What the shit is up with this game? Did people actually play it?The world of Glorantha is kind of interesting a little bit. But seriously? What the hell?
>>27607884Yeah, people played it. What about it?Also Glorantha is the best setting ever m8, I'll fight you.
>>27607927Why would they play that instead of a better game like DnD.And, while it has some good bits, Glorantha just tries to hard to be different. Really elves are plants? Ducks? Dragon things that are "lol so randumb!"
>>27607964This has to be an Uz thread.
>>27607996I can feel the cold grasp of Kyger Litor, yes.
>>27607996Uz are the trolls right?See they are OK. Simple society that eats people. Basically they are Orcs.
Glorantha has probably the best treatment of magic and religion I've ever seen in a fantasy game that wasn't specifically focused on them.
>>27607964You don't fuck with the ducks. I used to play one. For some reason we had a bunch of runequest books and we started with those. That was like 10 years ago.
>>27608019If you want to play D&D, play D&D. Runequest isn't D&D.
>>27608009But I am serious. It feels like it is just different to be different.>>27608027Like what? Herp derp we stronk barbarians! Or Hohoho! Silly barbarians Romans are king now.
>>27608050>But I am seriousThen you're retarded.
Ducks are fucking retarded, but most everything else is pretty cool. As far as mechanics go, I quite like the skill system that RQ uses, though I do think that some of the shit they stack on top makes things more complicated than it needs to be.
>>27608019>Simple society that eats people. Basically they are Orcs.Oh no, no. Thay aren't simple and they aren't orcs. The Uz are actually one of the best takes I've seen on the token monstrous and brutish race.See, basically the Uz are total bros. They had their own little paradise down in the underworld and everything was good. And then Orlanth fucked everything up. Again.
>>27608043Look at >>27608036 how are those not Orcs?
God forbid OP ever looks at Earthdawn. Or Reign. Or basically any non-D&D fantasy game.
>>27608065>I can't think up an argument>I know! I will call him retarded, then everyone will see how smart I am!
>>27607964>Talkin shit about the DucksWHAT YOU DOIN BRO THEY TIGHT WITH HUMAKT THEY GONNA REK YO SHIT!
>>27608082I dunno. Are orcs organized into a complex matriarchal society of survivors stuggling to unfuck their entire race after getting dicked over by an evil god? Does the same society struggle with its own internal contradictions and the fact that they are currently somewhere they were never meant to be? Do orc traders wear kickass shades and act like total bros?
>>27608101>that feel when a Humakti Deathduck kept killing my top tier combat guys in KoDPSrsly what the fuck.
>>27608101Please tell me you can play a medieval Darkwing Duck in Runequest. Please.
>>27608138WELL THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T PISS OFF THE HUMAKTI DEATHDUCKS NOW INNIT?
>>27608151That shouldn't be very difficult.
>>27608151Hell yes you can play a fucking duck. And nobody fucks with the ducks.
>>27607964Elves were vegetables and fruit even in my old group homebrew setting. I learned something today, wow
>>27608134So it is an entire race of animu special snowflakes? Shit and I thought they were cool.
Do the gamebooks focus on the Orlanthi like KoDP does? What other groups are there in Glorantha?
>>27608211See? This is what I am talking about. People only like the setting because they liked that video game.
>>27608164>>27608190Okay, this is the greatest thing ever. I'm tempted to make a Duck Tales campaign now.
>>27608233Sorry that I am not 13 and like special brooding people anymore?
>>27608237Who cares, the vidya owned and the setting looks like it owns.
>>27608237The vidya game came out in 1999. Glorantha has been around since the 70s.2/10, got a reply at least.
>>27608201I think we should consider just reporting and ignoring at this point.
>>27608240Just don't end up in Duck Jail.
>>27608246When did anybody say anything about brooding?
>>27608274don't answer him. Just report him, ignore him, and let him rot.
>>27608257>>27608262>>27608274You could just ignore it and talk about Glorantha. Reporting won't do anything, he's entitled to not like the setting.
>>27608240That shouldn't be very hard. Mongoose Runequest 2 has a sourcebook for the ducks. Also HeroQuest 2 has some really, really kickass setting books for Glorantha.
>>27608290when people start intentionally misusing words like "animu special snowflake", they're pretty obvious trolls that the janitors tend to clean up if they're brought to their attention.
Is it weird that I browse /tg/ for at least four years and this is the first time I've heard of this game?
>>27608311Not that weird. Surprised you didn't see anything on KoDP though.>>27608310If you say so, not in my experience though.
>>27607884>Did people actually play it?it's been the reason i never got into D&D for over two decades now. thank you basic roleplaying. to be fair it's been some swedish reimaginations of the concept and setting along with the same of gamma world, but still with basic roleplaying attached to it.RQ and BRP, later Stormbringer and most of all Call of Cthulhu, showed what RPGaming was really about (course there was also Traveller befor that).
>>27608211The HeroQuest 2 ones do focus on the Orlanthi so far. As for other groups there are a whole goddamn lot, far too many to describe accurately in a sigle post. I could make a quick summary if you like, though.
>>27608330>being able to play a wide variety of games with, presumably, real and not imaginary peopleI wish I could eat your heart and steal your life.
>>27608336That would be great, if you could. So is it expected PCs will generally be Orlanthi?
>>27608301I'd suggest you'd use the ruleset from RQ6 though. I'm pretty sure most RQ2 stuff can be used as-is from the old system, but you get some updated combat and all that.
>>27608240>Okay, this is the greatest thing ever. I'm tempted to make a Duck Tales campaign now.Have at. Sorry I intended to post a pdf but it is 8.92MB and the max size is 8MB, do you know a good free no-account hosting site? Can we ignore the troll and have a Glorantha thread?
What's the different between this and the Heroquest RPG?
>>27608190Tell me, is it ever possible for that death-duck to show up and want to fight one of your guys, and for you to actually win?
>>27608343no need for that, all you had to do was grow up in sweden during the 80s and on.
>>27608311>Is it weird that I browse /tg/ for at least four years and this is the first time I've heard of this game?Kind of I create threads for it some of the time. Moreso around the time the Guide to Glorantha was being kickstarted.
>>27608366>living in sweden>instead of the post-apocalyptic cyber dystopia of north americaAgain, I wish I could eat your heart and steal your life.
>>27608365Yes. I don't know how though because at least one of my guys he killed had as high a combat skill as it is possible to have in the game.
>>27608363>What's the different between this and the Heroquest RPG?A lot. They are completely different systems.Runequest is based on (well really lead to but still closely related) BRP so it is percentile based.Heroquest 2 is based on d20roll vs d20roll.
>>27608376I would prefer Norway, but Sweden would be nice too. So in short, can I have half the heart?
Broos. Like the Hef before the Hef.
>>27608413If you eat half the heart, that means we'll probably wind up somewhere like britain instead of glorious sweden or norway.Well, Still better than here.
>>27608420Not the best piece of art to promote a game, I suspect.
>>27608425I dunno. Most if Britain is as bad (England), or like Detroit (Scottland), or like Kansas (Wales).
>>27608311weird, no. sad, yes, very. it's a shame RQ aint a big name (outside of places like scandinavia that mostly know it from their own versions of it and its influence on their RPGaming market).then again its heavy on history, culture and emulating the setting with its system and trusting the GM to make the interesting choises for an entertaining time for everyone involved, instead of system balance through forced class progression and obsessive resource equations (distrust of DM and players alike).
>>27608420As much as I hate to sound like Social Justice Warrior. Broos are kind of distasteful if you are squeemish about rape.
>>27608459>it's a shame RQ aint a big nameWhy is this anyway? Is is really just bad handling from publishers? Did Avalon Hill actually kill it?
>>27608394alot of later BRP inspired games (atleast here) just divided that % by five and used a d20 (or pools of open d6s) as well (still very much BRP games though).
>>27608477I thought they were distasteful because those they rape EXPLODE INTO BROOS?Basically a goddamn xenomorph outbreak.
>>27608452>like Detroit (Scotland)At least spell it right if you're going to be horrendously wrong about it.
>>27608346>So is it expected PCs will generally be Orlanthi? The Orlanthi are the most fleshed out and popular, yeah. You don't have to be one, though. As for other cultures, we have the Lunar Empire. They worship the Goddess of the Red Moon, who's a bit of a newcomer and also a foe of Orlanth. Other than that they're an expansionist empire who practise a syncretistic and tolerant religion (as long as you don't worship Orlanth that is) and are very progessive and flexible culturally. Unfortunately their goddess also has links to Chaos, which is generally regarded as A Bad Thing, Chaos being the formless nonbeing that Glorantha floats around in like an oversized Sno Globe. Chaos doesn't like this very much, and wuld prefer if that pesky little world would just dissolve into the ur-muck already. The Lunars themselves consider this an unfortunate necessity in order to control Chaos and prevent it from spreafing harm, while the Orlanthi consider this a sure sign that all Lunars are Chaos-worshipping scum who should be killed on sight. This has led to conflict. This is also a pretty dumbed down version that doesn't go into the theological side of things, which is pretty interesting in its own right.
>>27608311Kind of weird. It's one of D&D's most famous competitors, and gets brought up in passing when we talk about Chaosium's Basic Role Playing system pretty often. I've seen it shared quite a bit, as well.
>>27608490I don't know about other people, but for me it's much too inflexible a setting. What happens if a player wants to be (X) race? It's generally not gonna be able to happen.
>>27608425The charm wears off quickly, I assure you. It's a nice enough place, but incredibly vacuous, and the populated areas are rapidly turning into Little Somolia.I've found that almost every problem that can be found with living in America can be solved by moving further West, and then further North as the problems persist.
>>27608211Well, there's quite a bit of other cultures other than the Orlanthi.Okay, this is an old map of the most well known continent. Pick a place name, and I can rant about them.
>>27608561I'm already way in the west AND north. Still, unemployment and hobos everywhere.
>>27608490>Why is this anyway?I don't know. I'm not an American so I can't quite say why it never got big there. Obviously it's huge here, atleast in the way it's inspired the Swedish RPGs (almost every one coming directly or indirectly from RQ and the other BRP related settings and the system), even if maybe the more resent generations don't know RQ by name (atleast the know the local BRP games like Trudvang, Mutant Undergångens Arvtagare, Kult, Eon, Western and so on and on and on).
>>27608535>What happens if a player wants to be (X) race? But I have heard stories with being having (not all at once mind you)(I can never remember how to spell the races so forgive me)MostaliAldreyemiDucksDragonnewtsUzOrlanthiLunarPraxanThose people from the West I forget what they are calledThe tall athletic people from the South
>>27608490Well, there is 6e, but generally things have changed in the 70 years, and an old system won't get the attention it deserves.>>27608535Well, pretty much every race has outliers who'll work with others. Trolls are pretty much the most well written about culture after the Orlanthi.
>>27608490Avalon Hill were a bunch of dumbasses and fucked up, yeah. They made some bullshit fantasy earth setting and cranked out some really, really fucking dumb supplements. As a result nobody bought the new stuff, because why would you when the Glorantha content was so much superior?
>>27608561I want to live further North. Wisconsin is not far enough.>tfw not being able to move to AlaskaIt is like the equator and I had a bad breakup.
>>27608563>Genert's DesertNot a great name.
>>27608598And, to be honest, that's quite a small racelist.
>>27608535You have like, five really fleshed out human cultures to choose from as well as all the nonhuman races. Your GM just has to be a bit flexible.
>>27608645Compared toHumanElfDwarfHalf-ElfHalf-OrcHalflingBoth have 6 (counting all humans as one race since other settings also have multiple cultures).
>>27608598Almost right, just the spelling of Aldryami was off.The Westerners tend to be called Malkioni. The tall athletic people are the Agimori Men-and-a-half. A race of demigods from the southlands, who moved to prax in the age of gods. Most Agimori arn't as tall and powerful as them, such as this Pithdaran wizard, who wears elevated shoes and a tall hat to reach the ritual height required for his magics.
>>27608581Well you can't go too far north, or you end up in Oregon, which is terrible.Try Silicon Valley. San Jose is pretty solid if you get along well with Koreans.
>>27608671You were going by "I've heard these races used". In D&D I've heard all those used, AND: Dragons. Lamia. Driders. Mind flayers. Dryads. Gnolls. Goblins. Orcs. Kobolds. Awakened slime cubes.I could keep listing.
>>27608684>this Pithdaran wizard, who wears elevated shoes and a tall hat to reach the ritual height required for his magics.Just let me reiterate how much I love Glorantha here.
>>27608684I love that guy's expression. He's all like "Man, us brothers didn't cross no damn sea just to put up with these crazy-ass crackas".
>>27608645>Needing more then one race.RPGs are dead. The Cancer that is D@D killed it. No originality anymore and any originality gets compared to the worst D@D edition which kills any new rpgs that are interesting.
>>27608728You have made this picture go from "Pretty sweet" to "Best picture every"Thank you.
>>27608744>D@DWhy do crazy people invariably talk like crazy people?
>>27608477Broos are distasteful because they KILL MY FUCKING COWS and then I have to KILL MORE OF MY COWS to make sure they don't spawn MORE FUCKING BROOS.BY UROX, I HATE BROOS SO FUCKING MUCH.
>>27608768because he's a crazy person.
>>27608716I'm pretty sure that RQ has a shitton of races that you could use if you really wanted to. Plus the fact that there are, like four kinds of Aldryami and ten different kinds of Mostali and shit like that.
>>27608630Places get weird names in all languages. That one tends to be known simply as "The Wasteland", because it covers a huge amount of area. It used to be the most fertile part of the continent, before the Gods' War.
>>27608771Anon, WHY HAVEN'T YOU JOINED THE STORM BULLS YET!?FUCK CHAOS! LET US GO KILL SOME BROOS!
>>27608535>>27608645WHFRP has even less of choise in that department and it's been a popular game for ages. It's 2nd edition was the third most popular RPG line at its time (after D&D and WoD).I really don't see that has anything to do with it.
>>27608785but can you play them? I have quite literally never heard of ANY runequest story outside the more ordinary races.
>>27608804>I don't know about other people, but for meThat's what it has to do with it, Mr. reading comprehension.
>>27608744>RPGs are dead.Only in the US. But yes the D&D obsession has ruined generations of RPGamers (though some survive and pulls through).
>>27608818Considering how everything is built, you could play any race. Add to that the fact that most monsters, as I recall, were intelligent and a lot had at least pseudo-societies. Yes.Hell even the Broo the "RAPE EVERYTHING FOR CHAOS" have myths.
>>27608818Yeah, why wouldn't you? The system is classless, and if there aren't any rules for obscure race (x) in the nearly 40 years of published material, it's pretty easy to whip some up for yourself.
>>27608818I have, although most games do tend to be humans, trolls and ducks. When Mongoose were publishing material for the second age, they published books for Dwarves, Elves and even Dragonnewts (ugh).
>>27608868>>27608867>>27608862then I guess it's just perceived inflexibility. Also I really hope not all the beastmen are broo style. In fact, I hope as few things are broo style as possible.
>>27608818remember the first and only rule: the GM is always right.in RQ/BRP the game trusts the GM, it hands the GM a set of system mechanics that simulates the setting and supports the GM in the GMs work, but it is up to the GM to decide what to include and what not to include in making the game as fun as possible for the players and the GM. BRP puts trust in the GM to know what will be most entertaining for teh players and hands teh GM the tools to explore that option. If the GM thinks so then yes you can play them. That is the BRP way.Unlike D&D which do its absolute best to enforce as much as possible so no one ha sto trust any one except the "rule" book.
>>27608771>Playing KoDP for the first time>Some Broos show up>No big deal, I'll just kill them and have done with it>Don't bother culling the herd>It happens a few more times over the next year or so, I think nothing of it.>Next thing I know like 75% of my herd has been Brooified, my people are starving, and those GODDAMN VOSTANG HORSEFUCKERS WON'T STOP RAIDING ME
>>27608868Aren't Glorantha dwarves really weird?
>>27608948And let me guess...>Storm Bulls show up like two years too late>Kill the Broos, but also eat all your food then get mad when you kick them out and don't have anything to gift them
>>27608922Oh yeah, not much is as crazed as the Broo. And the broo are one of the few unredeemably evil peoples in Glorantha. So bad not even I'll defend them, and I'll defend Fonrit, the Vadeli and the Spolites.
>>27608977all races are really weird, including the humans, though that's what happens i guess when almost everyone can throw down some magical miracles and occationaly become gods.
>>27608990You better not defend those Sable assholes.
>>27608922>Also I really hope not all the beastmen are broo styleNaw, Beastmen aren't the same things as Broo. Beastmen are Centaurs and Minotaurs and shit like that and are no worse than anybody else. Broo are manifest Chaos that spreads by infection, usually through animals. That's who they look kinda like Beastmen, but they're something else entirely.
>>27608977They're literally vat-grown living cogs in the World Machine, so yeah.
>>27608985>Not giving Storm Bulls giftsIt's like you WANT chaos to win. I bet you are also a dirty Lunar.
>>27608977Yeah. They're a bunch of weird short stumpy mishapen creatures who claim that the entire world is in actual fact a giant machine, and don't get why people keep thinking they worship a god. Their job is to fix the machine, and bring back the perfection of the start of the world. The problem is that the original Dwarves are almost all gone, and no one's exactly sure about the best way to fix the world. And then they've got to contend with the Elves who keep growing everywhere, and the Trolls who eat everything.
>>27609027>>27608990yeah, that's why I was hoping the beastmen weren't broo style. Fuck if I'm gonna play a broo, but I might want to play a manimal at some point, and that have required being a broo.
the Broo are (the inspiration to) the Beastmen of WHFRP, chaos unrefined.
>>27609056Read up on Cults of Prax. They have some beast men behavior in there. Not very much mind you, but it IS there.
>>27609056Beastmen are total bros. Also they're the reason why you don't fuck with the ducks.
>>27609026Oh come on, they're assholes, but not evil. There's a big difference. For one thing, assholes are worse.
>>27609049If they wanted gifts they should have shown up BEFORE the broopocalypse wiped out all my resources and forced me to constantly spend all my dosh on frantically buying cows and food.
>>27608985You should have the best thing to give them.A Fight.
Howard the Duck was pretty popular among nerds in the 70s.
>>27609236But I thought the Ducks were from Donald and Scrooge.
>>27609056Well, there's always also the Morokanth.Think sapient Tapir people who herd unintelligent human-like-creatures. (There was a big contest before time where all the groups of people and animals had to engage in contests to see who would win. In all cases but the Morokanth's, the humans won. Everyone says the Morokanth cheated. The Morokanth say that's because the humans were cheating first.)
>>27609264>The Morokanth say that's because the humans were cheating first.I thought the Morokanth said that they didn't cheat it was obviously the humans who cheated because they won every other time.It was actually reading that story that got me to stop hating Morokanth and respect them in their own way.Though we should dispell the horrid rumors that they turn normal men into beasts.
>>27609318Yeah, but that's why they cheated, because if they didn't they would have lost, so they pretended to be stupid and diseased, so Waha paired them up with the stupid men (who he was worried about pairing up with anyone else)And yeah, the herdmen arn't humans, although they're nearly human. They're herbivores for one. Of course, the Morokanth do keep human slaves. But all praxians do that, and keep Morokanth as slaves. And of course, they all raid each other to capture animals to slaughter. Which means that they're perfectly prepared to eat herdman.
>>27608477The whole notion of Evil in Gloranthra in general is actually all kinds of fucked up. Chaos is just absurd the unholy trio is the god of madness, goddess of rape and goddess of disease. With a bunch of minor footnote dead gods like a god of cancer. Everything they do is incredibly foul and just the worst. They exist as a comic cancer outside the world and underworld. They are the worst as demons or other things might kill you but powerful chaos creatures can kill your soul.On the other hand you have Demons. Specific underworld creatures native to Glorantha and have a part of their specific pantheon. They can be evil and cruel but they are at least part of this world. In Dara Happa there is a city called Alkoth which is literally hell on earth. Demons roam a cyclopean city that constantly rains black ash as damned souls and ghosts wail in torment. The human population is all by divine ritual considered already dead as only the dead can enter or at least partially avoid the attentions of the Lovecraftian horrors that dwell there.
>>27609485>In Dara Happa there is a city called Alkoth which is literally hell on earth. Demons roam a cyclopean city that constantly rains black ash as damned souls and ghosts wail in torment. The human population is all by divine ritual considered already dead as only the dead can enter or at least partially avoid the attentions of the Lovecraftian horrors that dwell there.Where can I insert my money?
>>27609485Why is there even a human population there? People voluntarily wanted to settle in hell?
>>27609485Of course, the Uholy Trio may just be a metaphor someone took literally. The Lunars, for example, don't believe Ragnaglar existed, and pin his crimes on Orlanth.
>>27609554Lunars are in bed with Chaos. They will say whatever to make themselves feel better.
>>27609553Yeah, they worshipped Shargash, god of death, destruction, and protector of the Emperor. They get to dwell at the foot of their God, they get to protect the rightful Emperor from Usurpers, and all that ash makes their fields fertile.
>>27609592True. There's a (most likely Carmanian) myth from around there involving the Unholy Trio murdering Rashoran, the God of Enlightenment. Of course, that may be their version of the death of Yelm. There's an awful lot of contradictory myths.
>>27609485>In Dara Happa there is a city called Alkoth which is literally hell on earth. Demons roam a cyclopean city that constantly rains black ash as damned souls and ghosts wail in torment. The human population is all by divine ritual considered already dead as only the dead can enter or at least partially avoid the attentions of the Lovecraftian horrors that dwell there.Literally Fantasy Demon Sparta. I fucking love Alkoth.
>>27609612You have to hand it to the Dara Happans sometimes. They might be huge hidebound douchebags, but they can be really cool at times.
>>27609612Is their cultural trait gigantic balls.
>>27609702"Hidebound douchbags" is another word for successful survivors.Look at the Orlanthi. For all their talk of change, they're as tradition based as anyone. Except, of course, when they get involved in world changing civilizations like the First Council and the EWF.
>>27609768The Orlanthi are hidebound douchebags until something goes wrong. Then all fucking bets are off.
>>27609553People who are cultists insane or otherwise and their descendants. The whole city is enclosed in a massive jade wall which is the Torc of Shargash the destroyer. Which bound him to peace but fell off in the gods time when he was loosed to slay. The city as its depicted is just mad stuff. Like lovecraft meets GWAR. Living humans dragging cages of the unworthy dead to faceless demons who then fall upon them burning their souls and raising them as eternally burning and suffering hellmen from the black ash. Its hard to tell if anyone is actual dead or alive there. The book Dara Happa stirs has a lot of info on it.
>>27609865oh here we go.The forced ritual of mock execution on visistors to prepare them and mark them as dead is the best.http://webspace.webring.com/people/lo/oliverb/stories/alkoth.htmlYou get ritually beheaded with all the fun of experiencing your soul torn from your body and made the plaything of demons. and after your body is done thrashing you awake hale and whole with deep psychological scars.
>>27609865It should also be noted that there was one dude who was so fucking metal that he forced Hell Sparta to swear allegiance to him by showing up and being even more fucked up badass than the demigod-King of Alkoth
>>27609958yeah the three kings are straight up half human horrors. The Green and Red kings being depicted as actual regal and something like a sultanate with masses of sycophants and servents. The black king is part preacher and part boogyman who roams the streets caked in so much ash you can barely tell hes a man.
>>27610241Not as many slaves as I would imagine. Is this going to be art the The Guide?
>>27610328Yeah, that's a view of Prax, from the paps, looking west.Things like slaves arn't really visible at that distance. And yeah, it's from the guide, they've got some tidbits of art on the Glorantha site.
>>27610450>they've got some tidbits of art on the Glorantha site. They also have plenty of art on the google community.
>tfw as soon as the trolling stops the Glorantha thread stopsCome on guys, we could have really salvaged this thread.
>>27613266well, is there anything you'd want to talk about?Part of the fun is asking questions for new people, which the trolling help brought in, but with a bunch of people who already know the setting reasonably well, we'd kind of need something to talk about.
>>27613446Well... what the shit is with Dragon Newts? How can people actually like Lunars? Is it just me or is the Crimson Bat OP?
The troll here reminds me of fucking Vroom Vroom. Has he moved on from Battletech?
>>27613607Okay, firstly. (And obviously, YGWV)I figure that Dragonnewts, and Dragons, are effectively heroquesting in the mundane world all the time. They're constantly following a script no one else can see for the purpose of advancing spiritually, which grants them amazing powers, but leaves them flatfooted if anything goes wrong.Imagine that you're doing the Orlanth and Aroka quest, and suddenly Daga seduces Orlanth. That's what it's like to a Dragonnewt when someone doesn't recognise their dance is one of greeting.Dragonnewts seem to be able to see into the future because of this script, but just like how the Orlanth and Aroka quest doesn't tell you about Elmal Guards the Stead, this doesn't mean Dragonnewts know everything which will happen. And just as you can die in a quest due to bad luck, so can they.Secondly, the Lunars have a very sympathetic mindset to modern perspectives. They're civilized, arn't as paranoid, sexist and racist as others, and are quite accepting. The problem is that they're Glorantha's version of neopagans. Going around claiming everyones goddesses are actually aspects of this one great goddess associated with the moon, and how what seems evil is actually just oppression from the status quo.And thirdly: What do you expect from a God? The problem is that it's in our world, when most arn't.

This is the one that usually gets the WTFs.Duck boobs.
>>27614223As it should. Why the fuck would ducks have boobs?
>>27614242Eh, I blame the germans. My Glorantha lacks duck breasts. But then, in my Glorantha ducks are descended from Hadrosaurs, so I'm not the most normal of GMs.
>>27608311Pretty weird actually. I recommend it whenever I see a new person looking for an RPG
>>27614223Duck boobs are weird. But do you want to know what is worse?Ducks still incubate in an egg but female ducks have live births. That is right. The egg hatches inside the duck vagina and is expelled with the duckling. That sharp, glass like shell.
Can someone give me a quick overview of Glorantha/Runequest or should I make a new thread?
>>27618948Calling that a tall order is the understatement of the millennium, but this quote from 1d4chan should give you an idea of that it's like:>Dwarves are cogs of the world machine, Elves are plant elementals who like to bust a nut, the world is a d6 in a sea of Mountain Dew, history gets re-written every two and a half seconds, Dragons are the size of continents, you visit the Gods in Valhalla every Thursday, Bob has a mincer that can turn an entire bison into burgers, and the best spell is "Leap Through Window to Avoid Angry Husband".I tried to do a genealogy of the deities of Glorantha and nearly went insane. Calling it a cat's cradle is a charitable assessment; trying to depict it in a two-dimensional format is a fucking nightmare (literally). I'll post what I came up with in a bit.
>>27607884Best game is best.I still play RQ, never liked Gloratha though. D100 system (and no fucking levels) is the only system I've managed to like throughout the ages.
>>27608525How does the Pharoe come into things?
>>27609958Tell me more about this man.
>>27619195And now you know how the God Learners felt. The idea that all these gods fit into this neat little family tree, despite being isolated by continents, oceans, language barriers and entire systems of magic, that's their whole plan.
>>27619195Where do you even find all the data for that?
>>27618948Okay, how to put this. "Bronze age", human centric fantasy world. Religion, Superstition and Philosophy are indistinguishable from Magic. And are, for all intents and purposes. The nonhumans typically are nonhuman. Skin colour's not as important to most gloranthans, as your biggest foe are the people the next hill over. It doesn't really matter if they're black, yellow, red, white or blue. What matters is they have something you want, or they killed your grandfather.>>27619268No one knows for certain. He just walked in from the sea one day, and proclaimed himself God King of the Holy Country. Which he founded by absorbing six other countries to do so. Which he did by cheating.
>>27619195>Bob has a mincer that can turn an entire bison into burgersI learned about this after Bob's Burgers and while I think it is most likely a coincidence I would like to think the name of the cartoon is a nod to Bob's Bison Burgers.
>>27619307The wiki helps immensely, as does some of the old material from the Moon Design website. A lot of it comes from various rulebooks and sourcebooks that I acquired legally on the internet. One of the biggest hurdles is that every myth in Glorantha is true, even the ones that contradict the other ones. For instance, Hykim's parentage is disputed, and this doesn't account for that.Anyway, here it is. And I should note that it's still incomplete by a fair bit. Also I left off most of the Vingkoting parts in it, but the whole thing also traces the lineages of Heort and Harmast Barefoot.Italics mean that that person is found somewhere else in the genealogy and should be mentally linked there (sorry, but I don't have three dimensions to work with).
>>27614116No, they have the cult of Stormbill Chaosfoe for that.
>>27619285This man is Sheng Seleris, who was kinda like fantasy Genghis Khan if Genghis Khan was hopped up on the power of Darkness itself. The dude kinda took iron will and self-discipline to such an absurd extent that he was able to do shit that nobody else could even dream of. Shit like invading the goddamn moon, among other things.
>>27619714That's certainly extensive. I have to say, never get a copy of the Glorious Reascent of Yelm. The Gods Wall will totally mess up that chart.
>>27620275The Gods Wall is great. You can sit and play guess the deity all day long.
>>27620275I've actually never been able to find a copy.
>>27620314Yeah. Even with the key, the fact that those are merely in-universe associations makes it awesome.
>>27620323Ah right. Well, here's a guide: http://glorantha.wikia.com/wiki/Gods_WallThe rows go from right to left.
I want to know more about the magic sistem. And about the Hsunchen or the hell they are called.
>>27622402Broadly speaking there are three kinds of magic:The first is Rune Magic which draws power from the Runes, which are the fundamental building blocks of Glorantha. The Runes are usually controlled by the gods, so Rune Magic can be said to come from the gods, and you use it by emulating what a certain god did back in the day. So if you have the Air Rune, you essentailly can throw a lightning bolt at someone because you've learned the secret to do so from the cult of Orlanth. Converserly the gods can also cut you off if you piss them off somehow. The thing to remember here is that a runic connection is something that you are. The stronger your connection with a rune is, the mre do you start to embody the rune itself. For example, someone with a strong connection to the Air Rune tends to be passionate, proud and unpredictable.(cont)
>>27622595The second type is Spirit magic, which works by binding allied spirits into charms and using their power to do magic. This is very versatile, but spirits are strange and unpredictable and you have to appease or trick them into serving you.Spirits are something you have, and thus something that you can lose. If a spirit magician loses his spirits, he can't do shit, which is a pretty big drawback.(cont)
>>27622613The third type of magic is Sorcery. This is the form closest to the classical wizard type, with book learning and grimoires and shit. Sorcery works by using spells, which are essentialy manifestations of the Universal Law of Glorantha.Spells are something you know, so nobody can take them away from you. Spells are also extremely effective at doing one thing, much moreso than Rune or Spirit magic. The first drawback is that a single spell is only good for doing one specific thing, e.g. a spell of "set wood on fire" would set wood on fire really, really well, but if you wanted to set grass on fire it wouldn't work at all.The second drawback is that you need to learn the spells, which takes time, effort and either a teacher or a spell grimoire. The third drawback is that the most powerful sorcerous traditions are extremely conservative and hidebound and the spells are designed in such a way that they simply don't work unless you meet the requirements and obey the ritual taboos of the order.Oh, and the people who mainly use sorcery are either a bunch of asshole monotheists whose not-Bible also happens to be one of the most powerful spellbooks or a bunch of isolationist asshole atheists who are led by the literal Sorcerer Supreme.
>>27622613Can't you also enter into the spirit world too, to wrangle those incorporeal bastards into doing your shit?
>>27622725Yeah, but that's more high-level shit. Normally you search out some spirits and negotiate with them in the normal world.
>>27622741What kind of spirits you can controll? Things like demon and shit or more elemental things like salamanders?
>>27622963Spirits and demons are different things. There are both fire spirits and fire demons, but a Spirit magician could only control the spirit. And spirits can be pretty much anything. You never really know what one will do before you identify it, but you can make an educated guess. The exact kinds of spirits you usually can control depends on your spirit society tradition, so a Kolating shaman usually controls spirits of the air, but that's not a hard rule either.Spirit magic be weird, man.
>>27623030Jeez, now I want to know more. I'm all for Spirits and demons in a more old fashion way (like the medieval ones) than the tipical DnD stuff. Who are the kolating Shamans for example? How do you bind a spirit? Can you bind demons or control them? And speaking of them, what are exactly the spirits and what are the demons if they aren't the same?
>>27623101Demons in Glorantha is a general term for physical manifestations of Rune Magic. For example, Salamanders are manifestations of the Fire Rune and a sufficiently strong Fire Rune magician can summon and command them. Demons are mostly mindless with a few exceptions.Spirits, on the other hand, come from the Spirit World, which is kind of a mirror of Glorantha except not really. They are unrelated to the Runes and can be anything from your deceased ancestors to a local folk hero to a huge-ass fire spirit who likes to burn oaks. Spirits are strange as all hell, but they have likes and needs and you usually can't just command them as you could with demons.Kolating shamans are the shaman of the Orlanthi, i.e. the good ol' celtic storm vikings. They usually bind spirits by gambling with them for favours or by offering the spirit something it wants. This all includes a lot of shrooms and drumming and weird-ass chants and shit like that.Other shamanic traditions focus more on calling on your ancestors, which usually is easier than binding random-ass spirits, but if you do something they disapprove of they might just decide to curse you instead.Basically summarizing this shit is hard, because one of the defining aspects of Glorantha is that everybody does magic slightly differently depending on your cultural traditions. For example, Orlanthi don't usually use Spirit magic, and Sorcery is taboo with one exception.
RuneQuest was very popular in Finland during the 90s. I was a little kid back then, but later I got old finnish translations of both RQ and Stormbringer.
>>27623180>Sorcery is taboo with one exception.Oh COME ON you can't just say that and leave us hanging.
>>27623302The God of Neckbeards and his worshippers get to do a little Sorcery because fuck you that's why.
>>27623242Aye. Started my RPG career back then (circa 15 years ago) with RQ and still come back to it from time to time, luckily the Finnish versions are easy to find even nowadays.
>>27623371To give a slightly more useful answer, the Orlanthi god of knowledge Lhankor Mhy possesses a magic cipher device known as the Alien Combination Machine. Followers of Lhankor Mhy who have the Law rune can use this device to "decontaminate" sorcerous spells.
>>27623668>Orlanthi god of knowledge Lhankor MhyFun fact, Lhankor Mhy is nicknamed "The Knowing God" by his worshippers. Everybody else usually calls him the "Know-It-All God".Dude's pretty much one of the That Guys of the Orlanthi pantheon.
>>27623750Another fun fact: All worshipers of Lhankor Mhy are required to have beards. This means that female worshipers wear false beards.
>>27623750Who isn't a that guyn in the orlanthi pantheon? Apart of Elmal The Dude-Bro.
>>27623563They made so much of them at once back in a day that they couldn't sell them all, I think. I also have (used) "Kauhun ja Pimeyden Kultit" ("The Cults of Horror and Darkness"). Some pages are missing, so it has no rules for Nysalorn, Malia and the Red Bat Cults. To be honest, Glorantha was never my favorite settings. I kinda bought the game because the main editor of "Magus" made most of his stuff for RQ, and I was kinda fanboy for that magazine.(Also, God my english sucks. Should use it more and not just read it.)
>>27623779Elmal the Dude-BroVinga the Dudette-BroBarntar the other Dude-BroHeler the other Dude/Dudette/it's kinda confusing-BroAnd Orlanth himself is kinda bro-ish when he isn't fucking shit up.
So was it the god learners or someone else who almost ended all creation with agnostism?
>>27623821No, the God Learners almost ended all creation with comparative anthropology.
>>27623843Wonder how many fantasy settings have almost been destroyed by anthropologists.
Oh, gods, don't mess with the ducks.
>>27623791Yeah, we went mostly homebrew after the first couple of games, but we return from time to time, if for nothing else than the ducks.I think that Fantasia Pelit has number of the older books still available.
>>27623935Wonder if they worship humakti version of Donald Duck.
>>27623935Fucking with the ducks leads to bad shit, yes.
>>27623948As far as I know the ducks have duckified version of the Orlanthi gods, except for Humakt who's still a swole viking dude, except that he wears a fake bill.Have some Humakt, by the way. Dem sideburns.
>>27623957Well mostly fucking with anything at all leads to very bad shit.
Runequest is 6 bags of awesome and I loved every session I played of it.

>>27624366..this sounds very, very, awesome.
>>27607884I'm DM:ing a Runequest sixth ed currently. Homebrewed setting. Some of the magic is a bit broken if the players don't self-censor (looking at you Enhance attribute), and some of the rules wording is a bit dodgy/unclear. Also the vanilla tactical grid movement rules are a complete clusterfuck and should be homebrewed to a more simplified ruleset (I go with one AP to move, two move actions a round. Half your movement rate is your walking speed. If you sac all your AP at the start of a round you can sprint).Besides that its pretty good. Combat is nice and got good flow and depth without becoming needlessly complex and CharGen is nice and flexible.

>>27624877Well, I personally find it erotic as hell when dark-skinned, slutty women with a body to back it up have pierced nipples, but on a dude? Especially a buff, manly mcbeefsteroid minotaur piercing his nipples? That's fucking /hm/ tier right there.
>>27624893Are you really gonna tell the guy that though?
>>27624912No, but when he demands that we perform the traditional chest bump and slap-ass greeting ritual of his people, I'm definitely going to pretend that I can hear my wife calling me and that I left the hearthfire on.
>>27624943I think the minotaur greetings are more of a wrasslin' match than anything else.
>>27624982That's the formal greeting. Informal is chest bump and slap-ass, and the last time I let a minotaur touch my ass, that ended with the village shaman having to perform an emergency cleansing of my bowels and a restraining order from the lawful neutral cleric forcing said minotaur to stay at least 60 meters away from me at all times.
>>27622595Aren't you also only allowed to display X number of runes depending on your rank in a cult? Or is that just a RQ6 thing?
>>27625230You generally start with three runes, IIRC. You can get more through various means, though.

>>27625380What isn't a guy in Mortal Kombat by this point?
>>27625394Well, when you have like, five different pantheons and almost everybody is doing a Zeus, that's the inevitable result.

She dressed in her finest clothes and walked by Eurmal, who tried to ignore her but changed the way he was standing. Uleria then started to remove her clothing, very slowly, and smiled at Eurmal who had to use a sporran to hide his embarrassment. When Uleria removed all her clothes and started to show Eurmal what he was missing, those who looked on thought that Eurmal was holding a pink spear which almost took his eye out. Finally, Uleria used the rest of her charms and Eurmal would have been lost except that Orlanth called to him to attend. Eurmal could not see the Storm God in his condition, especially after Orlanth's threat, and because he could not easily walk, he snapped off the pink spear and threw it to Uleria with a laugh. Uleria took the spear and, deprived of his company and starting to itch, used it for her own pleasure.I like where this is going.
