Welcome back to Spore Quest! You are the spore. After eons of floating amongst the stars you found yourself on a fringeworld corporate freighter called the Golden Galleon. The spore immediately set upon the ship's engineer, Richardson Bright, and after some shock and awe tactics the spore managed to infect all of the plants in medbay, infect and heal a comatose atmospherics technician named Daniel Caleb, and make breakfast! At the climax of the first episode the spore finally failed at his attempts and only managed to infect Cargo Technician Mallory Atkins, rather than claiming three new hosts.Through Ms. Atkins, the spore learned that within 24 hours the Golden Galleon would land at a mining outpost on an arctic planet known as Joker. With three of the 15 crewmembers infected in a mere six hours, the spore may very well be able to accomplish his objective! Will the spore be able to take the Golden Galleon before it lands? Will the humans discover his existence? Will Richardson's naked body forever be burnt into the mind of Old Man Martin?Find out on SPORE QUEST!Twitter: https://twitter.com/SporequestQMArchives: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Spore+Quest
In the last thread we left off with a couple things, so let's start with those before our journey resumes.Mutate the "comatose" atmospheric technicians body into a brain mass? (Difficulty 85, dangerous, would increase the number of things you can take control of by 5).>Yes (1d100)>No
>>41039263>NoWe need to wait until we at least have control over the majority of the crew.
>>41039325Speaking of, we should get a little more aggressive with spreading our spores. We should have everyone under our control before we reach our destination.
>>41039354We have a very short number of hours before arrival. There's reason to be in a hurry here.
Rolled 53 (1d100)>>41039263>>Yes (1d100)
>>41039370To be more exact, the current time is 0800. The ship is expected to arrive around 2200 (assuming no faults).>>41039263I forgot to mention (I seem to forget a lot of things!) that if you succeed the check (best of 5) it won't be inherently obvious that his body has been tampered with upon inspection. If you fail it, you'll be hoping that the doctor is blind, or otherwise she'll notice that his body has been mutated in a strange way.
Lets infect the doctor first. Get him or her some coffee.
>>41039554or seduce her
>Mixed feelingsLet's move on for now, and I'll present the option again if a bunch of people decide they want to do it, or if it becomes slightly safer (or easier) for the spore to do it.Current time: 0800Docking time: 2200The spore's engineering host opens the door to engineering, a vast room with pipes, tanks, and computers galore. Every wall seems to have a readout or a gauge. In the back of engineering he can see the first section of the engine, as well as a door marked "Reactor Core."There are a great many things here, and your host knows a bit about all of it because of his previous gains! With the other engineers off at breakfast, your current task is to watch the faultboard, over by the main computer station.>Inspect the room>Inspect the engineering consoles>Stare at the faultboard>Write-in-- (Comatose)>Wake up? (Optional)-- (Mallory)At this point people have started to leave for their respective duties. The other engineers enter the common room to retrieve theirs, as well as some of the bridge crew."Hey Card, the captain is taking the breakfast shift again and wants his meal on the bridge. You got a plate ready for him?" says one of the bridge officers. Mallory isn't very familiar with this person, but she thinks his name is Alexander. He is the ship's navigation officer (pilot). At this point, Mallory has little to do until they land. She is expected to inspect cargo before the loading and unloading process begins, and to make sure all the lifters are working properly. That task usually only takes about an hour, maybe two.>Write-in
>>41039263>>41039554The doctor will be easy. The patient is under constant but basic observation, correct?Have him move a little, as if starting to wake up, but not totally and just wait for the doctor to come in to investigateBite his arm when he approaches. Also>NoI don't want to risk a host with a brain exploding on us. tg dice are not known for mercy.
>>41039798>Inspect the engineering consoles>Stay Comatose>Offer to take the plate up to the bridge for card cause Mallory has nothing better to do
>>41039798>>Inspect the engineering consoles>Don't wake upMallory>Go get some infected coffee for the doctor as an appreciation for patching everyone up.
>>41039798I've got a question, actually. Do we have full access to all of our host's knowledge instantly, or are those things locked within his personality that we are suppressing?
>>41039798>"Hey Card, the captain is taking the breakfast shift again and wants his meal on the bridge. You got a plate ready for him?" says one of the bridge officers.Maybe we can volunteer to bring that plate instead somehow.
>>41039888We clearly don't. Did you not notice we had to read a book to relearn engineering and had to ask where the hell we were going.
>>41039798>Inspect the engineering consoles-- (Comatose)>OtherJust sorta twitch a little, just a bit of arm or leg movement to get the attention of whatever is monitoring the host. If we can adjust heart rate or something to get the doc in here.-- (Mallory)Offer to take the captain's meal to the bridge for him, since we don't have much to do.Infect it on the way.
Found our waifu
>>41039915That's why I asked, I figured if the host's mind is still there but suppressed, maybe we could start searching through memories to get more detailed data on things.
Hey Spore, once we get enough vectors could we actually mutate or morph their bodies into specialized organs?Like spore producers or biological sensors that can detect nearby biomass etc?
Remember to archive now before some anon screws with the tags
>>41039888>Do we have full access to all of our host's knowledge instantlyAcademic things yes. When you take a new host you get a good understanding of what they know.Because of the way the spore suppresses the personality of its host, it makes it more difficult to access their memories. Making contact helps jog your memory.>>41039915You were much stupider at the time, so even though you knew what he knew you didn't understand it. The book allowed you a better understanding of engineering. Keep in mind, your host is a low-rung engineer. The chief would know a lot more than he does.>>41040001>could we actually mutate or morph their bodies into specialized organYou can now already, but you're not very good at it. The more visible the mutation, the easier it is.>>41040003Uh, will do.
>>41040057So the process of taking over the brain messes with the memories and makes them harder to get to. Makes sense.>making contactYou mean with the host's personality? Would we be able to do that without relinquishing control of the body, even temporarily? We may want to try that at some point.
>>41040149Making contact with people the host knows or knows of. That's why every time the spore sees something new they recall information about it.>>41039853>>41039858>>41039960>Inspect the engineering consolesThe Richardson host sits before the primary engineering console and shakes the trackball to wake it up.From this console you can see the status of everything related to engineering, arranged in easy-to-use tabs! The status of the engine and the reactors, the level of the various tanks, and all kinds of other things that an engineer would need to know. From here you can also make some adjustments. A lot of the really important stuff requires the chief engineer's passcode to enact, but you know that from here you could cause a lot of damage. Or fix a lot of things if they break.Your host has spent a lot of time in this room, and sitting at this console.>Do something with the console (write-in)>Inspect the room>Stare at the faultboard>Write-in-- (Comatose)The comatose host remains in his "coma."From the commons room, Mallory sees the doctor walk out with a cup of coffee and her nurse.-- (Mallory)>Offer to take breakfast to the captain."Hey Alexander!""Mallory? What uh... what can I do for you?" He looks a bit nervous as she approaches him."I can take the captain his lunch. I've already eaten.""Sure... yeah. That sounds great. Thanks! I'm starving." Alexander seems extremely grateful for the offer, and allows Mallory to take a plate of food to the bridge.Mallory proceeds to the bridge.>Infect the food.>Don't infect the food.>Spit in his food.>Fuck the captain. >Inspect the roomRichardson leaves the console behind and mills about the room. Inside one of the walls he can see windows and consoles for the coolant and fuel tanks. There are also a number of pipes that he knows lead from engineering, and supply a feed of cold air for any air-cooled systems or parts, each with a temperature and pressure sensor and a cut-off valve. The section of the engine located in this room is where the engine intakes fuel and coolant. It also has its own consoles for monitoring its status, and controlling the various functions. From here, and with the chief engineer's passcode, someone could control the speed of the ship or even move the ship into subspace for FTL!The reactor room door leads to the reactor room, unsurprisingly. Richardson opens it for a moment, and sees the reactor control room, with various monitors and a window into a large chamber. It also contains two radiation suits with oxygen tanks, because the reactor room is a dangerous environment. As Richardson closes the reactor room door, he hears a loud "whoop whoop!" noise behind him.>Investigate the fault board>Go back to the engineering console>Write-in-- (Mallory)Before the Mallory host enters the bridge, she inserts some spore cells into the captain's breakfast."Captain? I brought your food.""Hm? Oh, Mallory. If you're trying to butter me up to get me to accept your transfer, you'll have to do a lot more than that." Captain Joseph Buchanon says with a gruff voice. He takes the food from Mallory and sits back at the captain's chair, setting it on a tray next to him.You feel that your host dislikes the captain very much.>Tell him off>Flip him off while he's not looking>Write-in>Leave

>Investigate the fault boardRichardson stares at the fault board. It displays a tree of lights for various components of the ship. The lights are all green, except for one.The light labelled "Coolant Outtake - 'B' Junction" has started blinking red. Richardson knows that this indicates the detection of a serious fault related to that system, and he selects the fault on the fault board's computer display."'B' Junction Coolant Outtake - Low Pressure Detected - Fault Code 101948"(Roll 1d100 for either option to guess what the fault means)>Leave engineering and investigate it yourself>Let the chief engineer know-- (Mallory)Mallory flips the captain the bird as he's sitting down. She attempts to wait for him to take a bite of his food, but the captain looks behind him and tells her to leave.Unfortunately for him, telling Mallory to buzz off made him hungry, and he finally takes a bite of his meal. The captain takes some time to control, but all humans are more or less the same. In a few moments Captain Joseph Buchanon joins the ranks of the spore.Knowledge gained: Piloting (basic), Stellar Phenomena (Advanced). You feel that he doesn't actually know very many interesting things beyond how to pilot the ship, but he does know more about the phenomena of the universe than you did before. What will Mallory do?>Go to the cargo bay>Write-in-- (Captain Buchanon)At present the ship is on a course for the planet, as expected. It will arrive in a little over 13 hours. The bridge is simple. It allows control of the engine and the maneuvering thrusters, as well as communications. The bridge lacks intricate control of various systems of the ship, because it relies on the various departments to fill those gaps. The room is unusually hot, and you can see a puddle of blue liquid ahead."Shit, this isn't good!" the chief says as he runs down the corridor. You follow him, and you see that the pipe you had repaired earlier has sprung a leak at the joint of two pipe sections immediately after the sensor you had fixed."It wasn't like this before," Richardson says."Damnit. The system must've hiccuped again when we dropped from subspace. I keep telling FMC that this freighter needs an overhaul. This time they're not going to have a choice. We'll have to cut off the pipe and run at reduced power until we can get it fixed."The Chief grabs his radio and tells the other engineer to cut off the flow to this route, and after a moment the leak slows to a stop."We'll need to clean this up, then we'll have to try and take this shit apart and see if we can't fix it.">Clean up coolant with the chief.>Attempt to forcibly infect him (1d100)>Write-in-- (Comatose)>Attempt to wake up and cough some spores into the nurse to infect her (1d100)>Try to bite the nurse and infect her like some kind of zombie (1d100)>Do nothing-- (Captain)"Hey, chief. Your spore cells become more flexible in their capabilities, and you feel you can grow and shape biomass as you see fit, provided you have the ability to control it and the materials required to do so.(Learned: Small ship construction, Small Spore Drone Creation, Spore-Human Morphing (Expert))Small Spore Drone Creation: You can now create small, brainless drones that can be as large as a medium-sized dog. They could be used to slink through ventilation shafts or latch on to potential hosts and infect them. You can find a great many uses for things such as these! However, they must be within a certain distance of a functioning brain in order to be controlled. If they stray too far from a brain under your control they will go dormant.Small Ship Construction: You think that you could make small ships with the knowledge you've gained. Doing so would require materials and fuel, as well as a brain to control biomass of this size. Creating a ship of your own is quite a burden with only a single freighter to call home, but in time you may have the capabilities to build a limitless fleet! For the moment, you also lack a good understanding of how to move a ship into subspace, so these ships would take a very long amount of time for interstellar travel.

The captain host looks through the star charts and sees a small host of nearby locations.Jacksona - The FMC's primary hub in this area of the fringe, with a large station, fuel refineries, and industry. This place also acts as a small trade and vacation hub for the fringe.FMC Gas Refinery Beta - A small-sized gas collector and fuel refinery between Jacksona and a distant mining colony. This station is reported as having been destroyed by pirates. The Golden Galleon used to make supply runs to this station before it was destroyed. This station acts as a half-way point between Jacksona and a planet that the Golden Galleon has never charted. One of the crewmen has hear that it's an FMC research outpost on a planet that suffers large ion storms, though the man that told him this was quite drunk.FMC Gas Refinery Charlie - A half-way station between Joker and Jacksona. The Golden Galleon refuels here on the way to and from Joker. Joker - A titanium mining colony on a barren, arctic planet. Has 40 residents, and minor defenses. Considered to be a "zero threat" colony due to the general lack of piracy and the safety of the location.Next time you'll decide where you want to go.For now, I'll allow you guys to make any decisions about the state of the crew. >>41047884We might not be FROM subspace, my brother. Our origins are a little....muddled, right now.But hey we can proooobably survive it at least, right?
>>41047957That's not what it'll look like to others. if it looks to the victim like you're gonna bang then it'll look like it to others too.
>>41047914I suggested the water supply idea, it got no support for some reason. So u switched to this one.
>>41047957WHY?You have so many options available to you, why is your first one seduce them one at a time?
>>41047849Do those animals give any particular abilities or special knowledge?Cat's superior eyesight, balance, and reflexes could possibly be integrated into others. A dog's sense of smell. A turtle's...defense mechanisms, if you want to be more obvious about changes.
>>41047953That doesn't change the fact that I'm not an ancient, intelligent (sorta) semi-collective, and can't think it up on the fly.
>>41047975It's a suggestion, the qm said it's good for small groups and VIPs.My main plan is to hit the food sector.
>>41047975He watched Species a few too many times.
>>41047972On the mining planet it might be more efficient to sabotage the air filters and sensors that would alert to anything being wrong. Then infect everyone like the very first vector was infected.
>>41048001Speaking of which.>>41047849Can we speed up pregnancies?
>>41048023For what purpose. The benefit of more vectors is generally to either step into existing human lives and social structure, or to increase brain matter. The latter, we can produce in other more efficient ways than reproduction. The former, we wouldn't gain the benefits of by creating new human children from nothing.
>>41048048Its his fetish.
>>41047869(On the bright side, you guys got a big handicap because of the lack of pets.)>>41047896>>41047849>Honey Pot>Carrier-formOP what are you doing? Stop. You knew what that was, damnit.>>41047884>Has anything alive ever been known to humans to be in subspace before. Not as far as anyone on the ship knows, and the database of the ship (which has very little non-technical information in it to begin with) also offers no information about this subject. You do learn, now that you have control of both atmos techs, that in large quantities the spore would be detected as an unknown organism by the ship's sensors. You've disabled those now. Before I forget, here's the FINAL list of knowledge from taking the Golden Galleon:-- (Abilities)Night VisionSuperior HearingCold ResistanceNutrient/Water AbsorptionPhotosynthesisBark / Chitin SkinSpore-Human MorphingWriting IllegiblySmall Drone CreationSmall Ship Construction-- (Racial)Human Physiology (Expert)Human Language (Advanced)Human Culture (Advanced)Human History (Basic)Spore-Human Morphing (Expert) The ability to morph the form of a human.Plant Physiology (Advanced) The ability to morph the form of a plant.-- (Science)Engineering (Advanced)Ship Design and Construction (Basic)Subspace Theory (Basic) (Will lead to understanding how to communicate long distances via subspace)Atmospherics (Advanced)Atmospheric Engineering (Advanced)Stellar Phenomena (Advanced)Neuroscience (Basic)Rudimentary: You're a layman.Basic: Some minor studying has been done.Advanced: You know quite a bit about this topic. Much more than the average person.Expert: You're an authority on the subject, and know more than just about anyone.Master: Your knowledge of this subject is best described as "total." You've solved all the mysteries of the field.>>41047986Yes. I've listed new entries under (Abilities)
>>41048000Air conditioning is also a good place to target. And beverage bottling plants.
>>41048048Figured having our own farm, but you do have a pint on slipping the middle man.>>41048056No it's a turn off, just shooting some ideas.
>>41048061>Night Vision>Superior Hearing>Cold Resistance>Nutrient/Water Absorption>PhotosynthesisHow obvious would it be when each of these is applied to our hosts?
>>41048061>(On the bright side, you guys got a big handicap because of the lack of pets.)A-Are you saying humans have evil-detecting dogs to guard them?
>>41048091>Night VisionEyes would glow in the dark, and may changed eye colour?>Superior HearingNothing much us my guess, maybe pointy ears?>Cold ResistanceThicker skin porte fat.>Nutrient/Water AbsorptionNo clue.>PhotosynthesisGreen skin
>>41048061>Atmospheric Engineering (Advanced)Okay good.Let's design some equipment with that to help sabotage other people's atmos tech and allow free insertion of spores.
Don't forget that we have a twitter and an archive. >>41039197https://twitter.com/SporequestQMhttp://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Spore+Quest>>41048091>How obviousA good question.Night vision would be obvious during the night if people could see your eyes. You would also be capable of being blinded.Superior hearing wouldn't really be obvious, as it's not a massive change. You can hear better than you could, but it's not like super hearing or anything.Cold resistance affects the outer layer of your spore minions by giving them a hair-like material, and by strengthening their internal systems against cold. It's about as obvious as obvious can be.Photosynthesis? Depends really. With human skin you can't really absorb a huge amount of energy. Unusual colors like black or green do better.Nutrient and water absorption? Totally unnoticeable. This is mostly important for plant-based or plant-like spore, which would want to root into the ground and feed on the planet's water and soil. Assuming it has anything of value to begin with, of course.>>41048118(If I had remembered the pets, the dog would've started to realize. He would've done a lot of barking, but that's about it. The security officer would've taken notice to that.)>>41048160That tech and engineering are mostly for dealing with existing technology, so you're on the right track. There are other applications that will come up in the future.
>>41048061Do they not have plumbing on ships?Water pumps and filters would be good vectors.
>>41048189>PlumbingPlumbing can be considered part of engineering or atmopherics. They both use pipes with air and liquids. Compared to providing coolant to a giant matter/anti-matter reactor, a toilet is a walk in the park.Atmospherics knowledge mainly teaches you about air chemistry and the systems they use to convert various things into breathable air. The logistics therein are easy.
Friendly reminder, Spore Quest is Sunday and Wednesday at 4 p.m. Pacific.I'll see you all again on Wednesday to decide the fate of the galax- er... fringe.
>>41048250thanks for running Mr QM
>>41048277Any time! (On Wednesday or Sunday at 4 p.m. Pacific Time, anyways.)I know this episode was a bit faster-paced than the last one, but hopefully you all enjoyed it all the same! Next time things should prove to be a bit more tense. The Golden Galleon was really intended to be more of a tutorial to acquaint everyone with the spore, and how it grows and advances as a being. For the most part it was all stealth and subterfuge, but based on what I saw it's clear that people understand the kind of capabilities it has access to.Taking over a "family" is easy though. A long-time crew of fringers is child's play for the spore. The galaxy, on the other hand, is an unfriendly place!Good night everyone!
>>41048184Could you choose to only strengthen internal systems against the cold, instead of doing both that and giving them fur? Also, let's find and assimilate some mantis shrimp. We'd be unstoppable if we did.
Go down to colonyInfect the colony Place all 40 people into those empty crates we had before Morph them into spore bombs Unload crates at a crowded planet or station and watch the fireworks But I guess this all assumed that controlled humans no longer have basic needs like, food, water or sleep.
