Here's the pdf of the current main doc. There are currently two other finished core books, one for Weapons and Equipment and the other for Social Checks and Morale. There is also a currently WIP document for an insect bestiary.

In addition, there are currently five splatbooks, either giving options for radiance infection, vessels and grimmkin, and three setting-based splats such as water-based bayou adventures, windsweapt wealds, and deserts.

For some reason discord won't let me copy the server link, but it is still very much alive.
I think one of the main dudes making this thing said he would start working on the new pdf a month or so ago, but I haven't heard anything from it after that.

I'm in the discord, but the progress is going slow lately and I haven't checked on it for a while. If I recall correctly, the most up-to-date ruleset is spread around multiple google docs and is constantly being worked on.

>/tg/ Hollow Knight thread
It's good to know that it's still being discussed
Concurrently it is still alive as some anons have stated, we've been a little slow-going with the PDF but new stuff has been added in relation to the Silksong info we've gotten in the past week
Specifically, the Belt mechanic was added as a way to store tools much again like Silksong, be it a poison, a grapple hook, a tiny little weaver and so on.
We have more plans to try and work in things from Silksong once the full game is released (as hopefully it'll spark more interest on /tg/ once it comes out) but so far, yeah, we've just been working quietly on balancing and a few new features. Hell I've worked on a few new consumables (not many) and our GM dev has helped with various poisons. Definetly planning on statting those Steel Golems seen in Steel Soul Hollow Knight and in the Silksong Trailer.
I might post a monthly thread here eventually but I rather not make it into a general if you get what I mean
Otherwise, don't feel shy about joining the discord, we're still very much alive.

never liked the /tg/ made setting, always felt a bit off from the established HK feel and not fantastic enough so to say, but the effort and work these guys put into making the system and the kingdom coming to life is praise-worthy, I love it!

Rolled 4, 3 = 7 (2d6)

This is kind of a surprise.
The system got to a pretty finished state that people seem to enjoy playing at pretty much exactly around when a few of the guys working on it hit some trouble and couldn't work on it as much.
Conversation kinda died down a lot right then. There's a group that plays in the server, and my table and at least 1 other I know of that play it irl. System's solid, it just needs one last go-over to organize and polish it into something worthy of publishing.
I actually really like some of the mechanics and have been thinking of stealing the core of it to make a general fantasy rpg.

>Although, as the Knight listened, he noticed that no sound of battle could be heard
>He decided to advance, determined to uncover the secrets of this house
>And as the Knight risked his head into a door frame, he was stopped in his tracks
>The room was in an incredible state of disrepair, even for Hallownest; Piles and piles of rotting food littered the room, which explained the lack of predators in the area
>pieces of paper had been stapled all over the walls; the Knight couldn't see far enough, but they seemed to be covered in text
>Finally, three bugs occupied the center of the room. One long , one fat and one small were busy arguing right next to a couple of crudily painted rocks and a bunch of paper sheets
"This is bullshit and you know it! The Devourer was never meant to be this powerful, or even an archetype in it's own right !"
"Yeah, right. You're only saying that because your mind is corrupted and it's preventing you from seeing the genius of my build"
"Sure, a build that you MADE THE DAMN TRAIT FOR"
"Guys, guys, this isn't the Pale King's court you know ? You don't have to argue over pointless subjects all day long. Anyway, you two enter the hall, and recognise that you have found the Palace of pleasure..."
"Oh god"
"THIS is your grand finale ? I can't believe I stayed playing with HIM only to enter a Magical Nest !"
>Careful not to make any noise, the Knight quickly backed away from the room before locking the door and staring at the key

It's late in the night but I'll tell of the notable characters I played for the playtest
For one there was Jalukah: The Blind Dreamweaver. Essentially the Party Mystic/Shaman who dealt with the dangerous magical artefacts. His last course of action was accidentally killing a fully-grown vessel before falling off of the God-Tree into the unknown

Specter was another notable one in that he was a flawed Vessel who was more-or-less a murderous manchild - Doom-Slaying murderfucker in combat, literal child the next. He died getting swarmed by dusted mantids when investigating an abandoned noble's mansion

Nihilance was another large vessel that focused more on grappling and CC, therefore as a flawed vessel he was obsessed with stealing shiny trinkets and baubles, had a deep fear of light. Last thing he did before he died was trying to steal a magical totem from the primary party before being killed by a weaver.

Concurrently however I am playing 2 characters in our current session:
Chekra is a former Mantis Lord turned lifeblood-reliant mantis warrior traveling with his ward, Morphal (the second character) with a caravan away from the God Tree
Morphal would be the second character, a lifeblood butterfly absolutely obsessed over Lifeblood, to the point that he'll preach it like a Mad Priest preaching the word of Radiance. A very anti-social bug when not around his companion though, very reliant on the dude.

I wasn't sure if you've seen the characters on discord or not but seeing as void posted his may a well do the same.

There was a devout for a one shot which i made as a discount stag which was meant to grapple guys and shiv them. didn't work as planned.

There was pic related. a starry eyed little moth in the same one shot. he was the only survivor.

Currently playing two character in the same campaign.
First is Cuddles, the scariest spider (or any bug really) you will see, which you wont because he likes to cover himself in moss like it's a gillie and hunt pray from half the map away.
The other is Droog, a wasp soldier who went rogue and sided with the "enemy" and is currently trying to help said enemy flee the kingdom to find a better life.

Any recommendations on the types of bugs that would be fun to build for a first campaign? My group has a couple of ideas but is mainly looking for examples.
>>
>>67059933
mantises and spiders, are all decent fighter type builds. butterflies and moths for more social types. ants wasps as a mixed bag maybe? I'm really just talking out of my ass here. just don't commit Simic levels of genetic fuckery while making your character and you should be good.
>>
I noticed that the character sheet we use hasn't been posted yet so i may as well do that
>>
>>67059933
I've mainly done vessels and they can be pretty good in a few different ways, from Crowd Control to disabling magic, booby trapping items, etc.
for Class ideas, Lifeblood is great as a offensive support since it can both give allies extra health and use that love old to power attacks in place of stamina. Void is good too, but it works better on Vessels since normal bugs take a penalty.
Otherwise yeah, just go at it however you like, hell you can try replicating other bugs like Quirrel or ehat have you.
>>
>>67033034
There was at one point a great complaint that going first wasn't a big enough advantage because stamina is regenerated at the beginning of a turn, and so you'd waste all your stamina attacking a dude who'd just regenerate stamina and decimate your stamina-less self Something like:
"Blitz bauble
Cost: 3
During the first round of combat, bugs that are struck by a bearer of this charm do not regenerate stamina at the beginning of their
first turn."
would allow a blitzbug playstyle, without making it a staple of combat. Could be more autistically worded if you wanted its meaning to be absolutely unmistakable.

Anyone got any idea how to stat those Steel golems seen in Steel Soul Mode and the Silksong trailer? Pic unrelated
>>
>>67063336
they're made of metal and can apparently live forever if not disturbed (read, a very very long time)
I wouldn't place the smol versions that we saw in Silksong at the same "tier" that the one in the Steel Soul mode (forgot her name), but they should either be really tough, or simply immune to anything that's not soul damage
>>
Can someone give me an info dump on what we know about Silksong?
>>
>>67064608
No release date yet, but enemies hit harder, Hornet leaks soul on her last pip of health, silk and song are two very common themes, Lace is a speedy bitch, tools take a secondary resource called shards to build, her poncho has pockets which can be upgraded, bells have a very large presence in the new Kingdom of Pharloom, and I think that's all I know of so far
Also Seals of Binding are still prevalent in Pharloom, just with no Hollow Knight symbol on them this time around
>>
>>67064608
>>67065203
Also a different currency so we might have to make some kind of universal currency like caps in fallout
>>
>>67067292
Eh, I think unique currencies fit well with the setting.
Hell we came up with our own when Silksong was released, called "Tears", or Amber Tears, inscribed much like Rosaries.
Sides, unique currencies can work well if players decide to explore the wastes and discover newfound kingdoms

ok, so for this example im going to make a water strider.

i'll make him small so he's fast and graceful but not as strong, scary, and i only 15 hunger to work with

I give him 7 traits. Mandibles (1H 2S), Gracefulx2(4H 2S) Swift(4H), Blind(-5H -5S), Tremorsence(4H 3S), and Water Treading(3H)
so my stats are 2Might, 3Insight, 3Shell, 5Grace, 2Spook, 11Hunger, and 9Speed

next is weapon. i'll want something i can grace attack with so needle would be my option.

now is a proficency. I'll flavor it as "Scout" and take the Stealth, Navigation, Handling, and Parkour skills

and now we get to arts/spells. since i'm a weapons character i'll take an art. Let's go with Lunge

finally there's charms. since i want to be even more like Speedy Gonzalez i'll take the Sprintmaster charm

and that's pretty much it

Not him, but what are some real life bugs that you would want to play, and how would they translate to a character?

For me the comet moth is my favourite insect. To make it I would have to go with path of radiance, since it is the only path that allows characters that don't eat, and a fully grown comet moth has no mouth. It would probably be pretty shitty because of this, but by taking both carnivore and herbivore I would have a lot of points to work with. That would allow me flight, among other things.
Character wise, the lack of a mouth would make them unable to talk, which might be a challenging thing to roll play. They would probably be at least mildly insane to let themselves be infected, and a very violent person because more combat ability is the only reason characters let themselves be infected in game.

>>67094005
Just how important has footwork been in games? Like, I understand you want a little sub-trait for each trait(belt size, load size, notches, and footwork), but if that's the case just have initiative be the subtrait. It's already got modifiers that ignore the parent trait. Footwork just seems like a mostly useless bit of rarely-used trivia or something, why not just let everyone move around to their leisure, so long as they don't exit an enemy's reach? Have you found the basic grid combat to conflict at all with the fluidity one would expect from a hollow knight game? Why are there so many fuckin arts. I'm on the discord too I just don't play in the games; I don't want you to get the impression these are things of such monumental importance that even anons with a passing interest would bring them up. Has anybody joked about attempting to get the biggest load size obtainable? Like, they could carry so much shit they'd drown enemies in their load?

Just because the RL bug doesn't have a mouth doesn't mean that your HK adaption can't.

>>

'Giant' is in like, a foot long at the biggest. So in HK terms, fucking massive.

Naturally you could turn this waaayy down to playable size and say that in ancient history, your species was much, much bigger.

I'm thinking about doing a Cordyceps infestation style campaign, a-la resident evil. I'm having trouble trying to decide on a big bad for my part to fight at the end of the campaign though. Any thoughts on a good cordycep infested buggo for them to fight that's terrifying on it's own?
>>
>>67106773
While technically pushing the bug thing...
A bobbit worm.

Sitting below the forest-origin of the cordyceps infection is a dried up lakebed. Bathed constantly in the drifting spores and filled to bursting with the ruined corpses of the bugs whose infection has run its course.

In the middle, there's a barren patch. Devoid of corpses and enticing for any travelers who are tired of clambering over dead bugs. But no sooner then when you have touched down, it emerges with impossible speed, it's shell bloated with the fungus, foul tendrils poking out at the seems, it's every movement spreading the toxic spores. As the party fights it, it may occasionally return below the soil to recuperate, this moment of peace however is short lived, as the soil, shaken and loosened up by the movements of the worm and party, Cordyceps-Infected bugs claw their way out from beneath the parties feet, half-eaten and mutilated by the worm they know mindlessly serve.

I was already looking for spider archetypes for an unrelated thing, so:
> Jumping spider voltigeur
Mobile fighter with (nail-)lance. Very mobile, jump for impact and retreat. Bungee jumping with a silk thread from the ceiling to hit directly under with the force of the fall
> Tarantula knight:
Big armoured dude, also has detachable urticating hairs to fuck with sneakier opponents
> Wrap-around ambush spider ranger. Or chameleon crab spider.
I also thought of some shadow magic for sneaky spiders, but it's tricky in HK unless they are related to the void or worship it somehow.
> Deinopis net caster as retiarius
> Battle seamstress that resulted in >>67025545
> Some sort of silk based magic user
Magically control silk threads to grab things or to control marionettes (other bugs or moults)
> Spider martial artist
Imagine grappling with eight limbs and being able to produce glue and rope at will. Also silk-rope-dart.
> Probably a poison specialist
Don't have one right now. A ninja Sydney funnel-web maybe? Or a black widow for a more classical look? Or a spitting spider for range poison?
> Creepy social spiders' nest
I like them not sapient. At least individually.
> Broodmother type
> Dolomedes submariner

Pelican spiders are weird looking enough to get a mention too.

So being the hard-core voidfaggot for all things void-related, how would you all work in various shade-entities now that the Shade Lord is a real, living thing?
How would a campaign go with /ourvessel/ being the BBEG but not intentionally so?
what kind of void enemies would you expect The Shade Lord to create with such a vast influence over the Void itself? Beyond just simple, amorphous blobs and formations of void and thought?

>>67131583
To add onto this, I'll throw in a few of my own suggestions that I've been brewing on, of which I might also throw onto the Dev Discord for review:

>As the Shade Lord manifests itself into the physical world, the void begins to take on a more definitive shape and form.
>Voidlings - amorphous beings of void, with many eyes or many tendrils, are considered to be the weakest of void entities - still relatively dangerous however when you consider the soul-sapping, corrosive effects of Void.
>Shades are also somewhat weak when compared to Voidlings, though their form gives them an advantage in Void-casting.
>As the Shade Lord's influence begins to take hold of The Abyss, however, Voidlings and Shades begin to take a more defined shape.
>Void Husks - creatures so full of void that the substance itself spreads across the shell and steals the form of the victim - begin to shamble from their deathbeds and graves as ghastly incantations, much more dangerous compared to Dust Husks due to the Void's Soul-Sapping properties. They still lack the higher intelligence of more formed and focused beings of Void.
>Higher Shades are shades that have taken on the form of their former vessel. Having loss their ability of flight, they now focus more on martial prowess in comparison to void magics, making them much more concerning when their speed is taken into account.
>Soon, The Hollowed begin to appear, a mockary of larger vessels given focus from their unseen mind. Hollowed take on the form of very specific large vessels, much akin to one Hollow Knight or perhaps more matured, more experienced Vessel. Their combination of Void Magic and Martial Prowess makes them especially dangerous to the more hardened warriors, and a near death-sentence to the inexperienced adventurer. As a figment of Void given focus, it shouldn't be underestimated when being fought.
continued in the next post
>>
>>67131583
It's likely that the Shade Lord would spawn Siblings en masse from itself, or warped and tortured mimcries of the Knight and similar such Vessels. Likely, these formations of Void are from the little Ghost crafting said entities from recollections of its own past and history.

>Once the veil between Dream and Reality begins to weaken in the Shade Lord's presence, its influence begins to fully manifest as many-armed Void Aspects. One can tell them between Hollowed Shades by their soul-piercing eight-eyed glare and their tendril-like arms which lack hands or fingers, despite their unique and often twisted physical appearances - almost as if they were incomplete forms of the Shade Lord itself. Wherever their presence is made, the Void begins to take shape in their image - Void given Form, shaped into twisted parodies of creatures both native and foreign, shades given a more concise structure and void entities given more definition to their weak forms. They are the most dangerous of the Shade Lord's influence, and only the most suicidal, or bravest of parties can only hope to take down such manifestations.
>And thus, as the Aspects of Void converge and the veil is finally pulled, the Shade Lord is given true form as a focused, living avatar of the Void itself. A Higher Being of the Void itself, the Shade Lord can perhaps challenge even the Lord of Dust in power and strength, as soul-strucked worshippers call upon their "God of Gods" to bring forth the end of their Kingdom. Should a party dare wish to challenge the power of such a Higher Being, they will find their battle to be one fraught with void, sharpened tendrils and harsh whips as this battle-hardened formation of Void accepts their challenge, as fruitless as it may be.
>While not impossible to banish a higher being from this mortal realm, The Lord of Shades is considered a mighty challenge for those that wish to preserve against the encroaching darkness of The Void. Some say that petals of pale light may aid in their quest, but such things are a rarity even beyond the realms of ever-lasting Kingdoms, both fraught with life and desolate in ruin.
>>
>>67131898
That's what I'd like to think too.
Eh, sides, it was a brain drain to spice up what would be a kino-tier fight between /ourvessel/ ascended and whoever's crazy enough to fight a higher being like The Lord of Dust or The Lord of Shades/Shade Lord.
Plus, lets be honest, The summoning of Shade Lord/The Coming of The Shade Lord through the Godmaster's void-filled dream realm would perhaps lead on to a more concise, united Abyss under one mind, but that's just something I'd like to think anyways.

Sorry, I shouldn't have assumed people would have the attention span to read long sentences.

>>67123419
I'll humor you with this despite it being late as shit
The way I see it, a Higher Being is a mortal God, or a physical being that can exert a powerful magical influence over those that worship or accept them.
This would be the case of Unn, whose influence has led to the physical creation of Greenpath and the Mossbugs.
Higher Beings, however, may lose their power after a given time, again with the likes of Unn - who is seen slumbering in the dream of the Godseeker - and Grimm - who must sacrifice himself to the Nightmare Heart in order to live eternal. It's not known if this happens to all higher beings or if it's just isolated to Unn and Grimm, but The Radiance and The Pale King are known to exert a powerful amount of influence over the inhabitants of Hallownest. In The Radiance's case, this influence is so powerful it transcends the barrier between the Dream Realm and the Physical Realm, and manifests itself as The Infection.
>>
>>67132802
And as to why The Vessel can read those tablets, they're the child of The Pale King and The White Lady - who is another Higher Being much like her husband - and casted into the Abyss before hatching, literally why The Pale King says "Born of God and Void"
The Vessels are higher beings, only marred by the Void in order to fulfil the destiny of sealing away The Radiance.
>>
>>67029838
Glad to see the thread is still up, went offline for a few days!

My idea for a new kingdom pitch would be based on something like this: I really liked the concept of bug sentience being dependant on the Higher Beings that gifted them with it. Wherever this would happen, a kingdom of sorts would spring up. If the bugs strayed too far away from the source of their consciousness, they would revert back to their primal state - unless escorted by a Higher Being (Grimm) or protected by a powerful spell (seals). So bugs travelling between different kingdoms would be a rather rare occurence...But what if instead of bugs roaming around, a whole kingdom would roam?

This "nomad kingdom" would be set up on a giant beast (giant by bug standards), some sort of a fantastic crustacean/mollusc hybrid, which slowly moves through the ash-storms of the sunless wasteland of the HK world - in my imagination, the benthic of a long ago dried up sea. Bored into the great shell of the creature, a strange "underground" city would persevere.
>>
>>67132831
(cont.)
Bugs piggybacking on it's shell basked in the Creature's aura and in turn it gifted them with tiny bug-minds, thinkig all on their own. The beast would be a Higher Being, roaming through the wastes attracted to the lights in the night - or something else hidden to the naked bug eye...Sometimes, those lights would be other kingdoms, and for a time the beast would be passing them by or "monitoring" for a while. And in that interval some bugs from those other kingdoms might, curious and adventerous as they can be, hop on for a ride - or the natives of the Nomad kingdom could visit new places and stay awhile, until their home returns to "pick them up".

The bugs living on the shell, dug into the armor of the creature to hide from the harsh outside, though there are still a few small outposts on the surface. They mine different substances that the shell is made of to build their homes, tools and other stuff. Depending on the quality of the substance, depends how easy it is to mold it into what you need. The substance is also imbued by the power of this Higher Being, providing wonderous properties and abilities to the items bugs create. And the deeper you go, the higher is the quality of the substance...However some of the bugs "dug a bit too deep" and came through the shell to the other side, inside the organism of the creature. This prompted some bug-like beings that lived inside the beast to attack the invaders, a sort of an "immune" reaction to the threat. The Samurai Jack episode where he gets imprisoned in the titanic creature should give you the idea. The pain these expeditions and excavations caused to the beast also affect the bug civilization living on and in it - with the change of its mood the tides of emotions would sweep across the kingdom through its aura, making some of the inhabitants to go mad with rage, berserk with sorrow etc.
>>
>>67132839
(cont.)
This would be the primary point of conflict for this kingdom. Characters/protagonists would have to either satisfy themselves with a low quality/low power substance or venture deeper into the creature, risking sometimes much more than their own lives but also having the chance to find ever weirder "artifacts" produced by their host. Items in this kingdom would be mostly organic or organic-derivative in nature and the deeper into the creature you went the weirder the living "levels" would become.

Different parties would get in confrontation depending how greedy and power-hungry they are, how much they care about protecting or exploiting their environment. But bugs for the most part would be unaware that their moving kingdom is a living creature and that would also be a plot point for characters to uncover. This Higher Being is more like a force of nature than a being with a precise agency like Pale King for example. Uncovering the mysteries surrounding the creature and finding a way to communicate with this "living world" would also be one of the plot points. Kingdom's currency would be called "Roe" (and is exactly what you think it is), with the kingdom aesthetic drawing some inspiration from Samorost...and that's all I've got so far. Still can't make up my mind about the name for the realm though.

Thoughts, comment and critique pls?

The idea of sentience being tied to that of a Higher Being has always been a hot topic of debate between the lorefags of hollow knight. Through truth be told it may be dispelled with the release of Silksong, as it seems Hornet still retains much of her sentience and memories of Hallownest when sent into Pharloom.
How Quirrel loses his memories though is a mystery to me. Personally I theorize that the more time spent living in the wastes - with dust blowing against one's shell and barely any food or sustenance abound - eventually their mind just decays to the environment.
Again though that wouldn't explain how those bell cultists would still be retaining their own mind as well if the trek to Pharloom is a multi-day trip.
Still, you got some interesting ideas here Anon, some that could play off well in the world of Hallownest with creeping giants and desolate dusty wastes, plunged in permanent night.

And to be completly honest, I didn't check on the Oakshade for a long while, might be that it changed for the better. What repelled me at first was how the kingdom stood out when compared with the rest of the setting - a sun basked desert kingdom situated on a tree - quite broke the mood and established HK themes for me. But that's just me ofc.

There is one critique I do have about it, and it's the Roe as currency
Chances are there will be bugs that worship the Higher Being they inhabit, much like how there are bugs that worship The Pale King, how there were formerly bugs that worshipped The Radiance, and in Oakshade, how bugs worshipped the Oakwyrm (along with the dusted bugs worshipping The Lord of Dust/The Dust Lord). Having the eggs of a Higher Being as currency seems a little weird compared to if they just used the shell of the Higher Being to base their currency off of, as I assume the eggs/roe will be much more uncommon than the shell off its back

Yeah I will admit, it bothered me too. With Silksong showing off bright, sunny-like areas though I've mainly ran the excuse that the God-Tree (the giant tree of which Oakshade was founded on) exudes a constant glow much like a Higher Being, simulating life and bringing forth plants and flowers for the inhabitants to feast on, both within and near the tree itself.
It's that, or have The Lord of Dust simulate a desert sun much like how The Radiance simulates the sun itself, baking the landscape around Oakshade as it bides its time for the tree's unnaturally protective magic to finally give way to its own influence.
The other devs might disagree with me on that but hey, to each their own

I really do like the idea, and it opens the door to some wondrously creative things.
Maybe the surface outposts are the homes of outcasts and deviants, as being so far from the body-heat of the beast and exposed to the near-infinite sunless wastes one might see from the top might drive bugs mad.

Imagine the party walking along a road to an outpost, and they notice something. A lone bug, head craned skyward, staring into the blank nothingness above and unresponsive to all outside stimulus, aside from swaying back and forth slightly. And as they approach, they spot another doing the same. Then another, then another. They finally reach the outpost, and the only bug there not staring upwards has a great, wide-brimmed hat, weighed down with many stones so he can never raise his head high enough to stare into the damning sky above. He's surrounded by a living forest of hypnotized bugs, idly humming a broken and eratic tune. He greets the party with a ragged, rasping voice, his every motion janky, like a rusted metal puppet being jerked around. He only says one thing to them at first.

"It was just a joke. I didn't actually see anything up there. They did though. They all did."

Maybe you could have a faction of bad guys trying to kill the travelling beast (the Traveller?) for some reason. Maybe they believe bugs SHOULD be mindless, that it's the right order of things, or maybe they are lead by a vengeful higher being that hate the Traveller for some reason like believing his kingdom fall because of him (rightfully or not). They would try to drill deeper and deeper, fighting with the beast immune system. Maybe they have access to some soulkilling magic or device: imagine an necrotized inner area they successively killed.

Area ideas:
> Shell surface
Harsh waste inhabited by outcasts (or bugs from other kingdom couldn't get in) trying to hide from the winds in whatever crevices or shelter they can find or build, they say the winds wither the soul. Also empty minded bugs and weird beings that can live outside any kingdom, and maybe the traveller has some external organs that would be totally incomprehensible here. The winds are opponents on their own.
> The outer Spire
A shining city built on the outer shell, it is completely sealed from the outside. Part of the kingdom aristocracy live here watching over the world while totally cut from it. It's construction might be hinted to be an atrocity as workers had to suffer the winds. Maybe a previous evil king raided visited kingdoms and used slave labour?
Maybe a revolt or bad guys breached part of it in a terrorist attack, letting the winds enter and ravage it.
> Outer shell
The out part of the shell is rock solid and not very comfortable but protected. Various shafts may lead to the surface but are likely to be sealed or defended. Some outcasts from the surface may have find a way in and build an hidden village.
> Middle shell
Where most of the kingdom live. Most of the population don't care about anything outside or below. Or maybe there could be bugs from many kingdoms making it a cosmopolitan city. Maybe some war of the gangs going on?
>>
>>67133594
Possible factions:
> Imperialist: want to conquer other kingdoms the traveller come in contact with.
> Isolationist: Fuck everything from the outside
> Order of the Traveller: a religious order devoted to the Traveller. Can they really contact the Traveller? It may be possible through the dream realm.
> Merchants/explorers/savants guilds that favour relations with visited kingdoms. The most idealists dreaming of being the link between all bugkind
> Various picked up tribes, some may act like mafia protecting its own
> Winds cult: Fanatics believing the Traveller is an abomination and must be killed

The kingdom may have had various kings (not higher beings, just bugs getting in power) each favouring his faction. So they had conquerors, isolationists, merchant kings, a Traveller devout and maybe even a foreigner king and an heretical king.

Important people from all of those factions may have a safe place in the outer shell or in the deep shell.

> The deep shell
Here you have your mines, laboratories and such extracting resources from the traveller. But also the main temple of Traveller's Order and Winds cult trying to pierce through.
It's also start to get weird with creatures from the outside leaking out.
> The inward Spire
Reflection of the outer Spire, except it shows the inside of the Traveller. Maybe the king's palace? Maybe the Order inner sanctum? As the other Spire, a breach would prove disastrous.
> Divine flesh
Everything deeper is sacred lands, protected by the Traveller's immune systems, only inhabited by a few lost saints of the order and spirits.
Also contain the dead zone, where the cult manage to kill part of the Traveller. What horror have being used here? A void being?

Extending on that: maybe he's a coward that fled his falling kingdom, abandoning it . Maybe he was trying to conquer the Traveller, or was counter attacking an invasion from the shell's kingdom and get stuck when the Traveller moved. Maybe he got separated from a loved one and try to control the Traveller to go back.

Somehow I always assumed it by default, with Radiance for example granting the bugs a hivemind and Pale King in contrast granting them individual minds and Grimm giving them a madness of sorts (not sure if his followers are bugs at all though). It makes it a cheap move imo to steal away a part of the power and agency generally assigned to HBs if the bugs can think on their own from the start. Also messes up a bit with the meaning of the lore and denies a plot hook or two (bugs starting to think on their own, without a HB intervention). But that's all of course my interpretation.

As far as Hornet is concerned and SS, we are yet to understand what power drives behind the bugs of Pharloom, maybe some magic or focus allowed them to traverse the wastes without losing their minds? And Hornet is kind of a lackluster example; she is not an ordinary bug, essentially a "demi-god", so the general rules don't apply to her, I think. Though I agree that the "sentience leak" in the wastes should be gradual, both due to exposure to the elements, social isolation and HB power absence, instead of an instant loss.

>>67132970
The thing is, as I mentioned, most of the bugs living in *placeholder* are unaware it is actually a gigantic creature. The idea was that this Roe has a healing power of sorts and is an important part of items you can create by molding, so bugs use it as a currency for its value. The being produces this "roe" in abundance, with more powerful (and thus more valuable) variants found deeper in. Some bugs might worship it for their healing aspect I guess, but a true revelation comes when they discover what it actually might be. Resemblance to roe might be just superficial or most of the eggs unfertilized - the titanic beast is probably the last of it kind.
>>
>>67148157
If not the Roe, then maybe the crystallized blood of the beast? Simply called 'Rubies' or something similar. I do like the Roe idea though. Many of the enemies present in this adventure-setting should be based off of parasites or vermin like flies or vermin, vilified and hated because they literally ruin the 'land' with their presence, turning things septic and nasty if left unchecked.

Also how would the bugs not realize that their entire world is on the move?
Additionally, it needs a name, have some suggestions.

>>67133108
Scary storytime appreciated; I can get that shellside would be "home" to castouts, away from the heat...until the cold and wind have had their way with them. The Outside was supposed to be a rough relief, spiky and spiny as with some crab shells. I envisioned it mostly barren apart from a few homesteads here and there, bugs farming weird lichen forests and alien-looking fern attached to the shell of the creature.

>>67133594
The main faction was supposed to be a militaristic "evil empire", group of bugs parasitizing on the Creature (I guess Traveller will do for now), parading around with their weapons and bullying other bugs. They "milk" their Host without for every resource that they can, exploiting their surrounding withouta second though. Imperials believe they can get away with whatever they want because they provide the main protection against the prawn like creatures emerging from the beast that are attacking the kingdom...unaware that they are the cause of the incursions for the most part. They want to maintain the monopole on artifacts and items and send raiding expeditions whenever another kingdom appears nearby, taking slaves and riches. Inspiration for them comes from mosquitoes, flesh-eating wasps and other parasitic/bloodsucking type of insects. They would be kinda the antagonists of the kingdom. The main threat to them would be a group of bugs that are marked by the Empire as troublemakers, because they are attempting to live in tune with the Creature, and try to develop a way to tame the invading monsters instead of just killing them off indefinitely. Without the threat, the Empire loses much of it's hold over the bugs living in the kingdom.

Well I had several ideas about that. The Traveller I see akin to both the Lion Turtle from Avatar, Discworld A'Tuin and the Ocean from Solaris - he has a purpose of his own and motives that the bugs can hardly understand. This world, in my vision, is a dying earth type of a scenario with a glimmer of hope at the end of a very, very long tunnel. He is maybe futilely searching for a mate, hopelessly calling in the night without an answer. What happens if he finds one? Or did his kin died off ages ago and the Traveller is the last of his kind? Can he in that case find a mate in another HB? Can bugs help and fetch a willing bride? Is that why he is inexorably drawn to the lights in the night that so happen to be inhabited by other HBs? Maybe he needs something in order to leave fertile offspring on his own and that something is what he's desperately searching for...can the bugs help the Traveller with that? Will he reward them with something in return? Or is he just at an infant stage and is soon to grow out of his current shell - and burst out and leave it behind, or as a hermit crab drop it off and change it for another. Can the bug kingdom survive this doom? Did this happen before already? How many shell kingdoms were before this? Or will he go into a chrysalis and mutate into some other form of HB and assimilate the bug kingdom with him into this new form? Or finding no hope for any of this, lock into a protective cyst to wait for an age, sealing the kingdom with himself forever (in bug perspective)? The bugs need to understand their Host soon, before it becomes too late. And these are just some of the interpretations bugs might stumble upon in their attempts to understand the Traveller...
>>
>>67148444
>>67151900
The bugs are small, they don't see that far, and the creature is in comparison very big. The howling cold storm bashing outside is also making them to prefer to stay inside the shell, where they've dug their homes and where their food and most of the relevant places are. They don't really care that much about the unforgiving Out There. The Host creature is also as I said a type of molusc slash coral reef slash snail, so it is gliding slowly, gently sliming it's way through the wasteland - if you weren't looking at the stary sky on the occasional clear night, you wouldn't even be aware that you are moving. It would also create a point of conflict, with some of the bugs adherening to the "sedentary dogma" (world is static and doesn't move) and some rebelious star gazing schoars turned outcasts outrageously claiming not only that the world is on the move ("And yet it moves!") - but that there are other worlds out there as well! The truth is of course a closely guarded Imperial secret, hidden from the general populace.

I also think the colorful sea slugs would make for a good inspiration for the alien creatures attacking the kingdom apart from prawn-like and crab-like enemies.

As far as the name goes, I'm currently set mostly on "Whorlrove" - rove for roving, moving and whorl for the way the shell is intricately curled. Is a bit of a mouthful. But it was meant to represent the shortsightedness of the inhabitants as well - they see and understand only the surface, but there is a lot more going on beneath.

I also had an idea for an are where the howling winds and the gaps in the shell would create a kind of eerie, mornful music. Not sure where to go with that though.
>>
>>67154077
Living on a giant, living orgasm you have to have some freaky bio-shit going on.
Maybe there's a parasite-cult that believe they can ascend/become stronger by feasting on the world itself, maybe some horrific tape-worm monster living deep inside the Traveller peddling a foul 'gut-magic' style witchcraft to the bugs it encounters.
>>
>>67133594
>soulkilling magic or device
>winds that wither the soul

I was toying with the idea that the Traveller is in some way connected with snail shamans, being a mollusc and all and some of the defending organism resembling sea slugs, but didn't know where to run with that.

>>67154203
Well /tg/ loves its biopunk and so do I. I just wouldn't go too far into the freaky territory, without keeping the comic, wholesome and a bit goofy feel of HK. No hard science, just cool and cute weirdness. Anything from symbiont charms (or equivalent), organic weapons and living items and armor, all seems ok as long as it doesn't break the theme too much.
>>
>>67154826
The Parasite would be a villanious force, not some biotech nightmare-peddler, to the pc's at least. Their presence rots and decays at the traveler and they draw strength from the resulting pestilence, therefore being antagonistic to the players just by being there.

We've discussed it before and even had a drawfag make a bit of concept art for it, but personally I dunno if that would really work
For one, the Crystals seem to have close ties to The Radiance in that they cast "a Light Refracted" - or essentially focus her influence through them. This can be evidenced by the Crystal Guardian's Dream Dialogue - in that all of it is in all caps, a sign of being taken in direct control by The Radiance.
Then again, there were such things as Crystal Golems mining away at the Crystal Peaks, but even then the crystals are a bit of a mystery in how they function or how closely related they are to The Radiance, or even if it just refracts the light of Higher Beings in general (IE The Pale King's "Pale Light", Radiance's Light, etc)

Dreamers are kinda weird.
For the most part, they acted as part of the Seal of Binding that kept the Black Egg Temple all sealed up. Chances are their dream powers drew on the Seal of Binding itself in order to fuck with The Vessel, such as putting them into an eternal dream or making very obvious-looking astral projections, but it also leaves their bodies extremely vulnerable not just to physical, but dream attacks as well (As you clearly see with The Vessel absorbing the fuck out of them in their entirety)
It definitely helped with adding a few dream rituals here and there, though.

Don't suppose anybody has any Hollow Knight styled cicada artwork? I'm using them as a primary antagonist right now. They spend so much time as grubs and so little time as adults that they are my Orc-like threat. Savages that burst out in great swarms. Though they mostly are just trying to live their lives to the fullest before their deaths and are more interested in stealing people's booze and pillaging in a drunken frenzy than the generic bloodshed that Orcs like.

An anon posted these a while back. Also, Cloth is canonically a cicada, so sometimes a bit of artistic license with a bug is fine.

Makes me wonder if human garbage would be seen as Eldritch artifacts in such a setting. Like the ma of the known world is simply the backyard of some household, and what they think are the barriers that mark the end of the Earth are just fence posts.

>And the other vessel that you get the Mothwing Cloak from got it's ass kicked by Hornet.
Is this confirmed or speculation?

I always just assumed he was another adventurer bug like Tiso, Cloth or Quirrel (kinda).

On a related note I would have liked it if there were more recurring NPC's or even just nameless adventuring bugs that would just pop up every now and then to patrol whatever area they spawned in. Shit like this is one of the reasons I love the idea of running or playing the HKRPG

It is implied that Hornet was challenging adventuring vessels to see if any of them were worthy of finishing the job. Still there is no concise confirmation from this, neither in the game or from the devs, so it is just an assumption

Anon you're making this more into Buggy STALKER than Hollow Knight at that point
I wouldn't mind seeing that in terms of Wyrms, though

Did he tho?

>Buggy STALKER setting
Shit, let's make one such Hollow Stalker place. A no-man's-zone in between three bug kingdoms, wracked by strange magics. Adventurers and vessels flock to the place like moths to radiance, for there are rumors that in the center of the Zone there's a magic artifact that can grant your wishes...

Well he thought he did with the Hollow knight, but actually did with the Knight. Unless you fucked up as a player I suppose.
To be fair he was dead at that point. No idea what killed him though.
