I am Sief Atanor, heir to the Atanor family and the golem Raziel. My meeting with Prince Juti of the neighbouring nomadic Iquani people went well, as far as I an tell. I finally have a solid lead to follow, a Giant matriarch going by the colorful name of 'Mama Stump', hiding somewhere just past the Iquani border.Prince Juti was even generous enough to offer me a guide in addition to a map, though I have my suspicions that this is a mixed blessing. Another of the Khan's numerous children, Juti's younger sister Princess Qualaji. While I can't dispute Prince Juti's suggestion that travelling in the company of an Iquani princess should help avoid any unpleasant encounters with Iquani who still bear grudges from the wars, I shudder to even contemplate the political repercussions should something unfortunate happen to the princess while we travel together.Travelling in pursuit of answers will also require me to leave behind my family lands for a time. I can only hope that my drunkard father doesn't do anything too terrible in my absence.Anwa has promised me that a map will be delivered before the envoy leaves for the capital, and judging by how much Prince Juti is now drinking, I doubt I'll be getting a great deal more useful information out of him. It must be past midnight now, and the irregular hours I've been keeping these past few nights are starting to wear on me, but the Iquani seem eager to drag me into their drinking until the morning.>Make your excuses and head home>Well, I could stay for a little while>Ask more questions (write-in)

I'm really not much of a drinker, for obvious reasons, and something tells me that the Iquani aren't the sort to let me stop at just one. I smile, rising from the table.“Sorry Prince Juti, Anwa, I wish I could stay, but with all the trouble on the road recently, I wouldn't want anyone back at the manor to get the wrong idea and send out a search party.”“Very unfortunate, Sief. We will be leaving tomorrow, so I wish you all the luck of the spirits on your journey,” Prince Juti nods, raising his flagon.Anwa rises, accompanying me to the door. We step outside, the crisp night air a harsh contrast from the heat of the inn.“I will bring a map out to you in the morning. Good luck my friend, the borderlands can be a dangerous place, even without Mama Stump and her inbred brood,” Anwa nods, clapping me on the shoulder.“I'll be careful, Anwa.”I suppose if I have any questions to ask Anwa in private, now would be the time.>(Write-in)>No, head home

I have a basic understanding of Iquani customs, but I suppose it couldn't hurt just to make sure.“Is there anything I should bear in mind while I'm in your lands, Anwa? I don't want to offend anyone.”...or get stabbed by anyone, but I think I'll leave that bit unsaid.Anwa chuckles, retracting his hand. “Do not insult a man's behemoth, his ancestors, or his woman, in that order. Eh, probably better not insult a woman's behemoth or ancestors either, come to think of it.”“I knew that much at least,” I sigh.“You'll be fine, Sief, be polite without being weak. Contrary to what some of you Imperial people think, our customs are not all that strange.”“So nothing I should know?”“Nothing that's likely to come up,” Anwa shrugs.“Even when I'm dealing with Princess Qualaji?”The expression on Anwa's face suggests otherwise. “No, no, the princess is not as bad as we might have made out. She's young, strong-willed, eager to prove herself, all fine traits for a daughter of the Great Khan.”Anwa glances behind him, nudging the inn door shut.“It's just... sometimes her eagerness to prove herself gives way to recklessness, and she is in some ways still very naïve. Prince Juti worries about her with good reason.”I breathe a sigh of relief, compared to what I'd worried they might have meant that hardly sounds terrible.“What, you thought we meant something else?” Anwa grins.“No, don't worry about it Anwa, thank you.”“Don't worry my friend, the princess may be a handful, but she won't be throwing herself at you... I think. Unless she does, then you have even more problems,” Anwa snorts, throwing his head back and breaking into a loud laugh.I can't help but feel like I'm being made fun of now.“Well, good. Good luck to you too, Anwa. I hope everything goes well with the mission.”“Farewell Sief,” Anwa grins, slapping me on the shoulder as he turns and heads back inside the inn.(cont)
>>39915962I return to Raziel, still sat where I left him, running a hand over the stone of his shin, still slightly warm from the ambient magic in spite of the chill. The cockpit feels a long way up as the weariness of my twenty four hours of activity starts to catch up, but the soft currents of energy swirling inside melt away the worst of the aches.I close up the cockpit, Raziel rising to his feet, taking one last look over the town. The inn is the only place still lit at this late hour, and I pity the poor innkeeper providing for the prince and his entourage. As Raziel's head sweeps past the mayor's house, I make out a gaunt shadow in the upstairs window, the Golem's vision sharp even in this gloom. Sir Tristram stands behind the upstairs window, arms behind his back, stick thin and immobile.I suppress a shudder, turning away and setting off on the road back to the manor, still feeling Sir Tristram's eyes boring into the back of my skull through the darkness and the stone and steel of Raziel's shell.Several lonely, tedious hours later, I arrive at the manor, walking Raziel back into the golem workshop and clambering down, pushing through the heavy door into the main manor. With a yawn, I mount the stairs, and by the time I reach my bed I barely have time to kick off my boots before I collapse, asleep by the time I hit the mattress.>Roll 1d100

I peer up over the edge of the high workbench, piled high with papers, tools and strange objects, eyes wide.My mother hums to herself as she works, dismantling some sort of orb laced with glowing blue lines, she traces the lines with a thin stick of metal, making it crackle and spark. A jolt of energy arcs off and snaps into a metal block at the corner of the bench, the flash putting spots in front of my eyes. It would be pretty scary for most people, but I'm brave, just like my father, so I just rub my eyes and keep watching.“What's that?”My mother grins, jabbing the metal stick into a tiny gap, the orb snapping in half neatly, releasing wisps of bluish-white smoke.“It's a power core.”“That's what makes a golem move, right?” I ask.“Sure is. Every golem ever built has one of these inside it, it's what makes them move, what makes them live.”I puff my chest out with pride at the depth of my knowledge as my mother sets aside the top half of the core, putting the metal stick down and picking up a narrow set of pliers. I let my eyes wander across the table.“What about that?” I ask, pointing to a flat, square block of stone covered in strange patterns.“Discharge conductor.”“How about that?”“Refraction Ring.”“...and that?”“Sensory Tubing.”I nod sagely, not really knowing what any of those things are, or what they do. I continue to scan the table, eyes fixing on a square block. Unlike the rest of the items on the workbench, it is not great stone or steel, instead it is made of some strange, white substance, glassy and smooth. I squint, sure I can see something moving just beneath the surface.“What about that?”My mother's eyes flick over to the box, and she smiles, leaning back and brushing strands of dark red hair from her face.(cont)
>>39916617“Hmm, don't know,” she smiles, poking at the box with the tip of her pliers, the glassy white substance letting out a clear, high pitched ring at the tap of the metal.“Really?”“I don't know everything, life would be boring if I did,” she grins.I'm not sure I believe her about not knowing everything, trying to follow all the things my mother knows gives me a headache. Still, I nod all the same, staring at the box.“So it's not part of a golem?”“Don't know,” my mother repeats in a singsong tone, returning to her work on the power core.“Did you build it?”“Hey, I'm not that old.” she laughs, setting aside the pliers and snapping both sides of the power core back together again.“Where'd it come from?”My mother smiles, leaning forward to rest her chin on her hands, eyeing the box.She opens her mouth to speak, and everything drops away.~I find myself staring at the ceiling of my chambers. I feel sweaty and uncomfortable, still wearing my clothing from the night before.I sit up, stretching out my aching limbs. Judging by the washbowl and fresh clothes laid out for me, it seems Loren has been in.It's been a while since I had a dream like that. I suppose the events of the past few days are bringing it all back to the surface. Pushing off from the bed, I strip off my old clothes, running through my morning exercises, washing, and dressing in a fresh set. It's going to take a while to work out the kinks of the uncomfortable position I slept in, but I'm feeling a lot better all the same.I suppose I have a few things to deal with today, if I'm going through with my plan to track down this Mama Stump. I suppose I should go see my father, with luck it might even be too early in the day for him to have started drinking....it's a vain hope, I know.Stifling a yawn, I step out of my room. The dream is already fading, but I can still remember her smile, her voice. I feel my nails digging into my palm as my hand clenches, and with a steadying breath I relax my grip. I'll have my answers soon.I listen outside the door. I can't hear any sounds of drunken debauchery from inside, so either he's not in, or he's still asleep. Pushing open the door, it seems it's the latter. My father is still passed out on his bed, snoring softly into a growing puddle of drool, arm slung over... I don't even know who this girl is, not one of the staff anyway.Picking my way over discarded bottles, articles of clothing and stains, I take hold of the curtains, dragging them open sharply.“Good morning, father,” I call, provoking a pained groan.“What d'ya want?” he grumbles, burying his face in his palms.“We need to talk. I found someone who might know why Bonesnapper attacked us. It's some giant in the Iquani lands. If I'm going to go though, I'll need Raziel.”“Okay,” comes the mumbled reply. While I was hoping for him to agree, the ease with which he gave up his golem somehow annoys me more than if he'd been difficult.“You'll give up Raziel just like that?”“Jus' like that. You'll be careful,” he yawns, pulling himself upright, stumbling over to a chest of draws, drawn by the bottle sat open and half-empty on top.“I could be gone a long time, is this really how our last meeting is going to go?”“Dunno, you know a cure for hangovers?” he asks, as I step over and remove the bottle from his loose grip.“Not drinking.”“I meant a cure for this hangover I have right now,” he grumbles, shambling back to the bed and sitting down on the side next to the sleeping girl.“No, I don't.”(cont)
>>39917289“Then this is how our last meeting is going to go. Shut the curtains on your way out.”I grit my teeth. I suppose I should be used to this by now.“I had hoped that after what I told you, you might try and sort yourself out, think about some things.”“I was thinking about some things, and it wasn't fun. That's why I started drinking. Four bottles of wine and this girl... whatever her name is... that helped fix that.”I sigh. Feels like I have a hangover coming on too, and I haven't even been drinking.“Your problem is you think too much, son. Sit back, relax, take in the sights,” my father drawls, tugging down the bedsheet, revealing the bare chest of his sleeping partner.“Not the best set I've ever seen, but pretty good,” he nods, wincing at the sound of his own voice“Goodbye father. Try not to drink yourself to death before I get back.”“So long son, good luck.”Well that went about as well as I expected.>Go see Loren>Go see Sir Paxton>Go see Virgil

I step outside of the room, shutting the door behind me, heart thumping in my ears as I walk away silent. I know I should say something, but what? Nothing ever seems to get through to him. Maybe once I have some solid evidence, some proof, something to shake him out of this, that will give me something to talk to him with. Then I can try to straighten him out, I hope. Maybe I'm just looking for excuses. One of the serving girls lets out a startled 'eep' as I slug the wall. That was kind of dumb.My hand hurts, and I'm not feeling any better for it.I sigh, rubbing at my scraped knuckles, the serving girl doing her best to scamper past me unnoticed. I can't wait for every single member of staff in the manor to know about that little outburst.Stepping outside onto the grounds, I find Sir Paxton standing near the group of people we rescued, who look like they're getting ready to leave. He spots me, shaking hands with an older man and turning to walk over.“Sief. Did you sort things out with the prince?”“I did. A man named Anwa, the one who spoke to me before on the road, he should be coming sometime today with a map. They know where I can find the mother of the giants, the one who sent them here.”Paxton nods, a frown on his craggy features.“I wish I could come with you, but my Legion isn't going to be fixed for a while, and there should be at least one golem here to guard your lands.”I have a lot to talk to him about, but where should I start?>Write-in

“It's fine, the prince only wanted one golem to go anyway, thinks more might send the wrong message. Will you be alright looking after our lands alone, our house guard isn't much to speak of these days.”Paxton shrugs, “I'll be fine, those giants were a rarity, for the past five years we've had nothing worse than a few boggarts and some bandits.”“You think we could try to get some of the house guard back?”“Maybe if you got some more money from somewhere. Convinced some rich lord or merchant to invest in our lands or enter into a trade deal. Or you could just keep your fingers crossed that someone strikes gold.”I sigh, not really something I can handle right now, it seems.“I see, forget it for now then. Do you know much about the Iquani lands?”Paxton nods, glancing over to the workshop where his Legion sits being worked on by our few remaining artificiers.“I fought there, once forty years ago when I was a young man, didn't have a golem then. Then again twenty two years ago in my Legion, alongside your father. A lot of the scrapes and dents on the shell come from those battles,” Paxton rumbles, folding his arms as he watches the artificiers work.“What sort of things should I expect? I've never kitted out Raziel for anything like this before.”...or for much of anything, come to think of it.“The Iquani lands are very different from ours. The Khan claims territory eight times the size of the Empire and its client states combined, but it's even more sparsely populated than the Imperial frontier. You could travel for days without seeing another human being. A lot of low race vermin and other, worse things live out there in the wilds. Still, if you're sticking close to the border, it will mainly be tough scrubland and plains. I'd recommend taking a good supply of food and water, but there should be enough game to hunt to supplement it.”“What about weapons? Wards?”(cont)
>>39918649“You're going after a giant, right? So be sure to get Virgil to inscribe a giantslayer rune on whatever weapon you take, it'll help compensate for the ridiculous punishment those things can take. I would recommend the warsword of the gatebreaker, with either a shield to help fend off the giants, or a greatbow, the scrublands are wide open enough to give you plenty of range. Maybe both, but that could weigh you down, it's a long journey and the last thing you want to do is overload the power core.”I nod, not sure I want to try using the Impaler to fight a giant again.“The prince has offered an Iquani guide.”“Useful.”“One with a behemoth.”“Very useful, we fought alongside a few clans who sided with us against the previous khan in the second war. Behemoths are strong and powerful, those jaws can crack right through a golem's shell if they can get a solid grip, and unlike golems they make good watchdogs while you're sleeping.”That does sound handy, I'd rather not spend the whole journey shut up and sleeping inside Raziel's cockpit after all.“Still, remember, they are living creatures, they bleed, they panic, they don't always follow orders perfectly, and the rider isn't protected, they're always at risk in a straight-up brawl. Behemoths work best with wolf pack tactics, flanking attacks, draw the enemy in, keep them busy, and let the behemoth rip its legs out from under it. That is of course as long as your guide is a good rider.”“I don't know. It's not just any guide, Prince Juti suggested his sister, Princess Qualaji, as a guide.”Paxton makes a low noise in his throat.“That could be trouble, Sief. If anything happened to her while with you-”“I know, believe me, I know.”“You most likely don't have to worry about whether or not the girl's a good rider though, I've yet to meet an Iquani prince or princess who couldn't handle their behemoth.”That's a relief, at least.“Anything else, Sief?”>Ask about mom>No, that's all.

He didn't take it too well when the peace treaty was signed, and went renegade. He's still out there somewhere, killing Iquani, and Imperial 'traitors' too nowadays I hear. Jackal is a permanent black eye in all our attempts at peace with the Khan, and the question of how he has somehow managed to evade death or capture, or kept his golem repaired and operational out in the wilds all these years, is one that many people would desperately love to answer.I don't need Paxton to tell me how dangerous he is, that's for sure.“Understood, no heroics.”>Go see Loren>Go see Virgil

You do know that he's very fond of weapons for causing mass death of human-sized targets, such as Firestones (a red gem that slots in just under the wrist, it's basically a flamethrower), and Dragon Whips, but he usually carries something more effective against larger targets too.
While Paxton's words are still fresh in my mind I should probably go see Virgil. The head artificier (of our three remaining artificiers) is bumbling about on Paxton's Legion, adjusting the runes on the knee joint.“Virgil, I'm going to need to change the loadout for my golem.”Virgil starts at my voice, turning around and clambering down from the golem's leg.“Oh, yes, of course, whatever I can do to help, Lord Sief.”“The wards are going to need touching up too.”Pick Three:>Armor Ward (Increases Golem durability by softening impacts, should survive multiple uses before burning out)>Barrier Ward (Single use Ward which nullifies one attack. >>39920459Thick skin isn't armor that needs to be cracked. As far as I can tell, giant's thing isn't heavy armor but simply the ability to soak up a lot of damage.Armor would be more an issue when fighting against Golems, some sort of crab monster or stuff.Meanwhile a Giant's offensive abilities are more or less centered around brute force, so I think a slow but powerful mace would be trying to match them in their strength more than we want to.Better to rely on the speed advantage an sword offers over presumably brutish enemies and rely on it's cutting power to deal the damage we end up needing to do,

Guys we're seriously going to try and waifu the maid(who been like our second mother) instead of asking about the potentially very important golem box?
>>39920917Is that even a question? The second mother part actually makes it kind of hotter.

White Box wins.Writing.
Shit, when did this quest start up again? Been looking out for it but I never saw it until now.
>>39921136What are the (major?) titan races anyways?I mean, obviously one of them are the giants, but there has to be more kinds of them or they wouldn't be called races.

“Don't worry about it, I can check.”Virgil nods. “Thank you, Lord Sief. Lady Atanor's effects are through the back of the hanger, second room on the left.”I step out of the sunlight into the hanger, the smell of ozone and spent magic heavy in the air, it really has gotten dusty in here since Virgil took over. I suppose it's too much to ask that his small staff keep the large hanger in perfect order, but he could at least sweep up.I walk out into the back corridor, coming to the second door, putting my hand to the handle and taking a deep breath. Here goes nothing. The door is old and stiff, I doubt anyone has been in here in years. A small window spreads feeble light through the room, heavy with dust. Virgil wasn't joking when he said my mother's family had taken most of her belongings if this is all that's left, one chest sitting on the floor near a rickety old stool.I sit down on the stool, sweeping dust off the chest, undoing the catch and pulling it open. I reach down, picking up the item at the top, a leather bag filled with golemcraft tools, all careful organized in separate compartments. My mother's tools. I run a hand over them, the cool feeling of the metal reminding me all too vividly of the first time I was tall enough to reach up onto her workbench to touch them. I still don't know what most of them do, or even what they're called, but they always looked so natural in her hands.I set them aside, finding a satchel full of stacks and stacks of schematics, designs and scribbled notes. I flick through them, but I still don't understand a word of it, and my mother's handwriting really doesn't help.(cont)
>>39922060Setting aside the satchel, I look into the chest once more. No white box, just a couple of books. Advanced Golemcraft Warding Theory, by Sofia Atanor. I hear it's still popular with some artificers today, despite more recent works. She was always so proud of that book.Ruins of the Sancturian Shallows. I flick through it, looks like some sort of archeological book, filled with sketches of stone structures, ornaments and weapons. I suppose it's from one of the ruins they found off the coast of the Sancturian Peninsula. Can't say my mother ever struck me as having much of an interest in archeology before.I set the books aside, sitting in silence, I couldn't say how long for, but the light coming through the window has taken on a more orange hue by the time I can bring myself to move.I frown, I suppose I could send off a letter to my uncle on the Foundry Isles, ask about the box, but that's on the far side of the Empire, it could be weeks before I get a response.>Go write to my uncle about the cube>Go see Loren>Kill time until Anwa arrives

>>39922081>Ruins of the Sancturian Shallows. We should read this see if its where she got the thing from
Could we bring the book with us and read it when we have time?
I put the tools, satchel and book back in the chest. It seems a shame to leave them here, but I wouldn't know how to use any of them. The book on the Sancturian Shallows ruins I keep, I still don't know why she had it, but maybe it relates to the cube somehow.Shutting the door behind me I step back out into the hanger, Virgil and the two assistant artificers applying the essence tracing to Raziel's shell.I don't have to look far to find Loren, standing just outside of the hanger. I suppose she was waiting for me, giving me a sunny smile as she spots me.“Lord Sief, I haven't seen you all day. Is everything alright?”“I'm fine, Loren, just been busy.”Loren nods, leaning in a little. “I hear you and the wall in the upstairs corridor has a disagreement.” she whispers.I can't help but groan, if the servants can be relied upon for something, it's to gossip.“It's nothing, really,” I sigh, heading back for the house, Loren falling into step alongside me.“Well, it could just be the younger girls making things up again, but I know it's not nothing.”Loren steps in front of me, glancing around before touching a finger gently to my brow.“I've known you a long time, Sief. When you're frustrated you get all creased up right here.”Well that's a little embarrassing, I thought I was better at hiding it than that.“Are you sure you aren't just imagining it?”“Don't worry, I think it's kind of cute,” Loren whispers, grinning.I sigh, gently brushing off the finger.“Thanks Loren, I think.”“My pleasure, Lord Sief. Now, would you like me to arrange some dinner for you?”“Maybe, first though, I needed to talk to you about something.”“Oh?”>Tell her everything, ask her to look after things while you're gone>Tell her everything, ask her to come with you>Just tell her you're going away for a whileIf you have anything specific you want to say>Write-in

I glance around, content that we're out of the way of prying eyes, under the shade of the side of the hanger.“I found out why that giant, Bonesnapper, came here. He was sent here by his mother. I want to know why. I'm going into the Iquani lands to find out.”Loren doesn't look all too happy at that revelation.“Sief, are you sure this is a good idea? You only just started piloting your golem recently.”I force a smile. “I'll be fine, I won't do anything reckless.”Loren sighs, pressing a finger to my brow once more. “You're getting all creased up again. Just... promise me you'll come back.”I open my mouth to reply, catching sight of the stubborn frown on Loren's face, I close it again. With a sigh, I nod my head.“I promise. In the meantime I'd like you to look after things round the house while I'm gone, and take care of my father.”Loren smiles.“When I say take care of him, I just mean... you know, keep him from doing anything crazy, nothing else.”Loren chuckles, bringing her hand to my cheek. “Nothing else. Don't worry, he's always avoiding me, and he's not my type anyway.”“Thanks Loren. I mean it. I know my place is here, but I can't just ignore this.”Loren glances over her shoulder, stepping forward and pulling me into a hug. She's... very soft.(cont)
>>39923560“You just worry about staying safe, Sief. I'll make sure this place is still standing when you get back.”I smile, putting an arm around her back. I hate to think the gossip that would get out if anyone saw this, but I can at least enjoy it for a moment, can't I?Or several, as it turns out, when Loren still hasn't let go.“Loren?”“Just a little longer,” she whispers, squeezing tighter against me. Oh spirits, I can feel everything.“You're doing that on purpose.”“I don't know what you mean,” Loren chirps, finally stepping back from the hug, the lingering warmth of her body remaining. She brings a hand up to her mouth as she laughs softly at my no doubt amusing expression. Seems she got the better of me once again.>End of Thread
...and that's that. Thank you all for playing, I can stick around for a short Q&A if people have any questions to ask me. Otherwise, next thread will be sometime next week, probably on a weekday. It warmed my heart to have so many players for once, so running this quest on Sundays can go fuck itself.
