Monsterpocalypse is pretty grimdark. Of the six factions, only one is interested in protecting humanity- G.U.A.R.D.. Another is incredibly morally ambiguous, verging one evil, The Shadowsun Syndicate. All the others- Terrasaurs, Martian Menace, Lords of Cthul and Planet Eaters, only seem to want to smash, devour, corrupt or enslave humanity, as the case may be.
    >> Anonymous 10/13/08(Mon)08:00 No.2794294
Just finished reading the rules. I can't really find anything wrong with it.
    >> Anonymous 10/13/08(Mon)08:05 No.2794315
Well, only the Lords of Ctul are REALLY evil. The Planet Eaters just want to eat stuff, without much malice really(think Galactus). Terrasaurs are pretty similiar, they just want to eat nuclear waste and stuff. The Martians want resources because their own stuff is depleted. Other than that, the motives and such of the factions aren't really detailed. Unlike WH40K, where it's war for war's sake, the factions have real motivations, it's just that great carnage and destruction is caused by fulfilling them.

Meh, that was a long time ago and didn't have a metric fuckton of dice, a play mat and miniatures in it. I have no problem buying two starters so I have enough stuff at my house for a quick pick up game.

Except that I now feel a bit embarassed about owning a "play mat".

I decided to go with Planet Eaters since that what I got the most of in my Starter + 4 Unit Boosters.
    >> Anonymous 10/13/08(Mon)14:46 No.2795687

    Primarily Planet Eaters here.

Rogzor + Belchers + Elite Belchers + Crawler. My units can actually do about as much heavy lifting as my monster at that point, which is pretty lol.

Especially since I have a Bank Headquarters for the belchers to hold.
    >> Anonymous 10/13/08(Mon)15:27 No.2795919
So what is the deal with this game. I get that it's a miniatures game but other than that have yet to see an explanation.
    >> Anonymous 10/13/08(Mon)15:28 No.2795925

I got a pretty decent starting PE army, including Gorghadra, 2 Explodohawks, 3 Belchers, 3 Elite Belchers, 3 Destructomites and 3 Elite Destructomites. I'm looking for more Explodohawks (those things are DANGEROUS, strong kamikaze units) and some Crawlers (they look like the kind of units meant to hold buildings and points).

If I look into collecting a second side, I'm thinking Terrasaurs, since they look pretty neat.
    >> Anonymous 10/13/08(Mon)15:31 No.2795939

It's a fairly straightforward grid-based miniatures games. Each player has one monster and up to 15 units and each seek to kill the other's monster.

I got my ass beat by Planeteaters today. Their monsters can just put so much pounding into their effects.

I have to say that this little game has a lot more to it than a simple shiny game should. It looks kinda kiddy and bright, but its a lot of fun.

My only complaint is that there should be an intro set for 39.99$ that had enough for two people.
    >> Anonymous 10/14/08(Tue)05:17 No.2800877
Shadow Sun monsters are a mix of Ultramen and Riders.

The only size changing Rider is J. Ultraman vs. Kamen Rider shows Rider 1 growing in size, but its status as canon is questionable.

Kamen Rider Black was the Black Sun, his brother/enemy was the Shadow Moon.

    >> Anonymous 10/14/08(Tue)10:28 No.2801700
They already kind of used the Greenpeace Extremist angle with the Terrasaurs. The fluff has them being followed around by activists with AK-47s, but you are right. We need giant mantises!
    >> Anonymous 10/14/08(Tue)10:34 No.2801720
That's my point. I expected the activists to be the units of the faction, but they aren't. It's only natural there's an extension to their agenda that has them on the field, considering the fluff, but we'll see.

    He's trolling.

They only really have unit production with the Ares, and Gorghadra (of the planet eaters) has RIDICULOUS power gain.

'Oh, you hit me? I gain a power die during your turn.'
'Oh, you hit one of my units? I gain a power die during your turn.'
'Oh, you hit three of my units? I gain 3 power dice during your turn.'

Shit stacks up fast. Until they start crushing your units, anyway.

That said, I'm the guy who talked about Rogzor and Belchers earlier, and I also have a decent-sized set of martians. Deimos-9 is pretty damned cool on the mobility front, giving all of the little attack Saucers hit and run is pretty obscene. And unlike a lot of monsters, he doesn't STOP sharing in his hyper form.

    >> Anonymous 10/14/08(Tue)13:39 No.2802479

Every unit booster comes with a statted-out building, and a wreckage tile to replace it when it inevitably gets smashed.

Aside from making the play mat look nicer, they actually have a lot of mechanics to go with them. You can generate power dice with it if you have 3 or more units adjacent to it (and some buildings have other abilities, too), they provide cover to non-flying units, your monster can eat them in melee for a quick power boost, or you can chuck the enemy monster into it for MASSIVE DAMAGE.

Played two games so far using both Guard Robots.

First match was Defender X vs Terra Khan, went hyper form almost immediately into the match and started beating the shit out of his forces. Mega Defender X is rather powerful with his explosive/pushback blast attacks and pretty competent in melee too. Tank forces proved less effective that I would've preferred, but thats my fault for grouping them so tightly, at one point one of his spitter minions with the explosive attack blew away 4 tanks and a command truck in one attack. I still won in the end though.

Second match was Sky Sentinel vs Zor-Raiden. I like how Sky Sentinel plays, he turns the Rocket Choppers into dangerous little buggers, between Elite Rocket Choppers leadership bonus, spotter bonus, and Sky Sentinel's wingcommander bonus, a group of 2 regular and 1 elite rocket chopper can be a serious through to even a heavily armored monster. Spent most of the game playing keep away from Zor-Raiden while pelting him with blast attacks (and Sky Sentinel can make two blasts when in hyper form) while also damaging him with choppers. Another win for GUARD, though he managed to defeat my hyper form this time.

In both matches I stayed on my side of the map and made heavy use of repair trucks to keep the Robot's health up while wearing my opponent down. I like how GUARD plays. Rocket fists FTW.

Defender X is a good beatdown monster IMO and Sky Sentinal is great at attrition warfare and chopper pack attacks.

People seem to be all up on judging the factions by how much beatdown the monsters can do, but the guard units are goddamned absurd with the right robot supporting them (shooting tanks becomes unreasonable with Defender X in play, Rocket Choppers become unholy terrors with Sky Sentinel).

You do, Sky Sentinel + Chopper is pure sex.

Assuming they got an elite chopper in range to give his bonus, each chopper is rolling up to two white dice and two blue dice, with the enemy at -1 defense if a chopper is within two space of them. Throw in a command truck for another +1 B die to the combine attack and you've got a recipe for chopper raep. At the end of the match I had Zor-Raiden surrounded by 6 choppers (2 elite) and a command truck, I split them into two different combined attacks and finished him off that way.

With Sky Sentinel its a real damned if you do, damned if you don't. You can go after Sentinel, in which case choppers pick you apart, or go after the choppers, in which case Sky Sentinel (who can make blast attacks 7 squares out!) snipes at you while camping a repair truck fixing any damage you might've done.

Also, if you can spare units, try to secure a radar dish, giving all your units +2 blast range (except for units already with radar, aka Sky Sentinel/Command truck and anyone within 2 spaces of them).

Sky Sentinel is the man, though I'll still use Defender X too, gotta love explosive, knock back back rocket fists for severe property damage.

Until you fight Cthugrosh and he just uses Fling to send the choppers into Defender X, getting free power dice from crushing a the units. He'll probably start with the command truck, and since Fling has long range he'll no doubt be able to send it into Defender X and essentially gets two attacks, one that will almost assuredly hit and kill the unit and then Trigger Fling to use the Dice in Play against Defender X for added damage. Oh, and this is via Blast, so he doesn't have to be near either unit to do it.
    >> Anonymous 10/14/08(Tue)15:41 No.2802918

I'm not claiming its an invincible strategy, and its Sky Sentinel, not Defender X.

Haven't fought Cthul guys yet, by fling do you mean the standard power attack "Swat" or is it something special they have?

Anyways, unless you've got a LOT of power dice to blow back-to-back monster activations tend to be rather impractical.

It's a Trigger Power. Anytime Cthugrosh uses his Blast he can then Fling the unit he hit up to 5 spaces (long range) and attack another figure of structure with all his dice in play.
    >> Anonymous 10/14/08(Tue)15:46 No.2802932

    >Haven't fought Cthul guys yet, by fling do you mean the standard power attack "Swat" or is it something special they have?

Cthurgosh (and the taskmaster unit) have 'fling' attached to their ranged (melee in the taskmaster's case) attacks. If they hit a unit with it, they choose a figure within 5 spaces of that unit and make an attack against it with dice in play.

    It can get pretty brutal.

    >yways, unless you've got a LOT of power dice to blow back-to-back monster activations tend to be rather impractical.

Actually, Back-to-back monster activations tend to be game-changing. You DO need the dice for it, but some monsters are great for it.

Hell, I pulled off three consuctive monster activations with Gorghadra, and that included needing to spend dice to step in order to catch up to the enemy monster. But then, Gorghadra is so good at farming up power dice that I wouldn't really call 3 consecutive activations something most people would be able to look forward to.

Terrasaur player here! Gonna try a synopsis of faction playstyles; here we go!

The Shadowsun Syndicate: Ultraman Business Ninjas. All about speed, stealth, and then hitting that fucker hard, as far as I can tell. Mini-ninjas and jets are tough, and the cars can drag around shadow gates, giving you more stealth and teleports [including Skyscrapers, be sure to grab some!]. Not to great at control, though.

The Martian Menace: Various martian invader archetypes. All flying, all shooting. They love farming power dice, having vanguards harass for more dice, hunters pick off important units, and saucers/power pods supporting/controlling. Be sure to grab a TV network for propaganda! Not sure on the weakness, flying can be tough to deal with, but I guess choosing between defense and offense, as well as keeping your saucers and pods safe.

Planet Eaters: Heard alot about them in this thread, alot of expendable, but powerful, units, and a big focus on the monster, who will often easily gain tons of power dice simply through attrition, and power up his units.
    >> Anonymous 10/14/08(Tue)17:47 No.2803550
GUARD: The basic human defending giant robots. Big focus on ranged attacks, already a good breakdown of their basic strategey in this thread!

Lords of Cthul: Alot of focus on special abilities, and doing things your foe won't expect . . . summoning, healing, throwing, flinging, flying, putting out fires, sacrificing units etc. Not the greatest stats, though, though Hyper Cthugrosh is pretty tough.

Terrasaurs: If you've played Warmachine, think Khador. Pretty slow, but equally tough in melee or defense. Monster alphas enjoy teamwork with the smaller lizards, while the hyper/megas usually use their power-up to focus on a specific brand of monster beatdown. Units include a basic tough-statted brawler; a defensive point-holder; fast, jumping, flanking lizards [great supporting raptors]; and a rare ranged-support unit-clearing lizard.

Anything to add? Great, fun, simple game, finishing off a close match by body-slamming Cthugrosh into a burning building felt great, man!

So I won Mega Cthulugosh over the weakened when I played in a launch tourny. Luckily I had a a lot of mini's from when I went off to Gencon indy to make a decent army.

The main weakness of a Cthulu army is that you really need to keep your monster close to your units. Cthulugosh needs them nearby to sacrifice to get health back (because DEF 5 means everyone can hit you easily) while Yaseth needs those units attacking the enemy monster to get him health back.

Therefore, if you can get the first blow in and then keep the fight on your side of the table (or claim the mid-table spawn points) then you should be fine. Basically all my opponents found it really disheartening to see my monster getting a health back a turn while there monster was just eaten away.

Of course, I fear fighting SSS because they are damn ninja's that can pull off power attacks easily along with getting lots of power dice quickly. I know the first thing they will do is do two turns in a row and throw my monster across the board and keep him on there side while in the mean time his Shinobi's or Sun Fighters keep the ass raping going.

Shadowsun is the Eva faction, (though it also refers to a number of other anime and giant-robot shows like Kamen Rider).

I REALLY want to get into this game, but the complete lack of ability to pre-purchase into certain armies scares me off. Right now, the only one I want is Shadowsun, and if I can't get that I only end up with 1-2 other people who are similarly only interested in one of the factions each.
    >> Anonymous 10/15/08(Wed)03:02 No.2806172

It's kind of like Mage Knight and other similar minis games, in that the contents of the box tend to be random, forcing you to buy more and trade with other players.

What I suggest is whatever you get the most out in your Starter + few Boosters, go with that army first. I did so with Planet Eaters and traded the Area Mothership I got in my Starter for Gorghadra.
    >> Anonymous 10/15/08(Wed)03:03 No.2806176
The miniatures look horrible, and the booster system is stupid, but I like the sound of a lot of the mechanics. Maybe I'll give it a shot.

Can we get more summaries of the play styles of the various sides? I know a few people did them, but this early in a game's life I wouldn't trust the voice of just one person.
    >> Anonymous 10/15/08(Wed)03:26 No.2806280

I can provide the jist of the Planet Eaters side, but that's it.

Planet Eaters have fast units (6 spaces with Explodohawks and Destructomites) but all have paltry defense values. Explodohawks are kamikaze units with one of the strongest attacks in the game. Belchers are ranged units capable of reaching a good length and ignore cover bonuses. Crawlers are designed to hold onto points with better defense, but can't attack and has a double-edged sword of crushing all units around it when it dies. Your best bet, overall, is move in quickly with your Explodohawks and Destructomites and do the best you can in brawl attacks.

For the monsters, Gorghadra is a brawling master that, in his first form, gives all of your PE figures the ability to gain Power dice when hit, making PE one of the fastest Power dice generators in the game. Rogzor is the opposite, a ranged attack master, that works well with Belchers as all of the blast attacks gain Explosive and can cover 3x3 areas and potentially wiping out multiple units.

    for how Cthulu plays

Planet Eaters are just about doing gaining lots of power dice quickly through destruction. If you take Gorga then whenever your monster or a unit of yours is hit, you gain a power dice. Gorga also has a shit-ton of health so this ability is going to stay a long time and just annoy your opponent. When Gorga goes to Hyper form, he switches from high health to low health but gains high DEF. However, all his attacks do MASSIVE damage. If your units have already put 1 damage on the enemy monster, then Gorga can easily kill them off with one power attack. Heck, you could even get lucky and have Gorga throw them into two fiery buildings and that would kill any monster out there except another Gorga at full health.

Rogzor goes a slightly different route. He gives all your units explosive attacks that get get bonus damage. Combine this with your Range attack units already ignoring cover and that other units of yours lower the DEF of the enemy, and you will find that your army will wreck everything within range. Your units can easily put 2 damage on most monsters a turn (this is good) or just shred any enemy units with range to give yourself some power dice.

All in all, Planet Eaters just operate like a blunt object. You can throw in your Crawlers or Destructomites to lower the DEF of the enemy and make it even easier for you to kill the enemy.

The disadvantage of this army is that the Monsters have low DEF with no way of healing. Therefore you HAVE to kill enemy units before they plink away his health while also doing denying your opponent Power dice so he can't do a bunch of monster activations in a row.

You may find your faction lacking in certain things and thus want to compliment it. For example, SSS lacks a ranged punch while Martians lack units that can defend objectives well.

I like to use a Brontox with my Martians because it allows me to spawn other Terrasaur models for only one action dice. I can only do this once an activation, but it is a nice way to set up a little camp of Terrasaurs to protect some buildings while my fast little martians fly off to cause chaos.

So you don't mind the initial extra cost for bringing in a non-agenda aligned unit. Seems like that would set you back for at least a turn while you spawn units that cost more than they should. And against a quick hit opponent like GUARD or a power player like PE that just seems like a bad idea.
    >> Anonymous 10/16/08(Thu)00:42 No.2812830
Just do it first turn when it doesn't matter. For 4 Action dice I can bring in the Brontox and a Spikadon. That seems like a bargain to me. Of course, once the Brontox dies then I really have to weigh the options of brining him back (if I'm holding an Apartment complex then it isn't much of an issue).

In the end, I tend to send up the opposite direction of the rest of my army. Him and his buddies go and secure a forward negative zone and a forward spawn point for me. Sure, if the enemy wants to redirect towards them that is fine. They still have to deal with all my flying saucers and such.
