Become The Dragon Quest 20

You are Countess Kotijah Imidarius, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Last time you saved Sena from some sort of diabolical machine that was siphoning the divine magic from her body and turning her completely into an undead creature. You headed downstairs to find Gil had solved the zombie problem, before descending to find Kat and the necromancer in a chamber with a giant pool of blight. The necromancer was trying to force Kat to replicate the potion she had given Sena, and Kat was stalling for time.

You jumped down to save the day, having Sena grab Kat while Gil gave you ranged support. Your friends managed to escape while you kept the necromancer busy, burning away her false flesh to reveal that she herself was made of pure blight. You used a nearby table for a daring maneuver involving your father's rocket sword trick and the classic table flip, and beat her down into a puddle of black goo that, as you beat a hasty retreat, merged with the pool of blight around the edge of the room. That's a problem for future you though.

You reached the ground floor to find your team hiding from Tickles, the giant monster made of blight and dismembered limbs, and decided to fly out through a hole in the roof instead. You and Gil punched said hole in the roof, and you climbed up to the highest point, gliding away over Tickles who tried to launch blight blasts at you. You made it back to the carriage and sped away as fast as you could, hanging on to the reins for dear life as the horses tried to bolt away from the creature.
>>
You went to sleep and had a talk with Allegiset about magic, undeath and blight, and got your Strength enhanced by him as a boon for your continued excellence in combat. You woke up to find your group piecing things back together, and it's time you did the same. You've got a long list of things to take care of, and you plan to start crossing them off one by one.

Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll is 20-modifier or higher. Modifier is Stat being rolled+Relevant skill. You can decide which skill to apply. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.

You clear your throat to get everyone's attention before pausing. It takes you a moment to find the right place to start.

“...I'm glad everyone is alright. I mean... Kat, we need to get your arm taken care of, but... We're all alive. The town is free for the time being.”

Gil nods slightly and smiles.

“Yeah... A big tough necromancer and we foiled her plans.”

Sena smiles softly.

“So we're heroes now, right?”

Kat takes a pull from her pipe and smirks.

“So we should head back to town and have them throw a party in our honor. With cake.”

Sena's eyes light up, but you shake your head.

“Yes, we're heroes, but we have to keep moving. We need the sword so we can fix the real problem and so I can turn into a dragon. If we turn around now, that necromancer is going to come after us and innocent people might get hurt. If we can get to the next town, we can try to find a healer for Kat. We might need to do this all over again if the next town is the same way... I get the feeling we'll be better prepared this time though.”

You look at their faces. They're tired, worn thin by what just happened, but they look determined. You smile softly and nod a bit, mostly to yourself.

“Before we get moving... Anything you guys need to tell me about what happened?”

Kat shrugged a little bit.

“I mean, I learned a few things about blight. I boiled some of it while I was working on the potion and sort of forgot all about it, and it just turned into a solid black lump. I think that might be part of how you make a Null Stone.”

Gil nodded slightly.

“And that creature outside, that giant thing with all the limbs... She stitched her body together with blight, but that thing was held together with steel. Seems like a tacky job for a guard dog, unless someone else did it for her.”

Sena hesitates, shifting slightly and looking down.

“She... When she was in control of me, she kept forcing magic through me... Said it was like strengthening a muscle... She wanted me to become her assistant or something... So I guess there's that. I think I can do that to myself if I try, but... it'll probably hurt a lot, even if it does help me get better at magic faster.”

You nod slightly and rise to your feet, helping Sena up.

“Let's get moving then. We can figure the rest out as we go. There's bound to be other stuff at work here, and we don't want to get caught up in it.”

You pack up camp and help everyone clean out the carriage. You don't know how far the next town will be from here, but the sooner you get on the road, the faster you'll get there.

As everyone piles into the carriage you take your usual seat at the reins and get the horses going, relaxing a bit. Once you're back on the road you open the flap to talk to your friends.

“So... Gil, how are you with a sword?”

Gil laughs a bit.

“Never used one in my life... And I don't plan to. No offence, but I'll stick to my knives. They suit me a lot better.”

Kat laughs a little.

“He tried it once and ended up falling over with every swing. He was eight, I think. Ah, the memories~”

Gil turns red and stares out the window, grumbling.

“Is that right? I'll have to remember that. Anyway... Kat, how's your arm? And do we need to make a supply stop?”

Kat looks at her arm for a moment.

“I mean it's still broken if that's what you mean. And I'm fine on supplies for the next day or two before I smoke my way through them. Then we have a problem.”

You nod slightly.

“Now for the big one... Sena, when I opened that bottle, do you remember what happened?”

Sena shifts in her seat and turns away.

“...You got really mean all of a sudden. You started to shout a lot, and you attacked the necromancer... She tossed you around a bit and then she took control of me... I don't remember the rest, but I think you were screaming for her not to take me away, which is... kind of nice...”

She smiles softly, and you smile back.

“Alright, so at least I didn't completely lose my mind... That's good news, right?”

Gil shrugs a bit.

“I dunno, losing your mind can be useful. I mean, do you know how hard it is to use enchantments on a crazy person? It's why insane asylums exist in the first place, you can't just magically calm them all down.”

Now that's useful info. Maybe stocking up on a bottle or two would be worthwhile after all.

You spend two days traveling with little in the way of excitement, but on the third day you feel an odd chill in the air. As you continue down the road you spot what looks like a marsh up ahead, the road weaving through it along the only dry patches of ground. Something about the water strikes you as odd, and you slow the carriage to a halt for a moment. Your sight doesn't reveal anything odd about the water, but you still feel funny about the situation.

You look around for a bit and spy a large rock. You decide to test the waters, figuratively and literally, and heft it. Before last night this rock would have given you some substantial difficulty, but now it barely feels like it weighs anything at all. You hurl it into the marsh as hard as you can and watch. You can see something in the water moving towards the stone, something large, and then there's a sudden thrashing. An instant later half the rock you threw bounces along the path, tumbling towards you. The cut is smooth and clean, almost shiny. The movement in the water stops a moment later, and then everything falls still once more.

Cleave fish. Powerful jaws and beaks instead of teeth. You sigh softly. Your father had told you about them one night to scare you into staying away from the lake when you were five. You didn't think they actually existed, but the mere thought had kept you out of the water for years.

You decide that a fish that literally just ate half a rock is probably not worth your effort right now. You could wear it down from afar, but in the murk of the swamp it would be hard to spot and kill. Now you have to make a choice though. Heading south from here would probably put you back on the main road, the one you were on before your detour, while heading north puts you closer to the coast and further from the capitol. Travel on the main roads might be less dangerous in terms of monsters, but there's also the risk of running into knights.

You decide to ask your friends for advice, opening the carriage door to talk to them. Sena is asleep, and Gil and Kat are both blushing, a blanket draped across their laps. Gil glances at Kat then back at you.

"We weren't doing anything. I swear."

You briefly consider slamming the door and pushing the carriage into the marsh so you don't have to think about that any more. Instead you rub your temples.

"There's a cleave fish in the marsh so we need to change course. We can either go north or south. North might have more monsters, while south of here is the main road but we're more likely to be recognized."

Gil says "North" in the same instant Kat says "South", and the two exchange looks. You close your eyes.

"Well unless we split up, we can't do both. And since neither of you are of any help, and Sena is, I pray, asleep, I'm going to decide on my own."

You close the door while making direct eye contact with them, giving them the most unnerving glare you can. Honestly, you literally just cleaned those seats the other day...

You turn the carriage towards the south and skirt the edges of the marsh as you go. It takes you almost the rest of the day to make it to something resembling a road, but it looks well-travelled and much smoother than cutting across country. You adjust your course a bit and continue on down the road.

A little ways further east you come to a crossroads. One sign informs you that continuing down the road will bring you towards a place called Nyl, twenty miles from here, a distance you could easily cover before travel becomes dangerous. The other lists the destination as the Cathedral of the Holy Eclipse, but lists no distance.

On the one hand the town offers supplies, which you desperately need, but there's no guarantee that there'll be a church or healer there. On the other hand, the cathedral might be of use to you, but there's no telling who might be there or who might have connections in the capitol. Of course, you could always visit one and then the other...

You set the horses on the road to Nyl and give them a little push to ensure you get there before night falls. You allow yourself to relax and enjoy the ride, taking in the scenery. You spot a few kinds of bird you don't recognize, and more strange plants. The capitol had many of the same things you were used to in the south, and it makes the journey seem more exotic than it probably is.

You spot the first banner as the sun is starting to set. 'Welcome to Nyl!', it boldly proclaims. The next one, fairly close behind it, reads 'Home of the Festival of Stars!". Both are written in silvery ink on dark blue fabric that resembles the night sky, although the hand could certainly have been steadier. As you proceed you notice decorations in the trees, black and dark blue bows in the trees with white and yellow beads covering the knots, dozens of 'stars' all along your path.

The town of Nyl itself is bigger than Ditio, but also less grand. It reminds you vaguely of your home town, but bigger and cleaner. It's dusk now, and it's pretty dark, but you can see light in the center of town and hear people talking. Someone is yelling at someone else, and you can hear the sounds of construction, of hammer and nail, almost everywhere around you.

You lead the carriage towards the nearest inn, a place called The Slumbering Dragon, but you're too tired to either appreciate the irony or groan at the inevitable puns your companions will come up with. You climb down from the driver's seat and lead the horses and carriage around to the back, securing both at the stables and helping your friends out.

As you come around to the front you finally give the town a proper look. There are streamers and bows all over the place, more 'stars' adorning every door and window. You head into the inn and are immediately greeted by the tired, bored face of a young man who immediately frowns upon sporting you.

"Oh good, more tourists... Welcome to The Slumbering Dragon. My name is Pirin. How can I help you fine folk?"

You approach the counter.

"Rooms for four please."

Pirin laughs a bit.

"Right... we've got loads of room. Sure. Well, Miss Comedian, we've only got one room left, and at this point it's probably the last one in town so you and your friends will have to put up with it."

You glance at your group for a moment.

"Does that have anything to do with what's going on outside?"

Pirin chuckles a bit before falling silent.

"You... you really don't know?"

He pales.

"Quick, run, before-"

An old man with a rather impressive moustache pokes his head out the door behind the counter, eyes practically twinkling.

"Someone doesn't know about the festival?"

Pirin groans and slumps against the counter. The old man walks over and smiles.

"Would you like to hear the story? I'll let you stay for free if you'll put up with it. I just love telling the tale, and my boy here is, unfortunately, too old to listen to his old man ramble."

You opt to hear him out and smile.

"Alright then. I'll hear the story. But over drinks and dinner. I'll pay, it's the least I can do."

Pirin groans against the counter and slowly lifts his head.

"I'll go and get the room ready..."

The old man nods and smiles broadly, taking Pirin's chair.

"How about we go to a local tavern then? They have roast pork tonight. Good wine, too. Imported from the eastern border, where the grapes are the size of your head. Lovely stuff."

You give him a nod, and he leaps over the counter, heading for the door.

"Come along then!"

Gil looks at him, then at you, and shrugs.

"I'm gonna get Kat to bed so she can rest."

Sena frowns at him and huffs.

"You mean finish what you started, right?"

Gil and Kat both turn bright red and Sena grabs your wrist, tugging you towards the door and after the man.

"Let's go..."

You nod and follow Sena out. The old man leads you across the street to a similar-looking building called The Merry Dragon, and as you step inside and contemplate the rather uncreative name, you see the old man approach another who is either his twin brother or a magic doppelganger. They embrace and laugh, chattering briefly before the newcomer walks over to you and Sena, pushing glasses of wine into your hands.
>>
"Welcome to my tavern! Make yourselves at home! My brother and I will be with you in a moment, we're just going to fetch the puppets."

Puppets. Great. You look at Sena, who seems ecstatic about the prospect of a puppet show. You sip the wine and pause. It really is good wine. You take another sip and sit down with Sena by the fire. The two men reappear with a large wooden trunk and a piece of cloth nailed to a pair of posts. They set up their stage and smile at you, one standing to one side while the other gets out some puppets.

"Long ago, when the world was young, there was no light in the sky. No sun, no moon, and certainly no stars."

Two puppets appear, both with felt tears stuck to their cheeks. Sena pouts at the sight. You're not sure you can quite handle this situation, so you drink some more of your wine and try to just relax.

"The people were sad, because they had no way to tell time, no way to know when to sleep, when to work, and certainly no light to work by. And so, Lord Solis and Lady Noct came up with solutions."

The puppets are replaced by two different ones, a splendid king in white and a magnificent and frightening queen in black.

"Lord Solid created a brilliant orb of white light, fueled by the goodness in his own heart, and lifted it into the sky to help his people see their work and the wonders of the world around them."

The queen vanishes and a sun-shaped puppet rises up, before hooking to the top of the stage above the king. Then the queen reappears.

"Lady Noct created the moon, a pale orb that drew in light and darkened the night sky further, creating time to relax and indulge."

This time the king vanishes, and a moon is hung over the queen. The king reappears, this time with a sword.
>>
"But Lady Noct's pale orb was not fueled by goodness. She was wicked and cruel, and in the darkness she created she performed all manner of evil deeds. Lord Solis would not tolerate his people coming under attack, and so the sun and moon went to war."

The puppets clash, and Sena gasps, hugging your arm tightly. You have a bit more wine and watch the two puppets squabble for a moment.

"They were evenly matched in every way, and both realized that so long as the hearts of men were in balance between goodness and wickedness, the sun and moon would always be in balance as well. Lord Solis set out to teach kindness and respect, while Lady Noct sought to teach irreverence and decadency. But the fragments of the sun and moon left behind by their conflict still hang in the sky, the pale lights we call stars, the light in the dark, the place where good and evil meet."

A spray of glitter erupts upward, covering the cloth of the stage and settles into neat little patterns that look like the constellations. Both men bow low, and Sena breaks into applause, standing up and cheering. You clap as well and smile.

"So that's what the festival is about then? Celebrating that story?"

They nod in unison, and the innkeeper smiles a bit.

"Exactly. It's a day to celebrate the follies and successes of humanity, to remind us we are great, and to remind us that we are so very small."

You finish your wine off and smile.

"So what was the name of his sword? I mean, the sword of a legendary king? That sounds like it would have a name worth knowing."

The tavern owner laughs a bit.

"It was called Shard of the Sun, before Lady Noct shattered it. It's what became the stars in the sky. Legends say that blades of white light descend from the sky and find their way into the hands of the worthy when darkness threatens the world of men."

You nod slightly and recline.

"Huh... Well, that's a shame. Still, a nice story. So what about the inn and tavern? What's with the names?"

The innkeeper gives a hearty laugh.

"Why, because dragons are the symbol of Nyl! This town was where Lady Noct bore the first dragon, a crimson scaled beast named-"

Your head goes fuzzy for a moment, and you feel your whole body tense. The world seems to blur around you and your heart is thundering in your chest. It feels a lot like when Allegiset appeared before you at the ball, only more abrupt and almost sickening. You jolt back into focus an instant later.

"-the Fierce! He became the father of all dragons, and once made his lair on this very spot! Today it's a humble town near the capitol city, but we're proud of our heritage and history."

Besides there is a VERY good reason he didn't tell us. If you read Kot's parents side story the curse is apparently REALLY bad. Like Dragons would rather not improve themselves and be almost enslaved because Gaining power leads to them going batshit insane bad.

You nod slowly as you collect yourself, taking a slow breath and looking into your empty cup.

"Maybe you can tell me about the area then. I mean, a big, important festival, there are bound to be places to see besides the main events. Ruins, that sort of thing."

The innkeeper nods knowingly at you.

"I think I know just the place. I'll have Pirin give you the grand tour tomorrow!"

The tavern owner laughs heartily.

"That sounds like a splendid idea! I'll make packed lunches as well! It's been so long since anyone wanted to see the sights and not just dance, sing and see the seer!"

Sena smiles at you.

"So we're going on an adventure tomorrow?"

You smirk a bit.

You grab some roast pork from a nearby table.

"Well, I'm gonna help myself to some food and drink and call it a night if you don't mind."

The tavern owner nods.

"By all means, enjoy yourself. Revel, if you like."

You grab another cup of wine.

"I'll revel tomorrow night. Tonight I'm just gonna go to bed."

Sena grabs some food and sits beside you, and you both eat in comfortable silence. You thank the men for their warm welcome to the town, and head for the inn, Sena hugging your arm on the way back.

"That was fun... A nice break, right?"

You nod and smile at her.

"Something like that. Honestly I'm still just beat from the trip so far. I'm looking forward to a bed."

When you reach the room you find Gil and Kat asleep on the bed, their clothes scattered around the room. Sena pouts and sighs.

You sigh and clear some space on the floor, deciding to chew them out in the morning. You lean against the wall and Sena sits on your lap, curling up against you and closing her eyes. You let yourself drift into an uncomfortable sleep. Fire greets your vision, and slow Allegiset emerges from it.

You look him dead in the eye.

"Thank you for intervening, although perhaps I wouldn't have needed it if you had just told me about this place. It's not far from the capitol, it's not like it would have been an unlikely place to end up."

He moves around you rapidly, and you feel hot breath on the back of your neck.

"You were the one who diverted your path over a fish. I had no time to warn you, and no inclination to give you the temptation to search on your own. I don't need to tell you what knowing my name would do."

You nod slightly.

"So instead of trusting me not to risk my neck, you just sat back and assumed things would work out?"

You turn around and come face to face with his smirk.

"Indeed. I presumed that if you would need me, I would become aware of it, but you're too curious for your own good sometimes. I didn't want to create questions you would want answers to that would lead you to this place and to my name."

You sigh a bit.

"Alright... so who is Lady Noct?"

Allegiset falls silent for a moment.

"My revered mother, and mother to all monsters. Temptress of the light, mistress of the darkness, she who resides within and rules the moon and the night."

Once youre sure he's done being poetic, you try your next question.

"And what about your lair? This town was built on the place you ruled from, right?"

Allegiset nods sullenly.

You shrug a bit.

"Well that answers one question. If I stumble upon something, am I allowed to take it?"

"Well, I'm going on a little tour tomorrow, so who knows. Maybe I'll figure it out. Do I get any hints at all?"

Allegiset just glares at you for a moment before turning away.

"Good night, daughter."

You awaken to the sound of Gil sneaking around the room gathering his clothes in just his shirt, using one hand to keep the front pulled down. He looks at you, pales a bit, and slowly walks back over to the bed with what he gathered, slipping back under the blankets. You sigh softly and look at Sena, who is either passed out or doing a very good impression.

Gil shifts a little and moves closer, peeking out from under the blanket.

"Sorry... It's just... Yeah, we need to vent our stress... I mean, it's like I said. There's no real way we can go back to how things were... We're along for the ride now, like it or not. It doesn't make it any less scary though, or stressful..."

You nod slightly.

"Next time you're sleeping in the carriage though. And then cleaning up afterwards. I don't want to know about what you two get up to."

Gil nods, cheeks red, and smiles.

"Thanks, boss... For, you know, not ripping my head off over this... I'll try to be more carefu-"

Gil is suddenly yanked under the covers with a muffled yell, and Kat giggles softly. You roll your eyes a bit.

You gently adjust Sena.

“Sorry, Kat, but Gil's with me today. I'm going on a tour of the town, including some old ruins belonging to my ancestor, and I'll need his keen eyes for it. You need to stay here and rest.”

You can hear Kat's muffled swearing from under the blanket and Gil slowly emerges with his pants on.

“I know, but she's right... You need to recover.”

Kat pokes her head out from under the blanket and grumbles.

“Stupid necromancers and their stupid minions and their stupid grip strength...”

You shrug slightly.

“Read over the books I found with Sena. You'll both probably find them useful.”

Sena stirs a bit and yawns, opening her eyes and smiling.

“Morning... What's going on...?”

She looks at Gil, then at Kat.

“Did Gil get kicked out of bed...?”

Kat smirks slightly.

“Nah, Kotijah's stealing him away from me. She's a homewrecker.”

Sena nods slightly and stretches, yawning again and standing up.

“That's no good... Kotijah, don't do that...”

You rise to your feet as well and laugh a little, getting the books from your pack and passing them to Sena.

“You're on research duty today.”

Sena nods and salutes, sitting on the bed and curling up on it with the books. Kat tussles her hair a bit.

“I guess we'll see you guys later then?”

Gil grabs his bow and nods.

“I guess so. We'll be back before too long though.”

You shrug a bit.

“Ancient tomb to a long-dead dragon that might be filled with dangerous traps and horror beyond measure? Yeah, that's an afternoon.”

You head for the door, grabbing your sword and pack and strapping on both as you head downstairs. Pirin is sitting there on a stool waiting for you, carrying a large pack of his own and sulking.

“How did you manage to get me roped into this...? It's the festival, I should be out dancing with a nice girl, not babysitting the wanderers...”

“Suck it up. No girl is going to want to dance with you if this is enough to throw you off your game. You'll have plenty of time for dancing later. If you mope then I'll drag my heels.”

Pirin scowls a bit and heads for the door.

“Stupid lousy... Rrr...”

He steps outside and makes a grand, sweeping gesture, putting on an obviously fake smile.

“Come along, friends! Let's begin our expedition! Where would you like to see first, or shall I rattle off the list of wonderful sights to see? Here's a hint, the list doesn't exist, so I'm already done.”

You roll your eyes a bit.

“Take me to the ruins of the ancient dragon's lair.”

Pirin goes pale as a ghost and stares at you blankly.

“You have got to be kidding me.”

He turns and starts walking off, running a hand through his hair.

“We're not going to get you killed. But you should probably tell us what the big deal is if we're heading somewhere dangerous.”

Pirin glances over his shoulder at you.

“It's haunted, alright? And don't... Don't pretend like I'm joking around. Weird things happen there... Apparitions, phantoms, a giant ghost dragon...”

Gil chuckles softly.

“I used to be afraid of ghosts too, but they aren't real. When someone dies their soul goes back to the Essence.”

Pirin huffs and turns away.

“Fine, don't believe me. But when things start happening, don't expect me to stick around. I don't wanna die in some pit somewhere.”

He leads you towards the edge of town and off into the woods. Several people stop and say hello to you and Gil, but they seem to ignore Pirin, and with each person that passes by he grows more and more morose and dejected. Gil gives you a nudge and gestures to him, but you're not sure where to start with cheering the guy up when his whole town doesn't seem to care he exists and he thinks he's marching to his death.

You decide to quite while you're behind and just let him guide you to the ruins. He brings you deep into the woods before stopping on top of a small hill.

“We're... We're here...”

As you catch up with him you can see a large clearing ahead of you, maybe a hundred feet across. There's a large mound in the center, with a stone archway set into it that leads down into the earth big enough for Allegiset to traverse through. It's dark, even with the sun shining almost directly down the passage, and the air seems still, as though holding its breath. Pirin is shaking.

“So! The tomb! Seen it! Next!”

He spins on his heels and starts to walk away, and you gently grab his shoulder to stop him, looking him in the eye for a moment. He looks petrified, and he glares at you, ready to snap at you at any moment.

You release him and head for the archway, and Gil follows at your side with his bow at the ready. You don't look over your shoulder at Pirin, but you can hear his footsteps walking away, and then back towards you.

“Hey!”

You stop and glance at him, and he glares as he runs over to you, before his expression softens a bit.

“I... I'm tired of... of all of this. I'm tired of being ignored by people, of not standing up for myself. So you're going to show me what makes you so special... got it?”

As you approach the archway you feel your sight activate all on its own, and your head hurts a little bit for a few moments as you gaze at it. The darkness isn't an illusion, or anything else of the sort. It's so dark because this arch isn't just an arch. It's a portal. The deep darkness ahead of you leads to somewhere else, some other point in space, which you quickly identify as a mere inch ahead of it. The portal to the capitol was bright and shining, but this one is dark, foreboding and ominous.

As your eyes adjust a bit and the headache begins to fade, you can almost see the darkness parting before your eyes. The portal is dormant, and walking through will take you down to the tomb as it currently is, but if you can manage to activate it it might take you to some other point in time, or at the very least set the end to where it's supposed to be. Your sight reverts to normal and you feel the sharp pain of a headache once again for a few seconds. Well, you did ask Allegiset for a clue...

Closer examination of the arch itself reveals a number of runes that you don't recognize, at least not consciously. You feel an odd familiarity as you look at them, and you can feel your body twitch slightly as you brush a hand along one of them. Something deep inside you stirs, and you can feel it trying to overwhelm your senses and manipulate you. Something about the symbols themselves is influencing you, but you manage to fight it down. Whatever these symbols are, they seem like they're meant to keep either humans or dragons out, but you're not sure which or how they work. You could always have Gil or Pirin try to touch one to see which it is, or you could just hope for the best.

As you continue your examination your fingers brush against a discolored section of stone that shifts slightly. You poke at it a little and the stone gives way, the button clicking as it's pressed. The ground before the arch rumbles a little, and soil is blasted into the air as a stone pillar suddenly emerges. There's a stone bowl on top of it with three indentations along the interior, and more of the strange symbols around the edge of the bowl. They glow softly, a soft pulsing that seems to match the beating of your heart. You feel the twitch again, and you know how to get the portal to open.

Do what no man or dragon unworthy of Allegiset would ever think to do.

Fill the bowl with the blood of a mortal man.

You sigh a bit and turn to Gil and Pirin.

"I need to fill this with human blood if we're going to get into the tomb. And since I'm not entirely human I need a volunteer."

Gil examines the bowl for a moment.

"Well, that's about as much blood as you can get from one person without killing them, but I don't think the amount is the problem. Whoever gives it up won't be able to go with you into the tomb."

He looks at Pirin, who scowls.

"I... I'm trying to be brave here, I'm not giving up my blood and sitting this one out!"

Gil sighs softly and pinches the bridge of his nose.

"If we share the burden we'll both be out of commission. We'll be too busy to carry on. So what's the call, boss? Shall I do the honors and struggle home while you take Pirin into certain danger, or do we find someone else to lighten the load?"

"Let's double back and grab Sena and Kat. We won't be bringing them with us, probably, but Kat can make healing potions and Sena can provide some healing as well."

Pirin sits down and pauses for a moment before pulling out a small knife.

"Fill, right? That's pretty subjective... I mean, to the brim or what? To the notches inside?"

Gil turns and walks off.

"I'll go get Sena and a potion or two. Be back in a bit. See if you can work it out."

Pirin approaches the bowl and pokes it with his knife.

You advance on him slowly, kneeling down when he tenses and starts to move back.

“I won't end up like that. I'm committed to this, but I'm not going to be a puppet. I've done that before, and I'm never yielding to anyone ever again. The whole bloodline is cursed, and I need his help to break it before I proceed. We have a deal, that's all there is. There's plenty of time for me to make sure I get the better end of it.”

Pirin's eyes widen slightly.

“Cursed...? No, that... His 'curse' was giving red dragons a soul like human beings, making them kind instead of cruel, giving them a chance at peace even if it meant losing their power. To him it was the greatest blow to their pride he could deal, but it just ended up making them happier. Without him, without his name to return them to how they used to be, they were free.”

You take a moment to consider his words.

“So the curse he's helping me break is the curse of having a human soul, and then he gets a blank slate to work with... Wait, you said that his name returns dragons to how they once were? So then... His name breaks the curse. He can break it at any time... He just wants the sword that beat him and the rose first...”

You feel Allegiset's gaze upon you and pain wracks your body.

“Oh dear. Can't have that, can we. No no, you're going to forget all about this incident.”

You feel him reach into your mind and rip, yanking the memories from your head one at a time and discarding them. It feels like agony, and you can hear someone screaming in the distance before realizing that it's your own voice. When he finally releases you, you find yourself face down on the ground. In the back of your mind, in a tiny, secret space that managed to avoid his notice, you still remember. Pirin is beside you, shaking you gently.

“Right... Yeah... The bowl... We were talking about when Gil gets back, we were going to fill it and head into the tomb.”

You nod and smirk a bit.

“Heh... Thanks for reminding me. I don't know what came over me...”

You brush yourself off and make your way over to the group with a smile.

“Good to see you too, Fiona, though I have to wonder what you're doing here...”

Fiona nods a bit.

“I was never very driven or focused in my home town... I was the one cleaning up the wine spills during the nightly revels rather than participating, and I'm ashamed to admit that my connection to the moon was weak at best. After meeting you I dove into it, pursuing with dedication every opportunity to indulge by night and practice virtue by day. They sent me to the Cathedral of the Grand Eclipse just the other day, and I'm in Nyl as one of the emissaries of the church helping with the Festival of Stars.

I saw Gil and Sena and knew you couldn't be too far away, so I decided to follow them. I just knew that I had to see you again, and to let you know that the message it being heard loud and clear. Not all will open their ears, but enough will listen for it to make a difference. Already the signs are being noticed. Monsters at the southern border, necromancers within the kingdom itself, and talk of someone seeking the White Blade of Schimdi, the only means of preserving mankind through the dark trials ahead.”

She smiles cheerfully at you.

“I'm just pleased as punch that I'm able to do such a good job! I hope that my work is satisfactory to you.”

Gil and Sena both look at her, then at you, and both give you a disapproving look, shaking their heads.

You shrug a little.

“I mean, I'm gonna be a powerful dragon and apparently there are now two people who think I'm going to bring about the end of the world, so... Gotta have worshippers, right? But let's... Let's change the subject... Fiona, we're about to bleed Gil like a stuck pig into a magic bowl so I can warp through time and visit an ancient tomb when it still had things worth stealing in it. Can you keep him from dying?”

Fiona smiles blankly at you for a moment as she processes that, and then perks up.

“Y-You're trusting me? With the life of one of your companions, while you do important tasks? Oh, thank you!”

She hugs you tightly, burying her face against your shoulder and squeezing tightly. If you hadn't just gotten your muscles and bones enhanced in the last few weeks, you're pretty sure you'd be having trouble breathing. You gently pry her off of you.

“His life needs to be safe, I don't want him dying, but there needs to be some risk while he's bleeding or else the ritual won't work, so don't heal him until the end, and don't heal him fully until we're out again.”

Fiona nods and smiles at Gil.

“I promise you that you're in good hands. Confidence is key when working with divine magic, and my confidence is boundless when I work in the service of my lady.”

Gil swallows nervously.

“Um... Can I... pick someone else to watch over my life? Not that I'm opposed to religious zealots who think you're going to destroy the world and sit on the ashes like a throne making sure I don't die, but... No, wait, yeah, that's exactly what I'm opposed to, on the grounds that I don't trust anyone who believes that with anything, ever.”

You point at Sena.

“You brought Sena, right? And Kat's potions? So you know that you're going to be fine later anyway. Besides, I trust Fiona. Divine magic is all about faith, and her faith in me is unwavering. If she says she can keep you from dying, I believe her.”

You turn to Sena and smile.

“No offense meant by the pointing.”

Sena nods.

“None taken. For now.”

She smirks a bit and pokes Gil's shoulder, and Gil hesitates before pulling out a small vial.

“Kat only had this much. It'll heal me over time but there's no guarantee that it can save a life. And she had to sacrifice the last of her stock to make it for me.”

He pauses for a moment and looks at Fiona.

“You can keep me from dying from blood loss... How are you with broken bones?”

Fiona smiles sweetly.

“Well I've never tried before, but with my newfound faith, anything is possible. And it surely couldn't hurt matters. If it heals incorrectly we could just rebreak it and start again. Painful, true, but in the end there wouldn't be any real harm in trying, and I can ease the pain.”

Gil nods slowly.

“Prove to me that you can do this and... and I've got a job in mind for you.”

Fiona nods and smiles brightly.

“Oh, everything is so wonderful today! Now then, shall we get started?”

She rolls up her sleeves and Gil approaches the bowl, taking out a knife.

“I have never been more afraid of anything in my entire life and I want you to know that.”
