https://twitter.com/Line_of_HeroesSeeing as you've used most of your food, between your experiments and just plain hunger, you elect to head to the river to fish. As the weather is starting to get warmer, more and more fishers are heading to the river for their food. You wade knee-deep into the current, shivering slightly as you feel the traces of meltwater still present in the current from the mountains. At first, your catch is small, but respectable, but after a few days pass and you start building a bit of a surplus to see you through leaner times and help in your experiments, something odd happens...As a catfish swims between your spread legs, you prepare to stab down, but are stopped by the sight of something deeper in the river; a shadow you've not seen before. Thinking it might be another pike for you, you wade deeper, about up to your waist (the river itself reaches your armpits at its deepest points) and look around. At first, there's nothing, but then, quite suddenly, a face looks up at you from beneath the water! It's distorted and ripples, even more so than the current should make it seem and you splash back with a cry! The shouting draws the attention of the other fishers, but once you explain what you saw and they search, they can find nothing.Soon after, you find yourself at the centre of attention. Not of humans though, but of fish! They mob and flock around your legs and feet, bumping against you and even mouthing at your legs and toes. It becomes quite worrying when among the trout and catfish, you see the occasional pike, but it does come with its advantages. By the time the day ends, you've caught eight times what anyone else has! Every time your spear thrusts down, it seems to come up with a fish wriggling on it and within a few minutes, the whole swarm is back! You have your pick of every fish in the river!

"Brother Elia!" You throw yourself down next to your glum companion, "I'm worried.""Hmmh?" He barely looks over at you, lying on his back and staring up at the clouds."Someone I know hasn't been eating well lately," you nod, "He's just been sitting gloomily around and has lost interest in everything. If he doesn't eat well, he could end up dying." You fake a huge sigh and lightly smack the back of your hand over Elia's exposed stomach. "Now WHO I wonder, could that be and what sickness has consumed him that he doesn't even eat?"Elia grabs your hand and throws it away, grumbling. "I don't want to talk about it.""That's not how this is going to work," you retort, shaking your hand out and poking him with your foot until he rolls over and you can rest your feet on his back. "I'm your band leader. If I don't help my band when they're sick, then what am I?""A leader who doesn't know when he needs to lay low and wait for the wolf to walk on by," sighs your brother, trying to get free of your annoyance. "Fine, if you won't leave me alone... It's Galit. I'm afraid she's going to be Mesut's woman.""Is that all?""What do you mean 'is that all'?!" Elia explodes, sitting sharply upright and glaring at you. "I couldn't bear it if she chose another over me! The thought's just too cruel!"Of course, you wouldn't know the story of Romeo and Josephine, but the reason behind it is still clear to you. Your friend's so besotted, it would take a miracle to talk sense into him now. "Alright, alright," you concede, "But... Well, I can't leave you moping like this, so how about..."

You speak with strangers and make friends with them. Me, I'm just weak-spear.""If that's what you think, then why are you even trying?" you ask, squatting on your haunches and staring Elia in the eyes. "There has to be something you can do, or you wouldn't even be sad." Elia is unable to meet your stare, looking away in shame."There is something..." he mutters."Well what is it?""The waterfall, at the head of the valley. No-one dares hunt there." Elia gestures up the river, towards the direction of the roaring waterfall, the pool and the haunting mists beyond the rapids the elders have always warned you away from. "If I could bring something back- But it's too far and too much of a risk. No-one goes there; it's bad luck!"What will you say?>You're right, it is bad luck. But don't let that discourage you! I'm here! Sorry I missed the beginning of the thread, was super tired and had a mid afternoon nap.
>>43679064Well you really haven't missed much.
"If there's bad luck, we'll face it together." You smack Elia's back in the style of the strangers you wintered with. He slumps a little from the force. "We'll carry half each, so there won't be as much!""You'd do that for me?" he asks, looking a little surprised, even after your time together. "You know I'm likely to be a burden, right?""I've carried worse," you shrug. "Get your sling. We'll leave at first light."Few of the village come out to see you off in the early morning air. The sun is colouring the world like flames as you leave amid birdsong. The fresh air at least puts Elia in a good mood. "It's good you're coming, actually," he says, "I mean, if I went alone, no-one would believe me." It's a point you're forced to concede.Making the trek up the valley in spring is very different to the usual late walk this far, with winter harrying at your heels. You have a chance to appreciate the beauty of the world around you. The hunting and ground may not be as forgiving as further down the valley, but the way the stones rise and fall, surrounded by flowering trees and bushes fills the air with a sweet and invigorating scent. Even after many days, as you finally reach the rapids, the feeling of surety hasn't yet faded. The rapids themselves however, prove a difficult challenge. There is no easy path to follow the river and you are faced with the challenge of either leaping over the rocks themselves, or wading through the powerful current and risking being swept off your feet. For his part, Elia takes a firm grip on the stones and painstakingly tries his luck climbing over them, slick and slippery in the spray from the river. What will you do?>Climb the rocks with Elia 2d10 (Speed)>Wade the river against the current 2d10 (Strength)Please remember that even if you're rolling the same dice, the target number may be different!

The travel is hard and scrambling over the rocks is by no means an easy feat. Twice you have to reach up and help Elia to re-gain his footing and he has to return the favour once as well, as you slip and crash part-way into the river. The powerful current feels like hands gripping at your leg, tugging you into the water to dash your head on the rocks and never move again. Just as you begin to slip, Elia reaches out and grabs your goatskin jacket, heaving at you to pull you back to where you can grip again. Regardless of his timely rescue, you've still twisted your ankle painfully.>You've twisted your ankle and suffer -2 on all speed rollsFinally, you both reach a part where the banks widen enough for you to find your footing and walk the rest of the steep by manageable path up the side of the craggy hillface. As you reach the rise, before you stretches out a large, calm pool, fed on the far side by a crashing waterfall that fills the entire plateau with mist. You can make out stones just beneath the water's surface, forming a makeshift path of stepping-stones to the island in the center of the pool, about eight to ten spans across. Elia looks around, panting for breath."Well... We made it... Now what?"Now what indeed...>Look for something huntable. At least something must make its home here, beyond the reach of predators>Explore the island in the pool. Maybe it has something worth bringing back>Look into the pool itself. >>43681310>>43681478Sorry guys. A personal matter came up. Plus it's 4am and I'm falling asleep at the wheel. The pool is wide and deep. You have no idea how deep it is, as you can't see the bottom, but you can feel something unusual about this place, something almost familiar. It hits you just as you dip your spear into the water to see if you can reach the bottom; it's the same feeling you had when you were touching the silver leaves. This revelation comes to you just as the tip of your spear touches the bottom. Laying on your belly, it's the full reach of your spear and your arm deep. With your face so close to the surface, you have a perfect view of what's looking up at you from below, too... A face. THE face; the distorted, rippling face you saw before in the river, now a mere hand-span from yours, black eyes gazing into yours and... Changing as you watch, to an amber hue. You start up, as the head moves forward and breaks the water. Elia shouts and reaches for a sling stone, as something inhuman looks up at you. It's neither fish, nor human, nor water, but some odd mixture of all three. It regards you with a strange curiosity, before splashing back into the pool and vanishing into the shadowy depths. Elia stares in shock. "What... In the world was THAT?""Something new," you reply, a little shaken by your close encounter. "This place isn't just Bad Luck, brother, it's... Something else."What will you do?>Look for something huntable. At least something must make its home here, beyond the reach of predators>Explore the island in the pool. >>43684092It might be who knows for certain? Britfag does.
>>43684092It is not. The temple last time was a wooden construction; these stones are perfectly smooth and natural, or as natural as you can get in this place. In other news, I'm back and ready to roll for at least a few hours or so. Who's still here?
I really want to hook our bro Elia up. He may not be a genius, but he's the Sam to our Frodo. He's been there to tell us when we're about to do something stupid
>>43686674And he's gone.
With great care, you gingerly put your foot on the first of the stepping stones. The hair-thin layer of water over them makes them precarious footing, but thankfully, they're close enough that leaps of faith aren't needed. In the centre of the lake, the world seems almost un-naturally quiet and still. Mist wraps around both you and Elia and even the crash and thunder of the waterfall seems to be reduced. The island itself is nothing special. Eight men with their arms stretched to either side could straddle it. At the centre however, lies a small, shallow pool of water so clear that at first, you mistakenly believe there is nothing filling the sandy indentation at all. at the bottom of the pool lies a cluster of dozens of softly glowing, perfectly spherical stones no bigger than your fingernail that cast an eerie light onto your face as you look down on them.Elia crows in triumph. "Now THAT is worth the trip, brother! Better than leaves too. I could make Galit a necklace with those that so fine she'd choose me in an instant!" He reaches forward, intending to snatch the pearls from the pool, only to flinch back as a something indistinct, the size and shape of a thin spear, streaks across the island and splashes into the water. The pair of you look up in shock, your spear pointed in to the mists, as Elia shouts and whips his sling around in a blurring circle. The spray clears just a little and on the bank of the island, you again see that strange face that looked up at you from the water. It seems to have solidified itself just a little now though, looking less like a rippling and distorted reflection. As you stare in shock, it (or rather, she... It looks feminine) bares flat, straight teeth and hisses at the pair of you. The being has pulled itself halfway onto the shore with webbed hands, while its lower body stays submerged in the pool. The water around it boils, twists and even fountains upwards, arcing around her in elegant curves.

Done with it now, so I can focus on you guys.>>43687235The entity opens its mouth and sounds like it tries to speak, but all you hear are the burbling, indistinct sounds of a drowning man. "What do we do?" Elia whispers to you. "What even IS that?""I don't know, but I don't want to make it any angrier," you reply, pointing your spear at the ground. "Move back, slowly and put down your sling."As you and Elia slowly back away, the strange, scaled woman hauls herself further onto land. Where there should be legs, a long tail, almost like an eel or a snake, coils behind her, causing Elia to shiver in fear. "She's not- What is she? A human or an animal?" His hands shake, as you both retreat to the edge of the island and the serpent-lady coils protectively around the small pool, still eyeing you wavily."We can't go back empty-handed," grumbles Elia. As if she could understand him, the hair-like fins around the serpent-lady's head flutter and she raises a webbed hand, one finger pointing behind her in the direction of the waterfall. What do you do?>Follow her direction and inspect the waterfall>Change your mind and rush her. >>43687970>>Follow her direction and inspect the waterfall
>>43687970>Follow her direction and inspect the waterfall
Carefully crossing the stones again, you lead the way towards the waterfall, with Elia close behind, eyeing the water nervously. As you left the small island, the strange woman slipped into the water once again and vanished, but you both know she's likely watching you from just beneath the surface, out of sight. Her eyes were odd, you think, remembering staring into them as they changed from black to amber. They weren't quite the witless eyes of a scared beast, but they also didn't carry the awareness and intelligence of a human. She's somewhere caught between the two, perhaps? As you approach the waterfall, the crash of water drives the ability to think from your head. Even from here, it's like a dumbeat on your entire body, letting you feel the weight and power of the water, as the spray soaks into your clothes and hair. Small stones in the slick grass of the bank slither and slip under your feet, but you fight to keep your balance. Glancing down however, you spot something unexpected. One of the stones, cracked open by some unknown force or hand, shines inside. Casting a nervous look at the pool, you bend and pick it up, staring in shock at the sharpness and light within. Grown within the shell of a stone, like a bird in an egg, are clear flakes of stone, crystal, that glitters in the light. As you're looking in surprise at the stone, with Elia peering over your shoulder, you suddenly feel a wet, slick hand grasp your ankle. You look down and kick in surprise, but with alarming strength and speed, the serpent-woman rises from the pool, clinging to your body to climb. Elia leaps back, calling your name, but slips in the wet grass and falls flat on his back. The woman's strange eyes lock with yours...
>>43688323She bends her head, pulling at your hand that holds the stone and breathes into it. Before your eyes, the formerly lifeless, clear crystals begin to shine and sparkle for a moment. Their radiance soon fades, but they still have a soft luminescence to them. As quickly as she climbed you, the serpent-woman lets go and falls to the ground. She scrabbles about, finding another cracked-open stone and breathing into it as she did the one you hold, cradling it between her hands. She then slithers over to Elia, now motionless and staring in confusion and presses the stone into his hand. She spares you both one more look, before vanishing into the pool with a flash of yellow scales and a splash of water."What... Was that just now?" Elia asks dumbly, looking down at the gift in his hand."I don't know..." you reply, choosing your words carefully. "But It looks like she's okay with us taking these?""I've had enough of this place to last a lifetime," grumbles Elia, picking himself up. "Still... At least she didn't want to drink our blood or anything." He cups his hands around his mouth and calls to the pool, "Thank you, strange fish-lady!""At least that will make a good gift for Galit," you shrug, tucking your own stone into your bag. "Now let's leave before she changes her mind."
>>43688336The walk back to the village passes largely without incident. Elia is silent most of the way, but the further you get from the waterfall, the more cheery he seems to be and he begins plotting what kind of gift he will make his share of the crystals into when he returns. For your part, you can't help but wander what strangeness the crystals hold. Something else is going on here; something beyond what you can touch and taste in real terms... And these crystals and the one that gave them to you might hold the key to unlocking it... Or they might spell doom for you and your people, by toying with things you don't understand...>Advise Elia to be careful with the crystals. "You should be careful," you advise Elia, "We don't know what these crystals even are, in truth.""They're pretty and shine with light. What's to question?" shrugs Elia, not even breaking his stride."You felt that place as much as I did. That fish-woman that gave us these wasn't normal and stones don't shine like fire. They could be dangerous for all we know!""If she meant us harm, brother, she had you in her hands," he sighs, "You're worrying too much. They're a good gift and I mean to put mine to use!""Would you listen to me?!" you snarl in frustration, laying a hand on Elia's shoulder and spinning him around to look at you. "I don't know what it is, but the crystals feel dangerous to me! I'm begging you brother, be careful!"Elia frowns and smacks your hand away. "She gave us one apiece, brother! If you want to be careful and hoard yours in some hole in the ground then fine, they're yours to do that, but I will use mine as I wish!" So saying, he turns on his heel and stalks ahead of you, clearly intent on ending the conversation.Once you return to the camp, it is very nearly summer. Elia immediately sets to work chipping the crystals from his stone, working in secrecy as he fashions them into a fine gift. On the first day of summer, he presents Galit with a finely-worked necklace. Clearly his time helping you with the slings has paid off. He has dyed the string with flowers and berries to make it red as new blood and the crystals, shining faintly blue, hang in a cluster like a pinecone in the hollow between Galit's breasts. She's instantly taken by the gift and although nothing has been officially said yet, she stays by Elia's side from then on, causing your friend to walk taller than he ever has, telling the story of how you and he snatched the crystals from under the claws of a monster to anyone who will listen!
