Recap:Following a brief and profitable appearance at Scyth Corps monumental mockery of justice, you went to the Underground Grand Prix.As it turns out, the race consists of three legs and teams are scored according to whatever member of their team places highest in each leg, with the total determining the winner. Derek placed 6th in the first leg and you were poised to move beyond him going into the second but bad decisions resulting in you hitting a sprouter at high speed, injuring you, Jeremy, and your car.Now in 18th place and barely moving, you struggle to get your bearings as infested humanoids shuffle towards your location.
The car reeks of must and guts. The gas mask your wearing is hopefully providing some protection from whatever strain the sprouter was carrying but you’re probably going to want to pump yourself full of anti-fungals after you finish the race. If you finish the race. The engine is back on and you’re moving slowly, trying to escape the horde of sprouters that are slowly but surely rousing to the idea that a fresh victim sits in their midst. The turbocharger has vanished beneath the hood like a frightened animal as you push through them at low speed. These monsters must be as old as the war, as the infection has consumed nearly every part of them that was recognizably human. Tattered pieces of bone and scalp hang from craniums that could no longer contain brain matter intertwined with swelling fungal growth and hands have degraded into ropey messes that flap ineffectually at their sides as they shamble closer to impede your progress. You wipe the blood from your eyes, wincing as you touch each of the glass granules embedded in your forehead. More cars shoot past, taking advantage of the opening created by the sprouter mob focusing on you.>Position: [21/38][1/2]
[2/2]Beside you, Jeremy stirs and moans as he returns to consciousness.“What- what happened?”“We had a little accident. It’s fine.”“I- I think I’m hurt.”Like you, Jeremy has been stricken by broken glass and battered by the force of the collision. Blood drips from beneath his untrimmed black bangs and runs along the contours of his young face, framing it as he pleads with you, shaking like a leaf.“We can’t do this, we have to drop out.”You don’t know about dropping out but you could give up on winning. There’s too much riding on this. I'm going to get you through but we still have to try and place... I promise not to put you in any more danger than we absolutely need to be-"Before you can finish, the ground rumbles beneath you and the sprouters lope off in every direction, panicked. A huge worm bursts through the bottom of the elevated highway, swallowing a huge portion of it almost from underneath you. You slam on the gas and the tires of the Elevon squeal as you take off towards the next tunnel.Behind you you can hear brakes screeching as the other racers try and pass over the slim space left behind by the worm's destruction. The tunnel returns you to racing in darkness but the path is unusually straight. You start to wonder why it's so rigid when you emerge onto a claustrophobic city grid, where the buildings all touch a ceiling perhaps 30 feet high.Up ahead you can see one of the racers who passed you earlier. His luxury import squeals as he turns sharply at a 3-way intersection up ahead and goes right, moving around a mysterious glass structure. As you move closer to the intersection with its dead stoplight, you notice enormous concave discs hanging from nearby buildings, focused on this structure. What little remains of the signage indicates a highway to the right and a... lift to the left?>Position 21/38>roll 3d6+6, consume up to 6 Nerves to boost up to 3 times [10/13] each boost is two points>Go Right>Go Left>Go through the glass building (remember to duck!)

You can't see much through the fogged up glass but it looks like things are still growing in there. Rather than confirm that, you turn right and find yourself on an upwards ramp.Along the way you pass the car you saw earlier (his import seems to have broken down on the incline and he's stuck) and catch another who seems to be running out of juice. Are the amateur rigs running out of power?Seemingly in answer to your question, you pass by three more vehicles, all either stalled or slowed dramatically. None of them look like they belong to pros. The curving ramp finally opens onto a huge straightaway but the road is curiously jet black and crunches as you drive over it. You're confused until Jeremy whistles appreciatively. The road is coated by some kind of mass roach migration.Up ahead, you can see the other racers slowing as they attempt to navigate the slippery terrain.>Position: 14/38Roll 3d6+6 (usually boosts applicable) and select either, both, or none.>Reckless Charge: Degree of success raised by one (from regular to great or great to amazing) but DCs for this portion are raised by one.>Roach Manipulation: Have Jeremy sabotage pursuing racers by having the roaches pile up behind you.

Calling the streets blinding is a bit misleading. The sun has set and night has cast its cozy, UV-free blanket of darkness over the city. But the vibrant lights of a main street are enough to put stars in your eyes as you return to the surface like a high octane baby shot from the womb of mother earth herself.Colors seem unnaturally vibrant and you struggle to retain your typical level of control as you weave through traffic. Your knuckles glow white beneath the grime and blood as you tighten your grip on the steering wheel.“Son,” you say.Being addressed as “son” for the first time catches Jeremy’s attention. His normally tired eyes widen with intrigue.“If there’s something I know, it’s that you’ll never be anything if you spend your life running away from a challenge. You can’t be WEAK! The minute you show WEAKNESS they’ll swoop in and take EVERYTHING from you. Understand?”He freezes, caught off-guard by your burst of conviction. Maybe it’s just the pep pills but you feel strangely self-aware. He must think you half-mad but at the same time you’re certain this is the right course of action. Dead certain.“We’re NOT going to give up, not even if they try and kill us for it. I need you to do this for me, I need you to touch Arwenna’s car. Will you do that?”“I-I don’t know if I can-”“I didn’t ask if you could! I asked if you WOULD!”He nods slowly, then again with more conviction. That means it’s just on your to catch her.You floor it, dodging traffic in the way you’ve become unnaturally good at. Cits scream, cheer, and curse from the sidewalks and their own cars, enjoying the race or despising it in near equal measure. Many just run for the nearest shelter, fearful of high speed crashes.[1/2]
>>45185061At close to 180 MPH with almost no windshield, the air nearly forces your eyes shut. Small pebbles and bits of debris become like bullets. You edge nearer and nearer until finally Jeremy is in arm’s length. Then you keep the car steady for his sake.>Nerves: [4/13]- You’re pushing your mental limits. The kid slaps the side of Arwenna’s vehicle and, as if stricken herself, she activates her famous booster and speeds ahead. >>45188415It was a incredibly average roll. Modifiers were everything. We didn't roll for Lucas dodging them though? In the end, the mantises were pointless.
>>45188688Mantises suffered an incredibly bad roll with the d100. But it was something of a gambling strategy to begin with, considering the mantises have a hard time keeping up with targets moving this fast. They did serve a purpose in giving Lucas the very narrow edge he needed but it was almost not enough.
>>45188725Then Jeremy can feel accomplished. He gets a video game after Vince collects his winnings. No, two video games.
>>45188651Was the slipstream choice the easier, logical one?I guess the Elevon is still too slow to accelerate.
>>45187897>This will most likely be your penultimate decision.>it was actually the ultimate decision
>>45188725How much bad decisions and bad luck hit us in hindsight. Also really, we mostly took Jeremy cuz we didn't want to let him out of our sight and he ended up both getting hurt and helping. That wasn't planned.
>>45188960Yes. It's a little bit ridiculous that you did as well as you did but your modifiers are pretty godly at this stage.>>45189180You dodged most of the consequences from your bad decisions. I've grown soft as a QM and don't rip heads off like I used to. Another reason for the hiatus. You'd be surprised by what's planned and what isn't. Or maybe not.You were actually very lucky for much of the race, though you collectively have a tendency to underestimate your chances when you get hurt and overestimate them when you have a hot streak.Something to consider as I rework the system, to be sure.I think when we pick up with Vince again, he'll be in a more stable position from which to hatch the next stage of his life. He's slipped out of GEC servitude and become quite wealthy. His sonfu is alive and he deserves quality time, Russians be damned.
>>45189269>Another reason for the hiatus.Of course, you must take a retreat to meditate in the mountains until you rehone your killer instinct. So which ones were the bad ones. The worst decision was avoided, taking the high road. What kind of death awaited down below? Fire or suffocation?
>>45189661>what kind of death waited down belowhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landfill_gasGindrinker's Bay was actually a bay before being filled with trash IRL and parts are still closed off due to landfill gas buildup. Down below were pockets of invisible methane gas that might have been ignited by your engine. This is also why everything smelled awful when you first arrived. An actual bad decision was not trying to make that makeshift phone network at the start, which might have allowed you to communicate in a limited fashion with your teammates.A good/bad decision was not taking the lift, which had about a 50/50 chance of being a shortcut or a hold up.Not driving through the greenhouse was pretty much a good decision on every level.Boosting when you did was an excellent decision. Not taking the shortcut on the high road was probably a good decision though it could have paid off as well (it would have resulted in a few passes if successful).I disapproved of the middle road you took at the start of the thread (the racing more conservatively path) but it obviously paid off.Really, you mostly made good decisions in retrospect.
>>45189852>communicateWell not anymore once we foolishly rolled to hack.>disapproved of the middle road
>>45189269And with Shan's files downloaded hopefully. We did vote to advance that fingerprint-using plan right.
>>45187897>Behind you, the gang leader fires his weapon, fumbles it due to recoil, and loses control of his massive bike, plowing into parked cars.At last, the Sonic Cycle is destroyed. Also I just realized the Chinese sanic biker gang is like the equivalent of that Russian Gadget cult.http://englishrussia.com/2010/02/17/russian-gadget-hackwrench-religion/
>Vince never got to see that bookie NPC>Vince never got to bet on himselfoops. There goes that idea.
>>45188651>He may have the fungal sonfu equivalent of a nasty cold for a little while.Sounds like a job for Esperanza's home cooking.
>>45189852>An actual bad decision was not trying to make that makeshift phone network at the start,>implying rolling 3d6+1 instead of 3d6+4 would have been a good decisionVince fails the majority of his technology attempts.
Just saying, so glad Vince lied to Chen and drove them away. The Russians clearly would have made anyone Vince was honest with, like Lopez, a target. Or anyone that he appeared to give two cares about, like Jeremy. It was for her own good. Vince is dangerous now. And also is one less person to be potentially kidnapped.
