Recap Thread 2

You've settled into a sort of mechanical reactionary state-
Your enemies are, essentially, phantoms.

Suicidal and homicidal phantoms.
Or maybe not suicidal? Homicidal isn't up for discussion, they are most definitely giving their all to kill you.

But whether they're being directed to attack you in some sort of attempt to drown you in their spilt blood, or are just reliving whatever shattered remnant of history this village seems to represent isn't something you're personally privvy to.

Of course, this is all moot- The fact of the matter is that ill-armed and armoured shades of past invaders aren't going to do much than potentially tire you sometime in the future. Maybe tomorrow.

You're thankful for the repetition, though. Boring as it is, it's the perfect thing to take your mind off the fact that there's a small, incredibly loud, and boisterous moth-girl carefully pacing across the giant skull that covers your spider-half, detailing your history in a carefully embellished story.

"- and her steps through that small town had only started to echo, marching inexorably into story- No, Legend!"
"I thought she jussst met a few people. And Jin?"
"Important people, though!"

The snake pauses briefly, absorbing what she can.

"I think it wasn't that important."
"Bah! That's because you're not as good at stories."
"Fine. What isss next?"

Nin takes a breath, and you lightly brace yourself before you catch another screaming berzerker on your spear- This one is almost wearing armour. And he had real weapons, too. Smithed weapons. Still ghostly phantom weapons. Weapons that are actually weapons but not real. Yes.

"As her steps shook the village, things began to stir to the surface, and the forest faced its first invasion in so many years-"

Spiderpanties.. does that mean reproductive bits are in front? That seems awkward, if only for 2 giant spider parents.

It was mentioned at some point I can't bother to source that the act is done at the front, but eggs are laid at the back due to spidermagic.

You aren't actually certain at this point in time, but you suspect that your daughter may be cursed.

You grunt lightly as you smash through a log, not stopping your stride in the least, spear ready.

Of course, it isn't the dark magic kind of curse. She isn't withering away, there's no spreading mark that will claim her soul or anything else of the sort. It's more the old sort of curse. The kind that the gods seem to like 'gifting' to people.

May your life be an interesting one.

You'd laughed in the past. Was it the paladin? No, no. The alchemist. With her absurd glasses, and all the dolls. She insisted they were golems, and they could certainly fight, you suppose.

But when she'd told you that this was the greatest of all curses, you'd laughed. Who wouldn't want an interesting life? An exciting one? Adventure and love and unseen vistas, monsters and dungeons and cities.

And she'd given you an odd smile, and said that you'd understand eventually.

And now your daughter is growing too fast, fighting things far too large, and generally making you feel all too old. So you sent her to the local town to get some armour made, so you could worry less.

And she comes back to tell you that there's skeletons moving about in the ruins trying to dig things up.

So you did your duty. The kind that extends across your species. You sent up the signal, and the arachne gathered, and away you went to war.
A small war. And likely a short one as well.

You shatter a few unlucky skeletons as you start to charge, your spear smashing old bones without effort.
And your daughters make you proud; Sara guiding some burning ball of light through the shadows of night to sear bones into ash, Aria joyously joing you in combat, crudely smashing skeletons into dust and shards. And Lyra waving her hand as she deflects a blow, the lights in the creatures eyes simply going out from her gesture.
>>
>>47914604
Married to the road.
>>
>>47914620

See, this is why your daughter worries you.

The fight is short, and as dirty as you though it would be.

Lyra is quick to pull her new trick a few more times. And Aria even ends the fight- taking the necromancer from the fight with one blow.

As the sounds of combat dwindle into celebrating spiders, there's only one thing you're utterly certain of.

You're going to train them until they can't even stand.

_______________________________________________________________

"-for the forest and ruins are their domain, and they will hold it safe, for the sake of all!"
"Iss that true?"
"Of course it is! A herald speaks no lies!"
"Moths do. Lyra, iss that true?"

You bring your attention back from the fight, sweeping an axe wielding shades legs before pinning him to the ground with your own.
"Hmm?"
"That there were walking skeletons? Bones?"
"The necromancer, yes? It is true."

The snake is quiet a moment while Nin folds her arms over her chest.
"Dead things should stay dead."
She nods sagely to herself.

Nin clears her throat.
"And with the forest safe, a new page turns for the Queen- A stalwart companion joins her side, her bravery unequaled and-"

I doubt we will get large. I think size is not going to increase except artificially (e.g. magic golem body to ride in/command).

We probably can still get larger, since Tyrant Arachne is Social/Physical hybrid there the more physical branches are probably going to get bigger.
Also natural growth still hasn't finished.
>>
>>47914878
well, even if we don't expand, we're PRETTY HUGE already. I don't know how dense, however.
>>
>>47914929
I'm expecting any further growth to be less physical and more mystical. We're heading into the area of legends and gods, soon enough.

I'm thinking eldritch, echoing voice, glowing eyes, unearthly presence - sorta that direction.

They are still abnormal, especially Elle and even the Twin evolved after only 2 years or so when it took mom ( a unusually active arachne) 2 decades.
>>
>>47915237
I have to proclaim that elle isn't normal, given how she's the only arachne in town.
The twins though, they are totally normals.
>>
I had a proposal for when we get further in the recap: we still haven't sent mom a letter, maybe we could talk about our journey after leaving the nest there?

. . . 3 days anon, she cried for 3 days! Write your poor mother!
>>
>>47915360
we need to write everyone letters.
It's just that would take a bit of time, and we are lazy, despite how proactive we are.
>>
Every single one of Nialla's children are obsessive to some extent.

Twins = Hunting
Elle = Clothes
Sara = Magic
Aria = Being strong like mom
Lyra = Adventure? Maybe just "Doing STUFF" would be a better description seeing how ADHD she is.
>>
>>47915262
>>47915263
well, now that her BLUMENKRANZ clothing empire has started, she's strayed from normality

but that wasn't due to terminal Nialla or Lyra exposure, that was a side effect of trading highs corrupting an otherwise good girl

>>47915535
Yes but she hoards her secret rock collection away from everyone, might do the same for magic rocks.

Also, she might not be inclined to flaunt them if she is worried about being seen to need outside help to be strong, that's almost the same as appearing weak.
>>
Hungry.
And tired.

But tired you can ignore. Tired is the slowly dulling edge, the noises growing louder or quieter while you fight to keep moving. Tired is burning legs and arms.

Hunger is sharp. Hunger is teeth digging inside out, worse than any fight, worse than the blow you took to escape. Hunger is trembling, hunger is dying. And when the hunger turns to sleep, it is over.

So your eyes are open. And despite everything, you move forwards. You've run so far, but your nose knows where you are. Almost at the river. You'll be safe there. They won't come this far. All the adults were scared of the spiders. They showed you a picture when you were younger, scratched into the walls of your home. Remember, your mother told you.

Your eyes burn a little as you move forward again.

There's an odd smell. Two?

And through the trees, you can see them.

Spiders.

The drawings weren't accurate, you decide. The legs are there, but they're big, so much bigger.

You lie down beneath the brush, doing your utmost to quiet your breathing. They couldn't be that strong, could they? And- This is still your side of the river. The wolves side of the river.

So you push yourself back to your feet.

And a careless little voice in the back of your head whispers promises to you again.

What if you fought them?

What if you made them your new pack?

The others are so scared of them. You could take your home back. They wouldn't even fight. They'd run from drawings.

And so you moved to hunt them. Circling them, driving them. The little one made lights, but she made scared noises. And hunger and fear smashed together into blind confidence, and you moved with all the speed of your ancestors, hurtling towards them faster than they could move.
>>
>>47915474
Not to that degree. Our sibs had evolved by the time we returned from the Wendigo forest, which was before/around Shez's first birthday, and Shez is significantly older than us.
>>
>>47915621

And the red one turned, and you could see her eyes on you in the split second before her fist connected with your head, and the world turned quiet and dark.

Waking up hurt.
The hunger was still there, but that meant you were alive. It was a good.

Your head felt like the time you'd jumped off the rock.

You open your eyes, nose twitching with the scent of something- of food- nearby.
And there is a spider in front of you, close enough to touch.

Your feet are beneath you in a second, and you move-

And you arms tug against something that won't give and your feet slide away, and you crash back to the ground again.

You whimper. A weak noise, but that's all you have left. You can't even fight. They won.
She's talking. The forest language. You remember Mom's lessons, though none of the pack's children ever satisfied the adults with their grasp of it.
"Hello? Yes, Hello? Can you understand me?"

And she talks about not hurting you, about food.
She unties you, but she is watching.
But she gives you food, water.

And she asks you why you attacked.
And you tell her.

And the questions continue and your answers do too, even if you can only half understand each other. It's hard to keep the heat from your eyes.

And she sets you free, gives you more food.
And her hand finds your ears. And she's gentle and it's been so long since you had even that small bit of happiness, and your tail is wagging behind you.

And she asks you what you'll do. Where'll you'll go.
But-

She beat you, didn't she?
She beat you, and you bowed your head.

And things click in your head, and there's a spider shaped space there that makes you feel safe and happy, a strong red girl with a soft voice and careful hands.
>>
>>47915638

She's your pack now.
And you tell her, and she takes you. Even as weak and small as you are, she picks you up and takes you back, and you have a pack again, and everything is already better.

And then she makes you take a bath.

"Mhm. And the Queen's companions grew by one more, the wolf taking her rightful place at her side, an infallible warrior to defend her highness, a guard and a knight."

Nin swings her wings around for effect as she continues.
"Of course, the warmth of the days that followed can't be understated. Sheszka recovered with care and gentleness- And the Queen's father returned, beginning another chapter of her story-"

You... aren't particularly good at forests, to be honest.
While you possess a certain level of navigational ability- as both an adventurer and a scholar- Your specialty tends towards ruins. Structures. Methodical things. Not the wild growth of an untamed millenia old forest.

On the other hand, you have been here before. Not at night, and that one monster got you turned around but it wasn't for so long.
You're on your way back to your wife, and your children to be. It's a bit odd knowing that your children will hatch. From eggs.

You push onwards through the forest.

It doesn't really matter, you suppose. Nialla is- You love her. That much is something that won't change.
So you're on your way to her home, your home. The ruins were a dud, in any case. Half was ruined- moreso that the name would imply- and the other half was long ransacked.

You step into the clearing.

You're... fairly certain this is the right one. You can't actually see far enough up to tell if there's a nest in the tree, but you're pretty sure of this one. There's no ladder, but... you've been gone for a while.

And in any case-
Hm?

There's an arachne making her way down the side of the tree, something in her hands.
She stops short of the forest floor, staring at you.

It's a wolf in her hands. You remember your wife giving you a rundown of the races and monsters of the woods. And the Arachne herself is red, and young. A little gangly, with that half-finished look to the shape of her face. A teenager, or somewhere thereabouts.

Spiders are asleep, posting moths
>>
>>47916694

The wolf whines, and she finishes descending, letting the other girl run for the bushes lining the clearing.

"I- ah. Sorry. I was sure this was the right tree, miss. I'll just- I'll just be going now."

You back a step away as her expression worsens, eyes narrowing and glinting in the filtered starlight, arms crossed over her chest.
You don't want to offend an Arachne. Especially not in the woods, at night of all-

"I'll leave, right? Ah, no need to bother you, my apologies-"
"Mom is still asleep."

What?
Her voice is- it's irritated, a little sad, a little familiar.

"Wha?"
"Mom. Nialla? You are Erics, yes?"

Your feet root themselves to the ground, an absolute pressure suddenly making it's presence known, weighing down on your feet, your back, your chest.

"I- Yes. I am. But then- You're-"
"Lyra. My name is Lyra."

That's not- This isn't right. She's already- She's so big.
There weren't any traps. Not in- not in the ruins, not in the forest. You're sure, you were so sure- There wasn't any magic, no reaction, no runes, no triggers, nothing.
It wasn't- it wasn't that long, was it? You didn't lose track of time. The sun rose and set, and your children-

You're babbling, and she grabs your shoulder, giving you a sharp shake, and your eyes focus back on her face.

Her hair is the same. Her eyes, too. Bits of your wife's face jump out at you from your-
From your daughter's.

You keep staring, trying to bring your mind back to calm, every meditation and technique failing you. Your breaths are hot and short.

Her own voice isn't any better than your own, cracking as she answers the questions you blurt out without thinking-

That you've been gone 3 weeks.
That that was enough to wholly miss your children's births.

That your daughter is pulling away from you as you stare, retreating up the tree, out of sight, the wolf in her arms again.

It's very quiet, and you feel very alone at the bottom of the tree.
>>
>>47916694
>>47916700
OH FUCK-
>>
>>47916707
Nialla comes down soon enough, drawing you forwards, a brief kiss and a ferocious hug as she leans her head against your shoulder.
What are you supposed to do? Say?

She whispers to you, and you answer back, gently holding each others hands. And she tells you how fast arachne grow. How many children you have.
Their names.

And she calls your daughter, down from the side of the tree, from where she hid in the shadows and watched.
And you confess, struggling with words, struggling with emotions you don't have words for.

"I- Could you tell me about yourself? I know I've missed a lot, but-"

"I have to start somewhere."
She watches you as you plead, feelings twisting across her face, half hiding behind her mother.
And she steps forwards and starts to introduce herself.

"I- I'm a giant spider."
"And a fighter. And half a mage-"

"And from him, she learns magic- From one side, the blade, from the other, the mystic arts!"
"Ooh."

Ezzy claps a little.
"Thank you, thank you! And now! The most important part of all! When the hands of destiny pushed her forwards, when her legend began, as she crossed paths with a humble moth and the seeds of an empire were planted-"

"Humble does not mean loud, yes, little braggart."
"There are none more humble than I, my queen!"
"You know what you are doing, yes. That statement alone contradicts everything you say-"

"She stepped into the village of the moths, and first piece of the royal tapestry started to weave itself, history slowly turning as a new Queen arose-"
"You are not even listening, are you."

and at this rate, it'll be recap thread 5 before Lyra finishes whacking these phantoms
>>
>>47916941
I'm trying to imagine the difficulty curve here. I mean, yeah, Lyra's pounding them into paste but to a normal adventuring team.. Even a higher level one might have problems with literal hordes of berserk humans attacking.
>>
>>47916981
I think you are supposed to move through them, and Lyra is just distracted by moths right now.
>>
>>47916981
>>47916998

Yeah, this is probably a "evade the unbeatable environmental hazard" level, where the portal to the next level's in the center of the village and adventurers are supposed to try to reach it through the barbarous hordes.
>>
It wasn't an important day, by any means.

It still isn't. Not really. There wasn't any decisions, or any grand adventures, or any... anything.

You were bored, waiting around the village, looking for something to do within its confines. On pain of being sealed in the house and left to go mad.
And you're sure your parents would have done it, too. After the ruins, their patience for your hyperactivity waned a little.

So you were glad for the distraction.

And a huge red spider- Followed by a wolf, no less- made for a very good distraction.
So you got involved, calling out to her from your perch.

And she knew your name, and your sister's too.
She was the one who'd saved her.

So you'd hopped down, introduced yourself properly. Bragged. Because you're the older twin, of course. You've every right. Still do.
And you'd thanked her for saving your sister.

And she'd smiled down at you, and her hand found it's way to your hair, combing carefully through your hair, brushing past your attennae, warm feelings bubbling through you as she reassured you.

And then she'd realized what she'd been doing. And stopped. And blushed.
She'd coughed, glancing around, embarassed.

And all of a sudden, you wanted to see more of that.
More smiles, more blushing. Just more.

It wasn't hard.

You laughed with her as you talked to the wolf at her side. That she'd beaten, who had taken her for a pack-mate.
Wouldn't it be nice if there was a Queen again? If the forest was safe?

You wouldn't have to be scared of leaving the village. Your parents wouldn't flinch when you talked about heading into the woods. She's already got the wolf. And- She's already grown, hasn't she?

So you say it.

And you get both the things you want.

The wolf is even from the old Queen's pack.

So the spider- Lyra- is blushing, and you're smiling, and it isn't boring.
You gather your siblings, and escort her around the village.
>>
>>47917198
Your siblings chatter and laugh and play- And you announce each and every building to her, gesturing grandly, making senseless speeches as she groans and hides her face.

You lose the race when your parents arrive- She moves absurdly fast for something that large, legs churning as she tears across the village to introduce herself before you do.

You have the last laugh though.
And you're ever so sure that it won't be nearly so boring in the future.

It is late.
Not, y'know, actually late.

But, you did make a meeting. And she's never missed one yet, not even when she was stalking some adventurer or another through the town to test out her latest idea.

You vaguely wonder if they know what they're wearing. You're sure they know that it's arachne silk, as they no doubt watched her sew it. Possibly directly around them.

It's more that you're wondering if they realize just how much money they're wearing.

You pause at Elle's door before you let yourself in.
She doesn't lock it- The combined virtues of keeping all her money with you, and the fact that anyone who tried to rob an arachne in the forest would-

Well, they wouldn't. What would they even do? Flee down the road with a few rolls of silk?
The wolves would have them before they left the treeline.

And besides, the lazybones spends most of her time upstairs, anyways.

So you climb the massive staircase, designed around being capable of supporting the monstrously large form of her older sister, and emerge into the room she's made into a bedroom. When she isn't in the nest above.

And she's snoozing away beneath a veritable mountain of blankets.

You'll admit that you got one made for yourself. How could you possibly go back to sleeping on regular cloth after that?

You pull back the first blanket and-

okay, so there's only one blanket.

Oh.

OH.
>>
>>47917820

That is much, much larger.

________________________________________________________________

You grumble at the sudden exposure to cool air, cracking your neck side to side before you stretch, a chorus of clicking as you wake, turning to the human staring, your blanket in hand.

"Good morning, yes."
"Uh. G'morning, Elle."

You nod.

"Mhm. You are early, yes."
"What?"
"You are early?"
"Uh. No? It's past time to meet. Um."

You tilt your head. You missed the meeting? You don't oversleep. Not usually, anyways. You are certainly hungry.
Now that you think about it, you're so very, very hungry.

"Elle?"

"Theresa. I am sorry, yes? Could we have the meeting a little later?"
"Later?"
"I am very hungry."
"Yeah. Yes. That sounds reasonable."

She still hasn't put the blanket down.
"Are you well?"

"I'm fine. Completely fine."
"Okay."
"You are very large. Larger. More Large. That is a lot colours."
"Hmm?"

You turn to face your rear- And it is larger, an almost diamond shape, sharply defined patterns etched across it in bright colours, white and black, hints of orange and yellow higlights.

It's rather striking.

Your arms have a single orange band just before chitin turns to flesh.

More importantly-

You stand, ignoring your hunger to produce a strand of silk.

It can't compare.

If your prior silk was mystical, this is simply miraculous. Divine.
You run your fingers across it as you start to laugh.

________________________________________________________________

You enter the guild like you own it, more than a little high on the rush you've achieved from your new silk.
"I need lunch, please." You inform the barman.

He grins.
"D'you want one plate or two today?"

"I need a Lyra sized lunch, please."

The smile on his face shrinks ever so slightly as he realizes you're standing taller than yesterday, traversing over your body to your newly patterned rear.
>>
>>47917840

Bright, happy voices echo down the stairwell as a pair of people make their way down, and man and a woman, chatting amicably, their features clearly denoting a familial relationship.
"-There's a lot of requests available, right."
"Yeah. Caravans and-"
"I wanna stay in place for at least a bit, Michael."
"Well, the mine always needs guards. Or we can just hunt. And there's all those 'spider requests'."

The girl shrugs.
"They were laughing when they were talking about those, though."
"Yeah, but it's still pay. And they said there's little to no work, right? And an additionalo reward."
"I guess. Start with that?"
"Yeah, sure. Hey, could you let the guild know we're... taking..."

"Wonderful, yes."
"Um." "I've, uh. I've never seen an arachne."
"You've volunteered at the perfect time. I was looking for new people to test, yes."
"You mean the spider requests are-" "Oh-"
"Do not worry, yes? These will be my best dresses yet."

The barman coughs, and you nod.
"I will take my food to go, I think."

This quest has been a lot of fun, and it got me especially interested in finding out things about spiders, if for no other reason than to come up with cool stuff to sort of rules lawyer our way into being able to do.

Turns out [pic related] that the processes behind making spider silk are amazingly complicated, and still not even close to being fully understood by science.

How spiders cling to ceilings? Turns out that even as I have been following this quest the answer to that has been changing. A yearish ago they chalked it all up to Van der Waals forces. Now they aren't so sure, something to do with dynamically opposed friction in opposite leg pairs.

Long story short: it all has inspired me, and I've been meaning to do a bit of pseudo-science writing to try and describe some of the anatomy and inner workings of an Arachne. Does that sound like something anyone would be interested in reading?

Things like once and for all settling the utility question of legipalps, and making some rudimentary sense of how a hydraulic muscolskeletal/exoskeletal hybrid system would work.

I just want to help, naturally I cede the final creative call on everything over to our beloved QM.
>>
>>47920125
I don't think we have legipalps and I am very opinionated as to how hydraulical skeleton systems should work.
But hey, feel free to make a ye adventurer's guide to spiders. Then who cares how accurate it is? Also, it would stay just as interesting.
>>
>>47920125
>How spiders cling to ceilings? Turns out that even as I have been following this quest the answer to that has been changing. A yearish ago they chalked it all up to Van der Waals forces. Now they aren't so sure, something to do with dynamically opposed friction in opposite leg pairs.
Any system that works in real spiders will turn to dust at one glare of Square Cube Law.

But really if you want to write some stuff, just go ahead, have your fun
>>
>>47920212
yeah, honestly, we're able to support our massive spider size with our bone implants, but I can't think of an actual method to get us to stick to surfaces non-damagingly.

I am just sort of assuming that we are actually stabbing our legs into things, even though that is technically not actually happening.
>>
>>47917852
>>47917893
Thanks for running!
>>
>>47920212
With regard to legipalps: nothing explicit has been stated afaik, just the QM generally poopooing the concept due to their lack of utility apart from the looks. I was talking about what role they could have if they did exist on an arachne. Not that they actually do or should. That falls under my deference to REQM. I just wanted a chance to plea their case for existing. E.G. legipalps would have all the advantages of a spider's forelegs combined with all the utility of a ball and socket joint in order to facilitate easier transfer and manipulation of the arachne's silk.

As for the rest, that's only true if you make no attempt to compensate for the square cube law.

An arachne is plainly not pure spider or pure human. Could have some fun with that. Part of what I had in mind would be coming up with ingenious adaptations that draw inspiration from what you would get when synthesizing arachnid with more mammalian anatomy.

Bio-engineering a much bigger spider would require you to overcome an awful lot of challenges, mixing in things like breathing lungs and a more complex circulatory system would be just a start. It's mostly just a mental exercise, I guess.
>>

we sort of normally do that as we go, bro.
If you want to do some on your private time, sure.
Heck, we get heated about it sometimes.
>>
>>47920728
>we sort of normally do that as we go, bro.

I always used to DM like that. I just found myself more often than not wishing that I or someone had put together something beforehand to use as a reference.

So, if nobody objects, I thought I might be so arrogant as to be 'that guy' or at least that guy who expresses an almost creepy obsession with attention to scientific detail wherever possible just to stop "a wizard did it" from being the answer to everything.

I normally would have just kept it to myself, but the player base for this quest has been pretty awesome. It's just my selfish attempt to contribute and be involved in some way with the awesome.
