You are Giles, Master Thief, babysitter extraordinaire, and professional bad influence. The job you took as a servant in the Royal Palace of Laust has taken an interesting turn. In just one day you’ve gone from servant, to servant who also has to babysit Princess Selene. It’s not all bad, though. She’s a cute kid who is easily distracted from her boredom by simple tricks and riddles, two commodities which you have in excess. She also has an interest in learning how to be sneaky, and you happen to be the best teacher around.Though you’ve yet to decide on a proper way to make your exit from the palace, you’re sure that you’ll find somethingBut time has never been a friend to you. And as it is wont to do, it is running out.But though it flows ever onwards, even time must dance on a Devil’s whim.>Previous threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=On%20a%20Devil%27s%20Whim>QM Twitter: https://twitter.com/SmileytheQM
“So how did this-“ Cedric says, pointing up to Selene, who is still on your shoulders. “-happen?”“We were playing hide and seek. She picked a really good hiding spot. I’d still be looking if she hadn’t revealed herself.” You say. It’s not that you don’t trust these two, it’s just that it’d be really hard to explain where you learned all of the things that you taught Selene earlier. Never mind the explanation of why you decided to teach said things to a princess. Better to avoid an awkward situation entirely than to try to downplay it once it’s happened.“Cedric! Did you know that Giles knows Lady Melissa?” Selene asks.“What? Woah, seriously?” Cedric asks.“Yes it turns out that he knows her VERY well.” Eleanor says, the familiar evil grin returning once more.“Not THAT well. And certainly not as well as you’re implying.” You say, biting back with a sharp glance.Eleanor looks disappointed, but comes right back. “So who was ‘he’ anyway?” She asks.Uhh…>[ ] That’s a little personal…>[ ] Give them the rough details.>[ ] Change the subject.

“That’s a little personal…” You say.“Awww. Ah well. Some things are like that I guess.” Eleanor says, her interest in the conversation lost.“So are you excited to see her again?” Cedric asks, obviously trying to change the subject before his sister bounces back.“Well…” You begin.“Lady Melissa is mad at Giles ‘cause he left. But he’s gonna ‘pologize and make it all better.” Selene proudly says from her perch.“There’s a bit more to it than that, but that sums it up well enough.” You say.“Maybe while you’re at it you can try to set Cedric up wi-“ Eleanor tries to say, but Cedric covers her mouth.“Thaaaaaat’s enough of that. I don’t think Giles wants to set up an old friend with someone he’s just met.” Cedric says, and then he releases his sister.Eleanor pouts. “Boo, you’re no fun at all today.” Her pout turns into a smile. “But I didn’t hear a no~” She practically sings that last bit, poking Cedric in the side for fun.>[ ] Join in on the teasing>[ ] Help Cedric out>[ ] Other

So, idea on the heist.Assuming that either there's some magical equivalent of photographs or that we can draw/paint fast enough. We have Selene borrow the crown so that we can make a picture for her to surprise her parents with, of her wearing the crown. We send her back with the picture, but use a Grinch-style excuse for why we need to keep the crown for a bit (the gems don't light on one side or some such). We sign the picture/painting with our calling card.
>>38775655Though this sounds very magical, I doubt it will actually work, as I don't think her mother dotes over her enough to let her take the crown, and would at least send a few guards with her.
“Are you sure, Cedric? It’s been a while, but I’m pretty sure you’d be her type.” You say.“Not you too man…” Cedric says.“Her type of what?” Selene asks, bending over and putting her face right in front of yours.“The type of boy that she likes” You say. That was a simpler question with less implications than the last one. You hope to hell that you never get another repeat of your pre-lunch conversation…Selene looks deep in thought for a moment, and then she sits back up. “Does Eleanor have a type?” She asks.Eleanor reels back, her face turning several shades of red darker than you’ve ever seen. This elicits a familiar evil laughter from Cedric.“Of course she does. His name is Marce-Gwah!” He begins, but is quickly cut off by Eleanor’s elbow in his gut.“That’s not something you should go around asking people, sweetie. And it's certainly not something you go around telling people.” Eleanor says, glaring at her brother the whole time.“Kay” Selene says.>[1/2]

“I wonder what my type is.” Selene ponders out loud.“I’m sure you’ll find out eventually.” Eleanor says, and then she gently nudges you with her elbow. “Maybe the answer is right under your nose.” She bursts out laughing.“That is not even close to being funny.” You say, glaring at Eleanor. “She’s like… uhh… How old are you anyway?” You ask Selene.“Mmmmmmmmmm…” She thinks, then holds six fingers up in front of your face. “This many.” She says.“And how many is that?” Eleanor asks.Selene pulls her hands back and works for a moment. “Six!” She exclaims happily.“That’s right!” Eleanor says, standing up on her toes to try and pat Selene on the head. Hmm, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to let the queen see you getting too friendly with Selene. Whatever they’re talking about must be important, as they don’t even seem to notice the 4 of you.“Aaand down you go.” You say, lifting the little princess off your shoulders and gently placing her on the ground.“Awww” She says, pouting and looking generally annoyed at the fact that she must once again use her own two legs. Then she looks over at Cedric and gives him the cutest little puppy-dog eyes.“Absolutely not.” Cedric says.“There, there.” Eleanor says, patting Selene on the head. “You can’t get a ride everywhere. And now that you’re back on the ground I get to do this again!” She says. You decide to leave those two to their business, as Eleanor seems to be enjoying herself. “So what were you talking to those guard about when we met up earlier?” You ask as you walk with him out of the kitchens.“A whole bunch of the interior guards are getting pulled out onto the perimeter. The captains are getting antsy, what with the upcoming party and all.” He says.“Well, I figured that much. But why load them all out into the perimeter?” You ask.Cedric looks around to make sure no one overhears. The kitchens are pretty loud, so there’s little risk of that in the first place. Then he leans in close. “It’s not just the captains. It’s everyone with something worth stealing the world over. Word is that The Gambler is on the last card in their deck, and nobody wants to go down in history as their last mark.”“So they’re moving guards to the perimeter to ensure that they don’t get in.” You say, holding your chin in a thoughtful manner. If only they knew.“If it was just one guy, we probably wouldn’t be so cautious. But we just don’t know anything about the Master Thieves, really.” He says, leaning back and shrugging. “Do they work together? How do they pick their targets? How many of them are there really? Selene seems very excited that she’ll get to go out and meet her. Apparently she doesn’t get to leave the castle that often. You aren’t sure if you should be honoured or weirded out that the Queen trusts you with this. After all, she’s known you for less than a day.Once the four of you are finished (once more, Selene finishes way before anyone), Cedric gets up to leave.“Going so soon?” Eleanor asks.“Yeah, my shift tomorrow starts before dawn and lasts much longer than I would ever choose to work. But that’s life you know?” He says. “Have a good time tomorrow, you guys.”Eleanor gets up and gives him a hug before he goes. “Good luck with your shift tomorrow.” She says.“Ugh… I may end up needing it.” He says, parting with his sister and heading for the door.“I’ll be sure to put in a good word with Lady Melissa for you.” You say.“Damn it man.” You hear him groan at your last bit of teasing for the night.Once he’s gone, Eleanor looks at you. “So what now?”“I dunno, Selene?” You say, figuring she might have something she wants to do. “Well, we should be getting this one to bed then.” You say.Eleanor smiles, gets up, and walks over to Selene. “Come on sweetie”Selene lazily looks up at Eleanor as lifts her up and carries her the way you’ve seen so many mothers do before. She then motions for you to follow her, and leads you up the central stairway to the top floor.“Selene’s room is this one.” She says, trying to sift through her pockets with her free hand. Eventually, she gives up and smiles at you.You roll your eyes and take the sleeping girl from her so she can get out her key, and then the two of you head inside. This room is just as large as the one that Louis Harthright is staying in, though it’s definitely… girlier. The walls are painted white and pink, and there are stuffed animals everywhere.“Wait there, I’ll go get her changed.” She says, grabbing Selene from you and heading off into one of the bathrooms, quickly opening a dresser drawer and pulling out what looks like a nightgown as she goes. You hear some fussing coming from inside the bathroom, and it gets louder and louder until you finally hear Selene shout “NO!”After that Eleanor pops her head out, looking more than a little frustrated. She then goes into the same drawer she went into earlier, rifles around a bit, and sighs. “Heh heh, it seems as though Selene got changed in her parent’s room this morning. When you reach the door, you knock on it just in case. When no one answers, you unlock the door and head inside.Sure enough, there’s a Selene-sized nightgown sitting on the bed. But you decide to take a look around first. The king and queen’s room has no real windows, instead the back wall is lined with nice, clear-glass doors. Out of curiosity you take a step outside. The doors have locks on them, but they’re unused at the moment. A quick inspection reveals that the lock itself is VERY simple. 5 maybe 10 seconds and you could have it open. The balcony itself juts out over the roof of the next floor. And going down you can see a clear path that you could easily use to hop all the way down to the ground. In other words: It’s perfect.>[1/2]
>>38779977>In other words it's perfectYes! Finally we find a escape path for us and the crown
What better exit is there than to steal a crown and make your escape through the very bedchamber of the people to whom that crown belongs? There’s no question about it. This is your way out.You stifle your grin as you head back inside, careful to close the glass door behind you. You then hop over to the bed, grab Selene’s nightgown, and head back to her room.“Found it.” You say when you enter the room, holding the garment out for Eleanor to take.Eleanor thanks you and heads back into the washroom. A couple minutes later she emerges with a contented, but still very tired little princess. With no fuss at all, she tucks Selene into her bed. And when she asks you to, you tell her the story about Selena the Dragon Slayer again. Though she does fall asleep before you can get to the good part. You and Eleanor then quietly make your way out of the room and lock the door behind you.“Thanks for the help” Eleanor says. “She can be a handful sometimes.”“No problem. It was technically you that was helping me, since it was my job to look after her. Oh yeah.” You say, handing back the key she gave you. You could keep it and see if she notices, but the lock it’s for is another weak one.She takes the key. “Thanks” She says, her face looking a bit flush. “I should get going now. Don’t want my mom to think I’ve been fooling around.” She says.“You mean you aren’t the type that goes gallivanting about all night? Well, you’ve been left to your own devices. Might as well complete your mental map of this place. The central stairway seems to be guarded everywhere but the ground floor, which is problematic because you need to come out of it on the top floor. A simple distraction might work, but there are bound to be less guarded passageways. Thus far you’ve only ever used those stairways when you were being lead, and you don’t remember them being as well guarded. It takes about two hours, but you finally have a solid idea of where the auxiliary stairways are. As well as a few routes between your target and your exit. Now you’re prepared. You know your plan. You’ll stick around after the party to clean up, and stay there until everyone but the night guards have gone to bed. Then you’ll pull out your usual outfit and get to work. You can enter the central stairway on the ground floor and make your way up, take the crown and then head back down to the ground floor. From there you’ll use any of the different pathways you’ve mapped out to go back up to the top floor, this part has a lot of leeway as the guard patrols at random.Once you’re at the top floor, you’ll enter the king and queen’s bedroom, make your way out through the glass doors, onto the balcony, and down across the rooftops. Once you hit the ground, you can scale the outer wall and head out of the city from there. That last part might be a bit tricky, as the perimeter guard has been bumped up. But you can do a quick inspection in that area before you leave for the docks tomorrow.>[1/2]

“Come on kiddo, let’s get you back to bed” You say, picking up the scared little princess. Selene clings onto you and buries her face into your shoulder as you walk, but she seems calm enough. This is something you’re more than used to. Back at the orphanage you were always just as light a sleeper as you are now. Anytime someone got up to do anything, you’d be awake. Whether it was late night shenanigans (which you’d occasionally help with, much to the ire of Father Pitre) or something like this, you’d always be the first and sometimes the only one on the scene. You make it back to her room in record time, using one of the pathways you memorized earlier. You find the door wide open. You figure that Selene probably didn’t close it, but you still flick a knife into your free hand as you enter. Only when you’re satisfied that you’re alone do you put it away. Getting caught off guard once is enough for one night.Once you’re sure the coast is clear, you shut the door and put Selene down in her bed. You have to gather up the covers, as one of them looks like it was hastily kicked off and the other one got dragged halfway to the door. Once you’re all set, you tuck her in and pull up a chair next to the bed. Then you tell her a story of the good old days (with the names altered, of course), back when it was you, Melissa, and Klaus all running together. The tale is about the time when you stole the Phoenix’s egg from right under the nose of the dragon Dalmad. You still have the egg, in fact you have the whole set. The eggs of the Roc, Phoenix, Aquila, Anzu, Hrafon, and Helian are all in your cloak. You miss those days. You miss them a lot…Once Selene is asleep, you sit back and you ponder. Something about that dream bothered you. It was too specific to be just a dream, and her description of the thing that killed her: A big guy with black breath. You know you’ve heard of something like that before…

You get up from your chair. You’d like to just stick around here, but your curiosity is getting the best of you.The library is on the second floor, and you make it down there in no time. The lock goes easily, and you enter. The stacks are all labeled, which is helpful. You immediately make your way to the section on plants and herbs.Medicinal plants, poisonous plants, etable plants, there it is…Dragon flowers. When a dragon dies, its essence returns to the earth. And the earth becomes tainted or blessed by it. There are hundreds of different dragon flowers, each with different properties. But you know of only one that can cause black breath.“The Breath of Rog” You whisper as you come to the page at last. There’s only one reason why anyone braves the glassy wastes that were once Elemeer, and this is it. The essence of this flower, if ingested, gives you a fraction of Rog’s strength. But in return you must share his fate.In other words: you become superhuman, and then you die. Only the worst kind of fanatic would actually use this stuff, just what kind of people are you dealing with here?Your curiosity sated, you put the old tome back where you found it and exit the library. Once the door is shut and locked behind you, you head down to your own bed. You pull your cloak out of your bag and fold it in on itself, then stuff the thin strip of fabric that’s left over down your pant leg. In a pinch, you can whip it out and throw it on, making your usual arsenal of throwing knives and your cane available to you.You hope it doesn’t come to that.Satisfied, you exit the commons and make your way back up to Selene’s room. Taking your seat in the chair next to her bad, you shut your eyes.Better to be here in case she has another nightmare. At least, you hope that’s all it was…
