Alright, fa/tg/uys. I'm running a Pathfinder campaign right now and one of my players said encounters with spiders were always boring, cuz they're all just about webs and poison. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make a spider encounter terrifying? I've picked out the monster to use, the Diamond Spider, and the setting/environment is a dense Temperate Forest.http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/vermin/spider/spider-diamond
Predator: Spider Edition
>>41522153>Boring because webs and poisonYou're not being creative enough.Webs restrict and split the party, grabbing party members and sticking them out of the battle before they can even start to fight. Poison is another manner of forcing the players to never fail a roll, or else take damage.Spider fights should be scary because any time you see a spider, there's three you don't see - Waiting for the largest to die so they can take it's place and not get eaten - And because they make lairs all over the place. It should be like attacking a thousand tiny dragon's lairs, each one in the middle of nowhere and a sudden shift from forest to webbed gate. Remember that spiders are often solitary hunters, so the party should move in, fight a spider, think they're hot shit, then repeat the encounter a dozen times as they move through the area. And if they stop to sleep? Spiders fucking everywhere, upsetting that balance by killing the alphas means that all of the nearby spiders are going to go crazy. Especially if the females start to show up, twice the size and swarming with broodlings.Remember that there are many kinds of spiders. Some hide underground, reaching out to grab a weakened party member before retreating. Others will slowly and carefully drop from the skies without sound, and inject their poisons that start digesting people before skittering off to wait for it to work. Some hurt just to touch, with hairs full of bristles that cause sensitivity and pain.
>>41522324Also underwater.Never forget the underwater spiders. The underwater spiders that make entire colonies of web-lined air tunnels connecting large nests, sorta like the Gungans, but spiders.
>>41523719Or the universal rule of "Dragon's breed with literally anything."
>>41523737Spiders capable of trapping and killing flying dragons? Yes please.
I gave mine weak acid for blood and venemous spiderlings that pop out whenever hit . 3 hits equal a swarm.
>>41522153OP, the answer to your problem is giant trapdoor spider.Grapples a party member (preferably the weakest, at least by frame) unless they have superhuman reflexes, then drags them in its tunnel (yeah, once it's got a prey, it doesn't stay right below the surface to be picked by the rest of the party). The victim is :- caught by surprise and struck by fear and panick- held by a giant monster with huge strentgh- while getting paralysing poison injected in their body- overal in a cramped tunnel where it will be difficult to move or fight even if they somehow manage to escape the grasp of the monster- and all that while singled out from the rest of the party for several rounds while they try to open/break the lid and then move through an almost vertical tunnel that's dangerous and hard to deal with when you don't have 8 legs.- and even when they get there, only one at a time can help and fight in that cramped spaceLet's see if your player still thinks it's still "boring, cuz webs and poison"
>>41524597While I'd call that a proper dickmove if you really wanted to put the fear of god(of spiders) into them that'd do it. Just watch out for high pitched whines and gnashing teeth. You will piss someone off with this move. Namely the poor squishy caster that gets grabbed.
In my setting, all spiders are the result of a mage/wizard going bugfuck insane after he started experimenting with leylines and watching his Son/apprentice getting devoured by horrific creatures that exist just a shade out of reality that set, maintain, and prowl the leylines to feed on magically powerful entities, so the wizard in an effort to understand and potentially get revenge on these creatures for eating mages that experiment with leylines and having them go up as a beacon ended up creating Lesser-spawns of them that broke free and populated every dark corner of the World. They were of course, pale imitations, as the genuine article is a TPK, being completely and totally immune to magic, divine or otherwise, and phased out of reality.
>>41524679Should the victim fail to escape by its own means (very likely) or the rescue party fail to get there in time (unlikely but still possible), the GM can still have a plan B to not kill the PC, like "the spider wasn't hungry, it just wanted a snack for later/for its brood si it paralyzed it and wrapped it in silk" (see Shelob with Frodo)The point is to strike fear and respect for spiders in the hearts of OP's players. Even if they defeat the encounter, having a party member be utterly powerless in the face of certain doom, not knowing if they'll lose their beloved character, then requiring the party to make an improvised camp in a cramped tunnel next to the stinking carcass of that abomination, while they tend to the victim's wounds and wait for the venom to fade (for extra shit and giggles, leave them in the dark wether the venom is supposed to fade or not, with several (and pointless) fortitude rolls), THAT should get the job done.
You can't forget, ordinary spider silk is really fucking strong, Giant Spider silk would be equally strong or greater just scaled up or possibly magical, you aren't going to be cutting through that shit without dedicated effort, and spidersilk is naturally very fire resistant with the only thing really "burning" on it being the dust on other things that get stuck to it.
HA HATIME FOR SPIDERSWe've already gone over trapdoor spiders. How about ogre spiders? They hold webs in their front four legs and snatch prey from above. Plus they look like pic related. Or you could make bolas spiders, who literally sit in trees and use strands of silk with sticky globs on the end like lassos. Or maybe you want creepy as fuck cave spiders in forest caverns, crawling from cold pits in forests so thick the sunlight never penetrates the trees.
>>41522153when i created a spider encounter, i made it all about her giving birth to little baby spiders (and webs.. but eh)she could spawn 3 kinds of spiders>webling, the one who can shoot web>drone, the "dd">princess, the one who can become the new mother, eventually.
YOU THOUGHT I WAS DONE? HAHA FUCK YOU MOAR SPIDERSDid you know there are spiders that can mimic ants? They live in ant colonies and pick off ants one by one in rarely-traveled sections of the hive, EVEN USING THE CORPSES OF PREVIOUS VICTIMS AS BAIT. Pic related for your party. Jumping spiders can leap dozens of times their own body length. Crab spiders can change color to blend in with their surroundings. Baby tarantulas hunt in packs with literally around 70 spiders attacking the same target. Some spiders spit venom-infused silk from a distance that binds and paralyzes prey without ever putting the spider at risk. Orb weavers create webs that attract pollinators by looking like flowers. Some trapdoor spiders use tripwires to detect potential prey. Put your party in the deep woods, where generations of nature's greatest ambush predators have been devouring animals, adventurers, and each other for years. Remember how a spider works. It doesn't fight, it hunts. It won't confront you or charge like a monster because it is designed to immobilize and devour you before you know it's there. The only time you see a spider is when you're already as good as dead.

>>41527254I was expecting Spidergirl
>>41527346where do you think you are ?
>>41522153>cuz they're all just about webs and poison.Wolf Spiders do not rely on either of those to hunt. They use eyesight and sense vibrations in leaf-litter to track their prey, and they behave very similarly to cats during the actual hunting process.Trap-door spiders also hunt differently than your usual poison n' webs spiderLet's not forget jumping spiders which also hunt like cats, though not quite as cool as wolf spiders. And of course there are crab spiders, which disguise themselves as parts of flowers and then poison bees and butterfly and eat them after they die.Oh, and did you know certain tarantulas can fire barbed spines from their legs to blind predators?
>>41525970>you aren't going to be cutting through that shit without dedicated effortA strand of spider silk the size of your average rope is effectively indestructible by mundane means. You'd need magic weapons and/or just straight up magic to cut through it.Spider silk is fucking OP as shit. Seriously, there have been military-funded projects to try and find a way to make spider silk clothing, because a shirt made of spider silk would be like kevlar at a tenth of the weight.
>>41527597>A strand of spider silk the size of your average rope is effectively indestructible by mundane means.>sharp cutting edges are magical
>>41527640You know how paper is super easy to cut when you have a single sheet? But if you try to use your scissors on a phone book you're going to end up with bruises on your hands and broken of scissors?Spider silk is kind of like that, except your scissors won't actually cut through it even when it's a single strand. Scale that up and you're going to be dulling your sword if you try to cut through giant spider webs.
Don't forget to have lots of little spider swarms in holes that people need to reach though. Nothing's worse than putting your hand in a hole and finding a shit ton of spiders in it, even more so when it's not expected.
>>41527423Right were I want to be
>>41527694I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a wild guess: you've never had any formal education about material properties and because of that, when you hear "spider silk is stronger than steel" you incorrectly think "if I tried to cut spider silk with a steel sword, the sword would be blunted and the silk would be no worse for wear".
>>41522153So you want to terrify your players with Lolth incarnate? Well your going to need a couple of things and a jump scare isn't one of them.>A spider (fucking duh)>A large cavern>Darkness (inky black and a shit ton of it too)>Several beams of light (islands of safety....OR NOT)>build upSo as the party is wandering through the cave, they should start to notice the hallmarks of a predator. Scuff marks and large scratches in the walls. Dried blood splatters. The whole 9 yards. As they progress farther into the cave/cavern, it should stop showing up. In fact the floor and walls should be immaculately clean, no marks, no blood. Then they will enter the main cavern, the lair of the spider. It is dark, like can barely see 5 feet away dark. But there are several small beams of daylight that act like spotlights. Perceived safe zones. At this point, with a decent Perception check they might notice quiet twangs echoing through the cave, small rocks being displaced, a muffled voice. An excellent Inspection check would find small almost invisible strings running through the dirt. Meanwhile, the D. Spider is tracking them. It has circled around behind them, cutting off a retreat the way they came. It should strike once at the very back player and retreat back into the darkness. In fact, do this via whisper. The objective is to drive them into the islands of light. This will amplify the darkness. More of these quick attack and retreat moves should be made until they are sufficiently herded in a circle. Thus begins phase 2: the cull. The D. Spider should shoot a sticky tether at one of the players and drag them into the darkness. A quick paralyzing bite and a decent wrap with silk will tie them up for the rest of the encounter. Perhaps do this once again with another player. Then initiate Phase 3: The Trap. You have the D. Spider, almost imperceptibly slide the body of the wrapped, poisoned players into a separate beam of light away from the rest of the group.>cont
>>41526052Came here to post that. I fucking love ogre-faced/bolas spiders. They're so extremely underrated.
>>41527889No, I'm going off the bit where people are looking into using spider silk as armor specifically because it's almost impossible to rip and/or tear.Seriously, go get your scissors, find the nearest spider web and try to cut it.
>>41527953If only Tumblr was capable of producing gifs longer than half a second. Sorry, this one seems to cut out right at the interesting part.
>>41527931>contThe idea is to have 1 or 2 of the remaining players go to aid the fallen one. This further divides the party. Then commence any combination of the quick strikes and silk tether. Also, you could have the D. Spider leap into a beam of light with players in it, wreck havoc for a turn or two and then disappear back into the darkness. I've done something like this with my players and whilst the objective of it wasn't to scare them, not knowing where and when the monster was, was sufficiently terrifying in and of itself. Add in the idea that it is smart enough to plan ahead, set traps and manipulate, and you have a truly terrifying encounter.
>>41527961>No, I'm going off the bit where people are looking into using spider silk as armor specifically because it's almost impossible to rip and/or tear.I see you're the kind of simpleton who thinks diamonds being the hardest substance on earth means that you can't shatter one with a steel headed hammer. I wonder whether or not I should dig out my old books and educate your ass, or just leave you to wallow in your ignorance.>Seriously, go get your scissors, find the nearest spider web and try to cut it.I can destroy spiderwebs with the fucking pinky finger of my nondominant hand. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have any trouble doing it with a piece of sharp steel.
Just use these.Healing spiders.Fine VerminHP 1AC 22(+8 size, +4 Dex)STR 1 DEX 18 CON 2 INT - WIS 3 CHA 2They're small, innocent looking spiders, quite like the normal vermin you encounter in any dungeon or heck, normal floor. Roughly the size of a dime, smaller without the legs. However, if given a chance, they'll fall on/climb on to a player, use their venom to numb an area, and then burrow inside a humanoid/monsterous humanoids skin(they often do this to those asleep). From that point forward, they absorb any positive energy cast on the person, growing under his skin. At first, it's only a small amount, one point off a spell. However, when exposed to negative energy, the spiders instead multiply. They reduce the negative energy damage by one, and the single spider becomes a colony of two. From that point on, things double. Two spiders absorb two points of healing, and subtract two points of negative energy to multiply into four. From four, they become eight, and so on and so forth. When the spiders reach a certain population(eight in a tiny creature, 16 in a small creature, 32 in a medium creature, and so on and so forth) they will wait until night to burrow out of the body, each spider dealing a single point of damage as they carve their way out of the flesh, dispersing to find fresh prey. If the unfornature prey survives the ordeal, he's now quite capable of being healed. It's a DC20 check to spot a spider as it burrows in, a DC10 to spot one when they're hit with positive energy, and automatic when hit with negative.Other players can make a DC25 search check to locate the spider, and a DC20 Heal check to identify them. They are, however, extremely difficult to remove, requiring a DC25 Heal check. A failure of 10 or more indicates that the spiders have begun to dig deeper in order to avoid being removed, increase the Heal DC to remove them by 5 for every failed check.
>>41528102>I wonder whether or not I should dig out my old books and educate your ass, or just leave you to wallow in your ignoranceYou're trying to come off as superior to someone else while browsing on 4chan. Stop. It's sad.
>>41528102>I can destroy spiderwebs with the fucking pinky finger of my nondominant handExcept you can't.When you stick your finger in a spider web and "rip" it apart, you're not breaking any of those strands. You're breaking the bonds that hold them in web shape and getting the strands wrapped around your finger, but none of those strands are torn or cut. You realize that spider silk isn't naturally sticky right? You know that spiders put shit on their webs to make it sticky, and that stuff is not what is referred to when they say "10 times stronger than steel", right?Don't pretend you have "old books" about this and that you have some higher education because you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.
>>41523737How can we stand against such powerful abominations?!?
You could always put in other breeds of spiders you don't see in the games.Take the assassin spider for instance, it boasts an elongated neck and mandibles so that it can hold it prey, other spiders, far away from its body as it kills them.So many different types of spiders, so little time.
>>41528206>When you stick your finger in a spider web and "rip" it apart, you're not breaking any of those strands.Nope, I've broken the strands before. >>41528353Brilliant counterrargument, you should consider joining the debate club at your high school. Let me break this down for you: spider silk is stronger the steel in tension, but is about a hundred times weaker in shear*, making it quite possible to cut. While its high toughness and ductility means you'll have to put a lot of work into cutting it, its lack of stiffness and hardness means a steel sword would not be dulled that much by cutting through spider silk rope.*Sources:http://web.mit.edu/course/3/3.064/www/slides/Ko_spider_silk.pdfhttps://wet.kuleuven.be/wetenschapinbreedbeeld/lesmateriaal_biologie/saravanan.pdf

>>41528883>>41528945I try. I had an intelligent trap door spider that used illusion and some mind affecting abilities as it's primary method of luring prey as well, though those were more about just being a fucker than any body horror. The Healing Spiders were meant to be straight up body horror to bother people though. They're not even really that dangerous, and for anything past a low level party not even that difficult to deal with(unless you get people who never level heal as a skill), but seeing the faces of people who find out what, exactly the spiders are and what they do, plus the fact that normal healing methods don't work on them, is amazing.I like to picture them kind of like bot flies, or mangoworms, just much better hidden.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52E2GOamndw

This thread reminds me of that old story where a DM describes his party encountering a swarm of foot long spiders. The party is predictably unimpressed, and say their characters would not be bothered in the slightest. As he expected this, the DM lifts an upside down bowl he had in the middle of the table amongst some books.A tarantula scampered out and the players freaked out and scattered like frightened rabbits. When he was able to gather them back to the table, they admitted that several spiders much larger than that might be scary.

Create spider country. Different spiders that have evolved to fill different ecological niches in the dungeon. Giant ogre spiders that hang up near the ceiling to bungee down with a net. Have them target soft PCs in the center of the group. Giant hunting spiders that shadow the party and ambush isolated PCs. Trapdoor spiders that reveal themselves by initiating a grapple. Leave them in a room with a floor that looks filled with rubble. Most important, don't let them know spiders are coming. Don't leave big webs around or dried husks hanging from the ceiling. Wait till they get into the spiders lair for that stuff. No, the first sign of spiders afoot should be chaos and fortitude saves. Try to break up party formation. Have them fighting for their own lives and unable to help the others. Only for one or two rounds, though. Don't make it a REAL fight ot the death just yet. If the spiders don't drop anyone immediatly, have them retreat. Hit them like that a couple times.Make the spiders smart.

Consider farming mimic spiders. What are those, you ask? The adventurers come across a city. It's known for its exports of silk. As they explore it seems to be extraordinarily beautiful, pristine, and wealthy. They see no homeless or poor people anywhere. Those that live there are prosperous. There are no bandits or monsters nearby. Indeed, the place has a magnificent education system - colleges for mages, warriors, and many others. As they investigate they learn something disturbing. Those who reach a certain age are taken away by the elders. At a certain ceremony they reveal the truth. The older people are hollow puppets, literally, and paralyze the human there. Then they lay eggs inside of them and use magic to erase their memory. Over the coming weeks and months the spider colony devours them from the inside out. The human body becomes a living puppet. They retain the memories of those they devour, so the imitation is nearly perfect. However when the time is right they open their robes and the skin empties - each one is a living swarm of hungry spiders. These spiders do not survive by merely devouring their hosts. The hosts are the disguise they wear to get them close enough to devour monsters, bandits, and the like. Oh, and wandering adventurers that learn too much. Did I mention that the entire local brothel consists of them? No? Well when you when looking for ale and whores and thought the sensations were a bit odd you should stop to consider what you stuck your dick in.These spiders have all the capabilities of the people they eat. They farm humans as hosts, and they wear their skin as disguises to let them devour their prey.
Give them a box of infinite wolf spiders.Have fun closing it.

All of these are good options, but do you know what I hate? Spiders that crunch. And spiders that make noise. If you're in a realm that manages to have giant spiders then give them ability to be really tough. Make their carapace -thick- and a real pain in the arse to get through. You can really up the ante by having them smart enough to go 'That prey-thing was covered in carapace. I'm going to take that carapace and web it to me'Not only do you have the spiders heavy natural armour to deal with, the last fucker it ate was wearing a breastplate of resist fire that it's now got strapped to its face or thorax or whatever. You want your wizard to throw fireballs at it? Better get rid of that.Secondly, from personal experience I can tell you that spiders making noise is one of the freakiest things I have ever heard. Perhaps the spiders simply resent the intrusion and wait until an ideal time and start shaking their unseen webs above the PC's... full of dead leaves, bones and whatnot.I have had a tree full of spooked spiders do that and when its a still night on dusk and the tree starts hissing at you and writhing...

Portia. You can get a lot of neat ideas out of Portia.Portia makes plans. It's a spider that exclusively preys on other, larger spiders. It's very smart, almost impossibly smart for something that small. There's speculation it might actually emulate a larger brain than it has by sitting still and thinking a lot. You can do a lot on limited hardware if you're willing to do it slowly. It'll sit on the edge of a spider's web and pluck it based on the spider it's observed to make the spider think its caught something. If this doesn't work, it'll start using trial and error to see what does get a response. It'll make detours that involve spending hours out of the sight of the target to get into position to strike. It's able to solve mazes where it can observe the route to the end. It just sits there and looks and thinks and then springs into action following the route it's memorized. If it does make a mistake, it'll usually give up at the first wrong turn it makes, indicating it's aware of this. So, smart spiders using lures and able to adapt to what they see the party doing. Maybe they keep seeing it watching them in the distance. Maybe it knows the layout of the place a lot better than they do. Maybe it waits until they're fighting something else before pouncing on that nice juicy looking cleric. You could also have abilities where they don't do anything for a long time but when they move it's ridiculous.

>>41540418Is a cat fine too?God I love Shirakumo's design.
>>41535048No, no, that was by the guy that held a gun to his own head and threatening to shoot himself in order to get across the idea of an ARG by playing a meta villain.
>>41522153For something different, instead of going big, try going small.Swarms of tiny spiders is one way to do it, but have them pour down from the ceiling and out of cracks in the walls and floor-- straight onto the characters. Make sure they crawl all over the players, especially under their armor. Armored characters should have to strip to get at them. If the players try to hit themselves to crush the spiders, the spiders get the players' armor bonus but obviously ignore the player's armor when attacking. Maybe apply penalties for all the itching and a will save to avoid rolling around on the ground helplessly. Really play up that creepy crawly "THEYRE ALL OVER ME" sensation. Make the rooms cramped and dark. Covered in refuse and cobwebs, with small and tiny spiders everywhere, in every room, all the time. Make most of them harmless. If the players blow a fire ball or some such, then a room is cleared. But there are far more rooms than your players will have spells, and the rooms soon fill up again. Try parasitic attacks. The players take generic damage from spiders crawling on them, but hours later while sleeping have to make a Fort save or something while they're asleep. If they fail, they take some ability damage. If they succeed, nothing until next night. But it's not poison or disease. They itch all over. Eventually after they fail, a big boil appears in the small of their back or some other hard-to-scratch place. It gets bigger. Then during combat, they are incapacitated with pain and fall over. The boil bursts and out comes a swarm of (harmless) spiders that crawl off into the cracks and darkness. "Of course you got a save. It was the one you failed last night!" With bugs, big is good, but small and billions of them is better. The players can't kill them all and in fact most are harmless but you can't know for sure and they're EVERYWHERE. Finally, don't forget that where there are spiders, there are the spider's natural predator.

Don't forget about spiders with reach. The assassin spider, or the pelican spider for its appearance, the spider of spiders. Its mandibles are elongated so that it can bite its prey, other spiders, and hold it at bay, letting its venom do its work before eating its prey. The mandibles are ten times longer than its body.Spiders that safely strike at a distance.
>>41529108Holy fuck that video. So satisfying to watch.
>Players traveling with PC for a few sessions>bonding preferred but not completely necessary>in cave>NPC feels drop of supposedly water on his/her head>make it seem as if that little bit of information is only being used to show that the cave is damp or whatever>continue walking until NPC stops suddenly>thousands of spiders come crawling out of the empty husk that used to be the NPC
>>41542744>Sorry, noble adventurers - the spider swarm chitters - we where forced to wear this disguise to attract you but please help us and get rid of the feroucious TetraWasp living in this cavern, our home.>Free us, and we'll repay you with the finest spider silk

>>41530469Are there giant spiders in 40k? This image reminded me of them for some reason.
>>41528721>>41526359I love the idea of giant bugs mimicking humans to hunt them.really makes my skin crawl.
>>41542953Maybe some nid stuff could fit the giant spider sort of aesthetic. Maybe some organism cut off from the hive mind like Fenrisian Krakens.
>>41542953Take a look at the 40k article for the planet "Murder." It's giant-spidery enough. Also a pretty influential battle during the Great Crusade at the cusp of the Horus Heresy and a pretty scary fight.
>>41545213Thank you, Anon. I'll give it a read. I'm trying to creep out some of my players in DH.
