Codex: (Coming soon!)

You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

You freeze for a moment, trying to comprehend just what the hell you are seeing. You at first believe what you were seeing was a trick of the light (or lack of it). However, you see the rotted hand flex, and the face that shows itself as it climbs over the side of your Vertical Tank confirms what you feared. You were truly facing a dead man.

Well, not truly dead. You could see the body was grafted to some kind of hydraulic frame, with a small diesel engine mounted on the back powering the whole thing. The dead soldier silently glares at you for a second before raising its other arm, where you see a small submachine gun grated directly into the limb.

"Roy? What's going on?!" Tarin yells from inside. She of course couldn't see what you were.

Your eyes wander to your pintle mounted .50 gun, thankfully still intact after the previous tank battle.

"IT'S JUST AN UNINVITED GUEST!" You yell as you grab the .50 cal and swing it around on its ring mount, slamming the gun into the side of the dead soldier's head, clanging loudly against its helmet. The dead soldier loses its grip, slipping off the side of your vertical tank and falling to the ground below.

"TRY STAYING DEAD!" You bellow in a combination of fear and adrenaline as you pull the trigger and hold it down, tearing the dead soldier to pieces and making sure it was very dead again.

You also happen to grab the attention at least a dozen more, flickering in and out of view from your .50 cal's muzzle flashes. Oh god, there were more.

THERE WERE MORE.

You briefly consider telling Tarin to go full throttle, but you might blow your VT's damaged knee if you did so. However, staying in the midst of these unholy robot corpse hybrids was not a very tempting alternative.

"Tarin, we need to GO!" You yell. "As fast as you can go without wrecking the leg!"

"I'm already going at that speed." Tarin responds. "Do we have enemy infantry?"

"You can say that." You grumble as you continue your .50 cal's relentless fire. Fortunately, the walking corpses weren't exactly resistant to .50 cal bullets, and mechanical parts weren't too well armored, either. You see limbs and parts being blown off in the darkness. At least one engine pack is penetrated, bursting in flames and immolating the corpse wearing it and further illuminating the field.

"Something's wrong!" Tarin grunts as she wrestles with her control sticks. "It feels like the legs are getting weighed down! Did we hit a mud patch or something?"

You risk a look over the edge of your VT, and grimace when you see the dead soldiers clamping on to your VT's legs in an attempt to slow it down, and unfortunately, it was working, judging from how sluggish your VT's movement was getting.

You look around for something, ANYTHING you could use. Your eyes then fall upon one of the spare fuel cans strapped to the side of your VT, its flammable contents sloshing inside as if trying to escape. You quickly unstrap it and untwist the cap. You grab a road flare from your emergency kit, ignite it, drop it into the fuel can, and toss it over the front of the VT.

There's a brilliantly bright explosion as the can explodes like a small bomb, spraying flaming gasoline everywhere. The undead soldiers make so sound, but you can tell that the fire is effecting them. Not only is flesh roasted and charred, but hydraulics jam and lock up from the intense heat, and engine packs fail and in some cases explode and combust themselves, disabling the undead soldiers' movements. Like dead skin being molted off, the burning corpses slowly peel off your VT's legs with every movement. The pace picks up again, and you see no further sign of the undead troops.

You're so relieved that you almost don't even notice the stench of charred meat and burning hydraulic fluid.

"What the hell was even going on out there?" Tarin asks.

"We were being attacked by undead corpses grafted to mechanical frames." You try to explain in the most straightforward way you can.

"Oh." Tarin says, completely nonplussed. "That's new."

You just shake your head at Tarin's apparent non-reaction and look ahead. You can now see the signs of a major battle going on. Fires blazed in the distance, and the unmistakable sight of tracers zipped to and fro.

(cont)
>>
>>40589347

"Looks like we caught up." You say, trying to get a better look of the battle through your binoculars. You could see buildings highlight against the flames. "That's Savoy all right."

"I can't seem to reach the others." Tarin says. "Too much traffic on the local net. The line is getting hit real hard."

"Hey, wait a minute." You squint as you see a number of headlights right ahead. You swing your searchlight over the convoy to see a number of trucks, with troops piling in as fast as possible.

"Is that a retreat?" Tarin frowns.

"No..." You squint. You could see more Tilean soldiers fleeing on foot, sans weapons. "This is a full blown rout!"

"We'd better keep moving then." Tarin grunts. "The others must still be in the town."

>>
>>40589485

Stopping the rout is the job of the higher ups. For all we know, a full retreat has been ordered and we're out of the loop.

We need information currently, rather than trying to be super protagonist right now, especially since we haven't done anything famous (yet) that would carry weight with any of the fleeing troops.
>>
>>40589524
the retards think that a single VT can hold up the entire Reikland advance when hundreds of infantry are fleeing
>>
>>40589524
You aren't going to stop a rout. Period. The best we can do is hold up the enemy advance for as long as we can.

And tanks, when defending, have a decent chance at holding off inf. VTs would have it even easier.

Plus, some inf might not be retreating. Further, we need to find our unit.
>>
>>40589565
>VTs would have it even easier.
Right, especially those VTs with NO anti-infantry capabilities... We would kind of need a HE shell or a co-ax to even consider doing that, and we lack both of those.
>>
>>40589485
We lack the authority, notoriety, and skill to rally the forces. Follow the crowd, rank and file, we have important Intel we can pass along anyways. For now no need to be An Hero.
>>
>>40589524

Short of shooting them, it's not exactly like we have the means to rally the infantry in the first place.

Trying to get information might be a good idea, however.

>>40589551

I don't think anyone is saying we'll stop the advance by ourselves. Realistically, we are unlikely to stop the advance even if we rally a small portion of the infantry (which will very likely not occur anyways). We're not command level, nor are we anyone famous that the infantry would follow or give a damn about when confronted with undead troops.
>>
>>40589597
>Follow the crowd
The crowd are running away anon, we need to link up with our platoon and the rest of our division
>>
>>40589588

>>
>>40589588

>>
>>40589639
>AT shell

>>
>>40589565
Our unit is either dead, fucked badly with lack of support or not in the city. WE have next to no anti-infantry ability since we took the tank destroyer.

>>40589597

>>40589610

>>40589631

>>
>>40589675
>Nope tank destroyers can't use HE.
READ THE FUCKING POST.
We've been through this discussion at least once a thread. We can fire an HE shell, just not as effective.
>>
>>40589664
Nope, we don't have those, apparently our superior cannon is physically incapable of firing explosives and can only use solid shot.
>>
>>40589675
>We could attempt it at least.

Waste of time on our part, considering we are in the middle of an unexpected assault by troops we weren't prepared for at all. My take on it - we don't have much time, especially to be trying to play officer.

We need desperately to link back up with our unit, and/or get intel on wtf is going on. We need orders, or at least enough information to act until we link up with command-level officers.

Trying to be officers when we aren't is probably the worst thing we can do right now. Besides, I really don't want to be hated by infantry and get an undesired reputation if we attempt to bully them with our machine gun.

"Yeah, you're right." You nod. "Bannon doesn't seem like the type of guy who would run from a fight."

"...for better or worse." Tarin says ominously.

"Always have to be the party pooper." You roll your eyes before you spot a group of soldiers running past and you shout at them. "Hey! HEY! What's happening?!"

"You better get the hell out of here!" One of the soldiers. "The dead! They got the fucking dead walking on their side!"

Of course. No matter how scary the undead Reikland soldiers you encountered seemed terrifying to you, they had be magnitudes scarier to the regular infantry on the ground. Even if they were not particularly fast nor smart, you could see their value as a shock weapon.

"You guys see any friendly VTs in there?" You yell.

"Yeah! At the main crossroad, crazy bastards!" The man nods before running off into the night.

"Tarin!" You kick her lightly in the shoulder to grab her attention. "Get us to the town center! We'll link up with them there!"

"Roger." Tarin nods.

Just getting to the town presented a set of new challenges, mostly trying to avoid stomping on retreating friendly troops. Most of them were smart enough to stay out of the path of the giant, legged war machine stomping their way, but some were so far gone with panic that there was once case one poor sap literally ran face first your VT's leg, knocking himself out cold. Fortunately, the mass of retreating troops begins to thin once you reach the town proper, where you see the rest of the platoon set up in the center of the town, where the main road linking it to Reikland and the interior of Tilea proper was located. You could see Axel and Alfie's Heavy Woverine parked directly in the middle of the road as a literal roadblock, while Rock and Bannon's VTs were taking firing positions on the flanks. At their feet, you could see what was left of the infantry, the remnants that didn't flee, manning defensive positions.

"Sir, we're here!" You announce.

"About damn time!" Bannon grunts. "What the hell took you so long!?"

"Got held up by some dead folk, sir." You explain.

"Yeah, well we've been fighting them off all night." Bannon groans. "I just got off the line with Sawyer. He wants us to hold this town at all costs."

"What do you need me to do, sir?" You ask.

"Just a second. Parker's coordinating with the guys on the ground." Bannon grunts. "Just stay put for now. Seems like the Reiks pulled back to regroup. Take a piss break or whatever."

"You don't like this mission either, don't you sir?" Rock interjects playfully.

"Of course not." Bannon grunts. "Can't very well disobey a direct order, can I? I'm still more afraid of Sawyer than those dead fucks out there!"

"Please, sir, I'm trying to work out a defense plan here." Parker sighs with exasperation. "Can you two please quiet down?"

With a moment to breath, you turn to Tarin, eying her quickly and crudely bandaged shoulder.

"Does it hurt?" You ask, pointing to her wound.

"Oh, not really. It just stings a bit" Tarin shakes her head, no doubt to try and reassure you. Too bad she was utterly terrible at lying, at least to you.

"Well, we might as well get that wound properly dressed anyways." You say as you dig out the first aid kit. Your initial treatment was a quick patch job in the heat of the moment. You slowly peel the bandage off of Tarin's shoulder, and notice her wince when you do so.

"You want me to be more careful?" You ask. You know Tarin would never voice the complaint herself.

Tarin just silently nods.

"Sorry."

Fortunately, it seemed as if her wound had largely scabbed over now, stopping most of the bleeding. You dab at it with some alcohol to disinfect the wound, causing Tarin to bite her lip for a bit, and you quickly but carefully apply a fresh bandage.

"There, that should hold together better now." You say, proud of your own work.

"Thanks." Tarin moves her shoulder around a bit to test it and the bandage. "I think I can work with this."

"Hey Roy, glad to see you guys are still alive!" Axel says, relief in his voice. "Alfie was worried sick about you two!"

"B-but you were the one who k-kept asking if they were b-back yet!" Alfie whimpers.

"W-well I was just curious!" Axel says a bit too loudly. "Anyways glad to see you here. Could always use an extra gun!"

"And you're fine with just being used as a shell magnet like that?" You ask.

"Yeah, well, that's kind of the lot you draw when you roll in a Heavy." Axel chuckles. "Don't worry, they've been bouncing shells off us all night and we haven't taken a single scratch yet!"

"Okay Powers, here's what we'll do." Parker interrupts. "I've just coordinated with the remaining infantry. It seems the Reiks will be sending in another attack wave, and it looks like it'll be the big one. Since you're our main AT power, we have a few possible vantage points. You can take position in two proper, the hills behind the town, or in the trees just south of us."

You mull your options. Staying in the town afforded the best cover and protection, but that would limit your field of view to just down the road. While it would be like shooting fish in a barrel, you wouldn't be able to engage anything that might try to flank the town. Setting up on the hills would give you the best view of the surrounding area, and be able to engage almost anything approaching the town at long range. But judging from the number of craters around the hill, you suspect the Reiklanders might already have artillery zeroed in on the hills. Finally, you could take position in the trees. It would give you a very advantageous position to hit anything going down the main road on the flank, but of course you were even more vulnerable to being flanked in the forest, even with infantry cover.

"All right, we're moving." You nod to Tarin, who powers up the engine. Your VT rumbles back to life as it slowly stomps its way to the southern forest. Down below, you could see about a dozen infantry moving ahead of you.

"Mind if I know who's watching our backs this fine night?" You ask.

"Heh, Sergeant Paccone, at your service!" You hear a cheerful voice respond. "Didn't catch your name..."

"Sergeant Powers." You reply.

The objective of these full line strategic attacks is to isolate hardpoints in the enemy line and exploit the weaknesses. If we get cut off we either get bypassed or surrounded and starved out. The counter move is either orderly withdrawal to stretch the enemy supply line and counterattack, or having enough artillery on the line to make a broad advance impossible in the first place. 'Hold this town at all costs' is not recommended.

"Clearing the forest out would be nice." You say.

"Got it. I'll send a fireteam to scout out the area." Paccone nods. You see him turn to his squad and make a few hand motions. Six of his men then promptly shuffle off into the woods.

"Say, Paccone, mind if I ask a question?" You ask.

"Sure, go right ahead." Paccone responds.

"So why are you sticking around? Why not run away with the others?"

"Well, that's simple!" Paccone laughs. "They don't live here. I do."

"Oh..." You glance back at the town, some parts of which were still burning. "I'm sorry."

"Hey, comes with the territory. At least the land is cheap!" Paccone chortles. "Anyways, heads up. We've got movement!"

"He's right. Vehicles on the road." Tarin adds.

You return your attention to the road, where indeed, you see a large convoy blazing down towards the town. You can see multiple Lynxes and trucks, no doubt carrying troops. Whether it was the live or not-so-live kind, you weren't sure, but either case wouldn't be good. From this angle, you'll have a very good side shot against them. Combined with your gun, it would be a guaranteed penetration, you think.

Torn between the options, but since we're the main AT according to Parker, we have to go after the Lynxes and trust that the rest will deal with the trucks. Take the guaranteed penetration on the harder targets.

"Tarin, steady our position." You say.

"Got it." Tarin nods as she pushes on the foot pedals, widening your VT's stance so it can better stabilize its shots and absorb recoil. You look through your gunsights, carefully gazing at the six Lynxes accompanying the infantry push. They were easy to spot from their red optics glinting in the darkness. You carefully line up your shots, though you wonder which Lynx to prioritize first.

You pull the trigger and the entire VT rumbles as the 76mm cannon erupts. Due to the distance, it takes a little over a second for the high velocity shell to get downrange and straight into the side of the Lynx. The enemy VT bursts into flame and explodes, leaving only two legs standing.

Immediately, the Lynxes spin to face your direction. They don't have a clear shot at you. Hell, they don't even know exactly where you are. However, they have a rough idea of your direction and start firing anyways. Shells land among the trees, causing Paccone and his men to drop to the ground as a reflex.

Meanwhile, you can see infantry disgorging from the trucks in an attempt to separate themselves from the easier targets that the trucks were. Explosions ripple across the convoy as Bannon, Axel, and Alex start raining shots from their own positions.

"Ricks in the open! Ricks in the open! Take them out!" Bannon yells. "Rock, call some damn arty down on the bastards!"

"Coming down!" Rock says.

Now being attacked from two sides, the Lynxes hesitate, as if trying to decide which way to go. This was a chance to knock or even two more out, but if you shoot, they'd definitely get a lock on your position then.

"Not just yet." You say. "If we do while they're looking at us, they'll toast us. We're not exactly in tip top shape, either."

"Understood." Tarin nods.

More shells land among the convoy. One truck takes a direct hit and goes up in flames, sending infantry flying in all directions. Another Lynx takes a shot in the side and catches fire. Three of the remaining Lynxes turn away to return fire at the rest of the platoon, while one more keeps an eye on the forest.

You next shot hits on target, drilling straight through the front glacis of the fourth Lynx. The penetration is so quick and clean that VT doesn't even explode.it just droops down and ceases movement.

"Nice shooting." Tarin compliments.

"Thanks." You grin.

"Hey, guys, I got some bad news!" Paccone grunts over the radio. "My other team ran across Ricks in the forest. Live ones."

"AT?" Tarin asks.

"Yeah, those short ranged, panzerfucks or whatever they call those things." Paccone reports. "We'll do our best to keep them off you, but there's got to be at least a platoon of them crawling around here!"

You glance back at the road, where the remaining Lynxes were getting into a shootout with your platoon. Meanwhile, the infantry, both a mix of the dead and living, are slowly advancing on the town, using the Lynxes and their not-quite-dead comrades as cover. They could use some more support.

"Whoa, stop! STOP!" Paccone yelps.

Tarin is quick enough to hit the brakes, halting the the VT in its tracks. No sooner does she do this when a rocket screams pass, blowing a tree in half.

"Shit, they're here!" Paccone grunts. They got us surrounded!"

Indeed, you could see the barest hints of movement in the trees, darting from tree to tree to keep concealed.

"Not quite surrounded." Tarin nods her head to the open field behind you. "That's a straight shot back to town."

"With absolutely zero cover." You point out. The Lynxes were still out there and could easily draw a bead on you if you break cover.

"And this situation is any better?" She asks.

"Paccone, get ready! We're going to charge our way through!" You yell. "Get ready to move and DO NOT STOP."

"Got it!" Paccone affirms. "On your signal, then!"

"Tarin, you ready? We're going to need some serious evasive maneuvering here."

"I can handle it." Tarin nods.

"All right, GO GO GO!" You yell as you spin the turret around, firing both the cannon and the coaxial .50 in an effort to scatter the Reik infantry. Paccone and his men add to the firestorm by throwing grenades in all directions before sprinting back towards town. Tarin opens up the throttle as far as it can go and your VT lurches forward at full gallop.

At that moment, the entire forest seems to light up bright as day as countless rockets and tracers illuminate the air around you. Just ahead of you, Paccone's squad sprints their way to safety, firing their rifles wildly into the trees in a vain effort to keep the Reik troops suppressed. Tarin manages to keep the VT expertly placed to provide maximum protection to Paccone's squad while at the same time avoiding getting hit by rockets.

Honestly, you had the easier job just firing wildly into the dark trees. You didn't even really have to aim. You just had to shoot in their general direction.

"Come on, we're almost there!" Paccone grunts.

"Rockets right!" You yell when you see the flashes of rocket launches in the trees.

"I got it." Tarin nods as she hits a lever, twisting the VT around to dodge the rockets, the projectiles screeching by only a few feet.

Suddenly, you hear a loud roar. Something like an oncoming freight train, or multiple trains. The hull of your VT vibrates violently as explosions ripple all along the field and forest.

"About fucking time that artillery came in!" Paccone crows.

"Hahaha, take that, Reikland freaks!" Bannon whoops. "That'll teach you to fuck with Tilea!"

The gunfire and rockets immediately stop as the enemy infantry are either killed, suppressed, or forced to flee the rain of artillery shells. The rest of the way back to the town is unobstructed and you link back up with the platoon.

"That was some good shooting out there!" Rock says happily. "That really helped us out there!"

"Yeah, we weren't sure we would be able to hold out against those numbers." Axel says in agreement.

"I-It was scaryyyy!" Alfie whimpers.

"Yeah, well, you guys did well for newbies." Bannon grunts. "What do you think, Parker?"

"I think they'll make fine additions to the platoon!" Parker says cheerfully.

"Huh. Looks like help finally arrived." Tarin says.

"About damn time." Rock sighs.

You turn out of the hatch and see a large column of Wolverines, no doubt the rest of the 4th Division, approaching the town. No doubt to reinforce the line. It was quite a sight, especially when they were illuminated by the rising sun.

Wait, the sun was rising?!

"Hey, uh, since we're safe for the moment, I'm just gonna take a quick nap..." You yawn as you slide back into your VT."

"Hey wait-" Bannon starts to protest but is cut off.

"Go ahead. You earned it." Parker says.

You settle back into your seat, trying to get comfortable. Even if it was for a few minutes, any kind of sleep was welcome.

"Hey Tarin-" You say before stopping yourself. It seemed like, as always, Tarin had beaten you to the punch, her eyes closed and snoring lightly.

Heh, guess it could wait.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. Don't forget PJ Witches on Sunday and Ace Combat on Friday!

So when those routed fucks get picked up, will they be put into penal battalions to reinforce the front after having 10% executed, or will we get to see them all hang?
