Deniable Assets Quest 3It is the year 22XX and Humanity has reached the stars. However, even as mankind grasps the heavens our asses are still firmly planted in the mud. After a tumultuous 21st century on Earth government has ceded its role to private enterprise. Humanity is ruled by ultra-Corporations. Some own continents. Some own multiple worlds. But no matter who you are, everyone is a citizen-employee somewhere. The qualms that beset corporations of the past, copyright infringement, tech theft, still exist. If anything, they are amplified by the scale of the players.Without government to turn to for legal recourse and separated by millions and billions of miles, corporations have turned to less savory solutions to resolve disputes. You are one of those solutions. You are an elite mercenary, also known as a High Impact Public Representative, of the StrikeOut Company, a group of mercenaries who accept contracts and missions from the highest bidder. You are an orbital courier. Your package is pain.QM’s Twitter:https://twitter.com/DickishDeadDAQ Master Pastebin with archive links, pastebins, and other miscellania:http://pastebin.com/nNU28gEA
>>34627535You decide that decorum should be maintained while in the workplace. There will be time for extracurricular training in the nearish future after all. The walk proceeds quickly, and soon you all arrive at the dojo. You glance around and order the rookies to pair off. “Remember kids, doesn’t matter what gender your opponent is, we’re all superhuman mercs here.” The prospective mercs pair off rather quickly, Chisaki challenging Marek with some well placed barbs involving his peepee and something called penis inspection day. Shrugging off whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean, you notice that Miyuki and Fausto have paired off. Probably for the best, those two don’t seem like the sort to want to cause serious injury to one another. You don’t want to be on the receiving end of an injury suit after all.You turn your attention to Hikaru, and she pushes her glasses further up her nose. “Well Kostov-sempai, it appears that we are partners.”You shake your head and chuckle. “I’ll try to be gentle.”Hikaru flushes slightly at your words. You don’t get what’s with the japanese and their flushing. “Alright, people, form up, it’s time to train.”
A beat, and then you remember basic safety. “Right, everyone, take off and/or out any sort of e-glasses or retina HUDs. I doubt that there’s going to be any incidents, but one can never be too careful.”The recruits walk off to take out their various bits of eyeware. You are surprised to see upon Hikaru’s return that she is still wearing glasses. “Hikaru,” you begin but the recruit cuts you off.“My apologies for that apparent irregularity sensei. However, my parents were… more inclined to a naturalist outlook and they deemed my eyesight not worthy of correction.”You shake your head, trying not to look too surprised. Pushback against extensive gene therapy has always existed, Hikaru’s eyes are just a more benign manifestation of it. Honestly, it does make sense in a way. She doesn’t seem the type to wear eyeglasses for vanity purposes. “Very well recruit. I suppose if it was an issue you would’ve washed out by now.”Hikaru smiles slightly. “Thank you, sensei. Although I doubt you too require corrective eyewear.”You reach up and realize that you’re still wearing your own pair of e-glasses. Suppressing a flush of embarrassment, you quickly walk back to one of the benches to stow it away. Just as you are about to remove your glasses, a notification icon flashes up. One you haven’t seen before.>Check the icon, see what’s going on. This might be important>Ignore and proceed with training. Checking your e-glasses is a lower priority than your obligation to the recruits

stop responding you retards
You gesture vaguely back to Hikaru and the other recruits for patience. Though odds are this is just some new toolbar demanding the right to ruin your minimalist HUD, you might as well check it out. You blithely open the icon and read the message within.>Attention StrikeOut Alternative Interpersonal Relations Specialist SERIAL NUMBER ΣΨ0018129Already that’s got your attention. That isn’t the usual public serial number StrikeOut has on hand for employee identification, that’s internal designation.>This is a request from NeoLogos Security and Safety Subsidiary: Mymerkion Branch>An incident has occurred in the Tyras District, Ismene Tower. A code 449 is taking place on the ninety eighth floor. Situation has escalated past the ability of local forces to manage. Requesting tactical support from all local StrikeOut personnel. Further information available onsite.Beneath the brief message glows twin options, “accept” and “reject”. You scour your mind, irritatedly trying to remember what a code 449 means. Back when you were with NepCol it meant that someone was illicitly downloading copyrighted entertainment materials. You are hard pressed to imagine how some kid torrenting whichever iteration of Backdoor Sluts Go Nuts they’re on would garner police attention, let alone spiral so far out of control.
You quickly ping back:>Request clarification, Code 449A second’s pause.>Code 449: Hostage Situation. Armed Perpetrators.Well shit. Apparently Jimmy really wanted to get his rocks off. You spin around, barking at the assembled rookies, “this training is being put on hold due to… unexpected developments. We will continue as soon as possible.”The groans of frustration are punctuated by a loud “bullshit,” from Marek. You ignore the recruit and continue walking forward. Hikaru falls in beside you. “Sensei, if it’s not too forward to ask, what exactly is happening?”You consider her question briefly before deciding that there’s no harm in answering it. “Hostage crisis in Myrmekion.”This revelation is met with shocked gasps from all the assembled rookies, with one predictable exception.“Ride along,” asks Marek, hope evident.>Ride Along?>Yes, this could be a good experience for them even if they don’t take part in the pacification effort>No, they’re just rookies and you’re not about to deal with the repercussions with HR if one of these bastards gets injured on your watch.

You scratch your chin for a second, weighing the cost of a potential HR inquiry against the benefits of… well something. Who knows, maybe you actually did intend to help train these rookies. “Alright. Ride along. All of you, get to the armory and get geared up. Doubletime.”You march off to the Armory, the rookies swarming behind you, excitement evident in their voices. “... got doubletime. It means do it faster but isn’t it really saying take twice as much time,” seems like Fausto tries to cover up his nerves with irreverent observations.“We won’t be directly involved in any fighting right,” Miyuki’s concern is evident in her voice. You open the Camp Shirewoodsburgsfordbrad Armory, the doors sliding apart with an ominous hiss. “Alright, you all know what your weapons speciality is. Grab whatever they have available, get some body armor on and form up at the entrance.”The rookies disperse, leaving you time to curse the fact that all you brought along in the flight down was your trusty tomahawk. To be fair, you couldn’t have predicted that some candyasses would try to take hostages while you were planetside, but shitty luck is shitty luck. You scan the racks of body armor. Wyrmskin Tactical Vests. Primitive, far more so than the stock armor you yourself owned when starting out at StrikeOut. They keep it around mostly for training purposes, where the weight and stiff articulation are desirable handicaps. You slide it on and grab one of the helmets. It’s odd, to wear an open faced helmet. Still the tactical HUD and comm suit seem to be working fine. You walk over to the weapons rack. You forgot that generic weapons were a thing. Corporate logos filed off of the old but well cared for guns lying before you. You sincerely hope that NeoLogos Security have boomier things like grenades, because all you can see out here are duds.

>>34629479Kinda sorta bulletproof. Your soft tissues are quite bullet vulnerable. Your Skeleton is proof against small arms fire, but that could be a problem if the bullet bounces off and ricochets around your ribcage. You'd be badly concussed by headshots but would most likely not die

>>34630028We paid off our debt right? I'm curious, could be buy other peoples debt? I could see us making quite the bit of money off of that. Even by decreasing the interest owed we would still probably make plenty of money and get in peoples good books so to speak.

>>34629609This is CQC, hostage situation in an urban environment. We take:SHotgun as primary weapon, because its -actually good- in these conditiions.Backup weapon: SMG or AR, whichever we're better with.Grab a sniper rifle, because they're useful for hostage situations, but keep it in the case - we can pass it off to someone else on the ground, like clayton or someone who's dropping with us.Grab some dud HAND GRENADES for our eventual breach+enter diversion.Taser side-arm, if they have it. This i a HOSTAGE situation. And tomahawk, of course.
>>34630092Wait until we start leveling out on essential purchases. We still need to invest enough in ourself between missions to keep surviving, ya know?
>>34630127Dang it! Its not Loansharking if we give better rates then the company.... I mean it~! :p
>>34630239As an instructor we can probably pick out those likely to go far in the company and invest in their future. Paying their debt basically and offering better rates is our way of saying we expect great things from them. Its a compliment! It means they don't have to worry so much about finances and can consider their survival more. Less attention on money in the beginning and more attention on better armor and weapons.
>>34630489It also helps that we do technically make money off of doing that. They aren't going to immediately pay off their debt so there will be some small amount of money made from the interest rate. Hopefully though one of them won't simply ignore their debt and let it get out of control. We do need the money for ourself after all.
>>34630239>>34630489>>34630735I hope you guys aren't serious about this. Part of the loan system is to encourage proper spending habits.
what if they die and never pay us back ?
>>34630922Then we clearly made a bad investment and really suck at picking out those with potential.
You decide to pack a shotgun for that sweet sweet close range engagement and an assault rifle for mid range. And some dud grenades because why the hell not? Aside from the obvious fact that they just don’t work. In all seriousness they could come in handy for any ploys you might have in mind. You turn around and see that the rookies are all by and large prepared for action. Although Th- Miyuki seems to be straining her Wyrmskin a touch. The six of you roll out of Camp Shirebradsburgford… wood and into a waiting SWAT van. A rather worn looking officer is sitting in the back of the vehicle, waiting to debrief you. He seems surprised at the number of mercs clambering into the back of the van. You address him. “Ivan Kostov. I got the call to duty. What’s the situation?”The officer shakes his head, rousing himself. “Right. Well, it frank-fucking-diddly could be a hell of a lot worse… and I wish to shit it was.”That statement draws several curious grunts from the rookies. The officer shrugs. “This is an awkward situation. Just messy enough we need to call in you people, but not quite out of control enough for the LoGAds to request a strike intervention.”“Why not,” inquire Fausto, seeming genuinely curious.“A lot of people don’t like the idea that there’s a merc company with legal authority floating around in space with zero accountability to them,” you reply as memories of PR training bubble up. “So we’ve gotta make sure that if we do a domestic drop into Atlas it’s for a damned good reason otherwise people will get so sidetracked over our extra-legal status they’ll ignore the fact we just saved their asses.”
The Officer nods in agreement. “Yeah. And while these loons are packing, it sure as shit isn’t some goddamned martian invasion so we gotta keep your involvement in this quiet.”“Speaking of,” you say turning your attention to the officer, “What’s the situation over there?”“Shitfire,” grumbles the officer. “Right. So Ismene Tower is one of NeoLogos’ premier research facilities into neuroshit. The guys who have busted in there are noncoms-”“Noncoms,” asks Chisaki, confusion evident. The officer snorts with obvious irritation while you quickly explain, “Noncoms are Non-Contributors, or basically people who have voluntarily withdrawn from all corpro-citizenship subscriptions. Usually called that because they by and large exist outside of society and don’t contribute.”The Officer grunts. “They’re a bunch of crunchy ass fruitbats. But they’ve got guns and at least one of them knows how to use them-” he forwards an image of one of the hostage takers. “We have tentatively IDed this perp as Antonin Dubsky, a former security officer for the Ismene Tower. He’s probably the leader of the group, or at the very least the reason why they were able to get in there in the fuckity first place. And most likely the reason why they were able to get their hands on NeoLogos brand OMPs in the first place.”“Wait all they have are OMPs,” you ask, slightly outraged that the police needed your help at all for a bunch of lightly armored nitwits like these.“Yeah. And those OMPs are packing proper rifle rounds. Got a few officers before we realized what was going on.”“Shit,” you mutter. “How many hostiles?”“Eighteen total,” replies the Officer. “And they have twenty two civilians held hostage.”
“No negotiating?”“They want NeoLogos to cease all research and development into Neuroware to cease immediately. So no.”“Fuck. So what’s the plan?”“Well,” replies the officer, smiling hawkishly, “I’ve got a suggestion that I might make to you. If you act on it, that’s entirely your problem.”Seems likely whatever he has in mind isn’t approved in the NeoLogos Security charter. “Okay…”“Well, one theoretically could commandeer a local news VTOL, use it to get in close to the roof of the Ismene Tower. Once these enterprising folks passed out of our line of sight they would become Schrodinger’s Commandos. Both on the roof and still in the ‘TOL.”“And from there they could take out the opposition while the police distracted the hostage takers?”“In theory yes. Of course, we would never contemplate doing such a thing. After all, NeoLogos Sec can only commence a raid of a building from marked vehicles and even then only after announcing their intentions.”“Interesting…”>Do you>Back the Officer’s plan>Suggest one of your own

Their "Training Mission" was to secure the building and prevent their instructor from reaching the roof. To facilitate this, radio silence was engaged a couple of hours prior to the mission. When the trainees secured the roof, they realized the gravity of the situation, but upon "poorly considered priorities", refused to break radio silence and simply held down the roof until their instructor arrived.During this, the instructor sneaks in through a backdoor and starts taking down hostiles...okay this is stupid.

“Alright guys, I’ve just had the most brilliant idea. We commandeer a news’TOL and break into Ismene Tower from the roof. Hopefully the Sec Fors might even be trying to engage the hostage takers in another round of negotiation while we’re doing so. How does that sound?”A round of nervous assents.“Excellent. Officer…?”“Officer Nikas.”“Officer Nikas. Do you think the local Sec Fors will have frags and flashbangs? Unfortunately we just came here from Camp Shirebradwoodsburgford and they only had duds on hand.”“Ah, I was wondering where your extra assistance came from, since they weren’t on the roster. Fresh from Camp Woodsburgshirebradford? Yes, I know for certain we do.”The van comes to a stop. The rookies pile out and acquire various grenades from a nearby supply truck. You make sure to grab a fragmentation grenade and three flashbangs. You also make sure to put them on the opposite hip from your dud grenades. You’d very much not like to throw the wrong one during the heat of battle.
The six of you climb into the VTOL. Your thumbs up garners a nervous smile from the pilot. The craft takes off and begins to climb straight up. As it climbs you position yourself in front of the camera. "Some fuckfaces, I mean anti-corporation dissidents have assumed control of Ismene tower and taken multiple hostages. Believed to be led by Hans Gruber, a terrorist also known by the alias Rickman, their demands are the cessation of research and development of Neuroware, but are actually after a magnetically sealed vault in the building. Idiots die hard.”You return your attention to the camera. And are promptly interrupted by Hikaru. “Kostov-sensei, excuse me, but I think it would be prudent if I took position on a nearby roof instead of joining you for the insertion. My sniper rifle lacks the portability for use indoors.”“Yeah, good idea Hikaru. Pilot! Heavy weapons might be overkill in an office building.”Hikaru looks concerned. “Then by the same token, shouldn’t Miyuki spot for me?”You grunt. “Perhaps, but Miyuki has medical training I hope to the big bearded man in the sky we won’t need.”Hikaru nods, sated but not pleased with your response. You mentally promise to not let Miyuki get shot to shit. Well, not that you intend for any of your rookies to get shot to shit…. okay maybe Marek. The VTOL begins its ascent once more, and after a few minutes you are hovering over the rooftop of the Ismene Tower. You check your belay. “Alright kids. It’s time to get an on the ground exclusive report.”And with that you leap out of the VTOL, carefully sliding yourself down a rope until both feet touch down on solid roof. You pull out your assault rifle and screw in a silencer. Unlike its 20-21st century counterparts, this actually does silence gunfire. “Ready your belays again rookies,” you say, walking towards the elevator shaft. “We’re going to figure out what a TV dinner feels like.”Okay, so it’s an elevator shaft, not a vent but you’ll take what you can get. The doors comply with your demand to open. It seems like someone has given you override privileges. Either that or these bastards are too scrub to actually subvert local systems. Never credit to competence what could just as easily be incompetence. You attach your belay and begin to slide down into the dark shaft, listening carefully to the sound of the rookies sliding down behind and above you. Everything seems to be going well until three floors down you hear a very ominous noise. Something slipped. As it turns out, someone slipped. And as it turns out, it was Miyuki. And as it turns out, Miyuki’s chest can make a formidable weapon when it’s encased in a vest of overlapping ceramic scales. The two of you free fall nearly fifty feet before you finally manage to regain control of both of your descents. There may have been a bit of screaming during the descent. Some of it might have been you. Either way, you’re fairly well convinced that someone might have heard you guys.Something tells you that it would’ve been an even worse idea to take the maintenance stairs. The two of you climb back up to the ninety eighth floor, where Chisaki and Marek are waiting for both of you. Chisaki leans down and whispers, “We think we heard someone standing outside of the shaft door.>What is your plan?

“Take up positions around the side of the shaft,” you mutter. “I’ll splay out directly beneath the door.”The rookies comply silently as you move into position. Now you play the waiting game. A few tense seconds pass. Then a sliver of light appears in the shaft. Your heart has a hard time not leaping into your throat. You swallow as silently as possible as the opening grows wider. Both you a Marek reach out at the same time, seizing upon two different patrolmen and yanking them into the shaft. Unfortunately for you, your grip on his ankle wasn’t exactly the firmest, and the Noncon slips out of your grasp. You clench your jaw as the man issues a blood curdling shriek as he plummets down the elevator shaft. It terminates in a soggy crunching noise. You wince again as the first crunch is followed by a second. “Oops.”“Could’ve been worse,” you sigh more or less irritated that you let your butterfingers get the best of you once more. “C’mon, we should go mobile before someone comes to check out the death screams.”You lead the rookies out of the shaft and into a generic looking office building. Wherever you are, this must not be the research area. Probably administration. Research wouldn’t have quite so many motivational cat holos. You wave the rookies forward as you proceed down the hallway towards the area on your tactical map marked by the Sec Fors as the most likely location for the hostages to be stored. You walk down a few more corridors before indicating a halt. Although the rambling debate of the mentally unstable might prove interesting you guys really have to take care of business. The longer Dubsky has those hostages, the more chances he has to blow them all to shit. You can’t help but think that might reflect badly on your resume when the time comes for consideration for the next payrank. You gesture Marek and Chisaki to the other side of the corridor, while you and Miyuki press up against the wall, glancing around the corner. Although you can’t see the full room you are sure there are at least two hostiles in there. They’ve got the scrambler blinds down, a common feature in many corporate R&D buildings to prevent long range spying by competitors. It essentially means that Hikaru can only fire blind at the moment. Might as well not fire at all.The room seems to be your normal conference room. You can see the tail end of a long table in there, surrounded by chairs. You’re fairly certain that there aren’t any hostages in there. You doubt even the slightly delusional would openly argue in front of their captives.>Plan of Attack

>>34637144Scrambler Blinds are a somewhat colloquial naming. They are not in fact physical obstructions but a type of radiation absorbing screen that can be activated from within the window itself. >>34638009dice mechanics are the same as they've always been. Action is broken into a sequence of events, called the action chain. Each part of the action chain is rolled for with each dice roll in the sequence. So in this case throwing the flashbang was the first action rolled for, going down along the hallway was the second, shooting at one target was the third and so on and so forth.>>34637881HR reps usually don't take on any more than one merc at a time. FG you still there?
>>34638017I am 100% glazed.
You pull out one of your three flashbangs. Actually, they’re just flashes. The bang bit might be a teensy bit of a giveaway. These are designed for situations such as this one in mind, where a dispersed enemy remains in auditory if not visual contact. You pull the pin and roll the grenade out across the floor, into the conference room. The dull bouncing of its passage along the carpet sounds like distant thunder. The rumbling stops short. And then it gets louder.“SHIT! COVER EYES HIT DECK!”Your order comes out just in time as the rookies fall to the ground, trying to face away from the detonation of the flashbang. It works. Sort of. Your vision explodes in white, although not in the searing head pain of a full blast of flash. Small blessings.Rolling onto your back you fire blindly up and towards the corridor, shooting through the walls. Your efforts are rewarded with an agonized gurgle as your clip runs dry. Cursing, you scramble against the floor, the carpeting as hard and unyielding as cement in your adrenaline fuelled flight as you pull Miyuki back and away from an explosion of OMP fire.
>>34638456Double glazed now.
Too disoriented to properly reload your assault rifle, you seize upon your shotgun, slamming it against your shoulder as you try to blink away the dazzling bursts of white light. You shudder with something terribly akin to fear as bullets whizz over head. This is not going nearly as well as you’d like it to. Honestly, you don’t see this going very well.Chisaki’s scream as she charges forward breaks you out of your brief reverie. “Nippleshit! You fucking idioooooooooooo-!”Your voice comes out in a strangled scream as you barrel into the hallway after her, and stops short as you use your free hand to slam her out of the way of a burst of OMP fire. The bullets connect with your Wyrmskin armor, leaving some truly nasty bruises, probably even some soft tissue damage. Spinning from the impact your right hand whips around, and depresses the trigger of your shotgun. The gun bucks against your hand, sending a spray of shot down the hallway. You stumble sideways and into Chisaki before sliding down the wall, groaning in pain. You look across the hall, somewhat dazed as you see the second Noncon fall backwards, a meaty crimson crater where his sternum once was.You look around vision a little blurry. Your voice croaks as you speak.“Headcount.”
