Sup, /tg/. Last night, a little thread popped up about an old (and recently rebooted) lego line called Bionicle. Known for its lore and dedicated fanbase, in this thread a group of us came together and discussed how to make a game happen.Several things happened, including a google doc for idea cataloging (horribly messy right now) Link Here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RmGLUBNkpkZf-Nl-rQRh_0kMiTuynB22ZNhbuQcV_rA/editThere's also a skype chat, contact plexwolfe on skype (that's me) if you want to join the team!In the mean time, we can continue in this thread, just casually chatting about ideas and concepts surrounding the universe and how they apply to tabletop.
If you'd like to join the Skype chat, please send a contact request to either "plexwolfe" or "budu46". The former's location should be Arlington, United States and the latter's should be somewhere in Finland. If you would like to contribute, most discussion of the system is occurring in the group chat with the Google Doc mostly being used to document things.
>>43584489What, really? No way.
>>43584552Do you really not know or are you being sarcastic?
>>43584489This will never not make me chuckle.
>>43584639I really do not know. I only watched Bionicle in a cursory fashion alongside my son.
Anyone got any ideas for bionicle themed campaigns?
>>43584742>Toa team fighting against the Makuta or Dark Hunters>Matoran trying to survive against the Bohrok on Mata Nui>Bohrok trying to survive long enough to clean up Mata Nui>Glatorian Mad Max>Vahki buddy cop campaign>Skakdi murderhobos
Just fyi, if you guys want to talk lore, here'd probably be the place to do it.Not the skype.
>>43584791>Skakdi murderhobosThis is perfect.
>>43584719Check out the old thread for ore.>>43562585
>>43584791>a group of matoran archivist having to track down an escaped specimen from the archive
>>435847191d4chan has a surprisingly comprehensive article on Bionicle that sums up the series quite well.
I used to think Bionicle were the greatest thing ever... almost 14 years ago.
>>43584791Last thread we had an eclectic Toa Team who were just beginning to investigate a Bohrok Hive. Featured Two of them fighting for leadership and the Ko-Toa becoming a nihilistic pessimist.
>>43585014That's us.My plan is for us to be the "test game".For when we're in a testable state, of course.
>>43584997>implying gen 1 bionicle still isn't the greatest thing ever
It's a pity that Rhotuka were underused as a concept thanks to their toy gimmick status. The actual mechanics for them were pretty interesting. What with how any living being could learn how to create them, and every user had their own unique power.
>>43585040Speaking of, is the whole team here?
>>43585160That plagued much of the story honestly. I still can't forgive them for getting rid of the Kaita concept just because they stopped making them as toys. Also that characters could rebuild themselves if they knew how to. So many neat ideas came from the bare fact that it was all a Lego line, but they barely made use of them.
>>43584489Ah fuck I lold.Jesus that story got ridiculous.
>>43585273It was cool, though. A nice way to tie everything together.
>>43585212I am at least. Trying to remember what my character model used exactly as weapons. I remember swords, but he also had some sort of snowboard because why not.
>>43585453Gonna go full powerlevel here, but I have my character in MoC form already.
>>43585480It's fine.I might end up drawing mine..
>>43585480I do too lol, I'm just not at my house so I can't remember what he looks like.
>>43584791>>Matoran trying to survive against the Bohrok on Mata NuiYES. We 2002 animations now.
>>43585236>tfw the Toa barely ever use their elemental powers for anythingThere's so much potential for cool shit to do with element control. Just look at Avatar. The most we get is them using their elements as glorified laser beams.
>>43585507>>43585509Want me to post mine?(Pls no bully, I like Inika torsos too much.)
>>43585542Probably because a lot of it isn't very kid-friendly.Tahu did melt Nektann's armor where he stood that one time. Jesus fuck.
>>43585542They used them pretty well in the comics. Kopaka basically rode a stream of Ice everywhere.
Y'know as ridiculous as the alternate universe abuse in the serials got sometimes, I always thought that the Melding universe paladin Makuta Teridax was pretty damn cool.
>>43585558Oh god not inika... :P. Original bodies best bodies (not really but I still loved them)
>>43585558Don't worry, this isn't /biog/
Bionicle was the fucking titsEvery thread: http://www.bringbackbionicle.net/games/matanui/mnolg.html
Anybody else used stuff like pipe cleaners to add on to Bionicles? I always liked using them as whips and tentacles and stuff.
>>43585569>>43585567I'm working on a Metru-body version.
>>43585609Try using something else instead of the Bohrok body parts. They look awful. Also get a different mask off of Bricklink, maybe.
>>43585627It's the only brown mask I got. I've been looking for a brown or tan Pakari, maybe a Hau, can't find any though.
>>43585609If I were 13 I'd have so much to say about your part choices and what color parts you should use, but now all I can say is that weapon looks awesome.
>>43585649Yeah, honestly I haven't updated in ages, just too little brown/tan stuff around. The weapon is my favorite part.
>>43585542Oh yeah. Elemental powers, combined with neat mask powers and whichever tool or weapon they have, and they're really underutilized.Think of how nice the movies would have been. Instead, we get:MOL:>everyone brandishes blades but there's no weapon combat because of the anti-violence policy>lame elemental power usage for the same reason>everyone forgot they had mask powersLOMN:>no elemental powers>okay mask power usage, not for fight scenes though>still not much in the way of weapons, at least the bad guys shoot stuffWOS:>very brief hand-to-hand combat, heroes actually smash stuff with their tools>no mask powers>instead of creative shows of elemental power, they shoot spinnersTLR:>actual combat but it's lame as fuck, no choreography>demonstrations of elemental power are just them blasting a jet of fire or water>no masks yet again apart from the Mask of LifeAnd lets not get into how the reboot webisodes handle action.
>>43585627Found the mask I needed on bricklink, thanks.
>>43585761What's it look like?
>>43585212I am, and in the chat. I might track down my model later.
Just remembered my weapon, pretty sure I used those Vahki staffs that looked kinda like swords (the Bordahk ones). I attacked 2 together and used it as a double bladed sword iirc. I could take them off and use them as a pretty nice board too.
>>43585834Brown Pakari-style is what I'm thinking of.Also, how do you make heads fit on a metru-model and not look long-necked or hunchbacked?
>>43585707The movies were mainstream things aimed at kids, so they were handled in the same fucktarded way most kids movies are. The comics and books tended to be better about that stuff.TLR is also objectively awful and needs to be set on fire.
Mmmmm my childhood. I remember when the borohk -kal first appeared. Watching the animated commercials for each was fucking fantabulous.
>>43585707The lack of powers in LoMN was kind of justified in that the Toa Metru had used up almost all their elemental energy fighting the Morbuzakh and Krahka and it takes a while to recharge. For some reason this is never explained in the movie itself, but it's mentioned in the books a few times.
>>43586889I remember being confused as all hell with the Metru Nui comics. They're fighting these weird sentient vines but after they kill the not!Gravemind or whatever it's never mentioned again. Also apparently one of the Matoran betrayed them but I don't remember how. I also remember not liking the movie that much, or any of the movies really. They all felt just so soulless; cheap mercenary endeavors just trying to cash in on the name. A far cry from those kickass interactive games. Fucking Myst for kids, those were.
>tfw sold all your Bionicles except Pohatu and Lewa years ago at a garage sale>tfw you'll never buy a mask pack againholy fuck I regret not keeping all the masks I had
>>43586944That game was pretty shitty IMO. It was just a tedious grindfest riddled with bugs and soulless NPCs. The first game was fantastic.>>43587143You should consider starting up your collection again. http://bricklink.com/ is really useful for this.
Irregular reminder that G1 was misdeveloped hard.
>>43587158I wish I could buy individual masks though. Gen 1-4 masks of all the off-colors are what I really liked, and the Bohrok brain-masks.
>>43587350You can. There's plenty of people selling them on there.
>>43584194>that dice systemWhy don't you just use dicepools? Do you really want these huge steps between X*5-1 and X*5 attribute values?Picrelated, vertical axis is probability to roll at least X (horizontal axis).
We probably should ask /toy/ bionicle threads for lore image dump.
>>43587968>3000 kmSo, if he is stand on the ground, his head is almost in space and he can barely see what is going on around his feet because of clouds. Also making huge craters with each step.I have only one question. Why?
>>43588025Because it's Bonkle worldbuilding, that's why.
>>43588025Because Great Beings, that's why.
>>43588025Apparently he was mostly in space anyway. And the planet he was on was made entirely of nothing but ocean.Only time he would have to watch where he step was on the glatoran planet which was also huge.
>>43588025Why not.Sometimes you just have to build laws of physics defying mecha
Toa Kopaka Nuva > Takanuva Perfected > Toa Iruini > Toa Vakama > Toa Lewa > Toa Lhikan > Your Favorite Toa>tfw I once got shitfaced and recited pretty much all of the significant chunks of Bionicle lore up to the Mistika/Phantoka legends in dramatic Turaga Vakama-fashion to some friends over the course of several hours. One of the better drinking occasions I've had.I might be a little biased, but not just for a kid's story, the lore is incredible and has one of the world is wonderfully rich.Toa Metru arc was the best. Hordika had great villains, but edgy Vakama got on my nerves too much.Bohrok-Kal were patrician as fuck.Inika were breddy cool and I liked how bleak Voya Nui was, but the designs were just a little too out there for me.Mahri were neat, and the arc was cool, but it just didn't have the same sense of wonder as a physical island. In terms of criminally untapped fluff fodder, the Toa Hagah (and their contemporaries) & Brotherhood Wars could've been GOAT.>tfw you will never be a Dark Hunter>Roodaka will NEVER step on your ballsBeing Matoran is suffering.
>>43585707>>no mask powersMuh Hordika venom
Man I fucking love Bionicle
>>43586944Yeah, the Morbuzakh was created by Makuta Teridax to make all of the Matoran paranoid and more likely to accept his increasingly authoritarian police state. Prophecy said that the Great Disks could defeat the Morbuzakh, but only one Matoran from each district knew where a Disk was. And of course Nidhiki and Krekka were trying to stop the Toa Metru along the way. That mini-arc was actually one of the reasons I like 2004 the best, since the Metru Nui Matoran came off pretty much as normal people suddenly thrust into positions of danger and importance. Most of them were scared, many were unhelpful, and some were only in it for the glory. Even Ahkmou, the Po-Matoran who was actually working for Nidhiki, wasn't really "evil" - what would you do if a giant mutant assassin suddenly showed up in front of you, promising great rewards in return for an artifact of power and making unsettling implications about what would happen if you refused? The prototype to the Morbuzakh, named Karzahni in honor of the devil-figure of Matoran legend, also showed up a couple times later on. When the Toa Metru were traveling back to Metru Nui to rescue all the Matoran they originally left behind, Karzahni helped cure Nokama of a poisoned wound in exchange for some energized protodermis (which nearly killed him). Later on Vakama runs into him again, Karzahni tells him about the Order of Mata Nui and their extensive ruse to get Vakama & co. chosen as Toa, and promptly got killed by Teridax.
>>43589290>Even Ahkmou, the Po-Matoran who was actually working for Nidhiki, wasn't really "evil"Yeah, nah. Ahkmou was a total cunt.
>>43589290Also fucking robot cyberpunk city
>>43589290>the Morbuzakh was created by Makuta Teridax to make all of the Matoran paranoid and more likely to accept his increasingly authoritarian police stateKinda sometimes wish politics worked this way irl desu
>>43587968Wut. This guy was a thing? I pretty much tuned out of Bionicle when they kept rehashing the Bohrok into those fancy new silver schemes. Gen 1 Toa ftw! The Vakshi were pretty cool.
>>43587799The large difference in power between ability scores is intentional. A single Toa should be able to take on a horde of Matoran, for example. The system is also primarily designed for Matoran campaigns, where you would be rolling 2d6+(modifier*2) in most situations.
>>43589749Yes. This is Mata Nui's original body, and his face was the setting for the longest time.
>>43586944>>43587158MNOLG is the shit. It got pretty dark, too.>Makuta’s speech was particularly significant coming after the events of September 11, 2001. Templar Studios, who created the game for The LEGO Group, is located in lower Manhattan. Many of the employees were at the studio or on their way there when the tragedy, visible from their rooftop, occurred.
Did anyone else like making new Rahi? I did it all the time.
>>43589544Metru Nui was tops.
>>43588407>that listBut my favorite Toa is Vanilla KopakaAlso >rating Vakama over any of the original team members
>>43592053Noob Vakama was great. Dude forged the Vahi and solo'd Makuta (mostly). Pohatu exists too. "muh kick" and "muh rocks" were stupid and his whole character existed to make Onua look cool.
>>43592130>implying Bronua needed anyone to make him look cool. Vakama was mostly just whiny. I honestly wasn't a big fan of the characterization of the Toa Metru. Nuju was just Diet Coke K-dog, and Nokama existed solely to pat Vakama on the back when things got hard. The rest were basically devoid of personality. Unlike the original team, who were all very distinct in how they acted.
>>43592203>devoid in personalityI enjoyed how Onewa could be a massive jackass though.
>>43592462Yeah but that was a role I felt was much better filled by Tahu in the previous gen.
>>43592203>Unlike the original team, who were all very distinct in how they acted. The Mata's personalities were practically defined by their elements, the Metru's were more rooted in their occupation. I liked that instead of being total rehashes, they had traits that differentiated them from the Mata, even if they shared some traits. They just weren't as memorable (whiny Vakama aside) or "classic".The Inika/Mahri had it worse, since by that time they were really running out of interesting personalities, but at least they didn't have to go through the same "learn to work together" phase as the rest since most of them already considered each other bros.
>>43586944>They all felt just so soulless; cheap mercenary endeavors just trying to cash in on the name. After seeing The Legend Reborn and the later Hero Factory show, I personally have developed a newfound appreciation for the original trilogy. Incredibly flawed movies, yet I really enjoy their production values, the art design, music, sound effects and shit. That's where all the effort went.I can rewatch them almost endlessly, whereas I can never get through TLR in one go. It doesn't even have as many amusing CGI fuckups as the other three, which are fun to pick out.
>>43593249>The Mata's personalities were practically defined by their elementsPerhaps, but I still felt like they played off each other much better. Each Toa had his or her own special relationship and perspective with the others. Tahu was constantly at odds with Kopaka, but the two had a high level of professional respect for each other. Onua got along with everyone but was particularly close with Pohatu and Lewa. Pohatu was the only one able to form what felt like a genuine friendship with Kopaka. Gali had her back and forths with Tahu. Kopaka liked Gali well enough but preferred to avoid her because she was the only one (except maybe Onua) who saw past his icy attitude and knew his sincere compassion and altruism. I never got that with the Metru (or any other team, really). Vakama and Nokama were fairly close, but beyond that they all treated each other the same.
>>43593917Yeah, relationships were really lacking in the later years, instead we got heroes spouting lame one-liners.The Mahri saga did have a hint of it, with Jaller not knowing what to make of Matoro practically taking over as a leader figure, but they got over it in like a paragraph. Gotta move the plot, have more action and devote every second line of dialogue to nihilistic sarcasm!
>>43594072Wasn't there also supposed to be some kind of implied romantic tension between Jaller and Hahli?
>>43594109Yes but nothing ever came out of it. It was around that time that they phased out romance from the story.
>>43585542I thought that was kind of cool. But I like rarely used magic in settings.
Bump for interest.
>>43593249the inika were all matoran that we knew and loved from throughout the series, they arguably had the most fleshed out personalities.
>>43596540RIP Matoro, godspeed you glorious icy bastard.
>there was never a Toa Team based on the Chronicler's CompanyIt's really a shame, since that would have been downright hilarious.>total space cadet Fire Toa>gung-ho Water Toa>patrician Stone Toa>sensible Air Toa scared of heights>lovable but not too bright Earth Toa>quieter than usual Ice ToaI'm just saying, I'd totally want to run/be in that campaign.
>>43596540But they didn't have much in the way of distinct personalities after becoming Toa, apart from Matoro who got the biggest focus. Most of them were basically generic action heroes with not much in the way of personality traits that would have set them apart from your average Toa.
>>43597093fuck, now i have to play it.
I don't know shit about RPG mechanics. I don't know whit about balance. I can't write for shit and I've forgotten all but the most significant Bionicle lore. But I want to thank you anons and namefags. You're doing god's work.
>>43597855You can always feel free to sound off on what sounds good or raise any questions, man.
I remember the good ol' Bionicle. Apparently they have a new Bionicle now, which is a sort of reboot. It's literally the AoE of Warhammer fantasy
Why not use an already existing system like BRP to streamline thing?
>>43598255The guys want a dedicated system, and who's to blame them. They're having fun. I eagerly await the finished product, and I'd help if I had any idea what I'm doing.
>>43598739There's a Google doc in the OP.
>>43596912Oh man, I remember reading the comic of that. That shit was great.
>>43588025>>3000 kmIt's not even that much anymore, that stat was just used for the initial concept. In the actual lore, he's over 12 000 km tall.No one really knows why they changed it, since if you go by his depiction in media and compare him to the measurements of the island, 3000 km would seem to fit better.

I thought there already was a Bionicle RPG? Namely, PDF related
>>43585603got any pics? First I've heard of this
>>43603823First I've heard of it. Plus, we want there to be a Toa option.

Most of what you'll find just looks like something a weaboo doodled in his notebook when he should have been paying attention in math class (in fact, given a lot of it are scans that's probably exactly what happened). I found this one not too long ago though. Not bad.
>>43606384Jesus, that axe is fucking painful to look at.

>>43603497 Voted no, but that doesn't mean the comic wasn't awesome.

Someone should scan a bunch of the parts and turn them into 3d models. Imagine 3d printing just a bunch of pieces/whole bionicles for dirt cheap. You could either spend a bit more to get the full color-range, or glorious solid black/gold/white versions of people.
>>43618308Wouldn't they snap ridiculously easily though?
>>43618308People already 3D print masks. But LEGO parts have to be super precise, so the print resolution would have to be extremely small for any connectors. And don't even dream of making a ball joint.
>>43618409They would. There is a reason why Legos are so expensive, and that reason is that they are SUPER high quality products, and they got extremely strict quality standard regarding their products.A 3d printed lego would be weak and brittle as fuck in comparison.
>>43618498>SUPER high quality products, and they got extremely strict quality standardExcept for the dark age of 2007-2010. All those broken joints...
>>43621236Remember when they gave used actual fists instead of the usual socket piece?I think I have a grand total of one fist still in one piece.
>>43621302I think all of mine are still intact, because I never dared to take them apart (which is I presume not something Lego ever intended its customers to be scared of doing). But I do have numerous other rectangular sockets that broke, as well as the infamous lime ones.
>>43613070>tfw no movie about MataAlways felt weird that the first Bonkle movie was about the story's third year, then two and three were a prequel and a shoehorned-in interquel respectively, and neither focused on the Toa team that most people would be familiar with. Technically the first didn't either.
>>43624035There was supposed to be one, but it failed at some point of the production, just like a lot of other early bionicle media did. There were stuff like a Toa Mata video game in the works, and even a TV series.
>>43624157Yeah, heard about some of those. Though it sucks that we never got one, maybe it's for the better, since they were still testing waters at the time and Lego themselves didn't quite know what Bionicle should be like.I know there were fans who wanted to do a 2001 adaptation but they never succeeded due to various reasons.
>>43606255Really don't like these revisualizations. They just don't look right with flesh.
>>43621236>Except for the dark age of 2007-2010And 2010-2015. The switch to Chinese plastics made Lego bricks feel and act cheap.>>43624157I've got an early Bionicle game for GBA but I can't recall the title. It was brutally difficult as a child, haven't tried it in years though
>>43587968Holy shit, Mata Nui was confirmed for giant robot in 2001?!
>>43627943Much earlier. The giant robot was the base concept they built the rest of the story around.
>>43627943>>43629039The whole idea for that was from Christian Faber. He had some sort of severe illness, and based Bionicle off the train of thought that there were little warrior guys in his meds who would fight off his disease. Which incidentally is why the canisters are pill-shaped.The best part about all this is that in retrospect, having Bionicle stand for "Biological Chronicle" was a dead giveaway.
>>43627943>>43629039Yep.(That little 99 under Faber's signature? The yearly timestamp. That pic is from 1999.)
>>43621353>tfw as a kid I took apart some of my sets when I played because 'battle damage'>one of my biggest never got rebuilt because he was so complex in the way of parts>>43629389I never knew it stood for Biological Chronicle. Still pretty crazy that Mata Nui is a giant robot who became a planet just so that he could get healed of his sickness, more or less.I wish there was more of a mix of biomechanical and natural universes. I love natural stuff, but mixing it with biomechanical stuff sounds interesting
>>43629464>I love natural stuff, but mixing it with biomechanical stuff sounds interestingThat was one of the things I couldn't get enough of. Making robotic/cyborg characters have to get along in a purely natural world is criminally underutilized.
>>43629564Do you have any more cool art like that? I love what it's describing.
>>43630498Kinda? There's some pretty weird concept art of Bonkle out there, but it's a pretty mixed bag. Especially since that one is from 1999, which is before anyone knew what they were doing.I'll just dump some more. Here's some art that connects the Matoran to the Bohrok--another idea that was around from the start.
>>43631398A more in-depth look at Visorak webbing.
>>43630498Christian Faber has been sharing lots of early concept artwork and general promotional images over at his blog Faber Files. Sadly not everything -- he said some time ago that he's found an old stack of really early concept material, but he stopped uploading it because he's busy with other work.It would be really nice if we not only got all this neat concept art stuff, but also high res versions of all promo artwork that came out during the line's run. There's still some pics we only have low quality versions of, and there's no way of knowing what we might have missed out on -- for example a bunch of never before seen, good quality 2002 Toa Nuva CG renders only surfaced last year or so when someone shared the contents of two Bionicle style guide CDs.
>>43631461>>43631602Biomedia Project actually has quite a bit of of this kind of thing. Like, it's an almost 2 GB folder full of concept art, CG renders, etc.
>>43631964Remember when golden masks used to MEAN something
>>43631892>>43631879These seem a lot more intense than the content I remember
>>43632005Remember when gold and silver were special colors? Didn't really last long, come to think of it.
>>43631964Man everything about Gali's design was awesome. Only K-dog had more style
>>43632504It's concept art.
>>43632948I don't think gold was actually overused. It showed up in like 1-2 sets per year on average, and usually only in relatively "special" ones (Takanuva, Lhikan, etc.). Silver, on the other hand, was in practically every set from '03 through '08.
Bump and a query? What is the best issue of the comic run and why is it Divided We Fall?Anyone know if there's an archive I can get at to read them?My issues are all at home in my longboxes.
>>43636934http://biomediaproject.com/bmp/comics/Rule of thumb, if there's Bionicle stuff you wanna look up, be it videos, online games or comics, check the BioMedia Project.Although I don't know whether they have all the comics, like those that were exclusively made for the graphic novels.
>>43638115Great! Much obliged.I actually have the Brickmaster archive disc which was fantastic, but that's at my grandparents'C'est la vie
>>43635015You're right, I was probably thinking of 2006 with regards to the gold, which was a year when it became a secondary color for more sets than usual. It wasn't as overused normally.
One thing the reboot excels at is making such nice looking art pieces like the "Month of..." pictures. They're an interesting break from the CGI renders we've been used to and they add some desperately needed imagery to the new world they're trying to build up. It's just too bad they're only put out on Facebook instead of having a bigger presence in media, and they only show the Toa chilling around. Which it not bad in and of itself, but some story-relevant pieces done in the same style would be great.
