A single worker stands watch near the base of your mountain. The rising sun of the new day hardly pieces the thick overcast sky, and as your worker maintains its vigil it begins to rain. The day is warm despite the dense clouds, and the mud runs thick with the waterlogged spores that often fill the air.You are the Hive Queen, the driving force and singular will of the hive. It was born because of you, and it will live for you. You have raised your first clutch of drones and with them you have secured your pod from the dense fungal forest. The thinker within has been carefully removed and has been put to work analyzing the nutrient filled jelly that stains the spring water in your hive. The pod itself has been salvaged for resources, torn to pieces and consumed. It has provided a small boon to your reserve of nutrients and metals. Now that your workers have returned you can focus on expanding. You now know that you are not alone on this planet, and that the creatures you have encountered are very strange indeed. You have yet to determine the location of their hive, if that is what they even live in, and have explored very little of the surrounding area. They seem to be easily frightened, but they still seem unaware of your presence and you have no way of knowing their intentions or temperament.Six workers are currently standing lookout at the entrances of your hive, with them you see a group of small objects flying in a circular pattern over the forest, otherwise the area appears calm. You know full well that the only way to survive shall be to expand your hive, but you have reached the limit of what the nutrient rich jelly you harvest from the fungal mass in your chamber can provide. You could pull in a full harvest, but it would likely kill the fungus, putting an end to its steady stream of resources, but granting you a large sum immediately. Regardless, you will need to find a new source of food if you are to feed any more drones.

>>31548855sweet, I love these sorts of quests. Let's send out some drones to search deeper in the caves (5, maybe?) and some to explore the forest (10), both parties looking for more food sources. The remaining ones are on look out and we will consult the thinker about maximizing the output of the fungus
>>31548855Let's send some drones to see if there is any edible plant or animal life around the forests. Let's say, 10. I want to send 2 west to investigate the shifting ground that you described last thread. This should be covert. If they die it is no problem. Some of the 10 should definitely head south to see if they can find that stampede we saw last thread.
>>31548855Your drones have been patrolling the cave network looking for any dangers. The caves seem to all extend outwards from the spring in your chamber, which is a large circular room roughly fifteen feet in diameter. In the center is a large fungal mass that secretes a sweet, nutrient rich jelly which it uses to filter minerals it feeds on from the water. You have been able to use the jelly to support your hive until now. There are three caves that extend from the chamber and wind through the rock of the mountain to the valley beyond, depositing the red stained water into a small river that separates the valley from the fungal forest, and leads west.Using the thinker's processing power, you come to the conclusion that the jelly is produced at a fixed rate to correspond to the abundance of natural minerals in the spring. You cannot think of any way to increase the output, but it may be possible to grow new fungi to produce it.
>>31549059Have the drones explore in a small radius around the cave. Take stock of our surroundings.
>>31549059Current suggested options>send drones west>send drones south>send drones to comb the forest for foodPlease select a division of labor
>>31549113Let's see if the Thinker can think of a way to farm the jelly.
>>315491132 west2 south10 to comb the forest for foodThe first two are just gathering intelligence. We need to know what is there.
>>31549113>send drones west - 5>send drones south - 5>send drones to comb the forest for food - 10
>>31549113let's send 2 west, 3 south, and 10 looking for edibles. Leave 5 home to play look out.
>>31549149I don't think we should send them all away from the hive. 2 is sufficient.
>>31549151This is good.
>>31549092The cave's three exits go south, southeast, and southwest, but the streams they produce all converge in the river bellow. The central cave that you have made your home is fifteen feet in diameter and is flooded with a shallow pond of red jelly, In the center is a large mass of mossy textured fungus that has made for a very comfortable throne for you, and is slightly glows slightly with a faint blue light.>>31549144Should you gain a large amount of the minerals that it feeds on, you believe you could grow more fungus to produce more jelly, however you are unsure of the nature of these minerals at the moment, and have no way to find more. Your thinker contemplates this, and feels that a survey of the area would permit him to make a more knowledgeable guess as to where to find more such minerals.
>>31549239In that case, lets have one of the workers staying at home take rock samples of the cave, let's try and figure out what we might be able to mine.
>>31549113current consensus>5 drones west>5 drones south>10 drones search the forest for foodplease give me 3 rolls. Highest of first three.
>>31549299You split up your drones and send them all out, sending the bulk of them into the jungle of giant mushrooms clouded in a fog of spores. The rest you split between south and west.As your drones move south, the river soon tapers into a stream of rainwater, and the rolling hills flatten out to a wide plain of thick moss. You see very little in the area apart from a large cluster of shapes in the distance. It is difficult to make them out in the rain, but they seem to be quite large in size, and there are a great many of them. They appear to still be some distance from your drones.West ward your workers follow the river. The area is thick with mud and the uneven terrain slows your workers as their claws become stuck several times. Eventually they reach what seems to be an endless plain of foamy, orange moss that pulsates rhythmically. The ground slants downward towards it, and at the edge you can see water seeping from under the moss, breaking it apart as shallow waves crash along the shore. The entire ocean has been covered by the stuff, it seems. In the forest your drones find all manner of living creatures, large and small. Every 'tree' is a massive mushroom or misshapen growth and the rain is no more than a trickle of water dripping from the solid canopy. The drones are not used to such an environment and their progress is slow. You are unsure if there is even such a thing as a fruit or vegetable on this world. As your drones make their way they detect the crunching of foliage, and the sound is getting closer rather quickly.

You think it may be distracted by its kill and use the opportunity to move away, but as you do so you notice a strange wound on the creature's tail. Your drones give it room, and as you fear it has found them it lets out a thunderous roar as steam flairs from a series of holes along its side. Two other burn marks are scattered on the ground, the dirt around the point of impact has become red-hot glass. One of the bi-peds is sitting against a tree, its bubble helmet has shattered and torn chunks of its face into strips. Its legs appear to have been gouged by something, and are set at odd angles. Both of its arms are held straight out, and are struggling to hold a small round object it its shaky grip.It screams, and as it does a bolt of lighting erupts from its small device, grazing the side of one of your workers. >>31554721Alrighty. Looking forward to next thread OP.
>>31554721Cool man. Glad to see you ended up doing the quest and all. Been hoping for one like this for a while. night.
>>31554725we have no vocal chords.aliens are highly unlikely to have co-evolved compatible telepathic antennae.
>>31554725You can only communicate with your drones via telepathy as far as you know, but you could develop other ways of communication.Take care everyone, I'm gonna get some sleep before work.
>>31554747>>31554755So maybe we could develop a drone that does have vocal chords and communicate through it. A diplomat-drone, essentially. If it's possible, it's probably a good idea to try to talk to these guys, find out what their intentions and such are. They're intelligent after all.
>>31554614I meant: Getting more of them.
>>31554782>A diplomat-droneno. no talking.for once, no diplomancing.we just eat this guy that was dying anyway, learn what we can from his corpse and his technology, and stick to the shadows.we are far too weak right now.we want to learn their intentions, we can send spies to listen in.
>>31554824If we could talk to him, assuming that he doesn't die during transport, we could learn far more, right now. If it's possible, why wouldn't you want to do that?
Maybe we could trade stuff to the humans for their lightning guns.Or take this one apart and grow biological versions in each of our drones.
>>31554878It might be prudent not to let them know where our cave is. They might try to attack us, or make us slaves.
>>31554923He's alone, and will be in our captivity. They don't have telepathy, so he won't be able to tell anyone anything. I don't understand what you're afraid of.
>>31554878a q&a session right before he dies would be productive yeah. in a perfect world, we would have an interrogator-drone available quickly.but how long does it take to lay and incubate a new Specialty drone? it might be more time than we have. we'll have to check.talking to dead men is cool, yeah. revealing our very vulnerable presence to entirely unevaluated threats isn't.
>>31554942>and will be in our captivity.and will be in our stomachs*
how can the whole world be noting but fungi?fungi can't produce energy on their own, they only feed on what's there.where's the actual source of energy on this planet?the start of the food chain? the equivalent of photosynthesizers?
>>31555007It's alien fungus. Just because it looks like a mushroom doesn't mean it is a mushroom.
>>31554942>What is a homing beacon.>What is landmarks he can remember.
>>31555125I for one don't mind killing him, but if we keep him alive, we don't have to be nice about it:-strip him of all clothing and weapons-cut off feet, maybe hands too-wait for him/her to stop screaming, THEN interrogate, bribing with clothes(that we let our thinker scan for tools) and food other than what we serve him(jello)
>>31555007I'd assume some of the fungi looking things are photosynthesizersThat or animals do it and the fungi eat themwould be a weird reversal
>>31554782So long as we're talking about wild new mutations, we might as well try to create some sort of parasite/infiltrator drone that we could slip inside him, before healing him and letting him toddle off home.
I for one am against taking it to the hive, we don't know these creatures don't have telepathy or the ability to follow a scent trail. I would be for just taking the thing's technology (the lightning generator) and the carnivore's body, but leave the biped uninjured to be found by its kin. They're clearly pack animals and that means the survivors would retaliate against violence. In fact, it may be best to take a roundabout route to the hive to discourage these creatures from finding it.
>>31556946Again, these things are clearly evolved from prey creatures and capable of violence. Arousing their fear seems unwise. Frankly, I don't see what's so fascinating about this species besides the fact that it seems non native. We can always collect the other one's bones if we want a DNA sample.
