You are Princess Lydia Tannhäuser Von Cygnus Gates the third, second in line of succession to the throne, duchess of Tannhäuser, and executive director of the Royal Rocketry Corps of Midland. It is now turn 15 and you have 48 RnD points to spend before the beginning of storm season. The current plan is to launch a lunar probe before the storm hits. The probe is all ready to go but you will need the stone-field radio-teliscope up and running by the time it gets there or you won't have any proof.Below is the status of all components.>Unnamed Lunar probe (Pathfinder capsule, solar panels, television camera, MiniVAC, Engines, 4 units of fuel)Total Mass: 8; Overall reliability: 19/20 (Max!)>CheribumMass 12; Reliability: 14/17>Stonefield Radio-telescopeMass 5: Reliability: 8/10The latest you can safely launch is the end of this turn, your Geostationary satellite is showing what appears to be a storm system heading for the island on turn 16. >>25778886Alright, let's see.Improve the Cheribum to 17/19 would cost how many RP? All the rest can go to the Radio Telescope.
>>25778886Turn 15 Budget45RP Radio-Telescope 12/153RP MultiVAC 7/10We shall develop the Radio Telescope up to 10/15, then activate it to test its ability to receive signals, and to allow it to move past the 10/15 limit. Once the test is completed, we will finish development to 12/15.At the end of the turn, we shall launch the Lunar Probe.
>>25778975>17/19That's 5 development ranks. That's 60RP.
>>25778986Huh, thought it would be 40RP, at the worst.Oh well, >>25778977 is a good plan. However, can't we improve the television module further?
>>25779051>However, can't we improve the television module further? No, we delayed launching the Lunar Probe last turn in order to improve its Television Module to 19/20.>>25778977We should name the Lunar Probe. We shall name it the "Selene".
>>25779051Television module is at maximum. It's just the cherubim and radio-telescope that need improvement.
>>25779051This is how our budget is laid out:Turn 1545RP Radio-Telescope3RP MultiVACTurn 16 (STORM!)45RP Radio-Telescope 16/203RP MultiVAC prototypeTurn 17 (Lunar Probe Reaches Moon)15RP Radio Telescope 19/20We COULD put the points into the Cheribum, though.Turn 1548RP Cheribum 17/18Turn 16 (STORM!)45RP Radio-Telescope 12/153RP MultiVAC Turn 17 (Lunar Probe Reaches Moon)45RP Radio Telescope 16/20
>>25779150Hmm...the Cheribum improvement does look promising.>>25779088God Mother, with your House Rule that it only takes 1 Turn to reach the Moon, would we miss the Lunar Probe being activated if the Radio Telescope has to be activated AFTER the Turn 17 budget is used?No matter what, we can't afford to lose the activation of the Probe.
>>25779150Perhaps mixing the two? Investing a few points in improving the Cheribum's fail rating while ignoring it's boom. Failure in this case is the same as boom because a launch delay will cause the rocket to be destroyed by the storm.>>25779164The radio telescope has to be working by the end of turn 16 or the probe will be lost in space.
>>25779185>The radio telescope has to be working by the end of turn 16 or the probe will be lost in space. That does change things, then.Turn 1524RP Cheribum 16/1720RP Radio Telescope 10/124RP Invent/Manufacture Prototype EVA SuitTurn 16Test Radio Telescope45RP Radio Telescope 14/173RP MultiVACActivate Radio TelescopeTurn 17 (Lunar Probe arrives at Moon)40RP Radio Telescope 19/20
>>25779261We can't use the 4 RP of the suit for the rest? Well, ok.I'd prefer for both rocket and telescope to be at 15/17 than letting one of them be at 14/17, but I guess the rocket is the more important thing here. So let's go with that plan.
>>25779318Well they are of equal importance, both get one roll and in both cases a failure is mission critical. The question is, is it more embarrassing to have your rocket blow up on the launchpad or be lost in space.
Wouldn't it be more important to put those points into the Cherubim's Boom rating than into its Fail rating? If it fails all we really lose is a few turns of time, we have enough room in the blockhouses to store the rocket to wait out turn 16's storm. If it explodes we lose all the components.
>>25779356Lost in space sounds better for our safety record.Lets prioritize the rocket.
>>25779417Rocket will be destroyed by the storms if it's not launched.
>>25779417There is no way you are fitting the Chribum inside. If it does not launch today, it will be swept away by the storm. Even if it could fit, It's just too big to move in such a short time frame.
>>25779451Right, in that case, >>25779261, which I presume includes launching the probe at the end of this turn, has my vote. The remaining 8RP in turn 17 I suggest we put towards improving our prototype EVA suit.
>>25779479>8RP5 of those should still go to the Radio Telescope.
>>25779479Very much second this! We will need to be able to let our Void Knights work (and, we fear, fight) in spae.
>>25779614Pardon? The Radio Telescope will be at 19/20 with that plan. Our budget is 48 RP per turn now, remember.

>>25779778Send a letter to Ms. Kenaway congratulating her on her latest achievement. Talk about the unrest in the Western Isles and ask if she has any friends in the area. Also ask Mr, Luxon about the Eastern Isles culture and politics.
Do you wish to send a letter or a Satellite telephone call?
>>25779778Await for the launch warmly.
>>25779999Telephone call, we can make plans sooner if we speak over the phone.
>>25779999Satellite call. So long as it doesn't get into anything sensitive.
>>25779999Satellite call. Also, we might see if she's willing to talk about how her EVA suits go, and whether she finds our new radio-telescope interesting. Technology exchange is good for both sides.
>>25780083Perhaps, but don't forget that this IS a race, with discrete rewards for milestones. Right now, Kenaway is poised to get a 4RP bonus due to getting 2 milestones.
As the storm approaches, Last minute preparations are done on the Cherubim. To keep Hawtry as far away as possible, he is assigned the task of miniaturizing the RCS thrusters to a backpack unit for extravehicular use, and sketching up plans for a (probably impractical) modification of the Pathfinder that allows the capsule to depreasurize and allow pilot egress in space. You call up Ms Kennaway at the Kenaway space center in Merika and her voice comes in perfectly with an almost un-noticable delay. "Good morning you highness." Her protocol seems to have improved. "How es everything going on you island?"
>>25780279"We're getting a little battered already, but things are good! How's it going there? Hey, are you also having problem with war hawks?"
>>25780279"We are beginning to feel the effects of the Typhoon Season, and hope to get one last launch in before the storms. "Congratulations on your latest achievement, Ms. Kennaway."
>>25780309"Problem? You mean the military? No no, we have to deal with all the city states wanting to send there favorite sons and daughters up in space. Almost if they want to get red of them." She explains jokingly. "And all the cattle tribes want recognition in the program as well, I have to pay them just to use my own land sometimes!" I'd rather deal with you politicans up north to be honest. At least you only have one congress instead five!"
>>25780419"No way, at least you don't hvae to answer to them."I'd rather skip the conversation.
>>25780419"Hardly. Single though they may be, they hold far more power to annoy."
>>25780364"oh no, don't congratulate me, our last mission was a failure, we tried to do a spacewalk but he end up spinning out of control and we had to pull back in. We still have a long way to go before Mbinguni Kijiji is ready. How are you missions going by the way? Do you have any mo plans to send humans into space? You haven't done it in a while I think."
>>25780688"Oh no, we aren't doing much stuff up there. We've been building the infrastructure here on ground, that we will need for the bigger operations."
>>25780688"Yes, we wanted to finish some projects, and now we want to begin development of a new, and larger, capsule. We have yet to invent it yet, and there is still some more development work that needs to be done."We need to develop the Meteor to get the tech transfer, and we should use the Pathfinder to get a habitat in place.
>>25780728>>25780736"Ahh I see, like the big teliscope. I wish I could get something like that, everyone would insist it be built on there land and it would take forever. At least with manned missions I can keep them happy."
As an aside. Getting the full use out of the Cheribum will require a mass 2 thruster to get it into orbit.I'm also ruling that habitats have an empty weight of 1 for every 5 mass of capacity to prevent super huge habitats being launched empty with tiny rockets and then loaded and supplied with larger rockets, which just looks silly.
>>25780817We shall end the conversation here and proceed to the next turn.Please.
>>25780817"At any rate, we were still wanting to congratulate you on all the amazing things you've done. Our next big project is something of a surprise, but we hope you'll be impressed."That was about all we had to discuss with her, unless we want to ask her about the Western Isles?
>>25780905We should; might be the most reliable source of information we can get.
>>25780872"Oh you and you surprises. I can not wait. Have a nice day!">SIGNAL TERMINATEDThe colonel knocks on the door telling you it's time to launch the rocket.

Rolled 1, 2 - 2 = 1The cherubim launches without incident soaring into the air until it crests out of the atmosphere to release it's payload before falling back to earth. A giant allowing other's to reach orbit, but unable to escape from earth's gravity itself.

>>25781257We will first go to the Kenaway Space Center, to tour their facilities, and talk about what the Suthland confederation feels about the seperatists in the Western Isles.
>>25781257Wait, Orion's island is "Hazardous"? We seem to be getting on well enough with him so far. Anyway, if Stonehenge doesn't actually need our presence to get the radio telescope improved, I say we head to Orion's island, or possibly the Kenaway Space Center if we're anticipating some serious danger on the island.
>>25781356>>25781326Do you have a plan? Have you made preparations? You are why we are a disappointment to our father.
Rolled 7, 9 - 2 = 14>>25781356Hazardous because of the weather situation, the island itself is relatively safe but you would be flying or sailing into storms to get there.
>>25781399Sailing seems quite dangerous, but flying seems slightly more so. But if we are flying we can possibly avoid the storm.
>>25781399>visit Orion's island>really bad strom hits and the ship sink>gets stuck on the island>no communication>live among the savages>marry Orion, become queen>Savage Princess QuestHmm, I'm strangely ok with that...
>>25781499And give up on our rocketry? Never!Besides, we'd make contact with Midland at the end of the Typhoon Season because the Eastern Isles can get us to Tannhauser Island easily. All it would do is prove that we are unfit to our family and to our nation, because we took a stupid risk.
Please confirm, do you want to go east to meat the queen of the eastern islands. south to discuss technology sharing with Ms Kenaway, or back north to be overseeing your most important mission yet?
>>25781586Stonefield, of course.
>>25781586Heart says east, but head says north... oh well. Maybe the next time~
>>25781586I vote east. We need to meet with this queen sooner or later. Let's take some radio gear with us so that we can use the satellite network to keep track of progress with the lunar probe and at Stonefield ((dammit, I keep typing that as 'Stonehenge'.))
>>25781586Ugh. I want to speak with Ms. Kenaway, but we can afford no failures with this project.Go to Stonefield. We'll meet Ms. Kenaway after Turn 17.
>>25781661We can meet her when we are not in danger of crashing and looking like a fool to our Father.
The rocket is away and broadcasting it's test signal. A skeleton crew at Tannhäuser will be monitoring it until they are relieved by you when you get to Stonefield.Who will you bring with you and who will you dismiss for the season?
>>25781803Klaus and the professora are the only ones we might need to continue work on the other projects. So both of them.
>>25781803We will bring with us Amelia, Luxon, Perro. We will allow the others to go to Fort Adler and other places where they can continue their work.>>25781835They're needed for the radio-reactive experiments, and we would need to build a dangerous test pile to continue their experiments.
>>25781835We can't really safely move Klaus' project. Even if it's not at criticality yet it's still a radioactive pile.Sir Perro and Mr Luxon need to come with us, of course. Amelia may have more pressing business, but we'd like her to come if she can.
>>25781856Best keep Klaus busy....
Orion expresses mild interest in visiting your "Mother's island"
>>25781938This should be good. Let's bring him along. Although we should probably warn him first just how big this island is...
>>25781985((Oops. That was me, sorry.))
>>25781938Prince Orion is welcome, as our guest, but the Foreign Ministry will need to be informed.
>>25781835Ok, ignore my post. We can take Orion if he wants to come, though.
Amela, Luxon, Perro, and Orion all head to Stonefield with you as the Colonel, Klaus, and Minera stay behind with the skeleton crew. All nonessential personnel head to fort Adler or there respective homes in midland for leave.Everything is packed up tight and you board the seaplane and touch off.
>>25782231Can someone remind me if we ever marketed satellite radio to Mr. Radio? I know the telegraph barons wanted nothing to do with us, but did we ask any actual broadcasters?
Several hours later the seaplane splashes down in the gulf and you board the motorcar for Stonefield. This isn't a party like before so the situation is much more relaxed. The radio-telescope is now looking more put together, and instead of a crowd of partying nobles, there are only a few tourists wandering through the Sarsens. What are you wearing?>Frilly dress+Casual, +inoffensive>Military dress uniform+Professional, -Bellicose>Business suit+Professional, -Bourgeois>Fancy dress+Fancy, -Opulent>Trendy Dress+Fancy. -Ephemeral >>25782767You have not. >>25782879Frilly Dress, of course.
>>25782879Frilly dress time again. It's a good all-rounder, we're in the public eye here. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a journalist lurking about, now that we're back on the mainland.
>>25783243Please tell me that was the roll for the probe and not for the telescope. I think that's a boom for the telescope...
>>25783243>12Dammit, that's a BOOM. We should have waited until more development was done, like originally planned.
>>25783183You inspect the radio-telescope and test it out, managing to locate the probe's signal. A promising sign you hope.>>25783292What roll
>>25783313We use the built-in extension. We can see the roll you deleted. Explain yourself.
>>25783369Don't say "Explain yourself" to the QM. Although I am mildly curious what's going on. I'm pretty sure we're supposed to be aware of booms.
>>25783369I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of a deleted roll. If I did roll and it did fail, the nature of the roll would be hidden from the players. In any case the teliscope is not going to catch fire, and this was just a test not the actual transmission. As far as you can tell, everything is going just fine.
>>25783309((Also, we *do* have more development planned, the telescope is going to be up to 14/17 by the end of this turn and 19/20 when the lunar probe actually arrives.)

>>25783868Ah, sorry, I slightly misinterpreted the earlier budget. Change the MultiVAC bit to what's in the post quoted.

>>25784476You ride into Hafenstad via motorcar and arrive at the radio station. A smartly dressed receptionist bows and leads you into Mr Radio's office, which is also a recording studio. The lights seem to indicate that this is not on air and not being recorded.Mr Radio himself arrives shortly after. He's a tall zoot-suited man with dark skin and wearing a sharp looking hat. You've been interviewed by him before and he's been at some of your parties, but you don't listen to his radio station as much as Amelia does."How you doing your highness. What brings you to my fine establishment today?" He's much more subdued off the air, but it's still the same Mr Radio. The on air personality is not an act.
>>25784867"We wished to bring you an opportunity that is relevant to your interests. We of the RRC have completed a global communication satellite grid, allowing for radio transmissions to reach anywhere on the planet. Considering your popularity and your field of work, we felt that this might be relevant to your interests."Does Mr. Radio branch into other media?Starting manufacture of television sets and the first television productions woul be a new revenue stream.
>>25784867I can't really think of anything to say that >>25785006 hasn't already said better. Presumably Mr Radio doesn't currently have transmission coverage over the entire continent and the Western Isles? If he does, this might just end up like our discussion with the telegraph people. ((How small is this planet that it's only got two serious continents anyway?))
>>25785006"So you have a network, you just want my voice?" He ponders this for a moment. "but you don't have any manufacturers for satellite radios or televisions though. That might be a problem. I ain't sayin I don't like your idea, your highness, but this is a pretty big obstacle. Most people who listen to me already own normal radios."
>>25785876We were rather hoping that Mr Radio would be more familiar than we are with the details of who it is that manufactures radios and so on. ((Does satellite radio require a special type of receiver? I thought that they used the same type of antenna as a normal radio receiver, just with different software.))
>>25786066Ah, I see. We're still working with... tuned radio frequency receivers, here? So no turning the dial to switch stations. No wonder Mr Radio has such a market share.
>>25786066Can we not send signals on that band?
>>25786152There is a dial, it just dosn't go into the frequency that your radio does. I suppose it should be technically possible, but inventing television would require some kind of manufacturer and distributor.
>>25786228Guys I'm stumped. We can try to manufacture radios ourselves and have mister radio advertise for us on his current spectrum. Or find someone to advertise and manufacture themselves while still giving Mister radio airtime.
>>25786452"Well If your satelites can broadcast on the normal spectrum, that should work just fine, but we might have trouble if we don't get permission to use the frequencies. Just speaking as somebody in the industry, it can get pretty bloody when two stations are fighting over airspace." You can broadcast voice to any normal radio, but television would require a manufacturer/distributor.
>>25786547Again, we defer to Mr Radio's superior knowledge of the industry as to who would be capable of manufacturing and/or distributing superior radios and television sets.
>>25786755We should ask him on a quote of a favorable manufacture and if he would like to do his own advertising. we should be able to split the bill hand and al as well as the profits.
>>25786755Mr Radio tells you he'll look into it, but agrees to invest into your organization. Your budget will be raised by two points as long as you can maintain the largest constellation of communications satellites.
>>25787085Damn, we could've used that last turn for an extra point on the telescope. Ah well.
>>25787085How many satellites does Ms. Kenaway have up? We have 6 right?
>>25787181((I presume this turn's budget has already been fully locked in and we can't change it to take advantage of these extra 2 points? Even 1 more point on the radio telescope could be important for our moon probe.))
>>25787085So for Radio we can use a frequency in the pre-existing band, and for television we would be using a frequency in a new band, right? And is there a Ministry of Communication that handles radio frequency bands? If not, then we should speak with the Prime Minister about creating such a ministry. The government must have ultimate say over such an important thing as how the citizenry receive the news.
>>25787322I agree completely anon, especially given the ruckus those separatist rebels are causing in the Western Isles.
>>25787241Transfer the three points away from MVAC and start working on that next turn? I guess I'll allow it if you get a consensus.>>25787322The problem is while your government has authority over midland's airwaves, the western islands and southern states all have there own authorities and it's a complex arrangement of local treaties that holds it all together. Long range transmissions are mostly a first come first serve basis.Anyhow, it's late and I'm going to bed. We'll do the probe on Thursday.
>>25787700As marvellous as MultiVAC is, it's not nearly as time-sensitive as the telescope. Diverting 3 points from building another MultiVAC unit into boosting the telescope to 15/17 instead of 14/17 before the probe lands is a worthwhile investment of resources. Hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to get consensus on that. Also, good night God Mother, sleep well. Thank you again for running an awesome quest for us.
>>25787700>Long range transmissions are mostly a first come first serve basisSo what, we'll be able to dominate the TV frequencies because we're the first ones to get them, but we would have to negotiate with the Western Isles and Suthland for the radio frequencies?Isn't that what Mr. Radio is best at doing, the negotiations?
>>25787700>Transfer the three points away from MVAC and start working on that next turn? I guess I'll allow it if you get a consensus.Currently, the Radio Telescope is our priority project. MultiVAC will simply have to wait; put that point into raising the Failure rating to 15/17.
>>25787849More or less.
