You are Ssen, a Lamia raised by a human Paladin who adopted you after killing the ones who birthed you. You are grown now, and Father has passed on. After a great deal of work, you have become a Paladin like your Father, and now take up his duties. You are accompanied by your best friend from childhood, the insect druid Tricia; Mage, a magic user who ran away from his family of cannibal raiders known as the Ghouls (Yes, his name is Mage. It was his idea); Persephone, a 22-year old thief/ex-guerllia fighter (She goes by Peri), and Mari, a 13-year old prodigy scholar/now sniper, who has her mind and soul trapped within Peri's body; and Lea, a deeply religious musician/martial artist, trained by her father, a famous trainer for arena fighters, she's covered from her mouth down in bandages to hide the horrific state her body has become thanks to the 'cures' that saved her from cancer.Your journey continues...Opening theme song (NEW for Season 4!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3FKgL7YVFghttp://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Lamia%20Quest1d4 chan page w/battle stats: http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Quest:Lamia_Daughter_Quest
You journey north has been exceptionally eventful. The orc Tisgut, scout for the Red Wolf tribe, has returned your rescue, generosity, and hospitality by attempting to take food from your group, drawing one of the Ice Abominations to your camp, and taking you to an orc tribe that's in the middle of a clan war. Then charging headlong into said war.Perhaps that's being a bit disingenuous. The Ice Thing was just bad luck. Also, he didn't know that the Hawk Tribe was planning on ambushing and enslaving/killing all of the members of this part of the Rat Tribe. Also, the Rat Tribe was fairly hospitable, for orcs, and gave you shelter and warmth, which is vital for survival out on the Tundra Plains. But either way, the Hawk Tribe has surrounded the Rat Tribe encampment, 25 warriors inside, and 50 warriors outside. Also, they made the rather rude statement to Tisgut that he was their guest-hostage and would be traded back to Red Wolf. Also, that you and the Dawnchasers were now Hawk Property. Tisgut is many things, but he is NEVER a hostage, he is NOT a Thing, and NO ONE insults Red Wolf guests. (Which apparently you are, as well as being referred to as the 'Snake Tribe.')Tisgut's response to the ultimatum that if he behaves calmly he will be treated with respect, and promptly returned to his tribe?A drawn sword and a charge with a very succinct verbal argument:"GWWWWUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"
Sweet Lamia quest is a tad early. Also I have an idea on how to go cloudkill w/ minimal kills:Get mage to do some sort of filter spell on everyone then saturate the area in cloudkill. Then amplify your voice and tell everyone to settle the fuck down or die a really painful death via cloudkill.
>>25916921Cloudkill takes multiple factors into account, not least of which being wind and atmospheric conditions. And since I don't think we've made a concerted effort to weaponize this stuff, I don't think Mage has a spell to protect specific people from its effects. Which doesn't mean we can't ask, but the alternative to him having it ready would be him making it up on the spot, which would likely take some time and would be a big risk.So for the time being, cloudkill may be off the table.
>>25916921We need to somehow draw the hawks away from the rats before we can use any kind of cloudkill- the history of mage inventing spells on the spot in the past has been near universally lethal.I say we punch right through the shaman and her fighting men, get behind them, and force them to either focus on us or get killed off from behind.
>>25917048it'd be quite tricky to use it effectively, yeah. We need to be extremely careful with it, if we use it at all. Though I don't know how we're beating 75 orcs without it, unless they break and run easier than we think.
>>25917048Echo did say we could use cloudkill without consequence in the last thread. Also 75 fucking orcs.
>>25917173I am here to emphasize>couldWe have to be careful to not also kill the rats. Or worse, our friends. Also, if we can resolve this without killing all the hawks, well, that's mercy shown and an enemy that might be a friend one day.
>>25917048Just so you know, Mage's plan is to generate a massive windstorm to negate the chances of the Hawk archers filling you all full of arrows. This will effect the Cloudkill. Also, as before, to generate enough of all three poisons and mix them together within yourself so you excrete the cloudkill will take six rounds, less if you make a 14+ roll. You'll be able to make a single action while you do that, so one attack with Beacon or an attack with your tail, not both. Also, the Hawk orc soldiers have a single long heath bar, which will drop dice as you wipe them out.The Hawk Warchief and the Shaman have their own separate health bars. The Rat orcs will be helping, but there's a 3-5 ratio between the two clans, favoring the Hawks.Tisgut and the Rat Shaman are allies in this fight.Any other information you would like?
I'm going to have to say that this is a perfect time to use cloudkill.
>>25917194>any other information you would like? Can I have a vague formation of how troops and noncombatants are placed? I want to draw up a little MSpaint battlefield sketch.
>>25917194First off can Mage keep people from inhaling cloudkill via filtration? Secondly the orcs have symbols on them right, like the ratskulls and feathers. Mage said they were being used for the shaman magic, so could he use them to apply that spell?
>>25917221>Can I have a vague formation of how troops and noncombatants are placed? I want to draw up a little MSpaint battlefield sketch. It's a circular ambush, there's two rings of orcs, archers behind bladesmen, surrounding the camp. In the center is the war party, they're in a triangle pattern pointing towards the mass of Rat orcs in the center. The Hawk warchief is at the tip of the triangle, and the shaman is being protected in the center. The rats are in three small circular blobs. One facing the war party. One in front of the civilian tent, and the third by the chief's tent, also protecting the shaman. You, the Dawnchasers, and Tisgut are off to the side of the triangle by your own tent.
we could probably have mage shape the windstorm so it dost go into the rat settlement, that would wipe out the hawks outside.
>>25917263>First off can Mage keep people from inhaling cloudkill via filtration? Secondly the orcs have symbols on them right, like the ratskulls and feathers. Mage said they were being used for the shaman magic, so could he use them to apply that spell? No, he can alter the winds he's summoning, along with the shaman. He CAN use the fetishes that the tribes are wearing as targets for some wide area spells, he could try and haste all the orcs wearing Rat charms, for example.
>>25917194Well, I'm going to go ahead and give my views on the general strategic and tactical situations. The arrows can be negated two ways: preventing them from finding their mark via windstorm (screening), or by moving the fight indoors (terrain management). A 3-5 ratio with bombardment out of the question favors the defenders. My suggestion would be to have Mage do a windstorm screen while we gank the Hawk shaman and warchief. We have the advantage of being inside a village, so once the smaller force closest to us is wiped out the force outside will have to come in closer. When that happens all we need to do is focus on where the attackers might bottleneck and attack there. Victory without using Cloudkill or taking ourselves out of the fight for several rounds. So my only question is how defensible is the Rat village?
>>25917338Isn't haste not supposed to be used on humanoids? Could it be cranked up a bit to overwork their bodies and disable them?
Allright, made a little terribly drawn aid for the fight.Anyway, my plan stays the same. We bust through the primary triangle hawk formation, and then get to eating them one by one from behind. They've spread their forces out, with the exception of one concentration. If we take that down, then we're individually superior against the remaining forces unless they change strategy and clump up on us, inviting a friendly fire free cloudkill.
>>25917343>So my only question is how defensible is the Rat village? It's a collection of hide tents, a penned corral of hind deer, and a bunch of fire pits.
>>25917332yeah, if we just use the windstorm to keep EVERYTHING out of the settlement, we are free to use poison on the outside.
>>25917508Move the triangle inside the tent ring
>>25917435And basically burst the Hawk tribe's hearts?Sounds like a solid plan, so long as it's preceded by gank the shaman.
>>25917605Well I was hoping for a less lethal route, but geeking the mage for her foci is probably a needed thing
>>25917574Done and done.
>>25917631Geek the mage is our universal starting plan.Whether or not she is killed or KOed really depends on how easy she goes down.
>>25917653That's about right.Any other information needed?
>>25917546So in other words, not at all. The fire pits could be used as foxholes if they were big enough, but that wouldn't be sufficient. >>25917548Rotating around an eye would work to keep arrows from hitting their targets, but the gas would need a different trick. Maybe moving higher-altitude air down and outward, pushing gas away from the camp in all directions?
>>25917670Can we use haste for a non-lethal KO on the orcs by overworking their systems?
We might want to go a bit crazy on killing our enemies, like what we did to the undead thing int the druid cabin. A sufficently skillful or gory kill may weaken the morale of the Hawk orcs and force them to retreat or rout if we kill a higher ranked or very strong orc.
>>25917680from what I remember it's a sinking gas, so that would probably work.>>25917670I can't think of any more information I want that wouldn't be metagaming. Like "what's the childhood fear of all those orcs"
>>25917548Yeah, this seems pretty reasonable. Get everyone into the eye of the storm, spray cloudkill into the storm, and then let the wind distribute it.
>>25917694that's why I've said now for the third time we should start by tearing into the orc-triangle. It's got their leader AND shaman, and we can get off a beacon shine in there to further the effect, and we can't use the gas until we get rid of them anyway since they're actually inside the rat camp.
>>25917722Geeking the mage also gives us access to magically effect the other hawk orcs with the feathers the shaman has.
>>25917697How would that not work? Heavier than air gasses can be blown around from place to place by even a relatively light breeze.
>>25917756>so that would probably workI said it would probably work. Literally. It's a heavier than air gas, which means we could push it around without it floating up and being caught in the downdraft of fresh air that the rats need to breathe.
>>25917753You're cunning. I wonder what mage can do with that. Since it's a stalking spell, he can at -least- make all the orcs polkadot pink.
>>25917812the stalking spell was ended. The feathers act like mage's staff only suckier.
>>25917829I assumed it was like, non-expended reagents or something. Whatever, either way.

Still, the Hawks might have given up too much for too little. The Hawks resume their assault. Though they're still not getting any traction with the arrows. You see that only some of the arrow men are firing, others are drawing out hand to hand blades. The Rats will be VERY outnumbered when that happens. Also, your group of fellows is still giving you problems.

>>25921213We may want to be intimidating them. These are bloodlust-driven orcs in the heat of battle. Nothing but soul-crushing fear is going to break them, I think. I suggest cackling loudly, claiming to be some manner of killing wind, and suggesting they find mercy on the ice.

Anyway, we're already helping the rats out, so let's get moving through the hawk's people as fast as possible. Starting with passing by the hawk shaman. If we pass over them quickly, they might simply be wounded, and not killed. Maybe. I've no idea.
>>25921364>>25921395I agree. She's sharp as a tack and clearly knows Orcish warfare better than we. So i say we follow her command with a touch of Dawnchaser flair. Why don't we dive and dart through the horde, tripping up a dense bundle of Hawks as we murder them with our gas?
Rolled 16, 13 = 29>>25921364The rats are hitting a wall.Tisgut has had ENOUGH. With a scream he shoulder checks the warchief, he allows the Hawk orc's sword to cut into his upper arm, and then he places a hand on the hawk warchief's shoulder, and then using it as leaverage forces his blade upwards, inwards, through, and then he shoves hard with his hand. The warchief's head flies one way, and his body goes the other. He belts out a mighty roar and grabs the head and holds it up for all to see. >>25921554well, they could. If they had some longspears. It's why I fear mass combat so.
Rolled 2>>25921449The orcs start to run. The warchief is dead, and the rats refuse to die...plus there's a monster who causes death just by her presence, and one seriously SERIOUSLY pissed off orc from Red Wolf. There is nothing here but more death, and the Rats will give no slaves, no tribute, nothing, just a burnt ground and the few left will die when the night winds come.So they run. They have no choice. To stay and fight is death, and orcs honor strength, but there's a difference between strength and stupidity.Of course, there are always those who refuse to run. A fifth of the hawks that are fighitng the rats remain. They stay because they choose to, to prove that they aren't cowards, to let their fellows escape, or that they knew that this would be their last raid and wanted to go out like warriors.Still it's seven against eighteen. Also, the ones you're fighting, some turn and run, but at the screams of the shaman, some stay. It seems that bitch doesn't want to go down without a fight.

You see red runes start to cover her flesh. These aren't like the ones on Tisgut though. >>25921685suicide explosive runes.

>>25921735oh, also good thinking. We took a hit, which is a beacon charge, had a few from fighting orcs... I dunno.
>>25921685The Hawk Shaman continues to chant though the lighting bolt, and through Tricia's slice that rips open her stomach, spilling her guts out on the dirt. She hits the ground, bleeding out...but she's still chanting. Peri looks at the runes and the chanting orc, she spins on her heel and runs, only slowling down slightly as the last Hawk hits her with his blade, she still runs.Lea also bolts from the shaman.Mage has already been running since Tricia gutted the orc.The two last hawks aren't running, they haven't looked at the Shaman yet. They're trying to figure out to either attack you or Tisgut. The shaman's chanting continues, even as she bleeds out, and her runes glow brighter still.

>>25922037We've done harder beforegranted they were with a bow.... but still
"Tricia, Tisgut, RUN!" You shriek and streak away, keeping away from the others.Tisgut and the Shaman take off, and you see the Rats running, taking the women and children that were not fighters with them. Tricia finally shifts her arms and (now you notice) her eyes back to normal and takes off. You're all clear when the runes go off. You're all knocked to the ground from the impact."Everyone okay?" Tricia groans as she gets up. "Ssen?""I wanna go home." Mage says. "And don't get near Ssen, she's still covered in that poison gas stuff.""Holy shit." Peri says."I don't know why I'm even surprised that we helped cause that size of a crater." Lea says. "Ssen, do you know how to stop...oozing?"
if killing the shaman would ruin the spell at this point I don't think peri would be running, if we want to try and stop it our best bet is using beacon, followed immediately by using its dispel magic function.

Rolled 4>>25923558"Relax, I'm a paladin. The hawks tried to take us as slaves."
>>25923558resist the urge to roll our eyes at the rock"They didn't send anyone and I do not take orders from them. I came of my own desire and I found your tracks. Who are you and what is your quarrel with the Rats?"
>>25923558"I guess I'm accompanying a member of the Red Wolf tribe, but I'm working for what's left of the Citadel Kingdom. We call ourselves the United Free Kingdoms."We could also channel Tron: "I fight for the Things!"
>>25923558"No, just a paladin trying to do the Lights work where I can."Hold out our medal thing... I cannot remember the word. "If you're from the Citadel lands I'm sure you know what this is."If not, well... It means I'm not from around here or play by the local Orc rules."If you want it. I can offer you protection. You wont be salve to me or anyone back at the Rat Camp, I'll make sure of that."Eh...
>>25923677medallion. Pendant. Either work.
>>25923701Thank you. My brain drew a bloody blank writing that up.
>>25923558"I'm what I send. If you come with me, you will be free. You're not going to die. We have food and medical supplies as well. Oh, and the Ice Sea wont kill you, although you will wish it had.
>>25923677Also this. We need to hold our Calgio Clarus symbol to show them that we truly mean no harm.
>>25923478Go to bed Maya.>>25923558Holy symbol, hold it out so they can see it.
>>25923558"You're attempting to menace an 800 hundred pound snake woman with a Rock." Throw your head back and laugh. "I like that. Shows spirit."
>>25923796"Don't tell anybody that though. They all think I'm like, 750."
"They didn't send anyone and I do not take orders from them. I came of my own desire and I found your tracks." You say. "I'm accompanying a member of the Red Wolf tribe, but I'm working for what's left of the Citadel Kingdom. We call ourselves the United Free Kingdoms."So where were you guys from? Citadel? Bronze Peak?""Windy Star." The man says."Never heard of it." You say."Your orcs destroyed it!" The woman snaps. "The Rats! They kept coming back, again, and again, and again....until they broke us and we ran...then the Boar came and their wolves. The Rats took EVERYTHING and left us to DIE!""Well, I am a Paladin of His Light." You hold out your Medallion. "If you come with me, you will be free. You're not going to die. We have food and medical supplies as well."I can offer you protection. You wont be salve to me or anyone back at the Rat Camp, I'll make sure of that. I'd like you to travel with me, until I head down south. It's less harsh there."The woman looks at the man. He looks at her for a moment."We can't trust her...she's a monster." The Kid says. "There's people up on the Ice. You've both seen them! My parents wouldn't lie.""The Ice Sea won't kill you, although you'll wish it had." You say.The Kid pulls on the man and woman's clothes. "She's lying. My Parents are waiting for you...trust me...we're safe on the ice."
I wonder if we have anyway to make fire right now...
>>25923910"You've no reason to trust me, true. I won't follow you onto the ice, if that's what you choose. I simply need to offer you the chance of a good life, and hope you take it."
>>25923910"If I am a monster to you, that which you will find on the ice will be nothing but nightmare incarnate. You've but a rock between the three of you and even if you had a hundred of the finest soldiers you can imagine they would be nothing against the foul thing the controls the ice. Please let me help you."
>>25923910"Please,do not go to the ice. Were I you, I would kill myself with that stone before going onto the ice. The things that live there are...things darkness and death"
>>25924015Seems a bit unpaladiny
>>25923910"For one thing, they aren't my Orcs. I'm a visitor here. For another, I haven't been here long, but I've seen what the Ice does to people. And I don't want that to happen to you. Please. I can help you if you just let me."
>>25924015>>25924039I don't like it either, but just because it doesn't sound right for nebulous reasons. I have terrible constructive criticism.
>>25923910You know that kid is most likely a 'Thing...'Ugh... Wish there was a easy way to tell...
>>25924094well, there's that, or the kid's parents lied to him about a magic land to the north where they'd be free. You know, to lessen the unbearable harshness of a life of slavery.
>>25924094>>25923910magic vision on the kid? Something seems to be up
>>25923910"I may be a lamia, but I am also a Paladin of His Light, and the current head of the Order of the Caligo Clarus. I speak only the truth as I know it."
"For one thing, they aren't my Orcs. I'm a visitor here. For another, I haven't been here long, but I've seen what the Ice does to people. And I don't want that to happen to you. Please. I can help you if you just let me." You say. "I know you've no reason to trust me, true. I won't follow you onto the ice, if that's what you choose. I simply need to offer you the chance of a good life, and hope you take it." You say."If I am a monster to you, that which you will find on the ice will be nothing but nightmare incarnate. You've but a rock between the three of you and even if you had a hundred of the finest soldiers you can imagine they would be nothing against the foul thing the controls the ice. Please let me help you.""She doesn't mean it." The kid says. "My parents told you that we're safe. Yes, there's animals and beasts out there...but nothing THAT horrible." She tugs on the woman's shirt again. "You have to come with me.""I'm sorry." The man says. "Our friends have risked too much...they've been searching for us, and...and we can't let the girl walk home alone in THIS! Thank you for the offer but...no...Red Wolf keeps human slaves too, and Rats take and take and take." He shakes his head. "The kid's parents are waiting for us. I'd rather chance the unknown than the orcs."
>>25924119>magic vision on the kid? Something seems to be upNothing magic about the kid.Heat vision's the same for all three. They have heartbeats, body heat, all of them are a bit lower than normal, but they're in the tundra so...yeah.
>>25923910Use our heat vision, does the child register as normal or as a void(ice).
>>25924180"There's terrible ice things up north. I really don't do cold well, so I can't follow, especially not alone. So, if you insist, here. You'll need something better than a rock."Give them our skinning knife. We've not used that since we got claws anyway."If any of you folk knew how to use a bow, I could lend you that too. I'm sorry I can't do more to help, and I hope the light is with you. Bring fire, you'll need it."
>>25924180"You wouldn't be chancing it with unknown Orcs."You be chancing it with me. I swear by The Light and as Paladin you will not go back to being a slave or any other such thing so long as I'm around."There is nothing but death to the north. Creatures that even give me pause."Is there nothing I can do or show you to convince the three of you to come with me instead of risking your lives like this?"I really have no idea what angle we should be playing at right now.
>>25924180"The Unknown WILL kill you and the Orcs won't bother you. I won't allow it.">>25924275We need our bow
>>25924180"I am sorry that is your choice. May his light preserve you from the things that dwell on the ice."
>>25924292I like this one. though, we don't know for SURE there's nothing but death out there.I mean, there -might- be some super secret human ice men. But I don't think so.
>>25924180"..All right, but heed this word of advice. The monsters on the ice hate Fire. Don't stop to rest without starting one if you value your life."
>>25924322True... But odds are very bad that it is a super secret human ice men base. And considering that everyone and there mother told us not to go north or near the Ice Sea...
>>25924180"Well, it's your choice. May His Light be with you."Go back to camp. They don't trust us, being pushy about it will just make them trust us less, I don't really see a good way of proving it to them.
>>25924180"You are not chancing the unknown, because I'm telling you what fate awaits you if you listen to this child who knows NOTHING of the true threats that face you. On the ice you will find nothing but Death and Dispair wrapped in Cold and Darkness. If you prefer that fate to trusting in the word of a Paladin, then I can see that I've lost already.""I will pray for you, and if we meet again after the Ice takes you I swear I will release your souls quickly."
"The Unknown WILL kill you and the Orcs won't bother you. I won't allow it." You say. "You be chancing it with me. I swear by The Light and as Paladin you will not go back to being a slave or any other such thing so long as I'm around."There is nothing but death to the north. Creatures that even give me pause. Please, come with me."The woman and the man look at each other. The woman holds the child close and shakes her head. The man looks at you and shakes his head. You sigh "I am sorry that is your choice. May His Light preserve you from the things that dwell on the ice. I really don't do cold well, so I can't follow, especially not alone. So, if you insist, here. You'll need something better than a rock."You take out a skinning knife and hold it out to him, handle first. He cautiously steps forward, and quickly grabs the knife away. He seems a little startled, but he nods his head at you."Thank you." He says. The kid and the wife look very unhappy."Don't talk to it." The woman says. "Come on." She pulls at the man's shoulder."Yes. We have to go. My parents are waiting." The kid says. They walk north towards the Ice.You shrug and turn to go back to the others. You walk for about ten minutes, when you hear a shriek of terror back the other way.You zip back the way you came, you see a bunch of figures in the distance. It's a fight...or something. It's hard to tell.Whatever it is, it's out on the Ice.
>>25924467Oh come on it's just a little ice with an ice monster.A single solitary ice monster. We are obliged to go be an idiot once again.
>>25924467We tried to save them and they would not listen to us. We shouldn't go out into the ice but I won't cast a vote either way.
>>25924467Goddamnit.We've got to charge to the rescue, haven't we? Sometimes, being a paladin really sucks. Whelp, onto the ice. Let's go arm-wrestle Cthulhu.
>>25924516And we also promised not to be an idiot about the Ice also. Also:>bunch of figuresDoesn't mean just one. Could be more than just one of those things out there.
>>25924516We walked for 10 mins. They walked for 10 mins in the opposite direction. By the time we get there they'll be dead anyway.
>>25924573Yes.But we're still going to try and save them. We're a bit retarded that way.
>>25924573>>25924571can we at least get close enough to see what's going on?
>>25924467We don't go out on the Ice, but we can still put Twang to use.We can't walk away.
>>25924571we didn't promise not to be an idiot, we can't do that.We promised to not go any further onto the ice than we need to.There's three people out there that need us to.
Sure wish we had a flare to signal the others that we're being stupid again. If we did I'd say go for it, see if we can try to rescue even one of them.
>>25924573They walked, we can get there rather quicker.Still not voting either way though
>>25924621...we might still have a firework. We never used them.
>>25924611What kind of bow do we have? Because I think we need longbow to be making the kind of shots we be taking. >>25924641Do we even have a way to make fire... or a spark.
>>25924653>do we even have a way to make fireGod I hope so. That's truly up to echo. As is whether or not we have the firework.
>>25924653Clear Venom burns as much as any fire. And even if it doesn't, we can outrun the bastard.
>>25924717its an acid, won't ignite shit
>>25924717>Clear Venom burns as much as any fire.It may feel like it if you get some on your skin but I'm pretty sure you can't launch a firework by putting acid on the fuse.
>>25924757>>25924763That's what I was thinking as well...
>>25924641That would be pretty awesome if we launched it at the Ice thing.>>25924617>>25924621Going onto the Ice is a bad plan. We go to the edge of the Ice and assess the situation: how far out they are, how many monsters have attacked them, etc.
>>25924573>They walked for 10 mins in the opposite direction. By the time we get there they'll be dead anyway. They didn't get the full 10 minutes walk you did, also they've been trying to get back as well.>>25924598You get closer, but not on the ice and try to see what's going on.The man and the woman are running towards the solid ground. They haven't seen you. The man is using your skinning knife to try and fend off the things coming after them. They're kids. All of them look exactly like the same kid that was clinging to the others. Same strawberry-blonde hair, some ruddy cheeks, same grey eyes, and all of them have rocks or sticks. They're screeching and hissing at the adults as they run. There's at least twenty of them, running and scrambling after them. They run like kids though, so they don't go too fast, some of them trip, and a few you can see have knife wounds, cutting open their flesh that's not bleeding. They cut down across what has to be a small island of land in the ice. most of the kids run around it, but one is hot on their trail and runs over the hard ground. The moment his foot his dirt, the kid's frozen wound spouts out a mass of black blood and he screams in pain, he drops to the ground as you see his flesh grow red and pucker. The child drags himself back onto the ice, and you see his flesh grow black and cold again, and he picks himself up and continues the chase.Right now, as they are, they're going to get swarmed. You can call out to them, and maybe they'll be able to make it on their own. They'll have a better chance as right now they're running blinldly and don't know where the Ice ends and the Land begins. Letting them know where to run will give them a chance. But the horde of kids will know where you are then. And of course, you can always make it a certain that they'll reach you, and go out onto the Ice...but then you're on the Ice.
>>25924788Call out for them, and move... a bit onto the ice. Meet them midway, earn them a moment of time to run by fighting a horde of children, then run.Either that or call out and then cover them with arrows. Depending on how good of a shot we are.
>>25924788Long shot. But /do/ we have the fireworks with us? I kinda doubt it but it be nice to clear up...
>>25924788So it's come to this hasn't it?Call to them and rush forward, prepare to tail swipe the little demons
>>25924788I vote we start shooting at those "kids" while we call for the man and woman.
>>25924788Call out to them.
>>25924841Agreed. Fucking kids.
>>25924788Don't go on the ice. Call out and also give them covering fire with the bow. That should slow them and make sure they can't leave the ice because wounds.
Rolled 6>>25924859You reach for the firework... but it's been replaced with Soma!
Rolled 6>>25924859Oh dear
>>25924788Does Beacon still have a charge?I came way late, but I remember Beacon had a charge at some point and I can't recall reading what happened to it.
>>25924891beacon has some charge. I don't know if it's full.
>>25924891I think they disappear after the fights are over with.
>>25924876You open your back and push around it, ha ha! Four carefully wrapped fireworks! Tricia or Lea must have the last two. They look like the image and are fairly big.
>>25924944We got a light right?
>>25924788Beacon can create light, right? So let's make Beacon a becon for those people.
>>25924907That's what I thought.>>25924911That's why I figured we'd need a ruling.
>>25924944Do we have anything to light it?Call out to those guys, and fumble with some flint and steel to light it. Once it's lit, get it aimed at this children. To the left or right of the guys running, so you don't hit them, and a bit above, to compensate for falling.
>>25924944Oh god, we have Acme Fireworks. Heaven help us all.
>>25924971Yep this. Get our bow ready too to use between firework shots.
>>25924998don't worry it'll be fine, nothing can go wrong with this plan.
>>25925013Wile E. Coyote... I started feeling bad for him after a while, you know?
>>25924971You do indeed have flint and steel. Some firelighters too for quick kindling. You jam them into the ground, trying to point them at the horde of kids."OVER HERE!" You yell. How many of the fireworks are you lighting?
>>25924944Totally stupid. Use them on the kids, after whispering a prayer to the Light to protect the two from the Ice. And if necessary, go on the Ice.
>>25925085let's send two off, one slightly to the right and one slightly to the left of the runners. Don't want to hit them. Also, it will allow our second two shots to be actually accurate, since we have no idea how much we need to lob these things.
It's going to be like that scene in the 5th Element where there's one match stick isn't it?
>>25925085Either all of them, or all but one.
>>25925085Start with one. We need to see how much affect this going to have and weather we need to send the remaining ones off all at once or not.
>>25925122that WOULD be the wisest way to go about things.
>>25925085One at a time, alternating sides. Blow one to the right, then the left if needed.
>run this way!>explosives start being lobbed at youWe give slightly conflicting messages.
>>25925232That we do...
>>25925232That's why we lob explosive BEHIND them, so they'll run 'this way' faster.
Use all the fireworks and let the Light sort em out
>>25925327IF this is the plan chosen, we have to laugh like a crazy person.
Rolled 3, 12 = 15>>25925152>>25925122>>25925108You set off one to one side and one to the other. They blast off with a mass of sparks fire, and soar through the air with all the accuracy of a thrown cat strapped to an albatross in the middle of the night by a blindfolded hyper-active nine year old.Still they go in the general direction of the child horde, and the man and woman look and point at the trail of sparks and smoke. It looks like they're following THAT more than just the sound of your voice. The firecracker explode in a burst of sound, color, and fire. The children cover their ears at the noise, and a few shield their eyes at the flare of light. One of them was close enough to the blast to be knocked away. He falls to the ground, and when he gets back up you see that he's been burnt a little, but his flesh is cold and he/she/it is unaffected. The couple are running towards you.
Lurker here.I'm going to sleep now so I've got to mention this.If these people get caught before getting off the ice, DO NOT go onto the ice. They could be reanimated as well and simply a trick to try and get you to go onto the ice where I am sure there will be a powerful mental attack waiting.
>>25925347Very good, the fireworks distract the kids!Fire off one more into the kids, and one straight up to get our friend's attention. Then switch to the bow.
Rolled 3They're about a third of the way off of the ice.The kids take off after them, once they get their bearings.
>>25925363Yeah they're still child bodies, they're lagging behind the couple a lot.Anything you want to do now?
>>25925384I already gave my action, which was this one.>>25925362
>>25925384One more firework for the kids and one straight up to signal for help then switch to bow.
>>25925384Do we have anything else we can throw?
>>25925400>>25925401Agreed. Hopefully our friends realize we're doing something stupid again and are looking for us. Though you would think that Tricia would have bugs tailing us or something.
Rolled 12, 12 = 24>>25925401>>25925400You light another pair of fireworks, one straight up, and one aimed at the kids. The couple see the launched one upwards and head straight for it. They're waving their arms and screaming for help. They're not looking at you though, which is weird, because they should be able to see that it's clearly you from this distance. The kids all hit the deck, covering their ears and shielding their eyes when they see the second one streaming towards them. Still it stops the little bastards from running. The couple keeps running as fast as they can.
>>25925423Then let's throw arrows at them.
>>25925469Can't be good
Rolled 5>>25925469They're just a little ways away. The kids are far behind them. It's going to be a bit before they catch up...but they're still not stopping.
>>25925469Look behind us, make sure there's not someone there. Then switch to the arrows.
>>25925499Cover them until they get here. Then when they do, pull a "Come with me if you want to live"
>>25925469Perhaps the children took their eyes. Well, once they're close enough, give em a ride back. Carrying people isn't normally okay, but this seems like an emergency. After ten+ minutes of extra walking, we should be safe to touch.
>>25925520>took their eyesJesus christ I hope not.
>>25925520Or entering the Ice causes a fog wall around the land?
Rolled 5>>25925469Check thermal vision, are the adults hot or cold.
>>25925499Yeah no way those kids are catching up to them.Okay, something odd's happening. They're just over twenty feet away from you and the Land proper, but they've stopped and they're turning around. Hands up to their faces, looking around desperately."WHERE ARE YOU?! WE CAN'T SEE YOU IN THE STORM!" The man yells. "LIGHT ANOTHER FLARE! HURRY!""OVER HERE!" You yell."WHERE?!" The woman yells. "WE CAN'T SEE ANYTHING IN THIS WIND! PLEASE! HELP US!"You're out of fireworks. They're just outside of your tail reach, and walking around blindly.
>>25925557God I really wish we had some of that oil right now...
>>25925557Try and light Beacon"Alright, Time to live up to your name and be a light in this darkness."
>>25925557Brighten the beacon as much as you can, while calling to them."THIRTY MORE FEET FORWARD! QUICKLY!"
>>25925557Oh great they can't hear us...Got anything we can make a torch out of?
>>25925587Light beacon. Then reach out, as far as we can, with the blunt side of beacon. They can grab onto it and we'll pull them in.Or they can use it to stab us.You know, whichever.
>>25925557We still have Beacon, right? Pray for divine assistance and set it off.
Beacon gains a charge when it stabs somebody. It gains a charge when we are wounded. We are at 3 charges.Let's stab ourselves for two charges, then use the beacon flare.
>>25925605Tail and beacon might reach, its is a bloody spear after all.
>>25925616Don't think that works otherwise we be a cheap as hell tactic
>>25925643>we be>it beToo damn late for me...
>>25925643I'm spitballing here, they can't all be winners>>25925619Seems like our best shot
>>25925557Can we use the light function on Beacon, not the holy light(takes charges) just the magic light function from the old days.
We could make a trail of arrows in the ice for them to follow, but that's obtuse and difficult.
Beacon's Flashlight Function is the probably the best bet here.We totally gotta grill the orcs about the ice gremlin kids though
>>25925696Can we use Ssen tail to hold to Beacon and stick it out into the ice for them to grab then we can pull them in?
"Alright, Time to live up to your name and be a light in this darkness." You say to Beacon and slam the end into the ground. The spear flares. It's not the Morning Star, but it's still a big-ass light."THIRTY MORE FEET FORWARD! QUICKLY!" You shout. The pair bolt straight toward you and crash into you."Thank you thank you thank you thank..AAAHH! Oh...YOU!" The woman says going from relief, to hysterical horror, to shock."You...you came back for us?" The man asks in disbelief. You're more occupied with the mob of children. They all look perfectly identical, and they're all standing there...looking at you. You can see with your heat eyes, that the only trace of life in them is their hearts, which are beating very very slowly. They glare at you. Then there's a sharp whistle and they all turn around. You see Him then. The Cold Dark Man. He's standing just out of detail sight on the ice. He motions for the children to come to him, and they do...skipping away happily. You hear a few laugh. The Cold Dark Man then gives you, specifically you, a casual wave of his hand, then walks further out onto the ice."What...what ARE those things?" The man asks. "We...we saw his parents, before...when we were planning our escape...but...but...what ARE those things?!" He asks you.
>>25925724"No idea, I'm new here. Spooks my scales right off though. Does coming with me seem less terrible now?"
>>25925724"Just that... Things. Not even fit to be called creatures really. So about that offer I made before?"
>>25925742oh, and I forgot>>25925724wave back at the man.
>>25925724"Very evil and barely living beings. Can you please come with me now?"
>>25925724"It is darkness, beyond that I know not."
>>25925724They're Things. And they aren't the worst of them, not by a long shot if any of the stories are to be believed.
>>25925724"No idea. That particular shade of darkness is completely new to me. I'm used to weird gibbering blobs wearing corpses for armor. Now, whats say we give semi-civilization a try, I swear, I won't let those heathens enslave you again."
>>25925724"Ice spirits have taken their bodies. They probably haven't been human for who knows how long. We should get out of here, NOW!"
>>25925797Can we be a little nicer to the orcs, also dumb and dumber are also heathens
>>25925724>>25925811'Some think it's the differences that make a being a monster, but really, it's the similarities.'
>>25925825we should really do something about the orcs. They're all full of slavery and survival culture. Step one is to make things easier for them. Probably by slaying the mother of these ice things.
>>25925851I like how our solutions to every major problem boil down to "stab it a lot"
>>25925724'If you really want to find out, go back on the Ice. Now, as I said, I wont promise that you'll make it, but we've got supplies back at the Rat Clan camp.'
>>25925851Yeah good luck with that. Unless we can build a V1 or V2 rocket. I'm still nope'n the ice for life. Unless we melt the whole damn thing.
>>25925880The orcs do got oil
"They're...Darkness...or just...just Things. Not even fit to be called creatures really. And they aren't the worst of them, not by a long shot if any of the stories are to be believed. Spook my scales off." You say.You wave back at where the Cold Dark Man was. "So..." You say. "About that offer I made before? Does it seem less terrible to please come with me now?"The man and the woman both nod and all but cling to you as you walk back to the ex-rat camp."Hey!" Lea says. "You're back. Tricia was about to send out her swarm.""Ssen! You had me worried sick!" Tricia says, she carefully walks up to you. "Can I hug you now or are you still poisonous death incarnate?"

>>25925934'He said Hi'.
So I spent some time looking up Inuit/Eskimo mythological creatures."The Ijirait are said to inhabit somewhere between two worlds; not quite inside this one, nor that one. Inuit further south than the North Baffin group used to hold to a belief that some Inuit went too far north in the chase for game, and became trapped between the world of the dead and the world of the living thus became the Ijirait (or Tariaksuq?). To a small handful of surviving elders in the South Baffin Region that are old enough to still have knowledge of these beliefs, Inuit that are settled in Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord are these shape shifters or shadow people, because they went too far north. Some elders will avoid being in presence of extreme-northern inuit, fearing they are evil Ijirait or Tariaksuq."Fuck.
>>25925894"I think so, these two aren't doing too badly. Turns out going onto the ice also blinds you with some kind of magic storm, in addition to scary monsters. Who knew?"Then, while hugging Tricia to the two humans"Hey, what were your names anyway? I didn't think to ask"
>>25925956"The home of the Ijirait is said to be cursed, and one will lose their way, even if they have good sense on the land. Buott and his wife Enoogoo were said to be out hunting once on the small peninsula across the bay from Freeman's Cove; and while Buott was known locally as someone who never lost his way even in the most adverse conditions, it was said he became completely turned around. While he and his wife had been there before, and they could clearly see the ocean on both side of where they were camped, Buott had to closely follow the trail of disturbed shale and rock to get back to their main camp -where their four children were alone, a mere 5 miles away, and clearly visible on the horizon."Don't. "Who are they?""I made new friends, they're escaped Orc Slaves. I found these two out near the ice and then on the ice after they disregarded my warnings and followed a boy who turned out to be one of those ice creatures and had a bunch of little friends and I saw the Cold Dark Man again." You say. "He says Hi, by the way. Oh, I didn't get your names, did I? I'm Ssen, this Tricia and over there is Lea.""I'm Terry, and this is Tammy." The man says. "She's my sister...sorta. Cousin really, but...we grew up together, if you can call it that.""Where are you from?" Lea asks."Windy Star." Tammy says."Ah." Lea nods. "Yes, Ssen...I think I know WHY the Paladins were called up here all those years back.""They came, they fought the orks, and then they said we had to leave." Terry said. "They abandoned us, said that this was Orc land and the best solution was to let them have it." He scowls. "Dad refused. Said he'd keep it until the end." He sneers at the Orcs. "And it came when these beasts killed him!"Tisgut shrugs. "Live in one place, know can come back. Warrior told, not Rat, then Hawk, not Hawk, then Boar, not Boar, then other.""We never did anything to you!" Tammy screams.Tisgut nods. "Yes, but had things could take. We took. You fought, beaten." He shrugs. "Surprised when returned found still there. Fought again, beat again, took." He points at the Rats. "Told Tisgut story. Tisgut saw no wrong. Surprised didn't move. Loss happens, pick up what can, move safer place, start again, or take from other, or die." He shrugs. "Life. Warriors understood. Why Rats let warriors take things with them.""Monsters..." And he probably knows exactly who we are and why we're here, and in all likelihood he doesn't care. Because based on our dream, it seems he's unfathomably twisted, even by Land Spirit standards.
>>25926296he probably thinks we're a good buddy. We slayed his biggest foe, and seem to HATE the idea of going north into his place.
It's survival of the fittest, eat or be eaten, kill or be killed up here. There's not a whole lot we can do about that. But maybe, just maybe, instead of dying on the Ice a mad screaming snake will pull your ass outta trouble and get you somewhere safe.
>>25926296I don't think he's really that twisted, since what he seems to be doing has a sort of amoral logic to it. After all, if everyone's the same, there's no way for anyone to hate each other is there?

Tricia says with a giggle."I've read too many books to be fooled by THAT trick!" Mage shouts from Wagon where he's helping Orcs load up. "I know hitting a woman who hits you back from a violent culture is a quick trip the the altar! You're not getting me hitched THAT easy!""You're already married to Mab!" Peri says."Annulled by death! We ain't remarried YET!""And Sophie already asked me to be the one who speaks from the Teachings." Lea says."And you ask why I agreed to come up here to this frozen hell!" Mage snaps. "It's also why I DON'T respond to those letters Her Illuminated Self keeps sending me!""Wait, what letters?" Peri asks."Crap." Mage mutters. The orc laughs. "He is quite spirited and I am very upset that I have little chance to breed and copulate with him, maybe later I can slip a chemical additive into his food and make him more pliable to by advances." The shaman, who's name is Sirala, shakes her head. "Our chief wishes me to thank you, and your tribe. The Snake Tribe is now a Friend of the Rat Tribe and shall be given respect and a seat at our fire."Also, I am sad to say that our goods are quite lacking now that the Hawks have caused us to be of a loss by means of their incendiary detonation. Thankfully, Tisgut, He of the Red Wolf, has afforded us the exchange of travel with him to his clan site. We have some items that survived the blast that he wishes his clan to obtain and thus will be willing to supply us with new goods once we arrive."(cont)
>>25926272>stop the whole slaving thingYou'll be fighting a war with that one.Which is counterproductive to what we need to be happening. Which is getting the Orcs to help with PE. This isn't Citadel where you can break one thing and fix it. We have many tribes up here all with with there own cultures most likely. It's going to be a pain to just get them to talk...
I think a fortress would have been needed to give you guys a better chance of survival than a homestead the way things are up here. By the way there were magical barriers keeping the orcs out of of the lands a day or two south of here. They've collapsed now but it would have been a slightly better place and not so far removed. What I mean is try to find small victories. Even if you hadnt gone back all the way south to the cities just a little ways could have offered better protection. Then again hindsight is 20/20.

"He says that currently, there's only two options we have if we want to be able to survive."If we try to make camp." Tricia says. "Tisgut, Sirala and the Rat Chief say that it's almost certain that the Hawks will return. They'll be out for blood, and have more skilled warriors, 'hunting sleds' which are apparently very bad news, and more shamans.Which means that we either make like crazy for a Boar tribe site. Which we can maybe reach, if we're lucky, and manage to get their protection, which won't be as easy as it was with the rats."She sighs."Or we can make for the Red Wolf camp, which we can reach pretty swiftly...but...it means crossing the Ice...at night." She says. "Tisgut says that he's never done that. Ever. He says he's never heard of anyone doing that. It's only because we've got such a big group that he's even considering it. He does say that we won't get lost because you can ALWAYS see the Red Wolf camp on the Ice. I assume he's talking about the giant wall of fire."Anyway, you're the leader of the Snake Tribe, Ssen. So, basically, we are going full circle all the way back to boar tribe. We effectively got nowhere. What a productive day.
>>25926554We would have already changed their lives by the simple matter of killing the god. Also it does put us as the strongest thing around in orc logic don't it?

>>25926456"All things being equal, Boar. >>25926587>Also it does put us as the strongest thing around in orc logic don't it?Possibly, but that also might just make us a target for them. And when we tell them to change something that they've had for gods knows how long someone or group of people will challenge that. Nothing worst than infighting when you need people to be untied for a bigger fight.
>>25926607SAS "Who Dares Wins."But I'm pretty sure even they would say fuck that noise to the Ice.

"Fight Boar, also want tribute. Always want tribute." He points to Sirala and Terry and Tammy. "At least...may demand more." He gestures to the other Dawnchasers and the younger orcs."So we fight them some more and prove that we're not to be messed with." Tricia says.Tisgut shakes his head. "Boar biggest. Boar make rules. Boar say tribute, Boar get tribute. Tisgut make Snake Tribe not tribute." He shakes his head. "But Human Things? Tribute, no question." He sighs. "Maybe keep free, but fight many Boar, or Best Boar...and if win...Boar hold grudges. Keep word, hold LONG grudges."
>>25926684Yeah, one problem there buddy. Time. We don't have that really. Remember back in the South there's what 500k army of PE waiting around for the orders to march. They are going to wait so long.

Shamans can do a lot of things easier and a lot of things that Mage just can't do at all, but fire is a unique thing.
