Last time, on Star Dust Quest...

The mission was wound up and came to and end, and after one final exchange of words with the strange Elyon and his companion space ghost, they left. Not only them, but you parted ways with Dani and her squad as well, but at least you have her contact information in case you'll ever need it. Not that you have it for any other reasons.

That said, you and your immediate crew returned to the Feedbacker. Pete showed you his progress on the datachip, but neither of you could make heads or tails on what the cryptic messages revealed. Alas, the answers you were seeking remain unanswered, and you still don't know what to make of Comet, above all.

“Wakey wakey,” a muted baritone voice says from the other side of your room door, accompanied by a duet of light knocks. You stir from your sleep and find yourself tangled in your blankets along with your oversized Bandit-12 revolver. Oh no, you went to sleep with it again. Wait, this is the first time that's happened. At least it's loaded.

Shrugging that thought off, you unravel yourself from your blanket and groggily step onto the cold, metal floor. You have no idea how long you've been asleep, but if Troy had decided to wake you up now, there was probably a good reason to. At least you feel refreshed, barring the strange dream you had.

Probably shouldn't mention it to your crew.

Several minutes later, you emerge from your quarters with your brown coat on. Maybe the western-like gritty thing was a bit unfitting for a space captain, but you didn't really care. Actually, you know of a few scifi's that work with this, what are you saying.

That doesn't disturb you from the sight in front of you, though. Standing outside her doorway opposite of yours is Ley'ra, her hair a furious, red mess. She looks tired in her tanktop and sports shorts, but content to have had the blessing of a good sleep. Toothbrush in mouth, too. Cute.

“Looks like you guys had a tough day, yesterday,” Troy's voice rouses you from your morning grogginess. You look to your left to see him leaning against your doorway--how you didn't notice him, you aren't sure. “What's on the schedule today, 'cap?”

“Mm... getting our asses off this planet,” you mumble, ignoring the fact that he called you 'cap. You should probably get used to that, anyways. “We should probably get to Faraday as soon as possible.”

“Sounds good. Everyone else is up, you two were the last,” he says, exchanging glances between you and Ley'ra. The girl in question closes her eyes slowly while brushing her teeth, waltzing back into her room without a word. Troy gives you a nod before walking off, presumably towards the back of the ship.

“Hrrk,” you groan, giving yourself a tall stretch.

Damn, you're hungry. Normally you aren't right after waking up, but today's an exception. Maybe it's the slight... tomato scent in the air. Closing your door behind you, you walk down the left corridor towards the mess hall, following your nose. Someone definitely made something to eat; hopefully they have some to share.

While you walk, you raise your left wrist and bring up the menu on your smart-ring, browsing over to the local Blackhawk hardware market.

Can be broached afterwards. Just a heads-up to talk to Comet at some point since she hit the sack early before.

Mostly it's to ask if she felt anything "off" during the mission, especially when we encountered the space ghosts.

Quick question does the engineering bay take up cargo space when not in use?

infantry guns we have enough of, and armor is too expensive.

if Comet can boost the Particle Blaster, buy one. if not, sell some weapons to afford a Heavy Laser Cannon.

Footsteps alert you to an approaching crew member, and when you turn the corner to the last corridor leading to the mess hall, you're met with Beth. And... something's off about her.

Her eyes meet with yours and you can see that she seems flustered, somehow. Her steps seem a little unsteady, and there is a blush on your face. Perhaps due to your instinct with messing with her, your lips curl into a smug grin.

“Well, someone looks happy today,” you remark without really knowing why.

“O-oh, hi Gavin,” she says while trying to put on a straight face. You quirk an eyebrow.

“Something wrong?”

“No,” she glowers.

“Mhmm.”

“Ugh.” With that, she closes her eyes and waves you off with a hand, stepping around you and walking away with a stiff posture. All the while, you give her an estranged look.

Shrugging it off, you continue down the hallway until you reach what you presume is the source of the tomato-y smell. Emerging into the mess hall, you see Ivan... oh.

The man is sitting on the table with a seemingly empty red-stained bowl in front of him, and you caught him in the act of just pulling his mask up. You only managed to catch a glimpse of his nose-down, but damn. Chiseled jaw and everything.

Maybe that's why Beth was flustered.

“Comrade! It is good to see you up, my friend,” he says, his arms raised and face covered in full. “I made borscht.”

Once again, you quirk an eyebrow. “Really?”

“Yes! I made plenty, and it is still warm in the pot over there,” he sings, pointing over to the stove. “Help yourself, comrade. Is family recipe.”

“It smells delicious,” you say, the tangy smell teasing your taste buds already.

“Ah, it is a quick recipe. Not fancy, but it makes do when low on ingredients, like in space ship.”
>>
>>41305550
You walk over to the said pot and pull out a bowl from the cupboard above. Upon opening the lid of the pot, your nostrils are blasted with the full scent of the soupy tomato mix, instantly sending a shiver down your spine. Greedily, you grab the nearby ladle and scoop up a serving for yourself.

Ivan remains seated, watching you as you sit down opposite to him while setting down the bowl with a spoon in your hand. Plomping down on your seat, you take one last long inhale before digging your spoon into your bowl, scooping out a generous helping of chunks of things you can't even identify. Meat? Vegetables? Who knows, you're hungry.

The first bite almost sends you over the edge, your head instinctively arching forward as if to swallow your spoon whole. However, you relent to your gluttony and saviour the taste, the ethereal taste overtaking your world for a moment. All the while, you can almost hear Ivan's grin behind his mask as he leans forward against the table, gloved palm supporting his chin.

“Hahah, it seems like Gavin can't have enough of Ivan's super borscht!” he gloats, throwing a fist into the air. You have no words to retaliate. “I will head to the cockpit, comrade. I am of understanding that we are to take off soon?”

With all of your morning willpower, you swallow your mouthful and almost gag, but recover. “Y-yeah, but I just ordered some rennovations to the ship. A quick job on the cargo bay--we're getting some engineering equipment for Troy to play around with.”

“Is wise move.”

“I figured we'd need it, especially with our... somewhat disfunctional drone. Shouldn't be more than a few minutes,” you say as Ivan begins to walk off.

“Sure thing, comrade. Just tell me when we are good to take off.”
>>
>>41305564
His footsteps get fainter as he walks towards the front of the ship, and you enjoy bite after bite of Ivan's surprisingly good cooking. Sooner than you realize it, your bowl is clean. Almost sparkling clean, but that doesn't surprise you.

At least now you're certain why Beth was flustered.

And in your gluttony, you haven't realized that Ley'ra had appeared out of nowhere and is now sitting beside you, her hair matted presumably from a bathe.

>Help yourself to another bowl, you feel like you might need it. That might be your greed talking, but who cares.
>Go check up on Comet. If she's awake, you'd at least like to have some reassurance with her. If not for her, then for you.
>Find Pete, maybe he's got more progress on the datachip.
>Go tell Troy that you're getting an Engineering Bay. Maybe that'll excite him.
>”So, Ivan made some borscht...”
>>
And I forgot to add that a new cargo space means 10 more tons of cargo stuffs.

On another note, I enjoy this slice of life too much.

“Hi,” you greet.

“Hi,” she greets back, her face pointing forwards in her morning tiredness. At least she looks happy, and you can tell that she smells the scent.

“So, Ivan made some borscht...”

“Mm?”

“It's pretty good.”

“Mm.”

“Smells good.”

“Mm.”

“In fact, I'm going to get another bowl.”

“Mmf.”

You get up from your seat and head over to the pot, taking the ladle and pouring yourself another serving. You turn around to see Ley'ra waiting behind you with an empty bowl. Giving her a smile, you offer your hand and take her bowl, giving her a serving as well.

That's when you feel the ship shake a little. You assume it's the cargo bay doors opening, no doubt Troy has already expected the arrival of the parts for the engineering bay. They're probably going to be finished installing the hardware sooner than you thought.

The both of you return to the table and you sit across from her, and you can see it on her face that she's curious of the scent. You wait, watching her as she dips her spoon into her bowl and pulls up a bite full. However, before it reaches her mouth, she shoots you a look and tilts her head.

“Why are you grinning?” she asks, suspiciously.

“Nothing.”

Her eyes dart between her spoon and you. “Did you put something in this?”

“No, nothing like that.”
>>
>>41305945
“Then, why are you smirking?”

“I just want to see your reaction.”

She lowers her spoon a bit and blinks. “Why?”

“It's good.”

“Nnh...” She sighs, eyeing her food suspiciously, now. Regardless, she shrugs and shoves the spoonful into her mouth. That's when her eyes widen, and you can swear you hear her gasp. You can't help but chuckle.

“What'd I tell you?”

“Mmf...” She almost inhales her mouthful before taking another immediate bite. Soon, she's practically shoveling the borscht into her mouth with a blush on her face. Giving yourself another chuckle, you begin to dig into your own bowl as well.

Before you know it, your bowl is sparkling clean, once again. Meanwhile, Ley'ra's leaning back against her chair with a satisfied look on her face, her eyes closed in content. She already finished her second serving.

>Go check up on Comet. If she's awake, you'd at least like to have some reassurance with her. If not for her, then for you.

“I'm gonna go check up on Troy and see how the engineering bay's coming along,” you say, getting up from your seat.

“Engineering bay?” Ley'ra echoes, standing up with her bowl in her hands.

“Yeah, I decided to get one. Would be nice to have in case something happens to the buggy or the drones.” You walk over to the sink with your bowl, turning on the faucet as you clean it quickly. You're surprised to see Ley'ra walk over to the pot of borscht. “Another serving?”

“J-just...” she stammers, biting her lip as she fills her bowl again. “Just a small one.”

“It looks the same,” you snicker, peaking over to her as you put your now clean bowl away.

“Don't judge me.” She sits down at the table once again, immediately digging in.

“I might have to go tip Ivan.” As you walk by her, you poke her shoulder. “Fatty.”

“Nrghbl.”

You exit the mess hall and quickly make your way to the cargo bay, following the sounds of heavy equipment being moved around. As soon as you enter the large room, you see several men bolting down several metal tables and shelves. Also, it seems like they installed a large vehicular platform for maintenance. A lot of machines surround it, including hoists and mechanical arms.

“Damn, Gavin. Quite a lot of new stuff, huh?” Troy's voice says, coming from your right. Leaning against a table is Troy as he watches the men work.

“Yup, I hope this suffices,” you say, leaning against the table with him.

“I can do anything with this stuff.”

“That's heart-warming to hear.”
>>
>>41306513
“Thanks, Gavin.”

“Hey, no problem. This stuff's mostly for you, so use it well.”

The two of you watch in silence for several minutes as the men finish placing the last machine in place. After the last bolt is drilled into place, they exchange waves with you as they leave the ship, carting their equipment away.

“That was fast,” Troy comments, walking towards the new engineering bay.

“Seriously, why are they always so fast? Literally, everywhere,” you mutter almost to yourself, walking along with him. He places his hand on one of the large mechanical arms by the vehicle platform, pulling the drill head off from its front.

“Exchangeable heads. Can put anything on these guys,” he says, walking over to a shelf to your right and looking at the gadgets there. “Even laser cutters.”

“Everything's to your liking?” you ask, your hands behind your back.

“Oh yeah, judging from the first looks, they knew what they were doing.”

“Sounds good, Troy.”

“Alright Troy, I might have to cut your Christmas short. We're taking off immediately,” you assert, getting his attention.

“Sure thing, Gavin,” he says, putting down a rather heavy looking tool. “I'll head to the engine room.”

“Right.” You leave and embark for the front of the ship, determined to get off the planet. The sooner you deliver your payload to the Cerberus Legion, the better. You're also eager to see what the Dustkeepers of Faraday have to say about Comet and the whole situation. Maybe they know who Elyon is, or at least what he is. What if Elyon is a Dustkeeper?

You almost trip over Bethany in your sprint to the cockpit, but you recover quickly and just manage to not step on her tail.

When you get there, you're met with Ivan facing away from you on his chair. Once again, he was just pulling on his mask, and you swore you could see short blonde hair before getting covered. He turns around to face your panting body. At that moment, you can feel and hear the engine of the ship firing up.

“Ah, Comrade. I guess we are leaving now?” he asks, his orange goggles staring straight at you. You try to focus, but you can't even see through them to his eyes, beneath.

“Yeah, we're leaving now. Troy's already in the engine room and I assume that we're already good to go.” You take a seat on your seat and buckle yourself in, glancing around your surroundings to make sure everything's in check. Outside the front window, you see nothing but the frozen tundra and cloudy skies of Jörmungandr, ending in a horizon of rocky hills that you were at just yesterday.

“Okay. I think everyone is on ship.”
>>
>>41307054
“They are,” you say, looking to a small screen to your left see everyone's signed in properly. You pick up the ship comms mic and raise it to your mouth. “Hi everyone,” you say in a neutral tone, your voice echoing through the ship. “We're about to take off for Faraday. Viktor, I'd like you to be on the gun deck if you aren't there already. Shouldn't take us more than a few hours to get there. Out.”

You put the mic down and glance over to Ivan, giving him a nod. He turns away and begins to flick several switches around him.

“Engines are all up, we are good to go,” he says, gripping the stick.

“Alright, Ivan. Take us out of here.”

You can feel the ship gently lift off of the platform, and before you know it, you're gaining altitude quickly. In a stark contrast to when you were entering the atmosphere days earlier, the trip to space was rather smooth.

Your ship breaks free of the thickest cloud layer and you're met with a warm orange light, the Ragnarok star bathing the clouds around you in a heavenly morning glow. You're soon past all the clouds, and then the atmosphere itself--you're back in space.

Just like that, Ivan points the ship towards a seemingly aimless direction and initiates your ship's warp drive.

>Stay in the cockpit while Ivan. It may be several hours before you get to Faraday, but you never know if you're needed here.

I figured we didn't have beetroot on board. It's supposed to be Ivan's "borscht with whatever the fuck I have" recipe.
>>
>>41307077
You blink your eyes as the bright light subsides, your ship jumping the first gate on your journey to Faraday.

“How was the borscht?” Ivan pipes up, and you turn to look at him.

“Amazing, Ivan. That thing just hits you in the face then makes you beg for more, seriously,” you praise, leaning against your chair. “You should teach me the recipe.”

“Hah,” he chuckles, initiating the ship warp to the next jump gate. “Maybe one day, comrade. But is secret recipe, even if simple.”

You nod your head and accept that as an answer, but you're sure he'll open up to that. Ivan's a good guy.

“What did you think of your first time on the ground?” you ask, and you can swear you hear him chuckle.

“Very strange, but very...” He pauses for a few moments, the hum of the ship engines filling the silence while he thinks for the words. “...Big. That's all I can say.”

“Open, huh?”

“Yes. Wide. I feel like I might fall into sky or... or horizon might swallow me.”

“I've felt that before. Try standing at the shore of an ocean at night.”

“I will hold you to it to show me sometime, comrade.”

You chuckle and let Ivan fly the ship for the next while. When it seems like nothing's really happening, you get up from your seat.

“I'm going to go check up on the crew, see if everyone's holding down,” you say as Ivan returns a nod.

Exiting the cockpit, you wander around the ship for a bit aimlessly, your thoughts still trained on the whole Comet situation. Maybe you'll go talk to her, you hate the feeling of loose ends left untied. What Elyon said...

Shaking the space ghost from your mind, you stumble upon the open maw of the small ship infirmary. Inside, you see a rather chipper Beth humming to herself, sitting on a lone chair in the corner.

Quietly you approach, peaking your head around the door frame. Looks like she's just browsing on her Nexus; you're certain she's looking at Arcadian cartoon-related websites.
>>
>>41307961
“Boo,” you blurt out.

“Eh,” she mutters, not taking her eyes off of the hologram screen above her gauntlet.

“So, Beth...” you drawl out, walking around the doorway and into the infirmary. She blinks--she knows something's up. “What's your opinion on chiseled jaw lines?”

Beth's resolve fails as she instinctively bites her lower lip. Her cheeks redden and her lips purse. “Wh-what?” she stammers, looking up to you with wide blue eyes.

“Tell me,” you beam with a confident tone, leaning against the infirmary bed in front of her. “Tell me that you saw the man behind the mask.”

“N... no. I don't know what you're talking about.” She waves away her hologram screen and looks away, her lips seemingly quivering.

“Oh, come on. I only catch glimpses but I can totally see the appeal.”

“Gavin, I swear...”

“Were his eyes blue, like the depths of Atlantis?” you drone in a dreamy voice.

“Oh my god.”

“Or green, like the grassy fields of Avalon?”

“Fuck off.”

“I'm bored.”

“Go do Captain-y things.”

“I am.”

“This isn't Captain-y things.”

“Tell me...”

“No.”

“Did his borscht send you... quivering?”

“Do I have to call the police or something?”

“Call the cops, they aint doing shit.”

“Seriously, what do you want?”

You laugh, shaking your head. “Sorry, I just like bugging you.”

“Well, it's not working.”

“Eh?”

“Nothing.”

Suddenly, the speakers above you bark into life as you hear somewhat frantic handling of the cockpit mic. Soon, Ivan's voice overtakes the ship's speakers, and both you and Beth exchange confused glances. You can feel your feet shifting towards the doorway already.

“Ah... ah!” Ivan's voice stutters, dripping with worrisome panic. “Gavin, we have problem! Er, uh, everyone... get to your stations!”
>>
>>41307986
Beth gives you a concerned glance, and you return a worried scowl. “Stay here, I'll call you if I need you.”

“Alright.”

Sprinting down the corridors you had just come from, you burst into the cockpit to find Ivan piloting the ship rather frantically.

“Comrade! I am using evasive manoeuvres right now,” he exclaims. Looking out the front window doesn't confirm anything for you, only that you've stopped from warping. However, looking to his screen, you are apparently among... hostiles.

You plop yourself down onto your seat and buckle yourself in. “Ivan, what's going on?”

“We have been interdicted, pulled from warp,” he says, throwing the ship in seemingly aimless direction. “I am counting... one frigate, three corvettes. 30 kilometers out, attempting to close in fast.”

“Ivan, keep on the evasive manoeuvres,” you order calmly, but sternly. He merely nods, expertly guiding the stick to keep the ship away from the approaching hostilities. “Can we not warp?”

“Interdicted, they are jamming our warp drives,” he answers.

“Alright, I'm broadcasting an ask,” you say, picking up the ship mic. Ivan nods again.

“This is the frigate-class Feedbacker. What is the meaning of this?” you ask on the broadcast, closing the mic channel shortly after. While you wait for a response, you bring up a menu on your left and initiate the ship's composition scanner to scan the enemy ships.

As confirmed with Ivan, there is one frigate-class ship and three corvette classes. They all have little to no ship armour, but the shields are thick. There is no other results, it seems they are too far for your scanner to pin down on exact hardware specs. However, it is detecting larger than normal energy signatures, so you think you can expect energy-based weapons.

With still no response to your broadcast, you bring up the mic for the inter-ship comms.

“Alright everyone, we've been pulled out of warp by a group of ships. I'd like everyone to get to your stations, this is not a drill,” you declare, keeping your cool. “Viktor, how are you doing on the gun deck?”

“We're fine,” Viktor responds, his voice speaking back to you on your headset. “Ley'ra is here on point-defence and Comet is here manning the particle blaster. Can you confirm the targets for me?”

“One frigate, three corvettes,” you respond.

“Confirmed, we're waiting for your orders.”

“Will your artillery cannon hit them from here?” you ask, glancing over to Ivan.

“It should, though moving targets from this distance may be a little difficult,” Viktor responds.

“Alright. Ivan, try to maintain this distance,” you tell Ivan, turning your attention back to the mic. “You're the best in the biz, Viktor, I'm counting on you.”
>>
>>41308504
“No promises, but I won't let you down, Gavin.”

“Good,” you say, nodding your head while looking to another screen. The four targets seem to be about 35 kilometers out now. “Troy, how are the engines?”

“Maximum load, we're going fine,” Troy responds.

“Pete, status on electronic warfare?”

After a moment of silence, Pete responds with a seemingly smug voice. “Heh, they tried getting through. Not sure with what, but they were mighty brute... we are fine, though. They're not getting past me.”

“They tried getting in, then? I have not received a response. Stand by, I may order you to scramble them soon.”

“Waiting your word, lad.”

“Beth, are you in the infirmary?” you ask, Beth being the last for you to ping.

“Yup, ready for emergency,” she responds, chipper.

You set up another broadcast to see if they'll respond. They've already attempted an electronic attack according to Pete, but you really want more clarity on the situation before going in.

“This is the Feedbacker, and it is your last warning. State your business or we will respond with force.” You turn the broadcast off and wait for a few moments. The silence stretches on for several minutes, and you find yourself losing patience. If they aren't inclined to respond immediately, you suppose their time is up.

Switching back to inter-ship comms, you address Pete. “Alright, Pete. Do your stuff.”

“Thought you'd never ask, Gavin,” Pete responds, smugly.

“Oh, by the way, relay the music to ship comms. But keep it low.”

“Eh, what? You sure?”

“I only Captain good when there's music,” you respond, almost bitterly. “Don't question my methods.”

“Whatever you say, lad.” You think there's a little bit of nervousness in Pete's voice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQIK3Te9Coo

Pete's approval: +1

“Viktor, the stage is yours,” you say. “Just fire the artillery cannon for now, we're keeping an optimal distance.”

“Gavin, are we being scrambled again?” Viktor asks through your headset, and you chuckle.

“No, that's us. Just go with it.”

“I'm not complaining,” Viktor responds. “This one is for your delicious borscht, Ivan.”

“Ahah, did you try it too, comrade?” Ivan pipes up.

“Only a little. A certain red-haired girl ate it all.”

You blink to yourself before laughing on the mic. “Ley'ra! How could you!”

“Hmph,” she responds.

For the next several moments, you keep your eyes on the tracking computer with the targets still listed. You're about 28 kilometers away now, but you don't fret. Moving over to your other terminal, you initiate another composition scan. That's when the whole ship shakes, the first artillery shell letting loose.

“Hah, that's a hit,” Viktor's voice mutters through the music. However, none of the targets blink out.

“Target is still up,” you say. “Can you confirm which one you hit?”

“I was aiming for the frigate.”

“Good.” Looking back to your scan terminal, you can now see clear scan results of the pursuing ships.

The frigate seems to be equipped with several electronic warfare dishes, one of them most likely being the warp jammer that's tacked onto your ship. It also has the highest armour and strongest shields of them, and is sporting all laser-based weaponry. Also, apparently it just let loose a heavy torpedo that's closing in on your ship.

“Torpedo incoming,” you speak, looking over to Ivan. “Can you dodge it?”
>>
>>41309389
“Will be no problem,” he responds, “very unlikely for torpedo to hit frigate. Especially one as nimble as this one.”

You nod your head, reassured from his confidence. “Ley'ra, heads up. We've got a torpedo incoming, if you could shoot it down before it hits us...”

“Got it,” she responds, stoutly.

Back to the scans, the corvettes seem to be equipped similarly, but none of them are sporting any electronic warfare modules. Powerful shields, all energy-based weapons, likely either blasters or lasers. If they get close, they'll undoubtedly tear through your shield and armour quickly.

They are now 25km away.

>Tell Ivan to speed up and keep a steady distance of 30km. Pick them off with the range of the artillery cannon, even if that may be a little slow.

“Fire the cannon at the frigate, Viktor. If you can, aim for the warp jamming dish,” you order, shifting a little in your seat to get more comfortable.

“A bit specific, especially at this range,” Viktor responds. “However, we have to get through that shield first. Loosing next shot, now.”

“Do what you can, keep targetting them,” you reassure. “Ivan, keep up this distance. They are a little faster, but try to maintain 30 kilometers.”

“I can try, comrade. They are forcing me to keep turning, so we are losing speed. Those corvettes are speeding ahead of frigate to herd us in.”

Sure enough, you see that the corvettes have suddenly boosted their speed. They are now approaching at 22km away while the frigate is at a steady 28km.

“We're... still safe--”

Several flashes ping you on another screen to your left. Your shields have taken a grazing of damage.

“We were hit, though we're fine,” you say to your crew. “If we can get that frigate disabled, we're out of here.”

“More signatures,” Ivan's voice interrupts you. Looking to the targetting screen, another frigate and corvette has appeared 50km away. They're out of range for anything to target you, but any closer and they may target you with more electronic warfare. They are behind the ships already pursuing you.

The ship shakes again from another shot by Viktor, and you patiently away for a response. After several terse seconds, he speaks.

“It hit. The frigates shields should be down, can you confirm, Gavin?”

You look over to your targeting computer. “Yes, their shields are down. Shred that frigate, Viktor.”

“Another ship signature, Gavin,” Ivan speaks, his normally chipper voice starting to waver. “40 kilometers on our... our four o'clock.”

“Fighter class ship,” you mutter, eyeing the new signatures.

“Viktor, keep firing. Ley'ra and Comet, we're a little far out for your weapons, but I need you to fire as well. We need to alpha this guy out of existence,” you order, trying to edge in the urgency.

“Got it, Gavin,” Viktor responds quickly.

“Scanning the new ships,” you say, initiating the composition scan. It doesn't seem like your scans will reach the new frigate and corvette 50km out, but you might get some basic readings on the fighter ship 40km away. You look to Ivan and give him an encouraging nod, he's flying with as much skill as he can muster.

Flipping the comms to broadcast once again, you speak. “This is the Feedbacker. State your business, or we will show a retaliation with force,” you assert as sternly as you can. You can't show any sort of weakness.

The ship shakes again as Viktor fires off the cannon again, followed by a volley from both the auto-cannons and particle blaster by Ley'ra and Comet, followed by... another burst. An explosion? Something on your hull has damaged, but your shields are still at over 90 percent. There's no way a shot could have hit. You and Ivan sit in silence for several moments, waiting for a response. You can't tell where the damage is, only that you are receiving some sort of warning flash on your ship status screen.

Your particle blaster is disabled.

“Gun deck? What happened?” you ask, a little reluctant. The corvettes are now at 17km away, continuing to close in. Red flashes are beginning to overtake your status screen as your shield takes a direct volley from hostile laser weapon fire.

“Ngh... we're fine! We're fine!” Viktor exclaims with a somewhat strained voice. “Comet... she's unconscious. Bethany, could you please make your way over to the gun deck? The particle blaster seems to have blown out.”

“On my way,” Beth responds.

“Viktor, status?”
>>
>>41310673
“We're fine. The room is smoking so it is a little distracting... all shots missed,” he says with a low tone.

“Can you continue to fire?”

“We can.”

“Is anyone else hurt?”

“No, only Comet. She seems to be breathing...”

Your heart is racing, and you can't help but feel a little worthless right now. You think this may be your last chance of escape.

However, on your targeting screen, you see that the fighter ship is now 50km out, having angled itself away from you. It seems to have regrouped with the frigate and corvette ships that came as reinforcements.

Your shields have melted down to 60 percent.

“Gavin? I know you have the shields on that frigate down, but focus your fire on the corvettes now,” a man's voice speaks on the comms, this one calm and... elegant?

After exchanging a quick, confused glance with Ivan, you open up the comms. “Uh, who is this?”

“No time to explain, but please, do as I say,” the voice responds.

The frigate and corvette that was 50km out are no longer on your targeting computer. Meanwhile, the three corvettes closing in on you are now only 15km out, their weapons blazing. The frigate you were targeting is now 26km out. The fighter is now 40km away.

This is kind of an "on the one hand, on the other hand" situation isn't it? take out frigate quickly(this part is important) have shields take the only damage and escape, again assuming it's done quickly. take out the corvettes first, reduce their damage capability, but face a longer fight.

Curiosity piqued, you initiate a composition scan on the fast-approaching fighter ship. Meanwhile, after hesitating a little, you nod your head in agreement.

“Okay, Ley'ra? Viktor? Direct your fire to corvette number one,” you order. At this point, you don't really have a choice but to follow the disembodied voice.

“...Alright, Gavin,” Viktor responds, uneasily. He's undoubtedly in worrisome right now, but you think you all are. Despite the music, even Ivan is silent. No one is giving less than their all, however.

The ship rocks as the artillery cannon is fired, followed by a quick drum roll from the autocannons. Quicker than you expected, you hear Viktor give a small, loud cheer on the comms.

“Hit! Shell broke through the shield, autocannon grazed. It's still up. Shall we fire again?”

“Good job, comrade!” Ivan cheers.

As he speaks, the corvette you just shot at has slowed itself has fallen behind the other two, apparently choosing to retreat.

The ship scan results return to you, and you're surprised to find that the fighter ship is of Talon origin. Speaking of, the ship is now at the 30km mark, and the frigate you were firing at blinks out of existence on your targeting computer.

“So... who are you?” you speak on the comms.

“Hah, I expect you have a lot of questions,” the man speaks, his voice smug.

“Hah, I expect you have a lot of questions,” the man speaks, his voice smug.

“Hmph, an Englishman,” you think you hear Pete mutter among the music.

“You're free to warp out now,” the man implores, his voice sharp as a knife. “Though, I wouldn't mind if you remained, I think we can make quick work of them. I've got a trick up my sleeve and I might need your help.”

The corvettes, now the last hostiles on the field, continue their bombardment on your ship. However, you bring up the menu to activate Bulwark and initiate it. Almost immediately, your ship slows, but you see the large, rectangular shield project backwards. As expected, the laser fire deflects off of it almost completely.

Your shields are now at 55 percent, but the corvettes are 12km away.

Would he be too close for artillery?I figured artillery worked like this
(where it has a sweet spot and going further or closer lowers the aim.).

Fire on the undamaged one. The fighter probably has something to chew through the damaged one.

The corvette with its shields down blinks out of existence on your targeting computer, presumably as the supposed fighter on your side takes it out.

“On to Corvette number two, Viktor and Ley'ra,” you say on your comms.

“Aye-aye,” Ley'ra responds.

“Cheeky,” Viktor comments.

Another volley of shots are let loose from your ship, and you're surprised to see the second corvette blink out of existence almost immediately.

“Good show, Gavin,” the man on the comms compliments. “That was a little bit of assistance from my Kraken.”

“Kraken?” you ask, but press on to a more curious question. “Mind telling us who you are, now that things have died down? You're a Talon, right?”

“Died down? Was that a pun?” the man asks. You aren't sure if he's serious.

“Well, sure. If you want it to be.”

“Okay, then. But yes, I am a Talon, if that's what you want to boil it down to.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Nothing. Call me Tabs, eh?”

“Alright, Tabs.” You blink, taken aback a little. “Are you here for demands?”

Tabs lets out a hearty laugh. “No, Gavin. In fact, I was hired for this.”

“Hired?”

“Let's continue out conversation after this last corvette's neutralized, shall we?”

>Fire your artillery cannon. (+20 to success; Kraken)
>Fire your autocannons. (+25 to success; Kraken)
>Warp out, you don't need to be delayed for nonsense. The job is most important.

A ton of ship ammunition is 30k credits from a typical station or base.

“Hm, why isn't he yielding?” you note, seeing that the last corvette is still trying to chip away at your shield. Its efforts seem fruitless, however. Your shield is now only at 50 percent damage.

“Don't worry about that, Gavin,” Tabs says, his ship closing in quick on the corvette. “These guys don't have a sense of fear. It's best we put them out of their miserable existence.”

“Eh?”

“They're from the Fire Legion. Just eliminate them as quickly as possible, trust me.”

You take in a deep breath for a moment before you realize that you've been sweating. Of course, if Tabs hadn't arrived, you don't know how you would have ended up.

“Alright Viktor, you can give the artillery a rest. Ley'ra, give the last corvette everything you've got,” you order.

“Okay,” she responds simply. After a few seconds of nothing, a rather long burst is heard from the autocannons. As expected, the final corvette disappears from your tracking computer.

“Phew! Good show, Gavin,” Tabs says through the comms. You look over to Ivan and give him a nod, which he returns slowly. The ship slows to a cruising speed. “You looked like you were almost done for there.”

“Thank you, Tabs,” you say with gratitude. “Had you not arrived, we might've been scrap.”

“Don't worry about it.” You see on the tracking computer that he's brought his ship to cruise alongside yours at only 500 meters away. “This region's been a lot more volatile as of late. It's only fitting I make my appearance now.”

“What do you mean?”

“I was hired to bodyguard you. What, she didn't tell you?” he says, almost sounding as if he was feigning ignorance.

“Wait, who? Who hired you to guard us? And why haven't you showed yourself until now?”

“Just call it Talon tradition. We don't like being seen.”

Thoughts of what had happened on the gun deck return to you. You should probably go check up on Comet in the infirmary.

“Thank you, Tabs. But the sooner we get to Faraday, the better.”

“Mmm. Normally I'd go against that, but what with the whole region becoming a hellhole, I'd say that's probably a good idea.”

His words are ominous, but a little infuriating. Again, you feel like you have no choice but to listen.

“How about I escort you to Faraday, hmm?” Tabs says.

“Aren't you going to be following us, anyways?”

“I have been following you for awhile, now.”

You sigh. “So, who hired you?”

“...Are you sure you want to know?” he teases.

“I wouldn't be asking that if I didn't.”

“...Alexandria Ashworth.” As he goes silent, you freeze up. “Your mother.”

This time, you let out a long, drawn-out sigh.

“Damn Englishmen...” Pete mutters again.

That concludes today's thread.

Next weekend, expect a double feature. I'm thinking one thread on Friday and one on Sunday.

Thanks for running.

wait....how much money does our mother have? I smell an inheritance!

Maybe you should ask her.

I think the better question is how the hell did mom get an elite space pirate to become our space bodyguard.
>>
>>41312741
"Mom! I'm trying to be a space captain! Stop interfering with my fun!"
>>
>>41312741
Well now. This takes parental protectiveness to a whole new level.

Fantastic session, SDA, you did damn good with space combat here. Looking forward to the next session!

>>“...Alexandria Ashworth.” As he goes silent, you freeze up. “Your mother.”
kek please tell me only Ivan heard that.
I don't think gavin is enough of a new to being a captain to transmit this convo throughout the whole ship.
>>
>>41312896
Thank you, I'm having a lot of fun running this with you guys.

>>41312904
Oh no, the whole ship heard. Hence why Pete muttered at the end, there.
>>
>>41312944
Also, we hit the 10 thread milestone. Yay to us.

Now for me to fade into anonymity.
>>
>>41312944
>Oh no, the whole ship heard.
WELL THEN, life as a space Captain just got a lot more akward. Not sure if this is good or bad though.....
On the one hand "hurr durr momma's boy"...
On the other hand people who say it too loudly will start disappearing.
>>
>>41312944
I'm glad! It's always a highlight of the night when you run. Your pacing is impeccable and I'm always impressed by how well you balance all these characters. It's not easy, dividing development between a cast like this, but you're pulling it off.

I imagine it might seem that I'm overpraising, but that's just how I feel, heh.
>>
>>41312741
so mom's literally keeping tabs on gavin? how quaint

thanks for the thread OP!
