>Years ago, when Ghouls first started showing up in tens and hundreds, many religious types took them for the demons of biblical lore, and reckoned that the end times were upon us all.>Most folk just found them eerie and off-putting on sight, what with their claws and their fangs, their horns and their gleaming eyeballs and all those psychedelic colors.>They'd said they'd come because the neon nightmare they called home had gotten wrecked and that they needed someplace to crash for just a little while to give them time to regroup and recuperate.>Lots of people didn't want them to stay, and were of the opinion that they ought to just pack up and shuffle on off to the next world down the line and leave us be, that we didn't need their kind around spooking the bejesus out of us.>In the end though, just as many bleeding hearts took pity on those interdimensional refugees and built up enough good PR to make giving them the boot more or less impossible.>Nowadays, there's thousands and thousands of Ghouls all across the country, and you're more likely to see them on the beach or behind the register at the local gas-and-go than on the news.>Folk have gotten used to those creepy grins and rainbow skins of theirs, and they've acclimated well to our way of life, learning our language and taking on human names.>Whatever it was that happened to their home remains a mystery though, and what little quirks and oddities of their own culture they've retained they don't commonly explain to anyone.>In the end, doomsday still hasn't come, despite what some preachermen said, and life returned to normal, or almost normal, surprisingly quickly all things considered.>It's funny, really.
>>42006676Is this a plot idea? Sounds boring. Truly, it's a good try, but it's just an average migration situation. Change 'Ghouls' with any ethnic group and you have the same plot.
>>42006676Hell, I'd hit it.
>>42006724I'm presuming that this is just the settng set up, and that the real plot comes into play later.>Things have slowly and almost imperceptibly grown more surreal and magical since the Ghouls arrived.>The Ghouls have seemed almost too eager to abandon most of their native culture and replace it with our own.>No one knows what exactly happened to the Ghoul's original world, and whether or not it will happen to our own.
>>42006945Is pretty more or less right. The arrival of the Ghouls, their integration into society and their eventual acceptance is just a basic setting premise. I like threads that start off with a simple idea that gets brainstormed and embellished, so I thought I'd start one myself to see where it went.
>>42006676I need to see more of these ghouls and their beach fashion... For research.
>>42007397>Some have speculated that the Ghouls' original homeland may have been composed of tropical islands, given their preference for warmer climates and apparent love of the sea.>Many if not most Ghouls fortunate enough to live close to the shore are frequent visitors to beaches and oceanside parks where they engage in all the standard activities that human beachgoers enjoy.>The deeper a Ghoul tans, the more vibrant their skin coloration grows and the clearer their markings become.
>>42007532>Many scientists have flocked to the more popular ghoul beaches, claiming the study of these markings is of the utmost importance to the future of the human race>They don't know how right they are.
What food source is sustaining a ghoul population of this size? Are ghouls not limited to feeding off corpses anymore?
>>42007604I think the term "ghoul" is being used generically here, and isn't referring to a particular, preexisting creature.>While Ghouls are mostly carnivorous as their teeth and claws would suggest, they are also known to be incredibly fond of fruit, the sweeter the better.>Surfing has become a favorite pastime amongst the Ghouls, and one of the few remarks that they have made about where they came from is that they never had anything like it back home.>Many Ghouls exhibit broken horns, missing tusks or some other variety of minor disfigurement aquired sometime before their exodus, the explanation of which they steadfastly remain silent on.
>>42007750>>42007600>>42007532>>42007397>Beach bum Ghouls with a secretive past and a role to play in Earth's future.Alright, not bad.
>>42007913>While Ghouls do not seem to be incredibly materialistic by nature, they do however appear to have an affinity for shiny baubles and colorful clothing.>Many who know Ghouls personally have said that their reluctance to talk about their homeland and the circumstances of their exodus comes not from a desire for secrecy but from an extreme "live in the now!" ethos and the vaguest hint of of worry.>Despite their somewhat fearsome appearance, few Ghouls enter into professions in which their intimidation factors become an asset.
I'd be obsessed with trying to find out what this 'neon nightmare' that wrecked their home world. Was it real? Why didn't it follow them? Or was it just a scam so they could integrate themselves into humanity through conspiracy.
>>42008860That's would be the big question, wouldn't it? Sure the Ghouls seem to be nice enough folks, but the secrecy they maintain about their original culture and their evasiveness about what exactly happened to their own world raises a lot of questions that keep a good number of people from really trusting them. Some options I like:They are the advance scouts of a massive interdimensional invasion force sent to reconnoiter Earth that may have gone native or deserted. They're afraid that whatever it was that had destroyed their home will eventually come for earth as well but don't know what to do about it.Their presence on earth has slowly and subtly changed the very nature of reality, causing surreal and magical happenstances to occur with increasing regularity.
>>42008860>>42009029Or they could just be mostly harmless, interdimensional hippy freeloaders.
>>42009054That would be boring though
>They are the advance scouts of a massive interdimensional invasion force sent to reconnoiter Earth that may have gone native or deserted.>They're afraid that whatever it was that had destroyed their home will eventually come for earth as well but don't know what to do about it.>Their presence on earth has slowly and subtly changed the very nature of reality, causing surreal and magical happenstances to occur with increasing regularity. All of those sound really fun, although the first is probably the easiest to create some kind of plot around.
How long have the Ghouls been on Earth? It has to be long enough for them to integrate themselves into our society and gain some measure of acceptance amongst us, but short enough that the fear and distrust of them and their shady past hasn't yet faded completely from public memory.
>>42009152I don't know if this is exaggeration or creepypasta. Googling Johannesburg, it doesn't seem quite so incredibly fucked, but I'm curious. Is there more like this out there?
>>42009297According to my friend who emigrated from SA, it is absolutely true. If you google something like "johannesburg abandoned buildings" you'll get a lot of news articles and such, but they're all bizarrely whitewashed. They imply the economic problems were brought on by "white flight", and say that the squatters only moved into buildings after they were abandoned. It was the other way around, the gangs of squatters took over neighborhoods and public buildings, and basically chased everybody out.
>>42009233You could combine the second and third into a single plot, where the rise in surreal magic is one of the signs that whatever metaphysical catastrophe destroyed their home is coming for earth next.
>>42009801Or first and third, with the rise in magic leading to less and less separation between differen worlds/planes, thus paving the way for the invasion army, if you want them more as disguised hostiles/sleeper agents.
I like the idea of the ghouls, but what about other races? On sci-fi idea is that FTL travel is impossible, but teleportation between planets with strong electromagnetic fields. Earth has one, and the Ghoul world has one. Or just make them from a different dimension.>>42009029So if you touch a Ghoul this affects you to? Can we call Wizards Ghoul Fuckers?
>>42009885Okay, so the Ghouls were sent to earth during some sort of magically significant convergence as the sleeper agents and forward scouts of a vast and baffling army of demons, daemons, spirits, spooks and haunts. Their cover story was that they were refugees from a great cataclysm that destroyed their world, leaving them no choice but to hop to the plane next door in search of a new home. However, the next magical convergence was years down the road, and in that time the majority of Ghouls had gone native, enjoying their new lives and their new world too much to go through with their part in the invasion plan. Those in charge came to a decision that they would not report back when the time came, would not open the portals for their armies during the magical convergence event and would live out the rest of their days enjoying the sun and the surf. However, with the convergence event coming, someone has been going around killing the Ghoul leaders, a loyalist who is stealing the magical mcguffins needed to open the portals, intent on seeing their original mission through to the end.
>>42010112That could be fun. At the start just normal investigation, later maybe mix in some true detective/call of cthulhu and other weirdness.
>>42010142Yeah. You could even start it off in an almost slice-of-life fashion, at the point at which Humans have learned to coexist with Ghouls and accept them into their neighborhoods. The PCs go to beach bashes with them, maybe befriend the short little blue one with the antelope horns and the cheery grin that works the cash register at the local convenience store. Then, their friendly neighborhood Ghoul is murdered in cold blood, shocking the entire community. As her friends, the PCs get involved with the investigation and maybe they discovered that she left them a cryptic message beforehand. Maybe she even sends them a strange Ghoulish trinket with instructions to hide it or flee with it someplace far away.
>>42010112Maybe an anti-ghoul zealot discovers the truth, and the hapless ghouls are stuck trying to explain that, okay, sure, we were supposed to invade you guys, but we decided we'd rather chill out and eat some fruit, alright? And go surfing.
>You get a phone call from one of your friends>They're asking if they can have that video game back that you borrowed from them>You decide to go over to their place and return it, and maybe hang out for awhile>You're shocked to learn that your friend now has an eerie smile, bright yellow skin, and large horns>Your friend was a human, not a ghoul>But he laughs off your confusion, he says he's always been a ghoul, ever since you met a few years ago>You ask him if he was wearing a human disguise>"Man, are you okay? Human disguise? What are you talking about?">You leave, and ask others about what happened>They say that your friend has always been a ghoul, you're just being weird>Come to think of it, was that woman at the front desk of your work place always a ghoul too? What do you do?
>>42010337Admire just how colourful my skin's seemed lately. And two spots on my head itch a bit.
>>42010468See, when I get those weird itches on my head, I like to go surfing.
>>42010337>Make a list of everyone you can think of, friends, coworkers, celebrities, noting their Human or Ghoul status as I know it.>Go to the doctor's and get a check up from the neck up just incase I'm going crazy or have an aneurism or something.>Keep referencing my list in the days and weeks to come to see if anyone else I know of spontaneously becomes a Ghoul.
>>42010517Me too, right? Even better, my town has a produce market near the beach. Nothing like soaking up some rays while chowing down on fresh mangos.
>A small group of humans is going on and on about "ghoulification">The majority of the country considers them crackpots and racists >"My father was always a ghoul, you assholes!"
I'm putting a pin in this. This would make an interesting setting to run with nWoD or CoC
I like to think that the Ghouls, like a Mantis Shrimp, have WAY more color receptive cones in their eyes than humans do. We think they're colorful, but they can see colors we can't even conceive of.
>>42010612Hmm. On that note, can ghouls reproduce with humans? Can you have hybrids? Also, I have to say, it seems unlikely that governments around the world would just accept the ghouls' secrecy about the disaster that claimed their homeworld, especially before letting them settle down. That seems like something some ghouls might get thrown in jail for withholding or, in some parts of the world, possibly even tortured. And even aside from that prominent ghouls would constantly be asked about it in interviews. Journalists would never let up on a mystery that big and juicy. So, if I may, I propose that while ghouls don't like talking about it, they HAVE given testimony to various officials when pressed. The problem is that their explanations about the "neon nightmare" are largely nonsensical to humans, and the ghouls don't get this. They end up sounding like someone trying to explain LSD dream logic. Eventually government officials and news reporters put together some of it and presented it as the official view of things and the ghouls were all "Yeah, okay, whatever man. Let's all go catch some waves." There may be some... inconsistencies as a result of this.
>>42010550This is getting a little too "invasion of the bodysnatchers" and openly "ghouls are trying to take over."Perhaps spontaneous ghoulification is but one of many weird, surreal magical effects that have started since they arrived, but it's relatively uncommon. It's not an epidemic, more of an occasional occurrence.
>>42010665Right, I like this. Although they closely resemble humans in their basic appearance, their physiology is also markedly different than ours in several ways.
>>42010791>>42010764See, I like this logic. The world that the ghouls came from is so different from our own that it's nigh impossible to actually describe, and magical ripple effects, such as ghoulification and memory changing, just sort of happens every once in awhile.
>>42010764I think that's a good way to go about it. Maybe people just think that the "neon nightmare" was some hallucinogenic plant or spore rather than a real bizzarre monstrosity.
>>42009885>>42009801If we're doing combinations, first and second combined means that they are actually unwilling scouts, perhaps serving as focii for some kind of observation technology.
>>42010791Oh yeah, agreed. I was just answering the question Anon posed for fun. I much prefer the sleeper-agent angle if we're going the invasion route.
>>42007532> In rare cases ghouls have their skin become darker as they tan, until it turns pitch black. They markings not only become much more clearer but also brightly shiny, like a lightsaber.> Their homeland was referenced as "neon nightmare", this could reference with the above mentioned to some kind of eldritch plague.
>>42010835Maybe a subtle effective of the magic from their world causes people to be less inclined to question them.
>>42010612>/pol/ is right
>>42010764I could see ghoul/human children, if they can even breed together, as something like.>The child is born human, but slowly over time transforms into a full on ghoul, kind of like a Deep One>The child stays as a weird hybrid of sorts, and at the point of adulthood, a subconscious decision is made as to if the child prefers humanity or ghoulality better, then fully transforms into human or ghoul (in rare cases, they will stay hybrids by subconscious choice)>Basic human with leathery, bright colored skin and tiny horns
>>42010764This is a very smart way to go about it.
>>42010871>"Mom, why do I have a horn now?">"That's nice, dear."
I imagine that when a ghoul goes to an intense rave club (by human standards) they just sort of laugh to themselves about it. It's like watching a child showing off their lego city. It's certainly neat, but it's nothing compared to the Neon Nightmare.
>>42010665Maybe this is also one of the weird, surreal effects that crops up: new colors. Some people can see them, some can't, and nobody can decide what to call them. And when I say "some people" I don't mean half-ghouls or people turning into ghouls. I mean normal people. It's almost as if these colors have... escaped out into the wild.
>>42011019Oh now this is good.>A human "modern-artist" creates a painting entirely out of new colors >Most people don't see anything/see the image in normal colors, and don't see what all the fuss is about>Shenanigans in the art community ensues.
>>42011019Maybe make it completely erratic then? Some can see some of them, but not others. Some only see them when drunk, or tired, or not tired, or while having headaches, or with ideal blood sugar not while hyper- or hypoglycated.
Something tells me that after the ghouls settle in, humans end up having dreams like video related a bit more often than usual.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5_K4axvtdk
What other beings or animals did the Ghouls bring with them? What about technology.
>>42011227I imagine they wouldn't bring their things so much as they would just sort of appear. The Ghouls responding to their appearance as "oh hey, how'd that end up here?"
I could imagine that their homeworld, the "Neon Nightmare is very much like a tropical island-themed Tir Na Nog or Faerieland. It's a realm where the reality is in a constant state of flux, where wild magic and impossible creatures run rampant, painted in colors that shouldn't exist and where life might be very dangerous even for the Ghouls who grew up there. All this might actually be one of the reasons that the Ghouls like Earth so much, and why they might be willing to betray their kin for the chance to stay and save the planet. Compared to the madness of their homeworld, life on Earth is relatively easy, simple, and predictable. Their worries here are so few and far between that it seems almost like a paradise to them. Also, if we portray Ghouls as fae creatures, the inherent weirdness of their world and inside them could explain their inability to explain their position to the government and why things in Earh have gotten stranger since they arrived.
Would human drugs have any effect on ghouls?
>>42011349No. But non-drug foodstuffs might. Peppermint as a hallucinogenic for ghouls?
>>42011227>>42011271A botanist in South America is cataloging new plant species in the Amazon. One evening, as they return to camp, they notice a strange light in the bushes. They discover a plant that glows in the dark and bears large, bulbous fruit with a color like iridescent glass. This discovery quickly blows up in the news. The ghouls reaction is "Oh hey, cool, those things showed up!" Once the plants are confirmed to be harmless, ghouls start importing them to make fruit cocktails.
Here's a question: Do the ghouls have a language of their own, and if so what does it sound like? What words or idioms from this language have made it into English as the ghouls have integrated?
>>42011227If they really are refugees, or wanted to make their refugee cover story convincing, they may have brought with them all those things that you sometimes see real refugees bring with them:>Portable keepsakes and family momentos>Cherished pets or food animals>Foodstuffs like fruit and the seeds inside>Clothing>Easily carried musical instruments>Small games and toys>Holy or magic relics and artifactsAny or all of this could be left with the Ghouls, confiscated by the government, or bought up by collectors in varying degrees. Some could later prove to be problematic, like seeds from a Ghoulish fruit growing into a giant tree in a matter of days.
>>42011397>strung-out junkie Ghouls buying mint gum by the bag fullI'd allow it.
>>42011426Farmers need to start hiring ghouls to help them grow these fruits more efficiently because they follow strange and obscure growing patterns that only make initial sense to ghouls.
>>42011448Plants and animals would almost certainly be confiscated. Invasive species are a nightmare in the real world, imagine if you threw bizarre, unpredictable, alien invasive species into the mix.
>>42011442If we go with the idea that Ghouls are very secretive about their native culture, it could be that their language is only spoken amongst other Ghouls.I imagine though that hearing Ghoul-speak is a very synesthesiac experience.
>>42011442Maybe something like this?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8FZTqpRU7g
When the ghouls came over to our world from the Neon Nightmare, would it be possible for some of our humans to accidentally get sent to the Neon Nightmare also?
>>42006676>libs be like>muh equal rights given to ghoulsSounds like ISIS can give the gays some peace in this universe.
>>42011578That's an interesting idea. Maybe Humans trapped in the Neon Nightmare and trying to return are what could precipitate a potential doomsday or invasion plotline.
>>42011531Some would leak out, surely.Even then, ghouls might try to use English to express their own idioms, which might come out sounding sort of strange.
>>42011610What if the humans sent to the Neon Nightmare eventually found out how to get to Earth, but they lack the understanding of world traveling to do it with grace.Like, if the ghouls came to Earth by opening a door just wide enough for them to squeeze into, the humans would be throwing the door wide open and leaving plenty of room for anyone else who wants to tag along.
>>42011631You're right.>>42011610It might be too heavy handed and dumb, but you could go the route that the Ghoulish Sleepers betrayed their kind to stay on Earth and prevent the invasion while the trapped Humans betrayed their people to return to Earth, bringing the invasion with them.
>>42011682>It might be too heavy handed and dumb, but you could go the route that the Ghoulish Sleepers betrayed their kind to stay on Earth and prevent the invasion while the trapped Humans betrayed their people to return to Earth, bringing the invasion with them.Ehhhhhhhhh...
>>42011722Yeah, I thought it was cheesy when I wrote it, but at least I've gotten it out of my system.
>Ghouls reading up on human history>Reactions always somewhere between "whaaaaaat?" and "pfffffftt, that's weird but okay.">When asked why human history is so strange to them, they say that it just doesn't read like ghoul history does>Of course, they don't explain what ghoul history is
>>42011062Ghouls are obsessive about certain forms of art that seem completely utterly unremarkable to humans. Certain songs, or paintings, or movies, ghouls just can't see to get enough of, because they are hearing and seeing things humans cannot. Likewise, ghoul artists produce things that other ghouls love, but when humans don't get.Like, for example, a white canvas with many barely perceptible patterns of white done in different kinds of white paint made from different ingredients. To humans, it's all just white. To the ghouls, it's a riot of color.
>>42011823>Like, for example, a white canvas with many barely perceptible patterns of white done in different kinds of white paint made from different ingredients. To humans, it's all just white. To the ghouls, it's a riot of color.I think that's a little extreme, but it's close. It would probably just be a rather mundane, nothing special painting, that has a ton of extra detail and color to ghouls. Kind of like how flowers are bright and pretty to humans, but even brighter and more nuts on certain spectrums.
>>42011789Personally, I prefer to think the Neon Nightmare WASN'T something the ghouls created. It was just an unfortunate byproduct of their world, or a force from somewhere even further still....hold up. Okay, let me test this out. What if the "dimension" ghouls are from is the collective unconscious of humankind, and the "neon nightmare" was the result of our changing culture. Like, They're the 60s and 70s, and the 80s and 90s made them unwelcome, so they took refuge in the real world.
>>42006676So what? They're still ugly as all shit!
Could a human baby suffer from ghoulification before birth, resulting in a very confused mother and father.
>>42011902Man, talk about shit taste. Have you seen some of those ghoul chicks? 10/10, all the way.
>>42011809>"So wait, there were a bunch of humans who basically went 'Nah, we don't wanna listen to your guy talk to our invisible friend in the sky, so we're going to a continent that's full of stuff we don't understand and where lots of us will probably die, just so we can get a different guy to talk to our invisible friend'?">"That's kind of a gross under exaggeration, but.. I kind of guess..?">"Pffft, that's so weird. You humans are just so weird! Ghoul history makes so much more since.">"Okay, then tell me about it.">"Man, I don't think you could understand it.">"Come on! You keep calling our history 'silly' or 'ridicules' so what's Ghoul history like?">"Okay, I'll tell you, but I'm going to need a shitload of peppermint gum. None of that tutti-fruit shit."
>>42011959Their teeth are shit and they don't stop smiling. Ever.
>>42011995That's a pretty small detail to have such a hangup over.
"Mommy, there's a monster under my bed!">"Timmy, just chill out, I just need a place to crash for the night.""Get out of my house!">"It's not your house Timmy, I know your mom pays the rent, don't lie to me."
>>42012009You, sir, have shit shit taste. The face is the most important thing for me, in (or rather on) a girl.

I'm really liking the characterization of Ghouls as being friendly in their demeanor and easygoing in their temperament, but still inscrutable in their thought processes and slightly mysterious when questions of their history or culture arise.
How easy is to for Ghouls to learn how to drive? Is it a breeze for them or are they crashing cars left and right?
GHOULS TOOK OUR JOBS
>>42010337>Alright Morty, we'really slowly bein replaced by ghouls. Be on the lookout for any wacky, colorful characters.
>>42012176Aw shit, sorry man, I had waaaay to much gum.
>>42012344>Uhhh, I don't know Rick, uuuuh, how colorful does someone need to uuuuh, to be a ghoul?
>>42012275If they've been made special citizens for a while now, legally getting a license wouldn't be a problem. I'd think that it might be a little harder, having large clawed feet and horns that got in the way, but that it would definitely be doable give the right model car, truck or bike.I like the image of a Ghoul driving a delivery scooter, careening around a corner and grinning like mad.
Is there racism amongst ghouls, hating on those nasty neon green ghouls who think they're so superior to the blue skinned ghouls?Or are they just too chill for that sort of stuff?
>>42012360>That's what we don't know, Morty, a ghoul could be anyone. Even you could a ghoul, when you grow up. When your balls fucking drop, maybe youll have ghoul balls. Would you like that? To be Ghoul Morty, bright pink with some dangle ass yellow ghoul dick? Is that what gets you off?
>>42012431I'm inclined to say that there isn't, both because they're pretty chill as you've mentioned, but also because I feel like each individual Ghoul may be wildly different in coloration, height, weight and horn type anyway.
>>42012506>Uuuh Rick, I don't want to be uuh I don't want to uuhh, you know, have ghoul balls. I think I'd um, like to have normal human balls. I don't think I'd look good with ghoul balls.
>>42012431Nah, they're just glad to have some sort of familiarity amongst all the humans. And like >>42012520 said, there's so much variation in coloration that there isn't any real reason for racism.
Why not include other cultures? Like ghost people who go through a special class to learn empathy for living beings, since they don't understand pain or hunger unless taught. Or shapes shifters who look like your worst fear but are actually nice and friendly?
>>42011448One of the major reasons some people find the "refugee" story unconvincing is that the ghouls, by and large, didn't bring those things. Or didn't seem to.>>42012431>>42012520Racism per se seems unlikely. Intra-ghoul conflicts probably exist, but ghouls don't exactly distribute pamphlets or lobby congressmen about them, so their contours are hard for outsiders to discern.
>>42012557I don't know, I feel like the chill variety of ghoul is good enough in the first few years. When stranger and stranger creatures/objects start appearing from the Neon Nightmare in Earth, than the less "human" persons would start popping up.
>>42012557Because we're essentially talking about extra-dimensional aliens here, not mythical ghouls.
Your ghoul friend Ed has snuck onto your computer, because the internet sounds pretty wacky to him, and he finds your porn folder. On a scale from 1 to 10, how interesting is it to him?
>>42012662>inb4 the porn folder is full of commissions of you and Ed
>>42012557Let's say that the Neon Nightmare may have a race of intangible specters, to to along with the fae wilds feel off he place. A couple may have hitchhiker through to earth with the Ghouls, but they would be something more akin to a random encounter for the PCs rather than an actual faction. The Ghouls left a LOT of weirdness in the Nightmare when they abandoned it, some of it maybe desperate to find or follow them.
>A man appears in the middle of town, naked and with bright blue, scared skin.>He screams widely and starts attacking random objects>Cops are called on the scene>One of the cops is a ghoul>"Oh no way!">The ghoul walks over to the human>"How'd you end up in the Neon Nightmare?">The human and the ghoul have a conversation in a weird hybrid of human and ghoul tongue >The human calms down>Things are chill again, except for now most humans who have heard the news are certainly not chill
>>42012785I'd absolutely use this as a plot hook. 10/10
>>42012662Depends on if we consider ghouls to have a similar sex drive to humans with similar taboos/fetishes. If so, then my stuff might put him off a bit if he's a normie ghoul, bdsm and all that. Also depends on whether or not their prior society has equality between genders, that might affect his opinion. If a ghoul's sex drive is differing from humans with similar functions/organs, simply for the sake of procreation/survival of he species, then what I have in my folders might constitute as a way to turn the male on so as to have sex for the sake of procreation, The bdsm unnecessary. If they have a similar sex drive to humans with a different set of tools and liberal/extreme views on sex, then, shit, I dunno, stuff might be tame. Just going off the top of my head here.
>>42006676The anti-ghoul demagoguery is fun to imagine. The House Committee on Unnatural Occurrences. Americans United Against Unchristian Phenomena. Citizens for a Sensible Reality (a satirical group akin to the Yes Men). Their rhetoric would be muddled. Deport them to where, exactly? Build a wall? Uh, how?Of course, things like the House Committee are in the (recent) past, and things have more or less gone back to normal, with the addition of a few bellicose fringe political groups.
>>42012662Relations and relationships between adventurous Humans and Ghouls probably isn't unknown, as we share some basic physiology and psychology in common, but there are social stigmas on the Human side at least, and cultural hurdles for both parties to surmount.
>News report goes out as a giant reptile with rainbow scales, a feather crest, and four eyes is running down main street and hopping over cars.>Ghoul girl and her friends(humans) are walking up main street and see the beast. >Humans take cover in the nearby Starbucks while the ghoul just yells out to the beast, "Ayyyyy, Milunterilli," as she throws her arms out and ends up hugging the giant reptile bird thing.>She then goes to tell her human friends that this thing is the pet she had back in the Neon Nightmare.
>>42012835>Cultural HurdlesWhen your Ghoul waifu wakes you up in the middle of the night because she's dancing to music while high off her ass on Strident gum.
>>42012858It's your mission to now hide Milunterilli from the government who wants to take it away for experiments
>>42006724Lets work with it, then. How would he make it better?

Hey guys I'm trying to get some ghoul artifacts so I'm gonna trade a thing for some, what do you think I could get if I trade the thing in this vid?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f071AfSf9rE
>>42011659>>42011578>>42011610What if humans already went to the neon nightmare, years ago, and that's how they knew how to get to earth? Some combination of the acid trippers and MKULTRA style gov programs actually sent some humans over, and we had been "colonizing" their world for decades.Maybe the first ones come over speaking seventies hippie english?
>>42012946>Ghoul tries to woo a peppermint farmer
>>42013102Interesting concept, but the atmosphere of the thread suggests that the Neon Nightmare isn't really a place a human wants to find themselves at.
>>42013102That could be an interesting twist. We were the ones to open the door first, went over and cavorted with the locals before realizing we were in over our heads. We tried to pull back and keep the whole thing buried but then the Ghouls followed us home, enticed by all the stories they'd heard of Earth and its wonders. The Government pushed so hard for Ghoul integration and acceptance as a way to keep them happy and quiet, and the Ghouls don't talk about their history because their silence is part of the deal.Unless you're implying that early Human colonists of the Neon Nightmare BECAME the Ghouls, which opens a whole new can of worms.
>>42013204>"Yeah uh...this is great and all, but um...we're gonna just leave now.">"Hey man, can we tag along?">"What?! No, you stay here.">"Come on, I want to try that surfing thing you were talking about."
>>42013141Hence why none of them made it back. They were all almost acid casualties to begin with, who were in their own heafs just living out the trippiest dream ever. They made their mark on ghoul culture - introduced them to surfing, which caught on, weed, which didn't, and one guy's stock of wriggleys double mint gum, which has been rationed out for thirty years.
>>42013102>Weird glowy portal thing in the middle of the worst storm the county's seen in years>Swat team gets called in for containment, there's so much lightning in the air nobody can see jack shit>The lightning is all different colors, too, greens, reds, oranges, purples, Divencinso swears he saw one that's a color he can't name>Naturally people start giving him shit for this>Meaning they're slightly distracted and don't see the neon green and orange monster until it's right on them>Fangs like a motherfucker, day-glo antelope horns, some kind of tattered shirt and pants on, and a neon blue... rabbit? under one arm>Literally inches away from the front of the gun>Before anyone can say anything, it sticks a bright yellow klein-bottle-looking flower in the end of the gun, puts up two fingers, and says >"We come in peace. You gotta pad?"
>Ghoul teeth are usually a grimy yellow, but that's normal for them>White teeth on a ghoul is actually a sign of bad tooth care, the colors are all getting messed up and blended together >This has led to more than one mistake from ghoul and human doctors working on the opposite patients early on
Hold on, we need to clear something up, because I see people using the term both ways.Is The Neon Nightmare the name for the world the ghouls came from, or is it the name for whatever force drove them out of their world and into ours?
>>42013423Good answer.Ghouls use it for both, in different and inscrutable contexts.
I'm stealing this whole thread for a modern/urban fantasy game.I'm going to call it melting pot.
>>42013624Not melting pot of friendship?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUAsAmhfBIw
>>42013406Like others have said, "Neon Nightmare" is both a descriptive name for the Ghoul's homeworld and the term they give the thing they've fled to earth from. It's sort if like like how an over-stressed employee might say that "work is fine, except for all the work" when asked about their job. It could be that they were able to survive in the Neon Nightmare just fine up until some sort of cosmic shift which made the Nightmare "even more so," beyond their ability to survive there any longer, forcing them to flee.
So ghoulification is a rare thing that can occur, but could humanification also happen? A ghoul turning into a human randomly?
>>42013762Honestly, I wouldn't say it's a thing. That was an idea tossed out early on, and doesn't mesh with what's formed since.
Wait, might the ghouls end up giving us some of their diseases, and vice versa?
>>42013828>Ghouls get herpes>Humans get horns
>>42013869>the bigger the horns, the bigger slut the ghoul is.
>>42013828Don't think diseases so much as curses. What sorts of jobs do you imagine Ghouls might be able to work or be granted? I've sort of been picturing them in low-level service and retail jobs for the most part: cashiers, delivery girls, short order cooks, lifeguards. Almost the sort of jobs that highschoolers and college kids get during summer break.
>>42013900Same. I don't imagine many ghouls being in high earning jobs, say for maybe the few ghoul actors out there.
>>42012368Windscreens are covered in different colours to Ghoul eyes, so they're only able to drive vehicles that don't have any.
>>42013900>>42013931Agreed. I think it was suggested earlier that Ghouls weren't extremely materialistic, and given their surfer-hippy-stoner personalities and alien refugee status, it makes sense that they would work jobs that were relatively low stress, paid just enough to survive on and provided a lot of free time.
>>42013869>>42013899>For some reason, anyone that has sex with a Ghoul (male or female, Ghoul or Human), grows their horns a little bit (or the base of the horn develops).>Once the horn base is there, good fuckin' luck getting rid of it, but the horn itself is easily trimmed.>Ghouls don't use it to be judgmental, just to know who's down and who's just friendly.>This helps keep them from going turbocreep on Humans that aren't into them.>It's plausible they don't really have a noticeable concept of "interracial" for two reasons: their own kind vary wildly to their perceptions, and they usually do that kind of social navigation based on horn size anyway.>Humans who are against interracial mingling will be prejudiced against other Humans with horn bases.>This leads to Humans with horns usually keeping a tight watch and trying their best to hide the bases.>This possibly leads to slight suspicion against Humans with long hair. Also gotta agree with >>42013900 but then I'd wonder, did Ghouls even have diseases? If they do now on Earth, are they the same or radically different, or only sometimes?>>42014105You ever see car windows that have poor tinting through polarized glasses? Maybe that but times thirty, and the patterns are clashing colors.
Would you let a ghoul babysit your child, or would you fear that they would eat your food and probably hang out with friends in your house?
>>42014273>Baby, baby, hey squishy baby, you gotta *burp* try this Mintyfresh! What slang would ghouls have for human things that affect them differently? Things humans have no real reason to have slang for?
>>42014257>Ghoul goes to an anime convention >Not sure if the horns people are wearing are fake, or if they're really down with ghouls
What else can ghouls get high on besides mint?Cinnamon?
>>42014436better idea, Horseradish, it's an even more intense high for Ghouls, main complications from it come from the fact that Ghouls have the same response to ingesting a large amount of horseradish as a human would, luckily it's only mildly addicting compared to Mint so this rarely causes huge issues for them
This has to be my favorite thread in a really long time.I love you, /tg/.
>>42014312Sorry for samefag, but I thought of a suggestion for my own question.>A gum company capitalizes on their new, abundant, fervent customers.>The team hires an all-ghoul group, plus one human for consumption safety, to develop the coldest high.>They name the new gum Wendigo, borrowing the name from modern depictions of Native American(?) mythos.>This is because it makes them feel cold as well as a bit of "pleasant vertigo" as one ghoul described it.>ghouls also exhibit a frost breath when intoxicated.>>42014436>While mint is a popular, safe hallucinogenic for ghouls, dark chocolate can be a very potent depressant.>So potent that only one that builds a tolerance could ingest a full fun-size (American) Hershey's bar and not be sent to the ER.>Let alone the actual good stuff.I'm sorry my fellow Americans, but we have utterly failed in the field of chocolate.>>42014436>Curiously, cinnamon doesn't seem to have any effect at all on ghoul cognition.>In fact, they can't even taste it.>However, due to ghoul reactions to it, cinnamon is now included in survival and medical kits.>The effect is two-fold. Firstly, their bioluminescence becomes magnified, to the point that they offer enough light for a human to comfortably see by.>Secondly, any *minor* wound (cuts and bruises) that their light patterns cross through heal up over the next couple hours.>Truly, ghouls are baffling.
>>42013776In that case, what WOULD be some good magical phenomena to occur after ghouls enter the world. So far the most compelling seem to be:>weird ghoul-esque stuff like plants and animals start to appear in the wild>normal humans start seeing entirely new colorsThat's a little paltry if we're shooting down ghoulification. We need some new ideas for this sort of thing.
>>42013900Man, all the highschoolers must be pissed that they're losing their summer jobs to these guys.
>>42014702dey turk er jerrrbs
>>42014257ANYBODY who has sex with a ghoul getting horns seems a bit much. I think it should still be something like an STD, in that it can happen, but not always.
>>42014683Someone suggested humans having freakier dreams ever since the ghouls came.
>>42014312>>42014677>The branded name "Wendigo" becomes a common word used as a catch-all for mint gum, which then morphs into the slang "Wendy"We've done that with a bunch of things ourselves.
So, ghouls would worship Jimmy Buffet like some sort of saint, right?
What does a sad ghoul look like? Can they even frown, or is it true that they can never actually stop smiling due to how their mouths work?
>>42014761Sometimes while they're awake.
>>42014798Speaking of ghoul faith, how would that even work?I almost imagine that while they usually don't believe or disagree with human religions, at some point during their time in the Neon Nightmare they've basically seen Elder-God tier creatures, and now they don't really care so much about faith due to it.They don't like going into more details than that they've had some pretty big guys back home.
>>42014683How about limited, localized reality warps? Like, periodically time and space distend and flex, everything tastes purple and smells cold for a moment. People within the area of effect experience it (although sometimes groups experience it selectively, so it's harder to distinguish from isolated hallucinations), then reality pops back to normal like nothing happened.
>>42014855>at some point during their time in the Neon Nightmare they've basically seen Elder-God tier creaturesEhhh, I'd prefer not to inject Lovecraftian stuff into this.
Have we settled the matter of if ghouls and humans can have children with each other or not?
>>42014798I bet they also really like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Though they don't get the Snozberry joke, because that sounds like a real taste to them.
>>42014926Possibly when there are large numbers of ghouls collected in one spot? If it's at a rave or party, some people can't even tell the difference.>>42014942Agreed, Lovecraft has a time and a place. Not here.
>>42014962We have not.By the way, do ghouls have lips? I know they have big mouths that smile all the time, but they'd need lips to talk.
>>42014978>Possibly when there are large numbers of ghouls collected in one spot? If it's at a rave or party, some people can't even tell the difference.I prefer to think it's jut a natural phenomena caused by the ghouls breaking through to our world. Not something localized the the ghouls themselves but just like the equivalent of weather.>Localized reality warps forecast for this morning...>"Ah damnit, I have to go to work in this.">"Hey, buddy, you really need to unwindulax. Take it easy. Want a Mai Tai?"
We really need more art of beach ghouls. Somebody round up some drawfags.
>>42014996>They need lips to talkWell then they have lips.On that note, I'm really afraid of this little project ever getting to "they just can because ghouls." Putting in a preemptive vote to stay away from that. I'm okay with the unexplained and the outrageous, just nothing that gives them ability they shouldn't have.>>42014962I think we did at some point. A hybrid spawn stays in a sort of in-between until they start to have a sense of self and turn toward full human or full ghoul. A lot of people here would object to it though, saying it's very tumblr-esque.
>>42015117I don't think ghouls really have any powers. They may react to the world differently than we do, and their presence does lead to magical things happening, but they themselves do not control magic.
>>42015117That was like, one in three options someone came up with.1. Tumblr decision2. Human that turns into a ghoul at adult age no matter what3. Human with colored skin and small horns
>>42015117Yeah, I don't think the ghouls themselves should have much in the way of magic abilities, just different biology. And even then, that different biology is largely limited to how they perceive and experience the world. The really weird stuff is all phenomena out in the world that sort of came along with them, when the cross-dimensional rip occured.
So ghouls are chill with most things, but are there any animals on Earth that are so freakish and different in their eyes to anything that they've seen in the Neon Nightmare that the might actually be afraid of it?Maybe not that intense, but you know how lots of people have a fear of spiders? Do the ghouls have a phobia of any Earth creatures?
In a setting like this, I would appreciate if magic users were a thing but so uncommon as to basically be as common as non-performing 'sorcerors' in our world. Anyone else like the idea that everyone knows that magic is real but still a big unknown.
>>42015253It seems that any magic that is happening is just the ripple effects of the ghouls traveling to our world. It doesn't seem like anyone would have any real control over it, say for some unknown person who travels back and forth so often that they know what their actions can do in the each dimension.
>>42013869>Implying people on 4chan wouldn't want to grow and show off big horns. People who do this are sometimes called 'Succubi' or 'Incubi' for their preferences
>>42015228They might be freaked out by anything that's bioluminescent that isn't another ghoul. Reminds them too much of the Neon Nightmare. Speaking of which, are there any animals that give off light outside our spectrum? That might be good examples as well.
>>42015304>The ghouls don't understand discrimination on that basis, and so adopt the term as a term of endearment toward horned humies, which just makes those people angrier.fuck off captcha, that stew had cabbage in it
>>42006676This sounds interesting, but the word "ghoul" seems odd for these creatures. I'm all for reworking mythincal creatures, but one thing that's consistent about "ghouls" in mythology is that they eat the dead. How is that incorporated here?
>>42015305Ghouls that find out about Mantis Shrimp find some sort of bizarre connection to the little murder machines due to their shared ability to see multiple colors outside human ability. Are some Jellyfish Luminescent because I could see a ghoul not being okay with them.>Dude, they look like they're a chill group. But...they're totally not.
>>42014962I think that Human-Ghoul unions always produce viable offspring, but that those offspring are sometimes... a little special...
>Ghouls aren't often scared of human monster myths (vampires, zombies, ghosts, ect)>The can think that they're cool, but they don't find them very spooky>When asked what monster myths the ghouls have, they often describe things that don't make sense to humans, because they're trying to explain it in a way humans can understand >"Look dude, the Fylet is kinda like a...oh, I got it, it's like a bigger line inside a smaller line...no, you don't get it, it's freaky because like...look, it's like...it's like a really deep blue on one side and a ...pink? Yeah, a pink on the other side and...look man, I don't care what you think, those stories freaked me out when I was a kid.
>>42015253>>42015278I'd hesitate to even call any of this magic.I mean, the effect is the same (crazy unrealistic stuff happening) but as pointed out earlier, the ghouls aren't really mythical creatures, they're extra-dimensional aliens. The actual mechanics of what's happening seem less like magic, and some bizarre intrusion of extra-dimensional physics into our reality, mixed up with a quantum mechanics clusterfuck.
Every October, you can see ghouls lining up at carnivals trying to get jobs in the haunted houses.
Here's a silly question. Would ghouls enjoy ttrpgs? Would mixed-race groups have trouble gaming together because their cultures are too different? Thinking like what >>42015537 said.>The BBEG is like, two lines, but has two sides, what? How is that an enemy?>NAH MAN YOU DON'T GET IT>no shit>>42015527Iiiii dunno bout the skull head
>>42015474"Ghoul" in pop culture has long since been divorced from its original meaning. It's just a catchall for monsters. Like, go into a costume store around Halloween. They label all kinds of different things "ghouls."It's not that this is a re-working of mythical ghouls, but rather that "ghoul" is the in-universe slang for these strange alien beings.
>>42015527I'd still hit it. On another note, what if those "special" kids had kids of their own with a human or a ghoul? Using your pic for example, if she had a kid with a human, would the hybrid have lessened ghoul traits while if with a ghoul, more emphasized ghoul traits?
>>42015357>implying I didn't post that because it's a kink of mine
>>42015357>>42015304>>42015784Meant to reply to this, but I guess both works
>The first children born of mixed Human-Ghoul parentage were often accosted by their peers and even bullied by adults who viewed them as abominations and proof of sin.
>>42015603>"Okay, what's an elf? Oh okay...alright now what's a dwarf? Oh okay...alright, what's a half-orc? Can I be a full orc? No...you play weird games. I wanna be the short human here...that's a hafling...I thought they were called midgets."
>>42015603Skull head might be a little much, yeah.
>>42015527Skullhead is great, y'all are plebsI'd take that to the dance
>>42015829>a little hybrid kid tries to cut off her horns so the other humans won't make fun of her;-;
>>42015527>>42015603>>42015857my thoughts on "Skull Head" there is that she actually has meat on her head, it's just due to a really odd quirk in her bio-luminescence the flesh on her head goes invisible unless she concentrates really hard(it's technically a pre-existing disorder among Ghouls, but among pure-breds it's a one in a million sort of thing, while in Ghoul-Human hybrids it's more like one in twenty five thousand or so)>>42015829>>42015952oh jeez it's little Hellboy all over again
>3 ghouls in masks run into a drug store, guns in hand>PUT THE GUM IN THE BAG
>>42015808I'm not convinced it matters, as long as it can create social quirks and interactions without being a sexual situation. Human horns are very obviously from sexual encounters. But we are using the idea for nonsexual story, setting, and characterization.I think that's the thing that creates the dichotomy between /tg/'s favored fare and Magical Realm. I wrote the whole thing about horns with the thought in my head that I have to make sure this is useful and not pandering. I didn't even want it to be a sexual thing, so I made sure there is a method to it as well as applications; strictly not a sexual thing.Sergals are a really good example of doing it wrong. You cannot possibly convince me that the vore and "prehensile clitoral hood" (which is a term I have only ever fucking heard in that context) is anything but fapbait.Sorry for going on a speech, I guess. I just find /tg/ really psychologically interesting.
What quests would you run with this setting?
>>42006676Is this some ruse to make me want to fuck it?Because I want to fuck it.
>>42016116NO YOU'LL GET HORNY!
>>42015228>Ghoul goes to a petting zoo and sees a goat. The two stare off fore a moment, and then went goat bleats the ghoul just takes off to go catch their breath.>Humans go and ask the ghoul what happened, and the ghoul is just in a cold sweat it seems like.
>>42016109Good question. The most logical approach seems to just play every-day ghouls and humans who get wrapped up in some sort of mystery surrounding the weird extra-planar disturbances, or the mystery of where the ghouls come from.I dunno. The setting seems a little too chill to go murderhoboing your way around it. There's not a lot of obvious conflict to act as quest hooks.
>>42016109I've got two off what was said in the thread so far.>Some very invasive plants/animals from the Neon Nightmare have found their way onto Earth and causing havoc. Go fix it.>Local group of teenagers goes on protest that low-wage employers are discriminating against hiring humans.>Employers realize that ghouls are actually better low-wage employees because they don't want much.>The protests just make the problem worse through publicity.>Party has to choose a stance and start a campaignPretty exclusive to groups that like social games though.
>>42016217>>42016238Yeah, this whole setting seems predicated on the idea of just roleplaying relatively benign social conflict that arises from a weird sci-fi premise.
>>42016267I can't imagine ghouls would be at all active (by choice) in human warfare and conflict. The most you'd get is your ghoul roomie reading the Art of War and crying at the ending.>Time passes and the humans become very well-adjusted to the ghouls' presence causing Weird Fuckery Storms.>Something something Humans vs Aliens>Ghouls are very welcome in human ships, units, etc. because the occasional Weird Fuckery Storm means the humans are suddenly a lot more capable than the enemy, because they're used to them.>Ghouls become pacifist WMDs>They're cool with it, man.
>>42016109>>42016238That's because you guys aren't adding in more elements to the setting. You are just using humans and ghouls, not incorporating other races or elements into the game.If you want more interesting stuff, add in some more dimensions and magical stuff to make the setting really pop and come to life. I've made multiple suggestions in the thread.
>>42012046I love imagining little ghoul kids going to school with human kids and the two different races having sleepovers at friends' houses. Imagine a human mother worriedly dropping her kid of at his ghoul friend's house for the night, forcing a nervous smile at the waving ghoul parents on the front porch.
>>42012316This deserves more of a response.I can't imagine them integrating as smoothly as this set up makes out, there would be such a vocal opposition to it either because of things like this or using things like this to mask xenophobia.
>>42016068My original post about the herpes and horns thing was mostly a joke, but I absolutely love where you went with it, man./tg/ is awesome sometimes, and you're a great example of it.
>>42016467>Sleepover at the ghoul's house>Token human kid is there>The ghouls are telling horror stories>The ghouls are shaking in their seats>The human has no idea how descriptions of shaking cubes and lines inside of lines are freaking everyone out so much
>>42012662>SO YOU ARE INTO GHOULS>I KNEW YOU WERE EYEING UP MY SISTER YOU LIAR
>>42016499Certainly there would be people upset about all the weird fuckery that's come along with the ghouls and blaming them for it. Likewise you'd have plenty of conspiracy theorists convinced the ghouls were plotting to take over the world.Actually, here's a reasonable question. How many ghouls crossed over? A few hundred thousand? A million? Many millions? A lot of the response to them is going to revolve around how much of the populace is exposed to them.
>>42016109I think this setting is good for a whole slew of quests running the gamut from slice-of-life social games all the way to surreal adventure-horror:>You could play as a group of friends, dealing with the trials and tribulations of Human-Ghoul relations on a day-to-day basis for a more comedic social game.>You could really delve into the tensions and between the two species at the time of the Ghoul's arrival on Earth and the distrust and worry the Humans had for them.>You could explore the idea that the Government has mounted expeditions into the Neon Nightmare, with various degrees of success and lethality.>You could play around with all the things that the Ghoulish refugees brought with them to Earth that are still in their possession, in private collections and causing havoc.>You could go all-out and bring the Neon Nightmare to Earth, either in the form of an invasion of some kind or of some sort of cataclysmic convergence between worlds.
>>42016414I feel like more races, outright magic, and extra dimensions is just cluttering up the setting. The ghouls and the phenomena, plantlife, and animal life that came with them is more than enough for a setting. On that note, what would an Alien-Nation esque story be like in this setting? The human cop partnered with the ghoul cop. Or a District 9 sort of story: one nation doesn't respond well to the ghouls, and herds them into refugee camps where they're treated like second class citizens.
>>42016598A further question would be their geographic distribution. Admit it guys, we've been pretty much only looking at it with our particular first-world lenses. How would they be treated in other cultures, like China, Africa, or Kentucky?I picked a state at somewhat random please don't get worked up. Substitute with Georgia if you must.
Honestly, if we wanted to make the setting weirder or have more hooks, I think a thing that'd be cool is to see that ghouls may also gravitate towards the arts. Ghouls love music, art, writing, dance, acting(though acting is a bit weird to them). This is because for ghouls the arts are kind of their magic. This is because it kind of takes advantage of their weird sort of super synethesia. So for them they might paint red on a thing and since red is hot it might set on fire, or blue makes things invisible. What's weird though is that it's different for every ghoul, not just on what does what, but on what medium works for them. Though most ghouls don't do this because to get really good at it requires way more effort than they care to do. But human artists are beginning to discover strange things happening with their works though. Just an idea if we want to go and make the setting weirder.
>>42015527Ditch the hair for flames and you've got a date.
I really like the idea of humans getting horns from ghoul relationships, but I'd take it a step further honestly. That the more times a human has sexual relations with a ghoul the bigger their horns get, from just kind of nubs to nearly the full length of regular horns. But perhaps in that same sort of psychedelic sense, for each different ghoul a human has relations with their horns begin taking on a different sort of curve or coloration.
>>42016690Yeah, ghouls may be kind of shiftless, but they seem VERY artistically minded. They'd rapidly become a part of the art and media world. They'd be everywhere in Hollywood, from the beaches to the bit-part acting studios to the strip clubs to the party scene. Hell, the more paranoid people out there would probably start making the same claims about them that they do in the real world about Jews, that they're secretly controlling our press/media/news exposure.
>>42016673>YOU'RE A LOOSE CANNON, McCARTY! WE'RE PAIRING YOU WITH SOMEONE TO MELLOW YOU OUT!>MEET YOUR NEW PARTNER, MENINGS!>Enter ghoul cop"sup man">MENINGS, YOU SAVED MY LIFE.>YOU'RE THE FIRST ONE TO FILL THE VOID IN MY SEPIA HEART SINCE THE MOB KILLED MY WIFEhaha, rad>>42016673I would like to second this, though I have the additional reasoning that I want the ghouls and their whole schtick to be implantable.>>42016730>For some reason, anyone that has sex with a Ghoul (male or female, Ghoul or Human), grows their horns a little bit (or the base of the horn develops).>Once the horn base is there, good fuckin' luck getting rid of it, but the horn itself is easily trimmed. You're covered, bro.
>>42016730This shit's getting too magical realm. I vote we keep the horns through sexual contact as a random thing, as much a part of the weird fuckery as the new colors and localized reality warps. It just happens sometimes, it's not a constant.
>>42016763Forgot to say I'm quoting >>42014257 on the last bit
>>42016158Maybe it's the eyes. These ghouls seem to get terrified, or at least unnerved by, certain geometric shapes and abnormalities, and the one distinct feature of a goat compared to other things you'd find in a petting zoo are it's rectangular pupils. Maybe ghouls just find that freakishly unnatural, or sets off a response to something similar from the neon nightmare, similar to certain humans and creepy crawly things.
>>42016763>YOU'RE A LOOSE CANNON, McCARTY! WE'RE PAIRING YOU WITH SOMEONE TO MELLOW YOU OUT!>MEET YOUR NEW PARTNER, MENINGS!>Enter ghoul cop>"sup man"I think we can guess who the good cop is gonna be. One just rants and yells, the other just sits there and eats directly out of a bag of Cheetos.Alternatively, the human cop is very calm and reasonable, while the ghoul cop drives people crazy by droning on about Jimmy Buffet.
The thing is, it's a little hard to assume that all ghouls would be chill in general, you know? Where's the ghoul who's just a plain dick to people who's looking out for himself? Or the ghoul working in a gang? Or the ghoul who's a serial killer?
>>42016777I wrote the initial thing and for some reason felt like everyone (myself included) agreed it should be random/periodic, but looking back I can't seem to find that evidence? Regardless, I agree.I don't see how that makes it more or less Magical Realm though, just significantly less drastic. Like when eating some bad food, you have a fair chance of gastro issues but you'll be fine.
>>42016777I would agree. It's a great little quirk to happen at random, and a surefire indicator that a Human has had sex with a Ghoul, but having each and every Ghoul-partner grow horns might be a little bit excessive.
Okay, conflict question. Ghouls are pretty laid back. But what if they're pushed?Say some nation does not treat the ghouls well. They rough them up, jail them, kill them, segregate them from the human population. What do the ghouls do when their backs are up against the wall?I'm picturing punk anarchist ghouls. Mowhawks and piercings and bandanas over their faces. Sneaking around at night to spray indecipherable graffiti on buildings, throwing Molotvs at police vehicles during street riots. They'd be horribly unorganized, but I think, when push came to shove, some of them would shove back.
There'd be some horns hella fast heh. Still, if it was random I could go with that, but I think that once you get the "horns" them growing through deeper relationships could be something. Also, I think it'd just be cute to see the human with their ghoul waifu and they have these long curling horns of the same color and shape as their love.
>>42016730That would really force humans to limit their encounters with ghouls though, and pretty much eliminate any prospect of casual interracial pairings. Let's keep that as a STD type thing.Speaking of which, would condoms or other forms of protection prevent humans from catching horns?
>Ghouls in Africa are killed and their horns are cut off and grounded up due to local beliefs that they can cure diseases when snorted.
>>42016690I really like going along this train of thought, in addition to some humans being able to see unknown colors or begin having incredibly neon nightmare-esque dreams. Suddenly understanding bits and pieces of the ghouls' explanations that have other humans scratching their heads.
>>42016848Very excessive. That shit would cause huge divisions in the populace. Think about humanity's reaction to mixed race or same-sex relationships over the decades. This would be just like that, at least for a while, only now anyone who actually had sex with the "other" would have an actual Scarlet Letter planted right on their foreheads. No human would ever fuck a ghoul if they were GUARANTEED to be mark out with a physical deformity that would open them up to all kinds of abuse and ostracism. Not to mention they might just not want to grow horns for the sake of a relationship. This should be kept to an occasional, random phenomena.
What if the reason the ghouls always have a bit of worry in the back of their mind, is that the neon nightmare wasn't always that way. They aren't a product of their homeworld, but the other way around.
>>42016905Why would they need to kill them? Unless they're super sensitive, or otherwise valued by the Ghouls, I'd say if some crazy warlord was waving a machete in their face, a ghoul would gladly part with their horns, if it meant they get to leave alive. Some might even preemptively cut them off to avoid being targeted.
>>42016963Actually, I like that version more.>"Hey man, how was Africa? I totally dig your no horns look.">"Yeah, some dude wanted to snort them, crazy stuff. You wanna catch some waves?
>>42016963I actually find that an amusing idea. Crazy people start thinking powdered ghoul horns will cure their impotency or whatever, and some ghouls get killed over it. The ghouls rapidly realize how to deal with this: they start sawing off their own horns and selling them en masse.Just ghoul street vendors everywhere, big racks of horns hanging off of their street-carts, they grin at you from under their sunglasses as they try to talk you into buying the best horns, before they then give you directions to the bar that makes the best Mojitos.
>>42016962Dude, I could dig the idea of ghouls having potentially created the Neon Nightmare because they went too deep, into something. If it was my idea with like magical arts stuff, it could just be that they made their world too abstract by freely mixing material with ideas to the point there's very little difference. But honestly, I like this image.>A human just asks their ghoul best friend, "Seriously, what is the Neon Nightmare!?">The ghoul holds up a hand, paws through their friends comic book collection. Pulls out a Doctor Strange comic and points to a two page spread of some Kirby-esque realm. The Ghoul points and says, "That's pretty close."
I don't think anyone is saying that the human horns shouldn't be random. Not sure why everyone's arguing the same point.Multilinguals of the board: what do you think speakers of your language(s) would call the ghouls? Would they just use the Arabic adaptation like English?>>42016963Maybe some sects believe the spirit needs to leave the body and empower the horns or something. Religion is weird. There's all sorts of people. Though I guess if you have no horns to part with, then that solves the issue for the ghouls.
>>42017033are ghouls cubans in this context?
>>42017130They're liable to hang out in the same part of the world, so they might pick some mannerisms up from the locals.
>>42017116While there could be plenty of exotic cultural reference words to use in Japanese, I think the more realistic option is that it'd just be Ghoul in katakana, so Gaaru or something.
>>42017116its not really an active language, but i could see tohono calling them pisin for their horns.
>>42016846>>42016848>>42016895>>42016895>>42016929What if the horns are just temporary? They go away in, say, a few days, so those who have them frequently are the ones who are getting it quite often.>>42016894This idea is really adorable, though; interracial couples would keep the horns pretty much permanently in the above situation.
>>42017116Since here in Mexico we have no qualms with racial slur (we're all part native anyways) its normal to call our black people the equivalent of "blackie" or "nigger" with no problems.I wouldn't be surprised if the long limbs and crouching stance would cause them to be called "changos" (chimps) or something of the like.
>>42017116A cursory google-translator brings up a lot of alternate spellings of Ghoul. We might need to get a bit more descriptive and translate those descriptions instead:>Demons>Horn-Havers>Horned Folk>Fairie Folk>Shore MonstersEtc. etc. etc.
So, I know we said earlier that ghouls largely take service jobs, but every culture has exceptions, and even the hippies/beach bums the ghouls are modeled on can have surprising day jobs. So, to properly show how integrated ghouls are, we should consider how they'd fit into all walks of life. What would a ghoul in each of the following professions be like?>doctor>lawyer>politician>diplomat>CEO>judge>scientist>professor
>>42017486If ghouls have internal anatomy at least as funky as their external anatomy it might be the case that most ghoulish doctors would only treat ghoul patients and the same for human types.
>>42017550>it might be the case that most ghoulish doctors would only treat ghoul patients and the same for human types.I don't think so. I think they'd be specialties. You'd probably only treat one, but it'd probably a mix of who treats who.
>>42017486>DoctorPediatrician/doctor for Ghoul kids. Decent therapists too I bet for either species.
>>42017569I'm just picturing a ghoul therapist leading a group therapy session in yoga exercises at the park.
>>42017708That is great. I really like a lot of the ideas here, it's nice to have something a bit weird, and odd, and in some ways freaky(Despite me liking them a /lot/, ghouls are pretty visually creepy to most people), it's not gone all grimdark and shitty. Just something very fun and cozy.
>>42017486I don't think lawyers.Maybe politicians in more grassroots movements. No idea about diplomats, probably a bad idea since the world is still majority human, and a non-human negotiating between nations would seem weirdNot judgesScientists would vary based on field of study, probably not physicists but maybe biologists or psychologists.Yes to being professors.
>>42017708>Anger management courses with a ghoul. All honesty, I can see them working in their community, volunteering at elementary schools or something. The young adult ones would be a blast with the kids.>>42017486>ProfessorPsychology or philosophy most definitely. Theoretical philosophy or Ghoul Philosophy and culture 101.
>Ghoul writer>Writes a book about humans>Writes the humans as if they were ghouls>Humans discussing concepts that humans just wouldn't do>Basically just ghoul characters that were called human>Writing community doesn't know if it's good or bad
>>42017814>"No man, it totally breaks the cultural barriers between the humans and us Ghoulies. Now after this book signing do you wanna go back stage and snort some Wendys?"
>>42017486>doctorGhouls will definitely need their own doctors if, as our other fine Anon has suggested, their anatomy isn't quite identical to a human's. However, they may have more in common with witch doctors or alchemists than your standard human physician.>lawyer>politician>diplomat>judgeFor some reason, I feel that Ghouls may have some difficulty wrangling with the legal system, and may have really depended on a dedicated group of human lawyers and politicians when they first arrived on earth.>CEOThere may be a number of companies, specifically ones that catered to Ghoulish needs or to Ghoul-enthusiasts that have a Ghoul as the CEO. Things like horn-care products, bangles and jewelry, flashy clothing and the like.>scientistThere may be certain groups of scientists that, against their better judgment, will bring in Ghouls as consultants to help them break out of their boxes.>professorThere have to be at least a few Ghoulish professors out there, teaching Ghoul Studies at universities across the country, though I wonder if these would be positions granted to notable Ghouls, or would be positions earned by second and third generation Ghouls who have actually gone to college.
Could you run a game about humans and ghouls playing a ttRPG?
This is the first thing I thought of.
>Ghouls going to Wendy's >Chewing gum and laughing like potheads
Do we even have any good pictures of these Ghouls beyond these two pics?>>42006676>>42009054Also where did the meme about them getting high off gum start from?
>>42006676Seriously OP. What's the source on the Pic? Google search reveals nothing.
Question: Do the Ghouls have any true leaders, political, cultural or spiritual there with them on Earth? Some council or enclave working with or assigned by the government to help serve the Ghoulish people? For whatever reason, I'm almost thinking that there are no Ghoulish leaders, and that all the refugees were essentially average Joes and Janes back in the Neon Nightmare.
>>42018134Plot twist; All the Ghouls that came out of that place alive were all civilians. All the leaders and soldiers are dead.Double plot twist; All the ghouls that came out of the Nightmare are professional soldiers and commandos, and almost all of them could be incredibly deadly and dangerous with weapons and a goal. All the dead ones were civilians, but the soldiers are pretending to be civilians. Especially if you wanted to tie in that original idea of the Ghouls being preliminary invasion forces.
>>42018134I don't think it's reasonable to say that absolutely all ghouls are the "whatever, man" kind. It's not like a whole (sub?)population basically has the same personality.
>>42006676does it have human intelligence? if soI'd have sex with that
>>42006676What the heck would they do for shoes, with feet like that? I can't see many kinds being comfortable, but just going barefoot everywhere seems like a bad idea.
>>42018216Sandals, flip-flops, etc.
>>42018216I'd just assume that their feet are as tough and used to walking over hard surfaces as any wild animal's can be.
This is something I've been thinking about all day at work at a casino, for contextI think it would be interesting if the Ghouls never really had a concept of 'gambling' before coming to Earth. Its one of those weird things that humans thought of first. Like they understand using money to buy things or using money to buy services to fulfill needs; but gambling itself is strange. It's like you are spending money for a chance to make money? As a result; 50% of ghouls just don't get it and the other 50% are hopelessly addicted to gambling and need special therapy to cope. Doesn't help when companies start adding Ghoul-specific colors and advertisements to their machines.
>>42017734>grimdark and shittyThe two are not inherently linked, m8. Sometimes, grimdark is great.
>>42018272I'm skeptical that it's either no understanding or addiction. They're a fantastical made-up people from another instance of existence but they're still people. I'm fine with saying they have strong tendencies but you really shouldn't specify absolutes like that.>>42018300He could mean that it would be a shitty situation.
If you wanted to use this setting, but have more action than a lot of the slice of life stuff it entails, would having a party of ghouls and humans established to make sure no weird things get out of those momentary dimension rifts work?It doesn't even need to be like an evil monster, just dangerous wild animals that will freak out because they're in a world too different from the Neon Nightmare.
>>42018189>>42018174>>42018134Maybe the leaders of Ghoulish society are the only ones who have retained the otherworldly attire and trappings of the Neon Nightmare, being the priests, magicians and secret keepers, of the Ghouls' native culture. These men and women are even more inscrutable and mysterious than your standard Ghoul, and all seem to hold these leaders in almost worshipful reverence.
>>42018300What>>42018344Said. Like, it could easily have wound up as some "Everything is fucked, ghouls are constantly shat on" District 9 kinda thing, but I really like the way it ended up.
>>42018372I think having leaders from the Neon Nightmare is a pretty cool idea, but I would argue that the normal ghouls may not care for them very much, say for the super loyal followers that were loyal to them even after they made it to earth. We don't know what happened at the Neon Nightmare, but if it has anything to do with politics or choices made by the big whigs in ghoul society, the normies would probably still be soar about it.Maybe that's partly why most ghouls are so into being relaxed now, because they don't want to get caught up in the stuff that forced them to leave the Neon Nightmare in the first place.
>>42018497That makes sense. Perhaps there's a sort of tension between the Ghouls and their leaders, the knowledge that the Ghouls OUGHT to respect their leaders but, due to the extreme upheaval their society has been through, they no longer revere or worship them like they one did in the Nightmare.
>>42018674It's tension between the old ways and the new ways, between tradition and progress, between their lives in the Neon Nightmare and their lives on Earth. It ties back with earlier ideas that the Ghouls seem very willing to abandon much of their native culture and embrace our own while keeping some things secret from their new friends even years after they'd successfully made Earth their new home.
>some asshole country, let's say... Russia on a particularly bad day gets real unfriendly to the ghouls>maybe some of them held a party in one of their nuclear silos, I dunno>Forces 'em into one place, treats 'em with all the hospitality one would expect from a hostile government>All those ghouls in one area feeling that upset makes the area... Unstable>Ghouls around the world are like "that's a real bad idea, bruh"
>>42018825At the very least, this ought to be a story that gets told and retold in this setting. No one is sure whether or not it actually happened, but the thought is sobering and the worry that something like this could happen definitely informs various governments decisions regarding their treatment of ghouls.
>>42018894Humans:>That can't really happen can it?Ghouls:>n-no...>pic relatedExpanding on it, maybe the ghouls are trying to forget that they can do it, because as long as they don't expect they can, then it's likely they can't, like a dream? But then are they right?
>A decade or so after the ghouls arrive>A half-ghoul child is basically shat on by everyone except their parents for being a half-ghoul>The half-ghoul gets it in there head that the ghouls who stayed behind in the Neon Nightmare would treat her better>She runs away from home>The ghoul mother is certain that the child has found a way back to the Neon Nightmare, probably by traveling too deep in a reality warp>The father isn't so sure their daughter would now how to do that, and might still be on Earth, looking for someone who would be willing to go with her there, which could be equally as dangerous.>They hire you and your fellow detectives to go find their childwould this quest work?
>>42018995Why wouldn't it?We're reaching bump limit, friends. Do we part 2 immediately? Do we part 2 in like a week? Do we leave it as-is and mostly forget about it?
Maybe give it until tomorrow, threads starting to slow down. But that's just me.
>>42019049I'm stealing shit in this thread for my custom setting. I'm sure I'll make a thread about that later.
>>42019049Because I don't know what type of quests work in this setting.
>>42016499Honestly this would probably be the best invent ever for humanity. Finally a real target for all the xenophobia we have going around.I'd say we're looking at a District 9 at minimum.
Here's a quick one before the thread ends I just thought about, incidentally from walking by a TV that had the news on.How would their voices differ from humans'? For some reason I'm picturing(?) raspier and scratchier voices, but not much different otherwise. Wonder if they have a sort of racial accent.
>>42019049I'd suggest that we might wait on starting a new thread immediately. There's a lot to digest in this thread, and it might be good to work up some original content in the downtime to post in the next one in a week or so, perhaps. I know that I want to try some writing, and maybe place a request in the drawthread. ANy requests?>>42018995This sounds like a pretty great quest actually. It's got a heart, mystery and potential danger to it. Well done!
>>42019232One think that I was half-jokingly considering was that their voice might stay the same, but they might cycle through different regional or national accents unintentionally.
>>42012830>Deport them to where, exactly?Hell.
>Teacher, we don't want to play with the ghoul kid anymore, he keep popping the ball with his horns!
How's their athletic ability? There's some stuff to consider if they want to participate in sporting events or olympics if they have an advantage over humans.
>>42019398they are super good at hackysack due to their massive feet
>>42019398I sort of imagine that they are for the most part a bit stronger and faster than humans, almost supernaturally so,but not so much that they're supermen and women.
>>42019511They seem pretty lanky to be stronger than humans. That would mean they're quite a bit bigger than us.
>>42019398>>42019578No, ghouls should be smaller and weaker then humans on average. If you're going to give them all these weird perceptive powers, you should balance them out.
>>42019604Agreed on all counts.I wonder how practical their extra perception is. I'm not really familiar with what an increased spectrum would give them.
>>42019658No idea, but first and foremost it would make them the best suited at identifying and spatial fuckery or any doorways or beasties from their home dimension, since the influx of warping, unreal colors is instantly recognizable.Another idea; some of the colors don't act a certain way on certain substances. For example if somebody built a fake wall, the slight difference in texture or time of painting would allow a sheen of color that seems glaringly obvious to the Ghoul. They could also maybe see through things like masks or light fabrics in general because the 'colors' underneath are bright enough for them to shine through.
>>42017486I'd like to think that some ghouls are actually really good at abstract science and math.Like certain concepts that regular people find really strange and unintuitive just make sense to them.
>>42019604Basic evolutionary stuff, got it.
>>42019706I like this idea that their enhanced perception isn't merely biological but is slightly magical as well.
>>42019238Any potential writing requests or drawthread suggestions?
>>42019604Ah fuck balance. Having an expanded color perception can't do a whole lot in a game when we already have the color perception we have. If nothing else, I'd say give all this stuff to the Ghouls. Simply because humans benefit from being more aware of the world, having more natural ability to work in the setting. Then, in a very Shadowrun sense, you have to consider the costs of what being a Ghoul may entail.
>>42019888>WritingA Ghoul teacher trying to explain the Neon Nightmare to his elementary school students. That or a Ghoul walking into a convenience store and treating buing gum like it's a drug deal, a cop walks in, he bolts.
