Become The Dragon Quest 14

You are Countess Kotijah Imidarius, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Last time you recovered from your ordeal at the lab and had dinner alone before making your way to the courtyard for your sword lesson. You fought your way through Gimbly's illusions and Pucelik's berserker fury and got your sword and armor broken to pieces, and you nearly lost your arm in the process, but you managed to beat Gimbly and go head to head with Pucelik for a little while.

After getting healed up, sort of, you went off to speak with your friends. Turns out they all had a good day in the city, pursuing their own various tasks and advancing their goals. You ended up passing out in your chair and spoke with Allegiset about the blade and rose and their meaning, as well as a few other things, and woke up in your own bed, having had your clothes changed while you were asleep.

Then things got weird.

You went down to breakfast but no one was there, and when you went to wake everyone else you were stopped by a maid, one who didn't quite seem to fit in. You tried to push past her and she threw you back into your chair, so you summoned Cenere to your side. He looked like someone just kicked his shit in a few times, and he made a hole in the wall for you to escape through. You used your firesinging to power him up and then ran for it.

From the lobby you could see with your second sight that something big was happening in the basement, and ran upstairs to find your friends. You encountered another maid and absorbed her fire spell before shattering her body into shards of ice, pocketing the one that seemed to be her core. After a false start you found Sena being kicked by two more “maids”, and promptly attempted to beat one with the other.
>>
In the resulting battle you were forced to firesing at point blank range, and you lost control of your power in the heat of the moment. You passed out from the resulting explosion, and woke up somewhere strange and new. Tirio and Millie were there, and you ran from them only to find yourself in a strange hallway that gave you a bizarre vision of some sort. Tirio snapped you out of it, and is now trying to persuade you to go to the ball, offering you protection from whatever ploys might be in place against you.

The rules:
Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll is 20-modifier or higher. Modifier is Stat being rolled+Relevant skill. You can decide which skill to apply. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.

“...Fine. I'll go. I want to prepare my own defensive measures though. I trust you to watch my back but I want to be able to count on my own power.”

As you say that you feel a gentle warmth from the necklace you're clutching, a soft and reassuring heat. Tirio nods and waves his hand a bit.

“Of course, of course. We'll get everything set up for you. You can even visit the old family armory if it makes you feel better. Now, let's get you somewhere safe so we can get you ready, shall we? Your dress needs adjusting, you'll need your hair and makeup doing, and if we want to head to the armory for a peek then we're going to need to move quickly.”

He smiles a bit.

“I'll have Millie escort you to the armory and then bring you to my home to get ready for the ball. How does that sound?”

Okay, so...this COULD be an easy out. IF we do something about Millie once we get to the armory.

Question is, do we want to go that far? We know she's ultimately subservient to him, and he wants us dead eventually. Still, is Millie worth the risk?

She seemed reluctant to enter our mind and forcibly awaken us earlier, evidently enough to try and refuse a direct order given that our uncle had to start yelling at her. It's possible she has enough independence in her design to go against his wishes. Either way, I really, really don't want to kill her, even if it'll make things more difficult.
>>
“Actually, I'd like to make a stop for sweets along the way. I could use some food, and Millie likes them so we can split them.”

You see the blue sparks appear in front of you as Millie arrives, grinning like mad and jumping up and down.

“Sweets? For me? You're the best!”

She hugs you tightly, and Tirio rolls his eyes and smiles softly.

“Fine then. But be quick. We have a lot to prepare. I'll meet you at the house.”

He turns and starts to walk off, tossing two gold pieces to you. Millie snatches them out of the air and holds them between her fingers.

“I know this great little chocolate shop! We can get lots of it there and then go to the armory!”

“Go right ahead, Millie.”

She nods and hugs you tight again, and you feel the world shifting around you once more as Millie turns you to sparks and transports you to your destination. You arrive at a small shop at the edge of town and Millie immediately runs inside before you can stop her. You hear the sound of her yelling something about the gold, a loud crash, and the clattering of the door as she knocks it off its hinges, running out with a large wooden crate. She grabs your hand.

“No time to explain!”

There's never time to explain with her. You have just enough time to see the irritated shopkeeper run out after her before the world turns to a blur once again, this time for longer than usual. You come to a halt inside a giant stone vault of some sort, full of weapons, armor and various crystal-covered trinkets. Millie cracks open the crate, tosses you a block of chocolate, and begins gorging herself on the rest.

You wander the armory, looking for anything useful. Weapons, armor, tools. You pass by several rows of precisely that, but none of them seem to be what you're looking for. You wander around, past a few signs you don't bother to read, before you come across a series of wooden chests that catch your eye. You decide to take a quick peek and pry one of them open. The lid creaks a bit as you force it from the base, and inside you find... nothing. The other chests are the same way, and though you're sure that they exist for a reason and must contain something good, you spend several minutes cracking open chests and finding nothing inside them. By the time you decide to look elsewhere, Millie has finished her chocolate and is calling out to you, trying to track you down.

You have no idea how happy that makes me. I've wanted all my life to tell stories and write books but I've never really had confidence in my writing. Something always stopped me. So I started doing this, hoping that I could stick with it and that a few people might enjoy it. I'm 23 and stuck working a dead-end retail gig that maybe, in a few years, will earn me a living wage if I get promoted higher. So the fact that someone out there likes my writing that much, and the fact that I've written several thousand words a day for the past few weeks, makes me happy beyond words.

When I write my novel, I'll be sure to let you know.

You manage to find a decent-looking sword before Millie finds you, admiring the weapon you selected. She smiles a little bit, wiping some chocolate from her face.

“That's a nice one. It's a Gale Sword. It makes really strong wind when you swing it hard enough!”

You heft the blade and give it a practice swing, feeling the resistance of the air. If you swung it harder you could probably unleash its power, but you don't know how strong that wing would actually be.

“Do you know about all of these weapons, Millie?”

She nods and pulls a wrapped chocolate bar from her robes, ripping it open.

“Mhmm. I know everything in here. I got bored one day and memorized every last tool and trinket in here!”

She takes a bite of her chocolate and closes her eyes, letting out a soft moan and hugging the bar to her chest.

“Double dark chocolate with caramel... So good...~”

“I need a bit of help. I want to get some stuff together for tonight so I won't be helpless if something goes wrong. Armor, a weapon, that sort of thing. Can you think of anything that would suit me?”

Millie takes another bite and nods, wandering off like she's in a daze. Well, at least you've got that covered. You decide to take a look around for any concealed weaponry first, keeping an eye out for any daggers or other small blades. You find a few knives, a fan with a bladed edge and a set of throwing needles that look like hair ornaments. Not exactly what you were looking for, but options. You gather them up and keep moving.

You have better luck with the tools, and stumble upon something interesting while looking through the jewelry. A set of four rings, each tied to a different element. According to their label these are the Rings of Elemental Sway, providing control over the elements the rings are tied to. Clearly they can't be all that powerful if they're in here collecting dust, but something about them sticks out to you. Your necklace hums softly and gets warmer as you examine them.

You look your necklace over for a moment. There's a small flame inside it now, dancing within the crystal. It almost looks like the core shards from those constructs you defeated, except the glow isn't dim or fading in and out. You think you have a pretty good idea of whose this one is.

“Cenere?”

The flame inside the crystal flares brightly before dimming.

“One for yes, two for no. Should I take these rings?”

There's another flare, brighter than the last.

“Oh good.”

You snatch up the rings and do your best to conceal them, sifting through your weapons. You're more familiar with knives, but the fan is a good option for having something in hand, and the hair pins would make a good weapon of last resort. You decide to keep them all, just to be safe. With any luck you can at least sneak the fan past your uncle. Millie runs over to you smiling brightly, a sword slung over her shoulder and something large, red and shiny tucked under her arm that looks like part of a suit of armor.

“Kotijah! I found you a sword and armor! And I-”

She stops short and stares at you for a moment.

“I'm not supposed to be over here... Um... Can we go somewhere else? There's something here that daddy doesn't want me playing with... If you see any weird rings, don't touch them, ok? They're not good...”

You heft your own load of gear and shrug, following after Millie as she heads for the center of the vault. She sets down the sword before placing the chestplate from the suit of armor next to the rest of the set. With the whole set together you can see what it's all about now. The armor was likely forged from red dragon scales, and the sword's hilt has a red gemstone set into the hilt. You can guess from the flame decorations on the sheath that it bursts into flames on command. There's no helmet, just a red circlet with a ruby set into the front. Millie smiles brightly.

“This stuff used to belong to the leader of the Order of Scales! Then your dad took it here and it got forgotten about. The armor is all cast-off scales from older dragons, shaped and polished to a mirror shine, and the sword was forged with dragon fire and earth magic to make it stronger and sharper than normal steel. The armor might be a bit much at a ball, but...”

She pulls out a set of gloves from behind her back and grins.

“...if you use these you can hide your sword! And you could probably get some of the smaller pieces of armor, too... The circlet is cool, it keeps the wind out of your eyes while flying around on dragons. Or just flying.”

You set down your load, careful to conceal the rings, and smile at Millie. “You've outdone yourself. Thank you.”

You give her a hug and start putting the armor on. It fits pretty well all things considered, and you're pretty sure there's some magic on it to make it fit whoever puts it on. It isn't long before you're fully suited up. The gown doesn't quite fit properly under the armor, and it'll chafe if you wear it like this for too long without proper attire under it, but at least now you've got yourself some solid, durable protection. You grab the sword and examine it while you start to talk.

“Millie, are you a wind elemental? I've seen water, fire, earth... Which kind are you?”

Millie blushes profusely and giggles a bit.

“You shouldn't ask a girl embarrassing questions like that you know... It's like asking a woman her age! And I'm a hybrid, silly! Wind and water. Storm. I am the howling gale and the pouring rain, and the lightning that strikes the earth.”

She holds up her hand, sparks dancing between her fingers.

“For most people electricity is dangerous, but to me... It's like a little kitten. Or a lion!”

She emphasizes this fact by shooting a bolt of lightning straight up into the air with a yell. It crashes into the ceiling, leaving a scorch mark and sending small chunks of rock flying through the air.

You gather up your equipment carefully and wait for Millie to hug you. It takes her a moment to work out why you're standing still, but when she realizes she smiles and hops over to you, hugging tight and transporting you to, you presume, Tirio's home.

You arrive in his living room, where a group of tailors, makeup artists and various other staff are all chattering away while waiting for you. When you appear from nowhere in full battle armor you're pretty sure one of them faints, albeit for dramatic effect. One of them, a stern woman with short hair and a loud pipe, walks over to you.

"So this is the canvas I have to work with? Pitiful. But don't worry. While you might look like a ruffian now, I will make you a polished jewel. Hmm. Red suits you, but the armor will have to go... Mikal! Sheri! Dye that dress red and buy new shoes! We have work to do!"

Two of the men let out noises like startled animals and run out of the room, one of them taking a rather luxurious blue ball gown with him. The woman finally smiles.

"It is good to see you, darling. At last I meet the famous Kotijah Imidarius, the one who helps the helpless and who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. I am Agithel Yvontis, and I am going to make you the crown jewel of the evening."

Yvontis. Minor house, under the Sirc family, which has strong ties with the Order of Oak. Whoever she is, she's got connections with the information networks of the city.

You tug at your chest plate almost hesitantly and look her dead in the eye.

"I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but... I don't like women that way. Not that I don't respect your right to love who you love though."

She stares at you in shock, face scarlet with embarrassment and anger at your implication, but before she retorts you unclasp your armor and start to remove it.

"I'm kidding. Just a little joke to lighten the mood. If your skin is that thin I can't imagine what a little verbal jousting at a party would do to you."

She practically trembles with frustration, the hand holding her pipe shaking slightly.

"You insolent little... Tirio will have to pay me double to work with someone like you!"

You smirk slightly.

"By all means. Charge double because you couldn't handle one joke."

She hesitates for a moment, before relenting.

"Just... hurry up."

You slip off your gown and fold it, setting it aside with your belongings while Agithel examines you.

"I was expecting a smaller bust and more scars. You're mostly unblemished, which is good. Hmm. Your hair needs some work and we'll have to adjust a few things given how... ahem, well-built you are. Honestly, a countess with visible muscles... well, a glamour will cover that as well."

You roll our eyes a bit and grab your gown.

"Tirio shouldn't pay you anything at all. Clearly you're no good at your job."

She almost drops her pipe.

"Excuse me?"

You slip it back on and smile a bit.

"You need magic to make me look good. You need to cover up who I am just to make me fit what you think will be presentable. So you're no good at your job. I'm proud of my body and my strength. If all you can think to do is try to make me conform to what other people expect, then your services are no longer required."

That one hit a nerve. She snaps her pipe stem with one hand, glaring daggers at you.

"Fine! We'll do it your way!"

She storms off to the side of the room and grabs some scissors, a bolt of fabric and some pins.

"You want me to do a good job? Then shut up and hold still! I shall make you a shining star."

There's a mad glint in her eye that makes you regret every action you've taken that's led you to this moment.

With the leather to offset the silks and the silver you look like the princess of a rich and powerful barbarian tribe, the sort whose women are both lovely and fierce. You take a moment to properly examine yourself before nodding in approval.

"Works for me. Plenty of freedom of movement, and no one else will have anything close. It's an utterly unique look. Good job."

Agithel picks up the pieces of her pipe and mends it with a bit of magic.

"Of course. Now take it off, you must be bathed, scrubbed, rinsed, your hair must be taken care of along with your makeup, and you must be presented to your uncle for final approval."

You relent and decide that it's easier to just let Agithel do her thing rather than trying to fight it. Two women help you out of the dress while several other people run around preparing a large tub of water. At home on the farm you bathed in water from the river, warmed over a fire until it was tolerable, and the only person who ever touched you was your mother when you were too small to do it yourself. As you're led to the tub and directed into it, you're both surprised by the hot water on your skin and the team of assistant who promptly begin scrubbing you down, filing your nails, washing your hair, and countless other tasks that you recognize as vaguely important through the haze that sets in across your mind.

When they switch the soaps out, changing from scrubbing to softening, shampooing to conditioning and rinsing, you notice something odd. You feel happy. Content. The odd thing about it is that normally this situation would make you mildly uncomfortable. Your own maids are elemental constructs, you don't really care what they do since you can command them to do whatever you like and don't have to worry, but these are people, men and woman you don't even know, and you're trapped in a circle of them.

Something in the water, you realize, or something in all those soaps and lotions and gels is affecting your mind and making you more relaxed than you should be, more content with the situation. You can fight it off to keep a clear head, but it's still a pretty dick move to just push on someone like this. Maybe this is just expected in this city, for the nobles to kick back and immerse themselves in a drugged up coma while enjoying a nice bath. If you didn't have such a strong will, you suspect you'd be in this daze all evening, and that would have made your uncles manipulations all too easy to fall for. As they finish up and pullaway, Agithel gives you a once over.

You relax and smile, riding the edge of the high without sinking into it, keeping your mind sharp.

"I'm feeling... pretty good, actually... s'nice..."

Agithel smirks a little bit, and if you were as dazed as she seems to think you are you probably wouldn't notice the vague malice.

"Excellent, darling! Just sit back and relax, we'll have you all prepared in no time."

Another few snaps of her fingers and her assistants begin to dry you and dress you, slipping underclothes onto you and using wisps of fire magic to gently dry your hair.

They lead you over to a chair and you effect your best wobble as they sit you down and start on your hair and makeup. It doesn't take all that long, but they certainly aren't being gentle about it. The results make you look a little intimidating while emphasizing your looks; beautiful but dangerous. As you're pulled to your feet Agithel sews the dress around you once more while her assistants slip shoes onto your feet.

"There. All set to see your uncle now. Mikal, go and fetch Tirio. He's going to want to see this."

You follow him as he turns and leaves the room, fan in one hand and throwing needles in the other. He seems to pay them no mind, and you have to wonder just how much of his own armory he knows, and how much belonged to your father. You slide the needles into your hairstyle and adjust them to better disguise them as hair pins, and Tirio leads you to a large open area. It's probably used for combat drills, but right now it's set up like a mock ballroom.

You take a moment to properly examine the situation. You're not in your armor, you're in his home, and you're in heels. You're also lacking in much magical support right now unless you call on Cenere, but you're not sure if he's in a fit state to fight or what you'll need to do to call him forth. You've got the rings, but you don't know what they do or how to work them, and activating them blindly in this situation seems like a bit of a bad call. So you decide to fall back on the oldest and surest way to survive.

You stomp your feet hard enough to snap the heels from your shoes, give him a glare, and sprint towards him as fast as you can, raising your sword high before ducking low under his swing and skidding past him, turning to face him and deflecting his next attack, dodging and weaving as you back towards the door.

“Stand still! You're only making this more difficult for the both of us!”

His sword begins to glow brightly, and his next attack causes a wave of water and ice to collide with the wal after missing you by an inch. His sword glows again as he readies his next attack.

You focus, holding your hand out as he swings and catching the blast of water and ice. You manage to absorb a little energy from it, the rest simply flowing around you harmlessly. Tirio looks like he's staring at a ghost.

You start to sing, and Tirio looks confused for a moment. You see the realization hit him just as he becomes obscured by the fire, and you hear him screaming in the pain. You hear his shield hit the floor and shatter as he tries to put out the flames, using his own magic to try to extinguish himself. You end your song, but he's still busy trying to put himself out.

You charge forwards, aiming for his sword arm. He barely has time to respond, lifting his blade to block yours and missing by inches. You slam your sword into his arm just above the wrist and hear the bone crack. Tirio screams in pain, his sword clattering to the ground and shattering as he clutches at his wound. The fire dies out, revealing his burned flesh and ruined clothes. He had been wearing chainmail underneath, but it did nothing to help him. You never once aimed your sword for a killing blow, though given his current state a well-placed strike would finish him off.

“Kotijah... I beg of you... Spare me... The people of this city need their general in these dark times, they won't survive if you kill me... A-And you've proven you're better than me, haven't you? I'll slink off to some quiet place to die... Agithel will be sure of that... You have taken from me everything... Please, leave me my life...”

You hear a voice, soft, incredulous, coming from behind you.

“Kotijah?”

It's Millie. You don't need to turn around to know that she can see what you've done and the state you've put her “father” in. You also know that she's bound to his service. You can see the expression on Tirio's face change from supplication to anger as he opens his mouth to shout.

“Millie!”

You only have an instant to react. Do you cut him down, broken and dishonored, and face whatever wrath Millie has in store for you? Do you run, risking Tirio ordering her after you and hoping she resists? Or do you try to help Millie resist his orders, to preserve your life and keep her from hating you?

You turn and walk away from Tirio, heading towards Millie.

"Kill her!"

Millie stiffens and whimpers when Tirio says that.

"I-I... Please, no..."

You stand in front of Millie.

"It's what it looks like. We fought. He wanted to kill me but I spared his life because it would hurt you."

Millie begins to sob, her blindfold growing visibly damp.

"I don't want to hurt you..."

You nod and smile at her.

"And you won't. You're stronger than whatever it is that he says. You're The Thousand Petals Dancing on the Wind."

You rest a hand on her shoulder and she relaxes slightly. You can feel two of your fingers tingling, where you put on the wind and water rings.

"And neither of us are going to be afraid of him."

Millie nods a little bit and you turn to Tirio.

"She is not your plaything anymore. You've lost. I'm stronger than you are, and your last attempt to kill me has failed."

Tirio falls silent, staring, stunned.

You turn and walk away, keeping your hand on Millie's shoulder as you walk out of the room with her. Tirio doesn't make a sound, not even a single protest. You've broken his spirit, sweeping into his life like a whirlwind and overcoming his best efforts to control you, all in only a few days. Millie gives him one last pained glance before clinging to your side and crying softly against your shoulder.

“Why...?”

You don't know which question she's asking. Why did her father have to turn out to be an ass? Why did you have to come in and ruin everything? You let her cry, keeping her close, trying to puzzle it out yourself. You walk without knowing where you're going, following the path that seems to lead to the front door. You can hear voices on the other side of the door, loud ones, and when the knights rush in, knocking the door from its hinges and pouring past you, you stand your ground. One of them pauses briefly to look at you and stops, running to your side.

“Countess Imidarius! Are you alright? We heard from Lady Yvontis that your uncle challenged you to a duel after you dismissed him from the family.”

He notes the blood on your blade and stands at attention.

“I see. Well, ignorance of the law is no excuse. If he's dead then we'll have to charge you with murder. For the time being, would you mind getting into the carriage outside?”
