You greet the sun as you always do.Which is to say-Yawning, stretching, covered in people trying to stay warm and full of regret that you need to get up.The sharp scent of blood pulls you free from your reverie, and you wince as you tilt your head side to side, cracking your neck.Even with your clean up attempts last night, you're still fairly coated in dried blood, the tang of iron brushing your nose. You groan and lean back, stretching as best you can without moving your hanger-ons. So I did a bit of searching regarding hydras (and other mythological creatures, but not relevant at the moment).I found that 1: They hate crocodiles and will attempt to eat their entrails. And 2: if you were poisoned by one, their liver can help cure you. We'll know next time.>>37004670>A bit of scouting might be healthy. You left a rather large amount of meat on the ground.>Speaking of meat- Breakfast.

>>37004767>1: They hate crocodiles and will attempt to eat their entrails. And 2: if you were poisoned by one, their liver can help cure you.Eh, the Hydra of myth is a unique creature, and didn't even live anywhere near crocodiles. Surely a whole bunch of stuff was made up using Hydras later, but that doesn't need to mean anything for this quest. It might appear as a nod to a particularly famous version, I expect a whole bunch of D&D stuff to appear here, but nothing beyond that.

Post-christmas quiet, apparently.Did everyone get what they want?I'm waiting for my gift of healthy wolfgirl.

You shuffle snoozing monsters, groping for a particular web-wrapped package. You find it, tear some of the silk free, and start chomping on a thick bear steak. It's only seconds before you've finished- YOu need a lot more than a single slab to keep you fed, after all. And you're hungry. And in a bit of a hurry, as well. You shuffle a bit in each direction, slowly standing. No need to wake people up just yet. You pull each leg further as you move, delicately scuttling over the sleeping group and pulling yourself onto the trunk proper. After that, it's a short trip to the forest floor. The sunlight isn't quite penetrating the forest here. A few beams trickle through the dense foliage, but you're too close to the wendigo territory now. You watch the trees in awe as you move. This, this is nature unrestrained- gnarled roots crushing stone, trees far older than any you've seen fighting each other for light and water and survival. There's a silence beginning to creep in with the daylight- A stark opposite from your own piece of the woods. You skitter along a bit faster. Your nose leads you to the site of last night's battle with ease. The bear is gone. The ground beneath where it fell is soaked with blood, bits of bone and fur too small to bother with strewn across the ground. Furrows are drawn through the dirt, easily a few feet deep, branches broken and torn all about the circle. You shiver.>Recover your boat. It'll be easier just to carry it everywhere.>Head back, get a move on. >Wake them with breakfast. A minute of eating will save you time later.>Other (?)

It's a bit of work to carve your boat free of the tree. More so because it's full of stuff, and you wind up covering yourself in bags and pouches before you even start cutting it down. You end up looping thread over a sturdy branch and making yourself a very amateur pulley, lowering the boat to the ground with care. You raise it over your head and set forth. Straight back to the other tree.Yawning faces greet you. Sara murmurs something about bears and sleeping as she rubs her eyes, and you start the process of lowering people to the ground below. With everyone safely anchored to the earth via gravity and also their feet, you urge them on, into the woods. Meat and rations are handed out as you move- Nin takes to the air, fluttering into the leaves to find her own meal. Jin has settled behind Sara, feeding Sheszka, one piece at a time. Lann moves up beside you, compass in hand. She's squinting at the surface in the dark, and you hold out a hand, lighting it ablaze. "Thanks.""Mhm. Are we heading the right way?"The elf chuckles a bit to herself."Well, I don't know where we are, or where we're going..."You snort."... But we need to just head north, and we're already between the lakes, yeah?""So we are going the right way, yes?""For a given amount of right, I guess?"You roll your eyes.>Pick up the pace! Have to wonder if there aren't any arachne or harpy or wolf (etc) groups that forgot why eating sentients is bad after the collapse of the city.Like, they don't deliberately hunt sentient creatures, but if they find a dead one or get into a fight and kill one, they wouldn't have a problem eating it.With regards to the nasty evolutions that they get from eating sentients, either they haven't (re)made the connection between those evolutions and eating sentients (they think it's a curse for something else or just see it as something that happens at random when you're due for an evo) or they see those evolutions in the same way as they see other evolutions.
>>37006811>Follow through with operation overground.Be honest Lann, you want a ride on the boat spider!
>>37006811>Follow through with operation overground.Stash the boat in this tree. If we decide to take the return trip by river again, we can come back for it.
>>37006811>Follow through with operation overground.I arbor deep feelings for this plan.
>>37006861I figure its just not a big problem because most monsterfolk live in their own bubbles in the forest that sometimes overlap. So arachne, moths and harpies all still know that stuff, and with the exception of Arachne/Lizard conflict never get to opportunity.Additionally, sentients just aren't very good prey animals, so it most likely never becomes a issue, its only bad if you make a habit of it, and its just really unusual and mosly not worth it to go out of your way to eat other sentients, unless you do it for culural reasons like the Lizards.
>>37006811>Other (?)Test to see if the overground can even sustain this much weight. If you fall, be embarrassed and continue on the ground.
>>37006811>operation overgroundAny reason why we don't stash the boat in an earthen dome and mark the place? It's an unnecessary burden and we risk it getting damaged in a fight...
>>37006861According to the Ask, Arachne that hunt sentients like that are exiled. The fact that a policy exists means some have done this.Likely other races have too.We may run into a rabid Goul-Arachne some day.
>>37006953I support stashing the boat. We can pick it up later.
>>37006811>Follow through with operation overground.
>>37006953It could get damaged or dug up or any other sort of thing can happen to it while we are gone, and we only have the one boat.
>>37006626>>37006665>>37006709Some time ago Gin adopted a little girl, that is now training to be swole. After awhile the whole party began to dote on the little girls as fa/tg/uys are known to do. See as what was meant to be a one off background character became a party cohort I started making up backstory for her on the fly. So of course she was apart of a street urchin gang that kept her alive and was her family, they also ran afoul of a group of ogres and had to split up for safety and out of fear. So decided to track down all of the kids and bring her, her family back. For reasons I am still not clear on they decided the best way to do this was to open an orphanage as they apparently. They have found some of her family but not all yet, they now also have a gaggle of street urchins that do odd jobs and run messages. One of the Ho's Dr. Love stole from another pimp is now running the orphanage, she never wanted to be a Ho, and now I need to think up a back story for her too.
>>37006954>We may run into a rabid Goul-Arachne some day.Not even sure they actually become rabid, it might be that it only bcomes worse and worse with several evolutions, and since Arachne don't evolve alot, they never find out its actually a problem.Which would explain why theey are nonchalant about eating Lizards.
>>37007013As for the Noble Spider Lady, a Noble (Spider) Family of the city wanted to get in on the Caffeine deal, they were offering moderate protection from the fuzz and additional resources as long as they got a set amount every month to export, the Mothia took the deal while expressing among themselves how to fuck this deal over the second Tim figures out that whole exporting and shipping issue they have. This being a noble family however, and being spiders with fucktons of kids they wanted to seal it with a marriage. So naturally the Spider Daughter on question is a widow that is larger then all of them and things the Rainbow moth is the cutest thing ever, just to have Dr. Love the receiving end of all the awkward flirting for once. He was not happy and beginning to worry about his chastity. And that is when Nye speaks up. Now Nye is the fluffiest of the Moths, and then he rolls to seduce the spider girl and crits. So now Nye is engaged to a Noble spider girl with a fluffy fetish. Now I just need to figure out Spider wedding dresses...

>>37007027>Noble spider girl with a fluffy fetishThis is brilliant
>>37006999What are the odds of random monsters actively investigating a seemingly normal hill who are also capable of digging through a thick layer of earth?Last night we almost lost the boat in that bearfight... had our webbing snapped it would have plunged to the ground.I don't think we should be spending our time carrying a boat and possible guarding it in a fight... our wolfgirl hasn't really got time to spare.
>>37007027>spider wedding dressesTHE MOST HUGE.I mean, they have infinite high quality fabric! Also probably pretty revealing because well tailored silk, even when it covers everything, can really show off that figure.
>>37007097>investigating a seemingly normal hillA hill that shows up over night isn't "normal", we can assume the animals in this forest know the terrain well enough that they would be curious about it. Not to mention> Furrows are drawn through the dirt, easily a few feet deepSome things in this forest can very well damage the boat while its underground without actively aiming to.Its not a huge chance, by any means, but its a risk I see no reason to take. Even when attacked, we got more then enough abilities to fight at range.
>>37007097I dunno, the chance of giant moles living in this place doesn't seem so small to me.
>>37007027>The fluffiest of the Moths seduces the spider girl with a fluffy fetish.I LOVE IT!>expressing among themselves how to fuck this deal over the second Tim figures out that whole exporting and shipping issueI have to ask, did none of them see the HORRIBLE flaw in this plan? This is a family of Arachne. Not even counting the wealth and political power, this is a family of unstoppable Apex Predators. If you fucked them over on a deal, it would only take one of them to come round and slaughter everyone.Hopefully the Lady Spider will keep Nye and his friends on the straight and narrow, preventing them from causing tpk by Spider.
>>37007186I think their most likely avenue of not-dying is the fact spiders might just not want to kill someone over something like this.Especially if one is married to 'em.Then it's just an awkward family circumstance.
>>37007186>I have to ask, did none of them see the HORRIBLE flaw in this plan? This is the group of Moths that had the squirrel breeding pit, turned an aquifer into Alcohol and got the Chief of police drunk, so no I don't think they thought thus through, on the other hand Nye seems to like his new fiancee so I'll see how this goes.
>>37007107>>spider wedding dresses>THE MOST HUGE.Can you imagine the train? An endless stream of shimmering silk, carried in by a hundred bridesmaids.
>>37006927Yeah, I figured the separation would probably keep it from happening to most, but I'm thinking of Sheszka and the pack wars - if there was a pack of wolves that just lost a good bit of their knowledge like the Lizards did, got into a big fight and ate the dead because "IT'S MEAT AND RIGHT THERE" or somesuch, then woke up the next day and there have been several evolutions (with the sentient eater evo being only one of them). That kind of thing - I doubt they'd really be able to regain the understanding of why that particular evolution occurs and thus how to avoid it (if they even see that evo as bad), especially with the general attitude towards evolution that we've seen being "It's something that happens for reasons".>>37007019That as well. Given how few evolutions really happen, it's doubtful that any group that forgets is really ever going to remember without outside information.
>>37007259Actually I don't imagine that the train is all that long.Just the central dress itself will be huge. Like a goddamn tent.
>>37007281>but I'm thinking of Sheszka and the pack warsI don't think fighting packs would eat the dead of eachother, for similar reasons why most animals in the real world don't.Its just not very healthy, in desperation they might, but if they are that starving they probably won't win a fight to eat the dead anyway. It probably happens to some extent, but without knowing exactly how rabid/insane those evolutions become, its hard to say if they would realise its something bad at all.Arachne do, because they have a very solid cultural continuum from the city days, but the very wild werewolves, might actually consider a ghoul evolution not so bad.
>>37006954>Arachne that hunt sentients like that are exiled. The fact that a policy exists means some have done thisThats probably not so much because of the sentient eating, as much as its for the sentient killing.Arachne mostly encounter eachother and moths and harpies, which would most likely be the main prey of such a arachne. So its more exiling a serial killer than for its eating habiits.
So, uh.How do we make the forest safe for moths without effectively killing the entire ecosystem?
>>37007558It's intelligent beings that actively hunt them for their value that's the problem.Establishing law and order so that no race of our Empir- no race of the Forest is hunted would make them safe.Well, relatively safe.
>>37007656>intelligent beings are the problemWell, they're A problem, but pretty much the entire ecosystem wants to eat them too.>>37007635What about TREE BRIDGES?
>>37007695There's not much we can do about the ecosystem eating them, since its trying to everything else too, but we can minimize the exploitation by sentients.
>>37007732Well SOMEhow in the last kingdom they managed to make it so moths could go around without being eaten by lightning tigers.Did they just kill all the animals? Or what?
>>37007732>>37007656So we are in agreement then.Anyone tries to kidnap Nin in our travels, the entire kingdom/country/continent dies as a matter of principle.
>>37007558Invent some form of light-weight, yet powerful weapon. Ideally ranged and has the potential for rapid fire and/or a large magazine...
>>37007773Nah, anon. Don't even joke about that.
>>37007695>Well, they're A problem, but pretty much the entire ecosystem wants to eat them too.Yeah, there's lots of wild animals that would be happy to eat them if they crossed paths. But they are not being actively hunted by wolves. Taking basic safety precautions against wild animals is well within their means. The Moth Village had guards. It's not like many humans or kobolds are going to make it into the heart of Arachne territory to kidnap them. The guards are mainly to take care of stray wild animals.
>>37007831I would like to reach a state where a kid can wander off out of the range of the guards WITHOUT being eaten by a wolf or something.
You look from the boat to the moth and back again. In the end, your friends safety wins out over convenience. You bury the boat, using your magic to build a marker over top of it- You need to find it on the way home, after all. After that, it's simple to get everyone into the treetops. You end up the same way you started the day: Covered in your friends.Sara keeps the sleeping Sheszka for the time being, leaving you with the rest. You skitter through the branches, keeping your weight across as many as you can as you move. The ground blurs far below, and it grows darker with every step.Comparatively darker. You can see just fine, but there's no sun to be found here. The group moves in silence. You're fairly certain Jin has gone back to sleep, but you don't want to distract yourself at the moment. Moving this fast in the trees isn't that easy. Not without Mom's webbing building roadways. The spider equivalent of roadways, anyway. An overpass. That's what they were called!Overpasses. This isn't in anyway relevant to our situation. You draw up short, and Sara bumps into you, jostling your cargo."Lyra?""What is it?""Lyra?""It is glowing. You spread you legs wide to keep your balance, dipping your whole body forward.Sara waits patiently behind you, while Lann tries to peer around you to see what's going on below.Pulling back a few stray branches gives you something to look through.YOu poke your head into the gap and...The forest below is lit with a green glow, a soft light coming from every corner of the world beneath your feet. Leaves drift gently through the still air, floating to the floor so far away, a dark, fluttering counterpoint to the green light.Your eyes comb the trees, the rocks, looking to find the source of the illumination. It's everywhere, you realize. Moss. The moss is glowing. Crawling across the trees and stones alike, the moss glimmers in the shadow of the canopy, lighting the forest with a quiet sheen. You pull your head, careful to keep your hair free from the branches grasp.>Keep going. You twist, turning to face your friends."The trees and stones below are covered in moss, yes? That is what is glowing."Lann tucks an errant lock of hair behind one ear as she replies."Glowing moss?"You nod."Yes, yes. Does anyone know anything? Like... If the wendigo have lowing moss. Or if it's poisonous, or healthy, or a marker. I am tired of things being poisonous.""You're bloody poisonous.""I am venomous, thank you.""There's a difference?""I have to bite you for it to matter.""Well, don't do that.""But what if I think you'd taste good?""This isn't up for discussion."Nin is giggling the whole way through."Is that a no, then?""I think I was fairly clear about you-""The moss, yes. Noone knows anything about the moss?"You get a few murmurs, shaking heads."The books are old, yes? There isn't anything much about wendigo."Nin chirps in after Sara."And they have been gone for hundreds of years."You sigh, crossing your arms."So we're blind, then.""No we can all-""Well then, forwards!"You scuttle deeper into the woods, following Lann's compass. The light below doesn't die, but it gets dimmer as you travel- until you find a new colour."Lyra.""Yes?""The moss is blue, now."You peer down. The moss is most certainly blue. >Maybe the colours mean different things?>Is the moss a different colour, or does the moss change colours?>Head down. >>37009592Meh, we've both been making jokes like that since we first went out together. If she thought we were REALLY going to eat her, I doubt we'd have hung out a second time. Let alone her joining us into the deep woods.
>>37009637Fairly sure we can choose to inject venom or not.Nothing preventing us from nibbling on her ears.
You know, I sort of consider lann a special guest party member.I feel very strongly that we won't have her around after this or the next adventure, and she'll go off to do her own thing.
>>37009560I am worried that she will jump in fear and nick herself on our fangs and die horribly from our super venomwe should get some sort of immunity to arachne venom ring to let people wear before we tease them (also for kisses)
>>37009724Probably. I'm surrpised she came along for even as much as this trip, I would have thought we would only get her for our trip to the city.
>>37009752>and nick herself on our fangsWe have to choose to inject the venom, even if she cuts herself on our fangs, she won't get poisoned. Unless we used them recently, maybe.
>>37009782did QM explicitly say so?I know we can manually release venom. But that is not the same as pure manual control. Typically for venomed animals there is both a manual release and an automatic one (same with spit really, you can intentionally willingly squirt spit from the glands that produce it into your mouth, or it can happen automatically, you can't stop the automatic)

You give your friends a once-over, double checking they're all mostly secure. You don't want to be ferrying people around if you need to fight. Or run. You creep down the tree, picking your way carefully around the moss, one step at a time.It looks... mostly similar to the stuff you passed, aside from the colour. The glow is a bit dimmer, as well. You're not a moss scientist. Or any sort of scientist. You reach the ground without stepping in any glowing plant life, so that has to count for something. Here on the floor, though, the effect of the glow is almost like a sky all its own- The canopy too far and too dark to properly see, and the glow of the moss on the ground. It reminds you of home, in a way. The glow of the city against the night sky, the stars invisible for the blaze of humanity. It's a strange thought. The stones are piled. Stacked atop one another, forming pyramids and little structures beneath the moss. Wherever you are, there's something moderately sentient nearby. It's encouraging. You're about to poke some moss- with a silk glove, of course- when a deep and creaking voice echoes out from behind you."Little Spider.... You are far from home."

>>37010703I'll tell you about the Chang Nam then. It's an incredibly small (think cat or mouse sized) elephant with a fish tail. Also venomous tusks, because back in the day making your mythological creatures venomous was the trendy thing to do. It is otherwise a docile herbivore.
>>37010416>You've got control over your venom. Is it to the point where, if someone punches us in the mouth and accidentally impales their finger on one of our fangs, we can choose to not inject venom through that fang?
>>37011079....Wat?First of all, how would you impale a finger on a fang when punching someone?Second, why wouldn't we want to inject venom into that someone?
>>37011121not that guy, but A. tooth-stabs are incredibly common when you are punching people in the mouthandB. most times, if you are punching somebody in the mouth and they are punching you in the mouth, it's a friendly drunken disagreement with no lethal intent.
>>37011135>most times, if you are punching somebody in the mouth and they are punching you in the mouth, it's a friendly drunken disagreement with no lethal intent.I would heavily disagree with that.It certainly happens, but most times when you punch someone in the mouth, its because you want to fuck that guy up. Friendly drunken disagreements would usually ppunch against the jaw or torso to avoid the kind of serious injury that breaking someones teeth can result in.>. tooth-stabs are incredibly common when you are punching people in the mouthYeah, no, they aren't. Cutting yourself on a tooth is, but IMPALING your finger on someones canines is rather unlikely.
>>37011121>First of all, how would you impale a finger on a fang when punching someone?by hitting them at the correct angle. this super common IRL in fights when punching people in the mouth>Second, why wouldn't we want to inject venom into that someone?1. murder during a barfight is bad2. what if it wasn't a punch by another accidental hit? like, you spooked a friend from behind going "boo" while goosing them, and they jump, and they hit you in the mouth and impale on a fang? (this actually happened to me IRL, with different people, being both the spooked and the spookee... only without fangs of course. i am not a giant spider)
>>37011196An impalement on a human canine is a cut, anon. The same thing goes for with a fang. And statistically, the VAST majority of punching in mouths in most countries aren't with lethal intent.

>>37011248>And statistically, the VAST majority of punching in mouths in most countries aren't with lethal intentI would be very interested in seeing that statistic then.
>>37011260It's the same statistic as everything like this.Common, non-harmful problems occur infinitely more than actual aggressive ones.In all fields.
>>37011256One of them muscle guys. The kind who have curly moustaches and wear leotards. That's the very first one off the top of my head.
>>37011260That is like asking for the statistic of how often mcdonnalds employees wish death on someone who asks for extra gravy on the fries. They are just not inherently connected things. Further exacerbated by the fact you put the word "intent" there. However, what we can tell is:1. 4.7 per 100,000 is the murder rate in the USA2. A bar fight is tried as a battery assault case (NOT an attempted murder case, not even aggrevated assault)3. 229.1 per 100,000 is the rate of aggrevated assault in the USA4. I can't find the battery assault case count, but it should be much higher than aggravated assault.
