Trailing her, Jemma felt something was off, and you posited the idea of the Acamoth not working alone. The others freaked out, as your theory seemed to be correct: a Forces Mage was summoning up the approaching snowstorm, masking the ritual the Acamoth had set up over the past few months. With a quickly dwindling set of options forced upon you, Jemma takes you and Elizabeth to the skies while the rest of the Guardians group travels along the ground, having tracked Garen's location (and by proxy, Sarah) to a nearby park district. Diana barely completed the anti-black hole device, handing it off to you as you took to the air. The werewolves are on the way (notifying them where her lair is at) but it will take some time. After several minutes, you three land, with Jemma splitting off to deal with the Forces Mage helping the Acamoth. With the aid of some fleeing spirits, you quickly track down the activation circle, as bodies and soul stones are powering it. You analyze the circle, noting that it is missing one final component: you. The Acamoth appears, trying to capture you and complete the ritual, of forcing open a portal to the Abyss and bring about the apocalypse, as untold swarms of spirits and demons and eldritch horrors flood the land.> And now, back to the action!
You know that the plan was to have the werewolf shamans help you out with weakening the Acamoth's defenses as you began the exorcism. But with the only thing stopping the apocalypse being little, naive Michael Santos, sometimes you just have to wing it."Go big or go home," you mutter to yourself, as you begin to summon up all of your magical might. Elizabeth nods in agreement, as she sees you begin to glow white, eyes blazing with raw magical power."<WHAT ARE YOU DOING, LITTLE MAGE,>" it asks, black tendrils lashing out at you. They disintegrate before they even reach you, as your ballooning magical aura buffers them away."<I am the light of salvation, the hope for the Fallen World! I preserve the harmony between the Material and the Shadow, and you are an Abomination to both!>" You step closer, hands blazing with white flame. It senses what you are doing, and immediately backs up, summoning up the black hole orb. Snow begins to suck into it, as she lobs it at you, still retreating from you and out of the circle. "<NOT TODAY, MAGE!>"Elizabeth predicts the move, running in front of you, briefcase clicking open. A second black orb shoots out, intercepting the first. The two balls of Death collide into each other, slightly balloon out and then collapse in on each other. The resulting pull of gravity as the orbs destroy each other throws you into the air, as Elizabeth collapses to the ground by the sudden pull. You use this sudden thrust of momentum to your advantage, as your hands reach towards Sarah. Your feet hit the ground running, hands grasping onto her face. Instantly she screams in pain, soulless eyes oozing black goo."<I am the Sword of Justice, the Angel of Vengence! SARAH JESSICA PENNINGTON!>"
The black ooze immediately disappears, revealing the scared, watering eyes of a terrified child, tears streaming down her face. She stares into yours, as the swirling cloud of darkness surrounding her soul fades away, the tiniest flicker of a violet light buried deep within her."<I banish this evil from within you!>" You channel all your magic, all your will, all your hope and anger and righteous vengeance into her body, seeking out any hidden corner the Acamoth might try to hide in, to remain attached to this poor girl's soul. Wherever the holy light shines, the shadows flee, as wisps of smoke flow out of her mouth, tendrils of black ooze snaking out of every pour in her body and coalescing into a solid form behind her. The face slowly takes shape, a spiked tongue slithers out of its mouth, baring sharp fanged teeth, eyes blazing black and red, its hair beginning to smoulder and horns spiking out of its skull. The spirit grows in size, soon ballooning to over 10 feet tall, scaled tail sprouting from its back and snaking around it's spiked claws for feet, skin turning blood red and rippling with muscle. It's hands form last, as long digits turn sharp with a black, bone-like appearance."DIE, MAGE!" It thrusts one hand through the back of Sarah, bursting out of her stomach, spraying you with her blood and guts, piercing your belly. You grit your teeth in pain as the tendrils disintegrate, your magical aura slowly fading. Sarah's eyes flutter shut, her body growing limp in your arms."Michael!" Elizabeth runs up to you, as all snow and movement around you stops, the telltale sign of her Time Stop spell. You look down, seeing the chain shirt barely being held together, as you feel the wound in your belly send shocks of pain and endorphins running through your body. "Oh God, you're hurt..."> Save her, I'm not done yet (8d10, Spirit + Gnosis + 1 die from the enchanted knife)> Save her, then heal me> Heal me quickly, then help her> Other
> Meta post:Michael currently has 2 lethal damage inflicted upon him. He currently has 8 mana left, spending 3 Mana to fuel the exorcism spell. Sarah has 5 Aggravated damage and is unconscious from the shock and damage done to her. Elizabeth is unharmed. There's no telltale signs of the Acamoth being injured, but he's clearly pissed at you.The circle is still glowing, the ritual still marching onward.

"Save her, I'm not done yet." You brandish the knife and channel more Spirit magic into it, the blade now giving off a faint white glow. You step out of the Time Stop bubble, knowing just how large she can make it, and slice into the Acamoth's chest, a large gash of black ooze seeping out of it. The fiend roars in rage and pain, grabbing onto your left arm. You go to break the grasp but he squeezes tight, as the bones in your arm snap like they were twigs. You yell in pain as the blade comes down, slicing off his right hand at the wrist. The Acamoth howls in pain, more black ooze pouring out of the open wound. "I am Raguel, you fucking piece of shit!" You clench your left hand in a fist, channeling more magic into it, bearing your teeth to drown out the pain. You slam it into his face, brass knuckles glowing white, the sound of cartilage breaking in your hand. The Acamoth recoils in shock, his skin smouldering as flecks of it begin to turn to dust."I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU ARE, YOU'RE DEAD!" He grabs onto your right hand, thrusting his fist through the knife. With one swift pull he twists it out of your hand, as you let go before he rips your hand (and possibly your entire right arm) out of it's socket. >>36703678>And using willpowercan't, we used willpower already to remove it from sarah, we now can't use willpower again for the rest of this scene.

And even after it broke our arm, we decided to allow it an extra counter attack (melee instead of ranged blast) for a mere +14% boost to attack (8 vs 7 dice)

"Just sit down and die, you fucking monster!" You bundle up more magical power and thrust it into your one good arm, channeling it into the brass knuckles. You wind up and hit him in the face, and while he recoils in shock, it's not nearly as damaging as your spirit-infused attacks were. It grins, leaning in and delivering a headbutt. You recoil in shock as your forehead's skin splits open, blood gushing from the wound. You try to wind up for another punch, but he grabs your fist midway, pulling your arm down and yanking hard on it. You feel your shoulder pop out of its socket, right arm going limp. You howl in pain as you back away, trying to get some distance from the Acamoth."THIS HAS BEEN FUN, MAGE." The demon walks up, clawed feet crunching in the fallen snow. "BUT NOW, I'LL TAKE YOUR SOUL." His hand glows black, and you feel a strong tug on your very being. How much time does Elizabeth needs to tend Sarah's wounds anyway? She had a time stop spell going, hadn't she?
>>36703954Based on the damage you saw, you think it'd take almost an hour of non-stop healing to restore all the damage. And unlike with Jemma, it will take nearly the full hour as she needs to re-grow several organs before she can even begin to heal the skin. And you aren't sure how long she can keep the time stop spell going AND healing her at the same time.

>>36704149What about Garen? Is his body there? Could we return his soul so he could heal Sarah while Elizabeth would wreck the shit out of acamoth?
'Well, this could've gone better,' you think to yourself. You channel Spirit magic into your left fist, shooting it at the Acamoth. It deflects the bolt with it's glowing hand, taking a step back in shock and pain, the black glow dissipating slightly. The tug on your soul weakens, and you begin to run back away from him. As you do, you shoot a quick glance at the circle it had set up while inside Sarah's body. The stones themselves are still there, and the bodies are lying there, wrapped in robes of some kind. You've read about how the removed souls of a body yearn to go back to their flesh homes, but you've never attempted it before. But these Thyrsus Mages might be better equipped to deal with the Acamoth than you, and with no help on the horizon, you aren't left with many options.> Try to restore their souls (7d10, Spirit + Gnosis, 1 Mana used, 6 left)> Fire another Spirit Blast (7d10, Spirit + Gnosis, 1 Mana used, 6 left)> Retreat more> Other

The glow in the gem fades, as the soul inside returns to the body it was forcibly removed from. The body breathes in deeply, as though someone was waking up from a long sleep. The body lifts up, revealing a rather fetching young woman, with auburn hair. Her eyes flutter open, as though she was just asleep. "Wha... what..." "Yes, it's an Acamoth," you yell at her, grabbing another soul gem. You repeat the process, willing the soul to go back to it's flesh home. Are they all gonna be like this?"Hey, Yang, is that you?" The auburn haired girl glances back at you both, hands still glowing yellow. Her shield expands out a bit more, surrounding the entire circle. If you think the Acamoth could express fear, you're pretty sure he's getting ready to piss his pants. It begins to summon forth more black ooze, and throws it at the shield. The shield shudders a bit, but holds. "YOU THINK RESTORING THESE SOULS WILL STOP THE RITUAL?""Is that an-""Yes, it is!" The man jumps up off the ground, hands glowing green. "Can you do something about it?"He grins, fingers cracking as he flexes them. "Oh, yes." He throws several magical bolts at the demon, all of them striking the Acamoth in its limbs. >>36705764>YOU THINK RESTORING THESE SOULS WILL STOP THE RITUAL?Maybe not directly, but I am sure those other spirit mages can help us slay it and then pool their knowledge to unravel the spell.
>>36705919>>36705857>>36705855FOOLS! WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WHEN WE RUN OUT OF MANA?
>>36705963Punch it REALLY hard in the dangly bits
Rolled 5 (1d5)>>36705943Well, you probably had missed >>36705919 since it was close to yours. Can we stick with restoring soul though?
>>36705982We need mana for that. Non-spirit attacks do nothing, remember?
Rolled 4 (1d5)>>36705943Don't listen to those people, we should restore those souls.I'm going to sleep, don't fail me, guys.
>>36706000I honestly have no idea how anyone this works. Also sorry for the name, I keep forgetting to clear it.
>>36706044>Any of this*
>>36706000They do something, but not as much. The kinetic blow is a rote though so it doesn't cost us mana to use. We need to get a point in occult so we can make Spirit blast like that too.
>>36706106>Implying that our next adventures are not going to revolve around Forces arcana.
>>36706138We need both really, first thing a mage tends to do is master their ruling arcana, then branch out into the others.
>>36706106I thought that we don't actually NEED the point in occult, its just that without that point, it deals less damage than the spontanous version. (which is fine since having it as a rote still lets us cast it spontanously, we can just have the spontanous version be a "+1 dice for +1 mana" version for a while)That being said. I think our next buy should be spirit 5. followed by buying some rotes.
>>36706232I have a feeling that we're going to see some genies and sentient forces soon, so at least forces 3 would be nice. Also, good for flying and other traditional mage shenanigans.
"YOU CANNOT STOP WHAT IS COMING," it howls, trying to pull the bolts out of its body, but every time it tries to do so, it recoils in pain, hand sizzling. "EVEN IF YOU DELAY THIS, YOU CANNOT STOP THE SWELLING DARKNESS! sOMEDAY, YOU WILL DIE.""But that day is not today," you say to it, channeling your magic into your one working hand. It's rather hard, shaping the bolt of energy as your magical reserves are quickly dwindling. But you still form it all the same, and aim it square at the Acamoth's head. The other two Mages look at you in a mix of awe and horror, as your hand glows white with magic. The bolt flies straight and true, blasting it square in the face. It howls in pain, black ooze bubbling up out of it, one eye socket completely gone. "Well?" You glance at the others, an expectant look on your face. "This thing steals your souls and uses you in some ritual, and you don't want to deliver a little bit of vengence?""I mean, I do..." The Auburn haired one stands up, hands still glowing yellow. "It's just... No one's ever weaponized Spirit magic like that.""We usually just banish these things back to the Abyss," Yang says, shivering as he walks over to you.> Not today (Spirit Blast, 1 Mana used, 3 left)> Yield> Taunt> Other
>>36706283its definitely nice to have, then again ALL magic is nice to have. That being said, I would rather be a spirit 5/forces 2 mage than a spirit 4/forces 3. since specialization is key to victory. Especially considering we have a proper party, and gemini already has high forces score.
>>36706352>Spirit Blast, get them to support us.Gotta do this now guys.
>>36706352Let's not waste any more mana, please?Let's not also waste our breath taunting our soon-to-be-nothing opponent.Let's just restore the souls to other spirit mages and stop the ritual. Time is running out. Fast.

>>36706456>>36706494I think this is worth discussing, as in, IN CHARACTER discussing. it isn't going anywhere, so ask them.... while restoring the other spirit mages. seriously. 3 of you can each restore two spirit mages and get it done lickity split
>>36706469Yielding means letting the other mages banish it back to the Abyss.
>>36706530Does that mean Sarah's soul would be banished with it or did I miss something?
>>36706530Can we mention that it tried killing its only known anchor to this world, so banishing might not be a serious solution?
>>36706554Sarah's soul is inside Sarah's body, we only expelled the acamoth out of her. She's going to be fine. BUT checking her with the spirit sight should be our priority number three after saving the world and restoring souls to spirit mages, the fucker's familiar might still be "alive".
>>36706554No, the exorcism spell severed the connection between Sarah's soul and it. Right now the only thing keeping it here is it's will. When it saw the other Spirit Mages being restored, it tried to run (by distracting you with the black ooze). It failed, and Yang has now bound it to the Material World.
>>36706437>>36706441I don't think you guys understand, it doesn't sound like destroying it is taboo, its just weaponizing spirit magic has never done before. We're a prodigy

You fire another blast, this one at the Acamoth's chest. It impacts him hard, and you think if it could fall over in pain, it would. Instead, it just howls in pain as more of its flesh burns off. All of the pain and people it's harmed, and you want to inflict all of them back to it."Hey, stop it," she says, grabbing your outstretched hand. "I think you've proved your point.""This piece of shit has possessed the sister of a good friend of mine for 20 years. It stuck you guys in soul gems and used you to try and open a portal to the Abyss!" You want to blast it again, and again, and again. QM, after this is over, if there's somewhere in fluff or rulebooks that explains why killing it outright is bad, could you please explain? I mean don't tell me now, don't want to influence meta, but I'm curious why there's this sudden moral dilemma now
You really want to fire another blast, to put it out of its misery. You really, REALLY want to. But this isn't right. Not when you have two other people, who are wiser than you, telling you to stop. You lower your hand, as you struggle to stay awake. You look down, noticing your blood seeping out of your clothing. "Right, I got stabbed..." You fall to your knees, as the endorphins and adrenaline coursing through you begin to burn out. The auburn woman runs up, her yellow hands pressing against your stomach."Hang on, I got this." You feel her magic enter into you, and instantly feel the wounds beginning to close. It'll take some time, but your wounds aren't nearly as severe as Sarah's. "Hey, uhh... Yang?"You look back and see him restoring another person's soul to their body. He helps them up, looking back at you. "Yeah?""Can you guys look and figure out how to stop the ritual this son of a bitch was trying to do," you say, nodding your head over to the Acamoth. Thankfully, it's unconscious, but still breathing... Barely.Yang gets the others restored, and up on their feet. Garen's the last one restored, and almost instantly he turns from his old, wrinkled form into his youthful, muscled one. "Where is she!? Where is the unsightly wench who tried to-" He looks around, seeing you on the ground. "Oh... Oh. I guess you had something to do with this?"> We're not done yet, so, how do we stop the ritual?> Brag slightly> Flirt with the others> Other

"So, guys and gals... Not that I don't appreciate the view, but there's an impending apocalypse and we have..." You look down, thinking there is a watch there. "Oh... I dunno... Any moment now to stop it!?"The six Mages all gaze at the circle, trying to discern how it's powered, and how to turn it off, as the auburn haired one patches you up with her Life magic. Finally, one of them removes a stone, channeling blue magic into the circle. The stones rumble slightly, as the skies above you grow dark, the ritual lines fading away."There," he says, tossing the stone off into the distance. > [2/2]You slowly stretch your right hand, as the auburn girl begins healing your shoulder back into it's socket. It's a rather unpleasant feeling, but not nearly as painful as you thought it'd be. Then again, maybe it's her magic is softening the blow. You spend the time while she heals you catching them up to speed, explaining the situation to them all about Sarah (never naming her name), how she had been possessed for so long, and you were working with the Mystic, Gemini, the werewolves, and the Guardians to stop the Acamoth."Well, that certainly explains your pursuit of vengeance," Garen says, eying the demon. "But Yang and Hally were right; any more and you risk succumbing to the allure of all the power available to us. And once you start down that slippery slope, it's very hard to stop."You glance back, and see the bubble of time that Elizabeth had formed collapse, a slight dusting of snow falling all at once upon her. Basically, if you abuse your magical powers in such a way that you are blinded to the repercussions of your continued abuse of magic to fulfill your desires. If you perform an act of Hubris, I have to roll and see if you lose a point of Wisdom, which can also potentially grant you a derangement of some kind.

"Easy there, Mystic. I'm ok, we're all ok. We stopped the ritual, the world's saved." You pat the back of her head, trying to comfort her. "So, why are we not killing or banishing that thing back to the Abyss? It's been stuck inside a poor woman's soul for the better part of 20 years, who knows if it could come back, or worse. It's already tried to end the world, killed who knows how many people, corrupted the Shadow World, and threatened basically every spirit in a 50 mile radius from even attempting to stop it.""Because they have no sense of morals, no sense of right or wrong. "The name's Yang, by the way.""Raguel." You return the shake, and look around. "Anyone seen Gemini?"As if on queue, she lands to the ground, hair rather messed up, clothing singed, tossing an unconscious body to the ground. Back from dinner, writing.
"We saved her, the ritual is stopped." You point over to the demon, and she begins to walk over to it, hands crackling with lightning. "Whoa whoa whoa, no shocking the unholy abomination!""This piece of shit caused me and my sister more than enough suffering and pain!" She stops walking, lightning dissipating from her hands. "... You all just heard that, didn't you?""Yup," all 9 of you say at the same time. At that moment a loud howl pierces the landscape. All 9 of you look around as at least two dozen werewolves bound into view, panting heavily, steam pouring out of their mouths. One of them reverts into a more humanoid form."Where is it! Where is-" It follows your pointing finger to the unconscious, bound demon. "Oh... I see you had all the fun already," it says, reverting into its fully human form, revealing it to be Tali. Why is everyone running around naked today? It's fucking winter people, and it's snowing still. Put some damn clothes on already. Several others shift into human forms, and they are also nude. "Nice job," she says, walking up and patting you on the back."Thanks." You look back at the other 7 Thyrsus Mages, all inching back slowly. "Relax, they won't hurt us. At least, not today. You only need one success to use it and there's no penalty for failure other than wasted time, so we can eat the -3 from not having Occult. (Wits 2 - 3 for 0 Occult + Spirit 5 = 4 Dice)Checking back across the threads, I don't think we've been spending mana on Spirit Sight, so it would also make sense retroactively.Vote for Spirit 5 with 15 exp, Spirit Sight (aka Peer Across The Gauntlet, modified with the ability to grant sight to others) with 2 leftover rote dots and save the last 2 exp towards getting Occult.

Technically, you can cast Grant the Second Sight on yourself, so you'd only need one rote, albeit at a higher dot cost. For all we know, we're actually in the process of creating our own Legacy, what with Spirit Blast never having been attempted before.
>>36720336>what with Spirit Blast never having been attempted before.that one makes sense for our tower, since its ruling arcanas are spirit and force.
>>36720336>Those are the rotes. If you don't have the spell as a rote, you can still cast it but as an Improvised Spell, which by default costs 1 Mana.oh, you seem to be right>p131: Cost: Any Mana requirement for casting the spell, above the normal point needed to cast an improvised spell. See “Mana Cost,” p. 126but wait>p126: Improvised Magic: Casting an improvised spell requires the expenditure of a point of Mana, unless the primary Arcanum used is one of the mage’s Ruling Arcana. So, actually, spontaneously casting spells of spirit and forces school should have a 0 mana surcharge for us compared to the rote, meaning we should be able to cast the vast majority of them without rote.that being said, rote is still useful since it reduces resonance (aka, harder for other mages to detect our spell, identify who cast it, identify what it does) AND reduces paradox.
>>36720044Don't we have four left over rotes that we haven't spent from character creation? I remember Mage mentioning it
>>36720549No, wait, it's two. Bleugh, tired. Anyway, consider this a vote for spending our remaining rotes for Spirit Sight
>>36720397>Ruling ArcanaThat changes a lot, especially for covert spells.
