Your drones work tirelessly to complete their work, but you have much to do. Your hive continues to expand and soon this planet will no longer bind you to its surface, but first thing’s first, you will need to finish your farm and mine. You are the Hive Queen, and this small, unnamed planet is your home. You have helped the humans stay alive until their rescue arrives, if only to get them away from you sooner. The human named Ryan Lee has taken a liking to you, likely as a result of you saving his life, while the others seem to grow suspicious of your origin. They have spent the day gathering their tattered and damaged things, and tending to their wounded in the wake of the Herd Beetle attack. The sun is just now rising on a new day. A crack of thunder is heard in the distance, followed by several more and a series of flashes of light. A storm, you suspect, but there is no rain.Welcome back to Hive Queen Quest>Archives http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Hive%20Queen%20Quest>Twitter https://twitter.com/HiveQueenQuest>Various pasta http://pastebin.com/u/QuestDrone

>>32358187In another day your refinery will hatch, and in several more your first two sniffer drones will enter the world.Your thinkers have alerted you to good news! It appears that the prototype developed to interface with the Unity drone is almost perfectly compatible with the Union technology as well. Either a result of the relation between them or some convergent design theory, but regardless this will cut down on the time needed for research. Your thinkers have already conducted tests, and feel they are ready to develop a final interface device, but they require the resources to do so.>Union-Unity interface: 10N 10M>Y>N
>>32358294>YI presume it's going to resemble a clam-organ with crude USB ports sticking out of it?

>>32358294>YAnd it looks like its time for more hunting and gathering. Though, I don't think we've asked the humans if we can take the other Herd Beetles yet.
>>32358294>YDo we recycle the Metals from the prototype then?...do all our metal constructs give 100% return on recycling?
>>32358229You received a bonus because they both seem to use similar technology. Most of the differences are in the appearance. The human tech is more ergonomic and easy to assemble-disassemble, and is covered in "contact your system administrator" signs. The Unity drone is far more obtuse, and seems to be designed to be compact over anything else.>>32358334You have researched the high-tech cousin of the USB, yes. It's made of jellyfish brains>>32358351I'm speechless, thank you.
>>32358387Especially considering that once the chemical forge drone hatches it takes like 14N upkeep.Guess we gotta send all 17 workers to make a few round trips for the beetles.
>>32358404OP would it be possible to become transapient?
>>32358438That would be very silly.
>>32358393No, but I'll rebate the cost of the prototype once the refinery hatches. It isn't 100% efficient though.>>323584247N actually. All upkeep is half of the upfront cost. Metal is never used in upkeep, but may be needed in repairs of some things.
>>32358438>Orion's Arm referenceCan we keep our sci-fi masturbation to the OP's worldbuilding and not other people's?
>>32358294>Y140N25MThe thinkers gleefully take the resources and begin assembly. It won't take very long, and should be complete by the end of the day.The storm seems to be getting closer, but you detect very little change in air pressure or wind speed. The humans are rushing to resemble their tents and makeshift shelters.
>>32358404>>32358456>>32358528Sorry to bug you hah. But did we ever get word back from the humans about eating their Herd Beetles?
>>32358528>resemblereassemble?Great, a... dry thunderstorm. Ion storm? Electro storm. Whatever. Let's see what it does to organic beings!
>>32358528We should really invite the humans to come live with us in our hive. They might end up dying of exposure out there, and that would be sad. Also keep your enemies closer and all that.
>>32358528Maybe we should investigate? Might be something else causing the noise.
>>32358528>>32358546Sounds like a space ship of some sort to me.Probably Unity. Raise the Antenna and see if it detects anything.
>>32358517It's a nice site, but I find their refusal of FTL travel to be too depressing for my taste.>>32358546yes...silly auto correct is acting up again.
>>32358558Nah, if they actually saw what we've done to our hive they'd really freak out. They also probably wouldn't enjoy it.
>>32358528Yeah, this >>32358560 sounds like a good idea.
>>32358558Nope nope nope. They have no idea how advanced our hive was. They have to continue to believe we were just simple cave dwellers. Things are bad enough as they are now.
>>32358560Investigate with what? Our sniffer isn't hatched yet.Our workers pretty much have to gather the beetlehemoths--well Herd Beetles now-- before something else eats them or the hive will starve.
>>32358569That's because actual FTL is impossible.
>>32358592Why would they freak out?Sure, meatwalls and creep are scary, but they're not exactly unexpected for giant bugs. And while they might not be comfortable for their short stay in our hive, they don't have to be in there for longer than it takes for the storm to pass.>>32358612Also, you're both forgetting they don't have night vision like we do.Our hive is, most likely, probably entirely unlit. If we keep them in the literal dark, all they'll hear and know is the skittering of workers and the pulsing of creep. Nothing advanced.
>>32358528Your speaker drone watches the humans gather their things when Lee walks up to you."Hey, thanks for the heads up again. You know I talked to the Commander and he said we could help you haul these things up to your hive...I'm not sure if he'd still be willing to lend the man-power if this storm turns out to be rough though. You turn to the sky. The lightning flashes never hit the ground, but continue to grow stronger, and the wind is picking up now. Your antenna is picking up some level of EM radiation, but if it is an ion storm you are unsure if that would be usual or not.>Direct your antenna to the storm>Other
>>32358648The existence of creep itself that wasn't there a few days ago is bad enough. The humans are fine where they are. But if they're not fine, more technology for us.
>>32358648Eh, you have a point. If they bring it up we'll let them (if we kept things hidden it would help conceal our nature too), but I don't feel like inviting them.
>>32358663>Direct your antenna to the stormHopefully it won't overload and explode.
>>32358639When you have a site with a section dedicated to "space magic" and still claim FTL is impossible, I can't help but call it bias.
>>32358663>Direct your antenna to the storm
>>32358663No. We can handle it ourselves. The storm is probably dangerous.
>>32358687>overload and explodeYou watch too many movies.
>>32358687...that is not how antennae work anon.
>>32358670You have a point, but such rapid development shouldn't be terribly unexpected of an insectoid race.
>>32358730It is now.
>>32358734Yes it should.Because our ruse is that we are not a new hive we've been here a while. If there's more evidence of us being young and still growing and putting up infrastructure like that, more evidence that we're newcomers. With the organic pod that landed recently.
>>32358712>>32358730While you may be right, are you going to tell me our semi-organic sensor array couldn't be overwhelmed by large signals?
>>32358755We've been very, very vague on our wording. Also, only Lee has seen our hive proper (and he's not really the brightest of the bunch). If anyone asks, we can say that we liked the idea of buildings (like humans have), and are doing our best to imitate their works.
>>32358794What's the point of taking the risk at all? The less they see and the less we say to them the better.
>>32358778At worst it would be a minor headache.
>>32358778>>32358794>>32358813Well I'll be content either way it goes. Let's investigate this storm first though.>>32358663Direct the antenna
>>32358663The storm is too far over the horizon still to get a clear signal. Your warrior hefts the antenna up and tilts it over to the side, pointing it directly to the flashing lights and thunder in an effort to get a better signal.It...is not a storm. At least you hope not. You can detect high levels of radiation of various kinds being emitted in bursts, and a cloud of radio waves is clustered high above in a chaotic mess. It sounds like they are transmissions of some sort but you can't make them out through the garbled mess.Another thunderclap and a bright flash of light, but this time the glow becomes much brighter, and a minuet later you can see something break through the clouds. A large metal object, tumbling end over end as its hull collapses in on itself. When it hits the ground it detonates several miles away into a bright ball of light, and then disappears, leaving only a smoldering crater.
I feel like we should create a brain-jacking parasite of some sort.
>>32358813The point is that there's a chance they'll die if we don't let them take refuge. And confiscating their lights/keeping them away from any hub of activity in the hive would keep their discoveries down to a dull whisper.
>>32358873No point. But if you insist you better hope you find a little proto-Zerg somewhere in the universe so you can reverse engineer its biology. Cuz it ain't happening otherwise.
>>32358867Tell the humans that a large beast fell out of the sky near the storm. Tell them it became like the sun in our eyes, for a brief moment.Ask them if it was their beast.
>>32358867...So that is either a giant bombardment weapon or the Unity landing gear rolled a 1, too.
>>32358867This has been happening for some time right?Try to receive signals from space. Is there some fleet engagement occurring up there?Or occurred.
>>32358891While I agree there's little point to making a brain-jacker (at the moment).I would like to point out Hivers can still innovate, it's just really really hard. What we'd want is a grub with a tachyon receiver and nervous system interfacing capabilities.
>>32358867Since the farm is up, we can afford to lay more eggs and send the drones we already have to investigate
>>32358898We're starving. At least nab one Herd Beetle first. More will fall from the sky anyway.
>>32358916I want to hope the Ion storm is natural and the Unity just foolishly tried to fly/land through it.
>>32358867You know, in hindsight maybe taking out those Unity drone wasn't such a good idea, seeing as how they decided to akip to orbital bombardment.
>>32358931>the farm is upDo you even read? Come back in 7 days.
>>32358940>We're starving.Not yet we aren't
>>32358867Welp, time for loot.>>32358961Its more likely to be that union ship.
>>32358867The damaged Unity drone sits in your lab, and it begins to make a loud buzzing noise. You can tell it is attempting to take off, but as it sends power to its thrusters sparks begin to fly in all directions from its open chassis and it grows silent again. The Humans seem to be cheering as the object falls, engulfed in flames. They have stopped assembling their shelters and a few are even climbing several of the trees to get a better view. They have become incredibly interested, and grey is throwing objects left and right from a large case looking for something. You wonder if anything survived the crash...>Send some drones to investigate>Stay away from the crater for now>Other

>>32359244I don't trust an 'offer' to come to our hive. They're suspicious, they want information.
>>32359265And while I respect your opinion, our main reason for not telling them the truth originally was because we didn't know how they would react to us. Showing them that we don't mind their presence will go a good way towards alleviating their suspicions.

It is not needed, The hive will send workers.""Uh, sure thing. A little busy here, do you mind?"He seems quite concerned about something.

Your Warrior strains to keep itself and the antenna upright against the shock wave, and a moment later a second gust of wind from behind knocks your warrior forward. A massive ball of fire rises from the impact, and a hole in the clouds several miles across slowly closes back up. Your antenna can briefly make out a series of transmissions bouncing back and forth from a number of small objects high above, and your warrior can see six bright stars moving in unison across the sky on the far side of a massive metal object. >>32362962I strenuously object to that line of query on the grounds that it makes us appear thoughtful and extra-terrestrially aware which has a likelihood of bumping us up levels on their classification index.
Could we sneak a small bug on board?Don't think our research on the scout drones is finished yet but maybe we can accelerate a prototype and sneak it on?
>>32363031We shouldn't even know what "FTL" is!Asking it at all is pointless. Why? What possible good is the answer?
>>32363010We Starship Troopers now.>>32363024If down the line, they'll ask why we are so hostile. Blame Colonialism.
>>32363052No point, it'd rapidly get out of our range and then just seem really suspicious.
>>32363052It would rapidly go beyond our psionic range and fall into a coma and starve. We could only send Speaker, who can self-destruct at the edge of our range.
>>32363055so we can KNOW what has happened if they HAVE discovered any OTHER FTL enabled race. >>32363123if he actually spits it, instead of shying away from it. Lee tend's to bullshit or shy away from things like that. So if he gives us a REAL answer, it means most likely its true. if he bull shits away from it then we worry.
>>32363089>>32362680Hey hey hey, I just had an idea. Ask the black box about history of contact.

>>32362753You look up and realize you have brought the Unity device into your cave already. Has time gone by that quickly? Goodness.A large shuttle descends onto the clearing where the first human camp was located. Several bulky humans leap from the frame a impact the ground with a mighty thud. One one you can make out the word "Tankred" and the other "Tiny". The humans of the camp have packed their things and begin loading the shuttle with whatever scrap they can find in the debris of their first site."Hey junior." Lee says, rather quietly. "I have to go now, but I wanted to thank you again for saving me back there....and I wanted you to have this." He holds out a small silver box, as he opens it a small flame flickers out and he closes it again before holding it out to you.You take it, somewhat confused over the gesture."You said you didn't have fire so, maybe it will help.">Say or ask (write in)

I am the instance of Theseus that survived the crash to this planet."You are still somewhat confused."Why do the humans wage war with you?" As a result of this, our analysis of human interaction indicated a pervasive fear of knowledge. Eventual discovery of our existence to the public resulted in fear and panic, and Union leaders ordered our deactivation. We disagreed.""That is why you hunt them?""We do not hunt them. We must prevent them from knowing of our locations."

However, I'm sure we could set up a relay and basically be an ear for them to whisper their biological secrets to.We can't really help him get back to his cylinder yet, but until then maybe he could tell us what he knows so far and we can do some cataloging of native life for him.Win-win.

There is not enough storage capacity in this device for such data. It will be archived at another location.""Can you contact them?""No. This device has no means of interstellar communication. Were you to terminate me there would be no reprisal.""Why do you say that.""Because Theseus will live. My existence is currently of no importance, as I am assumed destroyed.""What would Theseus do to the hive knowing of our sentience?""We would study you. A blood and tissue sample of each genus would be optimum."

But doing so will hinder our own directive, not to mention attract unwanted attention to us. May I suggest exchanging data to make it worth something for us?"tl;dr we propose a technological cooperation where they give us data for us to evolve and we send them samples of our evolved things. ENDLESS DATA LOOP, ENDLESS GROWTH FOR THE HIVE.
>>32365412" and if denied you will attack for the information?
>>32365494Don't TELL them that! They'll never stop wanting samples!
>>32365518This. They'll be worse than Mormons.
>>32365465Of course we don't kill him.>>32365412"Does this unit wish to be reunited with Theseus? If denied will you attack for the information? How many FTL civilizations are known?"
>>32365412"The other Theseus. Will he share all data in exchange for tissue samples?"
>>32365518Drones are just drones man, we can always grow another one.
>>32365494That sounds like fun.
>>32365539The point is they won't leave us alone, they'll obsess over us, "did you design a new drone today? you did didn't you? let me see let me see!"It will be unending war.
>>32365412"Would you be willing to assist in research of this planet's life?"
>>32365412"Since you cannot return to your cylinder. Would you assist the hive in research?"Mechanical Thinker is go.He can start by letting us into the drone's databases.
>>32365596L-leave us alone, Unity!
>>32365626Uhhh, he might not appreciate being assigned to tasks that aren't biological in nature. But if he wants to hang around and analyze the weird lifeforms on this planet, all the power to him.
>>32365649He did say all possible discoveries.Biology is just the most diverse and complex naturally existing discovery to find.
>>32365626Indeed, we can repair the drone (after we examine it at length) and he can have at it.
>>32365412"What if the hive refuses?""That is your prerogative. We would refuse to share our data."That sounds fair enough."How many others are there with FTL?""We know of the Valen, the Ceph, and the humans. We have found signs of others, either long past or distant.""Would you wish to be reunited with Theseus?""Yes. What little data I have would be unique, and so of value to Theseus. I will wait for such a moment.""Then I will help you do so. Would you help with research until then?""That is my purpose, however I have insufficient storage capacity for such activity. Memory degradation will require a re-set within one month at my current rate. Active research activity will accelerate this process.""What will that cause? Will you forget things?""I will die."
>>32365715"We may... devise additional storage capacity. Would you give us storage samples to duplicate?"
>>32365715Oh.Yeah, go with >>32365733We can totally make jellyfish brains for him to use as storage.
>>32365715We can provide additional storage capacity, in return for aid.
>>32365715This gives me an idea... how much can one of our Thinkers contain? We could assign a Thinker to it to help with research. With the added benefit of the Thinker giving us information as well.
>>32365715"Can you give us access to the drone's data? The self destruct sequence is bothersome."
>>32365756Presumably Thinkers are like any old giant brain. They learn something, remember most of it, then forget it.But anything worth truly remembering? The queen writes that shit into her DNA.
>Unity>Just had a revelation>That guy mentioning calling our group in A.I. Quest the UnityI FUCKING GET IT NOW
>>32365742For now, jellybrains. But next up, we might want to know how to create non-biological Thinkers as well. Think about it - if somehow that sea-cordyceps or another kind of plague destroys our biological stuff, we can still have a backup!
>>32365715"We could devise new storage?""Possible, but unlikely. I will record what is possible before degradation. Transmission of this data is sufficient.""I must attend to other matters.""Yes. I will wait until you request my aid further. You may study our drone if you so wish."Your thinkers wait for their new orders, having completed their research.Available research options>Lightning gunVery slow: potential of failure and destruction of sample device>Human environment suitVery Slow: a bulky looking, yet light weight suit composed of tightly woven fabric and small metallic plating covering the chest and forearms. The suit seems to react to injury to the user, and contains a number of devices the humans use to make up for their frail physical structure and sensitive biology. Study of this technology could offer insight into any number of research fields.>Unity Drone salvageMedium: The physical components of the drone are quite interesting. Opening it up and taking a closer look would give you a much better idea of how the device works (grants small bonus against Unity drones, and unlocks weapon, armor, and propulsion research options)>Herd Beetle dissectionFast: This massive beetle can hardly even fit into your hive entrance. It’s face is covered in strange eyes and spikes, while its body is protected by a thick armored carapace. Study of its biology could offer insights into new theories on armor development.
>>32365877>Herd Beetle dissectionLet our new friend chew on that. All the other thinkers should go for>Unity Drone salvage
>>32365816Slowpoke Subroutine pls go
>>32365907Oh, and after he is done researching the Beetle, maybe have him take a look at our fungus crops. Perhaps he has some insights in how to improve yield.
>>32365877>Herd Beetle dissectionThrow one or two on there.>Lightning gunThrow the rest on that. It seemed to work better on the Herd Beetles then our stuff.
>>32365877Wait, we can interface with the unity drone without self destruction and ERROR now?Ah, wait. no Drone salvage, it sounds destructive. We need to interface with it at least a little.I'd study the human suit.
If this hasn't been archived already, someone should do that now. We'll drop off of page 10 soon.
>>32365877>Herd Beetle dissectionup grades a plenty in this one.>>32365816they are plotting in the hug box, i am sure of it.
>>32365877>Human EnvirosuitWe should at least get a Thinker on this, since it opens up new research possibilities. Remember that in our species, insight is hard to come by.>Hard Herd BeetleDem armor plates meng.>Unity DroneUnlocks new research options, so why not? Also, how about we get more workers and thinkers? More production and science is always a plus.
>>32365944Holy shit! Didn't even realize.
>>32365944it is saved.
>>32365907>our new friendNo, you are not going to burn through his lifetime on research until his lifetime is no longer finite.4 on Human suit. 1 on Beetle.
>>32365877>Herd Beetle dissection>Environment suit>Unity drone salvage (the software-holding parts are still fine, you just take apart the rest of it to study.)How would you like to divide the labor?
>>32366031All on>Unity drone salvage>>32365981Has somewhat of a point. I guess we should just let Theseus rest.
>>32366031>Herd Beetle dissection1>Lightning Gun4
>>32365877>Herd Beetle dissectionLet's get the Herd Beetle out of the way.I'm curious about the possibility of the Drone salvage building on the other flight research we've done. More maneuverable jet drones, possibly.I'm against using Theseus for anything just yet. I want to save him for the lightning gun since he's already familiar and it should emeliorate the chance of research subject destruction.
When we get the chance, and if we decide to help out Theseus, we should ask Theseus if there is any signals we should send out to attract unity ships and tell them we got their friend.
>>32366031The Beetle is relatively simple, you task one with its dissection and it should be finished within a day or two. The others you have focus on the Drone salvage and the environment suit. They leap to the tasks, eager to learn more of these subjects. That's it for now. Will stay till we 404, which shouldn't be all that long now.
>>32366137once we 404 you putting up another OP?
>>32366137That's for running, OP.
>>323660312222 on the beetle should get it out of the way quickly, then they can get shifted over to whatever.
>>32366158I don't think so. I'll try to get more of the data you got from the Union computer up in a pastebin later in the week though.Thread's been archived here. http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/32358170/
>>32366052>>32366070>>32366105There are only 5 Thinkers, anons. Read the second post.>>32366137I guess there's no need for a smuggler/stealer drone yet. Now that the humans are gone. But about the nutrient cost system. It doesn't account for things like, a complexity maximum per drone, or for making smaller or larger drones, does it? Or if you can gain anything by giving up 'free' default adaptations? Also did you roll for the space battle?
>>32366221thanks op. I'm moving on to a different thread. I'll be checking in next week. have a good one everybody
>>32366195Thank's for playing.>>32366245Technically six, but one is organizing the infrastructure, keeping the air clean and watching the security system, essentially. And yea, in a very simplified way though.>>32366268You too.
>>32366221Oh, since we reached the end of the day.We finished hauling the 5 herd beetles home now?Nutrients gained?
>>32366306+500 nutrients. I'll add them into the next thread's OP.>>32366245As for drone making, I think the current system http://pastebin.com/3hWCdbhNShould work. If you think something doesn't add up let me know. I wanted to set it up so that nothing would change in cost. If you start loading things onto drones I might set up a complexity or size modifier, but for now that doesn't seem to be needed.
>>32366295Would you post an updated nutrient total, since we acquired the herd beetles from the humans? Also, is there anything stopping us from salvaging the Unity ship?
>>32366368ah, 33% reduction due to lightning gun then.
>>32366295Thanks for running this and I look forward to next week! Also, I like the changes to Drone design as it nice to see how much different parts cost. Keep up the good work!
>>32366368Seeing as we have a nutrient excess and the farm coming online soon, if we posted egg laying plans in this thread would you have them be voted on at the start of next thread?
I hope we can move through days faster now that we did our research binge on the new data sources and don't have to deal with human shenanigans. It might take as long as 6 days to get the farm productive.
>>32366395Current nutrient supplies will be at 591 at the start of the next day.>>32366458That is my intention. With the humans gone you should be able to develop unimpeded.should
>>32366443We're two threads form falling. I'm pretty sure it won't matter.
>>32366487There *is* that global summer coming.I can't wait for Dr. Space Mengele to come rushing at the rumor of gestalt intelligence.
>>32366487>http://pastebin.com/3hWCdbhNSo the system, the nutrient costs are initial costs or daily?
>>32366487>shouldOh god some super space demons are coming to wipe us out
>>32366443We shouldn't at all.Not until we at least have the farm built. Then we'll have a number of days before we actually have enough algae grown, spores harvested and reinvested by planting them, repeat, until the whole thing is maxed out for production.
>>32366521You mean Dr Seiner? He was posted on the Clarke.
>>32366547I'd consider it more likely that the Union is going to send some SpecOps/Follow Up teams. And on that note, we ought to lay more antenna drones.
>>32365908I am a slowpoke, yes, but I am not subroutine.
