"I just can't do this anymore."The words seem to cut into you. Seven years of marriage. Seven years, and this is how it ends? "This is just a rough spot!" You stubornly insist. "Every couple has them, if we just put in the eff-" You're cut off by her hand slamming into the top of Jake's shitty little compact. Your friend pointedly avoids eye contact."This is not. Just. A rough spot. I'm done, I can't take a single syllable more of your bullshit! Over and OVER again I've tried to trust you but every time you just turn around and... and piss it all away! It was a golden opportunity, an offer like no other. Corporate Repo was a competitive field, especially in this day and age, but the pay. God damn, the pay! "I was tired of wandering around aimlessly in life, I thought you'd be happy!" She scowls. "My idea of happiness does not include my fucking husband gone for months at a time in the asshole of nowhere! You could've at least consulted with me about it first, before you go signing contracts and whatever the hell!" You hold out your hands pleadingly. "Baby, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity! If I didn't take it, someone else would've!"She shakes her head. "Don't call me." With those final words, she climbs into the car. Jake throws you a sympathetic grimace before pressing down the gas pedal and twirling out of his parking space. You watch his tail lights recede into the distance with an overwhelming sense of regret. Surely this isn't actually the end. The love of your life, your college sweetheart, gone in an instant? It can't just... end like this, can it?You stand there for a long while, staring off into space. Eventually you notice the cold seeping in through your jacket and cast a glance over your shoulder towards your house on a hill. You can't help but feel it would be oppressively lonely without Claire. You never managed to have any kids, despite innumerable tries. You pull your jacket tighter around yourself and turn to walk up the sloped path to your hilltop home. The door's open, clothes strewn across the entryhall from Claire's hasty exit. The china vase your mother gave you lies shattered across the floor, the result of an errant swing of her baggage. You don't bother closing the door, instead slipping upstairs to change into gym shorts and a warm hoodie. A little exercise will be just what you need to ward off the onset of depression. Before you leave you pull open the back door and let out a long, loud whistle. Sally, the only other major woman in your life, comes bolting out of her doghouse like a bullet from a gun. An eight year old retired greyhound you adopted three years ago. She might be retired, but it's still damn impressive how fast she can run. You don't bother with a leash, just clapping your hand against your thigh gets her to fall in line. You exit through the backyard gate, having no desire to retrace the path of destruction left by your soon-to-be-ex wife on her way out the door. You do some simple stretches to warm up while you consider what route you want to take. The forest trail has always been peaceful as can be, but at this time of night... it's probably a little shady. You could always just run a few laps around the block, but where's the fun in that? There's also the corner store down on Main Avenue, place has surprisingly good barbecue.>Take a jog through the forest path, you've got Sally with you. You set off at a jog down the hill, along a well-worn path into the woods that surround your little slice of suburbia. The almost everpresent hum of the orbital cargo transport's engines fades away as the thick canopy envelopes you. In its place you find yourself surrounded by the buzzing of insects, rustling of critters, and quiet chirping of birds. You slip into a comfortable pace and do your best to clear your head.Your mind wanders to the job offer. Corprate Repo is a fairly small field but highly in demand. Supposedly the only way to get in is to have military experience or know somebody. You'd been applying everywhere ever since you got out the Navy, but with a less than illustrious career under your belt you didn't actually expect to get in anywhere. When 'Molly', no last name, offered you a position working for Stelle Incorporated you couldn't pass it up. You'd put off telling Claire until just today, almost a week later. You really did think she'd be happy to hear you were finally moving up in the world. To be honest, you feel kind of betrayed that she reacted so poorly to your success. You're about a third of the way through the trail when your thoughts are interrupted. You see a bright flash of light deeper into the woods accompanied by a loud 'pop', almost like a balloon going off. Sally dashes off in the direction of the flash, the forest suddenly unnaturally silent. "Wait, Sally!" You call out, but she's well and truly focused now. You doubt she even heard you. Damn it, she hardly ever does this!>Follow after her. You can't just leave her out in the woods!>She'll find her way home, eventually. She always does.>Whistle for her, stick around. You pick your way through the underbrush and around the thick trunks of trees towards where you saw the flash. It's slow going, these woods get pretty wild once you're off the trail. You hear a man curse under his breath and a soft thud, followed by Sally yelping. It sounded like it came from somewhere off to your left. Anger floods you at the thought of someone hurting your dog. You dash off in the direction of the noise with wild abandon. You come crashing into a small clearing in the woods, finding a rather grisly sight before you. A man in a bloody white shirt points a gun at your chest. He's pale beyond belief, with heavy bags under his eyes. His face is gaunt to the point of being skeletal and the short mop of hair on his head is in complete disarray. He looks to be bleeding from a wound in his shoulder, but he doesn't seem overly concerned. It dawns on you slowly that you've met this man once before, when you were first given a tour of your new office. You think his name was... Robert, or something. On the ground next to him is a corpse, trussed up and bleeding profusely from a hole in the back of its head. Six of its fingertips are cut off and a pair of bloody shears lies on the ground next to it. You think it was a woman, in life, but you can't be certain. A toolbox containing various vials and tools sits next to the body. A wave of nausea washes over you, and for a moment you think you might puke, but you're too stunned to move.>Holy shit, Bob. "Holy shit, Bob." The words are out of your mouth before you even know you're speaking. "The fuck is going on? What did you do to my dog?" Robert glares at you, or at least glares harder at you. He's not a man with a terribly broad range of facial expression. "Dog's fine.-" He waves his pistol in the general direction of a small crumpled up ball of fur. Sally whines quietly, shivering. "Bitch was trying to bite me so I kicked her. Why do you know my name?"He levels the gun once more at your chest. You lick your lips nervously. When did your mouth get so dry? "Can we... can we put the gun down, man?" Robert grins cruely. "No. Now start talking. Am I supposed to know you from somewhere, faggot? Better be someplace good, I don't like witnesses..."Shit, there's no way this guy would kill you right? You're his coworker! He'd get fired, wouldn't he? "It's Don, you know... uh, Donovan?" His finger slides from the trigger guard, wrapping around the thin strip of metal that seperates you from a bullet in the chest. "Donovan Murphy! You know, the new guy from work? We met yesterday, when I was getting a tour of the office!" Robert cocks his head to the side, for a moment you think recognition dawns on his face. "Hmmm, nope. Not ringing any bells."You open your mouth to respond, but something hits you in the chest and knocks all the wind out of you. You feel yourself wrenched backwards, but manage to keep your feet. The flash and the sound of the gunshot only seem to filter through later, footnotes tacked on to the situation as an afterthought. Dumbstruck, you reach a hand up and press it against the gaping hole in your chest. When you pull it away it's covered in deep, red blood. You feel something tearing through your got and hear a second pop, then a third as something slams into the other side of your chest. You take a deep, wheezing breath but no matter how much your try to inhale you can never seem to get enough air into your lungs. You've ended up on the ground, though you're not sure how or when it happened. This isn't fair. This isn't fair at all. Your wife left you, and now your coworker has shot you not once, but three times. Where is the justice in that? You were supposed to start your new job tomorrow. Supposed to get rich. Supposed to win back Claire's heart regardless of what it took. You were supposed to give your mother grandchildren before she died, and teach your son to shoot a rifle.Black is creeping into the edges of your vision, but you manage a glimpse of Robert standing above you. Next to him is another figure, a decayed torso attached at the waist to the mass of flesh, its eyes merely hollow sockets. Barbed tentacles snap towards you from the mass of flesh, but a barrier of some sort seems to stop them."My, my. Master, is this the one?" The disembodied torso speaks. Panic sets in. You try to reach for your chest to see if you're still filled full of holes, but you can't move your arms. You can feel them there, you can feel your muscles straining to bend your elbows, but they simply won't move. You try to look down, but your neck won't budge. Your head stands locked straight, eyes focused on the figure before you. It's almost like sleep paralysis. You'd be hyperventilating were you able to breathe, and your heart would be racing if only it was still beating at all. "Am I dead?" You speak almost without realizing it, a flood of relief washing over you when you hear your own voice echoing through the vast expanse. "Is this hell? What did I do? You try to clear your throat but find that you're unable. "Well, I suppose it would depend on the cost..." Holy crap, you're actually being offered a second chance. You cannot wait to wrap your fingers around that skeletal little bastard's throat and squeeze the life out of- "My demands are thus, mortal." Your thoughts are interrupted by the creature's voice. "One, you shall serve and obey me regardless of my commands. Would I ask you kill yourself, you would be obligated to do so."That's... that's quite the demand to make on someone. You'd protest but the creature continues to speak. "Two, you will not reveal knowledge of my existence or the existence of this afterlife to any mortals you would come in contact with. To do so will cause you unimaginable pain." You suppose that one sort of makes sense. "Three, you will offer to me a single human life in sacrifice, per month. Who this life comes from matters not, be they the vilest of corrupters or the most honorable of knights. After the proper incantations have been made, you must consume the flesh of the sacrifice in totality. To fail in this duty will result in your immediate, and painful, death."Okay, canabalistic human sacrifice. A little bit outside of your comfort zone. You're not sure if you're okay with that. Again, the creature continues. "Four, you will not squander your second chance by segregating yourself from the world. I am giving you a great gift, I expect you to take full advantage of it. When next we meet I do not want you to retain any regrets."(1/2)
The creature's mouth splits into a grin far too wide for any human mouth. "In exchange for these services I offer you a single boon. I may grant you the ability to see and interact with spirits, opening up the possability of forming contracts and binding them to your will. I may grant you the perfect body, the absolute peak of human ability in every way. Finally, I may grant you the gift of regeneration; even should you be reduced to a fine pink mist, your body will eventually rebuild itself. "Should you refuse you will be torn apart and subsumed by the collective, never to again be sentient, let alone see the light of day." Hot damn, that seems just a tad harsh. Still, maybe there could be some leeway here?"If I should refuse your boon but accept your offer, it would only be fair that you lighten your demands." The creature once more leans forward, closer this time. You can feel the thin tendrils of flesh sliding along the underside of your chin like cillia. Its nose is nearly pressed against your own. "This is not a bargain, mortal. You accept or you decline. The terms are set in stone and have been for hundreds of millenia, long before even your earliest ancestors were even concieved."You frown. This guy is really being no fun at all. "Just because the terms have been decided millenia ago doesn't mean they can't change. Work with me here, I'm selling myself into slavery to serve you the least you can do is offer your newest servant a little give and take, yeah?"The creature leans back, a skeletal hand reaching up to pick at the strands of flesh that compose its head. It's thinking, you think.>ROOOLL 3d10, flat. DC is 20

"Your arguement has merrit, but you have no power here. As your accomplishments grow so too will your power and perhaps, as you advance, I will provide you a longer leash." The creature waves a hand absentmindedly, as if dismissing the entire line of conversation. Once more the creature leans forward, its bony hands cupping your face. "Now choose, this is the last time I ask, mortal."You feel coldness creeping into your flesh through the creature's fingers, your skin rapidly rotting away the longer the contact is maintained. You get the feeling the spirit is rushing you You quickly discount regeneration as a possability, while certainly a powerful boon it doesn't necessarily mean you can't be contained or imprisoned. Being the absolute peak of what a human can attain in terms of physical and mental attributes is certainly tempting, but it's rather limited in terms of advancement. You wouldn't be able to go anywhere from there. In the end, you decide to go with the ability to see and bond with spirits. As your neck sloughs off you speak. "I wish for the ability to see, commune, and contract spirits. I will agree to your terms, creature." The creature removes its hand, and your flesh returns in an instant. "Very well, I will return you to your body. Your life will be yours to do with as you please so long as the sacrifice is recieved and you obey my orders when I give them."The creature touches a finger to your forehead and a sharp burning sensation radiates through your being. "Go, my servant. Prosper."You slowly become conscious of your surroundings. Something warm, wet, and rough is running itself across the side of your face. It smells like absolute crap. You're laying on a bed of wet leaves. Your mouth is filled with a foul, coppery taste you recognize as blood. You groan wearily and push Sally away with one hand, rolling onto one side to vomit the meager contents of your stomach into the grass and detritus.(1/2)
Your stomach emptied, you finally crack open your eyes. You're alive, you're breathing. Everything hurts, but you're alive! Sally whines miserably, trying to lick away the dried blood that cakes your face. Odd, that you weren't burried. Nor was the girl's corpse. Did Robert panic after you stumbled upon the scene? Did he flee? You push yourself up, pausing a moment to scratch behind your faithful mutt's ears. She is clearly favoring her right side, you'll probably need to take her to a vet, but at least she's alive. The world doesn't seem particularly... different. >>34453543Yeah sorry, I just went back and rered that part, thought it was just cannibalism.
"C'mon girl, let's go home." You pat Sally on the head briefly before pushing yourself to your feet. Pain twist through your gut and you instinctively press a hand to your abdomen, but you feel no hole. It's likely simply a result of vomitting recently. You do your best to walk it off, but it's slow going. You're barely able to stand without support by the time you reach the trail.Curious, you note a trail of blood leading further down the path. It would be faster to retrace your steps towards home, as you're less than halfway around the trail, but you can guarantee there was no blood there before. It seems to have a hazy quality to it you can't quite pin down, like it's surrounded by a corona of light, but if you focus on it directly the effect is gone.Sally whines, sniffing at the blood. She whines again and hobbles a few steps down the path towards home before pausing to whine again. She seems struct by indecision, an odd circumstance to be in for a dog, no doubt.>Follow the blood, you're curious to see what left the trail.>Focus on getting home, strange trails of glowing blood in the woods can wait.>Write-in

>>34453671>Calling this a setting.Anon, pls. It's a loosely joined string of ideas at best.Anyway, writin' for>Follow the blood trail
You limp down the trial, following the blood. It twist and winds along the path, the corona of light surrounding it gradually growing brighter. Presumably the fresher the blood, the brighter the glow. At least that's your educated guess, for all you know it's complete bullshit. You begin to hear weeping filtering through the thick woods and underbrush, coming from somewhere up ahead. It's obviously feminine, and there is a certain haunting, echoing quality to the sound that seems to make it resound throughout the forest, even though you can only barely heart it. You manage to force yourself into a jog without excessive pain, Sally hobbling along behind you painfully. You can't have gone very far, but it feels as though you've trekked miles. The trail of blood suddenly stops, as does the weeping. You're standing in a area of the trail that's a bit wider than the others, room on either side for a jogger to rest or picnickers to relax. It seems inordinately hot, especially considering how chilly it was just a moment ago. You find yourself sweating profusely without really knowing why. A young girl's voice intrudes on your thoughts from above, and you glance up to see a robed, more or less formless figure hovering in the air. Instead of legs, her lower body seems to form into some sort of flaming tail. Her upper body beneath the robes seems to be a veritable aurora, a dozen colors shifting and swirling together.(1/2)
Where her face ought to be, she instead has an odd mask in the shape of a bull's skull, long horns curving upwards from her temples. Two roiling balls of fire rest where her pupils ought to be in the voids that are her eyes. "For what reason do you follow me? I wish only to be left alone, to ruminate on the cruel hand delt to me by fate! Must you interrupt a lady's private musings?"Flame flickers to life on one of the creature's shoulders, burning for an instant before extinguishing itself. A mix of panic and fear begins to creep through you as you realize you're either going insane or that conversation with Death, or whatever it was, wasn't a dream.>I was just curious, is all. You smile as charmingly as you can manage through the fog of pain that seems to consume your life. "Hello, my name is Donovan. What's yours?" The spirit folds its arms in front of its chest. "Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova of Russia and Rightful Empress of All the Russias!" She declares proudly, fist propped against her hips. However, she can't maintian the facade of confidence for very long. "At least... I think I am. I don't... really remember very much, if I'm being honest. I know those dirty Bolsheviks killed me and my family in secret after we'd given them all they'd asked! It was completely unjustified!"Flames seem to roar to life around her as her temper flares. "I'll have every dirty communist rebel's head roasted while they still life, I swear it by my unlife! The men who reduced me to a incorporeal spirit will rue the day they dared to interfere with the life of Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova of Russia and Rightful Empress of All the Russias!" Christ, that's a long title. You really hope she's not going to do that every damn time she mentions herself. >>34454184>>Ask Princess Anastasia here what she's doing in the United States, and why she's speaking English
You squint skeptically at the hovering embodiment of flame above you. "Tell me, Princess Anastasia. What are you doing in the United States, and why are you speaking English?" She sticks her nose haughtily into the air. "Everyone knows that your Federal States of America are fervent enemies of communisim! Your hyper-captialstic system offers exactly the kinds of opportunities a wandering spirit like myself needs to advance her cause in the afterlife." She looks down her nose at you. "As for my apparent mastery of the English language, I am a Grand Duchess. I had a loyal tutor who taught me to read, speak, and write English just as any native would!"You're still not really convinced. "Do you actually speak Russian, then?" She seems to grow offended. "Of course I do! Das vidanya! See? That's Russian!" You're pretty sure that's a mispronunciation and plus it was in that old action movie, but you don't really know enough about Russian to say for certain. Before you can further grill her on her knowledge of her supposed mother tongue, she poses a question to you. "What are you doing here so late at night, moral? Why can you even see me? Why are you covered in blood?"She's twisted in the air so she's leaning towards you, her chin in her hands and her elbows propped against nothing. That firey tale of hers seems to twirl and twist upwards, vanishing into the night sky.>Explain the story of your most recent death and resurrection.>Mention going for a walk to distract yourself from the fact your wife just left you, leave out the murder thing.>Write-in
