You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

Currently, you were receiving some concerning news from Tank, who seemed to notice that something was amiss. Definitely not a good thing, since you were sitting inside a pirate ship docked inside a goddamn pirate hideout.

"Pleeeeeeease don't tell me Carly's thinking of backing out on me." You groan.

Tank indicates that Carly is not the source of the issue. At least this time. Well, kinda.

"Can you be a bit more specific?" You roll your eyes.

Namely, he notices that more pirates are boarding the Long Claw and leaving it.

"Well, it's probably just maintenance crews fixing up ships, right?"

Maybe, but Tank is not entirely convinced. These guys certainly didn't LOOK like regular maintenance guys.

Damn, it looked like Carly some of Carly's pirate crew was gonna mutiny on her! Now, from your experience, pirate revolts and mutinies were usually quite common. After all, pirates generally only tolerated their leaders as long as they could consistently bring in loot to keep them appeased. You've run into more than one pirate gang that had torn itself apart when times went bad and various pirates within the crew thought it was the best time to seize power.

Was Carly having less success than she was giving off? Were the pirates not happy with her policies?

Or did somebody leak your plans to a rival of hers?

Either way, you needed to warn her something was up!

Well, you basically look like Carly, so... well... you could probably just pretend to be her and waltz your way over to where the real Carly is. It could totally work!

Probably.

Maybe.

Tank, of course, thinks it's a bad idea.

"Don't be such a worrywart, Tank! I can take care of myself!" You sigh.

Tank insists on coming with you.

"If you do that, then they'd KNOW I'm not Carly!" You groan. "You stay behind and make sure Scott is safe, all right?"

Tank reluctantly agrees.

All right, so now you just had to figure out if you could go it alone or ask one of Carly's crew to help. She seemed to trust them enough, but you couldn't be totally sure yourself...

Nah, you could totally do this alone! Totally!

This wasn't going to backfire on you in any way!

Thankfully, you have access to Carly's quarters, which means you have access to her wardrobe, too. You quickly dig into her closet and drawers, assembling a collection of shirts, pants, and overcoat that most closely matched what your remembered Carly was wearing.

Man, you kinda miss wearing actual clothes. One of the sacrifices you had to make serving in the Accord.

Anyways, you quickly pull on your little selection of pirate clothing, noting how the shirt was a bit tight in the chest. However, you pause as you approaching the open loading ramp, where you could see dozens of pirates boarding and disembarking, loading and unloading crate and cargo of various kinds. What if one of them saw through your disguise...?

...and nobody so much as bats and eye toward you as you stride down the loading ramp and past all of the assorted pirates.

H-holy crap! It's actually working! You fight the urge to happily skip the rest of the way as you confidently stride deeper into the base.

And that's when you see that Carly's ship is not the only one here. As you move deeper into the hideout, you could see similar hangar spaces carved into the ground similar to the one Long Claw is docked in. You could see a handful of other destroyer and frigate sized ships, and about a dozen smaller corvette class ships. Carly had her own damn little flotilla!

No, you weren't jealous of her at all!

Unfortunately, you now realize that you don't actually KNOW where Carly is in this damn base! Maybe you should ask for directions... but that would look weird coming from the supposed captain since Carly was supposed to now the place...

You feel like you're heading in the right direction, as the crowd of random pirates milling about starts to drop off sharply, replaced by more purposeful and heavily armed pirates posted at regular intervals, obviously guards. A few of them give you curious, confused looks, as if they'd just been hit with a sense of deja vu.

That was good, that meant Carly must have passed by not so long ago!

You quicken your pace, so as not to give the guards enough time to mull about how there might be two Carlys, and finally you see a larger group of various pirates up ahead. And leading them was Carly herself as they headed to what looked to be a fortified meeting room.

Damn, you didn't have much time.

You watch as the gaggle of pirate officers follow Carly into the meeting room, and the two large blast doors leading into the room slowly slide closed with a loud but low WHUMP. That door definitely was too thick to just kick down, well, for you at least. You were pretty certain Tank could force them open on his own, but unfortunately he wasn't here, and you were starting to really feel his absence now.

However, the mechanisms keeping the door shut didn't seem that complicated, and there were only two pirates guarding the door. If you were quick enough, you could probably get the drop on them.

Then again, you've learned from various raids that doors weren't necessarily the only way to get into a room...

It was probably better to find an alternate path in this case. You quietly shuffle off to a side hall and look around for a vent of some kind. Goddamn, maybe if you had Artya with you, she'd know a way. You groan as you search the old and dripping concrete walls and ceiling. You manage to catch sight of a hatch placed squarely in the ground. Leading to some kind of underground tunnel system, no doubt. Probably more spacious, but you weren't sure where it would lead.

Your eyes go up to see a vent that looked to lead into the room. But... it looked kinda small, and even with your small figure, you could get stuck, or worse, make too much noise and get found out...

Well, you suppose you had to take the vents... not that it was something you particularly liked. You manage to climb up some exposed pipes to reach the vent cover, which you're able to pull off with a solid tug before crawling into it.

Thankfully, the vent wasn't too narrow. You could fairly comfortably fit inside, but it was still fairly tight. You start crawling forward, hoping that you weren't make too much noise as you worm your way through the metal vents...

And before you know it, you find yourself directly above the conference room, where you could see about a dozen other pirates gathered around an old conference table. Carly, meanwhile, was sitting casually at one end, reclining back in her chair and her feet planted firmly on the table where they totally were not supposed to be. Didn't seem like the other pirates minded.

"I have to say, Captain, you've done good by us these past couple of years." One of the pirates, a deathly skinny one, spoke up. "But some of us are getting a bit... concerned."

You decide to hold off for a bit to hear what these guys have to say. Skinny Pirate apparently didn't seem too thrilled about Carly's leadership at the current moment.

"You've been going farther and farther out into Dark Space." Skinny Pirate says in an accusing tone, referring to the general slang for the uncharted and unexplored regions beyond the Frontier. "And not tellin' us what yer looking for. No loot or trade ships going out there, so what's so valuable?"

"And you've been raiding pioneer stations from all three blocs." Cyborg Pirate adds in. "Drawing a lot of heat on us."

"Some of us here be thinkin' you're holding out on us." Bearded Pirate concludes, leaning forward threateningly.

"Ohoho." Carly chuckles, seemingly not concerned at all that three of her subcaptains seemed to be defying her. "I don't pry into your personal lives, and you feel like you all want to know mine?"

"You've done good by us, but a Captain's no good if we got now trust in her." Skinny Pirate points out.

The tension in the room begins to fill rather rapidly, as you see hands silently reaching for weapons. You weren't sure who was on which side, and you had a feeling nobody in the room did, either.

And there Carly was, an overconfident look on her face as always.

Still, the things the were talking about that she was up to were a bit concerning...

"So, are you challenging my leadership?" Carly raises an eyebrow as she finally takes her feet off the table and leans forward, a bloodthirsty smile on her face. "If you feel so strongly about it, you can always request a duel. Just you and me, decide who the better pirate is!"

Skinny Pirate's eyes dart from side to side to see if anybody was willing to support him.

And that's when Carly shoots him right between the eyes.

You wince as all hell breaks loose before Skinny Pirate's body even hits the ground. Almost immediately, the other gathered captains roar in a combination of surprise and fury as they all turn on each other. Carly immediately sprints across the table and kicks Cyborg Pirate right in the face before you lose track of her in the free for all.

Goddamnit, of course Carly always had to escalate the situation! You grit you teeth as you slam your elbow down on the ventilation grate, knocking it loose and sending the grate dropping down to the ground below and bouncing off some poor pirate's head. You then take a breath and drop down the opening, landing firmly on your feet on the center of the table.

"Carly! CARLY!" You cry out, trying to catch sight of her in the melee as pirates rip, tear, stab, and cut at each other...

However, you're caught off guard when Bearded Pirate barrels into your side, tackling you right off the table and sending the both of you sprawled on the ground. Your sidearm is knocked from your hands and it clatters and slides away on the concrete just out of your reach. You try to scramble to your feet as Bearded Pirate draws a knife with a grimace.

"Nothin' personal, Captain, but ye gotta go." You grumbles.

Shit, you were at a bit of a disadvantage here. You WERE taught close combat techniques in the Academy, but you'd rather have a gun in your hands...

Looks like you had no choice, you were going to have to take this guy hand to hand. Already, the lessons from training flash through your head, years of drilling and actual practice creating all kinds of scenarios and visualizations in your head. Everything besides you and your opponent seems to melt away, leaving you to focus on your one singular target.

Well, you could try and go for a quick and direct alpha strike right to his throat or solar plexus (or even lower) to try and end the fight before that knife even became a problem.

Or, you could attempt to disarm him and fight him on more even ground.

OR, try and take the knife for yourself and use it against him!

Well, there was a simple way to handle this. Bearded Pirate was keeping his guard high, completely expecting an attack against his arms or head. However, there was one place where he WASN'T guarding.

You swing your boot out and slam it right into Bearded Pirate's groin. You feel something soft and delicate give away and Bearded Pirate's eyeballs almost pop out of his skull and his teeth clench in pain. With a wordless wheeze, Bearded Pirate drops the knife and just topples over.

Well, that was easy.

You glance over and see that most of the other pirates were still locked in a melee. You see Carly kick the Cyborg Pirate away and you quickly pull her back into cover behind a support pillar.

"Goddamnit! Should've seen this totally predictable backstab coming!" Carly groans. "Things would be different if I had bolts here! Thanks for the assist, by the way, Sis. You looked fuckin' badass coming down from the ceiling like that!"

"Well, Bolts and Tank aren't here so we have to figure this out on our own." You ignore Carly's compliment for the moment. "Is there a way out of here?"

"What? But the fun is just getting started!" Carly grins evilly. "Gotta kill every last motherfucker in this room!"

Well, normally, I would agree with cleaning house so they won't follow us, but it would just leave a huge fucking power vacuum amongst the pirates, and the chaos will eventually spread to civilized space.

"Fine, we'll clean house, but we're going to have WORDS after this!" You grumble as you double check your sidearm.

"Yeah, yeah." Carly rolls her eyes as she draws a sword. "Let's do this!"

By this point, most of the pirate captains had been mopped up. Cyborg Pirate looks to have recovered, and appears to be actively hunting for Carly. There's a couple other pirates circling around, carefully eying each other to see who would make the first move.

"Just like old times, huh?" Carly grins as she pats your shoulder and points to Cyborg Pirate. "How about we take out that fuckin' tin can over there?"

And in perfect unison, you and Carly both unleash a flurry of concentrated and synchronized blows against Cyborg Pirate, both your fists landing against Cyborg Pirate's chest at the same time, forcing the poor pirate back as he stumbles backward from the numerous blows. Finally, he backs up into the table, stopping his backward movement.

You glance at Carly and she glances back. With a silent nod, you both whip out your feet, kicking Cyborg Pirate right int he knees to bring him down. However, you get the feeling that Carly deliberately chose the side where Cyborg Pirate WASN'T augmented. You probably broke or at least sprained a few toes when your boot meets steel instead of flesh.

Nevertheless, Cyborg Pirate is brought to his knees, and both you and Carly aim devastating spin kicks slamming into the opposite sides of his head. There's a sickening CRACK, and Cyborg Pirate slumps to the ground, his augments still twitching.

"Haha! We still got it, Sis!" Carly chortles as she hugs you.

"That's great and all." You grumble as you look around the room. It looks like the other pirates have pretty much finished each other off. "But I think we should get moving."

"Right, right." Carly laughs. "I suppose we should-"

And that's when the entire room rumbles, like an earthquake.

"Well, that's not good." Carly groans.
