Which is the grimdarkest setting you can think of and are you really gonna pick that one?
>and are you really gonna pick that one?You lost me
Kult is pretty fucking grimdark,
>>27386067Dark Souls is pretty dark, I guess. I hear a bunch of people saying Kingdom Death is darker, though.
>>27386555I was going to mention Dark Souls, yeah. Also, Berserk and Bokurano. 40k ain't got nothin' on that shit.
Real life, because you get to have a lifetime of mediocrity, nothing special ever happens, and the entire time you are getting fucked over one way or the other.
>>27386067Drakengard is dark, but I don't think it's the darkest setting out there. Sure the world's doomed and everybidy is insane, but I've seen worse.
>>27386740That's just like one of my incomprehensible visions of that which man cannot contemplate!
>>27386740This. At least in most fantasy universes gods are proven to exist and an afterlife is possible. In reality..not so much. Sure you can try to believe in something but it will only ever be a belief not a certainty.
I'd rule out Berserk because Berserk actually has hope. That's what I love about it; that there's actually a chance Guts could manage to kill off the Godhand and save Casca. But it still makes it not as grimdark as most.Honestly, I'd probably go First Edition Exalted, before they pissed all over the Fey. Even 40k still has hope. Leman Russ and Vulkan could still show up again, or the Emperor could wake up, or the Necrons, Tyranids, and the forces of Chaos could Pyrrhic Victory each other and get a MAD scenario, leaving us alone with a calm warp and the comparatively minor threats of the Orks, Tau, and Eldar. But First Edition Exalted had NO hope. Shit was completely fucked. The Cthulhu fairies were coming, time was running out, the age of wonders of today is a burnt and broken husk of what once was, anybody and anything that could potentially stop the end was cosmologically prevented from doing so or compelled by their own powers to be jacking off in a corner forever, and everybody had fucked up collectively to get us to this point. The Lunars fucked up, the Solars were overthrown tyrants, the Sidereals were smug assholes who broke the universe they were sworn to protect and won't admit anything is wrong, and the Dragonblooded had effectively enslaved humanity into a cult of lies that witchhunted and persecuted any Exalts, particularly Solars, that arose, to cover up the atrocities they committed in the past.Everything was fucked, it was everybody's fault, there was no saving the world, the clock was ticking down, and an entire universe of Mary Sues and Weaboo bullshit hax couldn't save it.Then they pussied the fuck out and made the Fey defeatable. But before then, yeah. Probably have to give it to Exalted. Most settings at least have the hope that everything will blow up and something might rise up out of the ashes to rebuild. In Exalted, that had already happened. This was the second apocalypse, only this time for keeps.
>>27388989Thought according to one /co/mrade with a tendency to make 40K references in Sinfest threads this is a strong contestant.
A campaign in the far realm with call of cthulu rules
Total AnnihilationProve me fucking wrong.
>>27389052There are no pedophiles or baby cannibalists, so it doesn't even reach OP's.
>>27386132I think he was implying 40k, silly anon.>>27389329>Pedophile>Child-eater>Little boy who is cursed to be young foreverA more beautiful picture has never been painted.
>>27389849The sinister aspect of golem-boy isn't the agelessness, it's the fact he's a jealous shithead. His sister was abused because he lied to their parents.>paedophilia>cannibalism>parental abuse>genocide>eldritch abominations
>>27389914I laughed like an asshole.
>>27388989Man I bet there's no traffic there
>>27386067Final Fantasy Tactics is pretty goddamn grim.Anything set in the Thirty Years War is pretty goddamn grim.40k is pretty goddamn grim.
>>27389006The Tau aren't actually a threat.
>>27389950And then the genocidal mute eradicated all human life on Earth, without even trying.
>>27389950Oh, I know the agelessness isn't grimdark. I just find it amusing how the party has two people who enjoy hurting children and one kid who is cursed to always look like a child. And then there's the giant cannibal babies who never open their eyes(like Leonard). It all just ties together so wonderfully.
>go on epic adventure to save daughter>trail of tears, blood, and sacrifice in your wake>kill two of your best and only friends, and two others lay down their lives, just so that you can reach the BBEG>finally kill him by the skin of your teeth>your daughter is saved>friend/lover's mind and body are suddenly consumed by creeping corruption>save her by erasing your very existence from reality and the minds of everyone who ever knew you>All of it was pointless because all the people left on Earth are sterile clones, and you killed both the cloners and the only person capable of restoring the original humansDraken-Nier!
Earth 2013>Murders abound>Child rapists everywhere>Obama>Everything that's wrong with every grimdark universe is just a reflection of the true horror of our consensus reality>Earth is the greatest horror story we've ever known
>>27390007If anything the derpderp HERESY KILL THE XENO Imperium without the Emperor is a major threat. The Tau just want to chill and smoke some Greater Good.
>>27390620CAVIAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I miss them so.
Russia at pretty much any point in history
I hear alot about Detroit, but its not even in the top 10 of urban hellholes.Try spending even a week in Grozny or Belgrade if you like your shitholes sleazy, hopeless, and soaked in casual violence. Then there's Ciudad Juarez, the City of Death, Rape, and your teeth being found five years later at the bottom of some farmer's pig-troth.
>>27390698Drakengard 3 this December, anon. It's being made by all the best doods from Nier and the original Drakengard.According to Wiki, Yoko Taro(the guy responsible for most of the grimdark) said that if you go into it expecting Drakengard or Nier that you'll be disappointed, but I don't believe that he's capable of creating something that isn't horribly bleak.
>>27386067I'd say Vampire the Masquerade, but that's mainly due to me playing Bloodlines a ton lately, and trying for the Sabbat ending, which has lead to some..interesting dialogue choices with 4 humanity. The Warrens are still the worst goddamn area in the game, and fucking werewolves jesus christ
>>27389006IIRC, Skull Knight basically said Guts has to choose between saving Casca or killing Griffith, so there's a bit less hope in that than you're saying. I could be wrong, though, as I haven't been keeping up with Berserk much lately.
>>27389006This actually sounds pretty awesome. What makes the Fey unbeatable, and how was that changed?
>>27386605Yeah, Bokurano. Deconstruction of the giant robot genre, great anime.
>>27388989Damn, GM has a sick corporate headquarters. It's like an island of sleek awesomeness in a sea of dilapidated shit.
>>27391102The Skull Knight implied that Guts will have to make a choice about this, yes, but he was vague about it. He also said, and this was much more clearly than the first implication, that the world is "like shadows and reflections in the water of a stream." Everyone and everything in the world is ephemeral. Griffith is an exception. He's real, more real than anything else, and has a gravity that pulls other things to him. He's taken over the narrative of the world, inserting himself in as the hero. This was part of his bargain. The Skull Knight made it quite clear that so long as Guts remains a shadow cast in the water, he cannot defy or oppose Griffith and the Godhand. But he also implied that it was within Gut's power to break free of the narrative that has unfolded, and that he could stand outside of the story like Griffith does. If he can do that, then Guts will be free to make his own destiny, and can face Griffith as an equal.Whether or not he can manage it, and what price he'll have to pay to get there, remains to be seen.>>27391123Numbers made them unbeatable. They were uncountable legion, a truly infinite tide that infected reality and warped the living and material parts of the world they invaded into becoming part of the Fey. They could not be stopped. They could not even be successfully contained. Their victory was inevitable. The setting pussied out by taking away the "they could not even be successfully contained" part. They retconed it. And part of why I hate the fandom for it is because they're all ass-blasting retards who don't understand what a "retcon" is. You try and talk to them about it, and they're like "no, the new update says this, so it's true," and I'm like "yes, it does, but the OLD version said something completely DIFFERENT. They CHANGED it. It's retroactive continuity." And then they look at me like I'm some speaking some kind of offensive foreign language.
Does Promethean: The Created count, or would I have to nominate the entire WoD?
>>27393096I know it sounds awesome, but there's nothing awesome there anymore. Trust me on that one. If you wanted to play the original version of it, you'd basically have me DMing and you'd be alone. Pretty much everyone who plays it now uses "kawaii-desu-nee" in actual spoken sentences as much as possible. That's the problem. Exalted tried to be a grim deconstruction of Mary Sues, Wapanese bullshit, and crazy over the top shonen-style fighting. But a group of people who amuse themselves by pretending to be idiots will eventually find their group overrun by actual idiots who believe themselves to be in good company. Same principle happened here. Exalted was taken over by players and GMs who didn't understand the "this is a deliberate parody and deconstruction" part, and naturally they threw a pissfit when they found out that they couldn't save the day with their Mary Sue characters. So that got changed, the Fey got downgraded, and now everything that was remotely interesting about the setting isn't worth putting up with all the bullshit to see. It's sad, but I suppose this is the example of what happens when you lose the gamble of assuming an intelligent audience.
>>27393126WoD is pretty grim. Pretty much every segment includes at least one way (completely independent of all the others) that the world could conceivably end. If you take the entire World of Darkness together as a big picture, there are about fifteen different ways society/the world/the entire universe could die, and a couple of them are pretty inevitable, like the encroaching Fey from Changling, or the fact that the Werewolves are losing their war against the hungry darkness from beyond the elder void. The whole place is set to go up like a napalm-coated beeswax candle in an International Light Your Own Farts Competition. It's just a matter of time and whose fart sets it off first.
I'm dissapointed nobody said Midnight yet.Take your classic good against evil fantasy setting... and have evil curb stomp the forces of good. In most other fantasy games, you're a damn big hero if you save a kingdom or slay an evil god. Here... just saving a village is takes a damn big hero.... and then when you have your back turned, orcs come in, enslave the men, rape the women, and devour the children.I swear, Midnight makes Ravenloft look like Peppa Pig.>>27393126>>27393275Oddly.. Prommie is kinda the most optimistic part of the WoD. With all the others, you're going into a slow descent into madness and monstrosity.. with Prommie, you can actually get a happy ending. Gonna be hard as hell... but, you can get there.
>>27393126Promethean is probably the only book that has the most outright hope in WoD, though they do start out pretty damned hopeless. You can earn a happy ending, an ending that doesn't wind in your death, madness, betrayal or whatever could happen as a Vampire, Mage, or Werewolf, and boy do you fucking earn it.
>>27386539Only one mention of Kult so far? Kult is THE grimdark game as far as I am aware.

>>27390102Leonard doesn't enjoy hurting children. He kinda hates himself for it. Probably because his village was butchered while he was molesting kids in the woods.
>>27393096So the question will be will guts sell Casca for his revenge.
>>27395835You know, I saw the movies the other day and realized... Caska makes awful waifu material. She's obsessed with another guy, attacks Guts for no reason, is so stupidly tsundere it hurts, and it takes 100 dead guys just so she will start to warm up. And she's always menstruating! And that's before she ended up crazy and hating Guts again, mind you.

>>27386067Total Annihilation is pretty Grimdark.Everyone have already lost, you are just trying to make the other side lose a tiny bit more than yourself.
>>27395622Because it's not that bad? Your life is reliably short, you don't have to worry about going through 60+ years of horrible experiences, if you're lucky, which most people are, they experience something horrible once, and then they're dead.Real grimdark involves a life time of pain and agony, sprinkled liberally with pleasant moments, just to make the pain hurt that much more.
>>27395622GW codex kiddie-fluff 40k is not grimdark, reasonable 40k (as sometimes portrayed in Forge World books) is where the true grimdark lies.
Wrath: The Oblivion.
Dishonored is pretty Grimdark. After all the only religion we see there have the highest hope for the afterlife be having your soul and mind being wiped out.

>>27393413Part of the Promethean scavenger hunt entails creating another to take your place
>>27396628So that explains the Senate.
>>27391183My heritage makes me obligated to tell you that the anime is an absolute shitfest. As in, it was a REAL bad adaption done by a director that admitted to not reading the source material and hating the authors other works.OP is god tier, but you should really read the manga if you liked the series, it's tons better.
"Stand on Zanzibar" by John Brunner. It's reality + 10 years, written in the 1960s. Scary and depressing shit. Also every other dystopic SF novel.
Postapocalyptic settings like Mad Max 2+, Waterworld and A Boy And His Dog where there's really nothing left but a huge desert with small settlements of batshit insane survivors.RPG settings is definitely Kult. No hope.
>>27396776That always impressed with Fallout raider. These are the people that genuinely decorate their homes with assorted human parts.Without any kind of reward or benefit.Khorne Berserkers at least get something for their bloodletting and savagery.Fallout Raiders? No god of bloodshed, no magic rewards for butchery. no bribes or enticements. They are pure in a way.
>>27396844That's Fallout 3 raiders.
Total Annihilation has been mentioned, but the spiritual successor, Planetary Annihilation also has a a setting pretty much devoid of hope. I mean, isn't the story that mankind has gone extinct god knows how long ago, and now their self-replicating warmachines are just tearing planets apart warring eachother for literally no purpose? There is no hope, as there is no victory or defeat either, just pointless destruction.
>>27396991True. Of course there were no humans around in Total Annihilation either, just Patterns and cloned scraps of meat.
>>27386067is that a picture of Johniass Dragonraper?
>>27391270That's the Ren Cen, no idea if GM uses the top as an HQ.

>>27399338>>27399354Well, obviously you should start by not being American, that would solve most of these problems.
>>27399379I'm not allowed to secede.
>>27399398Now, that's just negative thinking. You'll never know if you don't try.
>>27398997The world is an overcrowded shit hole. Drug abuse which has become legal, to keep people calm , oversexualized including incest society, killing sprees and violent riots are normal. The Western Hemisphere is practically ruled by global corporations. And conflicts over scarce resources arise. It's pretty much earth 2013+something, except the fact that soviet Russia still exists and Japan+Taiwan+South Korea form a new fascist empire. Not an easy read though. Still if you want to feel depression and desperation read Brunner. I also recommend "Shockwace Rider" and "Sheep look Up".
>>27399415I did. I was told I'm not allowed to give up my citizenship because then I'd have to go live on a reservation and it'd cost them too much.

>>27399463How about moving to another country? Stowing away in a cargo ship is a cheap and fun way of travelling!
>>27399504How do I do that. If I had a stablock my Streetwise and Vagrant Lore would be at a -10

>>27399471They are united by their mutual desire to murderize everything.
>>27395994>>27389052The only Total Annihilation I know is a video game about robots that lacked grouping, what are you talking about?
Bumpan for grimdarkness
Square Enix's Ivalice setting. The earlier installments chronologically are pretty standard JRPG fantasy (Final Fantasy 12, FF12RW, FF Tactics A2), but the further down the timeline you go, the worse it tends to get (FFT, Vagrant Story) as the world dies and loses it's magic.
>>27403568That's the one, I loved it, even if the lack of grouping was a pain in the ass. So what does that have to do with pedophilia?
>>27403644It's Drakengard that has the pedophilia.
>>27403644The OP just asked for the most Grimdark setting. No pedophilia required.
>>27404876/a/ pls go
>>27388145>are you hurt?
>>27388145You must have had a very sheltered life if you think those things are edgy. And things like the coming Dark Age of the universe, followed eventually by the Big Rip and Heat Death, are all pretty grimdark.
>>27405620But almost every fictional universe has entropy, suckiness and those other things mentioned too, so that doesn't make real life grimdark.
>Modern day Earth is visited by beings from another dimension claiming to come in peace.>Later on said beings claim that Humanity "has no souls" and the only way for someone to get one is to turn into one of these beings.>Beings leader summons a Thaumic wall to "Purify" the Earth.>Cue Genocide
>>27409444As an aside I really hate the setting and the guys who came up with this to no end .
Riddick.I would sooner live in any of the other settings in this thread, than in a future where, despite space travel and crazy bitchin' tech and shit, people still smoke fucking Kools.
>>27386067Paranoia is so goddamn horrifying, lethal, and treacherous that it becomes slapstick as everything burns, gets betrayed, dissolved, disintegrated, backstabbed, etc.
>>27399023I do. I was actually thinking about that. I mean it's literally Hell, but there's no demons or anything jabbing you in the ass with pitchforks and fire melting your eyes out all day. All the awful people in Hell are pretty much left alone. And they just do the most horrible, awful shit to each other in the slim hope of being powerful and important, and when they have everything they want in their grasp, it comes crashing down. It's pretty brutal.
>>27399023I'm guessing you read the storytime the other day.
>>27393096Of course this all requires that Miura fucking keeps writing the thing instead of dicking around.
>>27409464This is a real setting?
>>27396303Bunnies and burrows played right.
>>27386067I love the look on Caim.
>>27415879He is best at chaotic evil.
>>27386605I don't know about that. 40k is grimdark to the point of parody, while Berserk and Bokurano are just normal grimdark. Bokurano might be more grim than 40k, seeing as it involves the destruction of multiple universes. If it were just about the destruction of planets, it wouldn't be too bad.
>>27413845Yes, but the thing its based off of is a childrens cartoon whose fans need to be purged in the second coming of Prometheus, Though i would argue the fans of that very Thing is perhaps ever worse (They actually want this to happen).
>>27391102Wouldn't surprise me if he managed to do both through raw grit and hatred. So long as he wears that armor, he's literraly fueled by anger and willpower....come to think of it, the only three animes/mangas that I actually care for have protagonists with similar characteristics. Guts, Simon (TTGL is just distilled anti-depressent in the form of animation, so he damn well better have more willpower than your body has room for), and Eren Jaeger (50% anger, 50% cinematic screenshake).
>>27405864They also offer a great reward with some kind of metaphysical insight or something alike and most rl topics like genocide and the like are only touched rudimentary for a reason. When have you ever heard of child rape cannibalism in 40K.
>>27403483FFT and Vagrant Story are a couple of my favorite games of all time. I also nominate the Ogre Battle Saga for a very well-done low fantasy "grimdark" setting. Tactics Ogre: LUCT and Ogre Battle MOTBK are both so great. What do you think the best RPG system would be to emulate these sort of games?
>>27415898I think he's more a chaotic netural really. His concerns are for his own: Family, friends, seal to not destroy the world. He just has that flaw of enjoying his killination. BUT, it's only from the Imperial forces, who he is at war with. You never see Caim kill anyone who's not associated with the Empire (save for stuff to do with the endings). Caim's murderistic tendencies is extended revenge to those who wronged him (the Empire who killed his parents).Being a general dick doesn't equal being evil.
>>27419620To be fair, he'd probably be considered pretty fucking evil in your standard DnD setting. In Drakengard he has the excuse of being able to vent his vindictive aggression on things that are simply way worse than him.
>>27418878Slow down before you cut yourself on that edge
>>27390620All to a very awesome soundtrack.Man I loved Nier.
>>27419837I should really get this game! It's like $8.00 now
>>27419762>>27419620I think it's kind of funny that people think Caim is just SUCH a murderhobo. If you go back to the games, yes in drakengard 2 he smiled when he killed people, but he didn't much seem like that at the beginning of the first.I think that all the war that he had gone through pretty much gave him a kind of ptsd and tortured his overall psyche. He put thousands of men to the death by blade alone, fought monsters, killed dragons, and his last greatest enemy? A little girl. A little girl that he had resolved to let live so that she would forever see the results of her actions. If he was really as brutal as people remember him, he'd have killed that little cunt too.
>>27419892He didn't try to make her redeem herself. He was punishing her. It was all to make her suffer for something she didn't do of her own free will.
>>27390953After Drakengard and Nier I could use something less soul-crushingly bleak from them.
>>27389009He is retarded.
>>27419976Yes, but it's still an act of mercy to some degree. Especially because one way or another he would eventually die and she would then live on her own. It's actually rather interesting that he even took care of her for the time. She was the reason that he only had one eye in 2.
>>27396002the grimdark of 40k doesn't come from one person have one bad experience then dying. It comes from the fact that you are born in a universe were the only thing you have to look forward to in your pathetic life is a horrible death that is guaranteed to all, and you and your children and your children's children, and no matter how hard you fight at best you can only keep the enemies at bay long enough to have another line of your ancestors born before your planet is purged of all life and forgotten.
>>27417191Bokurano isn't really grimdark because of the destruction of universes, more of the children being forced to murder everyone on Earth in those universes.
>>27420011Try Spec Ops: the line
>>27418697still don't know what you are talking about.
>>27425448Just look up Chatoyance... you would really be better off not knowing.
>>27399100You retarded son? Or just deaf and blind?
>>27424457He kept her alive. That's about the extent of care she got. He dragged her around to every settlement he could find, and at every stop he'd point out the terrors inflicted by the Empire and let the people punish her as they saw fit. It was mercy in the sense that he stayed his hand so that everybody could get a turn to make her suffer. She was mortified by the very thought of him for years to come. He didn't give his eye for her; she gouged it out when she made her escape.
For some reason, I mistook OP's pic for some fanart of The Boy Who Likes Berries And Cream
So are any of you familiar with William hope Hodgson's The Night Land?because this fucker right here invented grimdark
>>27419620Nope.In the second game he's absolutely chaotic evil, and it sort of retroactively carries over to the first game since he seems to have no qualms at all about massacring the Union troops. He's entirely willing and able to utterly and completely fuck the world in order to save Angelus. And then there's the fact that he seems to really, REALLY enjoy murdering dozens of people. He murdered Urick so hard that DEATH died instead. His kill count is in the tens of thousands. There is absolutely no way Caim is anything except evil.
>>27441327>implying the world didn't deserve to be destroyedCain was the hero they needed, but not the one they wanted.

>>27439296Kult is a horror setting with a bit of gnostic vibe. Basicly, in ages past, humanity was God's equal. Through trickery, we were brought low and trapped in The Lie, reality as we know it, one huge illusion to keep us from remembering our true power. Some time later, God fucked off for parts unknown. Now his servants keep us chained through a combination of "that's how it's always been" and serving their own desire for power. Hell also keeps on in a similar manner. Forces from both sides keep the people too focused on trivialities to question things much, and generally kill the shit out of anyone starting to realize how thing really work.Heaven's an empty ruin, and all we have to look forward after death is suffering, either in Hell proper, or our own personal Purgatories, where we are tortured until all traces of our indentities are purged, allowing us to move on to reincarnation.

Maybe not quite as hopeless as the most grimdark universes, but I have been rewatching/reading Claymore recently and it fits rather well.Last I checked 60-70% of the characters die, and all of the claymore ones (90%+ of the cast pretty much) are doomed to eventually turn into the demons they hunt or possibly be executed by their friends to prevent this. (unless they die in battle of course)These demons (yoma) also most likely killed/ate their entire family and possibly raped them after taking over the body of one of their siblings or parents. Such siblings/parents would be forced to watch through their eyes as they commit these acts.Survivors of such attacks are often thrown out into the wilderness by their village due to their contact with yoma. These yoma attacks are often setup on purpose by the Organization behind the claymores for the intent of abducting the child afterwards (due to people being fueled by hatred becoming more powerful soldiers, and noone caring about orphans) so they can be raised as weapons for the purpose of hunting more yoma. The entire continent is just a testing ground for these living weapons, which I assume are required to fight something more horrifying than yoma on the mainland, have not gotten far enough to discover what that thing is however.

Dark Souls holy shitworld's very soon going to be consumed by void regardless of ending choice, and we've already gotten a taste of what that does (Artorias)
>>27395959>My... what big boobies you have!
>>27386067The most grimdark of universes is any universe that incorporates the Christian conception of hell- infinite pain, for an infinite period of time, with no hope of any reprieve. No matter how bad things are in a universe without it, as long as there are only a finite number of people suffering finite pain, with only the most minuscule of hopes, it is still infinitely better than any universe where infinite pain is a possibility. It's simple utilitarianism.
>>27396303Oh like Watership Down
Pre ascension Madoka. The entire system literally runs on despair, in universe, and the while cosmology was carefully designed, again, IN UNIVERSE, to drive little girls over the edge of sanity, as an industrial process. It's pretty fucking grimdark.
>>27442072>Dat ending>F15 OUT OF FUCKING NOWHERE FUCK YOU DEMON BABIES AND SHIT AAAAAAAAHSeriously what the fucking fuckshit fuck damn shitfuck happened
>Ctrl f>No Wraith:The OblivionStep it up /tg/. You're dead. The Afterlife is broken. Your sorrow and regret bind you to the world of the living and help you defy death. Your own pain and madness is made manifest within your Shadow, who stops at nothing to bring you to Oblivion. The 'standard' life for a Wraith is to either slave away in a shitty job or fight for eternity, that's your reward in death, or end up as raw materials, soulforged into a chair or a weapon for some other poor cunt to wear, abuse or lose. Everyone is very aware that in the eyes of others, they're little better than raw materials. Souls of children and animals are soulforged on sight, since they cannot resist their shadows as much. The only 'good' end is to fully accept your death and meet Oblivion gracefully, if you can't, then your anguish manifests into one of the infinite hordes of spectres and other horrors that roll forth to consume all that is dead, then all that is alive in a wave of pain. It's not helping that all Wraiths are the unwilling and unwitting first line of defence in the World of Darkness, where demons, malfeans and outsiders creep into the realms of men, they often plough through sad ranks of conscripted women who died in childbirth, child soldiers and suicide bomb victims while the real soldiers cower away somewhere they think is safe. Some settings have greater suffering in sheer scale, like 40k, but when it comes to absolute bleakness, I think Wraith takes the cake.
>>27446423Edgy: the Tryhard doesn't count. White Wolf had turned into the dude who cuts his wrist and sings lullabies to freak others out by the time Wraith came out.
Most Grindark setting:Play Violence, but situate the game in Turku, Finland. It is a place where all the girls are beautiful, all the men are total assholes, everyone is hostile towards outsiders, and the most common passtime is spying on your neighbours.Whe you should use it: It is almost perfet setting for Violence. Turku is the only place where you can kill anyone you meet without feeling bad about it.
>>27446468>Edgy: the TryhardWouldn't Tryhard: The Edgy be a better title?
>>27386067Drakengard is definitely up there. Everything sucks, and if you exist you're likely to die meaninglessly and painfully.Personally, I would say I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream might be the darkest setting I know of.
>>27447422>I have no mouth and I must scream.Best for sheer cruelty. The adventure game makes it even more bleak.>Wraith: The OblivionA good combination of abject hopelessness against impossible odds as well as personal angst and cruelty.>Necronhita.A combination of the above, but with more dead children.
>>273860671984's probably not the most grimdark, but it's quite grim.
>ctrl + f>"earth 21">0 resultsLet me describe you Earth 2140.There's two factions. The Eurasian Dynasty, which controls all continents except for America. And the United Civilized States, which control the whole American continent. Most of the world is so irradiated that normal humans can't survive there. The ED is controlled by a Czar. The Czar doesn't like disobedience. So what did he do?He forcefully transformed the entire human population into cyborgs. This has the nice side-effect of allowing them to survive on earth's surface, but is mostly there to make them as controllable as machines.New cyborgs are created by building the artificial shell and cloning their rudimentary organs. The UCS isn't much better. Their people live peaceful lives of Brave New World, the president is elected at random and no president gives a fuck about ruling anymore because the advisor AI has proven to be competent enough on its own.Their armies consist of advanced robots, with the infantry looking like terminator rip-offs.Everything is automated and yet civilians can join the military. The reason? Their bots are controlled by small black boxes, suspiciously similar in size to human brains with some life support...So you have two dystopic regimes duking it out on an earth that has already been nuked to hell and back. And that's the first game of a trilogy. It's basically a small-scale version of Total Annihilation. And don't get me started on the dickhead aliens that let their weird-ass weapons lie around everywhere in the entire universe. They also had a gun trained on earth, hidden on the moon.
>>27386067Kult, it's not even a contest.
Detroid in DXHR.>Wipe out entire police force>No one gives a fuck in any way
>>27386605Narutaru was depressing as fuck too.
>>27449371I considered the opinions on Bokurano kind of overblown. It was very optimistic in tone and wasn't more cruel than real life.Kill or be killed - It's a reality that we like to avoid, but it's still there. Bokurano just made it into a supernatural construct. The only really bad part is the existence of Dung Beetle, for the person who takes that role. But then again, they can live normal lives if their side wins, iirc.
>>27449268But Kult isn't so bad if you just live the lie, right?
>>27442120>Cannibal who favors eating children>Blind pedophile>Perma-childThe giant cannibal babies who never open their eyes are actually a decent(albeit intentionally grotesque hurr) parallel to the Caim's party.I can't remember if they make any noises, but if they don't, you could even compare them to Caim and his silent, merciless slaughtering.More importantly, they're creepy as fuck. It's cosmic horror done right.>>27443289Is that you, Dragoon Quest QM?
>>27447359Nah, it would be Tryhard: The Edge
>>27451850They do make noises. They cry like babies, and when they eat they throw out some pretty visceral CRUNCH SLURP CRACK sounds.

World of Darkness, specifically for the Vampires. I don't think anyone leads a happy and fulfilling life in the Masquerade.
>>27451850It is not, I avoid quests usually. Is the guy running the dragoon quest inspired by Claymore or something? If he is then I will have to check it out.
>>27446377It's also canon given that Nier exists.
>>27452554There are two canon endings, one that leads to Drakengard 2 and one that leads to NieR.
>>27452505I believe he was. It died to lack of interest, though.
>>27440357ahh yes that one was quite depressing. And actually quite a cool setting in my opinion. That shit was written so long ago, makes you think about how people come up with something like this without being surrounded by other fantasy.
Who the fuck is this Caim guy everybody in this thread are wanking over?
>>27453861I'd tell you if you didn't have the attention span of a dead parrot.
>>27393413You can have a happy ending with Lost, too.You just have to fight, every day, to keep it, just like a good life in the real world entails.
>>27396745Man, remember when IMMINIENT OVERPOPULATION DISASTER was the big apocalyptic threat most people thought was most plausible?Well, probably not, it was a decade or two even before I was born, and I'm in the older end of the anons still around.Always a bit amusing in hind sight, though.
>>27453861The patron saint of killing everybody. He made a pact with a dragon for great power at the cost of his voice. Then he runs around as a mute and kills everybody who're not helping him kill people. By the end of the first game, he has personally killed more than ten thousand people. He's an enemy in the sequel. And as it turns out, people are terrified of him. Considering he kills Death at one point, their fears are sort of justified. The main characters actually decide to fight his dragon instead of him, because they feel that's the safer option. Bear in mind, his dragon is basically a nuke with teeth, and has been driven insane to the point of omnicidal rage. And fighting that is preferable to fighting Caim.
Has anyone read path of the incubus? > all the eldar factions have their strengths and weaknesses> the harlequins seek to unite these disparate groups for a shot at survival> Motley is met by the blankest of stares as he explains this concept to an aspect warrior40k: a setting where working together is a foreign concept to some of the most intelligent beings in the galaxy

I'm inclined to say Wraith: the Oblivion, though I'm a madman that thinks its mood is ultimatly hopeful.
>>27454278In theory you can help other people, and don't have to harm them. But you're personally pretty fucked almost every path you take. It's all a matter of perspective and expectations, really.(I'm sort of a madman about it, too)
>>27425448http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanFic/TheConversionBureau?from=MainIts My little pony, there it needed to be said.
>>27454323I see it as one giant metaphor for everyday life. Your main villain is essentially nihilism/apathy, you need things to be passionate about to stay alive, and things are the easiest if you trust other people and don't do the things that feed the self-destructive aspect of your psyche.
>>27446468Fuck off, Wraith is great and has an ultimately hopeful note.
>>27443289Claymores were designed to fight the Dragonkins on the main land. But its not grimdark anymore, the organization is desolved with almost all of its head members killed. All of the Abyssal ones are dead too. Now we just need to wait for Claire to go Super-Saiyan and fuck Presia's shit up and its happy ending for most people who's still alive.
>>27446377I wish they had left the ending at the screen that says "Tokyo, Japan" or whatever, and cut to credits right there. That would've been an even better "WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WITNESS" troll ending.
>>27454370Oh god this thing. It really shouldn't even begin to be taken as a setting. Now fallout equestria on the other hand, has some fantastic setting stuff. It's already a tabletop game.
