You are Jack O'Connor, better known to the public as the superhero FREEDOM EAGLE, and you wish you could say this is the first time you've been surrounded by angry supervillIains with your back to only one other ally.

But that would be a lie.

The music at Joy's thumps around you an civilians dance and enjoy themselves, while you carefully tense up, ready for trouble.

Your costume doesn't catch nearly as much attention as you'd have thought, but then again this place DOES cater to Stormers and superhumans of all types.

And judging by the number of angry faces turning your way, it does supervillains too.

"Nice atmosphere," you say to Envoy at your back, who hasn't yet drawn her weapon.

"Very," she replies. "Like a second home really. If this thing with you doesn't work out I might move in here even."

You smile a bit.
Lyna's new at superheroing, but she's getting the banter part down pretty fast.
>>
You momentarily take your eyes off the crowd of villains and look up at the large spiral staircase in the center of the room where Madame Joy stand, leaning over the rail.

She definitely doesn't LOOK like she's in her 90's, that's for sure.
Her long hair is as black as yours or Lyna's and does that thing where it seems to constantly cover ons eye or the other, and she has an extremely healthy figure.

She wears a magenta dress cut high on one side with a large pink stripe down the center and matching elbow-length boots and gloves.

"So, how do you like my budouir, hero?" she asks, theatrically spreading her arms wide.

"Not bad I guess," you say, shouting loud enough to be heard over the music. "Bit of an unfriendly crowd though."

She smiles, and beckons for you to follow her up the stairs.
Seeing few choices at the moment (and not liking your odds if a fight breaks out among the civilians) you follow with Lyna at your side, and many of the villains follow as well.

Great.

The second floor is the gentleman's establishment, a place that's relatively classy with smoky lighting and jazzy music. The girls on the stages are stellar, and some obviously not quite human.

One woman, a beauty with orange skin with black stripes all over it with black hair with orange streaks in it gyrates around her stage, giving you a wink.

You'd wind back if all the damn supervillains hadn't followed you and are now much closer to surrounding you in this basically civilian-less environment. You notice the Japanese-looking thugs led by the guy in the white Armani jacket with the black silk undershirt is with them.

Goons, you guess?
All good villains need goons.

A hugely muscular man with black scaly skin in a black turtleneck with black slacks strides over to stand next to Madame Joy, who stands apart and watches the scene.
>>
One of the villains, one you recognize even, walks up to you.

He's about your height, wearing articulated armor covered in plates and padding like a modern knight. His helmet is nearly identical to an Olympic fencing helmet, only made out of the same material with an opaque black face-guard.

"Well...if it isn't the Flying Freedom Eagle," he says, his voice muffled through the helmet, drawing a basket-hilted broadsword at his side, the blade wide enough to fence with but heavy enough to chop with. "I'm pretty sure I'd said you're regret crossing me if we ever met again...."

"You'll have to remind me if you did or not," you reply, shifting your weight into a defensive stance, cybernetically commanding the pseudometal of the Gravity Gauntlets to harden to maximum durability, "because I uh...kinda don't remember you."

You can't see his facial expression but you can tell that irritated him. Good.

"Don't pretend like you don't remember!"

"Okay, I won't. So who the hell are you?"

"The Fencer, you idiot! I'm the Fencer!" he growls in increasing fury, taking up a fencing stance in anger.

"Sorry, not ringing a bell," you say with a shrug.

"You put me in JAIL!" he shouts, angry now.

"Yeah, you're gonna have to narrow that one a bit more," you say with a chortle.

"For attacking ASTRO Labs a year ago?!"

"Narrower."

"With a SWORD! I attacked ASTRO Labs with a a SWORD, and nearly beat you while I was at it!"

"Yeah, THAT I don't remember for sure. Sure you haven't done some mental editing in jail there buddy? Or wait, maybe it was another guy entirely; Cardinal looks like me, maybe it was Cardinal?" you say helpfully.

"RRRAGH! I swear to GOD I'm gonna KILL-" he says, getting ready to lunge, but Joy's voice cuts him off.

"No," she commands simply.

"What?!" Fencer and a few others cry in surprise.

"No. My club, you know the rules," she says, making a gentle but firm slashing motion with her hand.
>>
>>40700716
>*tut* shoulda gotten a restraining order.
>>
"Hey, who's side are you on?!" a guy in some kinda padded red and orange suit with goggles and a futuristic ray gun thing says.

"The same side EVERYONE here is on," she says cooly. "MY side, and nobody else's."

"Yeah, firmly on the side of justice over here, actually," you say with a raised finger.

"Well maybe I don't give a shit about your stupid neutrality!" Fencer says, moving back into a fighting stance. "Maybe I'll just kill him right here!"

"You could TRY D'Artangion, doesn't mean you'd succeed," you shoot back.

"If you did, you would also be facing Mister Snake-Eyes here," she says, laying a gloved hand on the black scaled man's hugely muscular arm as he folds them, putting his hand in reach of his gun.

The other heavily muscled bouncers and security tense up at the unspoken signal.

"My too," the Japanese man suddenly says, much to your surprise. He has no accent at all. His Japanese motorcycle gang-looking goons tense up and ready for his order, reaching for weapons. "I won't have you breaking Madame Joy's neutrality and my father's agreement."

"Are you SERIOUS?!" Fencer say, looking at the array of muscle amassed against him. "You're just going to let him WALK?!"

Nobody says anything.

He storms out with a growl, frustrated, followed by most of the supervillains.

"Very clever, Freedom Eagle. Come, sit down," she says, offering you a place at a nearby stage. "Did you REALLY not remember him?"

>WDYS?

"Philip Javart," you begin reciting as you sit down next to the stage with the tiger-chick on it. "Born in 1987, American mother, French-Canadian father. He was a shoe in-for America's entry in all three fencing catagories for the next Olympics, being possibly the first American entry in that sport to genuinely compete with the European nations with a high chance of winning the Gold."

She crosses her legs attractively and smiles, leaning on her arm and listening to you talk.

"It was unfortunately discovered he was abusing various performance-enhancers, with the tactic approval and aid of his coach (which tells you a lot about the American sports industry really), so he was disqualified. He took to crime in anger, and was fined. After bail he mocked up the costume. Later he (and I admit to not knowing how) stole a blade made out of Impervium (the most resilient substance on Earth) on that made him even more dangerous as a foe, and started going full-supervillain."

Joy claps lightly, and even Lyna seems impressed.

"It seems your mind is as impressive as the rest of you, hero!" she compliments, her voice a-purr.

"Comparing me with the last guy who wore the wings, grandma?" you say with a smirk.

Her smile falters a bit as the cat-chick gyrates lower and lower, obviously trying to get your attention.
Mostly it's just irritating and distracting.

"Very clever indeed," she compliments. "I knew you weren't the same man obviously, but I didn't know how much you knew."

"So you DON'T age then," Lyna says, still tense.

"Not exactly, no," she says, smiling again.

You immediately silently activate your helmet's scanning systems as you continue chatting with her.

"Anyway, sorta confused what this is all about," you say, looking around casually, your visor scanning the room before going back to her.

>HUMAN, BASELINE

>HUMAN, BASELINE

Weird.
It's having a hard trouble identifying her. That rings a bell but you can't place it.

"I'm curious as to how you know Ryu though," she says, nodding in the direction of the staircase down, obviously meaning the Japanese guy. "You're just full of surprises aren't you?"

"Don't know him," you admit, narrowing your eyes behind your visor as you glance back at the guy and his bosozoku as they head back downstairs. "But I think I met his sister once or twice."

"Kinda curious as to why we're here," you say, motioning at Lyna as well. "This place doesn't exactly look friendly to capes."

"My club is friendly to EVERYONE, Freedom Eagle," she explains. "Superheroes included. It's just never been apparent to most of my clientele until right this very moment."

"So," you say, folding your arms as the cat chick finally decides to stop playing subtle and gets off the stage to straddle you while dancing, forcing your to try and look around her with and irritated expression on your face. "Then you're really sticking to the whole 'neutral ground' thing, huh?"

"Indeed," she says with a smile. "I can see which way the wind is blowing. Kitty seems to like you, by the way."

Kitty? Seriously? Doesn't this chick have a little pride in her supername?
I mean, she's a super-stripper for sure, but still. Standards.

"Yeah, I noticed," you say as she wraps her arms around your neck and purrs a bit, her Amber eyes narrowing to slits like a cat's.

Lyna looks at the spectacle, obviously mildly peeved.

You gently place your hands on "Kitty's" gyrating hips, then lift her up and drop her back on stage like an overly friendly cat you don't particularly want on your lap right now.

She crosses her arms and turns away, pouting dramatically.

You roll your eyes behind the mask.

If you ever want to know more or less what classic Avengers adventures were like, I'd highly recommend it.

It had adaptions of MANY famous Avengers storylines that they were remarkably faithful to while distilling elements from newer storylines to freshen up the mixture.

As a lover of classic comics, it was a favorite of mine.
>>
"So you're just showing me the score, huh?" you say, narrowing your eyes.

"Exactly," she says with a nod.

"Meaning you won't tell me about Anvil."

"Correct."

"Or a big glowing brain," you say, and she falters a bit when you say it.

"No. Not that either. And if you were in the business of keeping yourself alive and healthy, I'd suggest sticking to street crime and bank robberies rather then asking questions about The Big Brain," she advises cooly.

"I didn't say 'The Big Brain'. I said 'a big glowing brain'," you point out, and her smile vanishes this time.

"It's a shame," she says after a tense minute, "that I never got to engage in such stimulating wordplay with your predecessor. I might have challenged him more often if that was the case."

"That's me. I'm a trailblazer," you say, sitting up. "I'm sure we'll see each other again."

"I'm sure," she agrees as you head downstairs with Lyna, who still looks ready to fight.

"Relax. I think we're safe," you reassure

"I'm not certain exactly of what just happened," she admits.

You're about to answer but the Japanese guy in the suit walks up with his boys and you instead say "I'll explain later."

You pause for a second, before nodding.

"Sure. How's your sister?" you say, and Lyna looks at you in surprise, then thinks, obviously putting it together.

The Japanese man looks even more surprised then she for a second.

"How'd you know who I was?" he asks suspiciously, but not angrily. He's just curious.

"You look a little like your twin, Takazumi Ryu-san," you admit to the son of the Takazumi-gumi Yakuza, brother to Takazumi Tomiko.

"So are you taking me to somewhere or is this your dad asking you to take me somewhere?" you ask as you walk with him.

"Both," he admits. "I owe you a debt of honor for helping my family, and my father wants to speak to you for helping my sister."

Ah, yes. The "Yakuza Honor" thing.
You've heard of it but not seen much of it the few times you worked against them.
You guess you'll see how the hype holds up to reality.

"That why you backed us back there too?" you inquire.

"That, and that we respect Madame Joy's neutrality," he explains as you reach outside where a white Rolls-Royce limo rolls up to the door, which opens for you and Ryu.

"Not her. My father specified just you," he says.

Lyna looks ready to argue, but you shake your head.
If they wanted to ambush you or lure you into a trap, advertising who they are is not something the Yakuza would do you think.

Besides, if the Oyabun really IS just being polite, then bringing along and uninvited guest would be disrespectful.

"Head out on patrol, Envoy," you say to her. "And watch yourself."

"Be careful," she whispers back. "I do not trust these men."

You slide into the limbo next to Ryu and the door shuts behind you.
>>
Every once in awhile you do something in costume that reminds you of just how silly you look in the costume doing anything other then the regular stuff superheroes do.

Sitting in the back of brightly-lit limousine with Ryu Takazumi seated across from you is definitely one if those times.

"So what's this deal between you and your sister?" you ask leaning against the door, resting your chin between your pointer finger and thumb.

"What deal?" he says, shrugging.

"You don't like her much?" you ask.

"She's my sister. I honor her as a sibling and as another member of my family," he answers diplomatically.

"Not the same thing as liking her," you point out helpfully. "Come on guy, I know how it is; I've HAD kid sisters before, they're always doing something to piss you off, and your twin seems a lot more irritating than mine were."

It's a lie of course, but an effective one.
He hesitates before giving an answer.

"I'm not certain she knows her place," he says by way of explanation.

Hm. Interesting.
Trouble in the family? You wonder if daddy knows about it.

The limo eventually pulls into the parking complex beneath Harada Tower, a huge 65-floor skyscraper in the downtown area. It's honestly not too far from your own penthouse and offices at Freedom Enterprises, but the downtown area here isn't quite as sprawling as New York City or Freedom City's is.

You get out and follow the bodyguards and Ryu (you note that his bosozoku gang stays downstairs and doesn't follow) to the large private elevator.

The ride is short, and takes you all the way to the top floor penthouse, which is done up (impressively) like a traditional wealthy Japanese household on the interior.

You give a low whistle.
This must have been one expensive as hell place to put together.

"Kobanwa, Freedom Eagle-san," a deeper voice with a much stronger accent says across the guest room.

Seated at a tea table is an older Japanese man who still looks extremely healthy for his age.
His slicked-back black hair is going slightly grey, but it just ads an air of dignity to his face, with seems at once calm and commanding at the same time.

He's wearing a silken slate-grey kimono and appears to be laying out tea.

"Greetings Mister Takazumi," you say politely, sitting down across from him when he offers you a spot.

"I wanted to thank you for what you did for my daughter," he says, and on cue a woman in a red kimono gently walks out, bringing the tea.

"She's so demure and refined that she looks nothing at all to you like Tomiko honestly, until she looks at you and you get that knowing "I know you think I'm hot" smirk she wore when she wore her less conservative clothing earlier. It's gone as soon as it appears though, and only her brother, leaning against the far wall, notices it.

"I already told her; thanks aren't necessary. Saving people is pretty much what I do," you explain, letting him pour the tea, even drinking some. You suppose it's good; you don't know tea.

"But it is still not what many do. Such a noble act creates a debt of honor. And while I am many things, I am still a man of honor. From what I have heard of you, you are as well. I think you understand this, yes?" he asks.

You carefully examine the man.
He's tall and powerfully built, like he regularly engages in exercise.
Even more notable however is his posture. He sits like he's totally unafraid of you. It could just be that you're in his home base and surrounded by his bodyguards, not to mention the years of cool-headednedd that comes from being a big-time syndicate boss, but he seems to not concern himself at all that you could potentially seriously injure him and everyone else in this room.

You start to wonder if the rumors of Takazumi Kaneda being a big-time badass in Japan are wholly justified.

Jack is approximately 6'0" tall, around 210lbs, has broad shoulders but a lean, athletic build.

He has black hair kept short and bright green eyes and as a civilian tends to wear a variety of casual but tasteful fashions, especially favoring business attire.

Though he doesn't flaunt it or show it off much (his helmet covers much of his freatures) he is generally considered very attractive by the opposite sex (even by the standards of superheroes), but hasn't actually made that much use out of it in his life thanks to a persustsnt dedication to his education and careers as agent of AEGIS, a businessman, and a superhero.

The flight helmet has both a communications uplink and an extremely sophisticated analysis system.

The helmet can "hear" all radio frequencies (which he uses to respond to emergencies) and has a built-in radio communicator that has a full radius of 5 miles.

It's visor gives him a compass, distance measurement, an internal clock, and flight altitude and speed aids.
It can filter through UV light, low-light, and infravision modes, and has up to x100 magnification.
It's most versatile ability is it's analysis engine, which allows to to analyze in detail anything Jack is looking at, giving him an extremely wide array of information at his fingertips to aid in investigations and combat.

It has no wifi and can't "interface" with computers however; Jack has to use his hands like anybody for that.
In addition the analysis computer can't analyze anything it can't "see", so while Jack can look at someone and get a very good idea of their height and weight and whatbtheir skin is composed out of or look at devices or energy blasts and see their composition or structure, he cannot analyze someone's genetics without his lab back at the Aerie because genes are too small for the visor to pick up on and analyze.

He CAN however analyze trace particles or residue on physical objects.

Fletcher "Fletch" Beaumont III, better known to the public as The Bowman was indeed on the original Next-Gen team with Jack.

To make a sports comparison, Fletch was the all-star player, but Jack was team captain and General strategist.

More members of the original Next-Gen team will show up during the course of the game.

In classic comic book fashion, the majority of the stories will be unrelated one-offs with returning characters and occasionally returning villains while developing the driving sub-plots of the storyline at the same time.

Every time Wings solves a "case" you will be given a choice that will determine which case you pursue next.

What >>40715437 said.
Also the comic book market is something of a dying industry these days from a realistic employment perspective.

The opinion of the average superhero fan is that Superheros have never been more popular what with movies and all that coming out (which I can agree with) but it actually never translates into comic book sales, much as most watchers of Game of Thrones never transition towards reading the novels.

In fact the Big Two have even worse sales of their comics now then they did just before the early 2000's when the Comics Crash of '94 was causing the industry to bleed out faster then hell.

Both have been effectively propped up by the parent companies that own both Marvel and DC (which have both notably been restructured into "Marvel Entertainment" and "DC Entertainment") at an effective loss on the comics-selling front (most comics are made at a significant financial loss to the creator these days anyway) because their intellectual properties are worth quite a bit as major film projects show.

Smaller publishers eek out a meager existence on the fringes of the market by having low to non-existent overhead costs by not having a centralized management system.
>>
>>40715420
Pretty sure it was mostly OOC mentions i.e. there is a superhero out there that is pretty much Bats except with ravens (which by itself dances around the copyright anyway). And there was a pretty-much-Joker but he got lethaled. So on.

Really I'm pretty sure the main factor is that it's actually hard fucking work to make it become a real book.
>>
>>40715665
>Really I'm pretty sure the main factor is that it's actually hard fucking work to make it become a real book.

Hard work with little or no chance of publication and less chance of financial payoff, no less.

Also, I can't draw for shit and that skill is pretty much a requirement to break into the smaller comics publishing area; nobody cares about writers unless they already have comics writing successes under their belt or have inroads into the industry.

In case my explanation wasn't clear; every single comic book could fail at DC and DC wouldn't care at all.
Close to single comic book at DC in fact IS failing financially as a point of fact; only one title at DC (Convergence) broke the 100k issues sold market, which is how much a comic needs to sell at DC and Marvel for a comic to break even.

Not make money mind you; break even. As in no money is made by the company.

"While I respect your need to repay a debt you feel is incurred by my actions, Mister Takazumi, I don't feel this is fair. I DID indeed save your daughter from Catamount and Anvil, it's true, but in both cases I wasn't even aware she was there until the attack was well underway, and my express goal was saving EVERYONE in the attacks, not specifically your daughter. Altruism requires no debts of honor or rumineration," you explain. "Besides that, we'll be working at cross-purposes here in Emerald City, and while I do respect a man who keeps his debts I wouldn't want to burden you with the debts of someone who actively plans to be an enemy of yours."

There's an awkward pause before Kaneda Takezumi begins to quietly laugh, much to the obvious surprise of Tomiko and Ryu.

"I've never quite men another man who managed to be so polite and so blunt at the same time," he admits. "But I shall STILL repay my debt. By answering your questions. Two of them; one for each time you have saved my daughter."

You hesitate at that.

You DO need information, desperately.
You don't have the contacts or existing network here in Emerald you did in Freedom City, and this lack of info has been hurting your ability to control crime beyond the odd out of control Stormer.

You suspect he will abide by the letter of the agreement and answer the two questions you asks a faithfully as he can.

The only question is, what to ask him? Just because he WILL answer any questions you can ask, doesn't mean he'll have the correct answers, or even useful ones.....

>What Do You Ask?

>>
>>40716234
>"What do you know about smuggled super-science technology?
>"Why was the supervillain crime in Emerald City so low until recently?"
>>
You pause as you carefully consider your first question.

"Okay....why was crime so low in Emerald City? Supervillain events specifically, but regular crime too, even? It was nearly non-existent until the Silver Storm hit, which doesn't make sense, especially since supervillain crimes are so spectacularly random in the first place."

He smiles a bit.
"You know, a lesser man would not even think to ask such an important question, or even know it was a question to be asked," he says, and there's a note of respect in his voice.

He inhales and begins to answer.

"Until very recently most crime in Emerald City was controlled by The Chamber, a secret council of influential individuals in the local underworld with much influence beyond it as well. I was a part of this organization myself. It was a tacticit agreement that crime should be reduced to an absolute minimum for people working outside the confines of the law in this country, that Emerald City might be a haven for such individuals. A place where one could go to spend ill-gotten gains, find what could not be found elsewhere, and lay low from the law. The organizations that made up The Chamber ensured that Emerald City became and stayed this place, for decades. I believe The Chamber was started by one of the organizations, a group ostentatiously called The Fraternal Order of Evil, or even more garishly, FOE. Why it was created in the first place and by whom I do not know, but The Chamber worked quite well until very recently," he explains.

"The Silver Storm," you state.
Some things are beginning to make sense now.

"Correct. The Storm disrupted a balance of power over thirty years old in Emerald City, and The Chamber has been...well, suffice to say it is no longer a functional entity anynore. You are not the ONLY person interested in discovering the origins of the Silver Storm, I assure you hero."
>>
>>40716595
Rather than ask about the Big Brain, say that the individual known as the Big Brain is responsible for hiring Anvil to kidnap his daughter. If he wants to handle that himself, it's one less job for us to worry about.
>>
>>40716641
Saves on a question too, which is nice.
>>
Is Big Brain the man behind the curtain?
Is he just a supervillain that doesn't want to show other people his true identity, so he projects a holographic image of a brain?
Is that why Anvil said he glows? Because he's a projection?

Is everything in this city just a big Wizard of Oz pun?

>>
"Okay, next one; what do you know about super-science smuggling into Emerald City?" you ask.

"I myself don't dabble in such matters," he admits. "It's mostly too unstable a field for reasonable investments. But several other groups DO use super-science, and much of it is developed here in the city, thanks to the...well, unique atmosphere of the city's underworld. A large organization that deals exclusively with super-science however is Ghostworks. They were a member of The Chamber of course, one mostly ignored by the others for it's somewhat amusing devotion to mad science of all kinds. They delight in experimentation and new discoveries, selling such things on the black market and then using their funds to fuel more illegal research and experimentation. Like all of The Chamber they've since gone their own way after the Storm, though I hear they're intensely interested in discovering who and what caused it."

You've heard of Ghostworks actually; they were a a dangerous organization in the underground in the 80's and early 90's, but they got taken over by a rival science organization called The Foundery led by the infamous android supervillain Talos as far as you heard.

You decide to process these thoughts elsewhere, politely bowing to Oyabun Takezumi and heading not for the door, but for the window, which you politely open.

"I should warn you, hero, that Emerald City still has more secrets then what I've told you," he notes coolly. "Obviously more then even we knew, if something like the Storm Could happen."

You turn slightly and nod.

"If I were you Mister Takezumi, I'd hope we don't meet again. I don't think the next meeting will be as friendly as this one," you warn. It's only polite.

He smiles, again seeming utterly unafraid of your reputation and skills.

"I will hope that hero," he agrees, "for YOUR sake."

You pause for a second at that before leaping out the window and spreading your wings as you dive into the night sky.

You gotta make some calls.

And that somehow they succeeded in remaining hidden and unknown for over thirty years without AEGIS ever catching wind of it even once?"

"It's not even that weird an idea," you say with a shrug unseen by her as you fly through the cityscape.

"Explain to me HOW it's not a weird idea, Freedom Eagle," she says, still tired.

"Right now UNISON is monitoring with the help of AEGIS an island in the Pacific Ocean relatively near Japan populated entirely by giant monsters," you point out.

"Kaiju Island, I know. Your point?"

"At the same time AEGIS is monitoring the Bermuda Triangle because the entire region is a huge metastable dimensional anomaly that has been the cause of ship and plane crashes for decades. This anomoly leads to different times, places, and alternate universes. Once I was transported to a Lost World populated by primitive cultures and, not even kidding here, actual dinosaurs," you continue.

"Okay, but what does that have to do with-" she says, but you interrupt again.

"The basic design for my flight harnass is over five thousand years old, and I'm not even allowed to tell you who designed it originally, because the guy who did it is still alive and I promised not to tell anyone," you go on.

"I...I didn't know that. Who-" she says, still confused.

"The Earth is full of underground caverns that go for miles populated by actual morlocks and (I have on good information) the degenerate descendants of an ancient race of Serpent People who predate mankind."

"....your point?"

"A thousand impossible things happen every day. Is a secret society of supervillains and syndicates lasting thirty years REALLY that hard to imagine?"

"Besides Maddox, I know you were ECPD before you joined AEGIS. You're the native here and you worked with the agency here longer then I did. Does any of this seem that unlikely to you?"

She pauses before answering.

"No," she admits. "It even makes a kind of sense. Cases dropped for no reason when I was with the ECPD and AEGIS here...hell, Powers put me in charge of AEGIS in this area to clean up the suspicious level of inefficiency here. I have been, but the more I look into it the more it seems deliberate mishandling. This Chamber you're talking about is actually a good explanation as to why. Emerald City clearly has needed the agency's attention for a lot longer then it has had it."

That's the same negative mentality, only you're not venturing anything so there's an automatic net gain of nothing.

So now let's talk about the real why not, because you don't believe you can do it. You've made your point clear that you lack the talent to draw, but aren't there a wealth of drawfags? Coincidentally, these people hang around the same boards as writefags.

Here's the sales charts by the month of you don't believe me.

http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales.html

>That's the same negative mentality, only you're not venturing anything so there's an automatic net gain of nothing

Unfortunately, I DO have bills to pay.
I'd love to work on comics for a living, but it's a very time-consuming enterprise and I already have trouble finding time doing these quests and doing what I need to do to sustain myself as a human being financially.

>So I ask, what is really stopping you from building towards a higher form of what you love?

Lack of industry contacts I suppose?
You know, you can't actually apply to work at a comics company as a writer. You can sometimes offer to work as an artist to help fix or touch up panel work in individual issues and graduate to full-time artists, but I've actually checked; there's no way as a writer to walk up and say "hey, here's my scripts, can I try for a job here" without having art also attached to it and it being a small label, or without them asking for "new talent" first.

That's why you might notice an increasingly small number of authors writing an increasingly large number of books at Marvel and DC; it's basically a really insular industry at heart.

Hell, the reason you keep hearing about comics authors leaving the Big Two is because both companies need serious business reformatting to adapt to the changing realities of the marketplace.

"Malign Hypercognition Disorder," you respond immediately.

"What?"

"Evil Genius Disease. Nobody knows exactly why it happens, but as you leap up to the top bell curve of intelligence individuals are more and more likely to be evil. Some people think it's because the smarter you get the more detached from the human race you are, but there's plenty of examples of that not being true, so there's gotta be something more to it."

"You seem to know a bit about it," she notes dryly.

"Heh. Used to worry about getting it when I was a kid. I'm pretty far up there on the IQ chart myself."

"So you STOPPED worrying about it? Why?"

"Because I genuinely could do literally anything I wanted to do with my life, and I choose to get the most thankless and least-rewarding job in the world; being a superhero."

"The world always needs more saving, Lyna. And you can either keep working at it or ignore it. What makes you special? You choose to work at it, even when everyone told you you shouldn't" you compliment.

You fall asleep at your computer again, a list of interesting occurrences in the area and ways you can help out drawn up in front of you for when you wake up tomorrow....

>This choice will determine the theme and style of Freedom Eagle's next caper.

>What Do You Do?

>There's a series of dangerous assaults that began to show up in the city a few weeks ago, one ending in death. The ECPD are investigating, but you could always offer to lend a hand.

>The number of campers and vacationers vanishing in Arcadia Forest and the mountains surrounding the city is way above the national average, as is the number of weird sightings of un-identified creatures. Someone should look into that.

>You should really focus on Freedom Enterprises for a couple of days while going on regular patrols. The company doesn't exactly need your help, but the market here is really competitive for tech companies.

>You should start assembling profiles of the local criminal groups, building cases and gathering info on them. It'll likely be a LONG time before any of it is actionable, but it has to start somewhere.

The next week and a half passes without too much incident; you work at the company, helping it establish a presence here in Emerald City as you patrol nightly and sometimes-daily as Freedom Eagle to establish that he's there to stay.

You help foil maybe four or five major crimes, solve two unsolved cases, and for good measure start messing with some of the local syndicates just to let them know that they aren't not on your radar just because they don't have fancy powers and flashy costumes.

You even take down a hitman sent to kill you, which you means you're definitely doing your job right in that regard.

Eventually you cast your eye outside the city itself.

"Hey, want to go camping?" you say to Lyna one weekend after patrol.

"I'm sorry, 'camping'?" she asks, confused.

>WDYS?

>"You don't know what camping is?"

>"It's like what we do now, but with more nature!"

"How is it you can do all the things you do and know all the things you know and speak five separate languages," you begin, and she intereupts you.

"Six. Or well, almost six. I am learning Korean, seeing as there's a large population of-"

"Not the point! Point is, how is it you can do all that and not know what camping is?"

"Well....what's camping?" she asks, raising her eyebrow at this as-of unheard of important aspect of outsider culture, and you explain it to her in detail.

"So...," she begins, narrowing her eyes in thought, "it is an attempt to find rest and relaxation in the relatively safe and tamed areas of wilderness out of nostalgia for the lack of untamed areas of wilderness that urban dwellers have, while continuing to allow a society to reduce the untamed wilderness they have nostalgia for in the first place?"

You pause for a second at that analogy.

"Just take all the fun out of it why don't you?" you quip lightly.

"Should we be HAVING 'fun'? There is still much work to do in Emerald City, especially among the criminal element. Perhaps one of us should stay behind if this camping is something that needs to be done, to maintain pressure upon them? While I do not have the investigative prowess you have, I can and am willing to work closely with AEGIS and the police to keep my effectiveness high."

>WDYS?

>She DOES make a logical argument.

>She could use the time off. Besides, you might need backup if stuff gets weird.

We could call in someone from the League to step in for us, if we think it's necessary.

We're superheroes, there's no way a normal camping trip won't end up with running into weird supernatural creatures. It's like how murder mysteries crop up whenever fictional detectives go on vacation.

>She could use the time off. Besides, you might need backup if stuff gets weird.
Vacations get interrupted, cardinal law of superheroing.

"Nope, city will be here after one weekend! Come in, we're going to learn you some outdoor fun!" you order.

"Your grammar is atrocious, Jack."

That's focusing on one very specific outcome/goal, and I even suggested you do it for many other reasons -- Fun, the pursuit of passions and interests, improving your talent -- Publishing, being picked up by BIG2U, doing it to make ends meet; those things are understandably hard goals, but contrary to popular belief, even those are not impossible if you are determined.

That's the point of what I am trying to convey here -- Confining your interests, willingly imposing limitations on you yourself; you're closing the door to all the possibilities without giving credence to your passion.

There are things worth believing in, things worth living for, and neither of those are mutually exclusive to paying bills.

You say you would love to work on this but then give the excuse you're too busy to do it. I don't know your current situation, but I can say this... If you have time to run a reoccurring quest, you have the time to do things for yourself. This IS something you're doing for yourself, but it's merely validation of your creativity without challenging it.

You've given up the ghost for the thinnest excuse of "lack of contacts." Well funny thing about that, they start with you committing to a task, completing it and placing that body of work out for the world to see. You don't have contacts because you don't have a representation of your strength and abilities.

I do understand why you would feel like you've already lost the battle, because as of now your efforts are invested in something that isn't your property.

If you're here for fun, then carry on; but some day the day will come when you look back on a streak of empty satisfaction, and you'll reach for easy justification, as you always have, but this time it will not cut it. Suddenly the veil will be lifted, the path that was once blocked all those years is clear to walk, and you'll feel a fool for never venturing to take a single step.

But you're young, so that fate can be altered

You severely underestimate the amount of sheer and utter bullshit involved in comic book industry.

As someone who knows someone who works at Dark Horse as a backup penciler, I can attest to this being a problem with the industry right now.

I like you, OP, that's why I'm here, but you are one dense motherfucker.

Say "industry" one more time. Go ahead - ignore the truth that you're content being a Betta in a dixie cup.

Best part is, it genuinely wasn't even me who posted.

The issues with comics right now is a known thing among a lot of people who read them.

Besides, I don't have all my baskets in the comics egg anyway.
