01/29/09(Thu)17:57 No. 3556411 >>3556265 A Standard Template Construct (STC) is an instructional blueprint (often including its own instant construction factory) that was originally designed back in the Dark Age of Tech to provide colony worlds with basic designs for the various highly important and practical technologies that colonial humanity relied upon. After the end of the Dark Age of Tech, when most of the means to create good technology was lost, the remaining STCs became the Mechanicum's only source for nonheretical "new" technology--as it had already been designed and used, and is not sentient, the Techpriests assume it is utterly free of corruption, not to mention full of awesome lost tech, and doubtlessly very effective. Undiscovered STC blueprints are incredibly rare, as most were lost in the chaos following the Dark Age, and as such, are considered holy relics by the Priests of Mars. Most of the items used by the Imperium's armies (including the Leman Russ Main Battle Tank, whose STC blueprints originally detailed a type of farming tractor) can be traced to one of the dozens of STC discoveries that have happened over the past 10,000 years. Each STC has the potential to contain lost tech of incredible importance--such as how to make plasma rifles that work right, how to make gravity plating again, how hover-tech works, how to make superior powered armor, even simple things like improved Soylens Viridians processors, or how to build a better Ratling trap. Most STC sites reveal only one or two blueprints. The loss of hundreds of STCs is almost grounds for Exterminatus of the defiler's home planet. Mars will be pissed. And no, they can't just reverse-engineer it. They don't even know what the damn things looked like because the Sororitas blew the blueprints up. Besides, reverse-engineering lost tech without having any blueprints to work with skirts the edge of Heresy.
