    89 KB Mini-Game Challenge Experiment Usually Random !FNrqD.IX2I!!YUH9KpxE1PY 09/19/08(Fri)15:36 No.2616690
    Okay smar/tg/uys and ca/tg/irls,

The other day Ewen showed me two micro-RPGs, one of his own devising. Considering the thread recently complaining about the lack of creativity here on /tg/, I'd issue out a call to arms to show /tg/ still isn't "just /b/ with minis and dice" with this challenge:

Make your own mini-system and show it off here in PDF format by the week.
    It can be about anything.
Don't worry too much about play testing, just come up with something that feel you can have fun with.
    Collaborations are fine.

By Sept 28th (next Sunday), post your project in PDF somewhere and link it on the board.

TL;DR: Prove the whiners wrong and get shit done.
    >> Usually Random !FNrqD.IX2I!!YUH9KpxE1PY 09/19/08(Fri)15:37 No.2616698

Hmm... well, i'm currently rewriting ArtifIce after completing the first proper playtest, so it couldn't hurt to try something like this.

Would it be okay if i based it off an already existing creation of mine (i.e. ArtifIce). I've had an idea knocking around for a type of introductory scenario minigame, about the very basic AI's computer labs have running around in quasi-darwinistic scenario's. a group of them become conscious, and have to work together to hit the top of the food chain (i.e. defeat all the other, dumb, program) and escape the lab server before the scientists push the reset button, possibly transferring from there into a full ArtifIce campaign...

Also, since I inadvertently inspired this stuff and I have webspace I'm not doing a whole lot with, I'd be willing to host stuff as well. Get Usually Random to send stuff my way if you want to go that route.

I'll try to get the next mini-RPG I'm working on to come after Food Fighters done by then, though it's going to be something disturbing.

Something like that, but it would be a little bigger, you can work with other people on it and it would be a full game. You could just make it a few pages, or what xxxxtreme streetluge did, and make a "do-it-yerself" booklet.

Any RPG or simple game design can do, so if you wanted to make some sort of "printable board/adventure game" that has players supply their own tokens, ala Cheapass, that's cool too.

The question isn't about the games being "good", just "done". We often worry about "quality", but I'm sure what gets completed will have some nice elements to it. This isn't the "write a a full GURPS campaign book on the visigoths" challenge.

Spending a few hours for a few nights each is enough to get a game together, check over and edit the text, see if things match up and make any final adjustments, especially if the game is going to be 3-6 pages long.

You can always revise it a little later if something goes FUBAR anyways.

So, out of curiosity... There's currently brewing, possibly out by the 28th:
    *a wargame-RPG thing
*some kind of horror system, based on Clock Tower/Haunting ground (did I get that right)?
    *a Persona 3-style-system, possibly d20
    *A triple-A system, all else a mystery
*a scenario/minigame for ArtifIce(did I get that right?), a game previously devised by the same guy
*Einherjar, which could be interpreted as a viking style of stuff like Hercules and such Greek myth (though that's my interpretation, not having read the material) and stylistically similar to Exalted/Valkyrie profile?
    *A few unnamed projects/interests.

About 7-8 mentioned at the moment. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. Also, might give some of us ideas for other stuff, yeah? I'll admit my interests are piqued by a few of these.

I'd guess on /tg/ getting like 10-20 people posting small projects, with a few bigger submissions.
    >> Anonymous 09/19/08(Fri)20:49 No.2618978

    >> Anonymous 09/19/08(Fri)20:55 No.2619011

Your right on the part concerning me and ArtifIce.

(For those who don't know, ArtifIce is a game where you roleplay as AI's. there's rough rules on the suptg site, but i'm doing a new set as we speak, so i wouldn't bother looking them up just yet)

    You're wrong. simple as that.
    >> Anonymous 09/19/08(Fri)20:55 No.2619012
If that's your criterion for success, you've got problems. We're doing this because it's a fun thing to do, which is the motivation most RPG designers have to have these days anyway.
    >> Lazy DM V 09/19/08(Fri)21:06 No.2619087
Also, technically getting pissed off at a game goes into the "caring" category. If noone cared about D&D, noone would've raged about 4th. You're caring about this project right now. It's okay, there's nothing wrong with that.
    >> Anonymous 09/19/08(Fri)21:10 No.2619108
Bullshit. I've done 4 or 5 games that /tg/ either cared nothing for or actively hated more powerfully than I could here. It wasn't fun.

Yeah, because creating an activity for a group that will never see the light of day is fun and totally productive! Shit, I could go play a video game if I wanted to do that, and it would involve a lot less stress.

Okay, fine, nobody cares in a way that does anything other than cause stress. Does that work for you?

Creating things helps you get better at creating things. It's an *exercise*. You don't take a creative writing class thinking you're going to come out with a published novel. If we get a session or two of fun gameplay out of it, then that'll be more than enough justification. If something eventually turns into a full published game, then great, but we'll have already gotten what we wanted out of this even if it doesn't.

Also, I know better than to worry over what Anonymous thinks about what I create, or about anything, really.

Basically, the player starts by battling to the death. A Valkyrie deems them worthy to transcend life and death and helps them in exchange for them giving service to the Gods. The main idea was a war between Nordic and Egyptian inspired pantheons.
Since you can kill someone by talking (Attacking Essence isn't just attacking with swords) politicking might be of interest.

Start by actually figuring out if you want to add something to improve your idea of the game or if you are just slapping on a random idea.

Mostly it goes through popular gaming systems and tries to give the pieces terms so that they can compare them to each other. Things such as a sanity system or HP system. It looks at things from a design standpoint instead of "OMG THIS IS HOW YOU ROLEPLAY IF YOU REMOVE THAT YOU RUIN THE GAME!" that a lot of neckbeards have, a good example is looking at DnD alignment as just a red team blue team dynamic. If you are on one side it "gives" you permission to kill the other. Its a bit dry but I found it an interesting look without the sacred cows attached.

I've made a few games that friends have played, and one that has overall been very loved. Back in highschool my group was all insane, so they helped me playtest my homebrewed boardgame (which was loved) and my homebrewed CCG (I drew and wrote a good 60 cards... than realized the basic mechanics were shit) along with other crazy shit. In college, I made a one shot zombie game using 3rd ed and the npc classes from the DMG as a base (this was before d20 modern or CoC d20 came out). I may have been pretty fucking lucky, but I don't think it's that uncommon to get gamers to try new shit out, if they trust you, or at least know you're funny.

I just don't see the "stress" bit you're talking about. A bunch of people, for a contest, make some quick game systems, share them around and look to see if they're mildly interesting, and then move on. Maybe some of them turn out great and several people play them, maybe they don't.

Nothing is lost except for a little time, so what harm is done? There's no stress there, as opposed to, say, arguing fiercely about 3E vs 4E or whatever.

I'm going to have to agree with you needing better friends. Hell, I need better friends now cause I rarely get any gaming going on at all, much less sweet homebrew. Course, my group I ran the zombie thing for (which I might post someday, just for kicks) was probably the best group ever. I could design a good fight and some fun NPCs, but they made the games come alive. Hell, considering the group in the zombie game was a cult leader, a pacifist (died horribly), a rookie cop and a cheerleader (died horribly), I think they were quite a unique bunch. I hope you find a group as good as that, cause damn, I think every gamer should.

Anyway, what's wrong with it being similar to a videogame???
    >> Anonymous 09/20/08(Sat)01:52 No.2620742
I don't make the games to please myself. It doesn't come easy to me, so there's stress there just making it. I do it so that I can please others, so that they can take the game and smile and say "Yeah, I like this" not "Wow, nice game you made!".

You made it seem like game design is as effortless as fingerpainting. You just want to whip them up, pass them around, go "huh, thats something" and move on. Wether anyone ever plays the game or cares doesn't matter. Whats the point?

This is true. YOU have to want to play the game. It has to be everything you've been wanting from a game, but doesn't exist. You want better rules for backing up a buddy in a fight, make that a corner stone of a system. You want a game where you can screw a buddy over for your gain, make that the game's theme. You want to make a limited card battle system that allows you to handle all disputes in a game in a rock/paper/scissors manner, make that. Just make the game you want.

Or don't, I'm too focused on the Metal Slug thing to care. Maybe after I get the run and gun game done, I can work on making EBA the RPG.

Oh yeah, and it's not easy to make a game. However, much like pimpin', it sure is fun. You have to be blown away by the system before others will give a damn, and maybe even not then. No one wants to help you cause until they understand it, they won't care. And they won't understand it til you finish it. The... contest? No, more like, the "event" next week is more about getting us to hammer out the last bits, or throw together something and present it. Maybe NONE of them will be played, ever. Maybe many will, or a few. But we love games, and we love the way a rule here and a rule there suddenly make things happen. It's pointless, yes. But that is because it is art.

Fuck you, I can write a game you can play while waiting for breakfast at a restaurant!

The Saltocracy has long been at war with the Pepper Republic. Their kings have met on the battlefield for one final duel, to solve this war once and for all.

Place your appropriate shaker up to 6" from the table edge. That 6" deep span is your home territory. If the shaker is knocked over, you lose. Whenever it gets hit with a projectile and doesnt get knocked over, your opponent can "shim" it. They can grab a sugar packet (flat, not folded) and place it under the corner of your shaker. Multiple shims make it really easy to knock over.

Now, grab a cup of non-dairy creamer (you know, those little thimble things). Place it upside down in your home territory, and balance a spoon on top of it. This is your people's soup spoon, their bread and butter, your industry. As long as it is up, you get a build action and an attack action each turn. If it is knocked down, take the spoon and the creamer off the table, and you only get an attack or a build action each turn.
    >> Anonymous 09/20/08(Sat)02:52 No.2621065

    Build Action:
Place 2 packets of jam or a cup on non-dairy creamer in your home territory from either your home territory or the table.

    Attack action:
Grab a sugar packet from the table, or a packet of jam/non-dairy creamer from your home territory, and place it against your table edge. Flick it at the opponent.

    The Forkapult:
You may choose to construct the forkapult for a build action. Stack 2 jam packets from the table in your home territory, and balance a fork on it. You may launch jam packets from the table instead of taking an attack action. If your forkapult gets knocked down, you cannot rebuild it. Remember, the angle of attack helps greatly on knocking over shakers.

    The knife:
The knife is a valuable defense. It can be placed anywhere on the table for a build action, but once placed it cannot be moved.

    The Napkin:
The napkin is a good defense against ground attacks. You can place it anywhere on the table for a build action, but you must remove it 3 turns later.

    The bottles:
If you have bottles of tabasco/ketchup, place them in the middle of the table. If you hit one, you can shim it. If you manage to knock it over, you can place it in your home territory. You may then, as an attack action, roll it at your opponent. Whether it hits or misses, remove it from play if it is used in an attack.

First one to knock over the opposing shaker wins. If no one does so by the time the food arrives, the person with the most shims under their opponent's shaker wins.

I'm the Wargame-RPG idiot. Currently thinking about more or less refluffing (and changing certain mechanics) to turn D&D (E6 variant) into a game of mercenary units. HP is how many mans you have, levels in various classes (up to 6) represent the distribution of forces, probably needs some retraining rules though.

This can lead to MIGHTAY HEREOS if you roll 1HP, since then you have one guy who goes around kicking arse, whereas the barbarian horde who rolled a 12 are individually weaker but, well, hordier. Of course, the wizard (or up to 4 of them...) can slaughter d4 a round with magic missiles, or put an entire company to sleep with a word.

This really wouldn't work as PvP. Glad I was thinking of PvM play...

I need ideas for a magic system. Tell me what you think about this.

Players start with three magic skills with three enhancement slots each. Each enhancement is bought with Skill Points, and each enhancement takes up a certain amount of slots. I'm thinking there will be about 10 or 15 enhancements each, mostly things like slowing enemies, stopping enemies, doing extra damage, having an elemental type, and things like that.

Sort of a cross between a simplified Tri-Stat way of things, and BBSW (Yes, that game)'s system of things being (X X X) and (- - -) for advantages and disadvantages.

The set-up would be something like:
    Skill 1 (Dragon Render) Spirit
    Ranged (X), Bane (Dragon) (X X)

Basically, it's a Spirit based ranged attack that deals Spirit+1 level of damage, and deals double damage to dragons.

The same. We collaborate on different projects. Ewen has a tough time finishing things he works on, so he's starting a series of micro-games to get in the habit of getting shit done.

I decided to follow suit, and felt getting more creative stuff on /tg/ would kill two birds with one stone.

If you're involved in this project, You're not "working for me", at most I'd be collaborating with Ewen on giving games server space, put together a collected PDF for the people who can't make them or any games that would be too small by themselves (thus the e-mail address is displayed) and promotion to other gaming communities when we're done so others can enjoy our work.

I may be joining in late, and I may not be able to produce much of a good product, but I think I'll join in with some sort of Mecha Musume or Strike Witches based RPG.

I'm at a loss for central mechanics, so I might just co-opt some other rules-light system or mutate it or some other idea a bit to get things properly functioning. The general idea is to have something where it's fast and easy to play and make characters, and one can easily describe fancy dogfighting or whatever else with relative ease. There'd also be a focus on roleplaying vaguely military slice of life stuff, when not flying around.

If I go with a straight Strike Witches route, there's the oddities such as everyone technically using magic and not wearing pants. If I don't then there's no magic, and less of a probable explanation for it all.

    >> Anonymous 09/21/08(Sun)14:49 No.2632486
That's a pretty good idea, actually. I'm more worried about character creation and mechanics. It needs to be flexible enough to cover different vehicles (although I'll probably focus on aircraft out of personal preference, and your specific vehicle is a matter of appearance and no real mechanical impact).

I may also make some simple "air combat" situational bonuses, such as approaching an enemy with the sun to your back, or various basic aerobatic maneuvers. Otherwise, dogfighting is likely going to be handled by a single check, and whoever wins describes what happens during that round.

Hm, since I'm going for fast and loose with an emphasis on player creativity and rolepalying over combat (because it's hopefully as much fun to just goof around in a pseudo-military setting), I'm not quite sure what to do about the actual rules. Or character stats, although a few to indicate various aircraft abilities might be an idea. Speed, maneuverability, airt to air, air to ground, etc.

I never quite figured out what Stability did, though, so I might omit it. The rest re obvious, in a pair of attack strengths, a defense value, how fast you get around, and how good you are at fancy flying.

I'm almost tempted to do pure Strike Witches so everyone's stuff comes from magic and they get some weird unique ability they're particularly good at, although this could be done for generic aircraft as well, just for the heck of it.
    >> Anonymous 09/21/08(Sun)15:12 No.2632617

Stability affects how prone the plane is to stalling. And don't do pure strike witches, I think that story is retarded.
    >> Anonymous 09/21/08(Sun)15:20 No.2632679
From someone who has no context, the first three are obvious, the next is Maneuverability, the next is susceptability to weather, damage, etc. The last is armor, which is really wtf in modern planes.

Alright then. I thought stability had to do with stall-outs, but wasn't sure. I might use it as an all-purpose "limit" in dogfighting, where it relates to how readily you can mess up in some way. Because you're not an airplane, you're a cute girl (or guy, let's be equal-opportunity here) with airplane parts. So, stalling out might be one thing, but just losing track of a target, or zigging instead of zagging, or blacking out are other random options.

And, my biggest motivation to stay away from the witches is that I prefer jets. Maybe I should expand even further to shmups and allow for really odd tricks? Damnaku, wave cannons, the typical "fight aliens" plot, etc. Hmm...maybe this will be good for my old "ruined Earth, people live in space stations and drop planetside to fight each other and look for relics of the past" scenario?
    >> Anonymous 09/21/08(Sun)15:26 No.2632723

I'd like to restate my previous suggestion: That mechagirls (mechaguys, whatever) are physical representations of the spirit of a military unit/hardware, invested with the hopes and prayers of those that use the hardware/fight in the unit. As such, the wars these mecha musume fight aren't the "IRL" wars, they fight in some kind of metaphysical space where the representations of different warring factions' armies clash with each other. You can go with that, or you can go with some kind of scenario where humanity has learned how to summon military elementals into the real world so that they can fight instead of actual people.

That's actually not a bad idea at all. Characters could still have their random slice of life noncombat stuff and bizarre Ace Combat war storyline... Oh, superweapons are so going to need to be a potential fixture of the system. Possibly also at least rumors about "legendary" aces. Von Richtoffen, Mobius One, Solo Wing, and other big names...

The smups! set-up would likely be much more random and with little or not real backstory. The characters just are, or they're cyborgs. Or still personified aircraft, they're just fighting something other than each other.

Let's see. So, we've got some Ace Combat inspired stats, now I need a basic mechanic. I might add a second attribute set (skills, or whatever). and a list of random attributes that players can either roll or invent to add little qualities to their characters, so they could already be an ace, or have other mechanics-unimportant perks. I'm tempted to use a dice pool system, but those can be slow on resolution, so maybe something very simple about stat ratings adding to a roll would be a wiser decision?
    >> Anonymous 09/21/08(Sun)15:46 No.2632837

How about this: Every character has a number of attributes, like in Maid RPG, that determine what stereotype he/she falls under. Those attribute in turn affect your combat stats, so you'd be better at fancy maneuvers if you were Cool, for instance. You could also have something like Stress Explosions or Limit Breaks where the character can do extraordinary stuff when a certain gauge has been filled up (like an Ace gauge that fills by doing certain things, affected by what stereotype you are. If you're a childhood friend of another character you gain Ace points by protecting that character, for example).

I really like this idea. It's a good way to make characters interesting, and to reward noncombat roleplaying. You gain points you can spend on being awesome in (or out of) a fight for doing things that entertain everyone, or make particular sense for the character.

Some archetypes off the top of my head:
Knight: Honor and pride are important to you; you're noble and refuse to attack targets who can't fight back.
Soldier: An expert at reading the tide of battle.
Mercenary: Ruthless. In it for the money, no matter where it comes from. Even civilian targets are fair game.
Cool: You always keep a cool head. This doesn't mean you're emotionless, just that you rarely let your emotions get the better of you.
Hotblooded: You're impulsive and tend to go in with a rebel yell, no matter the odds. And come out on top.
Ace (of Aces): Smooth, skilled, and capable of turning the tide of any battle. Enemies fear you, allies respect you.
Veteran: You've seen many battles, and even if you're an old prop plane, you can best a jet with intimate knowledge of ability and more dirty tricks than are in the book.
    >> Anonymous 09/21/08(Sun)16:14 No.2633034

Let me elaborate on Ace points. In Super Robot Wars games, the characters gain Will points they can use to make powerful attacks. Each character regains Will based on their character traits. There were different ways to gain or lose Will:

    * When you shoot down an enemy
    * When you hit an enemy
    * When you are hit by an enemy
    * When you miss an enemy
    * When an enemy misses you
    * When an ally is hit
    * When an ally is shot down
Etc. This is sort of the way I envision Ace points to work. Different archetypes would have Gain conditions and Lose conditions. Like: a Hotblooded character would gain Ace when shooting down an enemy, or when she gets hit by an enemy. She would lose Ace when missing or seeing an ally get shot down. A Veteran character would lose Ace when hit ("Huh!? They managed to hit me?!") and gain in when hitting an enemy. Etc.
    >> Anonymous 09/21/08(Sun)16:30 No.2633144
Ace Combat has lots of dakka-range dogfighting, where armour comes into play, and most planes can take more than one missile. I think it's usually two, or one special missile... and planes carry dozens of standard ones, so yeah.

But those are GREAT war drama sterotypes! I say at most add a few general anime stereotypes, but these are exactly the type of thing that get me in that fighter pilot mood.

I came up with the following for my Metal Slug Setting game, it might be an interesting mechanic to add to yours with some modification:

Friend Points (FP): You value your comrades in arms, and aid them with your actions, words and attitude. You can add FP to any roll you make to take a hit or provide cover fire for an ally (but only allies, not protected targets). You may spend a FP to give an ally a +1 to any roll. You may also use it to inspire a friend on in the face of death, represented by healing 1d10x10 of your ally’s hit points. You may only aid an ally with an FP once per turn, but you may aid as many allies each turn as you have FP.

Course, you'd scale that healing and other benefits based on how what is average for your game (starting characters in MSS have 600 hp, so even a full heal of 100 hp is minor). Even if you don't use any of the specifics, I think a war drama situation should have some good rules for allies backing eachother up.

Think of A New Hope, the battle over the Death Star. Luke, for all his force and shit, is getting dogged by a TIE fighter. Biggs, his childhood friend, just doesn't have an opening to back him up, or lost track of him in the battle, leaving Luke totally fucked. Suddenly, Wedge comes in and fucks that TIE fighter straight to hell, and Luke knows he has a comrade he can trust with his life. That is the kinda shit you want out there in the skies.

Dogfighting is tricky, because it really is best done outside of tabletop. Being that my idea is for fast play with freedom to describe what's going on, I'll likely make a rule of tbumb for situational bonuses, plus examples. And have a list of combat air maneuvers a character can take and associated bonuses, penalties, or effects. They might be general, such as "break away" or specific, such as "Split S" or "barrel roll". I'll probably look through Wikipedia for ideas.

Well, technically, the "barrel roll" in starfox is not a proper one. A proper barrel roll involves pulling up in the stick wile also preforming a roll. It is a way to shake missiles (in ace combat), but I'll probably avoid it for the very reason you've pointed out.

My game is probably going to be more in the vein of generic mecha musume than Strike Witches, but I see no reason to disallow rampant lesbianism. Adding rules for creating new AI's, independent programs, viruses, designing drones and other machines, coordinating large scale battles, high level play (i.e. planetary domination).

Sorry, but I think I'll leave romance or a lack thereof out of things, although I might make a few possible traits potential for them. Older Sister, Wingman, Lesbian, Pervert, etc, etc.

At the very least, being friendly with your fellow squadron members, if not "friendly" will be a good idea if I use the friendship points stuff that was suggested earlier as a potential way to influence things and encourage some amount of military camaraderie, in that you have a pool of stuff for yourself (Ace points) and another that you can only use to help your allies (friend points). Obviously, you can't regain friend points without somehow working with your friends.
