This is a quest based on the Phantasy Star series of video games. You are Pheonixia, a newman force and member of the Hunter's Guild.

* Every 20 minutes, a post will be made with a series of choices to be made. Players may vote on any single or logical combination of choices. The most popular choices voted on within the first 15 minutes will be used.

* Write in votes with sufficient support may also be used.

* After the vote has been decided. The QM will roll relevant dice to determine success rate for the next progress post.

* You can follow Twitter account @sbf2009 for updates between quest sessions. https://twitter.com/sbf2009

* Previous sessions can be viewed on suptg. http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=PSOQ

The difficulty of an action will be stated as part of the choice for the vote, but not the numerical value needed to succeed. You can estimate the roll needed using the chart below.

Dice Roll Difficulty:

> Trivial (1-2): Most Hunter's Guild Members would have little trouble accomplishing this.

> Easy (3-4): Not necessarily difficult, but it would be best to let a specialist take over if available.

> Moderate (5-6): A strenuous task. If your class does not specialize in this kind of task, you may wish to find an easier alternative.

> Hard (7-9): Only an experienced guild member should risk this.

> Heroic (10-15): Not possible by even experienced guild members. Even legendary hunters like Rico Tyrell would hesitate to try such a task.

> Impossible (16+): As it sounds. Such actions defy perceptions of reality.

Last Time:

You decide to scout the nearest satellite. You use Ragol as a gravitational slingshot and coast towards a satellite on the other side of the star.

You don a space suit after docking with the ancient satellite. The airlock mechanism hisses, and you are met with two casts with human looking faces. The one on the right appears to be a large and heavily armored male. The one on the left is female, with daintier features.

“Hello. You seem to be the first visitor we've had in a long time. Nice to meet you!”

You stand staring, dumbfounded by the two casts with the bizarrely human faces.

After a short awkward silence, the male introduces himself. “I am Wren, and this is Demi. We've been trying to come in contact with your people for some time now.”

“My master understates our enthusiasm. We have been working continuously to try and retrofit our communication circuits to become more compatible with your more primitive ship. Unfortunately, all attempts at a hail have gone unanswered. We have even skipped our regular maintenance intervals to prioritize communication.”

> A. What are you two?

> B. How old are you?

> C. Is this Mother Brain?

“What...exactly are you two?”

Wren answers first. “I am Wren model 1286-001-M. I am a custodial android responsible for the maintenance of climate control systems throughout Algol. This is the man-made satellite Zelan, which has complete control over all the environmental systems for all the planets in the Algo solar system. I am the android who manages it all.”

Demi smiles shyly and bows her head towards you. “I am Demi model 1960-0060-C. My original purpose was to control Nurvus on Motavia, but since the conflict of 2284, I have been repurposed to serve my master, Wren, here on Zelan.”

“Why are you teraforming Motavia?”

Demi looks at you quizzically. “It is our programming to maintain a livable environment for Palmans.”

“Palmans?”

Wren presses a few buttons on a console, images of humans in strange looking clothes appear. “The race of sentients that largely dominated the system before the millennial disasters caused their decline. The last Palmans on Motavia died out in 3284. We have reason to believe there may be some Palmans left on Dezolis,” a picture of a mansion in a snowstorm appears on screen, “but without a spacecraft, we have no way of confirming this.”

This is a lot to soak in, but you have your people to worry about. “Do you know what happened to Pioneer I when our ship came into the system?”

Wren's face gives a weak frown. “We recorded anomalously high seismic activity, followed the emission of a black energy wave. It is reasonable to assume that nearly ever creature caught in the wave is either dead or deformed somehow.”

Rico had to have been there. But she left those messages after the explosion... But you have to stay focused on matters at hand.

“What is Mother Brain?”

“We have only records. It was the system in charge of maintaining climate systems across the three planets of Algol before the millenial disaster in 1284. It ceased operation before I was manufactured, so I only have brief historical records to rely on. Zelan and Kuran were created as a replacement for Mother Brain. Unfortunately, the Great Collapse after Mother Brain's destruction left Zelan with minimal resources to manage Motavia's climate.”

> A. Why are the animals on Motavia violent?

> B. What is a black energy wave? Do you have any data from the explosion my people can look at?

> C. Are you aware of something called Elsydeon?

“What is the black energy wave? Do you have any data from the explosion my people can look at?”

Wren turns to the console and begins pressing buttons. “I believe that machine floating around your shoulders can be used to hold the data you want. I'm sorry, but I must insist you take Demi and I to your leader to discuss the situation. I believe the emission of the black energy wave to be the signaling of another millenial disaster, and your people must be prepared for it.”

A few machines float in from seemingly nowhere, flashing photon lights directly int your MAG. You assume them to be transferring the data.

> A. I can't just take you back to the ship. How do I know you can be trusted?

“Ok, let's go. But you'll have to come disarmed.”

Wren frowns. “Demi, you stay here and continue to monitor the situation. I will board Pioneer II and attempt to establish communication after talking with their leader.”

Wren's chest opens up, seemingly disassembling itself. You see multiple parts drop out. A launcher setup for miniature rockets, a few parts you recognize and guns, a tesla coil, and some parts you can't even guess the prupose. You are tempted to try and take one to study, but you can't think of a good excuse. You decide it best to leave them there.

The two of you pile into the shuttle. It's a long trip back to Pioneer II.

“Now that we have some time, can you explain the black energy wave?”

Wren looks at you without blinking. It creeps you out a little bit, but you remind yourself he's a bit more robotic than your average cast, despite his face. “It will take a while, but the short explanation is that it is a form of radiation with supernatural origins.”

He explains the physical makeup of black energy, which is so far above your head that you end up doing a crash course in physics Coralian science has yet to discover. Eventually you get to understand what dark energy can do to people, though the details on how it works are still a bit fuzzy to you.

“...wait wait. What do you mean the radiation 'decides' it's half life?” You rub your temples, happy to be learning something so far beyond what you've learned in school or the Lab, but suffering from a headache fro it.

“The source of the energy, Dark Force, is a manifestation of an evil entity beyond our dimension. This entity, the Profound Darkness, is sealed in a dimensional rift anchored on this system's star. Every one thousand years, the seal weakens enough for it to send its manifestations out. These manifestations, and in turn, their creations, have agency to do harm to any life on the planet. Sometimes, dark energy poisoning takes on the form of standard radiation poisoning. Other times, it mutates the victim into a violent, more grotesque version of itself. In some forms, the radiation can even take hold of the victim's mind and body, blending itself into society before it mutates itself into another manifestation of Dark Force. I have witnessed all such occurrences during my time on Motavia and Dezolis. Luckily, I was not affected.”

“How could you, you're a c- an android.”

Wren frowns. “Remember, the radiation has agency. It can choose to reprogram machines to do its bidding.”

Pioneer II comes into view.

The two of you step out of the shuttle bay and head toward the main district. Wren gets a lot of attention from the people on the street. No one has ever seen a cast with a human face before.

The two of you step into the elevator to the Principal's Office.

Wren hasn't said a word since you've arrived on board. In the privacy of the elevator, he finally speaks up. “You did not warn me the people of this ship did not speak Palman.”

“What do you mean?”

“The language of the ancient Palmans. You speak it perfectly, but everyone on board is speaking a language I am still attempting to assimilate. Unsurprisingly, it has no common root with Palman.”

You are utterly confused “How could I possibly speak an language of a people who I've never met?”

“I took it as a lucky coincidence, or some form of quirk with intelligent life.” He turns to look at you. “Did you not notice what language you were speaking?”

“Yes! Coralian Basic, just like everyone else on this ship!” This is starting to piss you off. If this is a joke, it's a bad one.

Irene greets you and ushers you in without asking an appointment. You must be seen as a regular fixture around the office at this point.

When you enter Tyrell's office, he swivels his chair around to great you. “I trust by your quick return that you've foun- What in God's name is that?” He stands up, shocked.

“My.... apologies....Principal. I am... Wren... model... 1286-001-M. I am... still... assimilating... your language.”

If we don't get some stronger attendance in the next update or so, I think we'll end early and pick up around Tuesday night. Hopefully we can get back to exploring Ragol soon.

“Sir, this is Wren. I found him and another cast on board the satellite sharing the orbit with Ragol. It's called Zelan, and it's responsible for maintaining Ragol's environmental systems. “

Tyrell walks around the desk to look at Wren up close. “How long has this thing been sitting on that satellite?”

“Approximately... two thousand... years.” Wren is still struggling to speak.

“The face...it's really well made. But back to the topic on hand.” Tyrell clears his throat. “This satellite, can it influence the wildlife on Ragol?

“No... it cannot. Zelan... lacks...complete control... over... the bio-plants...on...Ragol.”

Tyrell looks confused. “Bio-plant?”

You decide to take over to prevent the three of you from being stuck here all day. “There are a series of systems on Ragol that control production of wildlife, among other things.”

“You mean to tell me everything on that planet comes out of a test tube?”

“At...one point....yes. Ragol...'s...current state...has grown...beyond...my control.” Wren answers.

“Pheonixia, I want you to go find that plant and set up a conduit for our people to take over as soon as you can.”

“Might I suggest that we send some people over to Zelan to collect data?”

“Yes, that seems like a good idea. I'll tell the lab to send a team over.” Tyrell sits back down at his desk.

Wren frowns again. “I must...insist...that...you...review data...concerning...Pioneer I...'s...disaster.” Wren motions to your MAG. This is going to be a long night.
