>This is a quest taking place in the Fullmetal Alchemist setting, beginning at roughly the same time as the original story. However, some parts of the setting have been slightly altered. You will be playing as a young alchemist, who will develop based on the choices made by the players. Remember that write-ins are always welcome, and to have fun.

You suddenly find yourself in a vast white expanse, nothing around you but a blank, endless void. You feel like you were in the middle of something important, but your head is hazy right now. You can't seem to recall much of anything. The only response you can muster is confusion. Before too long however, you hear a voice call out to you.

"Hello."

Startled, you look for the source of the noise. You find it sitting some distance in front of you. It's a figure shaped like a person, but featureless and white as the locale you find yourself in. You can only really make the figure out due to the bit of black haze that seems to be surrounding it.

"Who are you?" you ask, your voice a bit hesitant. You have no idea what's going on, but you'll take all the answers you can get.

"The obvious question eh, alchemist?" the figure replies, it's voice reverberating, as otherworldly as this place. "I will answer, but that seems an awful shame for a final utterance."

It's then that you turn to glance behind you. You see a giant door with a mural on it, covered in all kinds of alchemical symbols. As you look over it, the figure behind you speaks again.

"I am called by many names." it begins.

"I am the World."

"I am the Universe."

"I'm God."

"I am Truth."

"I am All."

"I am One."

"And I am also You."

You turn to see the figure pointing its finger straight at you.

"Now that I've answered you alchemist, allow me to grant you one final favor before the exchange is made. I'll give you a more fitting memory for your last words."

You're getting really nervous now.

"Would you care to state your name, alchemist?" the figure asks. Despite your anxiety, you feel compelled to answer.

>What is your name?

No.
Kimbley was a FASCINATING character.
But he was also a complete fucking psycho.
Besides, explosion alchemy is boring, and has exactly one application (blowing shit up), while other fields have more room for creative applications both in and out of combat.
I always liked that dude from the weird filler prologue they added for Brotherhood.
I wonder, did he ever receive a posthumous pardon, due to him turning out to be right all along?

It takes you a moment to even recall your name, your thoughts are so jumbled. But you eventually remember it.

"Iskander Steiner." you state.

"Excellent." the figure replies. "Relish the sound of that name in your ears, the feel of it escaping your lips. It's a gift from me. Now, it's time."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=302Xbp7LRTo&list=PLE36689FDB43CE335&index=6

You hear a loud creaking sound behind you and turn to see the door opening. A giant eye reveals itself, and shadowy tendrils of hands grab out at you from within.

"You have dared to knock on the door, and now the door is open." the figure continues to speak calmly as you struggle in vain to break free from the hands' shadowy grip. "I will show you the knowledge you seek. I will show you the Truth."

Even as you fight it, you're pulled into the blackness as the gate closes behind you. You feel yourself falling deeper, ever deeper into darkness. In that moment, you start to feel information flood your brain. As if all the knowledge in the world was becoming clear to you. So much that it feels like your head may burst. The pain is intense and you try to scream, but you find yourself unable to. Your attempts are are only met with a burning pain in your throat.

In your mind, you beg for it to stop. It's too much, you can't take it. You see a familiar figure appear in the distance. As you work through the pain, trying to reach out to them, suddenly everything stops. You're no longer in any pain. You're once again standing in front of the gate, now closed.

"How was it?" the figure asks.

You try to answer, but nothing comes. Not a single sound escapes your throat. As you struggle to speak, you hear your voice. But not from you.

"Of course, you can't answer me." the figure says, now with your voice. You see the figure make a giant, unnerving smile. "You will never speak again. For that was the toll you paid. Equivalent Exchange, of course. Right, alchemist?"

You try to scream again, but still make no sound. As the scene of this vast white expanse fades away, you find yourself in a dark room. You're feeling extremely light headed, and your nose meets with an awful stench. You just barely manage to look up and catch a glimpse of the source. What looks like a mangled corpse lies before you. Before you can get your thoughts in order, you feel your consciousness start to slip away. Your head hits the ground, and your eyes close.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

You wake up with a jolt. It's light now, so it must be daytime. You find that you're in a bed. You try once again to speak, but find that it's still impossible. So that must not have been a dream. As you calm yourself, you get a good look at your surroundings.

You find yourself...

That's right, this is your ratty little apartment. The supremely uncomfortable bed should have tipped you off. Yes, from the broken window giving you a clear view of Dublith outside to the walls with cracks running all over them, this is the place you call home.

You get out of bed and gather your thoughts. You're in different clothes than you were wearing yesterday. Someone must have changed them while you were passed out.

Wait, you passed out. It's then that it comes rushing back to you. You burst out of your bedroom and into the kitchen/foyer. This tiny little place only has three rooms and a bathroom. You run over to the last room. The one in which you attempted it it. Human transmutation.

You open the door, expecting the worst. But the thing from last night isn't there anymore. You look closer and see the remains of the outer edges of your Human Transmutation Circle, but the inside has been scrubbed away.

As you calm yourself, you try one last time to gather your thoughts. Last night, you attempted the ultimate taboo. The one thing every alchemist knows is forbidden. You tried to revive someone from the dead...

So guys. Thus far the best alchemy types I've seen us put forth are:
Magnets
Salt
Biology/Healing
Acids/Bases

What do anons think would be coolest thus far? Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I kind love salt alchemy. It'd be oddly OP at high levels. And imagine if we ever fought in/near an ocean, or literally any source of saltwater.

Shit, you're only thinking of NaCl, and therefore thinking too small.

At it's base, alchemy is just a catalyst for chemical reactions. We could be pumping out toxic salts, conductive salts, exotic chemicals, or even splitting salts apart for acids or bases. Do you know how much the human body relies on salt? The fluids in your body are all isotonic to your cells. Disrupt the salts there, and you cause massive cell death.

>>49102220
Light is not a particle, Anon.
>>
>>49102214
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt
>Salt is essential for human life, and saltiness is one of the basic human tastes. The tissues of animals contain larger quantities of salt than do plant tissues. Salt is one of the oldest and most ubiquitous food seasonings, and salting is an important method of food preservation.

We could be both the greatest cook, and horrifying combatant. You ever see what happens when you rip the salt out of people?

It's in animals. It's in plants.
Now imagine if we could transmute things INTO salt, or just outright REMOVE it.
>>
>>49102244

I mean, think about it. We could effectively fight the fuckin' homunculi assuming their bodies are at least vaguely human, which they ARE, given we got to see their insides during the show.

Also, I just realised, but sorry magnetism bros, magnetism is a FORCE, not matter.

I mean, it's a cool idea, but even kimblee didn't control "explosions" insofar as he controlled explosive chemical reactions. He was more 'chemist' than 'bomber', albeit focused on explosive reactions.

Personally I think we should avoid getting tied down to a gimmick.
Stay flexible, being good at a lot of different varieties of alchemy, without really being great at any of them.
We've committed the ultimate taboo, so we don't need to have physical circles anywhere on us, so there's no REASON to tie ourselves down to what we can do with just a few circles.

It's cool to have a theme, even a specialty, but we don't require circles, so we are also the ultimate generalist by default.
>>
>>49102412
No, no, man. We don't tie ourselves down to rust. I'm saying it's a tool in the salt alchemists arsenal. it's a thing we can use, but far from the only thing.

Like, we can manipulate salt in peoples bodies, salt in the air, saltwater, rust metals that are rustable, damage shit, it's all good.

>>49102429
Because rust alone gets hard countered by things, so we could focus on salt, and it's effects, rather than the chemical reaction of rusting things.

>>49102432
Still needed circles. The stones worked by transmuting things from nothing, by using the souls as material

>>49102445
Except it can? Literally every living thing, plant AND animal, *needs* salt, and has it in their bodies. It also absorbs moisture, and can cause rust.
It's pretty expansive, whereas magnetism isn't even a chemical reaction.
>>
>>49102415
Anon, oxidation as a process takes time. You can't just throw salt at something and expect it to rust. May as well just focus on metal if you're trying to be a walking rust monster.

Primarily because Mustang is a Colonel. He has some pretty impressive resources at his disposal. We can't assume we'll have those same resources, and should probably assume we WON'T.
>>
>>49102565
There's a reason Mustang isn't the protagonist of FMA, and why Ed has such varied abilities with lots of utility.

Think of how many times Ed has used his abilities to open locked doors, hide from persuers, reached higher elevation, create weapons, or all sorts of other important things that salt can't do (but magnetism can).

Except he got to that point BECAUSE it was highly lethal.

Do.. have you forgotten that alchemists in FMA are primarily combat focused? The entire Shou Tucker arc was there to say "YOU THINK WE GIVE A SHIT ABOUT YOUR MEDICINE? I CAN'T USE THAT TO KILL SHIT!" and he was losing face constantly till people found out he could, in fact, use it to kill shit.

Alchemists in amestris aren't... really researchers into the non-lethal/utilitarian parts of alchemy. They're full force "Dude did you see me blow up that baby?"

They're a military organisation, remember.

>>49102605
You realise we could do all that shit too, right? Ed had no specialization, he was just using the basics of "Change X to Y"
Hell, after opening the door, mustang could've done it too.
And honestly, there kinda wasn't a 'true' protagonist, since I always saw it as multiple stories in the same setting, GoT style, to a lesser degree honestly. There was the 'main' plot with Ed, the military plot with mustang, and others.

>>49102643

And because he was, y'know, good at the whole "being an officer" thing.
If all our alchemy is, is a big fancy gun/bomb/weapon, then the only time it's USEFUL is when such a thing is needed. We may as well just bring an actual gun/bomb/other weapon. Roy made a name for himself by being a human hiroshima at Ishval. And considering he then spent the rest of his life on what amounts to an elaborate suicide quest, until realizing that his death won't fix anything, it fucked him up pretty god damn bad.
>have you forgotten that alchemists in FMA are primarily combat focused?
No. But have you forgotten that VERSATILITY IS GOOD? I'm not suggesting we should try to be Marcoh. I'm suggesting we should NOT try to emulate Roy. Roy's cool. Roy's awesome. But Roy's cripplingly overspecialized.
We should focus on fundamentals, not worry about a gimmick, and (should we eventually decide to adopt one) pick a gimmick that's not hilariously narrow.

Y'know what salt does? Electrolysis. We could also use it to cure people of salt imbalances causing heart diseases, hypertension, and the like.
We could also get creative and use it in food.

Now, I'm not saying we 100% need to get salty right here right now no matter what, but saying it has no uses apart from combat is stupid. It's not fucking flame alchemy, man.

Invisible Flame Alchemist
>>
That's right. You tried to bring your best friend Marc back to life. You had been together since you were kids, and he was always there to support you. He was like the older brother you never had. Like you, he was not too well off. He joined the military to try and make a better life. But he never came back from Ishval. It's been years since then, but the wounds still haven't healed. You began researching human transmutation, the thing even your teacher stressed that you should never do. All for this. And it was a complete failure.

You drop to your knees as just stay there for a while. The realization that this was all for nothing has overwhelmed you.

After a while, you hear the front door open. Someone comes in. You get up and turn to see who it is.

"You're up." a familiar voice says. "I'm the one who cleaned that up for you last night. Honestly, when we met on Yock Island, I didn't think I'd have to keep taking care of you even now."

It's your other close friend, Leah Crawford. You've known her since childhood as well, and she often spent time with both you and Marc.

She's wearing her heavy coat as always, even when she isn't out in the woods hunting. Her rifle is slung from her shoulder. You can't help but wonder if she freaks anyone out walking around with it like that all the time.

"You tried to bring Marc back, didn't you?" she stares straight at you. She doesn't usually emote much, and most people might think now was no different, but you can tell by her eyes that she's upset. "Even though your teacher told you specifically not to. She's going to be furious, you know."

Leah sets down the bags of groceries she brought in, and starts working in the kitchen.

"You've been out for quite a while, so you must be hungry. I'll fix something up." She goes on for a while, but stops after a period of silence. "Isk, you're being really quiet. This isn't like you. What's wrong?"

You've convinced me. Paper/Ink alchemist is sounding more and more hype. It'd help our communication difficulties too.

Paper that can be made into the hardness of metal for stopping bullets
>Put it under our clothes, extremely lightweight, durable armor
>Origami crane/Paper planes with messages on them, that we can send out
>Ink/Paper combo to have a single piece of paper that we can control the ink on, so we can 'speak' quickly
Shit man, I'm getting hype.

The metals group is a decent choice, but was done to death in the show.

The alkaline/alkali metals have good combat application, but little else.

The nonmetals and Halogens are downright nasty.

Noble gases, meh.

Most of the actinoids/lanthanoids don't occur naturally.

the metalloids are alright, but lack any sort of combat application.

Plus, basing your starting character off of countering kimblee is dumb. He's curreently in prison, and a very, very late game enemy.

And at the end of the day, thanks to our entering the gate, we're not limited to specific types of alchemy, this is mainly just saying our theme, really.

You decide to skip trying to convey things without words, and start foraging around for paper and a pen. You eventually find them, then write down that your voice was taken when you attempted human transmutation. You show it to Leah.

"You lost your voice?" her normally calm voice has a hint of concern in it here. "Well... some would consider you lucky. We can only be thankful that was all that was taken for your rash decision."

A few more minutes pass, and Leah finishes making some stew. She sets some out for both you, and you begin eating. You didn't realize how hungry you were.

"Why did you become an alchemist, Isk?" Leah asks, stopping in the middle of her meal. "The way I heard form your teacher that you kept begging to be taught. Was it really just leading to this? In a way, you've betrayed her trust. I miss Marc too, you know. But you didn't learn alchemy for this, did you?"

Honestly, I'm currently torn between Salt and Paper.
On one hand, get salty motherfuckers.
On the other hand, with Paper/Ink alchemy we can actually communicate with people really easily, and more importantly *quickly*, or at least more important that outright writing things out.

I'm leaning towards paper/ink, currently. Plus, ruining other circles with our ink and paper just really appeals to me.

You begin to write down a response. You learned alchemy purely because you wanted to learn. Knowledge for its own sake. Though you will admit you did just find alchemy in particular really cool.

"I know you always loved to study." Leah says after reading your note. "But there are some things we just can't do no matter who much we learn."

The two of you finish eating, and Leah stands up.

"What now?" she asks. "Are you going to tell your teacher? Or are you going to avoid her? I'd understand if you did."

You shudder at the thought of your teacher angry. But maybe staying away would just make her even more mad when she eventually found out.

"Otherwise, you still need to find work." Leah goes on. "You can barely keep the payments up on this place. Not that I'm in a much better situation. You've been shutting yourself away in your study. I think this is a good a wake up call as any to find out where you plan to go in life. There's always the military, after all."

The military, huh? You consider the idea. State alchemists do make a lot of money, and not to mention the exclusive research materials. But there's something else you have to do first.

You write it out on a piece of paper. You're going to see your teacher.

"Alright." Leah nods after reading the message. "Get changed, and we'll go together. You probably don't want to go in those pajamas I put you in."

You look down at your state of dress, and go back to your room to change. On your own, this time.

Afterwards, you and Leah leave the apartment and head over to where your teacher lives. Curtis Meats. Her husband runs this butcher shop.

You stop just short of the door. You're starting to get cold feet. You glance over to Leah, and she gives you a thumbs up.

You knock.

After a bit, you see your teacher's husband, the huge Sieg Curtis, open the door.

"Iskander. Good to see you." he greets. "Izumi is feeling alright today, so she should be able to see you. Honey, Isk is here."

"Oh really?" you hear your teacher say, as she emerges from deeper inside. "I haven't seen you in months. Finally come here to beg me for some more lessons again?"

You're sweating bullets.

I'm not sure if this is the best place to start but, I have a character, and I plan to transform him into a Alchemist soon. It's a Moros in Mage, the Awakening.
Matter 3, Life 3 (Yes, I know), and Mind 2.

I'm not actually looking for tips for mage itself (not denying it either) but asking for books about Alchemy. What is it and what I can do with it.

If possible, a RPG that has a good alchemy system for me to have some ideias.

Thanks in advice. If this is the wrong thread, I'll delete the post.

There's nothing to do now but do it. You pull out a piece of paper and start writing a message, beginning with the ever eloquent 'I fucked up', and going on to explain your situation.

Your teacher is confused for this whole process, but she takes the paper when you hand it to her, as you brace yourself for impact.

You can see her mood change as she reads the note, and before you know it, you catch a foot to your face, knocking you back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSs9H1ANmL4&index=7&list=PLE36689FDB43CE335

"You stupid little punk!" Izumi shouts after you. "The single thing I told you not to do! If I had known that little kid who came by every day begging me to learn alchemy would end up pulling this, I would have put you out of your misery myself!"

Izumi starts walking toward you again, but stops. She pukes up some blood, and Sieg rushes over to hold her up.

"Careful not to exert yourself too hard." he warns.

"I knew I shouldn't have taken any students." Izumi goes on. "I take a single pupil, and he goes against everything I say. You idiot."

By this point, Leah has come over to help you up, and you've walked back over to the doorstep.

"Please forgive him." Leah insists. "It may have been reckless, but he just wanted to see our friend again. Surely you can understand, Mrs. Curtis."

"Oh, I can understand, alright." your teacher replies. "All too well. I renounce you as my student, Iskander. But you can perform alchemy without a circle now, anyway. You don't need me. Go on, do as you like. I need to go lay down."

Izumi heads back in, and Seig addresses you one last time.

"Sorry about that, Isk." he apologizes. "It's a touchy subject. Don't be too discouraged. You're still welcome back here any time."

The man follows his wife inside.

"Well, that's that." Leah says. "Honestly, that didn't go as badly as I expected. So you plan to join the military? Even after what happened to Marc?"

You write out another note. Yes, you plan to join the military. What else can you even do? There's nowhere else you can learn more.

"Well, I guess it's the easiest way to make something of yourself, true enough." Leah replies after reading. "So we're going to Central. Let's take care of any loose ends we have here. I have something I need to take care of myself."

You expect to head to either your apartment or Leah's, but you go through a series of back alleys. You've never been here before. How does Leah know this place?

"Alright. This is it." Leah lets out a deep breath. "I just have to settle things right here, then we can go to Central."

You see a tunnel leading into what seems to be a bar. There's a sign above it. 'Devil's Nest'.

You decide not to rock the boat, and just follow Leah inside. The tow of you pass through the tunnel, and you come the find a large man with white hair and sideburns. His smile fades as he sees Leah.

"Woah, Leah, what are you doing here right now?" he asks, worried. "The boss is not a nice guy you know, if you don't have the money, he is just gonna get really angry. Do you have the money?"

"No, I don't." Leah replies to the man. "But I need to go to Central. My father's debts aren't ever getting cleared if I stay here."

"Ooh, that's not good, little lady." the man responds. "The boss is never gonna let that fly. Hell, he holds us running away from the military over our heads constantly. Sometimes he uses it as an excuse to not even pay us. You don't want to know what he'll do to a girl like you."

"I don't have any other choice." Leah says. "I'm not staying here to work off my father's debt for my entire life. I need to go."

The man looks worried, but lets the two of you pass.

"Just be careful what you say, alright?" he warns.

Inside, you see a few patrons and employees about. On one seat is an older man with gray hair, wearing a suit and smoking a cigar. He must be the boss. He's flanked by a man with a sword and a woman with a tattoo on part of her face. Neither really look comfortable being there.

"Mister Donovan." Leah addresses him.

You decide not to try anything. Leah should have this handled.

"This is my friend Iskander." she tells the man. "He's a very skilled alchemist. He's going to Central to become a State Alchemist, and I'm going to join him."

"Oh really now?" Donovan laughs slightly. "And why would I ever let you do that? You have a lot of money left to pay me. No need to go to Central, you've got assets right here. Your house, all the stuff in it. That rifle could fetch a pretty penny."

You see Leah tense up and tighten her grip on the strap of her rifle.

"I can't do that." she replies. "I need it. If I join the military, you'll get your money, trust me."

"Oh no, you're just gonna run away." Donovan snaps back. He lowers his gaze and furrows his brow. "I know how this goes, so let me just tell you right now. If you try to leave this town, I will guarantee you never make it. I'll sick my chimeras on you."

The man motions to the two people to his sides.

"Your alchemist pal won't be able to save you then." he goes on. "Now, you're looking a bit jumpy. I don't trust it. Hand over the gun. Now."

The man with the sword walks up to take the rifle, but Leah jerks it away from him when he goes to touch it.

"Do not touch this rifle." Leah says, firmly. "Ever."

"Alright, that's enough of this." Donovan claps his hands. "Chimeras, take care of these troublemakers."

Reluctantly, the two of them inch forward. The man from the door also comes out, as does one more man.

"Sorry about this." the woman says. "Just take it easy and we can still resolve this without anyone getting hurt."

The four people slowly creep closer to you and Leah.
