This is a one-shot.=====It's raining. You hate the rain. You hate the way it seeps under your ill-fitting uniform, the way it settles on your skin. It's cold and uncomfortable. Numbing. It makes you want to sleep, and your exhaustion and the monotony of the post aren't helping. You're halfway through the midnight shelling. The staccato boom of artillery drowns out the snoring of Abbott beside you. You lean lazily on your las rifle, staring out at the muddy fields. In the brief flashes of fire and light, you pick out landmarks you've long since committed to memory. The dead, resilient tree one-hundred and fifty meters out. The pockmarked rock formation at two-hundred. The rusting frame of an Ork vehicle - design unknowable - at an uncomfortably close one-hundred and twenty.Once upon a time, you weren't so lax. You wouldn't stick your head out of the trench for more than a glance, for fear of a Gretchin getting a lucky shot. You wouldn't even consider keeping watch without camo-netting to conceal you. You would have your las rifle at the ready, body tensed for combat at any moment. But that was a long time ago. After months of little more than probing assaults, most of which didn't even reach the trench line, you're too tired for that. Now, you just want to go home. Back to your father's farm, living lazy.>Keep Watch, if the captain catches you slacking he'll have your head - and you don't even want to think about the Commissar>Sleep, nothing happens anyway>Wake up Abbot, tell him it's the 02:00 shelling and his watch started half an hour ago>Other
>>30020961Keep watch. Last thing we need is to be summarily executed in the second post.

>>30020961keep watch. For now.
>>30020961Looking forward to this.>Keep watch
>Keep watchYou let Abbott sleep. He and Atkinson are fresh to the squad, they'll adjust to your little slice of hell soon enough. No need to foist it on either of them. The shelling continues. You check your gear. You flak vest fits as well as it ever has, though the uniform is sodden. Your las rifle is covered in mud. You take a moment to clear the end of the barrel - you don't know how the damn thing works, but it's probably best that you keep the business end out of the dirt.Out in the muck, you spot an oddity. Shadows, where there were none before. Unfamiliar figures stretching across the expanse with long, dangerous points protruding from the figments.Your eyes trace the shadows to their silhouettes. The light is brief, and visibility is further hampered by the rain, but it looks like the greenskins are making another sortie.>Wake the squad, can't be too careful>Let them come closer, not much makes it across the scarred land - you'll wake the squad if it's serious enough

Better safe than sorry, or so your Da always said. You drive you shoulder into Abbott. The loss of balance jerks him awake, he just barely catches himself on the lip of the trench."The fuck, Marcus!"You grab his rifle and shove it into the boy's arms. "Greenskins. You go get Atkinson and Paul, I'll find Heinlein and the watchdog." You jog off, leaving a confused and terrified private standing in the dark.-----Heinlein is in the same place as always - hunkered over his fold-out table in the dugout, where he can read and do paperwork without worrying too much about rain. The commissar is against the far wall, wrapped in several layers of blankets and resting on that absurdly large pillow of his.Adalberht always was one for his comforts. The captain looks up at the sound of your boots slapping the drier packed earth. "Smith. It's your watch, if I'm not mistaken."You straighten up. "Yes sir," you answer, "Greenskins sighted. Still a ways out, but closing fast. Abbott is fetching Atkinson and MacDowel." By now, the commissar is awake, and looking none too happy about that fact.Heinlein nods. "Very well. I'll radio it in, though I'm sure the rest of the line is well aware by now. We'll meet you at the line in five."You take that as a dismissal and leave the dugout.----->Just a little too long, 2 posts>[1/2]
>>30021675Even a man who has nothing can still offer his life
>>30021825You find the other three members of your undermanned squad at the trench. Abbott nervousely gripping his rifle and readjusting the holster for his las pistol. Atkinson, the other rookie, has already affixed his bayonet - too eager for a bloody battle, that one.Paul, on the other hand, stands idle. He's the oldest man in the squad - older than the captain, even. The heavy flamer on his back is primed and ready and he knows it, no need to expend extra effort or attention making sure. His eyes are fixed on the oncoming tide. And a tide it is. Not like the probes of the last few months, a veritable sea of dark figures is approaching the line. The artillery thins them, but it's like blow sand from a beach. The thin, red foam sprays and settles on the oncoming waves of green. The rumble of feet and engines drowns out the sound of bursting shells, even. For the first time in a long time, you know terror.>[2/2]>Captain and commissar will be here momentarily, what do you do in the mean time

You do what any man would do, looking death in face. You pulled out two lho-sticks and motion to Paul. The large man looks at your offering and grins. He swings the flamer around to face you. You light the deathsticks on the pilot and hand one off before taking a deep, relaxing drag on your own. It's a good way to calm the nerves.Your two rookies aren't doing so well. Abbott looks like he's ready to piss himself, if he hasn't already. Atkinson is very nearly the opposite - he looks like he's seriously considering a one-man bayonet charge."Joey, sit your ass down. You couldn't hit a mob with a frag the way you're itching," you place one hand on Thomas' shoulder, "and you need to stop your shivering. Pray to the Emperor, and don't waste his ammo." You lean in, "when things get hairy, stay close. I'll see you through."He nods. It's a white lie - when the orks get close, everything goes to hell. But it's a reassuring one.Speaking of, you've got three spare batteries for your own lasgun on you, and another two for your pistol. The four frag grenades hanging from your belt finish off your gear which is of any use - though you've got a bayonet and a trench knife if things get too close. And, of course, your entrenchment tool. The commissar finally shows, in that absurd hat of his. He's got his bolt pistol in one hand, and the chainsword at his hip remains in easy reach. He casts an appraising glare over the four of you, lingering just a moment longer on Abbott. "Strength is the Emperor's gift," he intones, "let it bolster you in this hour. Trust in it, and it will see you this trial," he narrows his eyes, once more boring holes into the shaken rookie, "and should you squander that gift, I will see to it that you return it - personally."Captain Heinlein steps out of the darkness. "More harm than good, Adalberht."The commissar scoffs. The captain approaches the line. "Almost in range. Get ready to fire.">Roll 1d100 for shooting

"I see a sea of green filth trying to kill the Emperor-blessed men brave enough to stand and fight, or unlucky enough to not have martyred themselves yet."Cowed by the reminder, you follow along. It's easy enough between the two of you, the battle has reached its peak. Captain Heinlein leaps into cover behind the remains of a choppa and fires his plasma pistol. The plasma catches a fuel canister of one of the rear orks, and he vanishes in an inferno of howls and agony.Paul's less lucky. His flamer spews a think mist of fire before drizzling. The big man curses, you think you hear him utter some very heretical things about machine spirits.Jason catches a spout of flame to the face. He's dead before he hits the ground. Incensed at the loss of his last squadmate, Memphis pulls a frag grenade from his belt and lobs it - it's just wide, but the explosion ruptures one canister and blows the side open on another ork. The latter is still stubbornly moving. You dive under another spray, putting the upturned bed of the trukk between you and the xenos. They've been joined by a small band of gretchin. You count, and throw. The gout of propellant which narrowly misses your face is enough incentive to keep your head down, to resist the urge to check and see if you were on-target. You are Thomas. You are also shamed and reeking of urine. You can hear the battle of man and ork outside. Hear the explosions, the warcries. The death.Joseph told you to go with the Captain, but you couldn't. You wanted to, but you couldn't. They would call you a coward for hiding, but what good would one more corpse be on the field? What good would one more soldier be, one who couldn't even shoot straight? So you hid. The dugout was the safest place you could think of with orks on one side and Commissars on the other. Though, right now you were just prolonging a sure death. As horrible as it was, you could only hope that the rest of your squad died - that you could claim to be the sole survivor, with no one to give testament to your cowardice.Except Joseph... he would lie for you. Something about the pillow calls you to it. Perhaps it's the desire to hold or be held, perhaps it's the Commissar's lingering scent of authority and safety. Perhaps it's the full-length print of an Adeptas Sororitas on the case. You want it. You pull it close and snuggle into its folds. It feels soft and comfortable, like a mother's bosom. Rolled 25, 91 = 116>50, 19, 43>5, 29, 74You don't know if you can dissuade the Captain from reporting this, but you don't want anyone getting shot just now.The Adelberht is dead, Tommy. Come out.He looks at you with trust. He clutches the pillow.He... leaves it behind/holds it tighter. You don't have time to debate this with the captain. He's a good man, but you don't think he's going to let this go - a man who runs puts the life of every soldier in his squad on the line. But you don't want to see Thomas gunned down in a hole like a dog."Tommy," you say, "it's alright. We can talk about this. Adelberht's dead, it's possible to have a discussion without holding guns to eachother's heads."The captain's scowl deepens, but he nods after a moment. "I'm willing to talk. But you've got to stand down first, boy."Thomas looks at you. For a moment, you think he's coming around. He lowers his las pistol -- and then tosses the pillow at Heinlein. He curses and fires his plasma, boiling a hole through the material. The scorched cushion spins and falls. The captain's shot went wide, and Thomas has dive behind the large vox-box use to radio command. You draw your bolt pistol.>[1/2]>Just a hair too long for one post again
>>30030984Thomas lets loose on Heinlein. In his panic, they fly wide and catch Paul instead. Once in the shoulder, the other in the neck. He falls to his knees and futily attempts to staunch the blood. You rack the slide.Heinlein's retaliatory fire almost melts away your friend's cover, but doesn't score a direct hit.Thomas pulls the trigger again and gets nothing. He looks at you. Regret and betrayal. A hint of anger, at you or himself you'll never know. He pulls out a frag grenade. You line up your sights. He pull the pin, and cocks his arm.You fire. The bolt slams in to his forhead. You watch him go cross-eyed, a moment between moments. The shell detonated, shearing the top of his skull off. You don't have time to think about what you just did; to think about the fact that you just killed your childhood friend. You grab Heinlein by the arm and pull him out of the dugout just in time to evade the blast.>[2/2]>Writing a follow-up post for the fucking pillow. >I'll spoiler it, those of you not should know that this is basically the end and that Heinlein and Joseph have a lot of explaining to do about why the fuck their dugout blew up and two men died -after- the battle had moved on. But it's late, I intended to end this one-shot a while ago, and I don't want to drag this on so far into the night that it becomes shit.
>>30031041>Those of you not interested in the sillyness that is the pillow*
>>30031041Oh man, what the fuck Thomas. T_T
>>30031041>>30031060Slaanesh is displeased
>>30031041HA! SUCK IT, HERETICS! GLORY TO THE IMPERIUM, PRAISE BE TO THE EMPRAH
>>30031041Good riddance. One less coward taints the hammer of the emperor.
>>30031041Paul lays gasping. His neck is blown open, though that's the least of his worries now. He's also been pockmarked and scarred by a frag grenade, and his entire front is sheathed in blood.Worse, Robert and the rookie have left him for dead. Understandable - you wouldn't know he was still alive, just looking at him.A chill settles in his bones, entirely unrelated to the weather. His eyes are drawn inexorably to the pillow. It's in worse shape than he is. But somehow, its proximity comforts him. It says to him, "if you could just hold me, everything would be a little bit better."Paul is not a smart man. His is not a great man. But he is the Emperor's man, and he knows that when furniture speaks to you, something just isn't right. His last act is to spit on that pillow.Somewhere nearby by, Psyker doubles over in pain, having felt a psychic scream of injured pride rend the Warp.YOUR DAMN PILLOW.
>>30031060>>30031041Props to you, it was a really good quest OP for a one-shot.Please turn it into a regular thing, this was awesome.
>>30031186HAHAHA 12/10 OP that was beyond satisfactory, thanks for putting up with our nonsense
>>30031186PAULA REAL MAN OF THE EMPEROROLLANIUS FUCKING PIUS REINCARNATED.
>>30031197agreed, it was enjoyableneeds a bit more lethality but i mean, dice, what are you gonna do
>>3003118610/10 it was okayJokes aside, amazing thread OP. Thanks.
>>30031233What I intended to do:You play one Guardsman at a time, and inevitably die horribly to xenos. First the regular squad members, then the captain, and finally the commissar. What happened:/tg/ did poorly enough to get Marcus killed, but then Thomas turned out to be a fucking badass or something and I couldn't justify killing him on 80+ rolls. So I rolled with it.
>>30031186Thanks for the awesome one-shot.
Man, I fucking loved this. I usually hate quests, but there's something so neat and cool about a really well-done one shot.
>>30031257the "what happened" is almost always more interesting than the "what i intended" Im glad you stuck it out to the end
>>30031257The most important lesson about quests is that shit never works out for the writer.
>>30031257i dont even normally go for quest thread shit but i saw >expendable guardsmen and what can i say, i love me some dead 'umiesyou did good, thomas did good, xenos were purged and heretics put down
Thank you guys for being awesome players, by the way. It really helps relieve stress when I can see that the players are enjoying it.As long as the last seven hours have felt, this was a surprising amount of fun. Would do again.Thread is archived.
Rolled 73>>30031338Holy shit it's been that long. Wow.Thanks for this OP. Good shit.
>>30031338Mad props, OP. Sorry for derailing your narrative over a pillow and a hat, but PCs gonna PC.
10/10 OP, this should be archived
>>30031338Brilliant quest OP, you've been keeping me entertained all day.
10/10, the way quests should be.
