You feel the adrenaline from your charge fade, and your heart beats, once."Halie stop hiding behind the banisters and get behind something solid.""WELL I CAN HARDLY GET BEHIND THE TABLE!" comes the expected response."Then get behind me"You change your stance, and your sword comes down vertically across your chest as the two goons laugh. "Heh, who do you think you are kid? A hero?""Don't you know there's no room for heroes in this world any more!"A crossbow bolt is unleashed to a point somewhere above your head and something moves your hands before you can even think. Your sword flashes and the projectile bounces into the ceiling. Halia settles in behind you and flicks a knife from behind your back, catching Goon#1 in the sword hand again. He yells as for the second time today, his sword falls from his grip. "FUCK! YOU WHORE! You think back to your days under Captain Williams. There was a plant, that someone was munching on, when he fell dead to a heart attack. For some reason, He'd been picking flowers and decided to chew the stems idly. Pretty flowers, pretty pink flowers that you'd seen somewhere before. "Well, Did they destroy Mary's glasshouse yet?""The glasshouse? I... I don't think anyone's been in there since they caught Wren trying to make firebombs in her distillery.""Wren? What did they do to her?""You don't want to hear it.""But the house is still there?""The distillery too. But Wren sealed the door. Some kind of arcane lock.""No shit? Wren's got the touch?""Touched in the head, maybe. It half killed her to do it.""Huh. Well. I've made up my mind. I'll challenge him to a duel. Me versus him, one on one, and if I win, his goons leave. If he wins... Well, he wont"Halia's eyes widen. "Are you *fucking* insane? Did you listen to me at all? He'll ruin you, you don't stand a chance!" You can see her eyes start to moisten, but she holds back the tears. "You have been stabbed, shot, and punched, you died not a day ago, and.. and I just got you back and you want to throw your life away again!""Halie-""I was wrong, you havn't changed at all, you're still focussed on yourself. You don't care about any of us. You don't care about me, Wren, Garr. You don't care about dad, or Harrfell at all!"You catch her fist in mid air."Sis, did you really think I was going to fight fair?"

"This is stupid. You're stupid.""Just do it okay?""I'll kill you if you die.""Good luck Sis""Shut up."You have no idea how you convinced your sister to do this, but you've got a ring of tinder set up, just outside the Mayor's office, with Oleander mixed in, and plenty of greenery. She's set up with a flint and tinder, around the back of the green house, with a trail of the last of the booze you had in the house (thank Aughantaur for dad's love of strong moonshine) leading to the ring. You've got your sword, and a proper shield you took from a lone bandit who is now nursing a dagger wound to the gut. And throat, chest, and thigh, so he won't be getting back up. Now it's just up to you to call out the Brigand, and set the terms of the duel."GIMBLE!" Silence. A difference from the boisterous laughter and footsteps you heard from the window a few seconds earlier. You stand well back, in the middle of the ring. "I'M CALLING YOU OUT, BRIGAND. A DUEL, ONE ON ONE, BOUND ON A BLOOD OATH."A man Stumbles out, pushed by a thick fist. Followed by what can only be described as a baby whale that is somehow walking around on land. "ON WHAT TERMS?" he roars back at you. You draw your knife and lower your voice. "To the death, if I win, Your goons leave Harrfell. If You win, you get my boat." He looks at you sideways. "You're Captain Mantell! I remember you! You crashed your ship on Crookhaven's sandbank! What would I do with a wreck?""The Fiends Delight was re-built. 12 Balistae, faster than ever. And she took down the Wolf's Hammer!""Hah! You expect me to believe that!""On my blood."The wobbling thing of fat looks at you, greed in his eyes""A blood oath can only be sworn by a Captain. I'll know if you're Lying.""Then you accept?"
"I accept your challenge.""Then by blood be bound. If I win, those who currently follow you, Gimble, shall leave Harrfell immediately." You slash your palm. Gimble continues the oath. "And if you, Captain Mantell, lose, I get the Fiends Delight!" he slashes his palm with the blade of an axe that he pulls from what seems to be the back of his pants. You shake, and the edges of the arena glow. And then they start to burn. Gimble's men start to jeer and roar. "CHEAT, CHEAT! LIAR AND FAKE!" Gimble takes his opportunity " YOU LIED CAPTAIN, I'll TAKE YOUR HEAD!" You follow your blow with another shield strike to the chest, and watch his eyes bulge. You're even more surprised when the haft of his axe strikes you in the head and knocks you off balance. That's it, no more Mr.Nice Captain. You shift, your sword held to your side, and your shield hiding your movements. Your prey is weak, his blood is thin, and you can see that really, it's not his fault. After all, you're not breathing, he is! A few of the town'sfolk have crawled out of the woodwork, and are watching. 13+7 more unnatural crits. Aughataur favours you it seems. He's halfway dead before your blade ever reaches him, but it goes deep into his throat. You can only assume that the gurgling that follows is somehow an insult to your honour. But the Oath honours only blood. You can hear the shock and gasps as black marks appear on the hands of the afflicted. They'll either leave the town in the next few days, or start dropping like flies. Most have left already, those that aren't dying of poison. As the fire dies down, you can see the sun start to rise, and the barrier caused by the oath has faded, letting more smoke out of the circle. The place is silent. And you lower your sword, to pull the bolt out from under your ribs. You start to hear the murmuring of the crowd. Lots of "Who's that?" and "isn't that..." going around. You look up from the corpse of the land whale. "What, no hero's welcome?"And we'll end there.
