Chapter X: I am still alive edition.Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: You decided to visit the gnoll tribe and to trade with them. You soon learned they would be moving the tribe as soon as you leave further away from you and to the East, where your old tribe had set up in the plains. You returned to the ruin and practiced alchemy once more, and after some failure, created a fully functional owl, and bound the elven scout's spirit to it. You can set it to scout any time you wish. And that is where Feral Necromancer Quest IX ended.Housekeeping:Character Sheet and Mechanics (update in a moment): http://pastebin.com/vBRyBWfKPrevious threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=feral+necromancerTwitter @DeadQM for session times and any updates.

>>38225760I missed you
>>38225885I think we all missed him, anon
You are Vlad Tepish.Your Holdings: A renovated ancient Elven ruin. A well hidden and protected cave, now housing liberated human slaves.Your minions: 40 normal undead (orcish, elven and human skeletons and zombies, 13 armed with bows, rest with crude melee weapons). Undead orcish shaman. Skeletal elk mount. You control 43/50 minions. Your control is absolute.Your relationships: Lathrien, your apprentice (agreeable), Ragda and Gerda, liberated old ladies of your tribe (friendly(ish)). Melandie, elven huntress (ally). Bathory, the spirit of your lover housed in her skull (agreeable). Bound spirit of an elven scout (bound to an owl homonculus). Bound spirit of a gnoll pyromancer (bound). Bound spirit of an orc demonologist (Bound). Bound spirit of a black dragon (bound). Elven tribe (open diplomacy), Gnoll tribe (allies/treacherous bastards), Human liberated slaves (likely allies).Your skills, stats, traits: In the pastebin above, along with your available spells and equipment.Your goals: Find a body for Bathory, achieve immortality, grow your legacy. You have ordered your troops to stand in formation, just this once. There is little use for it on the battlefield, when you seldom face any organized force and have no shields, and little worry for injury or casualties. When one falls, more shall take their place. In a way, it is a strange, accepting and multiracial. Orcs, elves, men and skeletons rotten beyond all recognition stand in front of you. It is impressive, if you do say so yourself. A gathering of this size would be all but impossible with the living. The orc zombie shaman still has even more intelligence than your other minions in him. He can still cast his magics, you tested it and it worked. He will never learn more than that, but you feel rather proud of yourself nonetheless. The forest around you answers to your call. Grass, fern, moss, weaker flora of all sorts has rotted away and become brown. (cont)

(cont)Brambles, thorns and strange sharp grass still manages to grow somehow, although you know it to be dead. The trees, you could not even tell they are dead, if not for the strange, dark energies they are giving off. Any man might fear walking the forest at night, but you are certain that anyone but you walking your forest would be unsettled, no matter how much light they brought with them.It feels like you have been idle for a long while. Too long. You have the skill and the faculties to create a body for Bathory. You only lack some essential resources. And you have much to bend towards achieving that goal.>Send the owl to scout>Go to the mountains. >MountainsYou would rather not deal with any dark forces you know. At the least, there is a chance that the mountains would offer you safe, eventless expedition. It could happen. You are bringing your full amount of minions, that's for certain. You shall go yourself, of course. Lathrien has become a valuable part of the group and the elven girl, Melandie, may be willing to come. You may be able to gather more allies, but if there is some group in the mountains, that would make you look even more aggressive than you are already going to appear. You gather your party, thinking it would be easier to dismiss them if you have issue with them than to call them if you need them and you set out due North. The ride to the mountains is longest you have taken since you were kicked out of your tribe what feels years ago. Sun sets and rises and you keep on going due North. On the eve of the third day you see the mountains in the distance, and by the fifth day you have reached them. They are glorious, but you are not here to sightsee. The mortal part of the group are all tired, yourself included. Your undead are as impassive as ever.>Break for a camp. >>38226520>Set the owl to find a cave.
>>38226520>send owl to look for cave, while also keeping a lookout for anything that looks like a shrine to a death god
Your companions are weary and you yourself are far from averse to the idea of taking some rest before venturing into the unknown darkness of the mountains. That is not to say you should waste the night entirely on frivolity and rest. You focus your mind and you set your minions to strike at the rock wall nearby, just outside of earshot. You do want to be able to sleep after all.You call the bound elf's spirit to you.'Fly. Look for a cave, or a deep canyon, or some opening in the rock wall. If you can, try to find one that goes quite deep.' 'Yes, Vlad Tepish.' He says and flies away. You might be trying to justify yourself, but you have the notion that with the ability to fly and the relative freedom you allow him, the elf is much happier than it has been in a long time. Good for him. 'We break for camp,' you say.'Yes! I was absolutely certain you'd tell us to go into the fucking mountain in the middle of the night.' Melandie says. 'The break will be welcome, but I would like to get this over with as fast as I can,' Lathrien says. You light a campfire, and gather some fir branches and moss to sleep upon. The ground here is rocky and it would be hard sleeping without the preparation. >Eat, chat, be merry>Set Lathrien to meditate and try to improve his shamanism>Set Lathrien to practice necromancy in whatever way>Set up a watch rotation and go to bed early>Other

A watch rotation is a given in an unknown territory, of course. But there is still plenty of daylight and you have grown to enjoy the company of your allies. That can wait until after you've had some food and talk.'Lathrien, how come you never picked up much magic from your elder? You have the skill for magic.' you say. 'I never cared for it. Illusions are stupid, nothing of substance can be created by them.' Lathrien says.'It does seem useful to me,' you say.'In a fight, sure, or a dark cave, but I had not seen a fight until after becoming your apprentice. It cannot create food, or heal the sick. It is useless for a tribe.' Lathrien says.'You are useless for a tribe,' Melandie says. 'I...' Lathrien says'Are you blushing?' Melandie says.'Children, I was hoping for a quiet night,' you say.'And here Lathrien goes, being all grumpy and stupid,' Melandie says. 'I am not grumpy, just honest,' Lathrien says. 'I am not grumpy, just honest,' Melandie says in a squeaky voice. 'Vlad Tepish, make her stop!' Lathrien says. 'I sincerely doubt I can do that,' you say. >'Lathrien and Melandie, sitting in a tree...'>'You are progressing quite well in your studies, Lathrien.'>'You need to focus more on your studies, Lathrien.'>Write in conversation options.

>>38227169Oh god that would be great I'll back this.
>>38227169Let me tell you a story children. It is said in the ancient legends, that strong emotions can inflence magic. Hate, envy, joy, and sometimes, sometimes, love. It is said the love can make peculiar things happen, it can rearrange magic it self int peculiar shapes like.. like... WHAT IS THAT!?
>>38227169that would be entirely inappropriate.
'We had a saying in our tribe, 'The kids who fight, make love when grown up', it doesn't translate well to elven, I know, but...' you say. 'You did NOT just say that, Vlad Tepish!' Lathrien says. 'Oh! So I am so horrible you would get mad at Vlad Tepish at the insinuation that I am attractive?' Melandie says. 'Attractive has nothing to do with it! You're an asshole!' Lathrien says.'I'm the asshole? I hunt, I gather roots and berries, I keep you fed, and you just sit there and make it drizzle!' Melandie says. 'Seriously, guys, just go behind some ferns and get it over with,' you say. You get a good minute of awkward silence. It is better than the bickering, as far as you are concerned. The mountain air must be good for you, as you had not felt quite this relaxed since... Well, since Bathory, of course. Your thoughts become steel once more, but you let them relax. Perhaps you can even make your undead perform romantic theater for the two elves. Shame they are busy. 'Lathrien has been quite busy, you know, Melandie. He has really come far in his training,' you say. 'Pah, from our camp I remember him running away into the woods rather than train more days than not.' Melandie says. 'It is true. Vlad Tepish is teaching me good, useful magic. Maybe if you had the talent...' Lathrien says. 'And here we go again. I have plenty of talents, but none of them involve sitting around all day and cutting myself.' Melandie says. 'If you had the patience... No, I apologize. I cannot fight you any longer.' Lathrien says. 'That skill will come in handy later,' you say.'I give up! I'm going to sleep!' Lathrien says.>Talk more>Set up watches, go to sleep

You feel a little like keeping the conversation going, but with Lathrien apparently keeping true to his word and going to sleep and both you and Melandie quite tired you bid her to sleep and take the first watch. The sun goes down and you just sit there and wait in silence, alone with your thoughts. It is not a bad life you have made for yourself. You have made mistakes, but you are doing your best to fix them. You have the nagging feeling that something horrible is going to happen, but write it off as garden variety cynicism. The hours do stretch long, even with the lightness of your heart. There is not much you think about other than restoring your Bathory to life.Roll awareness 1d20+2 DC 16

DOUBLE CRITFAIL PARTYGood news: you have gained Awareness 2 (somehow)Bad news:The trip was too much for you. The hours pass and long before you are supposed to wake Melandie up you pass out. You sleep without dreaming. You wake up with the sunrise, to see Lathrien and Melandie already up and chatting. 'So, um, eventful watch?' Melandie says. 'Fuck. We are alive, at least I guess,' you say.'You could have asked me to take the first watch is all.' You double check all your belongings and then...No. That is not good. You do not feel the connection to any of your undead except for your elk mount. You rush to where you left them and see nothing. 'But there's no way to do that,' Lathrien says.'Just because there is no way you could do it doesn't mean no one could,' you say. 'But that would mean they are as good as you,' Lathrien says.'At the least. We still have a job to do. First thing, we learn what the owl found. Then we hunt all the animals we can find and I raise them as replacement,' you say.'Just kill them? That's a bit cruel,' Melandie says.'Yes, well, I am in no mood to get killed by my own minions and I do not see any fresh corpses lying about,' you say.'Fine. I do not like it, but fine,' Melandie says. You call the owl. 'What did you see in the night?' 'Found some caves. Some humanoids were skulking about. Then I went for a hunt, as my job was done.' Maybe he does still resent you. Not that you can blame him. Or maybe there was no malice in his actions.'Fly! See if you can find my minions or any more of those humanoids. The floors of the cave and the absolute darkness are very different to sneaking about in a forest and you feel that you may be making more noise and with the acoustics of the place it might be carried further on. Nonetheless, the sound of the tools and work drowns out any noise you make easily enough. When you get close you hear gruff conversation, shouting and direction. You see some of the strangest humanoids. They remind you most of humans, but short and fat, no, stout. Curiously, you see no cloth and little leather, with the majority of their clothing made of iron rings or plate. It is nowhere near as exquisite as the elven armours you have seen in your books, but seems just as practical. They also have an absurd amount of body and facial hair, used as padding under the armour. They are digging with fairly basic, but functional tools. It seems you were right. This is not the single, powerful necromancer you feared. Rather, it seems each one of them knows a little necromancy. With the disarray you caused you take control of your minions, and even manage to grab a few dwarven zombies as a bonus. The animals tear into the dark elves in a frenzy, and though no elves have fallen yet, the animals keep them more than distracted enough to make your work easier yet. You know they will try to take control of the animals soon, but they do not have the shaman training you do, and for them they will be much more difficult to control. You control 50/50 maximum minions. He tries. And fails.'Ha! Knew you were all talk,' Melandie says.He tries much harder. You feel the strings of power work towards the animals, and connect with them. You bind one of their spirits at random. There is a somewhat familiar feeling to it that you would rather not investigate it. As you think you could trade the head with the dwarves, you bind the spirit to its owner's dagger, a wicked looking thing, but well crafted and not magical as far as you can tell. Not until you're done with it.You have your undead destroy the undead dwarves to replace them with the remaining drow necromancers.>NOTE: to raise the remaining 9 with magical capability would take 18/50 available minion slots. Confirm the number you would like to raise, assuming the rest of the heads will be traded to dwarves.

It is disconcerting how much they look and move just like when they were alive, but they obey you well enough. You take five heads to take to the dwarves.Having recovered your army you move back towards the entrance, and meet up with the dwarves on your way there.'What would you give me for these?''Ha!
