You are the Red Throat Tribe.Undead ghouls animated by the sentient bacteria calling itself the Red Rot. Once enslaved to a necromancer you have broken free to create a new home for yourselves deep in the dark catacombs under the bustling metropolis of Meldric. You are not alone down in the Dark. You have made powerful enemies and close friends with the denizens of the undergrounds. The monstrous and the mutated look to your Tribe and the leadership of Chieftain Jaw for protection and guidance, the radiant light of your power guiding and shielding them from the horrors and cruelty that surround them.Centered around your tribe an alliance of the various tribes and groups that struggle to survive. Mobile and sentient fungal creatures your closest allies, the first of your friends upon your Enlightenment, fight and die and farm alongside you. An ever growing family of Crocodilian mutants follow your example, protecting the weak with their fearsome might. An ancient and alien intelligence finds itself growing more attached to those it helps to protect at your urging. A family and village of hidden mutants, nearly broken by your own but healing and regaining strength, opens its arms to the refugees and discarded from the surface. A bizarre undead tutors and guides your siblings in profane arts, their cruel rituals turned to the betterment and protection of the Tribes.Yet you have made many enemies as well. Surfacers fear and suspect you of atrocities or hunt and terrorize you and your allies. Monstrous creatures hunt and prey on the weak, mutants and undead stalking the tunnels in their eternal hunger. Alien minds, ancient and malevolent, twist and warp the dreams and bodies of the weak-willed into their pawns to spread chaos and fear. In many ways the Tribes acting as a buffer to protect the surface world from the horrors of the Dark. You are the Red Throat Ghouls and the City above fears you. Time will tell if that fear is unfounded or rightfully deserved.

There are many enemies that would love to do the tribe harm but the tribe does have friends to help it in it's times of need.Previously, Jaw traveled to the Reservoir to visit Talon and Grubbilechs family. Introduced to the newest Enlightened, a ghoul by the name of Toad gifted with fleshgrafted gills, and has come to visit the main hub of the Tribe.Unity brought reports of the movements of their enemies, Skum and Roaches exploring the tunnels more boldly in distant areas.Fist paid a visit to Echo and Darts small campsite in the basement of an abandoned mansion near the borders of Meldrics territory. Located in a rather quiet corner of the Royal District the mansion offered a bounty of raw supplies and another link to the surface world.Jaw paid a visit to one of the larger independent Goblin tribes and managed to talk her way into meeting with their leader Chief Loor. Satisfied with the bribe of food and alcohol Chief Loor, while plainly suspicious of the ghouls, agreed to send word to the new leader of the goblin tribes, Big Chief Gyr

Instead he greeted their newest Enlightened brother Toad to the family. The pair go to speak with Bone about getting the amphibious ghoul a set of his own personal weapons and armor. The Tribe pauses as the screaming resumed from the lab, once normal voices going ragged and bestial. Dust emerges briefly to assure the tribe all was well even as she escorted a pair of hobgoblin Sentinels carrying heavy lengths of chain into the room before sealing the door. Soon the screams were little more than background noise to the ghouls though the Murkhounds depart from their den out into the tunnels with annoyed clicks of their mandibles.Unity approaches Jaw with its daily report and says all is much like it had been. There were new tunnels that flooded with the increasing rains above as the hurricane season loomed nearer. Skum patrols were lessened but still present, fleeing the moment the sensed the Unity watching them. The Roaches and their murkhound slaves disappeared once more into the myriad of tunnels they had been boring through the earth, enslaved centipedes guarding the entrances. There is much to be done and tend to.Pick two actions>Investigate Skum patrols>Scout Roach tunnels>Diplomacy/Visit (Who?)>Other

>>47915565Above the sound of rain fills the brewery as it beats against the roof and windows, a pair of goblin ferals hidden in the attic peering out over the dreary city as gray clouds rained down on it. The bell above the main door chimes as Fear steps in and hangs his hat and coat wet from the light rain that seemed to grow harder at his arrival. Claw looks up from the open book he was looking over with Irnak, the orc's reading skill with the written language of Meldric still rusty. She smiles at Fear, "Welcome back, Fear. The folks for the other shipments came and went, payment is in the safe. The Rosy Pig Tavern even brought us a whole smoked hog, Gorgrenka's carving it up in the back now. I can get you a plate if you're wanting."Claw nods, an empty plate with a marrow drained bone sitting on the table nearby, "It's good, you should try."Fear nods and manages the smallest of smiles that seems almost unnatural on his face, "Thank you, Irnak. That sounds good," she nods with her cheerful smile, twisted with the deep scar that crossed her cheek and chin and takes the book, an advanced textbook on metallurgy practices, before disappearing into the back.Sitting back down Claw picks up the bone to gnaw on it absent-mindedly, "Y'know, I hardly understood a word of that book but she got it well enough. Felt she should be giving me lessons," he tosses the chewed bone away, "So how'd the meeting go?"Fear reaches into a hidden pocket of his murkhound armor to pull out an official looking envelop stamped with the emblem of the Lord-Govenors office, "Not so much a meeting as scheduling one. We meet him two days from now, the earliest his scribe could work the meeting in. Would've been next month if his personal Guard-Captain hadn't been passing through and recognized me from the lobby," Fear chuckles dryly, "She was a great help in expressing the urgency of my request."Claw snorts a laugh as Irnak returns with Fears plate, "Yeah I'm sure she was."

The crocodilian queen held no love for the Aboleths mutations, old conflicts with them and attempts to capture and mutate her encouraging her ire. Talon was ready to gather some of her gilled ferals to scout them out when Grubbilech stops her, saying that her children will help.Amphibious ghouls and crocodilians swim through the passages of the rivers and sewers as they dove deeper to where the Unity had spotted them. The search is tedious but the undead and mutants were determined in their task, spheres of black slime rolling after them on the shores, walls or ceilings to keep them all in contact. The Ghouls and Grubbilech's Family hunt
>>47916762As Fang prepared a patrol of goblins with their murkhounds staying behind Bug approaches Jaw, requesting that he join the goblin in the search for the Roaches. Claiming he could be an asset in tracking down the Roaches his stubby antennae twitch, either with nervousness or excitement, Jaw couldn't tell which. She frowns, knowing how badly he'd been hurt the last time he'd encountered the insectoids and finally decides that no, this was only a scouting operation and Fang could handle it on his own. Clicking his mandibles in disappointment Bug returns to work in the fungal farm, the collection of black insect legs clutching a chunk of faintly glowing amber twisting in his grasp.Fang leads his goblins into the dark tunnels, armed with sporegrenades, fang shuriken and jars of slime. Followed by a cluster of floating Unity eyes they make their way to the Industrial Districts tunnels where they had been spotted. It didn't take long for Fang and his goblins to find the freshly dug entrances to the Roaches warrens, the scent of insectoid life thick in the air. Centipedes, dripping slime and venom, guard each entrance, the larger burrows protected by pairs of enslaved Umber Hulks hiding within. Bones and the torn remains of prey both animal and goblin litter the areas. It seemed that even the monstrous mutants, misshapen and dangerous, avoided these new inhabitants.Fang uses Unity to map out a good number of the burrow entrances throughout the tunnels, the goblin coming to suspect that most, if not all of them, were connected by a twisting labyrinth of narrow earthen tunnels. They had spotted none of the Roaches until hours later when the Unity alerts them to movement ahead. What shall Fang do?>Ambush>Hide and observe>Flee>Other

>>47917000Hiding among the pipes and crevasses of the ceilings Fang watches as a large group pass underneath. Five roaches rode on a mix of umber hulks, murkhounds and centipedes. Clutched in the knuckle walking grasp of several of the large umber hulks were the battered and savaged corpses, plainly decayed. On the back of one umber hulk Fang saw a Roach riding it chewing at the dried flesh of another corpse mangled and missing most of itself. The goblin was startled to see the corpse suddenly twitch, stump of its remaining arm thumping as the zombie tried to flail, its tongue lolling from its dislocated jaw. The Roach hisses, wings fluttering as it reared back a sickle-lick claw and rammed it into an empty eye-socket. The undead twitches then goes still once more as the insect returns to its grisly meal.Fang "looked" at the others, his echolocation washing over them and he realizes that the Roaches were returning from battle. Every umber hulk and several of the murkhounds and centipedes sported fresh wounds as their riders feasted on their prizes.
>>47917000>Hide and observeGotta be careful w these roaches.
>>47917114<They are speaking about the success of their hunt.>Fang nearly falls off the pipe he was balancing on as the last of the murkhounds pass underneath them. >>47917205Can we do both? Have one Unity eye float after them and keep watch from the ceiling, and the rest search for this vault.I'm guessing the eye should be able to track them decently well, but I'd say that's a less pressing issue than>Search for the source of undead
>>47917368Agreed, leave like 5 goblins w the unity eye to track 'em and then go back the way the Roaches came from to meet up with our distant cousins.
>>47917205After the insectoids pass far enough Fang hisses out to the Unity in a whispered voice his plan. Several of the floating Unity eyes part from the ghouls, following after them to track them to their main burrow if they could. Eyes that could dissolve into a small patch of slime would be much easier to hide than the goblin ghouls could.Instead Fang leads his goblins to track down the source of these undead. >>47917638While the trail was easy enough to follow at first it quickly became tangled in the myriad of chemical run-off that was abundant in the Industrial tunnels. Goblins sniff and send out pings of echolocation, the shuffling forms of mutants spotted in the distance but they are given a wide berth or allowed to pass by unhindered to retain their stealth. Almost ready to give up Fang spots a severed, rotted hand grasped in the mouth of a giant rat with too many feet and tails darting down a tunnel.Eventually it was the sound of hungry feasting that drew the attention of a goblin feral and finally they locate what must have been the source of Roaches harvest. A brick wall that had been battered and torn apart had corpses both undead and insectoid littered through the tunnel. Several umber hulk bodies lay scattered about with a handful of murkhounds and the remains of a centipede. Zombies torn to pieces were tossed about the tunnel with reckless abandon, their rotten bodies pulped by the strength of the umber hulks.Scavengers were already feasting on the gore, giant rats and several creatures Fang had never seen before, scatter before them as the goblins dropped down to investigate. Having a goblin harvest what it could from the dead murkhounds he leads his other ferals to the broken wall. Inside was much like out, the room a nondescript box. Searching the room and corpses with ferals Fang began to count the undead until he lost count nearing seventy with more of the undead too torn apart to make sure if they were one or many individuals. The zombies had worn old, cheap armor, mostly leather or chain that was cracked and rusty, each seemingly armed with a wooden shield and shortsword or hand axe. The skin on their foreheads, of the skulls that still remained intact, were stripped of flesh with inscriptions in a foreign language chiseled into the bone.

While the Insectoids had destroyed the horde of zombies within they had been overheard saying that it was only one of many. Bug, his nervous stutter returning with the news of the Roaches increased might, put forth that was perhaps why the Roaches had ignored the Tribe, "M-more tem-temptinng prey."The Unity reports that it had tracked the Roaches to a series of large burrow entrances on a lower level closer to the natural tunnels that the umber hulks were native to. Murkhound patrols had detected the slimes who were forced to hide as reinforcements from oozing centipedes arrived. The hidden Unity slime had to return to recuperate but said it believes it knows where large nest of them reside. They spoke of large amounts of centipedes, umber hulks, packs of murkhounds and even new deadly creatures from the darkest caves.Above the rains grow more constant, the dirt roads turning to thick mud and the cobblestone turning slick and greasy. Claw and Gorgrenka spoke with a shellfish trapper on their trip to the Market District who said the hurricanes were coming soon, that he could tell it would be a strong one with how his bones ached.Talon reports that they've tracked down several skum groups, managing to ambush several already. The Green Children adding new notches to the handles of their ghoul-forged axes.Echo sends a message saying that the mansion was leaking from the rains but they could hear another bout of screaming at night from the neighboring home.
>>47933952Patrols sent to the goblins areas reported that Chief Loor had left with as large number of goblins and his larger guards, a palanquin of scrap metal held aloft by a team of goblins which carried the Chief and the keg of mushroom beer he drank freely from.Sweetie remained in his little room, curled up in a pile of meat and bone with his skull resting on top. A large number of empty urns and stringers littered the room as he digested and seemed to enter a minor food coma, only clicking his bones sluggishly as Fist checked on him.The screaming of the infected ceased once more, Tatters and Dust were splashed in dried blood and gore when they joined tribe for the daily meal. When questioned they shrug and make noncommittal answers or outright change the subject as they ate grilled mushroom and eel skewers. They would only say that progress was being made and that they could only wait and see for the time being. Maybe we can somehow find one of these vaults, or better yet, make our own fake one and poison it. Do we know of any toxin or mutagen that is especially dangerous to the roaches? If we can get them to bring it back to their burrows as food we may be able to cause some kind of plague or at least sicken a good number of them ahead of either our attack, or the inevitable flooding. Then it would just be mop up after that.

>>47934692Deciding to heed Echo's message Jaw has Bone and Bug prepare themselves and a group of ferals to travel to the abandoned mansion before the storms prevented a thorough investigating. The Unity passes a message along to the Fungals and replies that the Sporemancer is preparing to meet them and is quite thankful for the offer.Jaw debated with herself to extend the invitation to the Snapped Anvil but stopped herself and scowled at the pack she helping a feral load with supplies. Mikal had been the botanist of the Clan, the cheerful terrapin the first of his brothers to openly trust the ghouls. The last time she'd seen him he had been restricted to a chair set on wheels his brother had crafted, his legs coated in heavy casts to heal, the tattooed reptile only waving with a faint smile when he noticed her. Shaking her head and pressing down the guilt she has the ghouls move out into the tunnels.Passing by the Fungals ever-expanding territory they collect the tall Sporemancer and his small group of Guards then making their way through the tunnels toward the Royal District. Goblin feral scouts allowing them to avoid where the occasional inhabitant of the sewers lurked and hid.The trip was uneventful to their relief and as the Sporemancer tapped out a conversation with Bug they were greeted by a chirp. Dart drops down from a dark hole in the ceiling, eyes glowing red in the dark as she grins at them, "'Bout time you arrived. Echo waas getting anxious."She guided them to the basement, puddles of water splashing at their steps as they entered. Echo hops up to greet her brother Bug with a hug around his neck then scrambling to perch on his hunched back, the pair quickly catching up from their time apart. There were a few short pleasantries but the Sporemancer drums out his eagerness, staff of twisting, living fungal growth rapping the wet stone floor.
>>47935119Bone says he will go inspect the mansion itself to see where the damage was greatest and to check the armory Fist spoke so highly of. Taking a few ferals with him he disappears upstairs.Echo volunteers to take Bug and the Sporemancer above to search grounds, especially the thickly overgrown greenhouse full of colorful plants and strong-smelling flowers. Leading them above the Sporemancer and Bug both pause in the doorless doorway to the back. A light rain drizzles down, hardly a mist of warm water, but they both stared at it in silent awe. Bug had been up to the Brewery but had never going outside and never seen the rain. Reaching out a clawed and warped hand his face twists into a mockery of smile as the water falls over it.The Sporemancer was flanked by the Guards that followed him, the Fungals the very first of their kind to see the surface in person and not through one of the patches of Sentryshrooms that had begun to sprout throughout Meldric. The gills under their caps rustle as they breathed the moist air in deeply and stood there silently for several minutes. Finally Echo, after letting them absorb the moment, gently goads them on and they step out into the rain for the first time. Grinning at their child-like behavior she guides them to the greenhouse, broken glass crunching under their feet.Roll me 1d100 best of first three please.(sorry about the delay)

>>47935134As the trio head into the Greenhouse to begin taking samples and exploring the thick plant-life. Nearby was an artificial pond that had grown wild and green, full of chirping and croaking frogs that dive into the water when they pass. A goblin perches at the waters edge, watching with wide murky eyes the colorful fish that swam under the layer of algae and floating plants. The greenhouse had been quite large, with rows of raised planters hosting a variety of likely exotic plants. Green tendrils wrap around stems and the rusted framework of the greenhouse walls, broken glass littering the floor with the dead leaves. A single large tree sits at the center of the greenhouse, its crown bursting through the roof.Wasting no time Bug and the Sporemancer began taking clippings of the foliage and wrapping them securely in fungal cloth or storing them in clay jars. There was much to sample, hoping they could find something useful among the flora.Left to their own devices Jaw starts to explore the house on her own with Dart giving her a guided tour. Jaw and the recently enlightened ghoul walk through the halls, the Chieftain examining the peeling wallpaper and the crumbling furniture. Sidestepping a trickle of water from a crack in the ceiling Jaw glances up to a water-damaged portrait of what might've been a human female in a long dress. She stops and frowns as something seems grab her attention with the picture but she follows the goblin toward the main dining hall.Stepping into the room where the light of the sunset filtered faintly through the storm clouds she glances around the large room, a single long table running the length of the room with chairs scattered about haphazardly. Tarnished and rusted cutlery and broken plates still lined the tables as if it had been set for a meal when it had been abandoned. Glancing up to the head of the hall she stops in place when she sees the large portrait of the stern faced woman looking down on her.
>>47936022A fire blazed merrily in the hearth as she looked up at the portrait with a slight frown, "I'm not that scary-looking am I?" she mumbles and sips at her wine. Glancing over her shoulder at the sound of footsteps and voices. Stepping into the brightly lit hall were a pair of men, one human in the robes of a College Magister and a hobgoblin in the casual attire of a noble. They were laughing as they entered but calmed themselves with discreet coughs at the sight of her.Smiling the hobgoblin approaches, leaning in to kiss her cheek and she can't help but smile. Placing her mostly empty glass on the vacant table covered with a decorated cloth she turns to the mage who gives a deep bow and returns the courtesy with a nod of her head.Clearing his throat the hobgoblin motions to the mage, his hand resting on the lower back of her dress, "My dear, I'd like to introduce Magister Nichols. He works at the College studying diseases. I've, I mean, we've," he corrects himself as the lines around her eyes crease subtly, "Just made a sizable donation to the College in the hopes they can help find a cure for the Red Plague."Looking to the middle-aged man she swallows her distaste with a polite smile, "A pleasure to meet you, Magister. I pray to Lord Zurai you find a cure for this dreadful plague soon," she says with practiced smoothness, despite her instinctive distaste for the man.Adjusting the spectacles perched on his short nose the man smiles and nods, hands clasped behind his back, "The pleasure is all mine, Lady Creswen. Finding a cure for the Red Plague is one of our top priorities at the College. I just know we'll find it soon."Her husband smiles as he moves to pour them all fresh glasses of wine, handing them out among each other. Lifting their glasses the hobgoblin says, "To the cure and saving Meldric," before lifting the glass to his lips. She hesitates a moment, spotting a smudge on her glass but politely joins the toast with the other two.
>>47936080Jaw blinks rapidly, looking up to the concerned faces of Bone and Dart hovering over her. Sitting up where they'd laid her on the table she rubs her temples, her head throbbing with pain at the sudden memories. Several ferals surrounded them, yammering softly and reaching out in concern for her. Smiling she pats a feral human on the head to calm them then glances up at the portrait once more. She scowls.(Just realized I clicked the wrong damn picture. Get outta here, curious-gorilla)

>>47936571Shame you gotta call it here, but thanks for running mang. Digging this last twist, Jaw's about to get her old pad back.
>>47936672I feel kinda bad about the lack of content in the quest since I came back from hiatus.Death Among the Stars is just the more popular of the two I think
>>47936819As the guy who kept bugging you to bring this back, it really does seem that DAtS is just more popular. Also, idk what it is, but your writing actually seems to be more engaging in DAtS. I still like both of your quests but DAtS does seem a bit more... thrilling? idk...
>>47936910I think that's the civ/quest narration difference. Ghouls is written like an observer, from the 3rd person, DatS is in the first person, from the perspective of the protagonist. The writing is equally good (very good), it's just the difference in perspective.
>>47936819I enjoy both, but there is a lot more opportunity for player participation in DAtS generally speaking. You have so far been writing Red throat redux as a recap of what has occurred since the hiatus began and as such we haven't been quite as engaged as when you were asking for our input after every post, which is really the basis for player participation in any quest. Hopefully once things settle down and you reintroduce things like technology and magical advancement amongst the tribe that will change.
>>47936819Give the Red Throat Ghoul Quest more time it hasn't been out that long and you do have people playing this.
