You shake your head, feeling confident. If Nila can do it, then you may as well try. "No need to trouble her," you nod and reach out your hand towards the river. Will and power, they said. Well, you have the will and how much power can ordering a bunch of fish to swim closer to the shore take? At first, everything seem to be going well. The fishers gasp as the silvery shapes of fish start to be sighted, closer to the surface and grouping together."A-are you... You're doing that?" gasps one of the fishers, slack-jawed in astonishment. Sadly, as you nod towards him, you start to lose your grip on the spell. It's suddenly a lot harder to hold onto! Fish start to slip away from your magical grasp and in desperation, you grip tighter. The river bulges upwards and everyone starts to nervously back away as you wrestle with power you don't understand and rapidly realise you're out of your depth with! Fish wriggle in place, stuck still by the tightly packed water, the free-flowing river swirling around it. Shouts of alarm and calls for caution shake your concentration more and more until..!BOMF!A thunderclap behind your eyes cuts your legs from under you like you'd been punched in the face by a bear. The water you were 'grasping' suddenly explodes, soaking and stinging everyone around and raining fish, both whole and in pieces, down upon the ground, occasionally interrupted by the placement of someone's head, hand, or upturned face. You have the most splitting ache of something you didn't know you even POSSESSED and a spiderweb of black lines run from your fingertips to halfway up your forearm, itching and burning like you've been attacked by a swarm of bees armed with stinging nettles. Fortunately, the whatever-ache soon subsides and there's plenty of cool bank mud to at least partially soothe the stinging.
>>44306326As you're nursing your arm and your companions are gathering up the bits and pieces of flying fish, Nila emerges from the river and looks around in utter confusion. "What in the wide world even happened here?!"After you explain what you tried to do and show her you arm, she sighs and shakes her head in sympathy. "Burnout. You tried to do too much too soon! You thought just because you can use magic you can jump in and start doing whatever you wished?" She smacks the palms of your hands lightly, causing you to yelp in pain. "Idiot! You're lucky I'm fond of you... Stick to minor things first. Small blessings and healing. If you try to do too much, you could harm, or even kill yourself. You mustn't ever, EVER let these..." she traces a cool, soothing finger up one of the lines, "Reach your heart!" She pokes you painfully in the chest and holds her finger up to your face. "Understand? Be glad you didn't try to turn back a flood or something."Is there anything you would like to talk to Nila about, before she storms off in a worried huff?

You reach out and take her hand, squeezing it gently. Her eyes soften, but all the same, the incident has changed something. Maybe it's how she perceives you... Her look is less the happy, even loving eyes she gave you before and now something almost akin to pity. "I'm sorry," you sigh, placing her hand against your cheek. Her skin is always so cool and soothing, like the water in summer. "I didn't want to waste your time with something trivial and I had no idea magic was so dangerous to use.""It's not, if you just know what you're doing," she nods, crouching down to your level. "You humans always are reaching beyond what you can do, especially you, Trym. Magic doesn't care how clever or ambitious you are; if you try too much, you'll burn yourself. The stronger your will is and the better you understand what you are doing, the more you can achieve, but you can't go beyond your means, like you try to do with everything else.""You're always understanding," you mutter, "When you first started talking to me, it felt like I had to teach and protect you, but now...""I was young," she replies. "I had been here for more seasons than I can count, but until I started to watch you humans and especially you, I had no idea who or what I was. Since then, I've grown up. Now I can finally use what hundreds of your lifetimes has given me in experience.""Especially me, hmm?" you smirk, gently teasing her, "If I didn't know better, I'd call that something.""You're the one who came looking for me!" she exclaims, blushing and looking away. "It was the first time anyone had. That... Caught my attention and you've never done anything to lose it.""Yep, sounds like love to me," you laugh. "Well, let me be clear then, beautiful and understanding Nila: I love you too."The goddess covers her face with her hands and makes a small complaining moan, literally melting a little at her edges. "You can't just say something like that out of no-where! I didn't have any time to prepare myself!"

Power builds on itself as it is used, so the more you practice and the longer you live, the more potent your magic will become. Besides that, understanding directs and focuses will. It's like how you can't cut with a river stone, but you can with sharpened flint. >>44309935Your conversation somewhat falls apart after that. Your comrades are still gathering the remains of your fishbomb and aren't bothering you and Nila, so you decide to give them some space in return. Besides, your flirting grows ever more intense after you re-locate past the bend in the river, the high bank of which puts you handily out of sight. Hands stray to places that make each of you gasp and squirm. Your lips press against one another passionately and Nila has to caution you that alerting everyone to what you're doing would probably be shameful, given how hard they're working while the two of you spend your time naked and entwined as two trees that have grown together. Realising she's right, you slow the movement of your hands and hips and turn the wild moans and cries into softer gasps and long, drawn-out groans of pleasure and love. You return after an hour or so, glowing and unable to hide the smile on your face. Nila already kissed you goodbye, lying out on the soft grass of the bank and reveling in the afterglow of your lovemaking.Your clansmen aren't fooled for a moment about what's gone on, but they don't say a word. Alright, calling the votes here and writing the next part! Time to find what it was I said about fields supporting how many people again. For some reason, it never made it into my notes...
With the year starting to wear on, you begin to worry you will be unable to get a harvest in before winter, should you wait any longer. It's finally time to start expanding your fields. Given how Mesut wanted his family to be the ones in charge of the harvest and distributing the grain, you immediately petition him for help in the task."Just so we're clear," he sighs, "We'll help with the planting and tending, but our agreement was that my family handles the harvest and handing the grain out, alone."You're starting to have doubts about this whole arrangement. However temporarily it might be, your agreement puts the entire harvest in Mesut's hands. Regardless though, you can't do it without him.Mesut gathers his family and stirs up as much support among the clan as he can. Between the two of you, you soon have a respectable work force of mostly-willing volunteers waiting for your direction. Wild weeds and inedible plants need to be cleared away, the earth needs to be turned, seeds need to be scattered and trodden in - it's a lot of work and your labour force isn't the most organised. You have 15 labour points available. Your land is unsurveyed>Small field - 10 points - 2 land>Large field - 25 points - 6 landPoints spent carry over to future turns. Points will be divided between the number of constructions you choose to work on in a given turn. How will you use your labour?

>>44312432>>Large field - 25 points - 6 landI'm not worried about Mesut. If he does something stupid then we can magic him or unleash the wolves.

You will NOT be able to fill it up or even CLOSE in Trym's lifetime.>How do we get more labour points?Bigger workforce, better tools, more oganisation. It's that simple. You're currently a larger stone-age tribe which has been poked into helping out by two clan VIPs. Not all that effective, as work forces go.

With so many hands available, you decide it's time to work on something mildly more impressive than the tiny garden patch you've already set up. A field three times its size will be simpler than many smaller fields, even if it takes more work to cultivate initially. It takes some time and effort to direct everyone to what needs doing, but the work is fairly simple. It's not long before stone and carved bone blades are chopping and sawing at the tangled mess of plants, while simple digging sticks turn the earth and break the ground. You and Mesut of course add as much to the project as anyone, but as you work, you try picking everyone's minds as to their opinion. The vast majority are confused at what seems like a waste of time, but a few others, mostly Mesut's family, are starting to see the shape of things. Between your clan and the aurochs, the wild food in the area isn't going to sustain you forever and if you hunt the aurochs out of existence, that's only going to really add to the problem. Controlled growing and harvesting of the grain is going to go a long way towards helping everyone in the clan. A few are even excited at the prospect of growing fruit trees and berry bushes later on. Still, their opinion is in the minority and most simply grumble at the back-breaking work.A spring starts turning to the heat of summer, you finally finish up. A large stretch outside the village, between it and the river, is now cultivated and the seeds you planted rest within the earth. It's not long before everyone starts noticing the tiny, green shoots. The evidence that they haven't worked for nothing at all serves as a small morale boost as everyone congratulates themselves on a job well done (although some still shrug at why it was done at all).
>>44314309I mean, Trym is honestly not old, even in terms of caveman lifespans. So long as we don't try to do too much and test the boundaries of magic while still weak in it, we should at least last a few more years (barring any really obviously stupid decisions)

I fiddled the numbers a bit. I realised they were a bit too high, so you got the field done in one turn!>Small field - 5 points>Large field - 12 pointsIf a project can be completed in one turn, it will be. Any remaining points will then be applied in the same way, until there are no more projects that can be immediately completed. Remaining labour points will then be split evenly between remaining projects.>>44314309>>44314676Or there may just be a timeskip. Votes called and typing. That'll be it for this evening.I would like to address the fear that this is turning into a civ thread however:The idea was always to follow the rise of a people from stone age to wherever we end up, through the eyes of a single person each generation. You are the ones that chose to have an impact on the tribe and take a leader's role. If you'd preferred to explore and mess around with the spirits like a nomad or hermit, that's how we would have done things. I'm only following the will of the players and presenting you with what seems like the appropriate focuses for someone in your position.

>>44315382That's not a bad idea
Your crops will take some time to flourish, so in the meanwhile, you need to find some other way to provide for your family. Thankfully, Nila is ever bounteous and your injuries from over-using magic have faded enough by the early days of summer that you don't feel awkward about returning to the riverbank. With Mesut discouraging hunting beyond the necessities, there are more fishermen and at the river's edge, stabbing into the water with spears. A small group however have gathered around a young pair who seem to be dragging a loosely-woven basket through the water. The young woman splashes ahead, while the man holds the basket submerged. As you curiously look over the small crowd's shoulders, he lifts the basket free of the water with a straining heave to reveal it full of slippery, shining fish that his woman's splashing have scared right into his net!You can't help but join in with the congratulatory cheer. It's a brilliantly simple invention, after all and promises to make life much easier. Without one of your own however, you are forced to rely on the old-fashion method of spear fishing. You can catch enough to keep your family fed for now, but no more. You take the time to chatter as you silently consider your meager catch however. It seems that the clan is a little confused by your pet project. Those that came because of you mostly did so out of old friendship and humoring you; it's true that many were from your old family. Others came to help because of your connection to the gods and guidance you've offered in the past - it seems you have more respect than you thought, at least among those who aren't the elders. Meanwhile, those that came because of Mesut seem to have the vague idea that while the scheme seems slightly cracked, if the best hunter in the tribe is supporting it, there must be something to it.

>>44320323Just for the record? You guys haven't actually asked ANYONE for help. It's all been even trades. Honestly, Trym is getting a reputation with the people who know him for being too stubborn and proud to ask anyone for anything.

You have some unexpected help at the river now! Until now, Sera has got away with light work helping Beren around the house, but she'll be nine years old just after mid-fall this year. It's time for her to start pulling her weight. And with Sera, Ebba too wants to help out. You show your young daughters how to catch fish with their hands and how to clean them of scales, guts and the larger bones, using small flint and bone knives. Sera takes to it as easily as any child of the clan, listening to you attentively, but Ebba presents an interesting problem. You often find her just idly tickling the fish or paddling, not paying attention to what she's doing. She takes to the water more readily than land, nearly giving you a panic attack when you look up to see her swimming deep in the middle of the river, seemingly immune to the current's pull. It makes sense, once you consider who her mother is; to her, maybe swimming in the river is the same as enjoying an embrace in her mother's arms?Despite Ebba's attention span, her natural talent is a great boon, as is Sera's extra helping hands. For the first time in a while, you manage to accumulate enough food to store some for the future. Sadly, it's only enough for two people, for half a season. You could maybe make it stretch further, but everyone would be hungry, there's no question of that. One day as the middle of summer draws closer however, Ebba swims close by you and stops, listening. All of a sudden, she looks up at you. "Mommy says there's people coming this way from down the river, Da.""What?" You pause, straightening your back from where you were hunched over, waiting for a fatally stupid fish to swim close enough to catch your spear in its back.Ebba points downstream with complete certainty. "She says they're coming this way. They'll be here after midsummer."
>>44321574Sure enough, just as Ebba predicted, a few days later you spot a group following the river upstream on the far bank. There looks to be just a little over twenty of them and oddly enough, they're accompanied by a massive herd of goats, with a few wolf-dogs much like yours running around, keeping the animals contained. Once the wandering group and the fishers spot one another, there's a brief pause, as each side assesses the other. You notice what looks like slings being readied among the herders, as the fishers hastily pack up and retreat from the water's edge. Not so much as a harsh word is exchanged, but the other group looked wary; you clan certainly is and a meeting of elders is called to discuss what should be done.As the head of a family, you are given a seat with the elders. With no grey in your hair, you would normally be afforded less attention and respect if you choose to speak, but your position as the clan's unofficial shaman could well upset that. The debate drags on for most of a day and into the night, before the elders, inevitably, decide to do nothing and see if the situation changes, moving the fishers to another spot, further away from where the herders seem to be camping. What will you do?>Accept the elder's plan - their experience gives them wisdom in such things>Propose sending someone to meet with the herders - it worked out well for the strangers, after all>Suggest attacking and driving the herders out - we really don't need the competition right now>Suggest raiding the herders and stealing some of their flock - those goats would be extremely useful if your tribe could learn to keep them, like the herders have
>>44321847>>Propose sending someone to meet with the herders - it worked out well for the strangers, after allWith an escort in case they are hostile.
>>44321847I will go meet these new strangers. They bring with them goats that do not flee. Imagine aurochs that do not try to gore you!

"I disagree," you speak up. Heads turn to look at you; not all, but some. "The last time we took a 'wait and see' approach, we ended up having to change our entire way of life."That stops a few of the elders in their tracks. No-one wants to have to repeat what happened last time."If we keep sitting on our hands, waiting to see what they do, we hand all initiative to them," you continue. "They're not as numerous as the strangers, so maybe they'll consider some kind of arrangement? I'm especially interested in how they managed to get goats to just follow them around, rather than fleeing at the first sign of a hunter...""You would be," mutters one of the elders, "But I see your point. Maybe it would be better to send someone to talk with them. Not you, Trym, at least not at first... You'd get to talking about their goats and nothing else would get done.""Then again, the gods aid might be helpful," mentions another. "Maybe he should go?"Again, the council is paralyzed until sleep and old age claims enough of them to agree to continue tomorrow. The following day, talks resume and it is eventually agreed that joining the first group or not should be up to you. By now, many elders are saying that meeting with the herders was what they supported all along, but that's fairly typical of them.>Join the group>Leave it to the elders' pick
>>44323706>Leave it to the elders' pickJust caught up on this, holy shit Trym is getting stuff done. We have to bend to the elders occasionally.
>>44323706>Join the group
>>44323706>>Join the group
>>44323706We're going to need to figure out which of the elders are actually leaders and which are followers. I mean this is just ridiculous. The elders decide things because they're supposed to be wise but if they succumb to group think and sway to the popular opinion we're going to have problems in the future.
>>44323706>join the groupAnd jokingly promise that we won't let their goat take up too much of the conversation.

Maybe we should use the geode and call out to our big white wolf. While he may not be "on our side" he may be willing to offer a little aid. we could ask him to escort us look the part of a powerful god word it as showing his strength to these new comers in the way humans do. but do not be hostile unless the start it. If he wants something in return joke he wouldn't do it for us, but obviously pay him.also make an offering of the net to the Bear spirit, the Bear might like easier fishing methods.
>>44327373I think an offering of fish may be better. Mayne we could exchange it for the bear teaching us about other foods.honey
>>44323706>join the groupWe should start flaunting a little, we've got incipient gods on our side. On that note, I'm all for making an offering to one of the spirits to escort our expedition, we should always make a point of negotiating from a position of power.
