Welcome to Academy City. The time is now morning, the weather is clear, and the date is now January 31.

You are Kyril Torikov, Level 3 ‘telekinetic’ superhero and you were in bed. Nayuta had yet to call you so you took the opportunity to sleep in a bit. You were booked later this afternoon but not so much this morning. Your old friend Nakazawa was celebrating his birthday. Seeing as one of his dearest wishes was to have the old gang back together, you were definitely going to attend. You had even picked out a birthday present, right under his nose no less. Just as you were about to drift back to sleep your phone rang.

Grumbling at the lost opportunity, you checked your messages. There were two and neither was from your boss. Etzali, your little snitch, had left a rather threatening but succinct message. “Watch your back today,” it read. Seeing as he was deep undercover you couldn’t just walk up to him and ask what the hell was going on. That said, it might be a good idea to investigate, head off any trouble, before it ruined your day. The other one was from Touma. He was apparently arriving on a jet plane from London Heathrow and he was desperate for a ride home. A quick look at the declared flight plans later and, yep, he was due to arrive this morning in an hour or two. You hadn’t seen him for a while either, not since your Siberian adventure, and well this was a good time as any to catch up. That and you had a sneaking suspicion that he had a hand in certain events in Europe.

Clambering out of bed and putting on the mask, you picked up your car keys and decided to,

>Look into Etzali’s dire warning
>Pick up Touma at the airport

As far as Etzali’s warning went, it was just that, a warning. You forwarded the message to Nayuta before driving off to the airport. It was a longer drive than it had to be. In the wake of the Endymion fiasco, the land had been cleared then fenced in. Like the monument to the Miracle of 88, there was even an obelisk with a plaque on it. It quoted Ozymandias. It also forced you to drive the whole way around both areas just to get to the right airport. International air travel hub, Academy City was not.

There was a crowd by the Arrivals terminal when you pulled up though. With the various news vans, you presumed that Touma’s arrival had the fortune, or lack thereof, of coinciding with that of a celebrity’s. There was no reason you would have noted the high end cars parked across the street, including a Jaguar in British Racing Green with a familiar license plate.

It was just as well that you decided to enter from the Departures level, allowing a good view of the crowd below. Yep, there were definitely journalists and news crews waiting for whoever was passing through immigration. Connecting to the airport’s surveillance was a breeze given your credentials. Touma had already gone through the checkpoints. He was waiting for someone. Or maybe he was just afraid of the crowd outside. CASIE couldn’t get a full read through the CCTV. You scanned the recent passenger manifests and one name did catch your eye. Touma, it seemed had come back with another girl, and no doubt she was Code M. Typical really, you sighed. Only this time, his latest ‘conquest’ was the second princess of the British royal family.

Oh he sent you another message.

“Where are you? I need a ride, quick.”

You replied that you were on site. If he was so desperate to leave then you would just,

Well if he was really that desperate then you shouldn’t tarry. You hopped over the railing easily descending a whole storey down to Arrivals. Not many noticed your landing. It didn’t last as you brusquely shoved the reporters aside and strode towards immigration. Touma should not have looked as happy as he did to say you.

“Thank goodness,” he greeted, “Quickly, we need to get out of here before she finds me?”

You wanted to raise your eyebrow but he wouldn’t be able to see it. Instead you simply inclined your head and marched him out the way you came in. The journos were ready this time shouting out questions at you.

“VERDICT, a statement on the situation if you please?”

“Can I get an autograph?”

“Would you care to comment on the accusations of paedophilia?”

“What can you tell us about your relationship with Tokiwadai Middle School?”

Others turned their attention instead to Touma who shrank under the aggressive questioning from the reporters. He had the sense to at least keep his mouth shut. By the time you were outside, the journos had turned their attention back to the arriving British royal. The two of you sped off back in to the City.

“Thanks,” he breathed out heavily.

“Been busy?”

The lower half of your helmet had folded back, revealing your smile. Touma sighed. CASIE noted that he was significantly less tense than previously.

“Well you can tell me when you’re ready,” you changed topic, “you heading home first or?”

“Yeah, home, home sounds good.”

It must have been the jetlag as he promptly fell asleep. He still woke up, if only barely, as you helped him up to his dorm room. The Index had been pleased that he was home but also displeased that she had been left to her own devices. She had demonstrated her displeasure by clamping down on his scalp with her teeth. A familiar shout echoed through the halls and you,

With a promise to hear his story later, you left Touma to rest. Hopefully you would be able to hear about his adventure in Europe. It wasn’t anywhere near lunch and there was no point in showing up early to a party. That meant you had some time to look in to what Etzali had been going on about. Nayuta had even gotten back to you on it. Apparently there had been significant amounts of manpower and munitions being shuffled around the City. Given Etzali was the source of the tip off, it had to be the Guild. They were planning something big if they were stepping out of School District 10 to do it.

“We’re seeing maybe half a dozen cells if the patterns are correct,” Nayuta said.

You were driving up to one now. You didn’t slow down though. It was a recon pass, turning to get a good look as your car blurred past their hideout.

“Yeah, that was definitely looks like they’re setting up for something, keep moving to the next location.”

Trusting Nayuta you continued on. You had stopped after the fifth confirmed sighting of shifty looking teens. It was a school day, yet they had gathered at specific privately rented spaces. That they were seen lugging crates all but confirmed that something was up.

“It seems they’ve set up a perimeter,” she finally concluded.

“In School District 7? Doesn’t make sense,” you noted.

A map of the district was ringed with locations.

“They’ve surrounded the shopping area,” you continued, “Is there anything going on there today?”

“Not that I can see nii-chan,” Nayuta denied, “Her Royal Highness is lodging in School District 3. And there’s nothing official scheduled here.”

“Options?”

“They aren’t doing anything illegal yet so I won’t suggest attacking just yet. They’re obviously waiting for a signal.”

“Or their target,” you realised, “You think they’re after my civilian identity?”

“Who knows? It’s your call nii-chan.”

“Well let’s find out if they’re really after me, or VERDICT,” you replied.

“Alright nii-chan, I’ll keep an eye out for trouble.”

You found a parking garage at a nearby mall before getting out and slipping in to your civilian persona. Just in case, you also sent the boys a message that you may be held up by work. You were sure that they’d understand. In addition to the sunglasses, you actually wore the cap that made up your ‘light’ helmet. You even dropped by a few outdoor shops to grab a few odds and ends. To the goons lying in wait, it looked like you had been shopping. You kept your gaze innocuous as you walked past. They struck.

The pedestrians gawked in incomprehension as they burst out in to the street, pieces flashing. Thankfully you had decided to grab a few extra stab-proof jackets. Otherwise you would have been rather naked without CADME to automatically shield you from gun fire. Their bullets were slowed significantly as your manipulated your improvised shield with your Ability. That’s when the civilians panicked, ducking and running as you drew your own gun and returned fire. More were coming out of the building, this time armed with knives, bats, and improvised melee weapon. You ducked in to a nearby alley, reloading as you went.

“Nii-chan, I hear gunfire, did you start a shoot out in a street?”

“No,” you answered.

A thug rounded the corner and you drilled him in the head with your first round. It was a lucky shot as your next went wide before you locked your arm in position. The recoil travelled down the length, making your shoulder ache with each discharge.

“Ah, looks like you have their attention nii-chan,” Nayuta continued, “they’re all gunning for you now, I think, no, half of them broke off and are heading elsewhere?”

[1/2]
>>

“What about my reinforcements?”

You had smashed the butt of your pistol against another thug’s face before realising the next one had picked up a fallen pistol and was aiming your way. Raising your bulletproof arm, you shielded your face and fired blindly until your gun was spent. Two small stings on your abdomen had indicated that you were hit but your body armour underneath had held.

“Five minutes out at most, Judgement are on their way,” Nayuta informed.

It looked like they had answered your question. This alley was starting to get crowded though.

It was amazing how fast you went through your four magazines. Even more amazing was how they still kept coming at you, heedless of what you did to them. You fell back on your Ability. The press of bodies did not stop, several climbing on top of one another just to get at you. You caught them mid leap, weapons nicking your face as you tossed them up and backwards. That little diversion had allowed their ground bound compatriots to close. You had to alternate between fisticuffs and telekinesis. Both smashed away opposition and you even heard the crunch of bone from the force of your blows.

Your hearing picked up screeches of tires and honking horns and spotted another group coming down a connecting alley. Wisely, you chose to retreat further back in. No doubt they had more guns in stock. There was an array of garbage lying about the further you moved back. Your improvised projectiles were met with fire, literally. You retaliated with a flying dumpster. That seemed to do the trick as the gout of flame died, revealing yet another flying opponent. The blade in his hands bit deep in to your shoulder, jamming the socket, before you could react in time. His body was pulped by the impact with the ground. Again, you registered the presence of another behind you. Turning quickly, you made to strike only to find yourself floating. You were at roof top height and gravity reasserted itself as you recognised the work of a teleporter.

A friendly one though. It seemed your reinforcements had arrived. Kuroko reappeared next to you and a blink later you were lying on a nearby roof.

“Honestly, you’re much heavier than I’m used to,” she groused, “Now stay still!”

In her hands was some kind of packet which she ripped open. Its powdery contents were applied to your wounds. Down below, you could hear the fight continue.

“Heh, maybe I’m just too much man for you to handle,” you couldn’t help but remark.

It was all you could do to keep your mind off the pain. You already had a good look at length of steel lodged in your shoulder. Shirai scowled then injected you with something.

“He’s delirious, are the EMTs here yet?” Kuroko asked, exasperated.

“N-n-nayuta, sssstattussss,” you likewise slurred.

“That’s a localised painkiller, you’re supposed to inject it around the wound,” Nayuta’s voice carried through, “At least you have the disinfectant and coagulant applied. Judgement is wrapping up here. Lots of wounded, some dead but at least no civilians were harmed. We found where the other ones gangers were going though.”

Despite your numbing tongue you didn’t like the sound of that.

“Givit t’meee.”

“If you say nii-chan,” Nayuta shuffled on her end, “Your friend, Kyousuke-san was hit by a drive-by. He was shielding another, Nakazawa I think.”

“Ffffffffffffff,” you only managed to hiss.

“Yeah, I thought as much,” Nayuta agreed, “A deliberate attack on both of you, half of the major players of your little mission in School District 10. He’ll be fine, Heaven Canceller-sensei is on the case. Oh, and Shirai-san, the medics have been waiting for minutes now.”

“Finally.”

You felt weightless once more before landing in a soft layer of clouds. Despite what everyone else said, you did not pass out.

The time is afternoon, the weather is clean, and the date remains unchanged.

“I should have known the two of you were working undercover,” Nakazawa said, “With my background, it would have looked suspicious for the two of you to be my friend.”

You were sitting with your left arm in a sling. It was to prevent you from putting weight on your shoulder. On the bed, Kyousuke was laid up, still sedated after he was brought out of surgery. Nakazawa sat across from you looking miserable. Hopped up on painkillers as you were, you still had the presence to,

“Sorry,” you said, “You’re still my friend no matter what my job is.”

“It’s not worth your,”

“No,” you interrupted, “It is worth it.”

“And it’s not your fault,” another voice chimed in from the window.

The two of you turned to see Sagara and Tadakuni clamber in. You weren’t sure if Nakazawa was more impressed or shocked. It was the fifth floor window after all.

“Happy birthday,” Tadakuni chirped.

The two new arrivals produced some wrapped up gifts. There were name tags from everyone.

“Thanks? I guess?”

The birthday boy received them numbly.

“Those Guild bastards sure know how to crash a party,” Sagara remarked, “But we’re all here.”

“Sagara,” Nakazawa trailed.

He had a good look at Sagara’s eye patch.

“Long story short, Lupin IV in Istanbul,” Sagara waved him off, “Bring out the cake.”

“Right-o, boss,” Tadakuni saluted.

“This is so fucked up,” Nakazawa remarked, “What the hell have you guys been up to?”

You shared a look with Sagara and Tadakuni.

“Well his shit’s classified,” the latter pointed at you then he pointed Kyousuke, “He’s the only one with a ‘clean’ record, so to speak. Me and Sagara have been fighting to get in to Lupin’s pants.”

Sagara palmed his face.

“I won by the way,” Tadakuni finished.

“You guys are crazy,” Nakazawa exclaimed, “And they let you get away with this?”

“Most of the time? Yeah pretty much,” Sagara answered, “You have to remember, the City gets up to some shady stuff and they can’t be seen doing it. So they have people like us do their dirty work.”

It wasn’t necessarily a lie but Nakazawa didn’t look like he fully believed what he was being told.

“S’all fun and games until one of us gets hurt,” Tadakuni nodded towards Kyousuke, “then, then we get even.”

You weren’t the only one who was surprised that Tadakuni would suggest revenge like that. He had always been the most laidback of the five of you. It was something you could get behind though. You felt obligated to add,

“That’s it?” Nakazawa exploded, “That’s all you have to say? That going off and doing things your way is somehow going to make this right? Kyousuke doesn’t have ribs anymore. They picked out 73 grams of out what’s left of his lungs and you three are going to go out there and get ‘even?’ Oh I know exactly what I’m going to wish for.”

“Best you don’t tell us then,” Sagara replied evenly, “It won’t come true.”

“Oh, I know exactly what I’m going to wish for.”

He took a deep breath. The candles flickered out, one by one.

“And it isn’t something stupid like justice,” Nakazawa finished.

An implicit blessing then, you recognised.

“Man, the things we do for love,” Tadakuni mock sighed.

“Says a lot when your girlfriend’s in jail,” you pointed out.

“Bros before hoes?”

He switched tracks faster than a pathological liar.

“You guys,” Nakazawa shook his head.

You liked to think his birthday wasn’t completely ruined.

The time is now even, the weather is dry, and the date remains unchanged.

The three of you were sitting in one of Sagara’s offices. You hadn’t been ignoring Nayuta’s messages but they she was asking where you were and if you were alright. Safe to say, she had yet to give you any marching orders so you so you were fine to plot and plan.

“This wasn’t a typical move by the Guild,” Sagara started off the meeting, “too many warm bodies for one. Logistically, their set up was too smooth. City would have caught on before it happened.”

“We did,” you answered, “Just not fast enough.”

“Did you know why they started shit?” Tadakuni asked.

“Maybe they thought I was a snitch?” you guessed.

“No, it looked more like a decapitation strike, or at least an indirect attack against me, or Asuka. Still doesn’t make sense with the amount of effort they put in.”

“That really doesn’t matter though,” Tadakuni said, “What matters is what we’re going to do.”

“I got a few ideas,” Sagara said, “We need to send a clear message either by bumping off their leaders or destroying one of their symbols. The former might not have much of an impact since guys like them are easily replaced. The latter will escalate into open warfare again and I’m not sure we have the manpower to pull it off.”

“Of course, we could just do what we always do,” Tadakuni spoke, “Steal the pants off of them. Between me and Sagara, we should be able to find all their safehouses and hit ‘em faster than Riko can break out of custody.”

The two of them turned to you for the final decision.

“Pffft,” you snorted, “Who said it has to be one or the other. You guys ever read the threads about VERDICT online? I’m the patron saint of collateral damage.”

The two others whipped out their phones in response. Figures that they wanted to make sure you weren’t full of shit.

“So we’re going to do a two-pronged attack,” you continued, “They tried to take me out, seems fair I do the same to them. Meanwhile you two need to go to their bank and make a withdrawal.”

“I’m going to need her help anyway,” you said.

“S’all good.”

Now it was Tadakuni’s turn to try and reassure you. A few more details needed to be ironed out of course. You obviously were doing this as Kyril Torikov, and not as VERDICT. One, because you needed the street cred, and two, because you wanted make sure your secret identities remained that, secret.

The time is now morning, the weather is now pleasant, and the date is February 1.

The first thing you did this morning was call Asuka. You had it good authority that the Guild leadership was gathering today to talk about how they were going to deal with you. Etzali had initially passed on the intel but Sagara had confirmed it. Strike while the iron is hot and all that. It took a while to pick up. Strange that, but you supposed that since her mobile phone was in the British Consulate-

“Well hello? May I ask who’s calling?”

The familiar voice of the Lady London, Asuka’s mother, came through the other side.

“Er,” you were thrown for a loop.

“Ah, that voice, you’re Ilyena’s boy aren’t you? Yes, yes,” she continued, “Well I’m sad to say but Asuka’s a bit busy right now entertaining Her Royal Highness. Her fiancée is indisposed you see and we’re in a right pickle until he come back.”

“Does he have a name?” you managed.

You already had an inkling of who she was referring to.

“A certain Kamijou Touma-san.”

Bingo.

“Do you know him? Oh, what pleasant surprise, a double date sounds lovely.”

You felt a migraine begin to form.

“I’ll see what I can do,” was you reply.
