Ok, so last thread we finished with the mercenaries and the vampires. We still need to explain the gods, what they are and how they work. The list of special items and/or magical items is also needed (plus some lore for magical items?), though that we will need to scour the wiki for any existing examples before creating new ones. Flags and banners are also something we ought to finish, though considering we have so many nations, we can take this slowly.

Regarding the gods' stuff
>>91351437
>Some of them are essentially angels sent by Bronzar (but still capable of going rogue) or demons sent by Althazzar
Is Bronzar the only god that created dragons? Did he create the dragongods? Are dragons and dragongods different from each other, and if they are, what makes them different?

>Others are seem to be neutral or animalistic, and were perhaps created by other gods, or are just the animalistic creations of bad dragons
I was under the impression the current more bestial dragons were just the descendents of the old long gone dragons, having lost so much power they became mere animals.

>Only two dragons left.
One is Phorsiussarx, who is the other one?

>A lot is contradictory.
True. Though we can just say that there are many rumors and legends, and keep it vague.

>There has been some mentions of a war between the divine dragons and the early Khenomeric Empire that have never been explained properly, the anon who developed it often comes up with ideas that are contrary to existing lore.
You mean the lore from the historical maps? What are the contradictory bits?
>>
>>91354599
>There isn't much on them. Like dragons they seem to have been created by certain gods as powerful agents of change but they gradually got weaker with each generation and they seem to have disappeared well before the modern era.
Possibly the best explanation. Something like "before the first mortals came out of the primordial dust, the ancient giants were long gone", with only the giant-spawned surviving. That would make them the most ancient non-divine/demonic creatures in the setting, which would be fitting.

>While writing various regions, I assumed there was 20-30 main gods who took different guises in different cultures and were fairly "hands off" for the most part
From what I've seen, some are creator gods, some are destroyer gods, and some are neutral entities. Their level of involvement depends on the god and the time period.

Is this project getting momentum again? Seems like the poster count is rising again.

Looking at >>91353655, we are pretty much done with the bulkier parts of the setting, so I imagine many who have come and gone over the months are checking to see how it's going. At this rate, I imagine we will be able to work on an usable pdf relatively soon.

I mean, the only two major things still needed are the gods/divine's nature and a list of unique items.

>Is Bronzar the only god that created dragons? Did he create the dragongods? Are dragons and dragongods different from each other, and if they are, what makes them different?
The only known gods/god tier beings to create dragons are Bronzar and Althazzar but their could be more as many dragons in the setting have no clean linkage with either of them

My interpretation on dragongods is that they are powerful dragons created directly by the Bronzar, though several have been known to have gone rogue. The dragon gods in turn created many dragon-type creatures, many of which are powerful in their own right. It is possible Althazzar made his own as well, or just corrupted some of Bronzar's. It may also be worth noting that in some places it says Althazzar was cast out by Bronzar and became a demon lord in mythological times, therefore Althazzar himself ma

>One is Phorsiussarx, who is the other one?
Wahadalar/Wahakatadalar, the Hog Island one

>You mean the lore from the historical maps? What are the contradictory bits?
Some points of contention between different anons were:
- divine dragons starting to die out a few centuries ago, this didn't make sense at the time and makes even less sense as the lore evolved
- there was some bickering back and forth over whether it was fair for the hogmen and the gnolls to have their own dragongods, it seems to have been resolved, but it also means some of the earliest dragon lore was retconned almost right away
- the idea that the Azan Empire was a slave nation for the dragongods has occasionally been proposed, but it didn't really fit with the existing lore even when it was first brought up
- it is unclear whether there is a yet-to-be-fleshed out war, or if the war is just the BoE. Some anons wanted the dragon/Khenomeric war and the Battle of Empires to be the same thing. I wrote the BoE in a way that they could be the same thing, but in discussions some people still treat it like a different thing

>From what I've seen, some are creator gods, some are destroyer gods, and some are neutral entities. Their level of involvement depends on the god and the time period.
From what I have seen and written so far, there are 1-2 original creator gods, who are very hands off, then they created around 20-30 mid tier gods who were created to help guard, populate, and regulate different aspects of the world, and then mid-tier gods created a few layers of demi-gods, titans, dragongods, powerful fae entities, guardian spirits, etc.

There are also outsider gods and demon lords who originate from other dimensions and weren't a part of the original creation

And mortals are sometimes able to ascend to demi-god status by various means

> Stone Kopesh
Discovered in the ruins of an ancient temple by Okhost Archeologists this 'decorative' item was handed to the local Gnoll Warlord as a gift.

In apperance it resembles an oversized Kopesh made out of dark stone.

Soon it was discovered the item was one of great value... a waste to have given up.

Uk'arf had little hope of becoming a major warlord due to his lack of skill in necromancy, but with martial might alone he carved his way up to his status.

The stone weapon once he wielded it he felt, great power, it was a weapon carved from the claw of a Goddragon granting him vitality, good health, increased strength, ability to cut all it touches and the ability to swmin in stone as if it were water.

With that he managed to become one of the few non-necromancer gnolls to reach a high rank in the nation and due to his increased vitality because the only one to keep it for a long time.

Should be separate imo

>Windwand and Firebrand
>One of the Seven Sacred Swords

Do we know of the other five?
>>
>>91359719
Luminor - Alleged to be the personal sword of Azam, used as Imperial regalia for several Azanese dynasties

Moon's Edge - Forged by an azanese monk using the fire of ancient dragons and a piece of metal said to have fallen from a moon. It was lost during the Battle of Empires and was never recovered. Some say it's still there today, but noone has ever been able to find it.

Mudslicer (probably not original name) - The defenses (along the troll-Changrila border) are led by Royal-General Castle Troll who wields one of the Seven Sacred Swords, Mudslicer, the least powerful but still one of the seven. Castle found the sword while on a contract in Dsrvyth.

The Khenomeric Empire only discovered magic about 5000 years ago according to the current timeline, and the earliest discussions all seem to agree that magic was discovered before the fight with the dragon gods, so instead of having the battle 3000 years ago, it happens between 3000-5000 years ago, which doesn't seem that different to me

Also we would have to explain how the Khenomeric Empire managed to defeat a bunch of demi-gods well before the Empire was at the height of their power

And also why the dragon gods went after the Khenomeric Empire to begin with
>>
>>91360040
My theory of the "Khenomeri wars against the dragons" is just the Battle of Empires. As in, the Magoclergy sold to the population during the years nearing the BoE that the Azanese were an empire of humans enslaved by the dragons, presenting themselves as the liberators. Considering they are at the other side of the world and contact would be extremely limited, it would have been possible to sell the story.

There were other places with magic like the fey, but it was a more primitive and shamanistic in comparison to the much more scientific method the khenomeric used. This made the khenomeric orders of magnitude more powerful than any other wizard.

Ok, so I'm starting with the item list. For now, these are all the relatively unique items I have found. I have added a couple of potions I assume are generic enough to exist as alchemical products, as well as some gunpowder weapons. Fey at the time only had 'natural magic' basically what was part of their nature.

The first to discover how to go beyond that and harness large quantities of mana and create powerful spells actually harness and use magic were the Khenomerics.

I assume also early magic was more powerful. There was fewer mages so it was larger to harness large quantities of mana for spells.

That's how the dragon gods were defeated.

I wouldn't say early magic was inherently more powerful, but instead all of the purges and magic-banning within the Khenomeric Empire made a lot of the old knowledge lost.

>The Gods and the Divine
The nature of the gods of Giantstep is a matter of great division. All throughout the step, the mortal inhabitants of the world worship a wide variety of entities, some worshiped by millions, some by clicks of a few hundred individuals. The role they have in the creation and maintenance of the Cosmic Staircase and the world is unknown: despite the influence and presence of the gods in the world, both in ancient times and in current day, the divine always refuse to speak of the matter, and so speculation is abound. These entities are beings of a nature incomprehensible for mere mortals, with power incommensurable. Trying to understand what the gods truly are is as much of a folly as a man trying to put all the water of an ocean into a cup. The only thing mortals can do is seek for glimpses and hints of what They truly are and what they want.
>>
>>91366954
Indeed, many gods are often represented as patrons of certain elements: virtues and vices, professions, stages of life, parts of the world, concepts and ideas… Many have argued that these is just the effects of the mortals humanizing the divine, though this point often becomes debated due to the occasional action of the gods in the mortal realm, often reaffirming their image as patrons. The importance of worship for the gods, as well as the rituals, principles and sacred words followed, tend to vary from religion to religion, though they often relate to said patronage. Their actions within the world also varies from entity to entity: some beings are said to not have interacted with the material world since time immemorial, where some have a clear and active part within the world that can clearly be seen at any point. The morality of the divine is also an often debated subject, as the nature of some gods is clearly a positive influence where as others are actively destructive. Whether they are a source of morality and ethics, or they are subject to the whims of their own inscrutable nature is once again a matter of discourse. However, most nations and societies recognize a series of divine entities whose mere influence ranges from harmful to outright destructive: the renegade moon Mg’umba, the Goddess of Greed, the traitorous Uun… all of these divinities are considered a threat to the mortal realm, and as such, their worship is forbidden in the civilized world. Some even argue some of the divinities that are veneered throughout the world were not part of the original creation, but are instead outsiders, opening another unanswerable question to the nature of the divine.

>Dragons and Dragongods
The beings known as dragons have inhabited the world since time immemorial. These majestic creatures used to populate the world in ancient times, and were present when the first civilizations rose up. These creatures are gargantuan reptilian beings, often with scaled wings big enough to bloat out the suns. There are also tales of them being able to gather the energies of the world to breathe fire or ice upon those they unleashed their wrath against. Many religions consider them angels to the gods, sent to enlighten the mortals and then return to the heavens. Some consider them demonic aberrations, whose power and malice was stomped out until only legends remain. Some consider them creatures come from another plane of existence, from a more developed step in the Cosmic Staircase. And some worship them as gods in their own right. Whatever Nowadays, however, dragons are rare and elusive creatures, the near majority of them a shadow of their former self. While it is an accepted fact that ancient dragons were both sentient and immensely wise and powerful, nowadays the great majority of the dragons are barely above beasts, with the few ancient dragons remaining (often known as “dragongods”, of which only three are known to still live in the material world) laying dormant within a few areas of the world.
>>
>>91368180
One of the most well known theories about the origins and disappearance of the dragons is the “Tale of Light and Darkness”, an azanese legend believed to originate from the early days of the empire. According to the tale, during the creation of the world, the many gods were too big and powerful to add the infinitesimal detail needed, and as such, they created the dragons. These entities would be the eyes and fingers of the gods, focusing their creative energies into the shape of Giantstep. Out of all of the gods, Bronzar the Faceless shone as a dragonmaker, and the dragons birthed by him proved to be the most successful within the shaping of the world. However, one of the bronzarian dragons, Althazzar, became envious of his progenitor, as he worked and labored tirelessly while Bronzar gained the accolades of mortals and gods alike. Some versions of the story tell that Althazzar was instead an envious god, who tried to take the form of a dragon once he started acting against Bronzar and creation as a form of mockery. Whatever version is told, Althazzar became corrupted by envy and pride, and sought to corrupt the work of creation, though he was discovered and exiled. Swearing revenge, he launched a great campaign of darkness against Giantstep and the gods, though he was ultimately defeated. Once creation was established, the dragons began going back to the heavens to their creators, leaving only their spawn who had become too weak to follow them.
>>
>>91368201
Does this clash with the already existing lore? I've presented it as vague as possible, but even so I'd like to see if it actually fits what is written.
>>
>>91368441
I don't think all sentient dragons are dragongods. There is also the Salamander King in Tarot, and probably others I am forgetting if we are treating all sentient dragons as dragon gods

>>91368927
How can we make it work, then? What makes dragongods special from other dragons?
>>
So far we have four dragongods: The Salamander King, Sarrunis, Phorsiussarx and Wahakatadalar. What do they have in common?

had some good pictures that should be added to the wiki.
>>
>>91372388
Yes, my bad.
>>
>>91374574
There are a ton of images in need of adding to the wiki, though at this point, I would wait to the pdf compilation to add them, as adding them one by one to the wiki is a rather tedious process.
>>
Also, now that we talk about images, we do need to get a lot of images for the remaining critters in the bestiary, as well as for most plants and monsters on their lists.
>>
About giants, anyone has an idea of what they could have been that isn't just "the descendants of the gods" or something like that? It sounds too similar to dragons, and I'd like to avoid being redundant.
>>
>>91376013
I imagine they were humans or other races which were transformed by the influence of the Giant who rested his hand upon the world in his climb upwards the ascenssion ladder.

Which is why they only existed near the handprint desert.

Alsi I feel were forgetting oen thing when discussing gods here. How many of them have already left the world completely and ascended to higher levels? How many new ones have come from a lower level?
>>
Bump.
>>
>>91376596
Considering that giants have no presence in the world once the mortal races appear, they are probably far older, possibly older than dragons.
>>
>>91375886
How about not doing ai this time? Even very crude drawings would be better.
>>

>How many of them have already left the world completely and ascended to higher levels? How many new ones have come from a lower level?
I imagine that their voyage across the step takes too long for mortals to notice. If they are interacting in the world, they are obviously still in this realm. We could say the only one we know that left is Uun, due to him basically becoming bored and leaving.

Huh, hadn't thought of that, good call.

Ok, a couple of ideas for the giants:
-The first creatures to start moving across the staircase were the giants, they arrived to the material world before the gods.
-Giants had no interest in the material world, they only wanted to continue to climb the staircase.
-Giants sired other giants, each time becoming smaller. It reached a point the giants left were too small and weak to continue climbing the staircase. The last giant to cross into the next level is the one who left the Giant Handprint's Desert.
-Needing to cross into the next step, but unable to do so, giants eventually withered down and died.
-Only when the last of the true giants remaining died did the gods start to create the mortal races.
-The only beings the giants left behind are the giant-spawned, who have lost all their might and have become brutes infinitely smaller than their forebearers.

Would this work?
>>
>>91368927
Dragongods as the remaining sentient dragons is the most practical distinction between them and the other dragons.
>>
>The Elder Giants
All across the world, if one digs deep enough, mysterious remains can be found. Colossal bones of creatures long gone are sometimes discovered, brimming with magical energies. These creatures are the elder giants, and are said to be even older than the first dragons. Tales of these creatures are even fewer and more far between those than dragons, as giants do not seem to take part in the original creation, nor do they seem to come from the gods. Instead, they seem to be entities of myth, entirely alien yet with a physical form, with an incomprehensible size and power, who desired to climb the Cosmic Staircase just as the gods did. Whether the giants were just physical gods or if they were mortals, we do not know. The most important document pertaining to giants was discovered within the Handprint Desert. The bizarre human shape of the mountains across the desert has resulted in many legends swirling around the mountain range’s creation, often linked to the elder giants in one way or another. However, the Archaeological Society of Azan eventually discovered a small shrine within the mountain peaks. Hidden within the deepest and tallest mountains, this shrine is believed to be of ancient age, related to the Qadashians and the Men of Bronze. This is the only construction of its kind, as the Men of Bronze kept to themselves within the inner lands, and rarely ventured outside. Within this small shrine, a series of old, barely preserved reliefs tell the story of the last of the true giants: the creature was as big as the step itself, but in comparison to the elder giants that preceded him, it was very small. To compensate for this, in his desire to go to the next step into the Cosmic Staircase, he had to propel himself, putting his hand into the ground and creating the Handprint Mountains. The other qadashian inscriptions are so damaged they are considered but lost, and thus the mystery of the giants’ nature went with them.
>>
>>91389290
Whatever they were, the study of their remains show that they were immensely magical creatures. However, the nature of their magic is remarkably different compared to any other known form of magic. Instead, they have been known to work as a warden against magic, with tools and clothes made out of giant bones often being highly resistant against magic. Which is why the desecration of the giant bones by the mossovoians was such a shock, and considered not only a near impossible feat to accomplish, but also a horrific desecration of the dead. Unlike dragons, there are no giants left in the world. The only thing they left were their descendants, often known as “giant-spawned”, though they are the palest of pale shadow in comparison to their titanic forbearers.

If there are no lore for the other two:

>Ocean's Spear
A very long pike, it is said that the head was once a holy blade made by Bronzar himself, but it was damaged during a fight in the heavens. The azanese priests decided to remake it as a spear instead.

>Shadowhisper (The Lying Sword)
A dark blade that absorbs all light that touches, it is said it was done out of a piece of Althazzar that was torned up by either Bronzar or Azan himself. It is also the most dangerous to use, as it generates a growing addiction to its use, feeling as if it was whispering in the user's head to spill blood. Its whereabouts are unknown.

Check the therianthropy page.
https://crumbling-giantstep.fandom.com/wiki/Therianthropy

It is easier for vampires to keep their mind and sanity under control than for therianthropes. Especially since each generation of infected becomes weaker than the previous, and the transformation causes much more pain than the previous one (which is probably saying a lot).

Ok, so with the divine bits more or less done, I'm considering starting to make the pdf compendium. Do you think we need anything else, or can we start the process of compiling all the info? Keep in mind there are a couple of bits still in need to completion (see the tag in the wiki) and other that could get some info. But overall, the bulk of the world is done.

Here it is. The link to the Compendium. What we need to do now is to take all the info in the wiki and in the threads, and adapt it into an actually readable document. We need to trim the fat and make a document that would actually help those reading it in imagining the world.

Ok, so I'm halfway done adding all the lore in the document that's not the description of the nations, and we are going near 400 pages already. We really are going to think ways to trim the fat.

neat
>>
Ok, so due to the sheer size of the file, Google Doc is not allowing me to keep all together on a single file (didn't know Google Docs had a word limit, much less we had passed it). Thus, I am going to split the compendium in multiple files.

FILE 1
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LEiwo0UQCqmYAujnPf-RY77WKx7mwbGq-_FJvbAApLs/edit?usp=sharing

FILE 2

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pgtlgpWnAt5hAFekW4VC-6WEVgk2dGr4v16TsMQo5ek/edit?usp=sharing

For now, these two files will be the ones around. We'll possibly need another one once we start adding the nations.
>>
>>91411659
Ok, so I'll continue adding stuff to the wiki tomorrow. For now, we have passed the +650 pages, and I haven't added images, items and none of the nations (we do need to trim them before adding them, and also cleaning up the redundand bits).

If anyone has a suggestion for the documents, please let me know.
