Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You are travelling cross-country on the ultimate road trip with your friends to gain wacky powers and establish yourself as a landmaster.

You’re currently roaming across Canada in the territory of a landmaster named Roger, who’s kindly offered to give you a lesson or two on managing your infinite cosmic power. While you’ve left Vancouver far behind, he said he’d keep up with you through the nodes he controls along your route of advance.

--

“Wow,” says Rowan, peering out the window as you drive along through Banff National Park.

Mountains swoop up on either side of you, impossibly majestic in scope. For a park you’ve never heard about, this place is pretty damn awesome. There are ice and glaciers, scenic lakes, and broad grey mountain faces. The skies are wondrously blue and cloudless over untouched evergreen forests.

“There’s the turn off,” says Vikrama, leaning up beside Mori to point out the obvious sign marking the split in the road for Bow Summit.

“Roger dodger,” she intones, slowing down a little to make the turn.

Reeber’s sitting shotgun, head and forepaws hanging out the window, tongue lolling in the fresh wind. His ears snap forward as you turn off the main road, maybe catching some movement off in the woods. Of course, you already went over this with him, so he knows better than to jump out and give chase.

A windy little drive later, you pull into the parking lot for the paved trail that leads up to the Peyto Lake Lookout, where Roger’s supposed to meet you. You bail out of the car and head up with everybody.
>>
>>41848773

Everybody’s excited to meet up with Roger again, which means nobody wants to be left behind.

It takes maybe ten minutes to head up the trail, which cuts across a sparsely forested rock-strewn slope. The sun beats down relentlessly overhead, bright and scorching.

“Ugh,” you groan, tugging your Eureka baseball cap down further over your eyes. Just a little bit further – you can see the built wood platform ahead even, where a few people mill about to gawk at the lake.

Xan stares into the distance as she hikes along beside you, looking down at the distant Peyto Lake. “It’s so... blue,” she observes.

The lake isn’t way huge nestled in the snaking valley between mountains, but it is uncannily crystal clear, and bright aquamarine in color.

“They chlorinate that thing?” you ask, squinting unhappily at the super bright color. Your eyes are starting to hurt.

“It’s fed by pure glacier runoff,” Moriah supplies. “They say it’s one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.”

Rowan and Vikrama don’t even have time for conversation. They stop every ten seconds to snap pictures of the lake, of themselves, and even of the rest of you, despite your firm protests.

Fortunately you reach the top soon enough, where you immediately take refuge in the shade of a scraggily evergreen tree. You lean against the tree bark, relieved with being out of direct sunlight for two seconds.

Looking over at the wooden platform lookout point, you spot Roger and his friends leaning on the front rail, admiring the view.
>>
Fuck yeah! Hellborn Quest!
>>

“It’s weird they beat us here,” Vikrama says, joining you in the shade. A feeling of happy amazement rolls off of her. “I keep telling myself they teleported, but magic’s still not... real to me.”

You laugh at her. “You ride origami tigers,” you tell her. “It’s too late for it not to be real for you. The whole world’s already turned into your own personal Disneyland forever.”

Vikrama smiles and wipes a bead of sweat off her cheek. “Sierra. It’s awesome,” she says. “I’ll owe you and Rowan forever for putting real magic in my world.”

You snort. “Just because life’s secretly a fantasy adventure doesn’t mean it’s not still real life,” you say. “I mean. Enjoy the feeling while it lasts. Like, for me anyway, it kind of goes away when you get told you’ve got sexy horns. It always comes full circle to guys deciding behind your back how hot you are.”

“That’s what I call pessimism, darling,” Vikrama says. “Who even told you that? Wolfgang?”

You don’t answer immediately, instead looking out to the pristine lake in the distance.

Vik laughs. “Hey baby doll,” she says in a falsely deep guy voice, “mind if I pop these balloons on your head pointers?” She stops herself short. “Mori’s brother didn’t strike me as the kind of guy who’d say things like that.”

“Well, he’s not,” you say quickly.

“Oh?”

“I kind of just asked him what he thought,” you say, finding the conversation incredibly awkward suddenly.

Vikrama’s eyes widen like a cat spotting a feather. “Oh I see,” she says. “So you were just like, hey Wolf, on a scale of one to sexy, how hot are my horns?” She says this in a kind of husky, growly voice, which you assume is her impersonation of you.

You suddenly don’t really feel like you’re in the shade at all. You feel like you’re under the spotlight. “Uh. I’m – that’s none of your freaking business what I said,” you reply. “And I don’t sound like that.” You look around for a distraction. “But enough of that crap. What do you think of Roger and his buddies? You and Nemo really hit it off. I didn’t see that coming, really.”

Vikrama nods, taking the bait. “I think it’s because I’m a dragon person.”

“Dragon person?”
>>
>>41849576

“Like a cat person,” says Vikrama, “but with dragons. Nemo’s just a really straightforward, honest guy dragon.”

“I think you have to meet more than one dragon before you declare yourself dragon ambassador prime,” you say.

“I’ve been reading about dragons my whole life,” says Vik. “I’m a qualified expert.”

You laugh. “Hokay, Miss Dragons Across Borders.”

“Maybe I’ll gain the ability to shapeshift into a dragon when you give me a land magic boon,” Vikrama muses, escaping into her wild fantasy realm.

“I guess we shouldn’t rule that out,” you say, frowning seriously.

While you and Vik chat, Roger and his friends finally notice your friends, and they get chatting. Nemo gets really into messing around with Reeber, while the others join in some kind of discussion about something.

Rowan turns around and waves you and Vikrama over. You oblige her and leave your shady haven, heading over to join the conversation.

You give Nemo a suspicious look when you push your way into the conversation circle. “Reeber’s a poor judge of character, so it doesn’t mean anything if he likes you,” you say.

“That’s okay man,” Nemo replies, giving Reeber’s shoulder a solid patting.

“So what are you losers yapping about?” you ask, looking at Ro and Roger in particular.

“I was just telling them they don’t need to be paranoid about us getting Isaac,” says Rowan.

“Which makes sense,” says Wyatt, jumping in, “since he didn’t get on your case.”

You scoff. “Man, does he ever though,” you say. “Isaac hardly gets off my case.”

Roger gives a thin smile. “Hallow being on your case doesn’t mean you’re dead is what we mean,” he says.

“We don’t usually kill things as the first answer. We’re reasonable people,” says Rowan. “We just have to deal with a lot of unreasonable things.”

“Unreasonable things,” Wyatt repeats. “Roger, I vote we change our default call sign for anything that gives us problems to ‘an unreasonable thing’.”

“I second the motion,” Nemo says, raising a hand in support of democracy.

Roger ignores them. “You only have to trust the wrong person once,” he says grimly. “Luckily it doesn’t look like you’re the wrong people.”

That means you’re the right people. Yesss. “So you’ve got some secret place around here we can get all crazy, I bet,” you say. “As much as I like these scenic overlooks, there sure are a lot of tourists mucking about.”

“Yes,” he answers, pointing up the valley. “North of here a there’s a private trail. I’ll show you.”

---

You’re in another forest, but this one switches towering redwoods and infinite ferns for stalwart evergreens and prickly underbrush, with a thick layer of pine needles on the ground. Everything’s a lot more summery and a lot less icy than the last time you ventured out into Canadian woods, but that’s to be expected, because it’s summer, not winter.
>>
>>41850214

You wend your way down a little deer trail, your party strung out along the path by a pretty wide margin. You and Roger lead the way for the most part, at least when Reeber lets you. He’s pretty firm on being point man.

Anyway, you head down hill a whole lot – almost a good half hour. You’re definitely out on your own in the woods now. Through the trees, you see the vividly bright surface of Peyto lake. Serious lakeside estates.

And then that’s when you pick up the rivulets of power flowing through the earth below and the air above. There’s a landwell nearby. And a few minutes later, you come to a little clearing rounded by big granite rocks. The furthest rock, which is also the biggest, a great chunk of raw stone, sports a shimmering silver well at the top.

“I found this a long time ago,” says Roger, planting a hiking boot on the base of the rock and leaning over his leg, “but I already have a few nearby, so I never got around to claiming it. I figured we could use it for practice.”

>You’re seriously just going to give me a landwell?

Ever since Escape From Mermentown, I've been wanting to draw it but turns out having an idea is lot easier thank acting on it. Especially when it comes to drawing cars.

Anyway, I traced some SUV and sketched the general idea around it - and added Sierra retelling flavour. Because that's how it went down, with cool music.
>>

So do you have like a chart of landwell powers that you roll for or do you just decide?
>>
>>41850308
That's indecent so of course!

“You’re seriously just giving me a landwell,” you say.

“Yep,” Roger answers curtly.

“Well. You’re not getting it back,” you say. “No take backs.”

Roger shrugs.

“Hell yes!” you say, grinning ear to ear., you go ahead, climb the rock, and claim the well.

Roger braces himself against the inevitable outwash of crimson power, but the whole scene is over by the time everybody else gets down.

You allow the well to wash off the glamor on your horns, since there’s nobody around except trustable trustees. You step back down the rock, a little more powerful than previously. (46/46 PP)

“There any real reason you didn’t do that yourself?” you ask, leaning on the rock.

Roger makes a point of not staring at your horns, but you can tell he’s fighting their magnetic pull. They’re pretty badass, so you don’t blame him. “I find land nodes all the time,” says Roger. “If I claimed each one when I came across it, it’d be easy to go overboard and lose control.”

“This is like my fifth well in a month,” you say. “I thought you thought I was going overboard as is.”

“I think you can handle a few more before you’ll have to slow down,” says Roger, looking carefully at you, looking more at something more invisible than visible. “You start to feel it when it’s too much.”

“Good to know,” you say.

“So what do you want to cover?” asks Roger. “I have all day.”

Oh geeze. What do you want to cover?

So why does Waldo think the whole Imperiate thing is all in Ranthix's head? Look at how strong we are now, then give us a decade and then remember that we are IMMORTAL.

Also the three difrent types of demon and a landmaster that can apparently gobble up landwells faster then most landmasters.

“Well there’s a bunch of stuff I want to know,” you say. “Like, how do I open portals to other worlds? How does I summon? But I guess with the time we’ve got, I’d rather figure out how to get the most out of the wells I already have.”

“All right,” says Roger. “What do you want to know?”

“Well first off,” you say, counting on a finger, “some of the wells I got earlier came with little special things attached, like there’s one that I can use to supercharge my magic. But I’ve gotten five wells, since then, and there’s nothing special about any of them that I can feel.”

“You’re overcrowded with new wells,” says Roger. “It usually takes a couple days to get a good feel for a well, but you claimed so many so quickly you bottlenecked yourself.”

“So how do I fix it?”

“You’ll have to sort them out. I’ll show you how to do that in a minute. What else did you want to know?”

“Okay,” you say, “so one thing I’ve noticed is that every landwell has a kind of charge reserve to it that I can burn off for magic. But they also burn off if I teleport from them. So it seems to me like there’s other stuff I can probably do with that power. And it’s probably stuff that I don’t need to be within arms reach of one of my landwells to do.”

“You want to know a few things you can do with node charges. Okay, we’ll cover that too,” he says.

“And this is more like a fact question than something I need help with, but what do you know about boons? I gave one to Rowan and it helped her be more angely,” you say. “Was Wyatt always a meat wizard or did he used to be a regular muggle?”

“Corpemancy is in his blood,” says Roger. “He has more to work with since he’s had some help from me, but his power didn’t come from nothing.”
>>
>>41851605

“So what would happen if I gave a boon to a regular mortal?” you ask.

“It all depends on the mortal,” Roger replies. “Boons latch onto whatever magic’s are already there. Paranormals assume normal humans lack an arcane archetype. But I think for most, if not all people, you can’t tell what their archetype is because it’s underdeveloped.”

“Hm,” you say, thoughtfully. You look over to where your friends are chilling at the edge of the clearing with Roger’s company, and find Vikrama sitting with Moriah and Nemo. They’re happy enough to give you space, looks like.

Rowan sees you looking her way. She’s up on a rock with Xan, the two of them talking with Wyatt, who’s sitting on the ground at the base of the stone. She gives you a thumbs up and goes back to hanging out.

“Hey, next time I find a well down by the bay, you want to come snap it up?” you ask Roger. “Like. If something came up and you needed to come down, for like emergencies or whatever, maybe it’d be a good idea.”

Roger considers the offer. “It’d be nice to have a well in California,” he says. “I never thought I’d go down that far south, but that’s when I thought your dad claimed that territory. If you’re offering, I won’t say no.”

“Cool,” you say. “Let’s get to it.”

Roger nods. “Ready to get down to business, eh?”

You’re a little hesitant to say yes. You’ve been trapped in your glamors all day, and especially under the bright sunny blue sky, you’re not exactly ‘dressed’ for wielding dark magics and learning cryptic secrets of the universe. But... if you’re really going to go full demon mode on Roger, you probably have to say a couple things.

“Okay, a few things first,” you say. “I’m glamored out the wazoo right now. I’d rather not be.”

Roger leans back against the rock, arms folded. “More than what you’ve got out right now,” he says, noting your horns and crown.

“Yeah, uh. Thing is, I don’t strictly speaking just have Belphegoran blood in me,” you say, going ahead and letting out your claws. Your fingers go razor sharp, black, and boney. You let the armored flesh creep up your arms and up, all the way to where it stops at your shoulders, spines jutting out from your jacket.

Roger watches your claws with a practiced calm, but you can feel a murmur of unease from within him. “You have claws,” he says, neutrally.

You smile sheepishly with your shark teeth venom fangs, small flames beginning to waver off your shoulders. “Yeah, kind of a little bit more than claws,” you say, looking at your nails. You take a second to kick off your shoes and toss your jacket onto a nearby rock so you can get stretch your legs and get your tail and wings out of their invisible prisons.

Time for confessions. “I’m pretty much the most metal person in a seven hundred mile radius,” you tell Roger. Ranthix is at least that far away, so far as you’re aware.

“You’re part Infernus,” he says. “But... you’re something else too. Something... different.” He furrows his brow, curiosity overwhelming the apprehension radiating from him.

>Yeah, that’s from my dad. He was half demon too. Or something like that.

As a race, it is not restricted to a specific archetype of magic. It doesn't work to list it with the other Archetypes of magic Sierra has, since you can't really say what impact it makes. If it makes one at all, which doesn't happen when it's underdeveloped.
>>
“Yeah, that’s my dad’s fault,” you say, tucking some of your hair behind an ear. “I’m actually half German.”

Roger feigns astonishment. “Really.”

“I’ll give you three guesses what I’ve got in my blood,” you say.

He puts a fist to his chin and gets all-deductive on you, narrowing his eyes.

“There’ve been hints,” you hint. “Remember I said not 100% physical?”

He hazards a guess. “You’re part Tataran?”

You laugh at him. “Dude, Tatarans don’t have these things,” you say, tapping yourself violently on the nose. “Second hint. I’ve got creepy eldritch tentacles too.” To demonstrate, you fist bump a couple of your shadow tendrils. “Like. Not to be all starcist or anything, but you do have tentacles, right?”

He doesn’t deign that with an answer. “You’re part Verwelken,” he says, realization dawning on him.

“Represent,” you say, tapping your chest with a fist. “Now you know my secret, you can quit faking your human face if you want. I already googled Starspawn after yesterday, so I already know you’re basically half Cthulhu. I’m not going to lose my grip on reality if you get scaly.”

Roger rubs his chin more intently, weighing the pros and cons of doing just that.

“C’mon,” you say, beckoning at him with your claws. “I won’t even judge.”

“I’ll probably regret this,” says Roger.

Yes!

He sighs and closes his eyes for a second. Then his form warps, his clothing shifting to accommodate the changing structure beneath.

Roger opens his eyes. “Don’t stare at the tentacles,” he tells you, his mouth-tentacles twitching slightly with his speech. His voice carries a weird kind of effervescent hum to it, hissing before he utters every word. Though otherwise he sounds surprisingly articulate, given his head basically became a big blotchy green octopus.

His mouth tentacles come down to about his chest, suckers and all. You don’t know if he’s got a regular mouth or a beak or whatever, but you can’t see it.
>>
Roger’s eyes shine with a sharp metallic green tint, further on the sides of his head than in his human configuration. The structure of his skull is pronounced under his thin, aquatic skin, and spiny fins stick out just behind his eye-ridges in the place of ears. As for his skin, it’s a deep sea green like kelp, and bears green speckled patterns here and there.

Roger’s arms are longer than before, and his hands have more width and length to them as well. He has six tapered fingers on each hand, the dark skin ridged and leathery at the joints. Jutting spines thrust out from his knuckles, severe and unkind.

His whole build changed as well to be a whole lot more triangular. His shoulders broadened out, and his ribcage tapers down to his waist. Roger’s clothes still fit, though they’re stretched tight in places and hang loose in others. And if you didn’t notice before, you do now – he smells heavily of wintered pine, with just a tinge of sandy beaches.

Wyatt lets loose a wolf whistle at the show of non-glamoredness. “Take it off!” he shouts.

Rowan, her feet dangling near Wyatt’s head, gives him a kick in the shoulder to shut him up.

Roger spreads his hands, his face-tentacles curling upward slightly, an awkward expression. “If you’ve got something to say, get it off your chest now. I’ve heard it all before.”

I doubt becoming a pothead is a good solution for our problems, but having a stash of medicinal-grade shit for when we're about to rampage might end up saving lives. especially if we use it in conjunction with a really, really dumb comedy flick. I recommend Space Jam.

“Sweet mercy. You're a Canadian," you say, dismayed. "Changed everything else but you couldn't change that."

“It’s always something,” Roger says wryly.

“Seriously though. I'm surprised how accurate google was for once,” you say. “Most of the time none of this crap even comes up.”

“Blame Lovecraft,” says Roger, rubbing his forehead with an arm.

“Wait. So is Cthulu like a real thing? Because you look exactly like Cthulu,” you say. And he smells like what those car air fresheners are trying to smell like. But you think that’d be a weird thing to say.

You feel a spike of annoyance from him at the mention of Cthulu, more so than you’d expect. “I get that a lot,” he says, his voice strained.

There’s something suspicious about the particular flavor of Roger’s feelings on the subject, though.

hold up. if horrorterrors can interbreed with humans, does that mean they can do the same with other things? starspawn angels? goblins? dragons?

we still need to have this question answered in regards to angels and demons, and other stuff.
>>
>>41853717
Yfw demons are immune.

But seriously Sierra has since the beginning has an aversion to drugs and drug users, even weed. We got Kethgi and shit to help us keep control and we aren't going to use a crutch.

Although deciding to self medicate with street drugs is more likely than her deciding to see a doctor on her own. Yeah for induced psychosis. Please don't forget that Marijuana is a drug and can cause paranoia and anxiety attacks instead of lethargy and euphoria. Which is why I'm okay when it's proscribed for anxiety (although still skeptical that it's just a drug grab, unless it's low thc) because there's a medical professional that can make the call if it makes it worse.

Finally, I doubt the Hollows would be cool with it.

Whatever Roger’s feeling, you’ve probably ripped enough secrets out of him for one day. “Not something you like to talk about?” you ask, tilting your head to signal you know there’s something up.

“No,” he says.

Whether he’s met Cthulu or there’s some antagonism there for whatever reason, you can respect that. “Sometimes there’s stuff that’s not worth talking about,” you observe.

“Sometimes.” Roger narrows his eyes, a strangely menacing expression coming from his aquatic features.

“All right, well, now we’re officially badass enough to do landmaster stuff,” you say. “Reveal your wisdom. I can take it.”

He nods and lifts his hands, creating a dozen fine emerald points of light in the air before him. “Visualizing the nodes I’ve claimed helps me to get started, so why don’t we start with that,” he says.

Roger begins coaching you with a couple things, which you don’t understand, but then he explains and keeps explaining, answering questions and helping you try stuff out.

The more you learn, the more you realize you don’t even have a clue about, but at least it’s a start.
