakes that can climb trees, so I wouldn't put it past them.

Climb, oh fuck yes they can.
Jump, not like a spring. Low lunges are fine, but not really leaping. Of course, combining a lunge and natural length leads to crossing gaps humans have trouble jumping.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)02:12 No.5024870
Snakes generally cannot jump. they can, however climb. This is because their ribs are flexible - in addition to the usual side winding momentary touching systels of locomotion they usually use, they can actually use their ribs to 'crawl' which is how thye move in burrows and the like. this is also the technique which l;ets them 'grab' and 'drape' themselves over rough barked trees.

LOTS of snakes climb, especially mambas, pythons (not so much anacondas), and vine snakes.

Well, I've seen others that do show what I explain, so its kind of moot. Different settings would have Lamias be different.

    >maybe, but snakes aren't really designed for such movement. i'm not sure their anatomy would let them build up enough energy to significantly propel themselves off the ground.
Other anon's state that snakes can kind of jump. If you think about it, it wouldn't matter much. Humans can't jump very far, and I'd figure a spring-like jump or however would get close enough (anything life threatening like over a chasm I wouldn't want to risk as a human anyway), and if the jump was vertical, they could just push themselves up by lifting themselves up with the rest of their... tail... body.. whatever the term for it is. This way they could probably get more height than humans that can jump well.

    >a wall would be an insurmountable obstacle
Yeah walls would be hard to climb. How often does wall climbing come up in these games? I've never had to do it, and any good group could probably come up with a solution.

    >i guess you could get by it if you don't really do physically demanding adventuring

Something interesting I've noticed is that centaurs are usually depicted with horse genitalia in classical art so they should in theory be sexually compatible with equines. What if a centaur x horse pairing were to produce a feral, beastman type centaur, like a mule?

Centaurs traditionally represented the struggle between barbarism and civilization and they were very wild and hedonistic. Having them sink to such levels of bestial depravity wouldn't be unfitting and it could make for an interesting social dynamic within their culture if the dm handles it well.

For the sake of simplicity, we're going to say that they can do pullups. After all, STR is assumed to be the same all over unless you have an actual disability in one limb.

As for a biological justification, Lamias, like snakes, are basically nothing but muscle. They have fragile bones (hence low CON), but they're so damned toned that they can pull themselves up if they can get a grip.

No it isn't. Being from a weird race is special, sure, but it needn't be any more special than what's necessary to make someone into a hero in the first palce.

Hell, the Lamia character I've played (mentioned WAY earlier in the thread) was one of the more normal people in the group. Yes, she was from a monster race, but being an intelligent magical beast sorcerer is arguably less "special" than being a mutant human sorcerer in the first place, and between that, not having the "MY PARENTS ARE DEAAAAAD" backstory, and being mentally and emotionally well adjusted, we're already well below average on the attention whore scale.

From the waist down, this attractive woman has the body of a giant snake. She keeps a weapon ready, but seems intrigued rather than hostile as she grins and runs a forked tongue over her lips.

Lamias are a race of mysterious humanoids with the upper body of a human woman and the lower body of a snake. They make their homes around the edges of desert oases, where they form small villages. While the Lamia are generally peaceful, they will fiercely and jealously defend their homes if threatened, and are feared and respected in the desert lands for their raw physical power as well as their surprisingly keen intellect and benevolent manner. Lamias are, on average, about 15 feet in length, and weigh about 600 pounds.

A lamia who perceives a possible threat will likely either report what she has witnessed to her allies or approach the interloper and question it to determine its purpose. While they prefer to fight on their own terms, lamias forced into a battle will try to end things as quickly as possible, either putting her strength and size to use in battering her foes or simply retreating until she can form a strategy.
Alternate Form: A lamia can, as a full-round action, transform her serpentine tail into human legs, as if using the spell polymorph self. This changes her size category to medium, reducing her space/reach to 5 ft./5 ft.
Constrict: A lamia can deal 1d6+2 points of damage with every successful grapple check against medium or smaller creatures. She may choose to deal either lethal or nonlethal damage without a penalty to her grapple check.
Improved Grab: A lamia that hits with her slam attack may start a grapple against a creature of medium size or smaller as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If her attempt is successful, she can constrict. No initial touch attack is required.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)05:43 No.5026772

    Lamia Society
Lamias live off the land surrounding their villages, harvesting the fruits and nuts of the oasis they live beside, occasionally hunting to supplement their diet as the need arises. Lamia villages also give shelter to travelers crossing the desert, trading with those who bring goods from the outside world. An interesting fact to note is that the lamia race is composed entirely of women—they breed exclusively with men from outside their species. Whoever a lamia chooses as her partner is considered wedded to her unless the man in question leaves her company immediately after mating. While definitely surprising to most travelers who find themselves in these circumstances, those men who accept the union most often live happy lives, as Lamias are intelligent, beautiful, and good-natured brides.
Lamia children are always lamia themselves, although on certain occasions these children are born in human form—how this is interpreted varies depending on the disposition of the parents and the village as a whole.

    Lamia Characters
Lamia are very rarely seen outside their villages, and almost never seen outside the desert, but a few lamia have been known to follow their husbands out of their villages, occasionally as far as to other continents. Alternatively, some young lamias simply leave their villages for short trips outside of their villages to gain more knowledge about the outside world.
A lamia’s favored class is cleric, with access to the following domains: Animal, Good, Law and Sun (Favored Weapon: Shortbow). Despite their honest, open ways of dealing with peaceful outsiders, the name of the Lamia patron deity has never been revealed to any non-Lamia.

    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)06:04 No.5026910

Oh what the hell, I'll post it here.

Since people brought up the whole diplomacy and racial tensions thing in the discussion, I decided to put them in a (to my knowledge unique) social position in the 'verse: nobody likes the race, because they have a talent for manipulation and mind control, but individual Lamia don't really have to deal with prejudice because, well, they have a talent for manipulation and mind control. Basically, everyone thinks "Snakes? Bunch of damned scheming bastards I wouldn't trust further than I could throw. Amy, though, she's a good one."

Of all the humanoids, the carnivorous, snake-tailed Lamia most blur the boundary separating the civilized races from the intelligent monsters. They are as a whole mistrusted, and no other race or government is officially on good terms with the Lamia. Individually, however, Lamia are charming and easy to get along with, due to an almost magical ability to say the right thing at the right time, and it's a rare city that doesn't have a Lamia family or two counted among the respected members of the community.

Due to their dietary requirements, Lamia cannot live in large groups, so Lamia society is based around small nuclear families, with few Lamia villages or towns. This has given the Lamia a highly individualistic culture, with few notable tendencies in behaviour or attributes. Many rancher Lamia can be found in the countryside, while others choose to be hunters in forests. When living in the cities, Lamia often work as merchants, with more ambitious members of the race often taking civil service or clergy positions, in which they rise quickly. Finally, a few Lamia apply their talents working as diplomats between nations, or even to the savage races and intelligent monsters.

    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)06:07 No.5026941

The history of the Lamia is mostly unknown, for while Lamia love to share and embellish tales of their own ancestors, few care to remember the tales told by others. The two leading theories supported by scholars are that the Lamia are either relatives of the Yuan-Ti or a recent evolution of the monstrous Feral Lamia (i.e. the one in the monster manual), though a minority point to their inherent magical abilities as evidence that they are the result of experiments in cross-breeding humans and magical beasts to create a reliable sorcerous bloodline.

Stat adjustments: +2 WIS, +2 CHA, -2 CON (Some say that their forked tongues can taste the emotions of others in the air. Others believe they can read the minds of those that look into their eyes. Whatever the reason, Lamia have always possessed great insight and cunning, particularly when it comes to interacting with other people. They are, however, less sturdy than they appear, due to having fine bones.)
    Type: Humanoid (Reptilian)
    Size: Medium
    Base land speed: 20 ft.
Natural reach: 10 ft. (Their slithering gait makes Lamia appear to move ponderously most of the time, but when in combat, they extend their bodies with frightening swiftness to strike at incautious enemies)
Racial bonus: +1 caster level to enchantment and illusion spells, and the psionic equivalent. (A Lamia's natural talent at persuasion gives it one additional effective caster level when using spells and powers which change the perceptions or minds of others.)

    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)06:08 No.5026943
Just as an aside; snakes are all predatory carnivores. Selling them as a race of farmers just...doesn't really seem right to me.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)06:08 No.5026948

Weapon familiarity: The Whip, Spiked Chain, Dire Flail, and similar exotic flexible reach weapons are considered martial for a Lamia. (The manipulation of long flexible tools comes naturally to the Lamia due to their body shapes, so any Lamia with substantial weapons training will be able to use them with ease.)
Armor: Due to their unusual lower bodies, Lamia requiring special construction for their armor. Lamia who wish to wear medium or heavy armor must pay the non-humanoid price for it.
Alignment: Any. Slight leaning towards neutrality, if you can call it that.
Favored class: None. Lamia take experience penalties for any multi-classing they do. (Due to their loose social structure, the Lamia have never developed a strong affinity for one class over another. Unlike humans, however, individual Lamia are not usually jacks of all trades.)
    LA: 0, hopefully.

You'll notice I incorporated that aspect in mine, as the guiding force behind their culture no less.
    >> Anonymous 06/28/09(Sun)06:12 No.5026971

The Lamia race is made up of several variant strains with unique physical characteristics. At character creation, a Lamia selects one of the following as a bonus feat:

Viper clan: Viper Lamia possess retractable fangs, granting them a 1d4 bite attack as a natural weapon. They may also choose to make a bite poisonous 3 times per day, at DC 10 + CON modifier, or inject all of their remaining poison for the day to add 2 to the DC for each additional dose. (Declaring a bite poisonous is made after the bite connects, as in actual snakes.) Additionally, the Vipers have a pit in the center of their foreheads which functions as a "third eye", giving them heat-based darkvision out for 30 ft.

Constrictor clan: Constrictor Lamia tower over their brethren from the other clans, often growing to 15 feet in total length with a standing height of about 9 feet, placing them in size category large. In order to support the increased weight, their skeletons are more durable but less flexible than those of other Lamia, giving them -2 DEX rather than -2 CON. Constrictors earned their name from the powerful crushing technique they can use while grappling, Constrict.

King clan: King Lamia are so named for their durable physiology, which seems optimized to help them survive combat with other Lamia. They possess thickened scales and organs designed to function even when punctured or crushed, granting DR 3/slashing, and are highly resistant to poison, receiving +10 to those saves.
