>>24427323Well my understanding is that we're a sentient shadow that wants to be left alone with Abigail. We're naturally curious and slightly helpful, but we're not necessarily kind. Just fair.We live in a world that hates us, and just blew our one chance at diplomacy. But we know a man who wants to make somewhere where we could, potentially, live in peace. It's quite clear what we need to do. We need to align ourselves with the Duke and go balls deep. That's a good place to start from. From there, we can try and help Flint. Abigail and Adavan will be fine for now.To accomplish this, we need to get back in touch with the Duke. We should steal something expensive and use it to bribe peasants to deliver coded letters to him. This is my very general scaffold.

>>24427442From my understanding we're a little bit more than fair, as we have been kind and helpful to those who need it. Perhaps we serve justice in this way? Also, we know that Erebus was known as Lord of Justice, and if he could be Just, so can we. Besides that, we seem to have a great loyalty to our friends. We saved Flint's life a number of times, and aided him non-stop. The same goes for Abigail. The general vibe that I'm getting is that our priorities are: loyalty to friends before justice before peace.

>>24427540Let me help clarify the justice point. We have defended the weak and defenseless 100% of the time. The elves at the beginning, the village, and the people on the ship. If this is justice, then justice seems to be part of who we are.

You allow your wings to vanish into smoke and keep your feet firmly planted on the ground.<Flint! Duke! Are you there?>The door bursts open. Flint storms in, then stops, a shocked look on his face. "I thought you were dead for sure! What the hell happened out there?! I could feel that power all the way from - "<No time,> you say, cutting him off. <Auriel is right behind me, and I don't know how fast she can fly.>The duke appears from behind Flint, along with his double, Thomas, and the manservant. I'm going to Jaocb's Field.>"...give me a day, and a horse, and I'll meet you there."A star of light is fast approaching your position. You stretch out your senses. Auriel's light is...hopping. Fooling the Sky-Sever.You can't imagine what kind of aerial battle must have taken place to justify such a powerful spell.<She's closing fast. I have to go.>"Fair travels," the duke says. The non-flying varieties have flourished in their absence, but predators increased to compensate. Is there a consensus yet on what our course of action is?
You fly up and away from the hole, gaining altitude...then...BOOMYou explode through the air.You cover ground quickly......but soon enough you feel the prickling of the air surround you once again. You let the speed fade, and plunge directly into the Tairns river. You remember your little trip in the well back at the keep...you're a natural swimmer, and Ink makes it even easier. You slip between the currents and press yourself to the bottom as you continue to head north.Auriel's star of light stops at Evinbrook, and, as you gain distance, it fades from your ability to sense. It seems that you've escaped - for now.The bottom of the river is deep and dark. You can feel yourself healing...as if you're absorbing the ambient darkness....you begin to Regenerate....time passes...-------------------HP: 21/21Mana: 4/4EXP: 0Humanity: 24Temerity: 17-------------------You surface from the river near the mill. Despite the battle, it's relatively untouched. Night has fallen just an hour past.Jacob's Field has been occupied by a force of Kanians numbering in the thousands. Tents are set up around and through the town, and lights burn brightly in many of the buildings. Some of the men are even making repairs...this isn't just to cripple their foe; it's a war of conquest. You can feel sparks of magic everywhere...you're not sure what the duke has prepared for his offensive, but you hope it's big. What do you do?>slip through town and get to the forest>climb on top of the mill, take a better view of your surroundings>visit Abigail's home>visit the church>something else

>>24428216>we aren't very niceLet me fix this>we aren't very nice to people that aren't very nice to us, our friends, or innocent bystanders.
You climb on top of the mill. The wheel creaks and groans as the water pushes its paddles along. The forest of tents spreads far and out across the hill coming down into town. Earthworks have been thrown up on the highest hill, and you can see teams of men hacking into the woods, probably to use as materials for more permanent construction. Mages seem concentrated in the town proper, though there are more than a few lights buzzing about in the church......perhaps they've discovered the "nice lady"? You wonder if this was any kind of motivating factor for attacking...A growing -thumping- draws your attention. You glance over, pinning yourself down flat against the roof. A stone golem nearly three times the size of the one you faced earlier is stomping down from the hilltop fortifications. It begins to walk around the edge of town, but away from you. A group of ten or so men divided into two groups patrol along with it, five ahead of its path, and five behind.Abigail's farmhouse is isolated and quiet. You wouldn't have trouble reaching it.What do you do?>try to slip into the church>give her farmhouse a visit>enough dallying. Get to the keep.>something else

------------------------------------You make your way toward the church. The lights of patrols are easy to outmaneuver. You reach the edge of the church. Closer, you can tell more - there are five bright lights inside. One is of mostly spirit; another is a sort of mix between lightning and fire. Then there's one that's bright light, an earth mage, and a water mage.It seems the Kanians have no problem with elemental diversity......something strikes you. Why would these people be attacking Kelvere? Certainly their new ruler, Nulis, wants to firmly grasp the reigns of power...but why not do that through trade and friendship with a new ally? That would also demonstrate competence. Though, the duke did seem bothered by their use of demons....there's more going on here than meets the eye. You're sure of it.You slip into the church. You creep in under the pews, sticking to the shadows close to the floor. You stop under one of the wood benches."...there's no way down, I said it once, I'll say it again," says the man with a core of spirit. "Unless you want to throw the dice and blast your way through...but we could end up annihilating ourselves.""Lord Vin has said his peace," another says. "Our task is to get down there, and he'll not be satisfied with failure. Unless -you- want to be fed to a minotaur."The mage sighs. "It's surrounded by...force. It's not just spirit that's locking this thing in - all four of the greater elements, fire, wind, lightning, light. If we just casually dig it up, we could unleash a trap on the scale of the elementomachy. We're not getting in by force.""There has to be another way.""Maybe there is. I don't fucking see it. Do you?"The other mage stomps his foot. "This is your realm of expertise. Too bad for us, you're a dumbass.""You want to duel and find out just how much of a -""Hey!" says the earth mage. "Enough." The other two settle back on their heels. "Keep analyzing the area. It's definitely concentrated here, under the church. There's got to be something we're missing. Scour over the writings, the priest's journals, everything. Every inch of this church has to be spit shined."Three of the mages move off. The water mage turns to the earth mage. "How's the southern force doing?""I expect they'll be nearing Evinbrook soon," the earth mage says. "Wait..." he puts his hands to his temples. He's silent for a moment, then nods. "A day's march. But they're pretty sure the duke's going to be aware of them any minute. That demon lord is handy, but even he can't hide an army that large forever, not that close.""...do you think Nulis still has control over it?"con't

He's surrounded by his mages, and they'd certainly help him banish it if things were getting out of hand. I think we're ok..." the mage squints his eyes. "But...keep a backup plan in mind."The water mage nods, and sighs. "...Nulis never should have taken the throne. It wasn't his to take...""That isn't our call.""No. It's a woman's call, isn't it? And she's poison. She's the one that pressed him to demons. I don't even know why we're here. Why are we here?""Do find a magical artifact that can secure victory," the earth mage says. You creep out of the church and flit across town to the edge of Abigail's home. You walk up to the house. You can clearly see where the creature died - the grass where it fell is shriveled and black. The body itself is probably long buried. The house seems as it was. The small shutter, covering the only 'window', if you can call it a window, is bolted tight, just as it was before. You feel memories drift in you...just a few days ago, you met a little girl and she took you to her home. I used every trick in the book to conceal our path. The townspeople have accepted us readily. I know some healing techniques, so blending in as a farmer and sometime apothecary should be simple. No one else here farms turnips, it'll be easy to story-up a bit about how they're healthy, or somesuch....Zek'ata is nearly at nine months. I still can't believe the humanization worked. I love her so much...the woman who will bear my child. If it's a boy, we've both agreed to Jonathan. If a girl, I want Laura, but she wants Abigail. That's a name for old witches, but she's really twisting my arm about it.----------Something's under this town. I can't help feel like our arrival here wasn't a conincidence. Zek'ata says she can feel it too...she wants us to keep our distance. My old scientific curiosity has tried to get the best of me, but I'm a family man, now. Such a thing is best left where it is, I think. Sealed and buried. It was my curiosity that got me where I am now. It was that urge to keep pressing beyond limits, to cross lines that hadn't been crossed...never again.Abigail is 5...she's positively glowing. I've already taken the nessecary precautions, and I'm not worried. Still, I'm glad Abigail's not a baby anymore. Her powers sparked up a bit when she got to crying. I'm tracking her condition carefully...her mother is certainly unique. Other than a very strong bent for Spirit magic, she seems normal. Thank whatever gods there be for that.Abby is strong...I think, when she's ten, I'll begin her training. Until then, asking her to keep it quiet, and safe, should be enough.----------Zek'ata has caught the plague, and now she's bedridden. She shouldn't have gone to the market. The turnips were getting boring, but Abby was fine. And now this.I didn't think that was possible. The humanization gave her weaknesses, too. I've raged at myself all day.The spell controlling this thing is powerful. Exceedingly so. It's like nothing I've ever seen...old, old magic.I've been feeling unwell. Achy, sniffling. There's no time to be angry. I've got to find a way to reverse it before it's too late. For now, I've told Abby to stay in the parlor room, and not to come in under any circumstances. She's a good girl...she cried, but she listened. My lab sits before me, and I've written enough. Time for work. I haven't done any serious research in some time...hope I've still got it.----------I think I've found it. I've modified an undeath spell...it should reject the magic that's killing us through sheer incompatibility. Sigils that cancel one another out.Zek'ata is at death's door. I'm getting closer. I'll cast it on us both, tonight. And if there is a Light spirit watching over us all...I pray it has mercy on a Spirit mage, just this once.
Guys... I'm starting to think we might not just be a shadow elemental. I mean, look at our skill tree. We've got abilities from a bunch of other element's skills and magic. The colors on the background of the tree are also kind of odd. I don't know though. Just thought I'd point it out.

>>24430693Alright then.We are the manifestation of the imbalance of magic on this plane. There's a finite amount of magic of each element, and those are all equal.Shadow, and spirit to a somewhat lesser extent, are extremely limited in quantity in comparison with Light and the higher elements. We are shadow because we are that which was manifested by the background magic to restore balance. We might do this by consuming or destroying enough sources of higher elements, especially light - the more we do, the more light would come into us, fixing the balance. As another option, we could inspire a greater quantity of shadow and spirit magic to be used in the world. However, if we did that to the point of perfect equilibrium, we would likely fade out, due to a lack of imbalance to spawn us.If we killed and consumed ALL the magic in the world, the balance would be restored, and we would become the very incarnation of magical power on this plane. A scale with no weights is a balanced one, is it not?If we destroy more of the lower elemental manifestations - shadow, spirit, earth, water - then we would become more powerful in their aspects, because the imbalance would be greater, and as we are a product of the imbalance, that power would flow to us.If we made an empire and magery of the lower elements, then killed and destroyed all of the higher elements, we would gradually change during the process and become a higher-element-style elemental.Seems legit? Counter-arguments?
>>24430841>>24430841>>24430841>>24430841What an interesting coincidence. It does look like the start of a tree, doesn't it?Yet it's locked in red......hmm...OH WELL
>>24430854>If we destroy more of the lower elemental manifestations - shadow, spirit, earth, water - then we would become more powerful in their aspects, because the imbalance would be greater, and as we are a product of the imbalance, that power would flow to us.I feel this is somewhat legitthe rest however doesn't seem likely as We know magic creates more magic so it's not finite, Light and it's kin are simply more accepted and spirit and shadow repressed so their naturally more abundant,I don't think we could get rid of all the magic either it seems it naturally occurs
>>24430874I guess we'll have to ask SOM for summoning tips or find better bewks.ALSO, Reminder, next thread we gotta consume the supplies of the army, food, magical, anything to slow them down that won't require too many risks. We could do a lot of stealth damage, hopefully, before even needing to fight at all.
Woohoo! I was the first to vote up this thread on the archive!TAKE THAT SLOWPOKES.
>>24430854This seems like a very over-complicated and odd idea. Why would imbalance have a manifestation at all?and what in the world does this mean?>We are shadow because we are that which was manifested by the background magic to restore balance>If we made an empire and magery of the lower elements, then killed and destroyed all of the higher elements, we would gradually change during the process and become a higher-element-style elemental. My extremely meta-argument against this is - a large chunk of our skill tree is made up of shadow abilities. How would all of the others fit on there if it was possible to spread to other elements?
You are considering the first 10 rolls for 1s and 100s. This gives a chance of about 18.3% to either critical fail or win. I just wanted you to be aware that roughly one in 5 rolls you ask for will be critical. Taking only the first 5 rolls into consideration would lead to a ration of about 1 to 10 of critical rolls to normal results. It is your decision to make, but I for one like my characters abilities to be somewhat reliable and having a one in five chance for it to go right or wrong regardless of how good the ability is supposed to be is too unreliable for my tastes. My suggestion is that instead of having 1s and 100s determine the entire result you count them as an addition the the results. For example if a roll was failed but you roll a 100 you can salvage your failure and don't have backlash from your failure. Basically a 1 just makes the result worse, a 100 makes it better without determining the entire thing.
