Hive Queen Quest 5The rain has finally stopped, although the overcast remains. The sun is little more than a dim glow in the sky, although it seems to have been getting brighter and brighter each day.Your drone watches with the humans as three objects pierce the clouds above with a sonic boom. They bank sharply to bleed off their speed and the humans quickly begin to tear apart their camp for anything still intact. Your speaker drone attempts to stand, but a sudden shock of pain runs through its legs and they buckle beneath the weight. Three of the drone’s legs have been severely injured from the explosion. You can do little but watch as the humans gather what is left of their supplies in a panic and pull their wounded to the edge of the jungle.Elsewhere, your workers continue to install the organic infrastructure of your hive, and the first series of doors have been completed. Soon your hive will be the prim and proper palace you envision. Your two warriors have been placed on guard duty to protect the workers as they install the exterior doors, and they report a radio signal from above; three sources, each pulsing in the same rhythmic fashion. You determine they are the three falling objects, which are now spiraling down from the sky. It is not all bad news however; your thinkers report that they have concluded their research of the ocean substance that claimed the life of one of your workers, and although they have yet to produce an anti-toxin, it seems the substance could be worked around.

It is composed primarily of three components, the toxic surface layer, the rich inner layer of sap, and a stringy layer of tendrils that drift along the ocean floor. The first layer emits spores which infect a host, causing large tumors to grow in the brain until the subject’s skull bursts open, releasing the spores and spreading the substance to other locations. The second layer is similar to blood in nature, and contains a dense network of decentralized organs which process energy into nutrients needed for the substance to grow. The last layer is a network of roots that extract energy from microbial life in the water.Available research options>Lightning gun – Very slow, potential of failure and destruction of sample device>Local fauna samples – Medium, (cost 10 Nutrients in lost food) testing locally gathered food sources may yield insight into the nature of the local biology>Human environment suit – Very Slow, a bulky looking, yet light weight suit composed of tightly woven fabric and small metallic plating covering the chest and forearms. The suit seems to react to injury to the user, and contains a number of devices the humans use to make up for their frail physical structure and sensitive biology. Study of this technology could offer insight into any number of research fields.
>>31873180Research has produced new adaptations>Internal – Filter lungs: A set of additional lungs mounted along the side of the abdomen filters spores and undesired particles from the air. The lungs inflate, pulling in the air through filters along the abdomen, and then slowly process it through a series of bladders as the air is slowly exhaled. In closed spaces this drone can serve to purify infected areas, or serve as scouts in areas of extreme biological hazards. The lungs are unarmored, and vulnerable to attack or accidental injury.
>>31873180we gotta research them local fauna samples asap
Can we develop a complex worker, to include some of the decision making ability of the thinkers, and a psionic relay. Sort of a foreman to guide and organize groups of workers in the field?
>>31873180>Lightning gun – Very slow, potential of failure and destruction of sample deviceDid we get another sample?
>>31873329You did, from the remains of the dead human you found in the jungle.>>31873328A thinker could easily command a team of workers with relative autonomy, although they would have trouble with new and unforeseen situations. A relay would only be needed if the workers were outside of your range, and so far it seems you have yet to reach the limit to that range.
>>31873205The lungs are nice, but I was hoping for a filter that requires no maintainance. Can we produce organic pipes that contain these filters every few kilometers?Research local fauna samplesProduce 1 winged scout with:>Standard Warrior Antennae>Standard Warrior Mandibles>Standard Worker Arms>Standard Worker Claws>No legs>Wings>Standard Worker Carapace>Filter LungsGood at collecting samples, cheap throw-away unit that can sacrifice itself to hold down an enemy for other units to attack.
>>31873285You are unsure of what most of these samples are, but they seem to all be edible.
>>31873180Research Local Fauna sounds like the best immediate option..>>31873382So it would be just more effective to breed more thinkers at this point.
>>31873441Everything is technically a drone, including your growing infrastructure. You could integrate the filters into your air circulation system with relative ease, but it would inevitably increase the upkeep cost slightly.>>31873466Each thinker can research one topic at a time, command a group of drones on your behalf, or offer a stat bonus to drones you control. More thinkers assigned to the same task will boost each other with diminishing returns.
>>31873522Then let's get started on a piping system to connect the ocean blood to our base. I wonder if underground is safer than the surface?
>>31873205Your direct your thinkers to their new subject. A worker gathers samples from your food supply and takes them to the lab for testing. You are unsure of what to look for, so you make sure the thinkers are thorough in their examination of the small plants and animal samples. As for other topics. Your hive has grown, and your nutrient stores are in good stock. How will you spend your resources, if at all today?>design new drone>produce more of an existing design>none
>>31873522Yeah, that was what I would be going for. A specialized worker that gave stat bonus to nearby drones.Limited usefulness in other positions, unlike the thinkers who will be diverted to more pressing issues such as research. We should work on a natural flying system for scouts. The wings we have seem to be gliding wings rather than flight.Do we have designs for a Burrowing-Mining Drone yet?Processing Drone next I think.
>>31873636>design new droneBurrowing/mining type
>>31873636Lets design one with these>Olfactory enhancement – dissection of the alien predator has revealed that it is actually blind. Its head is covered in powerful olfactory receptors capable of following a scent at great distance. Drones with this adaptation would be able to follow the scent trail of known creatures or objects at great distances at the cost of other senses. By further dulling other senses the effect can be boosted.>EM sensitivity – the small sensors on the legs of the dissected predator are adapted to detect and home in on electric fields to find food underground. Drones with this adaptation will be able to sense electric currents at a distance at the cost of speed.
>>31873594The thick film along the ocean's surface contains the thick juice. You would first need to harvest the nutrients without contaminating it with the spores that grow on the top before you would be able to pipe it to your hive.>>31873675The wings offer powered flight, but require a bit of effort to take off. A very small drone built for rapid flight would have much less of an issue with this.Of course, the large predatory creature you have seen flying above seems to have developed its own method of flight. Were you to kill one and study it you may learn its method of propulsion.
>>31873441And before I forget. The local map of the area.
>>31873784So we need a filter.
>>31873784we can't drill a hollow tube through the film and suck out the juice?
>>31873636>design new droneWinged Scout >>31873441Basic Miner:>Standard Warrior Antennae>Some Sonar attachment>Standard Worker Mandibles>Standard Worker Arms>Standard Worker Claws>Standard Worker Legs>EM sensitivity>Standard Warrior Carapace>Filter LungsProcessor Drone>Psionic Relay>Standard Warrior Carapace>Chemical Forge>that's it>>31873784>>31873824So we need to research more fauna to develop a more powerful immune system and more effective filters.I still say we could get rid of most of the powder using gravity. Pump the contaminated juice into a reservoir, and let the juice flow down while the powder floats upwards. Upgraded Filters could get rid of the rest.
>>31873824The juice is only contaminated if mixed with the spores. If harvested with care the risk of contamination is decreased greatly.>>31873857This could work.
>>31873891We could just create a pipe that has a filter near the end where it comes out so we don't have to worry about contamination.
>>31873636I like this >>31873724 and I wouldn't mind adding the filters to our air circulation system
>>31873889Do we have to research a honey pot carapace?Winged Scout should have a smaller carapace as well. I'd feel better with a venomous beetle.
>>31873636Your current drones consist of the standard thinker, worker, and warrior, and a single "speaker" drone designed to permit you to communicate with the humans. The speaker is currently in quite the action packed moment right now.>Current design suggestions>Basic miner drone>Processor drone>Scout drone>Other
>>31873957A honey pot would seem simple enough. A carapace that would contain a large, unarmored sack that could be used to carry liquefied nutrients or other such liquids.
>>31873999I'd like to have that drone from last thread for radio waves, if a technological enemy is landing here.Satellite drone. Something composed entirely of EM antennae for long-range electronic transmissions (radio waves). We only need one of these... or maybe 3, spread out, for triangulation of the source. Shape could be tall and slender like one long antennae made of lots of antennae... or like a flower, spread out. That might be less clumsy to carry and relocate, lower center of gravity/fits in lower areas below trees and cave ceilings.
>>31874041yeah, make a drone with a honey pot and a needle tongue that can penetrate the film and suck out juice. Then it can carry the juice back in the pot/stomach.
>>31873999Our workers only have three slots on their head for senses, right?Forager drones:Replace compound eyes and sound antennae both, with two pair of smell antennae. The better for tracking prey. They can then catalog the various smells of food we've caught before, so they can find it easier. It won't matter if they're deaf if their double smell antennae can smell enemies coming. or a few standard drones with sound antennae can come with them.
>>31874056By sacrificing other components you could produce a rather cheap radio antenna>>31874123By default a drone has sight and hearing. The antennae serve as a boost or addition to their normal senses, but you are free to remove the eyes and replace them with more sensors if you wish.
>>31873999New drone suggestions>mining drone>foraging drone>harvesting "honey pot" drone>flying scout drone>refinery drone>radio droneAir filtration will be implemented into hive infrastructure. The risk of infection has been greatly reduced.
>>31873696>>31873999>>Basic miner droneIs that the custom one that gives up eyes for more sound antennae? Also the arms are currently blades. 'Sword' equivalents with light mass and sharp edges aren't as effective at mining as 'pickaxe' equivalents, with high mass and a single point for penetrating rock(or...armor?). They should also have graft ports in their arms, like warriors do, so that they can be enhanced in the future with pickaxe grafts of metal that are even tougher, sharper, and heavier than organic exoskeleton... or could even incorporate drills instead.(Also since they don't need to walk fast, give them EM sensing legs adaptation. because why not. we might need some unit with that talent someday, and might as well be something that doesn't go fast anyway.)
>>31874330proposed miner drone>digger claws>graft port arms>EM sensitivity>sonar>blindDo you wish to include a chemical forge?
>>31874402No, too bulky, right? We have a dedicated one.what's the nutrient cost then?
>>31874326Radio drone is a must right now with the current situation.A few Honey pot drones and maybe one or two flying scouts would be nice.Mining droid & Rinery drone combo would also be pretty nice.
>>31873889>Processor DroneI... don't understand the point of psionic relay and a warrior carapace here.why not just an immobile forge? we don't have to process things outside the hive/mine.
>>31874402Well since said miner won't be going anywhere fast I think it would be a good idea.
>>31874475But it makes them much bigger and costlier to maintain.
>>31874426Adding a chemical forge would make it quite large, yes. Although it would be able to store the mined metals in a processed, liquid form and would directly provide usable metals as opposed to raw materials.
>>31874402No. We need the miner to be able to dig fast and move in case there's a threat to it's life. The processors should be able to move, but speed isn't so much a factor in the chemical forge as long as it's away from the front lines.Unless you like having a mobile forge falling in lava or a nest of something?
>>31874501naw, lets just make a big immobile chemical forge drone in the hive and have the miners dump materials into it
>>31874528Also we want it to be able to dig small tunnels not be forced to dig large ones ALL the time.
as a general security measure: an aural equivalent to the radio waves receiver. sonar. Nothing but sound antennae, manned by a Thinker, near the entrance to the hive. To listen, analyze the sounds of the environment so that we have a baseline for what's "normal" noise, and then it can stand guard to detect aberrations in this signal that may be caused by approaching threats. Should be able to cover a much broader frequency range at higher sensitivity than a single pair of antennae?
>>31874501This seems to be a subject of debate>include a chemical forge with the diggerWould make the digger larger and more costly, but it would be able to process a large amount of metals directly, which could then be retrieved by workers. Good for large veins and strip mining.>make a digger and refinery dronea more mobile team of workers. The digger would be smaller, faster, and cheaper but would be able to move less rock at once. Good for small veins that are spread out.
We could also send a group of workers to assist with the human clean up effort. Poach additional tech while we can too.Might need to breed a second Speaker. The current one is damaged but functioning.
>>31874467>Warrior CarapaceProtection from accidents and a way to distribute metal armor to warrior drones>psionic relayIf mining ever reaches a bottleneck, we may need to process metals outside the hive, in which case the relay is to maintain control over the miners
>>31874653We don't know what kinds of veins we have access to yet. The specialized duo could handle most situations effectively.
>>31874582Your workers are capable of digging through solid rock. They are just much slower at it and are not specialized at finding ore. They could serve as miners, but would not be very good at it.>>31874608A cluster of antennae could serve this purpose well.
>>31874653Though the combo is a great idea, it'll probably be most effective once we're mining asteroids.
>>31874653>make a digger team and one big refinery drone>like one really big refinery drone>like HUGE big>like oh damn is it crowded in here big>like we're gonna need to expand this hive big
>>31874671We are nowhere near needing that yet then. It's kinda gratuitous expense at this point. We have no need to expand beyond our psionic range yet.No, why does processing have to have a carapace to move around at all?>way to distribute metal armor to warrior dronesHuh? What? That doesn't exist, and why would it be more suitable to deliver than workers?
>>31874770>Standard Warrior – Heavy segmented armor plates can be shed and consumed when damaged to quickly heal after combat. Capable of incorporating metals by consuming refined alloys in order to reinforce the armor. Can easily shrug off most small arms fire, but is vulnerable along the flexible joints.they contain metals. Although OP stated earlier that the metal can somehow be excreted in liquid form and given to warriors, so I suppose this point is moot.>gratuitous expenseI'm just trying to standardize things at a little extra cost now.>No, why does processing have to have a carapace to move around at all?I...did not understand that.
>>31874653so far the idea seems to be>diggerblindEM sensitive legsdigger clawssonarwarrior carapacewarrior armscost 10upkeep 5>processorblindchemical forgecost 25upkeep 12
>>31874714Okay for the moment let's keep them as separate drones. Miners and a single refinery.
>>31874840Oh, that. That means we feed them metals as part of their diet here in the hive. They don't need that in the field at all.So what's the point of the drone again? Psionic relays already exist separately, no need to roll into something else.
>>31874608Guard Drone:Worker Antenna + Olfactory EnhancementWarrior Mandibles, Limbs, Legs, + CarapaceFilter LungsThey should be able to handle security.>>31874770>why does processing have to have a carapace to move around at allIt needs a body. Call it Honeypot, it's easier. Why does it need legs I think you're asking. Which is fine, it's a metal processing queen, so moving would be useful, it's not the end of the world. We might move processing around to be closer to the mining points, but it doesn't have to move fast.
>>31874874>warrior carapace>warrior armsHow about just a worker carapace. Can it have no arms, but have graft ports for its digger claws for upgrade later?
>>31874874We should tell the humans about those three radio signals with the speaker.
>>31874874>warrior carapace>warrior armsThat is unnecessary.Just give them worker parts instead.
>>31874925>We should tell the humans about those three radio signals with the speaker.....they can SEE the goddamn things in the sky, anon. They heard the sonic boom they made and looked up.
>>31874840A drone with a chemical forge essentially has a massive, over-sized stomach that is used to eat metal ore. Processed alloy comes out the other end.A carapace is not just the equivalent to skin, but also it serves as bones. Each limb is contained in an exoskeleton and supported by a bone. The two connect at the joints, and are made of similar material.
>>31874889>They don't need that in the field at all.yeah, like I said, did not expect it to be so easy to distribute metal alloys.>Psionic relaysto maintain control over miner drones. Using the passive, already protected unit for the relay sounds perfectly reasonable, right? You could say I'm being a little OC about this, but I just don't want this to be a problem later on.
>>31874990But it doesn't save anything to shove it into one drone. We can deploy and lay psionic relays wherever we like.
>>31874981I don't think they know they are already landing though.
>>31875026>look up>see three enemy drones trailing down from the sky>not thinking they're landingAnon, humans aren't THAT stupid.
>>31874990The psionic relay is unnecessary and redundant at this point.
>>31875006The relay will actually be protected by the guards protecting the relay. That's important if the enemies ever figure out how to destroy relays. If we can deploy them anywhere, maintainance costs aren't a problem.>>31875056>at this pointthat's what I'm saying. For a minimal cost upfront, we can standardize the processor drones for the long term, and create a system for ore gathering/processing that doesn't need to be changed based on distance. We can also interchange processors if one of them fails due to an attack or something.
>>31874990>did not expect it to be so easy to distribute metal alloys.I felt that making upgrades needlessly difficult would be less fun, honestly. If a thinker is within range of a drone when the drone looses connection with you, the thinker will take over and resume fulfilling your last command. When it is done, or impossible the thinker and worker(s) will attempt to return to you.Without a thinker, however, most workers will simply become dormant.>>31875026The humans appear to be packing up their camp. They are leaving behind many interesting things and focusing on boxes marked with a red cross, and crates of edible bricks. From the sound of it, it seems the three objects are what destroyed their ship.Odd, your drone can see them rather well now. Each one is a small white sphere, only slightly larger than the humans themselves, and each one has four slender appendages sticking out in front of it. By their speed they will be at the camp quite soon.
>>31875118>The relay will actually be protected by the guards protecting the relay....you mean the forge. In which case we lay a psionic relay, and have it in the same room at the forge. if we feel like it.
>>31875118The answer is NO shitty namefag.
To head off any potential argument. All the mapped area is within range of your control. Relays will only become important when you start building more distant outposts on other continents and off world.
>>31875179ah. well. Nevermind about them relays then.
>>31875140It seems the hunt is afoot. Can our speaker get any more information about what is being left at the camp or more details on the three mysterious alien drones?
>>31875183The human camp. You take a moment to admire how much better your hive looks in comparison.
>>31875140>Odd, your drone can see them rather well now.Oh, they're coming HERE?It sounded like they were... landing far away.Retreat and hid retreat and hide, Speaker!>>31875211Dude it was already explained repeatedly why only now getting it
>>31875183No, the human camp. Hopefully and probably they won't even notice us unless we take action.

>>31876498It's still on page 9 to me, man. That's gonna take a long time now that prime hours are gone.
>>31876498Forager is a worker drone with Olfactory enhancement and EM sensitivity.
>>31876498just so you know it actually takes a long time to fall off the board, even from page 9. You probably got anywhere from 30 mins to an hour and a half
>>31876498Alright, then what about a question about the drones themselves. Are we able to make major modifications to a drone or do we need to make a new drone entirely?
>>31876550I suspect we have a little less than an hour left.
>>31876498Okay, we need drones with keen sense of smell.Add extremely enhanced smell at the cost of compound eyes and sound?I guess kind of a Tracker more than a Forager for hunting food.
>>31876585We have about an hour.
>>31876498It'll be on page for a bit.Is there a tiny scout drone we could cobble together?Small frame, wings, improved light vision is really all it would need. Nothing too useful for combat yet.
>>31876550>>31876573Good point, we seemed to have shot to the bottom and are now just sorta hanging there like a stubborn man in a noose. It looks like we're at the bottom of page 9 though.>>31876576You can "graft" components onto drones (essentially cybernetics) but you can't genetically alter existing ones. You can recycle them by consuming old drones, however.
>>31876207Oh wait, what about the cost for the sessile radio drone and the sonar-antennae drone? We have to lay those yeah?
>>31876674AH! I almost forgot about that.Yeah we need one of those as well.
>>31876670>radio antenna>sonar antennaA dedicated drone built to detect different manners of threats or signals could have more than one kind of antennae at the cost of other parts, such as legs and arms.
>>31876740Losing arms might be a good idea
>>31876740Yeah I mean a Specialty of nothing but antennae it doesn't need anything else.Doesn't need to move around on its own or have a stomach or anything. just hookups for thinkers.
Or we could build multiple specialized drones to handle different antennae packages.Sonar burrowers, radio fliers, things like that.
>>31876815Exactly what I was thinking.
>>31876498make us focus and agree on something before moving on to something elseotherwise designing new drones will turn out like this everytime
>>31876825Sonar burrowers are good for finding extremely scarce resources, like gems, but for overall efficiencies, it's better to leave digging to the miners.Radio fliers sounds good.
>>31876825This is also a possibility.>>31876830>>31876815An antenna array would cost 20 nutrients, and be able to utilize radar and sonar. A single array would be enough to detect the general area of large objects, while several of them could pinpoint smaller objects of interest. Radar would only work for airborne objects, while sonar would be able to listen in on ambient noise to serve as an early warning system.
>>31876995I meant radio antennae. as in. eavesdrop on electronic transmissions.would it do that though? satellite drone.
>>31877057Indeed it could. While normally it would serve as radar, if there were other sources of radio signals it could feed them to a thinker to decipher.I'll set up the new thread real quick.
>>31876928> Sonar burrowers are good for finding extremely scarce resourcesNo, I mean small burrowing wormlike drones that would move through the top soil to consume food and detect large movement above ground.
>>31877104oh, that's good too. I don't suppose this could also be used to build hive tunnels?
>>31877142They said soil.Soft little worms don't traditionally burrow through rock.
