is there ANY way to write a backstory for a character that hunts the undead without it reading like shitty anime fanfiction?
>>
>>40615049
>Works for the church.
>Said church is very against the undead.

>Just really dislikes undead

>Was molested by his necromancer uncle

>Killing undead pays well

Just a few options.

Grizzled like?

Example:
>Tobias Manning
Undead have plagued this land for many a generation. There's good money in it. Lots of experience growing up in these here villages, fighting off the undead. Might as well make money off of something I know, right?

Boom, done, easy, medieval.

Now if you want it modern? Uh... government task force? Otherwise no. Anime as fuck.

>Works for the church.
>Said church is very against the undead.
>Just really dislikes undead
seems fine, sorta boring

>Was molested by his necromancer uncle
little too edgelord for me

>Killing undead pays well
I like this one
>>
My monster hunter character from a few years ago went to check under his daughters bed for monsters one night and found one. He managed to kill it.

He left her in the care of the church and went off to try and eradicate the world from this evil.

The entire time he is a terrified, nervous wreck who is more coward than hero but does it for the sake of his kid

His sister was always the favorite child. She got into a group of necromancers and disappointed her parents. Now the character hunts undead so that it will make mommy and daddy happy, despite the fact that he has no real hatred of the undead.

This sounds like anime edgelord bullshit.

In it for the money is the real deal.

Also, protip, your backstory can be acceptable even with some amount of "shitty anime fanfic" vibes if you make your character a realistic person, like a middle-aged balding church devotee with bad teeth and dirty fingernails, instead of some super-cool attractive sexy flashy master-race lolbadass with a fucking katana.

>hunts undead to prevent others from suffering the same fate

or

>was once a mercenary, now during peacetime he hunts undead for a living since it pays well and is less dangerous if you know what you're doing

or

>is an alchemist/professor/wizard/something
>studies undead in order to find a way to stop undead from appearing, to bring the dead back to life for real, or to gain a better understanding of life and death
>hunting them is the best and cheapest way to acquire specimens for study

or

>is a minor lord in some backwater shithole with skelly problems
>leads hunting parties around his local fief to eradicate undead and keep the peace
>eventually hopes to be named the commander of the royal hunt for his distinguished bravery
>>
>>40615049
When the dead rise it means that there's a burst of negative energy somewhere near. Those bursts can happen naturally or be caused by strong human emotions, such as fear, rage or extreme pain. The necromancers are specially trained people who uphold the natural order, watching over the dead and punishing those who were responsible for the bursts.
>>
>>40615049
I was thinking of making a character who is a cleric of a sort of funerary cult. One of their main purposes is helping the souls of the unquiet dead to pass on so they can be at peace rather than linger in a tormented state; along with dealing with ghosts, they believe that a soul whose body exists as a corporeal undead can never pass on, so they destroy them whenever possible as an act of mercy.
I don't watch enough anime or read fanfiction thereof so I don't know if this is how it works in those.
>>
>>40615288
How about a nervous little middle management type? He's a celestial bureaucrat who's been put in charge of the Mortality account.

>Oh, dammit. These numbers aren't adding up. There are way too many of these bipod things walking around upright. It's not jiving with the books. I'm in such deep shit...
>>
>>40615049
>character is an engineer
>kicked out of his school for having radical ideas
>he believes that undead can be used as a source of infinite energy
>they don't need to eat or drink anything and can move anyway
>devises various machines and contraptions to harness the infinite energy of undead, treadmills, wheels, turbines, etc.
>all shot down by the orthodox establishment
>he gathers a party of hunters and warriors and turns to undead wrangling, capturing as many undead as he can to build the world's first Skeleton Computer to show the academia that he's better than them
>>
>>40615049
When he was a kid he got lost in a graveyard and got the ever loving shit scared out of him (literally and figuratively) by his asshole brother who was pretending to be a zombie and he still hasn't let it go, so he beats the shit out of undead to make himself feel better.
>>
>>40615224
>super ugly = realistic

I'm sorry you've born with a face only a mother could love, but that doesn't excuse going from one extreme to the other.

>>
Haversham T. Pertwiller is an investigator of the strange and unusual. Of an overeager, same might say mildly nervous disposition, he is an odd duck among the local gentry. A dedicated amateur taxidermist, he believes that 'the dead should be in the ground or stuffed and mounted for display'. In between his bouts of the odd undead monster hunting he presents lectures on the strange creatures of Darkest Africa and the Antipodes for the local University.

His lectures only see sporadic attendance.

Until he can get his planned book 'The Odd Properties of Platypus Venom' published or be granted tenure by the university, he relies mostly on his dual position as undead slayer and taxidermist to pay the bills. The taxidermy pays marginally better but the Undead slaying gets him out of the house.

Main character has a weird fetish for undead things that arose out of his/her time spent in religious schooling.

Brought up as the righteous paladin type, the character vehemently opposes the existence of undead in the world. Except he/she is vigorously aroused by the creatures.

Said main character dutifully goes about cleansing the world of skeleton slime, but does so while immensely turned on. I'm talking boner obvious through plate armor levels of hot for Satan.

Still does his/her duty, receives the blessing of their god to relieve their desires, can't get it up with brothel wenches.

Hilariousness ensues.

I'm playing a 5e ranger who hunts monstrosities, undead, and all general "non-humanoid evil" because that's what his family does. It's not edgy, he doesn't make a huge deal out of it, it's his job as a member of that family. Which, by the way, are all still alive and well, not slaughtered to fuel a vengeance boner.

His backstory might be a little groan-worthy though. I'm sure /tg/ will think so. In his backstory he died when the estate came under attack and his family, being rich ass nobles, brought him back with one of the cheaper resurrections so he'd always have the scars to remind himself of the day he fucked up. His throat was torn out and the unspecified monstrosities ate a hole into his back, so he stays covered up with clothing and a scarf. Traveled to the fledgling frontier town (quest hub) as a sort of vacation to get him out of the house where he died, and that's where the game started for him.

>Side question
In a world where resurrection is available, how do you feel about it being a part of the backstory? I think it could add flavor and interesting motivations, like paying back whoever ressed the character, or giving them a reason to be traveling on a redemption quest. Maybe hunting down whoever killed them.

>My name is Frederick Digger
>I am 63 years old
>I died yesterday
>Today I've just about relearned how to move
>Well, my body has
>I stopped thinking of the bodies as the people they used to belong to awhile ago. Made it easier to put them down when they got back up. They do that around here, if that wasn't obvious already. I've asked all the bards who come through, all the mercenaries, the traders, the missionaries, everyone who travels and happened to stop in at the pub when I was grabbing something hot to eat. Nowhere in the world do the dead just get up and walk about except for here. I don't know why. Didn't matter to me to find out, so long as I was able to take care of them. Which I was, right up until I slipped on a bit of ice yesterday and knocked myself out.
>Which brings me back to what I'm doing. Well, again, my body. It's surprisingly hard to disassociate myself with the bag of meat I was in control of for 63 years. My body is trying to get up. It's half frozen, which is probably why I died. I can feel the hands creaking as they try to move, but they're frozen in place, gripping the shovel. I kept hold of the shovel throughout the accident; it's served me well.
>Sometime in the next week or so someone will come to check on me, see why I haven't been down to the pub. Or someone will die, and they'll come to tell me to warm up the antechamber of the small crypt so we can store the body in the main area until the ground's thawed enough to dig a grave. They'll find my frozen body, and someone else will have to figure out what's clogged the chimney to the fireplace so they can light a fire without choking to death on the smoke. Then they'll slide me into the crypt proper. They'll probably be respectful. It's going to be interesting hearing what they have to say. I never expected to be around to hear it.

I am sorry for the off topic, but I can't resist.

more reasons

>character has a thing for the undead, but gets upset when they bite

>character wants likes to lay out the smackdown, and slaying the undead is a way to not go to prison doing it

>they were taught as a child to slay any undead they come across, so that's what they do

>they are a necromancer and absorb energies from the undead they slay in hopes to one day ascend into lichdom
>>
>>40615863
>Life will go on without me. Until spring. Whoever they get to fill my position will come up the hill to get to work hacking a hole out of the semi-thawed ground to stuff my body into before the crypt warms up and becomes useless. Always have to be quick about that, don't want the bodies to rot.
>But they won't know about the second part of my annual spring duties. When the ground thaws and becomes movable again the dead bodies thaw along with it. The first couple weeks of spring are my busiest; patrolling all the time, whacking the bodies that come boring out of the ground, reburying the damn things.
>I shudder to think what will happen when the new guy comes along and finds his tenants aren't nearly as good as he expected. Maybe he'll go looking for them, and they'll kill him. More likely he'll come through the gate and see one right away, and run to the village to scream about the walking dead. I'm not sure how this is going to play out. Maybe me slipping will actually be the end of the world as the undead menace goes out of control. Probably not, but it's an entertaining thought.
>Being stuck in a body I can no longer control is bound to be boring, I'm going to need all the entertaining thoughts I can muster.

>they just bullshited their skin color back

No, they didn't. Almalexia went through the deification process first, and her skin stayed golden because Azura couldn't touch her anymore. Vivec was in the middle of being transformed when the curse hit the Chimer, and so he's half gold, half ashen. Sotha Sil was all ash, right? I forget.

Sounds like a halarious harem anime.
It needs to be a game.

And with an eroge expansion where instead of fighting your childhood friends you instead sex them. Each one gives you part to your wife-to-be. Each one is exorcised after the sex. Make them all have atypical personalities (tsune, loli, etc) until you have all the parts. But what you don't know is that your bride to be is actually a yandere. This leads to the second game where you have to sex preists to exorcise your lich wife.

This is for a zombie-apocalypse kind of 'undead', though i suppose it could work in fantasy depending on how your played it.

After survivors of the outbreak found places of safety in settlements, the better-off of them turned their minds to mourning the loved ones they were forced to run from.
Enter our character, the Undertaker. He takes contracts to track down, cleanly kill, and return particular zombies. His challenge is killing the zombies without causing visible damage, or as little as possible.

Every tavern it's the same. I try to get a decent drink, a meal, maybe a warm place for the night. Every one of them, there's some sad sap or another goin on about how someone he loved died to an undead. Or worse yet, became an undead. Well I ain't got love for anyone. not even myself. But people pay good coin for me to kill bandits. They'll pay me even better if I kill them dead things. Suppose I have a head start, since I been hearing every tail out there. Might give me an edge when it comes to killin them things.

That's just being so super-afraid of being called one extreme of the spectrum that you jump to the other extreme.

It's the same reason why the "Yes, I added you because you're a female gamer, 'tis an awesome thing to see!" pasta is so cringy, it's someone trying to act all self-aware and grown-up while completely missing the point.

Just make a character you and your group are comfortable with and that fits the setting you're playing. I know you're probably a teenager, but no matter how insecure you are, just don't be so afraid of labels and don't dramatize things until you start being afraid of resembling ridiculous stereotypes.

Just have fun.

This thread kind of makes me want to make an undead hunter character with the most ridiculously over the top depressing backstory of all time. Family deaths, betrayals, torture, maybe his lover was raised by his arc-nemesis, or his lover turned out to BE his arc-nemesis. An undead troll raped his dog. His cat chocked on his goldfish, then turned undead, then ate his pet rat.

How bad could we make it?

knight/Character buried his wife who died of a pestilance.

A few days later when character was bringing flowers to the grave his wife rose up and attacks him.

He kills the wife and finds out that a necromancer/lich rose her up as an attempt to kill him. He slayed the lich but could not destroy/find the phylactery.

The lich tells him that one day, the knights skeleton will his slave like all others.

Horrified, the knight realises that so long as he has a skeleton, he is in danger of becoming undead.

He seeks a way to become immune to becoming undead. Or die-undie-and die again trying.

Undead are a problem, destroy undead.

The character doesn't have to have some backstory reason to think undead are a bad thing. They could have any random backstory and at the point they become a fighter and undead turn up, it's reasonable that they would want to destroy said undead.

Reluctantly?

Your character has always been motivated by fame more than money, or anything else, they want their name up in lights.

When they were first setting out as an adventurer, they were hired on by a mighty Paladin to slay a Necromancer that was plaguing a local village.

The Paladin did most of the heavy lifting and your character spent most of their time trying not to die.

When the Necromancer was dead the Paladin heaped praise on the Character, exaggerating your every action until you were the hero and he was merely your side kick.

You loved it, soaking up the praise and fame the locals were heaping on you, until some of his left over minions started raiding farms.
The paladin was long gone, off to fight other battles, so the people turned to their hero...

Suddenly you realised, the paladins plan, you had to help these people, or admit that you were a fake!
You were bound by your love of the spotlight to protect the world from the undead, you know that one day you'll reach a point when you can retire, but until then, you'll slog it out with these undead pricks like a 9-5
>>

>Everything is fine at first, but the branches start running into very serious problems not solved with the edge of a shovel or an axe
>Headstones are disturbed despite their best efforts, creeping things go bump in the night, Uncle Vlad suddenly gets very pale and won't go out into the sun
>The family learn through trial and error what works, accidentally forming their own Paladin or Cleric order.
>Many of the younger generations set out in black cabs, asking small amounts of gold to secure the burial sites all across the lands and beyond.

Your family worked the corpse fields. Putting the undead to rest and chasing off wizards and necromancers was a normal part of your family's duty between hauling wood and stacking up pyres to burn corpses.

You moved away because you were basically an Untouchable. Your weapon is your mallet. You used to use it to smash the undead up in order to keep'em down and in order to make it easier for animals to eat them.

You absolutely hate wild dog packs and you have made killing or at least maiming as many of them with a slingshot as possible your hobby horse. Only way to keep farmyard animals, people who come to pay you and yourself safe from hungry packs after all. You've been thinking of buying a pellet crossbow for the heck of it as you arenĀ“t much of a fan of pellet bows.

It's already an ironically interesting origin, but thinking about these characters having to deal with all the other typical fantasy bullshit would be kind of funny too.

New characters should not be hunting the undead as a backstory. Maybe training to hunt them or apprenticed somewhere, but not having completed that training.

And there are a lot of ways to make that not "shitty anime fanfiction".

Son/Daughter of a priestess of a god(dess) of Life. The order realized ages ago that that needed to include "clerical/book keeping" duties associated with Undeath. The church in general is a very pleasant, perhaps overly aristocratic and bureaucratic entity, that finds the whole business unsavory and unpleasant.

So they outsource that work to a small sect dedicated to studying (and destroying) Undead. The rest of the faith begrudgingly works or contracts them out. But the sect is also much more interested in practical knowledge and experience to deal with the undead. It is unusual to become part of the brutal training. So your character is much more interested in this adventurous life of good works in the grass roots level based on experience and intuition rather than the frilly, stifling, and dulling experience of a priest/priestess of the faith.

So your motivation is no longer "GRRR UNDEAD KILLED MY PARENTS" but more about a career that sees you on the road, rewards you for quick thinking and inventiveness, and probably isn't bogged down in much of the pomp and circumstance of daily living.

There are always undead to find. You get to travel all over the world.

Played this once in a game: Character who was part of an undead hating religious order, but the character regarded it more as a 9 to 5 job. She actually managed to make a few necromancer friends and directed her energies away from undead she felt were less problematic. The character was pious and respected the faith, but she had a somewhat flexible (corrupt) version of enforcing the will of the church.

Isn't the whole point of Buddhism that after enough time on the cycle of life/death/suffering you eventually achieve enlightenment?
I mean, I dunno, but what he's saying makes sense to me. I can't imagine that Buddhism would tolerate something like undead. I mean, if their body is still walking around, that means that something has gone wrong with them reincarnating, right?

I call them Returners, but frankly I can't understand why they're so anxious to return. The only way to get rid of them once and for all is to split their heads open. You see, the undead were all once burried with their belongings, a worrior with his best sword, a nobleman with his rings and trinkets.
Only some ornaments are left for the living, they get to keep their house and their lifes!
Sice the dead have risen again some people went out to kill the richest undead and take their belongings.
Noone will question why you just burst that noblemans head if he was undead and you get some of the most valueable things from some of the most famous dead.
However, the golden days of the golden rings and diamonds are done, people burn their dead now and most rich dead folk have been slayn long ago, now the rest of the undead hunters are just mere bandits looking for some worriors tombs to raid.

Most undead are mindless. It is easy to tell the difference so your character is not racist for forced drama.
Mindless undead are a major threat. Anyone good at killing them or luring them away can find gainful employment anywhere.

Boom. Done. You are not a special snowflake monster hunter with a personal grudge, you are a public service worker like a rat exterminator or a corpse-burner during a plague.

Bonus points if you smell or have skin problems, something common to many inglorious but necessary jobs in real life and things nobody will give a Mary Sue.

The best way to write a backstory that doesn't sound like anime is to give it a military basis. Anime characters are typically angsty loners, so a rank-and-file fighter is about as far as you can get from anime archetype.

Tell me how 'anime' this sounds
>Jerald of York
>Raised as the son of a burgher and artisan, eventually joined the Pengle Third Infantry square.
>Survived the campaign at Bright's foot
>His group was ambushed by necromantic pikemen around the bend at Gilman's river
>They fought in the mud on the banks of the river, until they were pushed back into the fields.
>Jerald and six other men survived the onslaught.
>Regrouped with the rest of the army. The survivors of the ambush at Gilman's river each carried several torn pieces of cloth, to count the number of fallen comrades.
>After the war, Jerald decides he cannot return to his former life without paying the debt accumulated by his survival over that of his fellow soldiers.
>He is now looking for an undead mercenary job as a way to fight once more.
>>
>Hunts undead out of boredom
>Apparently reanimating skeletons never run out, they're the funnest critters to slaughter en masse.

Let me tell you of Jaromir the Gravedigger.

A middle-aged Oracle of Pharasma from Ustalav, he was essentially a Slav with a Shovel and haunted by the spirit of his dead wife and the two got into frequent arguments.

The game was set in winter, and the ground was too hard to actually bury bodies in and there was an undead problem. Jaromir's solution: Cremation. Is only way to make sure. This caused friction with the local priest of Pharasma, leading to a heated argument where Jaromir was screaming at the man in the middle of the street to think of the children and burn the bodies of the dead.

Jaromir also promised the others in the party that if they died, he would burn their bodies very respectfully so that they wouldn't rise from the grave.

The dead are usually hungry and/or angry-with-poor-impulse control.

They're like a fire-and-forget version of an army for the angry ones, or similar to a more controllable bilogical weapon for the hungry ones.

The intelligent ones, well, they usually come with a craving (blood, human flesh, etc.). Strictly speaking, they might not be 'evil' per se, but unless they are super beneficial to the community, they normally consume without putting anything back into the world, like teeny-tiny black holes.

OOPS, you killed one of the king's/duke's/viscount's deer, or fucked a relative of theirs, or looked at them funny. Pay x amount of gold, go to prison for 'so and so' years, have 'insert limb/digit' here cut off, or kill 'x' number of undead.

You could be a part of a sort of penal legion of undead/monster killers, as a means to work off your debt to society or avoid execution.

Once there was a village where the people held an ancient custom. The leaders of the village were those whose ancestors were buried in barrow-mounds behind their halls of stone. The more ancestors were interned in the barrow, the greater a leader's political influence. It was said that in the sacred funeral rites, a power was passed from ancestor to descendant, and this power was what marked the leaders of men from the followers. The leaders could hear the voices of ancestors, when they walked alone in the wooded glen or swam by the light of the moon.

One day, a greedy leader used a terrible deceit and burned the corpses of his rival's ancestors, destroying the crypts of their eternal rest. Framed as an accident of fate, or a sign of the gods, the people had no choice but to accept the deciever as their new ruler; it was as custom decreed. The old, fair king and his family, his wife and young son, were reduced to poverty.

In the night, people started disappearing. First it was washer women vanishing by the river, then fishermen and elders on walks. Soon entire hunting packs were vanishing. One day, a head appeared on a pike in the middle of the village, and all knew they were under siege by a dark power.

The village leader bastioned himself in the greatest stone hall the people possessed, and hoarded food and provisions. It was as though he knew what a terrible night would follow. As the surving villages huddled in a shared space with what little fire they could muster, the undead came. Terrible revenants with cracked bones, tarnished silver talismens and foetid ermine capes, they each power filth-encrusted jewels and rusted chalices, bent greatswords and archaic crowns. As the villagers fought bravely against these spectres, the old king's son stood forth and cried. He told all that the wights before them were none other than the ancestor's of the village's new leader, and the dead acknowledged as much. The young man asked the dead what drove them
>>
>>40677641
from their eternal rest to slaughter the living. Their was a moment of silence, and then the dry, rattling laughter of scores of clattering bones and arms. The dead kings and queens simply replied that they were bound by blood to join with their young descendant in action; that just as he the living had burned the corpses of the dead, so would they the dead slaughter the figures of the living. It was as the ashes were scattered that the pact was made; and so would it be terminated when the blood was spilled. Whose blood must spill, asked the young man. Why, all those descendants of the dead who were burned, replied the host, or that of our own descendants. So the young man pointed to the great stone hall and told the dead that their salvation rested within, the oathbreaker alone. And the dead left at that, vanishing like spectres through the walls of the stone hall. A great scream was heard, and then the dead were never seen again in that village.

When the boy came of age, he defeated his brothers in arms in the ritual games and proved himself a worthy leader, albeit only among those who had no power inherited from the ancestors. So the young man denied his throne for now, and left to journey the world. His zeal was the sanctity of life and death, the balance of the two powers and the terrible evil that foolish men could unleash on the world if left unchecked. His mission was sealed, and only with the realm of the dreaming dead in peace would it be sealed.

X Fantasy kingdom employs state necromancers to summon vast armies of the undead.... to do basic manual labour. Every single family enjoys at least a few undead "slaves" to do house work, till the fields, chop wood, carry supplies etc...

Occasionally an undead being slips from control and becomes a ravenous monster. The state authorities manage to keep this all hush hush and cannot imagine a better social/economic system.

You are a part of the Royal Dead Inspectors. Most think of them as boring accountants auditing zombie numbers and upholding arcane laws. It is in fact a cover organization for a team of undead slayers.
